DISCOVER THE MODEL

Description.

The 80 Sunreef Power Great White accommodates up to eight guests within her comfortable four-cabin layout. Her propulsion comes from twin 1200HP engines allowing for a top speed of 23 knots and a cruising speed of 16 knots.

Her starboard hull houses the owner’s suite, one of the guest cabins, and the crew quarters. With generous living space, the master stateroom features a walk-in dressing, a sofa, a flip-down ceiling TV above the double bed, and a private fold-out balcony. On the other hand, the port hull accommodates for two more roomy guest cabins as well as the well-equipped galley of the power catamaran .

Great White’s light-filled saloon welcomes guests with two oversized lounging sofas by the aft cockpit, a dining space for eight, and two 77’’ TVs installed back-to-back. An additional lounging spot was set up next to the bow terrace entrance to achieve a flow state onboard the 80 Sunreef Power .

The power catamaran’s full-beam stern cockpit provides for an outstanding alfresco dining space that is well protected from the sun and fitted with a weatherproof TV. Below the large sofa, Great White’s aft garage conceals a large jet-ski and a selection of water toys along with a refueling station. A wide hydraulic swim platform has been installed to carry the yacht’s tender and offer an additional sunbathing spot beside the water.

What is more is that the flybridge of the 80 Sunreef Power Great White provides guests with an exterior lounge arranged in cozy seating areas, a bar, big sunpads and a pop-up TV.

Boat of the Week: Meet the 443-Foot ‘Sunrise,’ the World’s Largest Open Sport Gigayacht

At 443 feet, this gigayacht will be the largest day boat ever. beyond size, its wave-piercing hull and 24-knot top end are breakthroughs., michael verdon, michael verdon's most recent stories.

Sunrise is the world's largest open yacht, measuring 433 feet in length

Designing a 443-foot day boat sounds like an exercise in madness, or perhaps futility, if the designer ever hopes to find a buyer. But Italian designer Roberto Curto is used to breaking through established norms, even if what lies on the other side is more fantasy than working vessel.

The Genoa studio’s newest project, Sunrise, might seem like one of those impossible dreams, if it didn’t look so damned beautiful. The boat stretches from stern to bow in a gentle arc that emphasizes four football fields’ worth of exterior space, with a large but organic-looking superstructure that hugs the water, rather than jutting upwards across multiple decks towards the sky.

“The idea was to have a big yacht that doesn’t look like a traditional wedding cake,” says Jim Evans, managing director of SuperYachtsMonaco , the agency tasked with finding a buyer for Sunrise. “Because it’s missing all those layers, it doesn’t have a huge amount of interior volume or weight. It’ll have the more traditional uses of an open day boat.”

Project Sunrise is the world's largest open day boat in a gigayacht size.

“I wanted to bring the sport life to gigayachts,” adds Curto. “At the moment, there is nothing this radical.”

The concept is more than a set of drawings displaying a beautiful boat. Curto designed a wave-piercing hull for the bow that actually slides under waves when confronted with big seas, providing stability and speed in rough conditions. “It’s similar to the hulls on some submarines and military vessels,” says Curto. “I have a 34-foot boat that I designed with the same hull and it works fine, so I expect it will work on this larger scale.”

The submerged bow seems like it would actually perform in real-world conditions, thanks to the long, open forefoot on the forward end.

Project Sunrise is the world's largest open day boat in a gigayacht size.

Besides looking cool, the wave-piercing bow actually submerges under water in big seas–similar to some naval vessels–to increase efficiency in rough conditions.  Courtesy Roberto Curto Design

In the images, Sunrise is certainly an open design, but there are no people to show how vast—giga-sized—the spaces really are. The swim platform, for instance, is about 36 feet deep and, thanks to the 66-foot beam, the aft swimming pool is a good 50 feet wide. An outdoor dining table seats 22. On the bow are another large pool, helipad, and even a jet-ski docking area. To get a sense of scale, running four laps along Sunshine’s edges would equal a mile.

The reason why the concept works is that Curto didn’t try to fill the space with dozens of small rooms across five or six decks. Some gigas feel like a maze in a massive hull. Curto, instead, kept the spaces simple, open and zen-like across the yacht.

