What is prw.

It’s a powerboat racing website that has covered circuit racing, offshore racing and PWC since 2016. Maintained by The Race Factory based in Norway who have specialists in event planning and promotion, social media, graphic design, and photography. We are currently working on our vision and believe that we can and will make a different in powerboating. We will dedicate our time to produce accurate factual stories and to promote the sport to a wider global audience.

electric powerboat racing

The world’s first electric powerboat championship was launched today at the Monaco Yacht Club with plans for a global series on seas and lakes that will drive forward the electric revolution in the marine environment.

The UIM E1 World Electric Powerboat Series is the brainchild of Spanish businessman Alejandro Agag, the founder of Formula E and Extreme E; Rodi Basso, former Director of Motorsport at McLaren, and Dr Raffaele Chiulli President of the Union Internationale Motonautique (UIM).

Agag says the time is right to bring the spectacular advances that have been made with electric power in motorsport to the marine environment.

He hopes not only to establish a new sporting classic but also to make a lasting contribution to improving the health of the seas and oceans.

I am delighted that we are today able to announce this unique step forward in marine-based sport. We believe this series will engage not only the sporting public, and boating and tech enthusiasts around the world, but also ocean conservationists who care about the future of our planet. The earth’s oceans, lakes and rivers are under huge environmental pressure and the E1 World Electric Powerboat Series will lead the way in electrifying water mobility for future generations. Right now the use of electric power on the water is still at an embryonic stage. My ambition is for the E1 Series to accelerate the adoption of electric boats, to demonstrate how exciting they can be and to promote electric solutions and clean water mobility to marine travel worldwide.

While Agag will be non-executive chairman of the new venture, Rodi Basso, an Italian former aerospace engineer who has worked with NASA, Ferrari and Red Bull in Formula 1, and Magneti Marelli and McLaren Applied Technologies in the high tech industry, will take the Chief Executive role.

Basso and Agag got together to brainstorm the new idea in London during lockdown, Basso who is also a passionate sailor said:

The sea for me is something very important as an expression of nature and somewhere I always go to re-charge my batteries, so this project is the perfect way to celebrate that. During 20 years of competition in motor racing I have always dreamt of using motorsport to demonstrate and gain visibility around a technology and then build solutions with it in other fields. With this championship we are going to accelerate the take-up of electric technology in the marine industry by bringing the huge technological advances and expertise from motor racing. We are going to produce a thrilling and exciting sporting spectacle that will appeal to millions of fans worldwide.

Basso says the series, which will be associated closely with Extreme E, will develop on a tight timescale with an intense testing and build schedule for the new boats.

The UIM E1 World Electric Powerboat Series features high-performance racing boats powered entirely by electric propulsion systems racing on short courses at prestigious city-based and stunning remote locations around the world.

The futuristic RaceBird boats being developed for the Series incorporate hydrofoil technology, will be driven by single pilots and will be capable of achieving breath taking speeds of up to 60 knots – 111 km/hr or 69 mph.

The boats are being developed by SeaBird Technologies, a start-up based in the UK that will partner with other companies involved in high performance water vessels to produce a super-fast and superlight, largely one-design race boat.

Designed by Sophi Horne in collaboration with the designers Sanjay Yadav, Dhruv Khosla, and Avhirup Ghosh for SeaBird Technologies, the boats are going to look like nothing else on the water.

The concept will be developed in partnership with SailGP, a global racing league that features the world’s fastest sail racing.

As part of the strategic partnership, SailGP will also provide support for event and logistics management.

SailGP CEO Sir Russell Coutts commented on the project:

This is an incredibly exciting partnership that allows us to continue accelerating change toward a cleaner future. We are powered by nature, and SailGP and E1 share a similar sense of purpose to be leading examples of sustainable technology.

The plan is to attract up to 12 teams which will each purchase two boats, one based in Europe and one that will be stored on the St Helena, a refurbished former Royal Mail Ship that the Series will use as a ‘floating paddock’ for races outside Europe.

The pilots for the inaugural E1 Series are expected to come from a range of backgrounds with some from existing powerboating championships and others making a transition from road vehicle electric technology to the water.

Each E1 race weekend will comprise testing and qualifying and then a series of knock-out races leading to a final which will produce one winner.

An annual overall world champion will be decided by cumulative scores throughout the season.

Success on the racecourse will depend not just on speed in varying conditions but on a pilot’s ability to preserve energy, with unlimited charging allowed for testing and qualifying each weekend, but a finite supply for the quarter-finals, semi-finals and final.

