Iconic yachts Nariida (ex Wallygator II)

When I devised Wallygator II , the Wally 105, I was dreaming not only of cruising around the world with my young family but also competing in races along the way. The boat therefore had to be capable of very fast ocean crossings and be stable and comfortable for long, bluewater cruising. In fact, these are the pillars of the Wally concept, exemplified in our slogan: Fast and Easy.

Every kind of new idea, new material and new technology was explored and applied on Wallygator II : carbon fibre, titanium, electronics to control 360 functions on board, ultra-light honeycomb interior joinery, retractable propellers, fully hydraulic manoeuvres… It is still rare to find so much technology in one boat. I was willing to achieve the best quality at any cost, and supervised every detail of the construction.

Wallygator II allowed many suppliers to develop revolutionary products which are still state of the art in our industry. For example, carbon cloth, developed by North Sails with the support of Luca Bassani, allows all the sailing superyachts to proceed quickly and safely.

At the heart of the Wally 105 is a diesel/hydraulic propulsion system, made by Cariboni of Italy, that replaces the conventional main engine and propeller, shaft and strut with twin retractable hydraulic four-bladed thrusters, one amidships and one in the bow. Both units can rotate through 135 degrees and have forward and aft thrust to allow the helmsman, with joysticks, to effectively have 360 degree control. The thrusters descend in just 15 seconds, and then the yacht can literally move sideways out of the dock. With both units engaged, forward movement at up to 12 knots is possible.

Sailors tell me that _Wallygator II (_now Nariida ) is still the best-looking boat built by Wally, but I remember that when she was launched those same sailors were very critical of her! She took me across the Atlantic for the first time in such a powerful and safe way that I didn’t want the voyage to end, and we competed in fantastic races boosted by the Sardinian Mistral, several times hitting more than 20 knots and losing sight of our rivals – behind us! We also sailed long and unforgettable cruises with my family and lots of friends – all my children would be very happy if I could buy her back.

Many people helped me to make my dream come true, among them Luca Brenta, Don Watson, Tom Whidden and Gianni Cariboni – and my wonderful crew, who are still sailing with me on the big 118 WallyPower . When I saw Mari-Cha IV sailing a few years ago, I had the distinct feeling of seeing a true daughter of Wallygator II , developed using newer technologies but following the same concepts.

The two years spent developing and building this delightful boat were a unique period of my life. I was in an ‘inspired mood’, like an artist in a trance while creating his life’s masterpiece. I don’t know if I will ever be able to repeat such a magical time but I wish everybody could go through the same experience.

Multiple profiles with model looks

The wallypower50 combines the more open design of the wallytenders with the more spacious areas of the wallypower58, with an extensive options list that mean you can define your wallypower50 to meet your operational wishes. Love the vertical stem and inimitably striking lines of the wallypowers? The new wallypower50 carries that design DNA in her profile and her hull, matching flair with finesse. But if you want an element of wallytender practicality, no problem – you can spec a wraparound fender like those found on the wallytenders to give you more rugged workhorse capability.

Deck divine and interior iconic

Central to the onboard experience is the beautifully drawn balance between rugged practicality and sublime functionality, and it is here that the shared genes between the wallytenders and the wallypowers is truly evident.

The wallypower50 boasts all the open space of her smaller cousins, which lends herself perfectly to working tender operational parameters, but adds touches that speak to her standalone capabilities too. There are two sunbeds aft instead of one, with a generous walkway between them offering easy boarding and disembarkation; moreover, drop-down aft bulwarks extend the aft deck space by six square metres, creating a luxurious area for enjoying the sea or enjoying a sundowner or two with family and friends.

Forward of the sunbeds, nestling under the protection of the angular cockpit structure yet still delivering an alfresco feel, is the cockpit saloon. A dining table with banquettes and further bench seating comfortably accommodates eight guests, with space for more on forward-facing bench seats plus the helm chairs. Of course, there is also a foredeck sunpad with adjustable headrests, ideal for soaking up some rays at anchor or away from prying eyes when moored stern-to; there is also easy access to the hidden anchoring system, which itself is not only a neat design trick but also means even the foredeck is clutter free.

The helm itself is elegant and modern, offering all controls to hand and with two large MFDs providing access to all operating and systems data as well as a comprehensive navcomms suite. The helm is ideally located for all-round visibility – particularly pertinent when riding the wallypower50 to her higher performance limits.

Below, the wallypower50 reveals her power roots, with not only a full head and shower but a welcoming space that can offer everything you need for weekending, or even longer cruising. A large forward double berth, cosy saloon area and kitchenette galley, all finished to the highest standards, mean the wallypower50 can just as easily be your pied-a-terre wherever you wish to go – a luxurious and inviting studio apartment that’s perfect for couples.

