Il Yacht-Master 42 226659 presenta una cassa da 42 mm in oro bianco 18 carati e una lunetta girevole bidirezionale in ceramica nera Cerachrom con numeri e graduazioni in rilievo. Calibro Rolex Yacht-Master 3235

Il calibro Rolex 3235 è un movimento meccanico automatico di alta precisione sviluppato e prodotto internamente da Rolex. Questo movimento è stato introdotto nel 2015 e ha gradualmente sostituito il precedente calibro 3135 in diversi modelli di orologi Rolex, incluso il Yacht-Master .

Il calibro 3235 è caratterizzato da numerosi miglioramenti rispetto al suo predecessore, tra cui:

(NEWS) Monaco Legend Group ed il Rolex Yacht-Master Dix Millionieme Chronometre

Il rolex yacht-master dix millionieme chronometre.

L’esemplare di Yacht-Master che andrà all’asta i prossimi 22 e 23 aprile a Monaco è uno dei Rolex contemporanei più interessanti ed è un esemplare unico , realizzato negli anni novanta per celebrare il decimilionesimo orologio Rolex dotato del Certificato di Cronometro.

Curiosamente, non è un Daytona, un Submariner o un Day-Date ma UN Rolex Yacht-Master che arricchisce la nostra guida come nessun altro modello poteva mai fare. Potremmo anche definirlo lo Yacht-Master Heiniger ma, quanto meno, occorrerebbe una spiegazione.

La famiglia Heiniger e Rolex

Il modello che vedete nelle foto è stato realizzato durante la gestione del marchio da parte della famiglia Heiniger e comprende un periodo che va dalla presidenza del padre Andre, iniziata nel 1964, per proseguire con quella del figlio Patrick a partire dal 1992.

Questo speciale, ed unico, Yacht-Master in platino è un prototipo realizzato per celebrare questo traguardo ed è dotato di alcune caratteristiche che fanno parte del pedigree dei modelli speciali costruiti da Rolex, in cui ricorre l’adozione di diamanti e zaffiri taglio baguette al posto degli indici con l’aggiunta della dicitura “DIX MILLIONIEME CHRONOMETRE” sia sul quadrante che sulla massa oscillante del calibro 3135.

La famiglia Heiniger aveva evidentemente un debole per il platino ; a loro si deve la creazione di tre Daytona speciali in platino e, analogamente, si suppone che la creazione del Daytona 116598 SACO, meglio conosciuto come Leopard, ne abbiamo parlato nella nostra guida sul Daytona , sia da ascrivere all’eclettismo della famiglia ed, in questo caso particolare, sia stata Nina Stevens, al tempo fidanzata di Patrick Heiniger, ad ispirare questa creazione.

Il Rolex Yacht-Master Heiniger non è però un oggetto da museo dell’orologeria e da museo  Rolex in questo caso; sarà infatti messo all’incanto durante l’asta tematica organizzata da Monaco Legends Group, casa d’aste che ha tra le sue fila l’esperto mondiale di orologeria vintage Davide Parmegiani , la penultima settimana di questo mese, i giorni 22 e 23 aprile.

Data l’importanza dell’orologio e la sua unicità, ci si attende una gara tra i più grandi collezionisti al mondo per entrarne in possesso. La base di partenza? E’ stimata in una forbice tra uno e due milioni di Euro , molto ampia considerando che è comprensibilmente difficile dare una previsione.

Le origini del Rolex Yacht-Master

Le fonti ufficiali circa la nascita del Rolex Yacht Master sono piuttosto scarse. Il brevetto del nome Yacht Master fu depositato nel 1950 e, secondo fonti non ufficiali, tradiva la volontà del marchio di creare qualcosa di nuovo nell’offerta capitalizzando il successo del Submariner, ma cosa volesse effettivamente proporre il marchio non era chiaro e ciò può in parte giustificare l’enorme lasso di tempo tra brevetto e lancio del primo modello. Qual è la fonte di ispirazione della collezione? Il marchio cita a più riprese eventi che spaziano dalle imprese più sfidanti negli oceani alle attuali regate per professionisti.

Tra le prime cita l’impresa di Sir Robin Knox-Johnston , vincitore della prima circumnavigazione in solitaria del mondo, la Sunday Times Golden Globe Race del 1969 oppure l’impresa portata a termine da Sir Francis Chichester, che ha circumnavigato il globo da ovest ad est, impiegando nove mesi ed un giorno tra il 1966 ed il 1977 a bordo del suo Gipsy Moth IV.

Chichester indossava un Rolex Oyster Perpetual Cronometro durante il suo viaggio ponendo le basi, anche in tale ambito, per la proverbiale robustezza di un orologio Rolex in condizioni proibitive su terra, mare, aria.

Il primo Yacht Master

Il primo Rolex Yacht Master è targato 1992 con referenza a cinque cifre 16628 e rappresenta il secondo vero nuovo orologio Rolex in ordine di tempo seguendo il più recente Rolex Sky-Dweller.

