2022 Hinckley 35

Hinckley 35 at sunset

I’ve often heard musicians describe how they can immediately recognize other great musicians in a song. Guitarists can pick out someone by tone, and drummers can tell by feel, for example. And I get how that works because some boat brands are distinguishable by their lines, whether you’re staring at them at the fuel dock or gazing upon them from a considerable distance. Hinckley is one of those brands—you see one and you instantly know. At first glance, the new Hinckley 35 falls right into this; with its beautiful teak trim, immaculate paint job and transom tumblehome, it matches the classic Downeast Picnic Boat motif for which Hinckley is famous. But then, what to do about the outboards?

Hinckley 35 idling

That’s right. For its new 35, Hinckley eschewed its customary jet propulsion in favor of a pair of Mercury or Yamaha outboards on the transom. Even though it looks the same, in a way this changes everything. In fact, Hinckley prefers that you don’t even call it a Picnic Boat. The 35 has been designed by famed marine architect Michael Peters from the ground up to run with outboard power. It might look similar, but it’s a new class of Hinckley unto itself. To maximize the outboard power, Peters optimized the design of the chines and strakes to provide more lift for getting out of the hole, as well as more stability underway. The deadrise tapers to 19 degrees at the transom. On a sunny fall morning with calm seas, we put the Hinckley 35 through our battery of performance benchmarks, and the boat held up well, carving graceful, inboard-leaning turns with no propeller slippage as we cut the wheel at 30 mph. We hit a top speed of 47.4 mph at 6,000 rpm, a solid speed for a 35-foot dayboat. Though the seas were calm, we found some boat wakes to crisscross and simulate following, quartering and head seas, and we met each manufactured sea state with nary a shudder nor rattle. The standard Zipwake interceptor system automatically adjusts the boat to the optimal running attitude. Dial back to 4,000 rpm, and you can cruise at over 30 mph for over 400 statute miles (see our performance data). When you pull into the marina, the standard joystick system and bow thruster take away all the angst of docking and close-quarters handling.

Hinckley 35 salon

Part of the new 35’s seakeeping can be attributed to the construction techniques used aboard all Hinckley boats. Every Hinckley hull is built via the resin-infusion process that incorporates carbon and epoxy, and cures in an 80-foot-long oven in Maine. It’s just a solidly built boat. The Clearview single-pane glass windshield gives this boat incredible visibility from the pilothouse, whether you’re manning the helm or keeping watch from the matching passenger’s chair. The hardtop extends over the U-shaped seating in the cockpit. A centerline walk-through leads to the open aft cockpit, with rear-facing love seats to each side and aligned along the transom to port. Access to the swim steps and outboard well is through a starboard transom door. One of my favorite features on the boat resides below the cockpit sole: a massive stowage locker that can swallow up gear, cruising provisions, and even bikes to use at the overnight marina. The electric hatch lifts on beefy gas-assisted struts at the push of a button for easy access to all your stuff.

Interior and Accessories

At the helm, a louvered wood door with a hatch to port of the wheel leads belowdecks to a well-appointed cabin, with a full galley to port, an enclosed head to starboard, and a forward V-berth.

The list of amenities aboard the Hinckley 35 is a long one and, what’s more, almost every item is standard. In fact, the only options offered on this boat are a power upgrade from 300 to 350 hp outboards, a Seakeeper 3 gyrostabilizer, and the full teak decks. (If I were signing the check, I’d likely opt for all three.)

Hinckley 35 helm

Since it’s not really a Picnic Boat, I’ll avoid comparing the Hinckley 35 to the usual list of suspects in the New England lobster realm, with the exception of the MJM 35z (starting at $768,132 with twin Mercury 300s), another outboard-powered Downeast-style boat. I’d also suggest thinking outside the box and looking at the Chris-Craft Calypso 35 (starting at $644,633 with triple Mercury 300s), a center-console pilothouse design with an open bow. Neither is a perfect comparison.

Even though there are other boats out there that are worth a look, there is still no other boat that looks like this one on the water. To go back to the music analogy, the new Hinckley 35 is playing a tune all its own.