A massive, atrium-like entrance to the interior, defined by huge glass panels, is connected to the long bow. The main salon has a sculpture shaped like a giant drop of rain splattering on the floor, with open circular panels extending through the decks above, as if it had just fallen from the sky. Round white concentric circles designed into the floor show the drop’s splatter pattern. A few lounges and tables are placed within, but otherwise the space is vast and empty.

Project Sunrise is the world's largest open day boat in a gigayacht size.

On the upper deck is an observation lounge which, apart from the pilothouse, another exterior lounge area, gym, dining area and the staterooms, is pretty much the complete layout. The owner’s suite, like the main salon, is immense, with its own gym and outdoor patio. The tender garage in the lower deck is also enormous, with space for multiple boats and water toys.

The hull design gives Sunrise a top end of 24 knots; Curto is working with an engine builder to create a hybrid electric-diesel propulsion system using azipods at the stern for speed and efficiency gains.

In the end, however, the main impression is the yacht’s elegant, open design, with the subtle curves. “One thing we’ve noticed in the last five years is the growing demand for extra-luxurious exterior spaces,” says Evans. “The exterior needs to be just as exclusive as the interior.”

Project Sunrise is the world's largest open day boat in a gigayacht size.

The deja-vu exterior design includes a second, very large swimming pool on the forward end of the yacht.  Courtesy Roberto Curto Design

Evans would like to see scaled-down versions of the yacht, perhaps 250 or 300 feet, that would have a larger potential pool of buyers. Still, he’s very happy with the design. “If I’d challenged other yacht designers in the beauty parade with a concept like this, they’d come back with something quite conventional, akin to a small cruise ship,” he says. “A lot of clients will be attracted to a design like Sunrise. They’ll really like the sporty lines and the fact that it still looks like a private yacht, despite the giga size.”

For Curto, buyer or not, Sunrise remains an exercise in creativity. “It’s really there to push the limits, to let clients see we can create something different,” he says. “We see it as innovation on the water.”

Yacht classification definitions

The merchant shipping sector is ruled by safety regulations developed since the beginning of the 20th century, and is familiar with international conventions such as SOLAS, MARPOL and Load Lines. But the application of common safety requirements to pleasure vessels is something relatively new – a continuous work in progress – and is very much dependant on the service and the flag of the yacht.

Defining the problems

Definitions do not help. How often have we read of large yachts, superyachts, megayachts, gigayachts or other bombastic adjectives? How many times have we mentioned MCA, RINA, and Lloyd’s, without having a clear idea of who’s doing what?

A good starting point for understanding the subject is to clarify the main definitions and the roles of the main players:

Large yacht

A large yacht is a pleasure vessel with a load line length equal to or over 24m. Almost all the flag administrations have adopted safety codes dedicated to large yachts and this is, therefore, the only definition having a universal meaning in the international regulatory framework of yachts.

Commercial yacht

A motor or sailing vessel in commercial use (i.e. charter) for sport and pleasure, carrying no cargo and not more than 12 passengers.

Private yacht

A pleasure vessel solely used for the recreational and leisure purpose of its owner and his guests.

Flag administration

The government of the state whose flag the yacht is entitled to fly . This administration sets the safety regulations, manning requirements and fiscal aspects relevant to the yacht registration.

Different flag administrations can inspect the safety aspects of yachts with their own inspectors (see MCA for example) or delegate this activity partially or totally to other recognised bodies such as the classification societies.

The main flag authorities in the yachting industry are: The UK-MCA, Cayman Islands, Isle of Man, Malta, the Marshall Islands, Italy and Luxembourg.

Classification societies

Organisations that establish and apply technical standards in relation to the design, construction and survey of ships.

Classification rules are developed to assess the structural strength and integrity of the essential parts of the hull, the reliability and function of the propulsion, steering systems, power generation and all the other features installed on board which contribute to guarantee the main essential services.

In addition to this ‘third party check’ function, class societies carry out statutory duties on behalf of the major flag administrations in accordance with specific delegation agreements signed with each government.

The main class societies involved in yachting are: American Bureau of Shipping, Bureau Veritas, Det Norske Veritas, Germanischer Lloyd, Lloyd’s Register, and RINA.