La storia di questa collezione, strettamente legata oggi al mondo dello Yachting, ha seguito un’evoluzione curiosa se confrontata con altre collezione.

Dotato di cassa e bracciale in oro giallo 18 carati ed un inusuale quadrante bianco , montava il movimento 3135 (quindi la penultima generazione dei calibri automatici solo tempo) e non si può non negare che rappresentasse, come tuttora appare, una elaborazione dei concetti estetici espressi dal Submariner sebbene l’evoluzione dalla registrazione del nome alla prima edizione è piuttosto travagliata e piena di punti interrogativi.

E’ davvero stato questo il primo Yacht Master? Dal punto di vista commerciale è il primo capitolo della storia, non il primo in assoluto a portare questo nome. Il nome Yacht Master è apparso per la prima volta su un orologio realizzato tra il 1967 ed il 1969 quando Rolex ha prodotto due prototipi su base Daytona, cui ha aumentato il diametro cassa fino a 39,5 mm. Di questo orologio si conoscono al momento due soli esemplari: uno appartiene al collezionista John Goldberger, l’altro ad Eric Clapton.

Rolex Yacht Master 40 e 37 mm

La gamma più nota, il “bread and butter”, è la variante con bracciale. Ha subito varie evoluzioni fino a quella che vedete in foto, uno degli esempi dello Yacht Master in acciaio e metallo prezioso. Con l’arrivo di Jean-Frèdèric Dufour al timone della marca, Rolex ha ridato energia ad una collezione, che include i modelli da 40 e 37 mm, che non ha mai (ingiustamente) brillato tra le scelte degli appassionati. Daytona , Submariner, GMT Master 2 sono di gran lunga più ambiti sebbene lo Yacht Master in questa configurazione abbia visto il suo apprezzamento crescere .

Il percorso di rinnovamento complessivo di Yacht Master è iniziato con la collezione Rolex Yacht Master 2 116680 del 2007 , un orologio dotato di una complicazione dedicata ai professionisti della vela che dà prova, insieme al più recente Rolex Sky-Dweller, delle capacità degli ingegneri Rolex di progettare orologi complicati.

Rolesor e Rolesium.

L’attuale collezione Yacht Master con bracciale prevede una gamma completamente rivista , che in questa configurazione prevede sette modelli: quattro da 40 mm e tre da 37 mm. Tutti sono disponibili esclusivamente in acciaio e metallo pregiato; alcuni sono in Rolesium (acciaio e platino) altri in Rolesor (acciaio e oro) come, ad esempio, il modello Rolex Yacht Master 40mm in acciaio e oro Everose di queste foto, disponibile anche con quadrante nero e taglia da 37 mm.

Analizziamo in particolare il Rolex Yacht Master 40 in Acciaio e Oro Everose : combina acciaio 904L ed oro rosa Everose, la declinazione Rolex dell’oro rosa che eleva la formula di base di oro giallo 18 carati, intervenendo sul legame con argento e rame sì da realizzare, in un modo non meglio specificato dal marchio per comprensibili ragioni di proprietà intellettuale, una lega in grado di offrire lucentezza, tono e resistenza all’usura superiori alla media.

La lunetta dello Yacht Master

Una caratteristica che rende unico lo Yacht Master, se si esclude la versione 2, è la costruzione della lunetta sia per finitura che per funzionalità; indici e numeri sono rialzati rispetto alla base a finitura sabbiata e costituiscono un anello d’oro in un pezzo unico (è in platino sui modelli Rolesium) e sono lucidati a specchio. L’alternanza di superfici lucide e spazzolate, prosegue sul bracciale Oyster e sui fianchi della cassa, anse incluse.

Tra i professionali, il modello Yacht Master è unanimemente considerato una variante più lussuosa del Submariner , di transizione tra modelli sportivi e classici con cassa in oro, come evidenziato dalla curvatura dolce delle anse e dal fianco della cassa che, ad un occhio attento, rendono lo Yacht Master tanto più lussuoso (e più vicino per design ai modelli a quattro e cinque cifre del Submariner) quanto meno professionale di altri modelli della stessa macro categoria, come confermano funzioni e specifiche. La lunetta è graduata come su un diver ma è bidirezionale e l’impermeabilità è garantita solo fino a 100 metri .

In termini di offerta, la differenza tra lo Yacht Master attuale e le prime referenze quali, ad esempio, i Rolex 69623 o Rolex 169622, è nella scelta delle opzioni: il quadrante blu è ora associato solo al modello in Rolesium , mentre la versione in Rolesor è disponibile sia con quadrante color cioccolato che nero , entrambi perfettamente coordinati ai toni di cassa e bracciale secondo noi.

Il calibro 3235

Dal 2019 il Rolex Yacht Master monta il calibro Rolex solo tempo nella sua più recente evoluzione, il 3235 . Tutti i modelli sono quindi in grado di marciare per almeno 70 ore a piena carica.