Hinckley Yachts 35 Review

  • By Patrick Sciacca
  • March 4, 2022

Hinckley 35

There was a quick, short chop on Long Island Sound near Stamford, Connecticut, on the early fall day I ran the Hinckley 35. It was the kind of chop that could cause a trip to the dentist or possibly rearrange your internal organs—if your ride was not of the sea-slicing variety.

Fortunately, the Hinckley 35 I was aboard runs on a Michael Peters hull form with a fine entry to manage agitated sea states. A moderate transom deadrise, wider-than-average chines and running strakes help with overall stability and lift. And the 35 runs relatively level from its slow cruise to its top hop, aided in part by a longitudinal center of gravity that is right on the numbers set by Peters, according to Scott Bryant, Hinckley vice president of sales and marketing.

Hinckley 35

Additional support comes in the form the 35’s standard Zipwake, a trim system using interceptor blades that are flush-mounted to the hull. The parameters of the boat (such as length, beam and displacement) are entered into Zipwake’s system, and it automatically adjusts trim on the fly. Owners can manually adjust the interceptors too.

This 35-footer has notable speed, thanks in part to a pair of optional 350 hp Mercury outboards. The 35 I got aboard made 40 knots on the pins running at 6,000 rpm with a full load of fuel and a half-tank of water. This thoroughbred-level gallop burns 60 gallons per hour. At top speed—and considering a 10 percent fuel reserve—range is about 180 nautical miles. At 4,000 rpm and a 24-knot cruise speed, fuel burn plummets to 23.5 gph and range jumps to 276 nautical miles.

It’s admirable performance when you consider that those engines are pushing a boat displacing 13,174 pounds. Hinckley also offers Yamaha outboards, and the 35’s standard engines are twin 300s, from either Mercury or Yamaha. At press time, Hinckley had sold 15 hulls, and all the owners had picked the bigger engines, Bryant says.

Hinckley 35

I found the single-lever Mercury throttles smooth and the engines instantly responsive. The boat gets up and goes in a hurry. It’s an agile vessel that runs true with a moderate inboard heel on hard-over turns.

Sightlines are clear in all directions and made even better with the single-pane ClearView windshield. Sitting in the high-gloss teak ladder-back helm seat looking out to the water, I felt no barrier between inside and outside.

Side windows open to let in breezes on fair-weather days, and hatches over the helm and companion seat open as well. Those hatches also automatically close and lock into place.

Hinckley 35

In addition to the helm seats, there are two J-shaped settees abaft the helm for four or so guests and elements-free cruising. The cockpit seating includes two seats forward to port and starboard, as well as a settee along the transom to catch some rays underway. There is stowage under all the seating.

Supporting the vessel’s performance and helping to create comfort underway is robust, tech-savvy construction. The 35 is built end-to-end with vacuum-infused carbon-fiber composites and epoxy resin. An integrated interior structure is infused with the hull adding rigidity. The hull is then post-cured in an 80-foot oven, further strengthening the structure. Illustrating its faith in its build process, Hinckley offers a lifetime warranty on its hulls to the boat’s original owner.

The Hinckley 35’s powerplants and build materials may be throughly modern, but this vessel’s lines have a timelessness about them. The 35’s proud bow addresses the ocean, and the profile sweeps down and aft, gently carrying the freeboard lower as it descends toward the cockpit. The effect is one of flow. High-gloss teak toerails accent the lines and this transition—defining it.

Hinckley 35

A trunk cabin harks back to the days when Down East design was boatbuilding, yet it offers some rake forward, adding shape that follows the profile while adding headroom belowdecks. That single-pane windshield is also raked, enhancing the profile even more.

A mirrorlike blue hull quietly states sophistication, as do the high-gloss teak accents abovedecks and the additional gloss teak and satin finishes belowdecks. A teak-and-holly sole in the cabin puts a fine point on the ambience of tradition.

Hinckley has decided that its boat is so complete, the builder needs to offer 35 owners just three options: a Seakeeper gyrostabilizer, engine upgrades and teak decks.