Large yachts: Applicable rules and certificates

Private yachts

The mandatory requirements for these boats are very light. For the majority of flag states, a registration survey and a tonnage measurement, carried out by an authorised surveyor, are sufficient.

The only mandatory international conventions are those relevant to the marine environment: MARPOL and the Anti-Fouling System Convention.

The International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships (MARPOL) is intended to eliminate the intentional pollution and to minimise the accidental pollution of the marine environment caused by harmful substances.

The Anti-Fouling System Convention’s purpose is to eliminate the presence of harmful substances for the marine environment contained in anti-fouling paints applied to ships.

Classification

While classification is not mandatory, building and maintaining a private yacht in class is the only evidence that the boat has been designed, constructed and operated in compliance with appropriate technical standards. It is therefore highly desirable, especially in relation to insurance and re-sale purposes.

Commercial yachts

All flag administrations require commercial yachts to be certified in accordance with a specific large yacht safety code.

The most popular of these safety codes, and the first that was developed, is the MCA Large Commercial Yacht Code (LY2) published in 2004. It replaced the Code of Practice for the Safety of Large Commercial Sailing and Motor Vessels (LY1) published in 1997.

LY2 is applied by the Red Ensign Group Flags (UK, Cayman Islands, Isle of Man, Bermuda, Gibraltar, British Virgin Islands, etc.) and is recognised as a reference standard for all the yachting industry.

Other flags have developed similar codes. Luxembourg, Italy, Marshall Islands, Malta, Belize and The Netherlands are some examples.

While introducing a stricter set of rules and regulations compared to private yachts, commercial registration offers yacht owners the possibility of making a profit from the chartering activity of their boats, and allows them to take advantage of all the other benefits of a commercial operation (in particular VAT exemption on the purchase, sale, bunkering, provisions, dry-docking, and others).

Mandatory certificates

The number and type of the mandatory certificates depends on the size of the vessel; the following is an indicative list:

  • International Tonnage Certificate : A measurement of the internal volumes of the yacht expressed in gross tons (GT). This measurement should not be confused with displacement tonnage, which quantifies the weight of a vessel.
  • Large Yacht Code Certificate : Covers life-saving appliances, fire protection and means of escape, navigational and signalling equipment, intact and damaged stability, manning and crew accommodation.
  • Class Certificate : This mainly deals with the yacht’s hull, machinery, electrical equipment and outfitting.
  • International Load Line Certificate : This certifies the weather-tightness of the yacht.
  • Safety Radio Certificate : This is applicable if gross tonnage exceeds 300GT This concerns the radio communication and distress installations.
  • MARPOL Annex I Certificate : This is applicable if gross tonnage exceeds 400GT This deals with the disposal of oil and bilge water from machinery spaces.
  • MARPOL Annex IV Certificate : This is applicable if gross tonnage exceeds 400 or the yacht is certified to carry over 15 persons. This deals with the disposal of sewage from ships.
  • MARPOL Annex V : This is applicable to all ships. It covers the disposal of rubbish.
  • MARPOL Annex VI : This is applicable if gross tonnage exceeds 400GT as well as to all main and auxiliary engines with a power exceeding 130kW. It concerns the emissions from main and auxiliary engines (NOx and SOx).
  • Safety Construction and Safety Equipment : These are additional prescriptions on machinery, electrical parts, life-saving and navigational equipment for yachts with a gross tonnage above 500GT.
  • International Safety Management Certificate : This is only applicable to yachts having a gross tonnage greater than 500GT. A certified management company is requested to carry out this service, preparing operational manuals, procedures for drills, and taking care of the maintenance of the yacht and its installations.
  • International Ship and Port Security Certificate : This is only applicable to yachts having a gross tonnage greater than 500GT and deals with the anti-piracy certification. A certified management company is requested to provide the ashore assistance and establish on-board procedures and operational manuals.

The GT Factor

The gross tonnage value (GT) is a key issue, not only as a reference for the registration fees applied by the different flag administrations, but also because it determines whether an international convention, rather than a particular safety standard, applies to a yacht.