E1 will race in amazing remote locations in parallel with Extreme E and also in some of the most glamorous cities in the world. Fans can look forward to experiencing incredible landscapes and fabulous urban waterfronts as they follow the broadcast of the Series around the world.

The new Series has been exclusively licensed by the UIM, the international governing body of powerboating.

Its President, Dr Raffaele Chiulli said the organisation enthusiastically supports a new event which aims to contribute to the preservation of the marine environment.

As the IOC-recognised world governing body for all powerboating activities, we at UIM are excited to have this opportunity to support and foster the preservation of the marine environment and to establish and implement good practices towards a more sustainable future. The UIM is delighted to support scientific research and its dissemination, as this will support awareness-raising activities on the many environmental and climate specific challenges that the world faces today. The launch of this initiative signals the UIM’s ability to lead by example, and to take action to preserve a healthy marine environment, which is vital for the future of our planet. We are proud to partner with Alejandro Agag, Rodi Basso and E1, and I am confident that this initiative, alongside Extreme E, will accelerate sustainable mobility at global level.

E1 RaceBird

Leave it to two motorsport legends to bring Formula E to the high seas. Alejandro Agag and Rodi Basso recently announced plans to hold the world’s first electric powerboat racing championship in 2023. Now, the duo has unveiled the very vessel that will underpin the nascent E1 series .

Designed in partnership with SeaBird Technologies and Victory Marine , the high-powered 23-footer goes by the name of RaceBird. As the moniker might suggest, it was inspired by birds flying low over the ocean. That’s fitting given that the powerboat is equipped with hydrofoil wings that allow it to rise 1.6 feet above the water and soar at breakneck speeds. This setup is also said to reduce wake and increase efficiency while on the seas.

Crafted predominately from carbon fiber, the powerboat has a fighting weight of 1,764 pounds (800 kg). It sports a single center-mounted propeller and outboard electric motors that promise an exhilarating maximum speed of 50 knots. Of course, the electric vessel flies silently and sustainably sans any emissions, just like our feathered friends of the skies.

To top it off, RaceBird has a sleek silhouette and futuristic aesthetic that wouldn’t look out of place in a Star Wars flick. The enclosed canopy is positioned toward the rear of the vessel similar to a Jedi Starfighter, and the vessel evidently packs a lot of “force.”

RaceBird will be joined by a full flock of fellow racers, too. Engineers from Victory Marine will be building a fleet of race-ready electric powerboats in the upcoming months for the forthcoming E1 Series.

“Now that the design has been fully validated, we’ll begin engineering and manufacturing the boats in preparation for prototype testing and ready for the teams to receive their first delivery,” Brunello Acampora, founder and CEO of Victory Marine, said in a statement .

The E1 Series’ originators both bring long racing résumés. Agag is best known for co-founding Formula E and Extreme E while Basso has been a Formula 1 engineer for the likes of Ferrari and Red Bull Racing. The series is also being backed by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund , which will help further accelerate preparations for the inaugural season.

Once in full swing, the E1 Series will see up to 12 teams competing on the water in spectacular global locations. The pilots, who are expected to hail from both powerboat racing and auto racing, will tackle tight and technical circuits in speedy electric powerboats capable of reaching up to 50 knots.

The E1 world electric powerboat series: everything you need to know

By Dominic Bliss

Prince Albert II of Monaco at a boat launch is quite the occasion. So, in September, when a storm threatened to dampen the unveiling of a new electric speedboat race series at the Yacht Club de Monaco, the presence of His Excellency ensured guests bore the rain with a certain stoicism. Even when that rain caused the public address system to short circuit, no one minded too much.

There were hundreds gathered to view a speedboat called RaceBird, a sleek, seven-metre long craft which will be the star of the new E1 World Electric Powerboat Series, due to commence in the spring of 2023.

Image may contain Transportation Vehicle Aircraft and Airplane

The carbon-fibre prototype – in-the-water tests are planned for next year – will have a speed of 50 knots, powered by an electric outboard motor, using hydrofoils to lift it clear of the water and avoid excess drag. Its beautifully streamlined body makes it look a little like Luke Skywalker ’s Airspeeder from Star Wars , while the huge, clawed hydrofoils folding beneath its hull give it the air of a Klingon spaceship from Star Trek .