Ricordiamo che l’orologio è Cronometro Superlativo secondo gli standard Rolex sull’orologio con movimento incassato, come previsto ormai su tutti gli orologi del marchio.

Il calibro 2236

I modelli da 37 mm montano, forse pochi lo sanno, un calibro diverso dal 3235; è il più piccolo calibro 2236, che offre specifiche tecniche piuttosto differenti dal fratello maggiore .

La principale differenza tra questo movimento (che viene montato anche sulla versione Lady del Datejust) e gli altri più noti è l’assenza della spirale Parachrom Blue sostituita dalla spirale Siloxy con curva terminale piatta, introdotta da Rolex nel 2014.

Rolex Yacht Master Oysterflex

Correva l’anno 2015 ed esisteva ancora la fiera di Basilea quando Rolex presentò una grande novità, inedita per un marchio tanto conservativo. A Baselworld 2015, il marchio presentò il primo Yacht Master con cinturino in Oysterflex , il cinturino in gomma (con anima in lega di nickel e titanio) brevettato da Rolex, accoppiato alla cassa rigorosamente in oro, nelle dimensioni di 40 mm e 37 mm. Osservando il primo modello della sua storia, Yacht Master Oysterflex rappresenta forse il perfetto erede dello Yacht Master lanciato nel 1992.

La cassa su queste versioni è esclusivamente in oro come anticipato; sui primi due modelli della gamma solo in oro rosa Everose. Probabilmente questa nuova generazione di orologi rappresenta al meglio lo spirito della collezione ; professionale nell’aspetto ma più lussuoso, esaltazione della geometria della carrure Yacht Master grazie all’adozione di metalli preziosi.

Tra le novità assolute, Yacht Master Oysterflex ha introdotto la prima lunetta in ceramica opaca ; è la stessa che trovate su un Rolesor o Rolesium ma il disco è in questo caso un pezzo unico in ceramica nera opaca.

Come per i modelli originali, le versioni da 40 e da 37 mm di diametro cassa montano il calibro 3235 e 2236 rispettivamente . La nuova proposta ha riscosso un successo così rapido che a Ginevra hanno esteso rapidamente la gamma, offrendo la cassa anche nella più generosa dimensione di 42 mm (crediamo tuttavia che il modello da 40 sia insuperabile per proporzioni).

Attualmente la collezione da 42 mm è disponibile in oro giallo o bianco , mentre le due varianti da 40 mm e 37 mm sono acquistabili solo con cassa in oro rosa Everose. C’è da giurare che Rolex estenda ulteriormente la gamma Oysterflex adottando nuovi materiali per la cassa.

Nel 2020, lo skipper di Ineos Britannia Ben Ainslie è stato fotografato mentre indossava uno Yacht Master 42 in titanio durante una sessione di allenamento. Dopo la presentazione del Rolex Deepsea Challenge Titanio RLX , è perciò verosimile che questo modello si trasformi presto da prototipo a realtà.

Non è tutto però; Rolex non sempre annuncia i suoi nuovi modelli. Ecco così che, sul sito ufficiale, appare una referenza alquanto nascosta e mai davvero comunicata dalla marca: è il Rolex Yacht Master 42 Occhio di Falco o Yacht Master Falcon’s Eye se preferite, che vedete nella foto sopra.

Rolex Yacht Master RLX Titanio

Nella foto sopra, è stato colto Ben Ainslie, in allenamento, con al polso un particolare modello di Yacht Master con cassa in titanio. Alla edizione 2023 di Watches and Wonders, Rolex ha presentato la versione di produzione, il modello Yacht Master RLX Titanium referenza 226627 . Rispetto al prototipo indossato dal noto skipper inglese, il modello di normale produzione presenta anche il bracciale in titanio, come era prevedibile, visto che il bracciale Oysterflex è riservato ai modelli Rolex in metalli preziosi.

La cassa è realizzata in RLX Titanium , che Rolex realizza a partire da titanio Grado 5, su cui il marchio ha lavorato per riprodurre il più possibile la stessa alternanza di finiture lucide e spazzolate che si ritrovano sui modelli professionali in acciaio, sebbene il colore di cassa e bracciale sia evidentemente più scuro, e di colore grigio come c’è da aspettarsi sugli orologi costruiti in titanio. Come gli altri modelli della collezione Yacht Master, è garantito impermeabile fino a 100 metri.

Rolex Yacht Master Rainbow

Il modello Rolex Yacht Master Rainbow 116695 SATS fu presentato nel 2017 durante la fiera di Basilea. Come nel caso del Daytona Rainbow , questo modello particolare mostra la volontà di Rolex di declinare i suoi modelli sportivi in varianti particolarmente lussuose, facendo largo uso di pietre preziose incastonate sulla lunetta.