The table below summarises how the conventions and relevant certificates come into force depending on the gross tonnage of the yacht. In particular, the following values may have a critical impact:

300GT: In many codes, when you reach this value the yacht must be certified in unrestricted service (stricter requirements regarding stability, load line and life-saving appliances).

400GT: This is the threshold for almost all the environmental conventions such as MARPOL and Anti-fouling System.

500GT: This is the threshold for the application of the SOLAS Convention, meaning stricter requirements on machinery, safety systems, materials of construction, fire protection, life-saving appliances and navigational equipment. Furthermore an external certified management company is requested for the ISM and ISPS certifications.

The tonnage issue could also arise on existing yachts when undertaking major refits or modifications, in that any change to the internal volumes of the boat – such as adding enclosed deckhouses or superstructures, or modifying the hull transom or bow – will modify the tonnage value with the risk of subjecting the yacht to stricter mandatory rules.

UPDATE: Since this article was originally published, LY2 has been superseded by Large Commercial Yacht Code Revision 3 (LY3) .

What Are The Big White Balls on Top of Cruise Ships? – Radome Guide

If you’ve ever been on a cruise ship, you may have wondered what the big white ball shapes are that you’ll find on the top of a lot of cruise ships.

They often resemble giant golf balls and you’ll usually find multiples on a cruise ship. They’re very obvious on Royal Caribbean, Carnival, and MSC cruise ships.

What Are The Big White Balls on Top of Cruise Ships?

The big white balls on top of cruise ships are Radomes. A Radome is made up of two parts, a Radar and a Dome, hence the name Ra-dome. The dome covers the radar equipment protecting it from the weather and hiding it from guests. A radome can also include satelitte equipment.

Radomes contain rotating radar antennas and satellite discs, which will be constantly on the move. Radomes are designed to allow movement not only from the radar itself but also from the ship. The ship is subject to movements caused by weather and the ocean, so it is critical that the Radome is large enough to allow this movement.

The satellite equipment held within Radomes is used for communication, entertainment and navigation purposes.

What are Radomes on Cruise Ships Used For?

The majority of cruise ships have more than one Radome. Cruise ships need a lot of equipment and also need to have backups available should one fail.

Radomes have multiple functions:

Radomes Provide Protection From The Weather

Radomes are used by cruise lines for multiple reasons, one of the most important being that they provide a weatherproof enclosure for any radar equipment.

Due to their location on the top deck of the ship, the equipment has to withstand rain, wind and any other bad weather elements such as sleet or hail.

Ice is particularly troublesome for any equipment and on some cruise routes, the cruise ship may experience snow and ice build-up. If the equipment housed within the dome was to get icy, this could cause big problems for the cruise line.

Protecting the equipment within with a Radome also means that the cruise line has to replace the equipment less often and therefore can save money by installing the domes.

Radomes Hide Radar Equipment

It’s unlikely that guests taking a cruise would appreciate looking at the radar equipment of a ship or having this in their photos.

Some of us may enjoy this but the majority would not. Personally I find it quite interesting but most prefer the look of the Radome covers.

The white round shapes of the Radomes are inconspicuous and unlikely to be noticed by the majority of cruisers. Even if you’ve cruised multiple times it’s unlikely that you’ve ever noticed the Radomes.

cruise ship white balls on top radomes

Radomes Protect Passengers

Having the radar equipment inside the Radome provides protection for the passengers of the ship. Some parts of radars rotate and keeping these hidden away in the Radome reduces the risk of any accidents.

Guests really shouldn’t be climbing on the radar equipment on the top of the cruise ship but people often do silly things.

What Are Cruise Ship Radomes Made From?

Radomes on cruise ships are usually made of fiberglass, a reinforced plastic using glass fibers, or a PTFE treated fabric.

Radomes on cruise ships are constructed with materials that very minimally reduces the electromagnetic signal transmitted or received by the antenna. The Radome casing is effectively almost transparent to the radio waves that pass through it.

Radomes are usually made by independent contractors, they work to certain standards but the equipment inside the Radome may change over time and the Radome is designed to allow this.

Are Cruise Ship Radomes Always Ball Shaped?

Radomes in general can be built in multiple shapes, they can be spherical shapes, geodesic shapes (incomplete spheres) or almost any other shape.

