Built in 2002 by Palmer Johnson, an extensive refit in 2019 has transformed Helios 2 into the the floating paradise craft which will welcome you today, with a wide variety of dedicated spaces in which to lose yourself in dreamy vacation nirvana.

Her expansive sun deck oozes charisma, with a Jacuzzi taking centre stage alongside a wet bar and stools, BBQ and padded sun loungers as well as a corner sofa for profiting from the stunning views. This area can be partially shaded on the aft deck on request. There’s also a 42 inch flip down plasma TV as well as a gym area featuring a treadmill and cross-trainer. 

The bridge deck offers a sun lounger zone with nattily striped mattresses as well as an impressive sky lounge in which to relax, chill out and socialise. A roomy L-shaped sofa dominates the space, which also features a computer station, 42 inch plasma TV, a bar and wine chiller. Step on through to the aft deck where you can experience sophisticated yet laidback al fresco dining in sunshine or under starlit skies for 10 guests.

Helios 2’s main salon is a charming space with a card table, ample seating and entertainment system, also offering adjacent formal dining for 12. Her aft deck is air conditioned and can be partially enclosed if the weather becomes inclement, providing yet another ideal zone specifically designed for the ultimate in relaxation, with comfortable sofas, a wet bar with ice maker and a further outside dining area with built-in banquette style seating.

Sleeping 10 across five spacious staterooms, a full beam master on the main deck offers a king-size bed, mini salon with chaise longue, entertainment system and spacious ensuite with double sinks, bath, enclosed WC and shower. Walk-in wardrobes and a private fully equipped office complete the master set up.

Four further guests cabins comprise two queen suites and two highly versatile twins which can be converted to king cabins. Each have additional pullman berths. Situated on the lower deck, all guest staterooms boast generous proportions, ensuite shower rooms and satellite TV and like the master, they feature blonde wood panelling and fixtures, cool pastel linens and fresh hued soft furnishings to create the ultimate bedtime oasis.

Light and airy interiors are enhanced throughout by the timelessly elegant neutral colour design palette, creating an effortless blend of comfort and sophistication combined with all mod cons which are sure to delight each and every guest.

Her water sports and toy offerings are equally impressive, with a towed 37 ft Intrepid tender, two three-person WaveRunners, four paddle boards, an RS Zest sailing boat, three kayaks, two Sea Bobs, kneeboard, wakeboard, snorkelling and fishing gear, water skis, assorted inflatables and diving by arrangement.

When it comes to fine dining, Helios 2 hits dizzying heights of culinary excellence thanks to a highly experienced galley set up which will truly tempt you with inspirational menus and innovative recipes that owe much to Los Angeles style food as well as classic French and traditional and contemporary Asian specialities.

Helios 2 is powered by two Caterpillar engines and enjoys a maximum speed of 15 knots. Accommodation

• This vessel sleeps 10 to 14 guests in 5 staterooms and 10 crew in 5 crew cabins, plus 2 in Captain’s cabin for a total of 12 crew.
• The interior is finished in a semi-gloss Anigre. The entire interior of this vessel has a calm and quiet, modern, and clean look with great accents and symmetry throughout.
• Main Salon Headroom: 82”/ 2.11m.
• Master Stateroom Headroom: 82” / 2.11m Guest Area Headroom: 83” / 2.12m.
• The spacious sun deck, covered in part by a fixed hardtop for shade, has a spa pool forward surrounded by sun beds, followed by exercise equipment artfully built in on each outboard side of the stack, with a BBQ on port side. There is a full height door in the stack, allowing access to a central staircase down through the entire ship. Aft of the stack, there is a settee with loose furniture and a teak coffee table, a bar with BBQ and stools is further aft. There is a flip down plasma TV positioned towards the bar or exercise machines and an outdoor shower. There are teak chaise lounge chairs surrounding a lovely built-in U-shaped seating area aft to starboard. Overhead an inventive mesh awning stretches from the mast and can cover the entire space on four permanent supports.

