Yächtley Crëw rides like the wind to make you free again at local show

yachtley rock

It's almost like Gerry Rafferty, Rupert Holmes, Robbie Dupree, Billy Ocean and England Dan & John Ford Coley are all coming to town −to play at the exact same concert −their most smash-hit song, and nothing else.

Throw in some Player, a little Ace and a helping of 10cc, and we're talking about a sure-to-be smooth-sailing show by Yächtley Crëw.

Billing themselves as the "Titans of Soft Rock," Yächtley Crëw will get spectators loudly singing along with “Brandy (You're a Fine Girl") and “Escape (The Piña Colada Song)," plus kindred spirits songs by multiple-hit artists as lofty as Kenny Loggins, Christopher Cross, Toto, Steely Dan and Hall & Oates.

Yächtley Crëw's upcoming shows are April 28, Ardmore Music Hall, Ardmore, Pennsylvania; April 29, The Vine at Del Lago Resort, Waterloo, New York; April 30, Jergel's Rhythm Grill, Warrendale, Pennsylvania.; May 2, Sony Hall, New York City; May 4, Beacon Theatre; Hopewell, Virginia; May 5, Carteret Performing Arts Center, Carteret, New Jersey; and May 6, Tropicana Showroom, Atlantic City, New Jersey.

The California band delivers a fun but earnest tribute to yacht rock, a genre that saw its popularity multiply during the pandemic, as sort-of comfort food for people who grew up with 1970s and early-1980s soft rock.

"It's nostalgia and some of the most brilliant songwriters and best songs out there," Yächtley Crëw vocalist Philly Ocean said. "They capture an era, but it's also an attitude and a feeling, that maybe more than ever now, people need.

"I'm pleasantly surprised by how positively people have responded to what we're doing," he said. "I think that was amplified during the pandemic when live music had shut down. Seems now it's bigger than ever. We feel humbled in so many ways."

Yes, his six-man band wears matching stage uniforms of boat captain hats, sunglasses and blue blazers, but this isn't a Spinal Tap-ish spoof.

"We care about this music very much and bring energy and passion to this," Ocean said in an April 12 phone interview.

"Our goal is to make everyone who leaves the show think, 'Man, that's one of the best shows I've ever seen.' It's about how we perform these songs. Our goal is really to play these songs as true to the originals. People don't come to hear us do our own renditions. They're not looking for artistic interpretation. They want to hear us play versions as close to the originals they know. Because people want to sing along.

"I'm sure we've all seen a concert where an artist does an alt- version of their hit song, and you might think that's good, it's cool. But can you sing along to an alt-version?" Ocean said. "We play it like you remember it from some of the best musicians in history, bar none. And it's a show of hits. Every single song we play is a hit."

For those unfamiliar with the concept, '‘yacht rock'’ is a fairly recently coined term for the revival of the soft rock and top-shelf hits of the late '70s to the early '80s. The Yächtley Crëw website concedes much of it is overwrought story-driven narrative, but the music itself remains a treat.

"Some people call it Guilty Pleasure music," Ocean said. "We promise you'll know every song we play. You might not recognize the beginning of a few if you haven't heard them in 30 years, but once the chorus hits, you'll recognize it and be singing right along."

Insisting "We're not characters, we're personas," Ocean is joined on stage by Baba Buoy, bass guitar; Pauly Shores on sax, Tommy Buoy on guitar, Stoney Shores on keyboards, and Sailor Hawkins on drums. The drummer's name is an homage to the late-Taylor Hawkins of Foo Fighters, who Yächtley Crëw now honors with a cover of "Hero."

Yächtley Crëw members are in the same age group, first exposed to this meticulously produced, male-dominated genre as kids.

Ocean recalls riding in his dad's Chevrolet Beretta.

"He'd have the classic-rock radio station on, playing Toto and Steely Dan and Hall & Oates," he said.

Those musical stalwarts became inspirations, as did yacht rock vocalists like Michael McDonald and Kenny Loggins "who has a voice that's unparalleled," Ocean said.

Like any good genre, debates emerge as to who should or shouldn't qualify.

"We do 'Crazy Little Thing Called Love' by Queen, which is not yacht rock band," Ocean said. "The basic definition is soft rock, but we take our freedoms with it as all bands do. Just like a heavy metal band will put out a ballad.

"You know, it's very subjective. I define (yacht rock) as a feeling," he said. "Just imagine you're on a yacht, and what music is playing as you're just floating on the ocean or taking a swim before Jeeves brings you a tray of caviar. There's a freedom when you listen to it. It's all about love and having a good time. Memories of life moments are very specific to these songs."

Some acts are bona fide yacht rock for only part of their existence.

