The Raven is a 57' Lagoon Catamaran valued at $598,000 in a 2019 marine survey. The Raven comes with a 300+ page customized owner and operating manual and is in very good condition.  The owner has decided it’s time to downsize to something smaller that does not require so much maintenance and is asking $295,000, which is a great value!  The Raven contains the following: A Salon - The salon or common area has bench seating for eight (8), and ample storage under the bench seats.  This area also has large windows giving you a panoramic view of the water from all sides of the room.    Chart Room - The chart room contains all the necessary navigation equipment and charting tools needed to operate the Raven. They include: Raymarine ST6002 Smart Pilot Controller, Raymarine S100 Controller, Raymarine Radome Scanner Radar, Raymarine C70 GPS, Simrad Chart Plotter Fish Finder, Marine VHF 600 Radio, and Thermal Imager. Five (5) Berths - There are three (3) main berths onboard, each one contains a queen bed, closet, fire extinguisher, two dresser drawers, a full-length mirror, and private head.  The berths are located Starboard Aft, Starboard Mid and Port Aft. There is also a bunk room, mid-ship Portside that has been converted into a tool room / bunk room, but still contains bunk beds, closets, mirrors, and a private head.  In addition, there is a crew berth and head accessed through an outside hatch, which is located forward on the Portside.    Five (5) Heads - There are four (4) main heads onboard along with one (1) additional head in the crew’s quarters.  Each head contains a sink, toilet, and shower.  The crew’s quarters head has a hatch that connects it to the tool room / bunk room head and can be used as an emergency exit. Galley - The galley contains all equipment necessary to store and prepare food and contains a refrigerator, freezer, stove, oven, microwave oven, blender, double sink and ample storage. Electrical Room - The electrical room, located Portside, consists of an electrical panel, electrical closet, Maytag washer and Freedom SW 3012 battery inverter. Tool Room / Bunk Room - The tool room / bunk room, located forward Portside contains six (6) 210AH 4D Concorde Lifeline GPL 4DA Deep Cycle RV batteries located under the bottom bunk. Deck - The deck is arranged with a deckhouse, recessed cockpit, and transom steps. The deck’s perimeter is perforated aluminum toerails, vertical stainless-steel stanchions with coated cable lifelines. The ventilation and locker access hatches are arranged across the deck per function. Aft Deck - The aft deck has a covered eating area with several outdoor sitting areas.  In addition, the aft deck contains: Lazarettes (Port, Mid and Starboard storage), Settees (Port and Starboard storage), Helm and Steering Wheel (Port and Starboard), Outside Sink, Fuel Gauges, Engine Controls, Depth Finder and solar panels. Engines - There are two (2) new 2023 YanMar Diesel 55hp engines, located off the back transom, top swim step stair, on both the Port and Starboard sides. Each engine also has a new 2023 starter battery, harness and control panel. Generator - There is a 14K Isuzu generator with a wireless remote control located in the Port forward locker.  The Raven has had over $225,000 worth of work done in the past two years, including new YanMar engines (x2), new sail drives (x2), new engine harnesses (x2), new engine batteries (x2), new engine controls (x2), all deck hatches and seals have been replaced, new bottom and side thru-holes, new bottom paint, rudder adjustments (x2), new sheave on upper halyard, new transom bumpers and rails, some electric wiring and more. In 2019 the Raven had $480,000 worth of work done, including a new forward auxiliary generator, hull paint, standing rigging, new domestic water tanks (x2), new vinyl ceiling panels, deckhouse windows were replaced, and a new house battery bank was installed.  The Raven also had a Marine Survey, which is available upon request.

Up to 20: cruiser / Over 20: sports cruiser / Over 30: racer

Sometimes it’s hard to see from the outside what performance you might expect from one sailing boat vs another and so, like in cars, one measure often used is the Power to Weight ratio, in boats this is called the Sail Area to Displacement ratio or SAD. This is a universal measure that allows us to compare widely different models and come to a reasonably accurate view on their likely relative performance under similar sailing conditions.