BRIDGE DECK

• The pilothouse has a raised settee with seating for four, leather cushions, and a Daino
• Reale marble table mounted on a stainless-steel pedestal. With a varnished teak and maple sole, 2 Stidd helm seats and a central chart island, the pilothouse is very spacious and inviting for owners and guests as well as working crew.
• Aft to port is the captain’s cabin with double berth outboard, desk area, ample hanging locker space and an ensuite bathroom aft.
• A day bathroom is off the central foyer area adjacent to the staircase up and down.
• The sky lounge, finished in anigre and completely rebuilt in 2007, has a very comfortable seating area aft to port, a computer station is opposite to starboard and is finished with supple fabrics giving the room texture, dimension, and warmth. An entertainment center is on the centerline forward and there is a bar with three stools in the aft port corner.
• Double doors lead out to the delightful bridge deck dining area which has a teak dining table seating 10, and numerous “Dedon Lounge Collection” sectional pieces, which combine to form an inviting lounge and entertaining area ahead of the tender and toy storage area which is serviced by a centerline 5000lb crane aft.
• Entry into the full-width Master Stateroom is through the owner’s private study which has a desk outboard and storage locker inboard. In the master stateroom there is a king size bed centerline and a seating area with chaise lounge and an easy chair to starboard, with a vanity area opposite to port. An entertainment center is centered on the aft bulkhead. The master bathroom, aft to port, has double sinks, and a separate enclosed toilet and shower with a bathtub outboard. There are extensive walk-in wardrobes across the forward part of the master stateroom.
• There is a crew passage way across the ship, ahead of the galley, and a passageway aft to the main deck foyer. A day bathroom is adjacent the main deck foyer.
• The galley to port is properly laid out and equipped with commercial equipment and a serving pantry is aft in the galley area. In 2011 the galley was stripped, and all new kitchen appliances were added. In 2013 a completely new refrigeration system was installed and in 2019 two new ovens and cook tops were added along with a new U/ C refrigerator.
• The main deck foyer has a central staircase through the entire ship on every deck with access from the lower deck accommodations all the way to the sun deck.
• The dining room, which is open to the main salon, is immediately off the main deck foyer, and seats 12 guests comfortably around a rectangular dining table. There is extensive china, crystal, and silverware storage both sides.
• The main salon has an L-Shaped seating area to port and an additional seating area to starboard. There is a game table aft on the port side and access out to the aft deck on the centerline.
• On the beautiful aft deck, which has sliding glass windows both sides and curtains aft, it is possible because of this versatility, to enjoy air-conditioned comfort or cool ocean breezes with the windows open and the air conditioning off. There is comfortable seating on two couches to port, with storage areas nearby, or around the solid teak table that seats 12. A walk-up bar with sink, refrigerator and icemaker is on the starboard side. There is also a staircase down on the starboard side, exiting the yacht at the waterline level aft of amidships for easy access to the tenders alongside thenship.
• She has a reverse transom with a starboard staircase down to the spacious swim platform, which is a perfect area for launching water sports expeditions. This area includes a dive locker.
• The crew quarters are aft of the chain locker, accessed through a private stairway from the main deck crew passageway.
• There are four crew cabins forward, each with twin upper and lower berths and ensuite bathrooms with stall showers. The engineer’s cabin with two berths, hanging locker storage, desk and ensuite bathroom with stall shower is aft, adjacent the control room.
• The crew mess is aft to port with a small crew galley and a laundry room is opposite to starboard.
• The four guest staterooms, located amidship in the most comfortable part of the ship, are all oversized and extremely comfortable.
• The two forward queen staterooms have queen berths located athwartships with settees aft, desk/vanity areas inboard and bathrooms with twin vanity sinks and stall showers forward.
• The two twin bed staterooms, located further aft, can be made into king-size staterooms by rearranging the night tables and chairs to lock the berths into place. In addition, these twin guest staterooms each have two pullman berths. Each guest stateroom has an ensuite head with shower, excellent storage, and an escape route.
• The engine room is further aft, with the engineer’s cabin aft to port and the control room opposite to starboard. Engineer’s cabin had a complete refurbishment in 2013 including new lighting, flooring, and mattress. The carpeting is new as of October 2022.
• The lazarette with water sports storage areas, dive equipment storage and work areas is all the way aft with access out a Freeman door to the wide swim platform

Meet The New Billionaires From Petco, Breitling Owner CVC

The Jersey-based owner of the pet retailer and Swiss watchmaker started trading on the Amsterdam stock exchange on Friday at a $15 billion valuation, minting 10-figure fortunes for two of its cofounders.