Hinckley 35

Another piece of the ownership puzzle Hinckley has figured out is offering owners personalized, concierge-level service. Called YachtCare, the program lets owners tell Hinckley where they want their boat and when, and the company will have a captain deliver the boat to any dock an owner wishes. Additionally, the builder has 10 service locations along the East Coast, so if an owner is on a cruise and has an issue, there’s a service center not too far away. Owners also get a dedicated manager for their vessel; haul-out and climate-controlled offseason storage; a 24/7 hotline; preseason commissioning and launch; and more.

When you consider that the Hinckley 35 is a design that should stay in vogue for the long haul, has performance to satisfy anyone with a need for speed, and has finish work where you can see your reflection at every turn, it’s not surprising that the boat has found early fans. If past is prologue, this is only the beginning of the Hinckley 35’s story.

See Everything

Stepping aboard the Hinckley 35, the first thing I noticed was that I could see straight past the helm and across the water, as if there was no glass in the boat. It was like being outside. The house-spanning, single-pane windshield is called ClearView. Even looking deep into the upper and lower corners of the glass, I couldn’t find any distortion or warping.

Easier Docking

When it comes to close-quarters moves on the Hinckley 35, there are options. The boat comes with a Side-Power bow thruster, so a skipper could adjust the engines and thruster to maneuver into a slip like we did. There is also a joystick, offering the helmsman fingertip control if that is preferred.

Cozy Accommodations

While primarily a dayboat, the Hinckley 35 has a cabin with a V-berth forward. A filler cushion creates real estate for a couple for weekend voyages or longer cruises. Headroom belowdecks averages around 5 feet, 11 inches. A galley is abaft the berth to port and has a single-burner Kenyon electric cooktop, a sink and a GE microwave. The head is directly across from the galley. All in all, the Hinckley 35 is a perfect pocket cruiser .

2022 Hinckley 35 Guide: Complete Overview, Info, Specs & Review

John Sampson

Are you looking for a fun power cruiser ? The 2022 Hinckley 35 is one of the flagship models from this classic, respected manufacturer. Founded in 1928 by Benjamin B. Hinckley, the company would get its big break in the boating world by introducing its custom-designed motorboat, the Picnic Boat.

This model was an icon of its generation and a hybrid model of the yacht and the traditional “Lobster boat” from around the Southwest Harbor in Maine. The Hinckley 35 offers you all the classic elements of the picnic boat, with a sporty feel and platy of luxury throughout the vessel.

Design Overview

The 2022 Hinckley 35 features an overall length of 38′ 8″, with a 36′ 11″ hull, 11′ beam, and a 2′ 10″ draft. Thanks to the carefully crafted lines reminiscent of past models in the Hinckley heritage, the 35 is immediately recognizable.

The 2022 Hinckley 35 debuted at the Newport International Boat Show in late 2021 to rave reviews. At a glance, this model has a classic feel due to the use of teak trim, lustrous gel coat paintwork, and the transom tumblehome.

To breathe life into the design of the 35, Hinckley teamed up with the legend Michael Peters, one of the most esteemed yacht builders in the industry. The 35 has us remembering the Downeast Picnic Boat motif Hinckley established.

2022 Hinckley 35

The Hinckley 35 benefitted from the brand doing away with its jet-propulsion system used on previous models. We have to say that it was a good move. Hinckley decided to give the 35 an outboard setup , powered by twin 300hp Mercury Verados or twin Yamaha 300hp outboards.

When the 35 gets on a plane with the engines roaring, you can get the boat up to a top speed of 48mph at 6,000 pm, and there’s no propeller slippage cutting the wheel at 35-mph. We feel there’s plenty of power available for the 35 and anything you need to do with it.

Dialing back on the throttle to 4,000 rpm has you cruising at 30-mph for more than 400 statute miles on a 300-gallon tank. You can install the 350hp outboards to upgrade the performance, but we feel it’s unnecessary, and the standard configuration is great.

We also love the new drive system from Hinckley, using the joystick system for easy docking in the berth. The bow thruster system makes easy work of close-quarters handling.