The most common shapes for radomes have a curved top. This shape is aerodynamic and because the wind on a ship can come from any direction, the curved edge of the radome is able to deal with this.

If you are cruising on a cruise ship where the radomes aren’t immediately obvious, this doesn’t mean that there aren’t any.

It means that they are likely another shape or hidden away.

cruise ship white balls radome

Why Are The Radomes on Cruise Ships White?

Radomes are usually white because white is the best color for keeping the contents of the Radar cool. A black or darkly coloured Radome would attract heat from the sun and could cause problems for the equipment inside.

Cruise lines are able to change Radomes but they usually last for multiple years. It isn’t an easy job to change a Radome as the video below shows:

Is It Just Cruise Ships Have That Have White Ball Shaped Radomes?

It isn’t just cruise ships that have Radomes which are white and ball shaped. Many other types of ships also have a very similar design.

Radomes are common in the airline industry too. The front ‘nose’ part of an airplane is a Radome protecting the equipment inside while providing an aerodynamic shape.

Other ships, helicopters and buildings will also have Radomes. Many buildings will have Radomes covering the satellite equipment on top of the roof.

Below is an example of a very large Radome from the Research Institute for High Frequency Physics and Radar Techniques in Germany.

FGAN Research Institute for High Frequency Physics and Radar Techniques

Do All Cruise Ships Have Radomes?

All cruise ships have radars but not all have Radomes. Some ships may have their radar equipment out of site and some may leave it uncovered.

Some ships may have fake Radomes, although this is more common on Yachts and other ships as opposed to cruise ships.

Some shipowners may even install empty Radomes for security purposes in order to ‘trick’ other people into thinking that they have more equipment than they do. Similar to how some home owners install fake burglar alarms.

To Conclude:

The white ball shapes on top of cruise ships are Radomes. These are a combination of a radio equipment and a dome. Cruise ships have Radomes to protect radar and satellite equipment from the weather and to improve the appearance of the equipment for guests.

Demi Moore on Full Frontal Nudity With Margaret Qualley in ‘The Substance’: ‘A Very Vulnerable Experience’ but I Had a ‘Great Partner Who I Felt Very Safe With’

CANNES, FRANCE - MAY 19: Demi Moore and her dog Pilaf attend a photocall at the 77th annual Cannes Film Festival at the Carlton Cannes Hotel on May 19, 2024 in Cannes, France. (Photo by Pascal Le Segretain/Getty Images)

Demi Moore ‘s new film, the feminist body horror “ The Substance ,” sees her bare it all, with several scenes featuring full nudity. At the Cannes Film Festival press conference for the film on Monday, the 61-year-old actor discussed the “vulnerable experience.”

“Going into it, it was really spelled out — the level of vulnerability and rawness that was really required to tell the story,” Moore said. “And it was a very vulnerable experience and just required a lot of sensitivity and a lot of conversation about what we were trying to accomplish.”

“I had someone who was a great partner who I felt very safe with. We obviously were quite close  — naked — and we also got a lot of levity in those moments at how absurd those certain situations were,” she said. “But ultimately. it’s just about really directing your communication and mutual trust.”

As the film progresses, Moore becomes horribly disfigured thanks to the abuse her other half Qualley is inflicting on her. By the film’s last act, she quite resembles Anjelica Huston from the 1990 film “The Witches,” after she transforms into a humpback abomination.

Dennis Quaid also stars in the film as an “asshole,” as he described his character during the presser. The late Ray Liotta was meant to have the role before his passing in May 2022, and Quaid dedicated his performance to him.

“In my heart, I dedicated this role to Ray Liotta, who was set to play it,” Quaid said. “It was this week, two years ago that he passed, so I’d like to remember him. He was such an incredible actor.”

Cannes went wild for “The Substance” at its premiere on Sunday night, giving the film an 11-minute standing ovation , the longest of the fest so far.

In an interview with Variety , the French director discussed the film’s feminist themes, saying that body horror is “the perfect vehicle to express the violence all these women’s issues are about.”

With an undercurrent of #MeToo at this year’s festival as the movement grows in France, Fargeat hopes the film will shine even more light on the issue. “It’s a little stone in the huge wall we still have to build regarding this issue, and to be honest, I hope my film will also be one of the stones of that wall. That’s really what I intended to do with it.”