"Early Hall & Oates, like 'When The Morning Comes,' isn't necessarily yacht rock, but 'You Make My Dreams Come True' is," Ocean said. "It's a moment in time; it's when a song came out, but it's also about how it was produced and the elements of that song. It even comes down to the songwriting. But I'm very open to what people want to say is yacht rock. Like Billy Joel in the early '80s − 'Just The Way You Are' is in our set.

Does yacht rock have its own "Stairway to Heaven" stature song?

Maybe "Baker Street" by Gerry Rafferty, Boz Scaggs' "Lido Shuffle," Christopher Cross' "Ride Like The Wind," or Kenny Loggins' "Heart to Heart," Ocean said.

"And then you can start getting into deep cuts like "Thunder Island," and "Escape (The Pina Colada Song)". These are all songs from that genre."

More: Revisit the classic Genesis with Steve Hackett

Pivoting like many bands did during the pandemic, by performing drive-in theater concerts and connecting with fans via music videos, Yächtley Crëw is excited to get back in front of live audiences.

"Like we're playing Jergel's again, and could not be more excited. It's almost sold out, which is pretty amazing for a band from California only playing there for the second time," Ocean said. "And we're adding shows all the time, like Atlantic City.

"The whole point of the show is to have fun," he said. "And we love to meet everyone, so come say hi afterward."

Column: Your endless summer is brought to you by yacht rock and Yachtley Crew

Singer Philly Ocean, upper left, and Yachtley Crew bring yacht-rock hits to the Music Box in Little Italy on Sept. 10.

If you believe in calendars, summer is almost over. But if you believe in yacht rock, summer is never over.

“It’s kind of a made-up genre. But even if you don’t know what it is, if you hear it, you already get it,” said vocalist Philly Ocean (real name, Phillip Daniel) of the Los Angeles-based yacht-rock band Yachtley Crëw , which is playing a sold-out show at the Music Box in Little Italy on Sept. 10.

“It’s all of these easy-listening, feel-good tunes that go well with a piña colada on the deck of a yacht with the horizon off in the distance. Summer vibes are encapsulated in these songs.”

It will never be recognized by the Grammys, but yacht rock has become a pop-culturally accepted category for the semi-fizzy, sorta-jazzy soft-pop songs that ruled the charts in the late ‘70s and early ‘80s. Songs like Christopher Cross’ “Ride Like the Wind,” the Doobie Brothers’ “What a Fool Believes,” and every track on Steely Dan’s “Aja” album.

Donald Fagen, left, and Walter Becker of Steely Dan

But before it became a streaming-radio format, a brunch inspiration and the genesis of tribute bands with names like Yachty by Nature and Monsters of Yacht, yacht rock was a web series.

Created in 2005 by actors J.D. Ryznar and Hunter Stair, “Yacht Rock” was a deliberately cheesy, yet totally appreciative “mockumentary” series following the fictional lives and careers of such future yacht-rock heroes as Hall & Oates, Kenny Loggins and the Michael McDonald-era Doobie Brothers.

Once the series made its way to YouTube, it tickled the fancies of industry types who realized that re-branding soft rock as yacht rock could give these oldies new, hipster-approved life. Satellite- and streaming-radio stations began adding yacht-rock channels, and by 2016, these smooth tunes had made their way to the musicians who formed Yachtley Crëw.

According to Yachtley lore, the two veteran Los Angeles musicians who would go by the names of Sailor Hawkins (drums) and Baba Buoy (bass) were hanging out in a hot tub with their wives (“Probably drinking,” Ocean surmised), when they heard a satellite-radio yacht-rock station and had an epiphany.

One year later, they had a band.

“They thought, ‘Wouldn’t it be great to have a band and play just this music?,’” Ocean said. “When we would go around pitching to venues, club owners would look at us sideways like, ‘You play Christopher Cross? Who is going to listen to that on a Friday night?’ We would always say, ‘Just give us a shot.’”

Veteran soul and rock singer Michael McDonald is photographed at the Rose Cafe in Santa Barbara on April 19, 2017.

Four years and many Christopher Cross tunes later, Yachtley Crëw is playing sold-out shows in venues all over California and beyond; Ocean is singing to passionate crowds who know every word to Boz Scaggs’ “Lido Shuffle” and Jackson Browne’s “Somebody’s Baby”; and the genre started out as a goof has turned out to be a real happy thing.

And that is no joke.

“I think these songs have lasted because they are of the highest quality. The musicianship, the melodies, the lyrics, that is what has given them a long life and caused them to come back around,” Ocean said. “There is a zest for life that you can experience in every single one of these songs. They just make you feel good.”

Yachtley Crëw’s Sept. 10 show at the Music Box is sold out, but there are plenty of other ways to get your yacht-rock fix. Fire up the blender, crank up the tunes, and it will be smooth summer sailing all year long.

