Rolex’s Yacht-Master series emerged in the early nineties, touted as a nautically-themed luxury lifestyle offering against the all-out professional tools of the brand’s dive trio.

Although quite clearly cut from the same mold as the Submariner (and there were even rumors it was originally dreamt up back in the eighties as a possible replacement for the legendary Sub), it has always set itself apart with its softer, more graceful lines and choice of materials. The closest you’ll find to the utility of steel here is when it’s being gentrified by the presence of Rolex’s own 18K gold in their Rolesor models or their platinum in the Rolesium versions – a combination that made its debut with the first wave of these Rolex Yachtmaster watches for sale .

Precious metals don’t come cheap, and the YM has consequently not had the same universal mass appeal as others in the Oyster Professional range. It has always purposely avoided going too sporty, aiming the model at a more targeted audience – those who, for example, may own luxury yachts.

Let’s take a look at one of Rolex’s most interesting and beautifully balanced masterpieces, the Yacht-Master in Everose.

Yacht-Master 116655: One of A Kind

In 2015, a new Yachtmaster with many surprises up its sleeve made its grand entrance. The Yacht-Master reference 116655 brought with it several firsts, not just for the Yacht-Master range, but for Rolex itself.  It was the first Rolex for sale to feature the innovative Oysterflex bracelet, the brand’s take on the rubber strap.  It was also the first Yacht-Master to ditch the precious metal bezel for Cerachrom, Rolex’s term for ceramic.  Of course, the bezel is produced in matte black to match the sleek Oysterflex strap.

While their bezels have always featured embossed numerals, as opposed to the engraved ones favored by the rest of the brand’s catalog, the contrast between the high polish of the three-dimensional markings against that gloriously muted, sandblasted ceramic gives an altogether more dramatic effect. This design is echoed on the black dial, replacing what is typically a glossy element on other similarly colored Rolex watches for a matte hue to match the bezel and bracelet.

Juxtaposing against the high-polish and elegantly curved 18k Everose case, Rolex’s own blend of gold and copper with a dash of platinum to seal it all in, it underlines the ref. 116655’s status as the best of both worlds. Dressy enough for the yacht club; sporty enough for the yacht race.

The Oysterflex Bracelet

At the core of the Oysterflex is a blade forged from an alloy of titanium and nickel, molded in a high-performance, hypoallergenic elastomer. It means, not only is the bracelet exceptionally resistant to environmental rigors, but it’s also free to form itself to the shape of the wearer’s wrist while retaining all the strength of any of the brand’s metal bands.

It is an extremely comfortable bracelet, made even more so by the addition of a pair of ‘fins’ underneath that both cushion and support the watch while also providing airflow to cool the wrist on warm days. The bracelet is secured by the same Oysterlock clasp as you’ll find on most Rolex sports models and comes with the 5mm Easylink extension system for a spot of fine-tuning.

The only drawback compared to, say, the traditional Oyster bracelet is obviously in making larger adjustments. There are no links to add or remove, and, unlike other rubber straps, cutting it to size isn’t an option, thanks to the metal core. Rolex offers a choice of bracelet size at the time of purchase, but it does mean you won’t be able to lend your watch to anyone with significantly bigger or smaller wrists than you. Oh well!

The Calibre 3135 Perpetual Movement

Inside the 40mm ref. 116655 is the battle-hardened and utterly reliable Cal. 3135, which remained Rolex’s main engine from 1988 until just recently when it was replaced by its successor – calibre 3235. Performing way beyond the standards set down by the COSC, it’s accurate to within +2/-2 seconds a day.  Cal. 3135 also boasts a Paramagnetic blue Parachrom hairspring and a convenient 48-hour power reserve.  Even if you set your Rolex Yachtmaster down and don’t pick it up until a day or so later, it will continue to read true.