In the latest public offering amid a boom in European IPOs, private equity firm CVC Capital Partners went public on the Euronext Amsterdam on Friday at a price of $15 (€14) per share, valuing the company at $15 billion. The firm’s shares quickly rose, trading at nearly $19 as of 8 am Eastern time. The deal also minted two new billionaires, cofounders Donald Mackenzie and Rolly van Rappard.

Mackenzie's 6% stake is currently worth more than $1 billion. Mackenzie, who stepped down as co-chair of the firm on February 13 and remained on the board as honorary co-chair in a non-executive capacity until the IPO, also sold a chunk of shares worth $180 million (pretax). That could grow by another $27 million (at the IPO price) if the company exercises its over-allotment option within 30 days. Since CVC is based in the British crown dependency of Jersey, he likely won’t have to pay any capital gains tax on those sales. Combined with his reported ownership of the 171-foot superyacht Grace , worth an estimated $23 million according to VesselsValue, plus a Georgian estate on 866 acres in England’s Dorset and a mansion west of London, Forbes estimates the Scottish-born Mackenzie, 67, is worth $1.3 billion.

Van Rappard, the 63-year-old managing partner and remaining co-chair, on the other hand, didn’t sell any of his shares. His 6.7% stake is worth $1.3 billion. Like Mackenzie, he also owns a yacht, the 184-foot Blue II , worth an estimated $32 million per VesselsValue. He owns 50% of the ship, with the other half held by fellow CVC cofounder Steve Koltes through his Jersey-based family office Kaltroco. The yacht can also navigate through sea ice in polar regions and features a sauna, steam room and turkish bath.

Born in the Caribbean island of Curaçao, the Dutch businessman—whose full name is Louis Rodolph Jules Ridder van Rappard—lives in London. His Luxembourg-based family office, Steflot, held $224 million in net book value as of its latest filing in December 2022, including investment firm Imker Capital. Altogether, Forbes estimates Van Rappard is worth at least $1.5 billion. Representatives for CVC declined to comment on the valuation.

Before the IPO, CVC also paid out a $327 million (pretax) dividend to its shareholders—a payout that translates to roughly $23 million each for Mackenzie and Rappard and $14 million for Koltes.

CVC was established in 1981 as the European operations of Citicorp Venture Capital, the VC arm of Citigroup. In 1993, Mackenzie, van Rappard, Koltes and five other cofounders (all of whom have since left the company) acquired the business and spun it out as CVC Capital Partners, going on to raise their first $630 million fund in 1996 and shifting their focus to private equity. CVC now has $198 billion in assets under management with offices in 29 cities across six continents. It’s best known for investments in sports, from its $2 billion leveraged buyout of the Formula 1 racing series in 2006—which it sold to publicly traded Liberty Media for $8 billion (enterprise value) in 2016—to its $2.1 billion deal with Spanish soccer league La Liga in 2021 for an 8.25% cut of TV rights over the next 50 years.

CVC's holdings include pet food retailer Petco, which it bought alongside a Canadian pension fund for $4.6 billion in 2015; online university platform Multiversity, which it bought from Italian billionaire Danilo Iervolino in 2021; Swiss luxury watchmaker Breitling; plus other high-profile sports investments including the Women’s Tennis Association and Indian Premier League cricket team Gujarat Titans.

“When we founded CVC in the early 90s it was our ambition to create a multi-generational business that would continue to flourish long after the founders had gone,” Mackenzie said in a statement announcing his departure in February. “I believe we have achieved that. The business is in very good shape and in good hands.”

In 2023, CVC reported $1.2 billion in revenue, largely made up of $976 million in management fees, and EBITDA (earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization) of $692 million. While that was a 3.5% increase from 2022, it’s a lot smaller than asset management behemoths such as BlackRock and Blackstone, or even European peers like Swedish private equity firm EQT—all of which have annual revenues of at least $6 billion.

"They have a multi-pronged approach. They do private credit, providing credit opportunities for companies where they don't necessarily want to take loans from banks. They also have pretty big infrastructure opportunities that they're working on," says Dean Kim, head of equity research at brokerage William O'Neil.

