Extra X99 Fast yacht tour: On board a jet-powered 45-knot superyacht

  • Superyachts

  • yacht tours

Reporting from the 2023 Cannes Yachting Festival, MBY's Alex Smith takes us on a full tour of the Extra X99 Fast, which was making its global debut...

Whether you’re looking at the 23m entry point, the 40m flagship or the 30m motor cat, Extra Yachts is all about efficient long-range platforms with seductive but practical superyacht -inspired day spaces and cruising facilities. The new Extra X99 Fast is no exception.

With naval architecture by Palumbo Superyachts, exteriors by Guida Design and interiors by Luca Dini, Extra describes the style as “modern Mediterranean flair” and that translates into a layout that majors on alfresco entertainment.

The 75m² aft deck features an unusual semi-external dining zone, which straddles the internal saloon and the expandable open-air cockpit, with an extendable 12-man table and a well placed multi-purpose bar area.

From here, another pair of convivial zones slope down towards the sea – a lounge area with low-slung settees and fold down balconies, and a spacious aft sunpad perched above a big swim platform.

While the 4m Williams Sportjet has a dedicated tender garage on the starboard side, those who want the extra versatility of a pair of jet skis will appreciate the fact that the bow also features a hydraulic crane.

On the inside, the saloon features an aft galley with a drop-down glass partition for extra privacy. It also provides a relaxed bar, plus an L-shaped sofa with armchairs – and rather cleverly, the low-level coffee tables can be raised, creating a second internal dining area.

Pershing GTX116 yacht tour: Inside a brand new 6,000hp luxury super cruiser

Below deck, there is space for up to ten guests in four large cabins, thanks to a pullman bed in each of the two twin cabins, plus a VIP cabin forward and an amidships owner’s cabin that takes full advantage of the 24ft beam.

Given the scale of all these spaces, the flybridge seems surprisingly short, with a deck that encompasses little more than a quarter of the overall length. Accessed via a stairwell from the starboard side deck, it provides a distinctly intimate relaxation zone with sun loungers, a dining table and a bar.

But while it’s certainly more compact than most upper decks, the reason for that revolves around the driving dynamics. After all, this is not some vast, ponderous floating hotel.

As the name suggests, the Extra X99 Fast is a genuinely sporting motoryacht and, in spite of a length just shy of 100ft, it backs that up with a top speed not far short of 40 knots, thanks to a lightweight carbon-fibre-infused planing hull and a trio of MAN V12-2000s or a pair of MTU 2,600hp units hooked up to waterjets.

Enjoy the tour…

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

Review of X-99

Basic specs..

X-99 is typically equipped with an inboard Bukh DV10 diesel engine at 10.0 hp (7 kW), which gives a max speed about 4.9 knots.

The transmission is a saildrive.

The fuel tank which is made of stainless steel has a capacity of 30 liters (7 US gallons, 6 imperial gallons).

Sailing characteristics

This section covers widely used rules of thumb to describe the sailing characteristics. Please note that even though the calculations are correct, the interpretation of the results might not be valid for extreme boats.

What is Capsize Screening Formula (CSF)?

The capsize screening value for X-99 is 2.11, indicating that this boat would not be accepted to participate in ocean races.

What is Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed?

The theoretical maximal speed of a displacement boat of this length is 7.1 knots. The term "Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed" is widely used even though a boat can sail faster. The term shall be interpreted as above the theoretical speed a great additional power is necessary for a small gain in speed.

The immersion rate is defined as the weight required to sink the boat a certain level. The immersion rate for X-99 is about 170 kg/cm, alternatively 953 lbs/inch. Meaning: if you load 170 kg cargo on the boat then it will sink 1 cm. Alternatively, if you load 953 lbs cargo on the boat it will sink 1 inch.

Sailing statistics

This section is statistical comparison with similar boats of the same category. The basis of the following statistical computations is our unique database with more than 26,000 different boat types and 350,000 data points.

What is Motion Comfort Ratio (MCR)?

X-Yachts who made history - X-99

Thursday 18th November 2021

In July 1985, the first real big sister to the X-79 was launched. The X-99 had more than 100 units presold, when X-Yachts introduced the plans for the boat, at Fridericia Boat Show in March 1985.

Many of the »One Design Classes« being introduced today are pure sports boats, and in our judgement are aimed at such a narrow market that they will never be able to sell in sufficient numbers to allow true International class racing. 2.

Aquarium La Rochelle

1. Famous Aquarium

La Rochelle’s state-of-the-art Aquarium is one of the most beautiful in Europe. It belongs to the top 10 provincial attractions in France. It holds three million litres of water and is home to more than 12,000 marine animals of all sorts from sharks to jelly fish. Very nice: there's a team specialised in treating sick turtles brought here specifically for expertise. When the turtles are well, they’re released back into the ocean with a GPS tracker attached and you can follow their progress via the Aquarium website.

La Rochelle market

2. Gastronomic Tour

Marché de la Rochelle in the former fishermen's district, quartier Saint Nicolas, is a very nice market with local delicacies and fresh fish, where you can also eat & drink. It is situated between the Vieux Port and the train station, an area of cobbled streets and ancient arcaded buildings. If you want to enjoy a cocktail with a different ambience, then the best place is on board of France I, a former meteorological ship, right next to the Maritime Museum. It’s now a bar and restaurant. It’s the perfect place for an aperitif with a simple snack, oysters or seafood platter.

Plage des Minimes

3. Relax on the Beach

Just a short walk from the Vieux Port you will find the Plage de la Concurrence. Behind the beach there is also a very nice Parc Charruyer with different kind of free time activities. The Chef-de-Baie beach is further from the center but probably the most pleasant because it is protected from the wind by a sea wall. The beach of Les Minimes, is the largest in La Rochelle with its shops and restaurants.

La Rochelle

The maritime trade traditions of this famous city and port on the Bay of Biscay date back to the 12th century. It was the center of fishing and maritime trade. The old town and the old port reflect its history with medieval houses, Renaissance architecture and arches from the 17th century. The tradition lives on in the new, huge and modern Les Minimes marina. How to get there: The best and the most sustainable way of transport and a great alternative to driving is taking the train from Paris (2,5 - 4 h), Nantes (2 h) or Bordeaux (2,5-3,5 h).