If all goes according to plan, 12 teams (yet to be confirmed) will be piloting RaceBirds at aquatic venues all over the planet. So far, Monaco is the only confirmed location. However, the series owners – Alejandro Agag and Rodi Basso, creators of the electric motor racing series Formula E and Extreme E – claim they are in talks with around 70 potential host cities all over the planet. The Saudi Arabian city of Jeddah is being mooted as a possible venue for the inaugural race. Other port venues might include New York, Miami, London, Stockholm, Rotterdam, Budapest, Barcelona, Geneva, Zurich and Dubrovnik. E1 may also share more remote locations with Extreme E , Agag’s off-road electric motor racing series. However, until the prototype proves itself in the water and commercial teams sign up to compete, it’s unlikely any contracts will be signed.

Conceived by Norwegian and Italian boat designers Sophi Horne and Brunello Acampora, RaceBird will ride high out of the water, creating very little wake, even at top speeds. This means pilots will be able to negotiate tight, technical circuits, racing close to one another, without risk of accident. The series organisers envisage “circuits located close to shore in the heart of urban areas”.

“In Monaco, we are doing a feasibility study to have a race in the harbour,” Basso told GQ , fully aware that some of the most expensive yachts on the planet are moored there. “Fifty knots in the harbour! It could be expensive. I need to make sure I have good insurance.”

At the moment organisers suggest the race format will be four boats competing in heats, followed by knock-out rounds leading to a grand finale. For the first few seasons all teams will have to use identical boats, but in future years, they will be allowed to experiment with different technologies within the rules of powerboating’s governing body, the UIM (Union Internationale Motonautique). In this way, the series will eventually be a valuable test-bed for electric vessels of all types, just as Formula 1 has been a test-bed for commercial motor cars.

Basso has worked in motor racing for Ferrari , Red Bull and McLaren, and has consulted for NASA on satellite technology. However, as the world attempts to free itself from the stranglehold of oil and gas, he admits that speedboat racing with fossil fuels will very soon appear pointless.

Image may contain Lighting Musical Instrument Piano and Leisure Activities

Agag was a politician from the late 1980s until the early 2000s when he switched to sport – motor sport and football in particular. A big name in Formula 1 , he later launched Formula E and Extreme E. Like Basso, he sees the absurdity of racing vehicles that burn fossil fuels, and hopes for a future, very soon, when all small boats will be powered by electricity.

“I cannot see a future if they’re not,” he told GQ . “We need to change all mobility to electric. It will take long and it won’t be painless or cheap, but we have to do it.”

Image may contain Spoke Machine Tire Wheel Alloy Wheel Car Wheel and Light

Even much larger vessels such as commercial ships or the vast container ships that roam our oceans will eventually abandon fossil fuels, he believes. “Batteries are OK for light boats that you take out for three or four hours. But the big ships will need a different technology.” It’s most likely, he suggests, they will be powered by hydrogen, perhaps within the next ten or 20 years.

Agag, who lives in London, part-owns three boats himself. Two are small diesel craft on the River Thames, and the third is a 105-metre cargo liner called St. Helena, powered on low-sulphur diesel, which he uses as a floating paddock for Extreme E .

But he knows the days are numbered for his diesel engines. Looking out across Monaco harbour, with its billionaires’ rows of vast, expensive yachts, he shudders to think of the pollution they all cause. “Don’t get me wrong, I love the aesthetic of yachts. It’s a big industry that creates a lot of jobs; it’s an important industry. But sometimes you question whether it makes sense to go bigger and bigger and bigger. The opulence. It’s also very polluting. It has a big carbon footprint and, definitely, it’s an industry that will have to change. That’s what we’re here for.”

Image may contain Vehicle Transportation Aircraft and Airplane

Agag and Basso are also developing an electric leisure speedboat called the SeaBird (based on the design of the RaceBird), which they plan to rent out through a boat-sharing service in the cities where their races take place. It will be part of E1’s legacy, if you will.

Should the boats prove popular, they could also sell multiple SeaBirds to private boat-users, generating a huge revenue stream in the process. Just as Formula 1 racing cars drive sales of sports cars to ordinary drivers, so Agag and Basso hope their racing speedboat will drive sales of their leisure speedboat.

Image may contain Alejandro Agag Human Person Clothing Apparel Lighting Suit Coat Overcoat Jacket and Blazer

Agag even suggests the SeaBird might prove to be an aquatic version of the Tesla . “Tesla has done an incredible job – Elon Musk is a genius – of placing electric cars as something cool, sexy, reliable, good quality. So I hope SeaBird can become a Tesla for the water,” he says, demonstrating his ambitions to shake up the entire boat industry.