Questi modelli sono diventati particolarmente ricercati dai grandi collezionisti di Rolex, non solo in mercati, quali quelli dell’est o del mondo arabo, in cui tradizionalmente questi particolari modelli sono acquistati. I modelli Rainbow hanno iniziato a raccogliere ampio consenso a livello globale per l’elevata qualità della realizzazione e le quotazioni in continua crescita.

Sulla lunetta bidirezionale di uno Yacht Master Rainbow sono inseriti zaffiri di colore blu, arancio, giallo e rosa . Ogni quartetto di zaffiri, per un totale di 32, è intervallato da uno tsavorite verde (otto in totale). L’ultimo zaffiro rosa e l’ultimo tsavorite verde ad ore dodici sono intervallati da un diamante di forma triangolare. Il livello di finitura è superlativo come eccezionalmente rigoroso è il processo per la selezione delle pietre preziose da incastonare sulla lunetta.

Un’altra particolarità risiede nel quadrante , la cui finitura è lucida se comparata con il quadrante nero opaco dell’equivalente modello in oro rosa ordinario da 40 mm. All’interno batte il calibro Rolex 3135. Questo specifico  modello non è oggi più a catalogo ma quando fu presentato, il modello 116695 SATS aveva un prezzo di listino di circa 63.000 Euro.

Rolex Yacht Master 2

Rolex è una manifattura in grado di realizzare orologi complicati; è un aspetto spesso trascurato . Va sempre ricordato che, nella stessa fascia di prezzo di modelli più ambiti quali i Daytona, il marchio offre la scelta di almeno due complicazioni e quella riservata allo Yacht Master 2 ne fa uno strumento per le regate.

Se il modello solo tempo ha una vocazione non professionale, la destinazione d’uso dello Yacht Master 2 è invece chiara e ben definita; è un orologio strumento a tutti gli effetti.

Il Rolex complicato: dallo Sky-Dweller allo Yacht Master 2.

Il Rolex Yacht Master 2 è grande, è un regatta timer (non tutti lo comprendono, pochi hanno davvero necessità di usarlo) e se cerchi un Rolex complicato rivolgerai presumibilmente le tue attenzioni al più trasversale Rolex Sky–Dweller. Il Rolex Yacht–Master 2 nasce dall’idea di dotare gli skipper professionisti di uno strumento da polso capace di misurare con precisione il count-down allo start di una regata.

Il legame tra Rolex ed il mare è longevo: il suo nome è associato da molti anni a diverse categorie di competizione a vela quali la classe Farr 40 o la Sidney–Hobart . Nella immagine sottostante abbiamo riportato una mappa delle attuali partnership.

I 5 o 10 minuti (dipende dalla tipologia di match race) prima della partenza di un regata sono minuti ad alta adrenalina per uno skipper ed il suo equipaggio; la gestione dell’ultimo minuto può essere decisivo per la vittoria finale. La capacità di avere quindi una misurazione dedicata ed estremamente precisa è perciò fondamentale.

La maggior parte degli orologi Regatta presenti sul mercato (rappresentano una nicchia che sta crescendo) ha un settore sul quadrante all’interno del quale scorre un disco a più colori. Il Rolex Yacht–Master II ha invece un contatore dedicato sul quadrante, coassiale alla lunetta, dotato di una scala graduata da 0 a 10 minuti ed una vistosa sfera a freccia.

La funzione Count-down: come si attiva.

La regolazione del timer è estremamente semplice e si fa usando lunetta, corona e pulsante ad ore 4 in questa sequenza. La prima operazione da fare è quella di ruotare la lunetta in senso antiorario , in modo da attivare il sistema di regolazione della piccola sfera del countdown.

La lunetta si bloccherà automaticamente dopo una rotazione di 90° ovvero quando la scritta “Yacht-Master II” sarà disposta sul lato destro (l’asse di rotazione della corona taglia idealmente a metà la scritta). Successivamente occorre premere il tasto ad ore 4. La corona viene poi svitata fino a metterla in posizione 1 : da questo momento in poi la regolazione della scala dei 10 minuti (saltanti) viene gestita, a scatti interi di un minuto, attraverso la rotazione in senso orario della corona.

Dopo aver fermato la sfera dei minuti sul valore desiderato, basta ruotare in senso orario la lunetta fino allo scatto che la blocca nella posizione in cui la scritta Yacht Master 2 è nuovamente allineata in basso (-90°, nella sua posizione originale).

Alla fine di questa rotazione le due scale dei minuti, su lunetta e quadrante rispettivamente, sono allineate. Riavvitando completamente la corona di carica si può far partire il conto alla rovescia (pulsante al 2): la sfera rossa al centro parte ed il countdown dei minuti si attiva simultaneamente .

Durante il conto alla rovescia, la sfera può essere fermata mediante il pulsante ad ore 2 oppure il conto alla rovescia fermato ed azzerato mediante il pulsante al 4 (Flyback). Nel secondo caso il conto alla rovescia riparte dalla posizione originale. A countdown ultimato, la lancetta dei minuti si arresta, quella dei secondi continua invece indefinitamente. Il Rolex Yacht–Master II è a tutti gli effetti un cronografo con funzione Flyback .