Queen's music catalog being sold to sony for over $1 billion, queen music catalog being sold for over $1 billion ... sony music's big $plash.

Queen's catalog is about to change hands, and it'll be an expensive acquisition -- 'cause Sony's acquiring the rights to the band's music ... spending 10 figures to lock it down.

The massive transaction -- valued at about $1.27 billion -- involves Queens' royalties for recorded music rights in the United States and Canada, plus a distribution deal outside the U.S. and Canada ... according to Variety.

Sony Music is buying the rights that used to belong to Disney, while Queen's distribution deal is currently managed by Universal and is going to expire in a couple years, at which point Sony will take the reins.

The deal does NOT include revenue from live performances ... founding members Brian May and Roger Taylor are holding on to that slice of the pie. They still tour with Adam Lambert .

Sony Music beat out a mystery bidder, who reportedly would not offer more than $900 million.

Queen's music catalog is super valuable ... the band has tons of hits, including "Another One Bites the Dust," "Bohemian Rhapsody," "Somebody to Love," "We Are The Champions" and "We Will Rock You" ... just to name a few.

This transaction is several years in the making ... and negotiations with Sony reportedly picked up this year, with the company finally sealing the deal.

The Queen deal is more than double what Sony Music paid for Bruce Springsteen 's music catalog ... they shelled out about $500 million back in 2021 for Bruce's tunes.

Michael Jackson 's estate sold his music for $600 million ... and Queen doubled MJ up here too. It just speaks to the band's lasting popularity all these years later ... folks love 'em.

Mama, just paid a man.

BIG ROCK: ‘Game Time’ wins Big Rock tournament; ‘Pipe Down’ closes out tournament with 425.1 lbs fish

M OREHEAD CITY, N.C. (WITN) - ‘Game Time’ is this year’s Big Rock Blue Marlin Tournament winner after four boats on the final day failed to crack the top 3.

‘Pipe Down’ was greeted by a hero’s welcome at Big Rock Landing as the 4th and final fish to be weighed at this year’s tournament.

The blue marlin came in at 425.1 lbs just short of the 3rd place fish brought in by ‘Builder’s Choice’ at 431.8 pounds.

‘Game Time’ takes home $1.8 million for their 1st place 516 lbs catch that they reeled in on Monday.

The third blue marlin to be weighed Saturday, this one from ‘Full Cry,’ did not qualify at 320 lbs.

‘A-Salt-Weapon’ brought in the second blue marlin of the day that didn’t qualify at 387.6 lbs.

‘Wasabi’ was the first in of the day and brought in a blue marlin that also did not meet the tournament minimum of 400 lbs.

On Friday, 14 blue marlins and 3 white marlins were released and 115 out of the 302 boats fished.

Boats can only fish for four of the six days of the tournament and 186 boats chose to stay put today.

The National Weather Service said boaters were facing 3 to 5-foot waves and winds blowing from the North East at 5 to 15 mph, along with the chance of showers and isolated storms today.

Thursday was the third day in a row that no marlins were caught, and the standings haven’t changed since Monday.

In second place is ‘Release’ with their 504-pound catch, also on Monday. That catch being the first over 500 pounds, won over $1.7 million in the Fabulous Fisherman category.

Builder’s Choice held on to snag the 3rd place spot with their 431.8 lbs catch.

Both 2nd and 3rd place are leaving Big Rock with over $1 million in prize money for their positioning.

This is the 66th year for Big Rock, which lasts until Saturday.

That's all of our live coverage on the conflict for now.

We'll bring you any major developments overnight, and we'll be back with our regular updates in the morning.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy has said he is "deeply grateful" for Joe Biden's decision to prioritise air defence deliveries for Ukraine.

The Ukrainian president said his country was in critical need of the capabilities to protect its cities and civilians from Russian attacks.

"The partnership between Ukraine and the United States is strong and unwavering. Together, we are protecting life against terror and aggression," he added.

It comes after the US said a recent defence pact signed by Russia and North Korea was a "cause for concern".

The recently signed defence pact between Russia and North Korea is a cause of concern but is no surprise, the White House has said.

