Charles Mallory’s grandfather, Clifford Day Mallory Sr., presided as the commodore of Indian Harbor Yacht Club in the 1930s. From 1930 onwards, IHYC wholeheartedly supported high school and middle school sailing, thanks in part to Commodore Clifford Day Mallory’s visionary efforts. Today, the prestigious interscholastic national championship appropriately carries his name, ‘The Mallory Trophy.’ Additionally, during this period, Clifford Day Mallory served as the President of the Yacht Racing Association of Long Island Sound. He was a key figure in shaping the sport of sailing and played an instrumental role in the establishment of sailing organizations such as NAYRU (North American Yacht Racing Union), now known as US Sailing , the US Power Squadron , the Yacht Racing Union of Long Island Sound , and The American Power Boating Association .

Summer Regattas

St Barths Sailing Regatta

And of all sailboat races, classic regattas – featuring vintage, wooden and Spirit of Tradition sailboats – are some of the most exciting to watch.

Not only are the classically styled yachts some of the most beautiful boats in the world, the racing is inspiring, conjuring up the spirit of yachting lore. In other words, attendees get treated to the best in summertime entertainment. The races are a thrill to watch, and the dockside social soirees, awards ceremonies and parties enable attendees to chat with New England’s finest yachtsmen. For yachters, there isn’t a better way to spend a summer weekend in New England.

Which sailing regattas should you attend? Worldwide Boat has the insider’s scoop on some of New England’s most prestigious summer sailboat races. Try to make it to a few – and of course, a sailboat charter for race day offers the best seat to take in all the thrilling action.

Classic Regattas to Catch every Summer

1. Vineyard Cup – Martha’s Vineyard, MA – (July)

Held in Martha’s Vineyard, this regatta features more than 100 participating yachts, and a full slate of races over three days. The event – which was launched in 2006 – is sponsored by Sail MV, and it’s quickly become one of New England’s premier regattas. Not only is the racing spectacular, attendees can enjoy a wide range of onshore events. Although this isn’t strictly a classic regatta – there many different classes of boats and races courses – the Vineyard Cup is a must-see for classic yacht enthusiasts.

2. Castine to Camden Yacht Race – Castine, ME – (August)

The Castine Classic Yacht Race – part of three days of regattas in the 2018 Wooden Boat Series – takes place in Maine’s stunning Penobscot Bay, an inlet in the Gulf of Maine. Specked with islands more than 200 miles and spectacular harbors, the bay offers the best in Maine yachting. The Castine to Camden race puts yachters on a 20-mile course across the Bay, from Castine to Camden. Castine Yacht Club, the race’s sponsor, opens the regatta to classic and Spirit of Tradition monohulls over 28’.

3. Camden Classic Yacht Regatta – Camden, ME – (August)

For more than 30 years, classic yachts have gathered at the Camden Yacht Club for the annual Camden Classic Regatta. Featuring a challenging 15+ mile course, the yacht runs from Camden to Brooklin, ME. This, along with the Castine and Eggemoggin races, make up a wonderful three days of classic yacht racing on Penobscot Bay.

4. Corinthian Classic Yacht Regatta – Marblehead, MA – (August)

Corinthian is a name synonymous with New England sailing. For more than 125 years, the Corinthian Yacht Club has called Marblehead, MA home, and in that time, they’ve produced numerous racing champions including several America’s Cup defenders. The Corinthian Classic Yacht Regatta was started nearly 40 years ago, and it’s become of the largest celebrates of “classic yachts and characters.” Just as speculator as the racing, though, is the onshore atmosphere, another compelling reason to go.

5. Nantucket Race Week – Nantucket, MA – (August)

Nantucket Race Week runs for nine days in mid-August, and features races in numerous classes. Yet, one of the week’s most exciting races is the Nantucket Regatta (held on August 18). The race was first run in 1930, but recently underwent restructuring in 2016. Open to 24+ foot classic wooden yachts, the regatta is part of the North American Panerai Classic Yachts Challenge Series. And it’s certainly one race you will want to catch during the week.

6. Opera House Cup – Nantucket, MA – (August)

The Opera House Cup is the oldest classic sailboat race on the East Coast, having started more than 40 years ago in 1973. A joy to watch, the Opera House Cup draws a fleet up roughly 100 vintage yachts – offering a unique look at many different styles of classic boats.

7. Herreshoff Classic Yacht Regatta – Bristol, RI – (August)

The Herreschoff Regatta – held each year in Bristol, RI – was named after the Herreschoff Manufacturing Company, a storied yacht builder that produced several America’s Cup defenders. In fact, many classic yachts feature Herreschoff designs. The classic regatta – part of the Panerai Series – takes place in the picturesque Narragansett Bay on Friday, with its sister race the Newport Classic taking place on Saturday. Throughout the weekend, attendees are welcomed to cocktail hours, expos and plenty to see and do.

8. Newport Classic Yacht Regatta – Newport, RI – (August)

Newport is a classic New England yachting town – one of the largest yacht charter ports in New England. And with its long history in sailing, it makes sense Newport is one to one of the East Coast’s most exciting classic regattas. Since 1980, the Newport Classic race has taken place in the southern reaches of Narragansett Bay. Part of the Narragansett Bay Classic Yacht Rendezvous – along with the Herrschoff – the race starts from Bristol to Newport, followed by racing near Newport.