Il Rolex Yacht Master 2 del 2017 referenza 116680 ha sostituito la precedente referenza introducendo una serie di aggiornamenti; la nuova versione guadagna le lancette Mercedes allineandosi così al family feeling degli altri Oyster professionali quali il Submariner ed ha nuovi indici applicati al 12 ed al 6 (a freccia e rettangolare rispettivamente) che sostituiscono i più anonimi indici quadrati della versione originale.

La lunetta Ring Command è integrata con il calibro ed è parte attiva dell’esperienza di utilizzo. Il livello di complicazione e di perfezione richiesti al meccanismo (scatti rapidi, nessun gioco) sono più sfidanti che in qualsiasi altro Rolex e lo rendono estremamente attraente.

Contemporaneamente, come è nella tradizione Rolex, la complicazione è nascosta da un’estetica semplificata , sebbene il quadrante sia comunque più complesso ed affollato rispetto agli standard cui Rolex ci ha abituato ed è uno dei motivi che non fanno di uno Rolex Yacht Master 2 la prima scelta.

Wherever there are great cocktail recipes, there are equally fabulous mocktail recipes for those of us who enjoy all the style and taste of cocktails without liquor. In this post, we reveal the best recipe for the Virgin Moscow Mule on the internet! Let's get started!

Introduction

A cocktail is essentially a blend of two or more ingredients of which at least one is alcoholic. As of late, cocktails are getting more inventive with upwards of four and five ingredients.

The Moscow Mule keeps it classically simple with only three ingredients that most of us already have at home. Vodka, ginger beer, and lime juice.

The intense burn of the ginger beer blended with the refreshing sourness of lime juice delights the palate and warms you right up from the first sip.

There are a multitude of practical reasons for choosing a mocktail over a cocktail.

This could include health concerns and diet practices. Or, maybe you're the designated driver and don't want to miss out on a fun night with your social group.

Whatever the reason, mocktails make sure no one is left out.

Most will say that a mocktail is simply a recipe for any cocktail sans the alcoholic ingredient(s), but we're going to show you fantastic ways to enjoy a Virgin Moscow Mule without sacrificing flavor or taste.

Ingredients:

• Sparkling Water 
• Fresh limes 
• Ginger beer 
• Simple syrup

Instructions:

• You can either muddle a couple of fresh limes or use freshly squeezed lime juice. We won't tell if you decide to do both ;)
• Next, combine your favorite sparkling water and a splash of ginger beer
• Add a serving of simple syrup (1 part water, 1 part sugar)
• Stir. If you have a shaker on hand, you can also shake the combined ingredients together, but be cautious when pouring as the turbulence may have created a little extra fizz from the sparkling water.
• Pour over ice

With this excellent non-alcoholic version of the Moscow Mule, you can have guilt-free seconds or even thirds!

Health Benefits

Typically, in every 6 oz serving of the traditional Moscow Mule cocktail there are approximately 180 to 200 calories.

One fantastic upside of making a Moscow Mule mocktail is that with the extraction of vodka (say 1.5 oz) you can eliminate around 96 calories, meaning that a typical 6 oz serving is approximately 100 calories or less!

Layers of Flavors

Now that we've laid the foundations, it's time to explore the variations and wonderful layers we can add to perfect our Virgin Moscow Mule.  With these alterations, your mocktails are sure to be enjoyed by all!

In addition to following the preparation of the basic recipe noted above, we suggest adding a few slices of fresh ginger to the mix.

To fully extract the flavors of the ginger, consider muddling it with your limes. Be careful to strain afterward, unless you want to be sucking up bits of ginger through your straw and set your mouth ablaze!

Coupled with the ginger beer, this is sure to amplify the smoldering tones of the original cocktail's taste.

Be sure to use ginger beer and not ginger ale. Most commercially sold ginger beer, though fermented, is alcohol-free. It differs from ginger ale in the way it is manufactured. The intensity of ginger essence in ginger ale isn’t comparable to that of the essence in ginger beer.

So, if you decide to replace ginger beer with ginger ale, you’ll be disappointed at the silenced flavors of ginger in your drink. Essentially, what you’d be drinking wouldn’t be a Moscow Mule at all.

Take it from us, use ginger beer!

If you would rather direct your variations or additions towards the sweet and fruity citrus flavors of your Virgin Mule, you can switch out the simple syrup for a fruit-flavored syrup.

Use a lime-flavored syrup if you would like to stay true to the original characteristics of the classic Moscow Mule.

If you're looking to put a spin on your virgin mule, don't be afraid to try any berry-flavored syrup for an extra layer of fruity goodness.

Sugar-Free Options

Not everyone is a fan of sugar and all things sweet. With this modification, the recipe can accommodate those of us who are patrolling our sugar intake due to dieting and/or health concerns.