Speaking to reporters, White House spokesman John Kirby said the agreement between the two countries was a sign of Russia's desperation for foreign assistance in the Ukraine war.

The deal has seen both countries vow to help each other if they faced armed aggression, and replaces previous treaties between the countries.

Russia said the pact was needed because of "the deep evolution of the geopolitical situation in the world and the region".

Mr Kirby also said the US would reprioritise planned deliveries of foreign military equipment to go to Ukraine, which is in "desperate need" of more air defence capabilities.

Vladimir Putin has warned that South Korea would be making a "big mistake" if it decides to supply weapons to Ukraine.

The Russian president's comments come after South Korea said a new defence agreement between North Korea and Moscow was "absurd" and it would reconsider sending arms to Kyiv as a result.

Mr Putin said Seoul had nothing to worry about when it came to the mutual defence pact.

Russian state media quoted him as saying that Moscow expected its cooperation with North Korea to serve as a deterrent to the West.

He also refused to rule out supplying high-precision weapons to the country.

Russia is considering making changes to its nuclear weapons doctrine, Vladimir Putin has said.

The Russian president made the comments while speaking to reporters at the end of his Vietnam trip.

The existing doctrine states that Russia may use such weapons in response to a nuclear strike or in the event of a conventional attack that poses an existential threat to the country.

Ukrainian troops have been launching mid-range reconnaissance drones in Kharkiv.

Russian forces crossed into parts of the northeastern region last month, and officials claim they have seized at least a dozen villages.

But Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has said Kyiv's forces are gradually pushing Russian troops out of the contested area.

A police search is under way for a woman who allegedly desecrated the graves of Ukrainian soldiers.

Kyiv city's prosecutor's office said the unknown woman vandalised the graves this morning.

Commemorative plaques and lamps were torn off and broken, it said.

The Ukrainian flag was also "mutilated", it added.

"Operational investigations and searches are being carried out to establish the woman's identity," the office said in post on Telegram.

If caught and found guilty, the woman could face up to five years in prison.

We have been reporting today on Vladimir Putin's visit to Vietnam.

Here is a recap of what the Russian president has been up to:

  • Mr Putin signed a series of deals with his Vietnamese counterpart To Lam during his state visit;
  • The two leaders signed agreements to further co-operation on education, science and technology, oil and gas exploration and health;
  • They also agreed to work on a road map for a nuclear science and technology centre in Vietnam;
  • Following the talks, Mr Putin said that the two countries share an interest in "developing a reliable security architecture" in the Asia-Pacific region based on not using force and peacefully settling disputes with no room for "closed military-political blocs";
  • The Russian leader also met Vietnam's Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh and is scheduled to meet Communist Party general secretary Nguyen Phu Trong - Vietnam's most powerful politician;
  • The trip has resulted in a sharp rebuke from the US embassy in the country.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy has said Romania's decision to provide his country with two Patriot air defence systems will strengthen security in Ukraine and throughout Europe.

"This crucial contribution will bolster our air shield and help us better protect our people and critical infrastructure from Russian air terror," the Ukrainian president said on X.

The Patriot, which stands for Phased Array Tracking Radar for Intercept on Target, is a surface-to-air missile defence system.

For months now, Ukraine has been calling for countries to provide more air defence systems to help protect it from Russian attacks.

The next NATO leader is now all but certain after Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte's last rival dropped out of the race.

He's now the only person running to be Jens Stoltenberg's successor when he steps down from the secretary-general role in October.

Romanian President Klaus Iohannis dropped out of the race earlier today and Hungary lifted its veto on Mr Rutte's candidacy, paving the way for NATO to put on a show of unity over support for Ukraine.

Mr Rutte's appointment could be sealed by a meeting of NATO ambassadors in the coming days, or by the leaders when they meet in Washington in July for the alliance's 75th birthday.

NATO secretaries-general are responsible for chairing meetings and guiding consultations among the 32 member countries to ensure that the organisation, which operates on consensus, can continue to function.

Mr Rutte has already had to assure Hungary that he will not force it to take part in NATO plans to provide support to Ukraine.

Turkey, which had voiced opposition to Mr Rutte's bid earlier this year, has also lifted its objections.