The Next Generation of Yacht Masters: The Rolex 116655 vs. 126655

In 2019, a new collection of regatta timers came to market, replacing the first 6-digit 1166XX generation.  The beloved cal. 3135 retired from the Yacht-Master collection altogether, making way for the new and improved calibre 3235 with a more efficient skeletonized Chronergy escapement and, thus, a longer 70-hour power reserve.  The Everose and Oysterflex Yacht-Master survived the transition, housing the improved movement within the current ref. 126655.  It features a similar design set as ref. 116655, including a 40mm case and the same stunning matte black ceramic bezel.  Also joining the new 40mm lineup were Rolesium ref. 126622 and Everose Rolesor ref. 126621.

Future Classic?

The Yacht-Master ref. 116655 has all the hallmarks of a classic in the making.  It’s a radical departure from the norm, and it debuted several never-before-seen features.  Additionally, Its matte dial with the red text gives it a healthy vintage feel, and its hefty retail price will grant it an invaluable degree of exclusivity.

If we were gamblers, we certainly wouldn’t bet against it becoming a highly sought-after piece in years to come, but that isn’t the best reason to add one to your collection if the budget allows. This is simply one of the most strikingly good-looking and capable watches ever produced by a brand that sets the standard other manufacturers try to live up to. A model welcomed anywhere, whether on deck or on the beach, the Everose gold Yacht-Master 40 is Rolex at their formidable best.

What do Rolex and Haribo have in common?

Not a whole lot…

So how come the name of a candy company has become associated with Rolex?

Well, the answer is quite obvious.

One of Haribo’s most popular candy is gold bears, and these candies are made in several different colors. As a result, they remind a lot about the bezel of the very unique Rolex Yacht-Master 116695SATS, now nicknamed ”Haribo”. Another nickname that is also sometimes used for this model (and some other multi-colored gem-set Rolex watches) is ”Tutti Frutti”.

But for the 116695SATS specifically, the nickname Haribo is what has stuck the most.

The Rolex Yacht-Master 116695SATS is a very interesting timepiece since it is not part of Rolex’s standard collection. You won’t find it on the Rolex website, and therefore, the Rolex Haribo – and many other watches, tend to fly under the radar for most people.

But interestingly enough, that is exactly what Rolex wants. Every year, Rolex discreetly releases a few new ”masterpiece” watches that are not part of the standard collection. What makes these stand out is that they are usually gem-set with lots of gemstones in a unique way. Firstly, Rolex would likely struggle to produce enough of these pieces if they would have been part of the standard collection. Setting the bezel and finding the correct gemstones is a process that can take weeks, so even if Rolex would have wanted to scale top the production of this watch, it wouldn’t be easy.

 In addition, gem-setting is an art, but achieving the level of color perfection of the 116695SATS is even more difficult. Rolex doesn’t just pick any gemstones for its watches. Nor do they take gem-setting lightly.

But most importantly, to maintain the exclusivity of Rolex’s most exclusive watches, the production numbers need to be kept low. This is not an affordable watch, and the clients who decide to spend that type of money want something truly unique that stands out from all others.

Rolex Yacht-Master ”Haribo” 116695SATS

This watch is based on the Rolex Yacht-Master 40 116655 in rose gold. This is interesting because meanwhile, in 2019, Rolex upgraded the Yacht-Master with the new caliber 3235 as well as incorporating the Glidelock system inside the clasp. With that said, It would make sense for Rolex to upgrade the ”Haribo” too.

This may or may happen, but because of the, usually short production periods of its special timepieces, you never know when Rolex will stop or start its production. Regardless, if we would get the Haribo in the new Yacht-Master version, expect it to carry the reference 126695SATS instead.

The Haribo is produced in highly limited numbers and is mostly available to order for special clients. This is a timepiece that you’ll rarely see standing in the shop window at an official Rolex retailer since most of the time, the watch is sold to a client before it is even ordered.

At its core, this watch is identical to the classic 116655, the only difference is the striking gem-set bi-directional bezel that makes it stand out from the ordinary.

Whilst Rolex is perhaps not the brand you’d think of first when it comes to diamonds and gem-setting, Rolex takes it very seriously and has dedicated a whole department to the gem-setting process and tries to highlight it through its special timepieces. The gem-set Haribo bezel of the Yacht-Master works as a testament to Rolex’s know-how and expertise in the art of gem-setting, and with that, they succeed very well.

Achieving a colored gem-set bezel requires careful sorting for the perfect gems.