More specifically, if you're counting calories or looking to steer clear of sugar all together, you can modify the Virgin Mule recipe by using sugar-free syrup. 

With 8 grams of sugar in one tablespoon of conventional syrup, the sugar-free option is a great way to go. A couple of dollops of the sugar-free syrup is a guilt-free way to enjoy the sweetness of this mocktail without the guilt.

Depending on your location and accessibility, you may or may not find brands of sugar-free syrup.  All the merrier if you can!

If you can’t find sugar-free syrup, another option is to use flavored sparkling water to add some additional flavour to your mocktail.  Some brands of flavored sparkling water are sold in tasty flavors with no sugar, no sweeteners, and no calories. Furthermore, the carbonation in sparkling water will augment the invigorating fizz of the ginger beer.  Win-win-win!

Serving Time

Just because we've decided to forego the alcohol component doesn't mean we're also forsaking presentation. We 're all about balance in life as well as in mocktails. So, if one component of the drink has been removed, another must be added!

And what better place to embellish then in the presentation?

It's no secret that the Moscow Mule is served in a copper mug . There are a variety of reasons why, and one of them is that copper is trusted to maintain a cooler temperature. In addition, the copper adds a "zing" to the flavor of the cocktail with each sip.

Whatever the reason, we can't deny that a Moscow Mule served in a copper mug just looks and feels right. The same is to be said for a Virgin Mule.

Besides, if we’re talking about looks, no one has to know you’re drinking a mocktail if you don’t want them to. The copper mug will keep your secret!

In lieu of serving your Virgin Mule in a copper mug, you can serve it in any bar glass. With so many types and shapes of cocktail glasses, there really is no reason why you couldn't enjoy your mocktail in a highball, an old fashion glass, or even a martini glass.

Whatever you have on hand should work just fine!

Garnish Like a Pro

Add a lime wedge to the rim and voila!

Want to take things up a notch? Drag the lime wedge along the rim of your glass, allowing the citrus to coat the edge. Turn your glass upside down into a plate of salt or sugar.

Extra points for presentation and added flavor with every sip!

For herb garnishes, clap your choice of herbs between your hands to bruise it lightly and release its essential oils and aroma.  Mint works great!

And here's an extra tip. If you have them, sprinkle a few pomegranate seeds on the surface of your drink! However, be careful if drinking with a straw as those little seeds will get sucked right up! It’s also a beautiful addition to your Virgin Mule, as you can see in the photo below.

Experienced european owners brought together a top team of Dubois, Fitzroy and Tessier to produce their dream yacht: sleek, sophisticated and impressive under sail.

The push for a single level between bridge, saloon and cockpit, combined with ultra-sleek aesthetics, nudged the Dubois design team into new territory. “To get good visibility from the helmstations we had to work hard to lower the accommodation as much as possible, while keeping an open feeling” adds McKeon.

The interior, styled and drawn by Remi Tessier , features a combination of bleached timbers and white leather which results in clean modern lines and provides bright comfortable living areas.

Fitzroy Yachts Zefira

The sea trial was pubblished on Superyacht 31 – spring 2012

Zefira S/Y is one of those few yachts that became an attraction for yacht enthusiasts and professionals  well before she hit the water.

This yacht was designed and built with the experience and passion for sailing boats her owners demonstrated from the start as well as a naval engineering and a project design team from  Ed Dubois studio for the exterior, while Remi Tessier was responsible for all the interiors. Zefira was built in a yard which enjoys a  worldwide  reputation for the construction of large sailing yachts.

With such an opening introduction one can expect nothing less than something absolutely extraordinary, where the term used must be read in its best meaning to underscore something that has really nothing of the ordinary. We had the pleasure of talking with the owners who are currently sailing on their yacht after they had  carried out important work in the design phase with the project team to define specific guidelines and details.

Beyond the highly involving dialogue which ensued with flowing examples  of their own sailing experience and passion, we managed to grasp and better understand the idea behind the project which began with a seven metre sloop and  gradually developed in the course of the following 40 years  of which  many were spent at  sea. Putting words to emotion and feelings is never easy to do and  more so when they are other people’s. In this case however everything was a lot easier for us   thanks to our interviewee’s eloquent communicative capability.

The first point our attention was brought to was that Zefira is the largest sailing y

acht ever designed by Dubois with no fly bridge and built by Fitzroy Yachts in New Zealand.  This may strike our readers as a mere detail, but it is in fact one of the principal fundamentals outlining this project because it translates into flowing external lines and a unique profile when observed sideways on.

The choice  of doing without a fly bridge is somewhat unusual since up until  recently a “fly” had been widely accepted as  a run of the mill thing to have on a sailing yacht beyond a given size, but which nevertheless, Zefira is proud to do without giving cause for, among others ,  the following comment volunteered by some of the designers not involved in the project: “The world of sailing now stands  divided between before Zefira and after Zefira”.