Infrastructure is a growing asset class for private equity, with BlackRock announcing a $12.5 billion deal to acquire infrastructure-focused Global Infrastructure Partners in January. Last September, CVC bought a 60% stake in Dutch infrastructure investment outfit DIF Capital Partners for an undisclosed amount.

CVC’s IPO could be dampened by heightened tensions in the Middle East and market pessimism about interest rate cuts in the U.S., which has dragged down the stock prices of BlackRock and Blackstone by 8% and 4%, respectively, over the past month. But in Europe, where the European Central Bank is expected to cut rates soon, there could be stronger growth for asset managers like CVC.

“European asset managers should do well in the long term because the ECB is on its way to cut rates,” adds Kim. “And when that happens, asset gathering becomes easier, there's more liquidity in the market. Money has to go somewhere it can generate returns."

The largest shareholder in CVC is publicly traded private equity firm Blue Owl Capital, which bought a 10% stake in several CVC subsidiaries for about $1.1 billion in November 2021, falling to 8.1% before the IPO. The firm, which has minted two billionaires— Doug Ostrover and Michael Rees —since going public itself in 2021, then bought more shares in the public offering for roughly $211 million, giving it a 9.4% stake after the transaction worth $1.8 billion.

While not as wealthy as Mackenzie and van Rappard, Koltes—the only other cofounder who still has a role at CVC—also saw a significant boost to his net worth. His 4.2% stake is worth some $760 million, plus roughly $41 million (pretax) from share sales, which could grow to $47 million with the over-allotment. The 68-year-old American stepped down as CVC’s co-chair in January 2022 and served as honorary co-chair alongside Mackenzie in a non-executive role until the IPO. His family office, Kaltroco, has also invested in Mediterranean fast-casual restaurant chain Taim, auto industry M&A advisory firm Dave Cantin Group and German VC firm 468 Capital. Forbes estimates Koltes is worth more than $800 million.

“CVC outgrew a dependence on any single individual or group of individuals long ago. The firm attracts, motivates and energizes a collection of talent second to none. For everything I can do well, there are dozens in the firm who can do it better,” Koltes said in a statement when he stepped down in January 2022.

Two longtime CVC executives, Rob Lucas and Javier de Jaime Guijarro, kept all of their shares in the firm after the IPO. Their stakes are worth about $660 million and $650 million, respectively.

Jefferies CEO Rich Handler cashes in more than $65M in stock to buy yacht

Rich Handler recently offloaded a boatload of Jefferies Financial Group stock.

The investment bank on Wednesday disclosed the transaction in both a press release and Securities and Exchange Commission filing, saying its CEO had done so "to facilitate the purchase of a personal boat and to pay tax obligations."

The sale involved 1.5 million shares and equated to $65.25 million, according to Jefferies.

Handler said in a statement that he "do[es] not intend to sell any further shares." Jefferies shares have posted more than a 41% increase in the past year.

Handler’s stake in the investment bank became roughly 19.25 million shares "on a fully diluted basis" post-transaction, according to Jefferies.

"I remain extremely bullish on Jefferies and fully committed to helping us continue to build the best independent, global and full-service investment banking firm," the CEO said.

Handler explained the offloading of shares as a "gift to myself and my family."

The only reasons Handler has ever offloaded Jefferies stock in the past were taxes and philanthropy, according to the investment bank.

Handler is acquiring a 164-foot yacht built by Westport that belongs to billionaire and Fertitta Entertainment owner Tilman Fertitta, the Financial Times reported .

Fertitta also owns a larger, 252-foot yacht that boasts a pool and helipad, according to Boat International. That newer vessel reportedly came from Feadship.

"Haha! Maybe the best advertising for @jefferies is that our customers sell us their ‘ smaller boats ’ after they can easily upgrade! @TilmanJFertitta!" Handler wrote in a Thursday tweet that included an image of the book "Where Are the Customers’ Yachts? Or A Good Hard Look at Wall Street" by Fred Schwed Jr.

More than 10,800 yachts currently exist, according to the Superyacht Times.

Balinese inspired touches, such as a solid slab dining table with natural unfinished edges, and colorful blown glass lighting are just some of the elements. Other details include inlaid silk carpets, organic fabrics and textures, woven leather and natural stone.