Streaming and satellite radio: Whether it’s Spotify’s 11-hour playlist or the stations curated by SiriusXM satellite radio and the LiveXLive streaming service, yacht rock’s non-stop happy hour is just a click away. Because they have a lot of digital space to fill, programmers have expanded the yacht universe to include such genre-questionable crew members as Van Morrison, Tommy Tutone and Eddie Money, but after a few umbrella drinks and a nap, it’s all good, matey.

Slate’s “Hit Parade” podcast: On his two-part “What a Fool Believes” episode, chart analyst and “Hit Parade” host Chris Molanphy gives the yacht-rock genre the thorough, musically astute analysis it deserves. We hear how its shiny roots stretch back to the legendary group of L.A. studio musicians known as the Wrecking Crew; how the sessions for Boz Scaggs’ “Silk Degrees” album are responsible for the existence of Toto; how Toto shaped Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” (It’s true!); and why the aforementioned “Aja” album set the itinerary for the stylish radio adventures that followed. Enlightenment, ahoy!

“Classic Albums: Steely Dan’s ‘Aja’”: Without this landmark 1977 album, there might be no yacht rock today. And without this 1999 episode of VH1’s essential “Classic Albums” series , we wouldn’t know the control-freaky lengths Steely Dan masterminds Walter Becker and Donald Fagen went to in their effort to achieve such glossy, effortless perfection. We also wouldn’t get to see guitarist Jay Graydon unfurl that classically casual “Peg” solo or watch Michael McDonald nailing those sweet, sweet layer-cake harmonies. You can stream it on IMDb TV with irritating, randomly placed commercials, or you can purchase the DVD and immerse yourself as yacht-rock nature intended. Don’t forget your snorkel.

Yachtley Crew is Southern California’s first-class tribute to the best soft rock of the 70s and 80s.

yachtley rock

What exactly is “yacht rock”?

DS:   Yacht rock is a sub-category of the highly polished brand of soft rock that emanated from Southern California during the late ’70s and early ’80s. The term is meant to suggest the kind of smooth, mellow music that early yuppies likely enjoyed while sipping champagne and partying on their yachts. Somewhere along the way, it was also once referred to as “west coast rock”.

How did the band get started?

Philly Ocean – Lead vocals. Front man extraordinaire and Captain of this Yächtley Crëw. His voice has tamed the sea herself, leaving only jealous pirates in his wake.

David Buoy – Percussion, vocals and on stage instigator.  Former major label recording artist, played in several other bands over his long career. Keep an eye out, or he may just make you walk the plank.

Tommy Buoy – Lead Guitar and vocals. Standing at 6 feet 5 inches, Tommy is the smoothest giant ever to don a captain’s hat.  His baritone vocals and velvety guitar solos are as cool as the ocean breeze.

Baba Buoy – Bass guitar and vocals. Having participated in many successful touring acts throughout his historical music career,Baba’s  bass playing is the wind that blows  the Crew’s  sails.

Sailor Hawkins – Drums and vocals. Sailor began his drumming career in 7th grade and shortly after graduating high school, he recorded and toured the U.S. and Europe for a number of successful major label bands. Sitting at the helm, his meticulous rhythms steer the Yachtley Crew from port to port.

Pauly Shores – Saxophone and vocals. Holding steady at the bow, mesmerizing audiences with acrobatic leaps  from bar top to bar stool and across the stages  of SoCal while soloing all along, Pauly’s  style is indicative of some of the smoothest sax lines ever played during  the 70s and 80s.

Stoney Shores – Keyboards and vocals. Lingering at the stern, he’ll tickle your fancy while tickling the keys as stage lights and the night stars twinkle in your eyes.

Artist Information

For those unfamiliar with the concept, ‘Yacht Rock’ is a fairly recently coined term for the revival of the soft rock and power ballad hits of the late 70’s to the early 80’s. And while yes, a lot of it is overwrought story-driven narrative, the music itself is still a guilty pleasure to listen to, watch and sing along!

Although just about everyone appreciates how ridiculous it is to sing along at the top of your lungs to “Brandy”, “Africa” or “Escape (The Piña Colada Song)”, it is a perfect example of the rediscovery of this era in music.

Yächtley Crëw, also known as, “The Titans of Soft Rock”, will reel you in with not only their great sound but also their silly and fun antics as they perform these timeless soft rock hits by Christopher Cross to Hall & Oates to Toto and more!

By being the first to have fun themselves with their heightened ironic songs, they keep it light enough to amuse the younger members of the crowd but respectful enough for those who remember singing along to all these hits on AM radio back in the day to enjoy, too! You will love the look of their thematic nautical suits and highly entertaining, cheeky, self-aware choreography.