And why stop at boats? With Formula E, Extreme E and now E1 under his belt, are there other electric racing series in his sights? “I’m looking into electric planes, but it’s early yet because they don’t fly too long. When the planes are ready we should do aeroplane racing.”

E1 racing: Racebird electric foiling powerboat takes flight

  • Top stories

The hotly anticipated E1 Series of electric powerboat racing took a major step forward this month with the first sea trial of its radical new RaceBird craft.

This all-electric one-design foiling boat took to the River Po near San Nazzaro in April, where it was driven by none other than ex-world champion powerboat racer Luca Ferrari.

He put the lightweight flyer through its paces with a series of straight-line speed trials as well as tight, round-the-buoy manoeuvres to simulate actual racing conditions.

The test team also took the opportunity to experiment with the positioning of the onboard cameras that will supply live feeds to a worldwide television audience.

Propelled by an all-new 150kW Mercury Racing electric outboard motor powered by 37kWh Kreisel batteries, this futuristic single-seat racer has a top speed of around 50 knots.

Weighing a mere 900kg, including its pilot, the carbon-fibre craft flies above the water with only the tips of its foils and the propeller submerged, using state-of-the-art trim and steering technology to keep it aloft.

Top 10 powerboat racing icons that helped make boating what it is today

How donald campbell broke both land and waterspeed records in the same year.

The E1 racing championship is due to kick off next year with as many as 12 teams competing. Each race will consist of three 10-12 minute knock-out rounds with teams having to field two pilots of different genders.

The organisers expect to have around 30 identical RaceBirds ready for the start of the season, guaranteeing close racing between the teams. These will be shipped around the world in containers, initially between venues in North America and Europe, although they hope to expand into Asia as well. London, Monaco, Naples and Barcelona have all been mooted as potential venues.

The futuristic looks of the RaceBird were penned by Norwegian industrial designer Sophi Horne from SeaBird Technologies, supported by Italian naval architect Bruno Acampora and Victory Marine, which is building the boats.

Crucially, the E1 racing series has the backing of the UIM, the governing body of powerboat racing, but Spanish entrepreneur, Alejandro Agag, the man behind the popular Formula E Series of electric racing cars, and former aerospace and F1 engineer, Rodi Basso, are the other key players involved.

The Racebird design has been toned down a little from the futuristic vision first shown back in 2020 . However, with its long bow, angular foils and super-sleek profile, it still looks unlike anything else on the water. Despite its long, slender profile, the LOA is a mere 7m with a beam of 2m (3m with foils).

Although the new E1 racing series is Seabird’s current priority, it also plans to launch a larger leisure version in the future with space for six passengers and a range of 50nm.

Horne hopes to make these available as both private purchases as well as a network of boat-sharing clubs where people can hire them by the hour or day, with a skipper if needed.

The first-ever electric powerboat racing event in the world is getting closer and its organizers are constantly revealing exciting info on the championship to keep us going until next year. The E1 Series announced the first racing team to take part in the inaugural season of the competition.

electric powerboat racing

Venice Racing Team is the name of the recently unveiled Italian entity, which was created with the clear purpose of competing in the UIM E1 World Championship. It is the brainchild of entrepreneur Francesco Pannoli, energy specialist Claudio Iannelli, racing expert Luigi Radice, and motorsport expert Eugenio Razelli.

The team will represent the city of Venice, hoping that this call to action will help protect the lagoon environment and artistic heritage of the iconic “city of water” by encouraging a rapid switch to electric mobility in urban waters. As stated by Pannoli, who is the team principal of the Venice Racing Team, the E1 World Championship represents a revolution in the nautical world, giving racing the responsibility of being the driver of positive change. Taking part in this event is an honor for the team and marks an important moment for Venice, accelerating its transition to sustainable mobility in the water.

The E1 Series will have up to 12 teams competing on the water in several race locations worldwide. Dozens of other prospective teams have been approached so far, from sports such as traditional powerboating, sailing, and even from the automotive world, so organizers will follow with more updates on the lineup.

electric powerboat racing

Pilots involved in the race will have to handle tight and technical circuits at high speeds of up to 50 knots (93 kph/58 mph), behind the wheel of the RaceBird  powerboats.