Aside from her large interior volume, a design element of particular note is the large owner’s suite, located on the upper deck, including a stately lounge, private outdoor deck, dining area, and a customized room for children or family members. Forward on the main deck, where the master is traditionally located, is a fully-equipped gym with a sauna, and a private office with an antique, German-built safe. Both of these areas include stained glass skylights and large hull-side windows.

Outdoors, Arianna has a variety of areas for alfresco dining or lounging in the sun. There is a large aft seating area on the main deck, and the sun deck features a day head, Jacuzzi tub, sunning chairs, and a large island bar. Guests are shaded by a lightweight carbon fiber bimini, and an elevator, which travels to all four decks, allows guests easy access to her teak-deck.

Arianna is equipped with twin Caterpillar 3512B engines, which give her a cruising speed of 14.5 knots and a maximum speed of 16 knots. She carries 21,900 U.S. gallons of fuel and has a range of over 5,000 nautical miles. Her main tender is stowed in a float-in garage with a smaller tender stowed on the sun deck.

Community reels from birthday party tragedy at boat club that left 2 kids dead

A mourner quietly placed a bouquet of cellophane-wrapped flowers on a folding chair Sunday morning outside the Swan Boat Club in Monroe County's Berlin Township, where just the day before police say chaos unfolded when a suspected drunken driver slammed her SUV through a wall.

Inside the building, a young child’s birthday party had been taking place.

In an instant, two children — a brother and sister, ages 5 and 8 — were dead and about a dozen other people, including several other children, were critically injured. Among those hospitalized Sunday were the mother of the two dead children and their older brother.

The 66-year-old woman who was driving the SUV is being held in the Monroe County Jail for suspicion of driving while intoxicated causing death, a 15-year felony. Police said there could be additional charges as the investigation continues.

"It’s so sad," said Paul Schmidt, 46, who lives next to the club and witnessed the aftermath of the crash. Speaking to a reporter Sunday morning, he noted that the scene was so horrific that even "the cop was throwing up in the yard."

A GoFundMe fundraising account , linked at the club's website , was set up to defray funeral and burial expenses for the children, identified in the account only by their first names as 5-year-old "Zayn" and 8-year-old "Lana" and to help their mother, "Mariah," and older brother, "Jayden," with medical expenses.  

Within hours, tens of thousands of dollars had been raised. By late Sunday evening, donations topped $100,000.

The club — at 6332 Brancheau Road, about 30 minutes southwest of Detroit — was closed Sunday, the result, the private club said on Facebook, of the "terrible accident" with many injuries and much damage.

Schmidt — who had recorded on cell phone videos the SUV driving past his home and the 3 p.m. crash ― said some of the footage was too graphic to share with the public. He estimated the driver, who he said lives near the club, appeared be going 40 mph or more.

The more graphic recordings, which he played for the Free Press, showed a room set up for a party, decorated with colorful banners and balloons. Some of the youngsters ― who, Schmidt said ― appeared to have been lining up for cake.

The crash left a large hole in the wall and the sound of the impact could be heard several houses down the gravel road. It was followed by the screams of children, parents and grandparents. The adults, in a panic, scooped up crying toddlers, trying to scurry to safety.

The two siblings were pronounced dead at the scene, police said. The other victims were rushed by ambulances and two medical helicopters for treatment at area hospitals.

Arraignment possible Monday

By Sunday, the hole in the wall, where the SUV smashed through, had been boarded up, but the yellow police caution tape, twisted metal siding, debris and discarded medical supplies, like blue latex gloves and bandages, were strewn about in the dirt.

A bounce house, which had been set up for the party, had been deflated.

The name of the SUV driver was not released. She was taken to the Monroe County Jail, where, authorities said, she is expected to be held until she can be arraigned.

Monroe County Sheriff’s deputies, one of whom was still investigating the scene Sunday, told the Free Press the name of the suspect or more details of the crash, such as her blood alcohol level, would not be released until after an arraignment, which was unlikely until Monday.

At a late Saturday night press conference, Monroe County Sheriff Troy Goodnough’s voice quavered as he spoke to reporters, appearing to be fighting back tears as he read a statement. The vehicle, he said, slammed into the north wall, moving fast enough to go about 25 feet inside the building until it stopped.