Naturally enough this comment in particular is aimed at the yachts’ profile, which brings to a standstill what had become a consolidated practice on yachts this size. Aesthetics is principally  why the owners decided to do without the fly option as well as for practical reasons  they eloquently highlighted: without one  on a  50 metre sailing boat  there’s a complete total view of both what lies ahead up to the horizon and of the sail plan.

Moreover using a higher windswept and sun scorched horizontal plane rather than the main deck itself is by its very nature something destined to be exploited only sporadically and quite correctly in their opinion doesn’t justify having one.

The thought behind the whole project as the requests submitted to both designers and yard indicated,  were to enjoy a pure thorough bred for its performing lines and technical contents, capable of offering the sort of space and commodities expected when cruising extensively in all weather conditions. At a first glance the goal seems to have been easily achieved, but if  we then go into an in-depth analysis, the comments volunteered by project designers earlier seems surely appropriate. The husband and wife team (the owners) followed up on construction work from the initial stages to completion, working through the more important phases in close contact with the professional teams involved.

According to the owners the best part was witnessing the step by step progress of such an enterprise. We can understand the reasons why and genuinely  hope that in  the future such desire will generate the construction of other such extraordinary ships.

Several International prizes for design and technical contents have been awarded to Zefira. Dubois Naval Architects’ studio is proud of the recognitions bestowed since this is the largest sailing yacht project without a “fly” they’ve ever made so far and also for the passion and creativity expressed time and time again by the owners who incidentally had been the previous owners of another Dubois  project built by Alloy Yachts: Kokomo of London (now Nubero Blau). The challenge taken on by the studio was one that meant blending the huge experience acquired by the owners to innovative aesthetics, with a hull capable of delivering the sea-keeping qualities and performance requested.

The owners wished for a boat that could be another home from home: spacious, with a project design that looked ahead into the future. For this reason the design team was invited by the owners to pay them a visit and to take a look at their house to better understand what they wanted.

The choice of the yard was principally dictated by delivery times even if Fitzroy Yachts had been chosen also in function of preceding work carried out from Dubois projects.

Among some of the clever solutions highlighted by the owners in the course of our conversation we wish to mention the ease in steering they experienced and handling the yacht, of course aided by electronics and important data communication systems capable of monitoring and performing many of the required manoeuvres without hindering visibility.

The rig which is capable of carrying up to 3,000 square metres of canvass is per se a very interesting technical achievement inasmuch as it sports a 63.50 metre mast and can still be defined as being “light”. Obviously there’s a carbon fibre mast and boom, as well as fibre stays that have been purposely chosen to reduce weight high above the waterline which translates into less draught and better performance in breezes.

All of the choices adopted for Zefira mean she is very competitive on the race track even against racers and  in spite of the many commodities she carries with her.  As for the interiors and  much of the work put in by  Remi Tessier designer and the co-owner they enhanced an undoubted feeling of both tranquillity and elegance.

Gauged chromatic variety  meets the discerning eye as it takes in lighter and darker shades of handcrafted woodwork placed without ever causing excessive contrast, followed by polished steel elements and ad hoc lighting which enhances relaxation throughout every area. The space chosen to house each piece of furniture, is fruit of  careful study that has contributed into ensuring an uncompromised degree of comfort in the owners’ suite which is situated in the stern and in each of the three guest cabins as well.

One is a twin while the other two are double each one of them sports its own private bathroom. The crew quarters are situated in the bow area and with space for a lounge and crew mess room, which translates into staff’s quality living standards on board. The yacht’s convivial areas are also well distributed and large to ensure adequate privacy to guests and owners alike.

The electronics and navigation aids installed are the most modern on the market, with data and alarm control systems and displays in each of the two external command /control stations  as well as on the bridge deck as can be expected on a state of the art ship such as this. Dictated by reasons of space we have to limit our text to that which has so far been described even when the meeting with Zefira’s owners was so stimulating  we were prompted  to go further.

Zefira is the largest vessel crafted by Fitzroy Yachts to date. Prioritization Methods and Techniques – Part 2: MoSCoW Method

In my previous article, Prioritization Methods and Techniques - Part 1: Why Prioritize and the Kano Model , I talked about the need to prioritize and the Kano model as a prioritization method. In this second article in the series on prioritization methods and techniques, I will discuss the MoSCoW method.

The MoSCoW method is a highly widespread prioritization method which was popularized by Dynamic Systems Development Method (DSDM). The term MoSCoW has nothing to do with the capital of Russia. It is an acronym derived from the first letter of each of four prioritization categories – Must have, Should have, Could have and Won’t have.[1] The two “O” are added to make the word pronounceable.

Must have: This category contains requirements or features that are absolutely mandatory. Those are fundamental to the system (being a product or a service). If any of them are neglected, the system will certainly not work or will have no value for the customer.