Multihull World use a variation of the SAD calculations used by the major sail racing organisations and the figures we publish broadly look like this:

• SAD under 15 : Motor sailer
• SAD 15 - 20: cruiser
• SAD 20 - 25: Performance cruiser
• SAD 25 – 30: Cruiser racer
• SAD above 30: race boat

The calculation takes the upwind sail area and divides it by the actual weight of the boat. The calculation is a little more complicated than that but that’s the essence. It takes no account of hull shape, skipper quality or any other differences.

Unfortunately, not every vendor knows the sail area of their sails and not everyone knows the weight of their boat – for this reason we sometimes don’t have the SAD available to publish. Also, some manufacturers publish a weight that is well below the real weight of their boats and in that way appear to have much more performance than they actually do.

However, leaving those anomalies aside, we think this measure is an interesting one for those who are comparing multihulls or are coming to multihulls for the first time.

As a general rule – one generally trades performance for accommodation. If your boat is under 50ft and has walkways either side of beds low in the hull then she isn’t going to sail very well!

I bought a yacht that I had never seen. I did this because I trusted my broker Andrew Holland. It was not an easy job for Andrew, as I am an experienced boat builder and owner of previous yachts, but work in West Africa. Imagine how hard it was to communicate what I was looking for. Andrew came up with exactly what I wanted. He dealt with time delays, all my questions at odd hours, and was there for the survey. He reported honestly and professionally. After buying the yacht, I arrived at the boat on a Sunday night, after dark, after travelling from West Africa to the Caribbean, and found it was better than expected. He never pulled punches and made me aware of shortfalls. I expected to spend my one month leave working on the boat, but actually spent less than one week, and was able to spend 3 weeks sailing – wonderful bonus.

Power Catamaran boats

Power catamarans are multihull power boats that are increasingly popular due to their stability, maneuverability and comfortable ride. They also have more deck and cabin space than traditional monohull power boats, due to the fact they have dual hulls. They make great fishing boats, and excellent pleasure and day boats due to ample deck space.

How are Power Catamarans built?

The two hulls of a power catamaran are designed to cut through waves with less drag, thus increasing fuel efficiency and ride comfort. Many modern power catamarans are built with stepped hulls and utilize vented hull technology. These vessels range in size from 19 feet to over 100 feet.

What type of engines power Power Catamarans?

Smaller power catamarans are mostly all powered by outboard motors mounted on the rear transom. Power options vary, but generally range from a single 100 HP motor up to triple or quad outboards and can achieve very high cruising and top speeds. Larger power catamarans are often powered by inboard engines and some are even powered by jet propulsion.

What optional equipment is available for Power Catamarans?

Optional equipment for power catamarans includes typical fishing gear such as fish finders, rod holders, riggers, navigation equipment, radar, premium marine sound systems, head, galley, luxury seating/upholstery, appliances and more. Power Catamaran boats are larger size vessels frequently used for time-honoured activities such as overnight cruising and day cruising. Across all YachtWorld listings, the average number if people power catamaran vessels can accommodate is 12 passengers, with an average maximum capacity of 299 guests and crew. More powerful models can handle motors up to an extraordinary 3,046 horsepower, while shorter, more affordable models may have as low as 77 horsepower engines (although the average engine size is 640 HP).

Of the 998 power catamaran boats currently for sale on YachtWorld, there are 480 new vessels and 518 used and custom yachts listed by professional brokerages mainly in the following countries: United States, British Virgin Islands, Spain, France and Canada. Over the past 30 days, 96 power catamaran boats have been listed for sale on YachtWorld. The average length of these vessels is 43 feet, while they differ in length from 22 feet for the shortest to 109 feet for the longest listed vessel. They are built by a wide variety of yacht building companies and their hull types include catamaran, deep vee, semi-displacement, planing and other designs.