But it’s not just the fact that it has lots of gems on it that are cut to perfection. The real challenge is sorting the gemstones and finding ones that are the same color. Unlike certain other gem-set watches that Rolex has created, the bezel of the Yacht-Master Harbo isn’t color-coded like a rainbow. Instead, the bezel is identical on each opposite side at 180 degrees. This requires finding gemstones that are identical colors to achieve perfect symmetry and balance. The color and the consistency of this bezel really stands out, which is because the sorting is done by hand. A tedious and time-consuming job indeed, but that is what it takes for absolute perfection.

 If you look closer, you’ll notice a seamless setting, meaning it does not have the ordinary ”holders” which are normally used when setting gemstones. The gems are perfectly aligned and sit against each other with nothing separating them, requiring an extraordinary precision.

The bezel, which certainly is the star of this show is set with 32 sapphires, 1 diamond at 12 o’clock, and 8 tsavorites (An emerald-green variety of grossular garnet). This creates a bezel that stands out from the ordinary, a true piece of craftsmanship that requires incredible expertise. 

What’s more, as if the bezel with a black dial wasn’t unique enough, Rolex has also made another version of this watch with a full paved diamonds dial. Perfect for those who want an even flashier watch. The pave diamond dial version is even rarer and made in even more limited quantities.

Specifications

The 116695SATS features a 40mm 18ct rose gold. It is powered by the Rolex Caliber 3135, but if and when Rolex upgrades the reference to 126695SATS, it will use the caliber 3235.

It is fitted on a black Oysterflex rubber strap with a rose gold clasp. What is so interesting about the Yacht-Master ”Haribo” is that in a sense, it is a bit contradictory. On one hand, you have a seriously sporty timepiece that looks masculine and robust. On the other hand, you have an elegant gem-set bezel, set with extreme delicacy and precision.

In other words, you have a robust sports watch with a bi-directional bezel, set with gems so that now it is not possible to operate it nor read the time. But that is also the charm. Rolex knows that the owners of these watches will not buy them because they will have to rely on them as crucial tools. Instead, they will work as beautiful pieces of art that will be appreciated for their uniqueness and incredible craftsmanship.

It’s very interesting to look closer at Rolex’s most special and limited timepieces. Seeing that they are not part of Rolex’s standard collection, they tend to fly under the radar for most people. It’s not that Rolex tries to hide them, but the brand realizes the importance of exclusivity.

Rolex realizes that for its most luxurious timepieces, it needs to maintain its exclusivity and uniqueness. These individuals don’t want to be one of many, and if Rolex floods the market with these pieces, then they lose a part of their exclusive nature that makes them special in the first place.

All in all, the Rolex Yacht-Master 40 116695SATS ”Haribo” is certainly a watch that will catch people’s attention. But at the same time, it is a timepiece that you’ll unlikely spot out in the wild. The Yacht-Master Haribo is a true work of art, and only when you understand the complexity of the gem-setting of this watch are you able to fully appreciate what it is and what it represents.

We always recommend using Royal Mail Special Delivery and if you’re located within the M25, we do also offer a free, same-day collection service for high-value watches. The bi-directional rotating bezel is set with 38 sapphires (blue, orange, yellow, and pink), 8 tsavorites (the green gems), and 1 diamond at 12 o’clock. The uniformity of the gems in respective color and shape is fantastic.

Our Warranties

All watches come with a Time 4 Diamonds DMCC Ltd 12 month warranty (the ‘Warranty’) from the date you receive the watch. This Warranty protects your watch against manufacturing and mechanical faults subject to the conditions within this clause

Any watches that you have asked to be customised will automatically lose their manufacturer’s warranty as soon as customisation begins on the watch. Any warranty offered will therefore be with Time 4 Diamonds directly for a period of 12 months unless otherwise stated.

Warranty covers the mechanical parts of the watch and excludes damage by any form of water damage or misuse of the watch in any way. In the event your watch has been damaged by water, Time4Diamonds will offer to repair the watch at your expense if possible. It will also be your responsibility to deliver the watch to us in a timely manner to avoid further damage to the watch. We do not take any responsibility for the watch until such point as it is back in the Time4Diamonds office.