9. Indian Harbor Yacht Club Classic Yacht Regatta – Greenwich, CT – (September)

A recent addition to the classic regatta summer series, the Indian Harbor Classic Regatta takes place on Long Island Sound. The regatta’s sponsor – Greenwich, CT’s Indian Harbor Yacht Club – opens the race to classic and Spirit of Tradition yachts, and hosts awards dinners, cocktail hours and parties throughout the weekend.

This year, a record 39 boats participated ranging in size from 18-foot Marshall catboats to the 90-foot Spirit of Tradition designed yawl Bequia . They also ranged in age, with most of the fleet being built in the 1920s through 1950s.

Classic yachts have a different look and feel from today’s sleek, modern boats. While every boat has its merits, the owners and sailors of classics have a romantic appreciation for design, preservation and history. Watching them plying through the waters off Captain Harbor under full canvas, one could distinguish them quickly by their bright, highly varnished woodwork. Wood, varnish and bronze provide a richer texture than boats made of fiberglass, carbon fiber and wire rigging. And while modern boats are often designed to sail flat, the long overhangs of a classic heeling in a stiff breeze evokes images of sweeping elegance. That heeling ability also delivers a practical advantage of extending the waterline to create acceleration through the water. It is no wonder that heavier air typically suits classics.

Indeed, the forecast delivered as promised and the largest fleet of 48- to 90-footers left the line in a medium, but building breeze of 10+ knots. As Ticonderoga , Black Watch , Puffin and the two Q Class yachts, Hope and Nor’easter , came to the line, the 1926-built Nor’easter decided to approach the start with no rights on port tack and quickly tacked under Bequia onto starboard, thus allowing the entire first fleet to clear the line heading toward the green bell “A” and out into the waters of Long Island Sound. Bequia and Black Watch quickly took the lead, with the legendary ketch Ticonderoga picking up steam as the breeze continued to build. Once this fleet reached the north shore of Long Island, however, the racers were halted by a lack of breeze, as recounted by John Neceszny, the mainsheet trimmer on Nor’easter :

“We got rolled early after exiting Captain Harbor as the bigger boats legged out and put some distance on us in the modest breeze after the start. As we found our groove and made our way across the Sound towards Long Island, we wondered why we were closing on Black Watch and Bequia as if they’d quit racing. It was then we realized that the wind had shut down. Next, Hope , who we thought we’d left way behind, all of a sudden charged past us, still in breeze. We decided to tack back away and chase the filling breeze in hopes of keeping up our speed, and we found ourselves sailing in and out of patches of wind coming from different directions literally yards away from each other. It was unnerving, but we took our medicine while skipper Ted Graves just powered through the patches. We rounded with speed and it was game on downwind as the breeze continued to build and we raced back towards the Connecticut shore.”

Ticonderoga

A special moment in racing occurred when both fleets converged on the last turning mark at the same time to create an exciting scene of sails, shapes and sizes all charging through the much-anticipated afternoon southerly, while the nine 30-foot one-design Shields fleet held a series of short triangle races using spinnakers inside Captain Harbor.

With all racers in, the boats filled the clubhouse docks and the awards party went into full swing with Dark ‘n Stormies from Gosling’s. Prizes were given out in each class in additional to trophies for overall winners Dagger , Golden-Eye and Puffin . Additional awards were announced, including a Spirit of Panerai Award presented to Ticonderoga for her excellence of preservation and joyful participation that included allowing the junior sailors onboard to skipper during the race and to swing from her lovely halyards after racing. The regatta’s closing event followed this theme of sharing, with Indian Harbor Yacht Club once again hosting Yale-New Haven Hospital cancer patients and their caregivers out for an afternoon on the water in collaboration with the Sailing Heals organization.

Boothbay Harbor Yacht Club celebrates 50 years of races

indian harbor classic yacht regatta

For half a century, sailors and boat enthusiasts have delighted in one of the Boothbay region’s most anticipated events. This year marks the 50th Boothbay Harbor Yacht Club Regatta, which takes place July 20 and 21 around the harbor and outside of Squirrel Island. It is the oldest regatta in Maine, according to regatta co-chair Bob Scribner.

“Running a regatta for this length of time has required a strong commitment from club members and leaders over the years,” Scribner said. He said the regatta was transformed in 2021 to focus on mostly wooden classic yachts “evocative of a bygone era of sailing,” and the effort has resulted in tremendous growth.

In 2023, over 60 classic and modern boats competed. Scribner said he expects around 70 yachts for 2024, including the Boothbay Harbor One Design boats involved since the beginning.

The event also includes the fourth season of the Shipyard Cup Classics Challenge, featuring a slew of classic yachts. The challenge is a nod to the Shipyard Cup superyacht races that were a staple in Boothbay Harbor for over a decade. Between the two competitions, there are 11 racing divisions, including a casual cruising option for first-time racers or those who want to take a scenic cruise around the course.