The  RaceBird  was designed by SeaBird Technologies and Victory Marine and was unveiled in 2020 at the Monaco Yacht Show. Now, its developers have a full-size model of the watercraft, one that weighs 880 lb (400 kg). The electric boat uses hydrofoil technology to fly 1.6 ft (around 0.5 m) above the water, boasting a peak power output of 150 kW. You can watch here a prototype of the boat hitting the water for the first time in Italy earlier this month.

As for the inaugural season of the E1 series, it is scheduled to kick off in early 2023.

Resurrecting Moskvitch Won’t Be Easy for Russia

Renault's relinquished Moscow plant could relaunch a dormant brand, along with promised EVs, but development will be a challenge in uncertain times.

party of moskvitch owners, moscow, 2016

  • Renault has transferred its plant in Moscow and its stake to the government of the city, while also giving up its stake in AvtoVAZ to the NAMI institute.
  • The Moscow city government has revealed a plan to relaunch the Moskvitch brand at the Renault plant in Moscow, located on the former site of the AZLK plant that produced Moskvitch vehicles for decades.
  • The plan faces serious challenges as the country's auto industry has been largely cut off from western European investment and technology.

"The first stage will be the production of internal combustion engined cars, and then potentially electric cars," Moscow mayor Sergei Sobyanin said in a statement.

Sobyanin did not indicate whether the gas-engined models or EVs would be developed within the country or produced under license, raising quite a few questions about the feasibility of the project. The mayor did indicate that the KamAZ truck plant, which produces trucks and buses in Naberezhnye Chelny, several hundred miles east of Moscow, would serve as the main engineering partner for the Moskvitch plant. In addition to heavy trucks, KamAZ produces electric city buses.

moskvitch 2141 prototype

The Moscow-based AZLK plant—for decades one of the main passenger car production factories in the USSR—was known for its Moskvitch sedans and station wagons at home and in many export markets. The plant, located on Volgogradsky Prospekt in Moscow's southeast, had seen some tough times in the 1990s when a five-door hatchback named the Moskvitch 2141 that was launched in the mid 1980s effectively became the last available platform, spawning a number of sedans and coupes built in small numbers. The factory had effectively come to a standstill in early 2000s as the country struggled to recover from the financial crisis of 1998, and was eventually absorbed into Renault's operations years later, producing the inexpensive Logan range of small cars.

"This has been a very unexpected development, first of all, but with the city administration having gotten the plant once again for the first time since the 1990s, something has to be produced there," Yaroslav V., an eastern European auto historian told Autoweek . "The big question is where they're going to get the tooling for gas and electric cars at this point, and almost everything really points to China. The Moskvitch factory would have difficulties getting a whole assembly line from some western automaker, while China has plenty of automakers and EVs in production. So they can sell designs and assembly lines."

"The other option is more AvtoVAZ models under the Moskvitch brand with some exterior differences, but that would probably cause oversupply of current models. That would be a simple solution, and perhaps something that will also end up happening."

Industry observers in Russia have speculated that the plant won't be able to keep Renault production going even if it wanted to, due to the need to source components from Renault, effectively closing the door to existing platforms produced at the plant. Auto industry watchers have also noted that funding for a plant retrofit to restart car production would be difficult in the near term, given that car sales in Russia have fallen over 70% since the start of the war in Ukraine.

azlk museum and plant

"I don't see them doing something quickly with the Moskvitch project, given where car sales and priorities are right now," Yaroslav adds. "But with the upcoming end of imports of some western brands, demand for domestic models will have to return to levels unseen for decades because Russia will now have to build a lot of its own cars instead of importing them. With the current political situation and the pullout of several automakers, the domestic car industry is going to have to grow really fast in the coming years to keep up with demand. But mostly, I believe this will be a boon for Chinese brands that will want to take advantage of export opportunities."

European auto industry observers are also noting that amid the confident announcements from the city government, if bringing back Moskvitch was so easy, why wasn't it done years ago when economic conditions were much more favorable? Now the new owners of the plant face a much bleaker supply chain environment and perhaps tighter budgets, even when it comes to putting internal combustion models into production. The only upside the project faces is the fact that competition from imported models is likely to be much weaker in the coming years, as there won't be as many foreign brands left on the market.

Jay Ramey grew up around very strange European cars, and instead of seeking out something reliable and comfortable for his own personal use he has been drawn to the more adventurous side of the dependability spectrum. Despite being followed around by French cars for the past decade, he has somehow been able to avoid Citroën ownership, judging them too commonplace, and is currently looking at cars from the former Czechoslovakia. Jay has been with Autoweek since 2013.