If the period of time for either repair/replacing exceeds 3 months, the situation will be reviewed and any further decisions or actions will be made at our discretion

Gem-Set Rolex Yacht-Master Watches

When Rolex released the Yacht-Master in 1992, it was one of the brand’s most luxurious sports models from the get-go. Crafted almost entirely in 18k yellow gold, this was a solid hunk of precious metal that you could comfortably wear while sailing the seas on your private yacht. Over the years, Rolex has greatly expanded the Yacht-Master lineup with additional sizes, materials, and dials. Plus, Rolex chose the Yacht-Master to debut its newest bracelet style in 2015 by pairing the nautical watch with the black rubber Oysterflex bracelet. In addition to all the great variety, there are also a handful of lavish gem-set Rolex Yacht-Master watches on offer; some in the regular production catalog and some hidden from the public as “off-catalog” models. When you say “Yacht-Master” to the modern Rolex buyer, they likely picture the Everose gold version with a black Cerachrom ceramic bezel and black Oysterflex bracelet that entered the scene in 2015. With its sporty black accents and precious metal case, the Everose Yacht-Master has become the flagship model of the entire collection. 

Rolex not only offers the Everose Yacht-Master in two sizes, but buyers can also choose between the standard black dial or a dazzling diamond-paved dial. The current production Yacht-Master 40 with a diamond pavé dial is the ref. 126655-0005, while the smaller 37mm version is the ref. 268655-0019.

Rolex Yacht-Master “Tutti Frutti”

Launched in 2017, the Yacht-Master ref. 116695 SATS has been given the nickname “Tutti Frutti,” and one look at its Skittles-themed bezel and it’s not hard to see why. The rainbow-like bezel that sits on top of the 40mm Everose case is set with 32 sapphires, eight tsavorites, and a single triangular diamond at 12 o’clock. Except for the diamond, pink, yellow, blue, orange, and green are the colors of the precious gemstones, laid in a repetitive pattern. 

Dial choices include the customary black version, which matches the black Oysterflex perfectly. However, if you really want to lean into the opulence of it all , Rolex also made a Yacht-Master “Tutti Frutti” watch with a full diamond paved dial. 

Rolex Yacht-Master 42 with a Baguette Diamond Bezel

In 2019, Rolex added the biggest model to the collection with the introduction of the Yacht-Master 42. The watch sports a 42mm white gold case and is fitted with a black Oysterflex bracelet. In addition to the standard option furnished with a black Cerachrom ceramic bezel, Rolex also added a gem-set variation (around 2021) in the form of the Yacht-Master 42 ref. 226679TBR.

The diamond Rolex Yacht-Master 42 ref. 226679TBR is one of the ultra-secretive “off-catalog” models that are only accessible to select Rolex customers. The watch features trapeze-cut diamonds on the bezel and brilliant-cut diamonds set into the lugs. What’s more, if that isn’t enough gemstones for you, Rolex also makes a full diamond paved dial version. 

Rolex Yacht-Master “Cotton Candy”

In 2022, Rolex announced the latest gem-set Yacht-Master to join the company’s lineup. It was the Yacht-Master ref. 126679 SABR with a 40mm white gold case embellished with diamonds and colorful sapphires. The rotating bezel is home to a group of five trapeze-cut gemstones (pink sapphire, light blue sapphire, diamond, purple sapphire, and dark blue sapphires) repeated eight times in sequence and accompanied by a triangular diamond at 12 o’clock. The case is also set with 46 brilliant-cut diamonds, spanning from the lugs to the crown guard.

According to Rolex, the watch was inspired by the aurora borealis and the glow of dawn, yet collectors have nicknamed it the Yacht-Master “Cotton Candy.” Similar to the other examples we’ve laid out there, Rolex offers the Yacht-Master 40 ref. 126679 SABR with either a black dial or a full diamond paved dial.

Whether or not these gem-set Rolex Yacht-Master watches are to your taste, what remains true is their value and collectibility in the market. Rolex produces these types of high-jewelry sports watches in very low quantities, which in turn makes them even more appealing to Rolex collectors.