It was, the sheriff said, as he described the scene that first responders saw, "extremely chaotic and with high level of emotions of those directly involved and those who witnessed this horrific incident." At least 15 people, including adults, were injured.

The sheriff said that nine people, three of them children, were driven by ambulances and airlifted by two medical helicopters to area hospitals with life-threatening injuries. Several other less seriously injured people, the sheriff added, were rushed away by nonemergency vehicles.

Multiple agencies from three counties scrambled to reach the scene and try to provide aid.

Neighbors near the boat club said that before slamming into the birthday celebration, it appeared that the SUV also had hit — or backed into — a small pine tree and a Ford F-150 pickup, damaging the front end, and crashing into it with such force it pushed it back at least a dozen feet, causing it to knock over a wooden fence.

Ed Wedderski, 72, said he and his son, who owns the silver pickup, heard the SUV hit the truck — and then crash through the wall.

Wedderski said he knows the suspect, who is a neighbor and has lived in the area for decades. He said he never had problems with her, calling her "the nicest person," who generally drove slowly.

A drink at Verna's Tavern

Before the suspect apparently crashed into the pickup and club, the sheriff had said Saturday, it's believed she had been at a Newport watering hole, Verna’s Tavern, which deputies briefly closed as part of the crash investigation.

"We went in, we shut the business down," Goodnough said Saturday, when pressed whether the tavern would be facing police scrutiny. "We are in the process of executing a search warrant for information as to the business conducted at that day."

Sunday, the tavern had reopened.

When asked by the Free Press what happened, workers at Verna's on Sunday declined to comment.

Angie Huffman — who said in an email to the Free Press that her mother owns the establishment, and Verna was her great-grandma — confirmed the police suspect was at the eatery at 11 a.m., had a glass of wine and a bowl of soup, adding that she's confident the investigation will show the restaurant is "not at fault."

"She left before noon and was completely sober," Huffman said of the suspect. "We understand the need for an investigation and we are cooperating with the police. We offered to give them anything they needed. The sheriff wanted a search warrant."

Huffman added: "Our thoughts and prayers go out to everyone involved. Our town will never be the same."

In a sad twist, the area where the tragedy unfolded has long been a place to enjoy life.

The boat club, which sits in the shadow of the DTE Fermi II nuclear plant was started in the 1940s as a place for boating enthusiasts on Swan Creek to meet to play cards, have a beer and kickback, mostly during the hot summer months, has faced its share good and bad times over the years. It is just off Lake Erie.

The club, in its early years thrived, its website suggested.

The club history boasted of hosting "great regattas," "snow mobile races" and "famous chicken dinners," which it still offers. At one time it’s membership even included Michigan’s governor, the late G. Mennen (Soapy) Williams.

In the '70s, the club website said, its membership dropped to less than 50 members.

But since then, the club — which now also offers dockage for more than 125 member boats up to 40 feet long — said its numbers were rebounding and was "sound and prosperous with a card-carrying membership of over 250."

Neighbors, like Schmidt, said he doesn’t know what will happen to the club now.

A community grieves

Through much of Sunday afternoon, many in the Monroe County communities affected by the tragedy were flyspecking the news for more clues to how the deadly crash happened and grieving the loss of the young children.

At the Burger King in Newport, about a couple of miles from the tavern where the suspect may have been, employees shared details with each other about what they knew about the incident — and traded other stories about terrible wrecks.

Alana Laughery, 31, said she was shocked.

"It’s absolutely tragic," she said of the crash, adding that she has a 5-year-old son. "As the day goes on you hear more and more and it just gets worse and worse as more people are affected by this. Even the kids who weren’t physically injured will have to live with these memories of this traumatic event."

She said that she just couldn’t comprehend how the kids and parents must feel.

"I can’t imagine this happening," she said. "I can’t imagine going out for a day to celebrate and something out of your control happens. You think you are in a safe place, surrounded by walls — and the next thing you know, you’re underneath a vehicle."

She said that she could not imagine the horror that families had to go through.

"Did she sit there?" Laughery asked herself, trying to picture the driver after she went through the wall. "Did she move the car? Did anyone attempt to move the car? How did the victims get out? How long were they there? How horrific!"

And, Laughery also asked: "How can we keep this from happening again?"