2022 Hinckley 35

The seakeeping capability of the Hinckley 35 comes from the masterful craftsmanship of the boat design. The hull receives the award-winning resin-infusion process in its construction, incorporating epoxy and carbon materials.

Hinckley cures every hull it makes in an 80-foot-long oven at its manufacturing headquarters in Maine. The company was one of the first to start using carbon fiber in hull designs. It has a 25-year legacy of producing some of the industry’s strongest, lightest, and most efficient hulls.

Due to its proprietary hull manufacturing process occurring completely in-house, owners get a lifetime hull warranty with their Hinckley 35. Peter’s optimized the hull design with strakes and chines to give the boat more lift and stability on the plane. The hull also features a unique 19-degree deadrise tapering from the transom.

Interior, Seating, and Deck

The 35 comes with many design hallmarks that make the brand famous. We love the meticulous use of teak throughout the vessel, and we can’t say enough about the quality of the carbon-epoxy-infused hull.

The helm gets a single-pane ClearView™ windshield, offering the driver an uninterrupted view of the ocean on all sides of the boat. The plush captain’s chair accompanies the co-pilot chair. Both sit on swivels with adjustable height and plenty of plush padding for comfort.

The hardtop covers the helm and pilot’s cockpit, extending back to the U-shaped lounge seating behind the driver’s cockpit.

The twin outboards on the transom feature center mounting for easy side passaging and access to the water from the stern. They also act as swim platforms when you’re out on the water and want to get into the ocean for a dip.

The centerline walk-through design leads you to the open-plan aft cockpit, featuring rear-facing seats aligned along the port side of the transom. You can access the swim steps and outboard well through the transom door on the starboard side.

2022 Hinckley 35

Below the cockpit sole, you’ll find a spacious storage locker for gear. The hatch features an electric lift for convenience and gas-assisted struts, giving you access to the compartment at the press of a button. The helm features a louvered wooden door with a hatch.

To port leads you belowdecks to the luxurious cabin, complete with full galley, and head to starboard. The highlight is the forward V-berth, with a full-service bathroom and a mini kitchen with everything you need for spending the night on board the boat.

Thanks to the skylight and large side windows, the berth gets plenty of natural light. The interior is spacious, providing plenty of space to move around and a luxurious, relaxing area away from any bad weather on deck.

The cabin features a practical and well-thought-out setup with extraordinary craftsmanship. There’s plenty of seating, and the forward saloon converts easily into a bed accommodating two people. There’s a cabinet and drawers and room for everything you need on a weekend trip up the coastline.

The list of standard amenities on the Hinckley is extensive. The optional upgrades don’t really do justice to accommodate the extra expense. This model is great right out of the box and one of the best buys in its class in 2022.

The Hinckley brand has one of the most impressive R&D departments in the game. It’s no surprise that they’re among the leaders in carbon-fiber marine-based applications. Their hull technology is second to none.

The amazing thing is that the Hinckley 35 will only be available to a lucky few. The company only intends to build 30-models in 2022. It’s an exclusive offering suiting owners that want the top of the range in a Picnic sports model.

You get a great blend of performance, stability on the water, and handling. Hinckley also does all its servicing in-house. The company has a network of Hinckley-approved servicing agents across the coastlines of the United States.

The baseline model of the Hinckley 35 retails for between $825,000 to $865,000, depending on the commodity surcharge. With the optional extras and motor upgrade, the full-house model will run you around $1,150,000.

Additional Features

The Hinckley 35 comes with a few options, but there aren’t many. Apart from the engine upgrade, Hinckley provides options for a Seakeeper 3 gyrostabilizer and full teak on the decks.

2022 Hinckley 35 – The Verdict

Overall, this boat is one of the few models offering a WOW experience for the owner, right out of the bow. There is no real reason to upgrade the motors, as the standard performance of 48-mph offers you more than enough power.

The luxury fittings, interior, helm, and bow are what you expect from a leading manufacturing brand like Hinckley. However, with the 35, you get a Sports Picnic model that’s a standout in its class.