Should have: These features are important, ideally, we should have them for the system to work correctly. If they are not there, a workaround may be possible, but it can be costly or cumbersome. Yet, they are not mandatory and therefore do not have the highest priority. Simply put, they don’t have much impact on delivery success right now, though they must be implemented soon enough (after the “must-haves”).

Could have: These are useful additions (often small-scale improvements) that add tangible value. These are “nice-to-have” requests. In general, they do not take considerable resources, but they are not essential to implement either. Their absence won’t affect almost anything, or at least wouldn’t impact the release negatively.

Won’t have (sometimes also known as “would like to have, but not this time”): These items are not worth the investment (of time, money, energy) and are unlikely to make the cut (at least not in the near future). These requirements are of the lowest importance and can be easily omitted (definitely considered out of scope for the first release) or rescheduled for future releases.

When prioritizing requirements in a project, DSDM recommends no more than 60% effort for “must-haves” requirements and a sensible pool of “could-haves”, usually around 20% effort (see Figure 1 below). Anything that is higher than 60% effort for the “must-haves” poses a risk to the success and predictability of the project, unless the environment and the used technology are well understood, there are minimal external risks/dependencies and the team is experienced and well established. Note that we are talking about a balance based on estimated effort of requirements (i.e. the expected time it takes to implement the prioritized features) and not total number of requirements. When calculating effort for a specific timeframe (e.g. first release), “won’t haves” are excluded, as they are considered out of scope for this timeframe.[2]

Practical example

Let’s take a simple practical example. How can you categorize the features required to manufacture a child’s bicycle?

Must have: two wheels ; a frame

Should have: brakes for safe stopping; pedals; ability to adjust the saddle to accommodate growth; safety cover for the chain; stabilizers or the ability to fit them when needed (the last two features can also be classified as “could-haves” depending how essential they are for the child/parents)

Could have: bell or horn to alert others in proximity; attractive color of the bike; front suspension; Presta valves for inflating tires

Won’t have: valve caps to cover the tires valve; Bluetooth bike speaker

Even though it may seem strange not to have the pedals and the brakes in the “must have” category, in reality they are not mandatory for a child’s bike. By definition a bike is two-wheeled transportation device, so it must certainly have two wheels and a frame to link the wheels together, but everything else is subject to discussion and negotiation. For example, small kids can learn to ride a bike by simply using their feet, so no pedals and brakes are really needed. This simple example also shows that there is often a disconnect between expectations and requirements. People often have high level of expectations, but high expectations are different from must-have requirements which are mandatory and non-negotiable.

Let’s now look at the advantages and disadvantages of the MoSCoW method.

Pros of MoSCoW

• Simplicity. The MoSCoW method is one of the simplest prioritization techniques. It does not require searching for detailed data or making complicated calculations. So, it is easy to master and use because it is based on simple principles. Using this prioritization scheme in a product management context promotes mutual understanding between product people (product managers and product owners) and stakeholders. It is also a great method to resolve conflicts and to bring stakeholders to consensus. Prioritizing work using MoSCoW is fast and transparent.
• Agility for flexible scheduling and implementation. Since this prioritization method has no strict time limits for the implementation, except for the “must-have” category (items there should always go first and be implemented as soon as possible), it allows for flexible implementation timeframes per feature. Therefore, a team can easily adjust feature deliveries or releases on favorable terms based on agreement with customers/stakeholders.

Cons of MoSCoW

The MoSCoW technique is very simple, but such simplicity comes with some pitfalls.

• The technique lacks a clear consistency of implementation and lacks specific planning per feature. Even though priorities can be easily and quickly set, the MoSCoW method prioritizes the backlog items in four categories (in a similar fashion to the Kano model, covered in my previous article, which also prioritizes features in different categories), so it does not introduce any sequencing of features/backlog items and lacks specific planning. This makes it quite challenging for product people to decide on the exact priority of a feature compared to another one within the same category. At the end of the day, this drawback might put the entire release at risk.
• MoSCoW classification rules can be subjective and this creates imbalance between the absolutely required (must have or mandatory) and slightly desirable. Often, the blurred lines between categories make it hard to decide in which category a feature should go into, specifically when we talk about “must-have” and “should-have” lists. But it is sometimes also the case between “should-haves” and could-haves”. This happens due to the subjectivity of requirements. Therefore, features or stories allocated to the different categories should be approached with great thought and care and the chosen categorization should be agreed with (or well explained to) all stakeholders.

When to use the MoSCoW method

The MoSCoW method is probably the simplest and most widespread prioritization scheme for new product development, and more specifically for small products. But as we saw above, this technique also has its disadvantages and is not always effective. For instance, if you have a complicated backlog with many time-sensitive releases, consider choosing other prioritization method or complementing MoSCoW with another more accurate or comprehensive technique.

On the other hand, it is quite reasonable to use MoSCoW when prioritizing work for small (and not too complex) products, which does not have many technical limitations. The MoSCoW requirements help product people and teams take a strategic, orderly approach to prioritization. This method is great for avoiding wasted time, arguments and misdirection.