“On deck and below deck, the wallypower50 really shows her true colours in terms of being able to meet the demands of any boater and any operating profile,” says De Vivo. “From tender to weekender, she can do it all.”

Life, accelerated

The wallypower50 doesn’t just encompass flexibility, she also offers a bridge into the rarefied world of true performance boating – because if a thrilling, responsive, exhilarating dream-ride is what you’re after, of course there’s a version for you.

The standard model offers propulsion via twin Volvo Penta IPS650s that offer a 30-knot cruise and a top speed of 36 knots, all the while combining performance with easy handling thanks to a perfect hull, and joystick control with optional DPS for close-quarters situations.

For those who revel in real performance, there’s the wallypower50X. Offered in two variants, each with quad Mercury outboards, the wallypower50X multiplies the Wally factor and takes you for a serious blast. With the quad 400hp options, you’re looking at a 48-knot max with a range of 240 nautical miles. Step up to the quad 500hp option and watch the wallypower50X power to more than 50 knots.

It’s not just about grunt, of course. The wallypower50 and wallypower50X draw on a deep-V hull to offer stability at speed and the ability to cruise faster even in bigger seas, meaning more scope to enjoy everything the wallypower50 offers in more conditions.

Tested: Wally 48 Wallytender

Wally marked its 25th anniversary with the launch of the 48 Wallytender, the first of many new models that majority shareholder Ferretti Group is promising. The first two Wallytenders were on display at the Cannes Yachting Festival, one with a black hull and the other in a metallic silver.

The 48’s hull is an evolution of the original Wallytender designs, the first of which hit the water nearly 20 years ago. Since then, just over 80 have been delivered. Most of the originals were built in Tunisia, but this new version is built in Forli, Italy, home of the Ferretti Group.

The near-plumb, wave-piercing bow, the low sheer line and the chunky, all-around rub rail are a little different, but the running surfaces are essentially the same as those on the 48’s predecessor, the Wally Power 47. The original 47s still turn heads, but this latest version adds modern pizazz.

For instance, there’s now a galley and dinette abaft the helm seats. The painted carbon-fiber arch and hardtop contains white-acrylic skylights, which means less of a dark shadow beneath them. There’s also a retractable, five-step passerelle that doubles as a swim ladder. And there are fold-down quarter cheeks. A few seconds after flicking a switch, the after bulwark sections descend, more than doubling the usable teak-deck space around the swim platform.

Belowdecks, the decor is minimalist. The veneers are a softly sealed light oak or teak. The companionway is a one-piece carbon-fiber molding, as is the whole sole. (Stefano De Vivo, Ferretti Group’s chief commercial officer, says he was walking through the assembly hall when he saw a sole molding being carried aboard; he quipped that if you put a mast with it, you could probably sail it.) There’s a head with a shower stall, and a sofa to port. To starboard is a low sideboard and stowage. The double berth tapers into the bow.

This model also has a 10.5 kW Mase generator, air conditioning, a Seakeeper 6 stabilizer and a 17-gallon-per-day watermaker. It may say tender on the tin, but this boat is a weekender on the water.

Wally founder Luca Bassani has a soft spot for this model, given he still has a 2005 Wally Power 47 as his personal boat. With twin Yanmars and Kamewa water jets, it has logged around 37,000 nautical miles, many of them racked up between Italy’s Portofino—where he has a home on the hill—and his favorite Mediterranean island, Corsica. That run includes an open-sea dash of at least 150 nautical miles; the boat’s certification permits offshore use in winds up to 40 knots and seas to 13 feet. Not that most people want to go cruising in that kind of slop, of course, but Wallytenders are built for the ride, with solid vinylester-resin laminates below the waterline and foam core above, all vacuum-bagged. The standard finish is white gelcoat, but most owners opt for paint.

Whereas the old Wallytenders had either sterndrives or water jets, the 48 has 480 hp Volvo Penta IPS650-D6 diesels. The Wallytender 48 I got aboard had a top speed of 35 knots. More lightly loaded, Wally says, the boat can hit 38 knots. At 31 or 32 knots, her range would be around 300 nautical miles.

As of the Cannes show, four hulls had been sold, including two to owners of older Wallytenders and one to the owner of a sailing yacht. The fifth will be the first to get outboard propulsion, with four Mercury Verado 450Rs and a projected 54-knot top-end speed.

Look for that hull—no matter what color it might be—at the Miami International Boat Show.

Wally 93 – the new cruiser-racer designed for life in the fast lane

A further adventure in the performance sailing market for the Italian stylists at Wally Yachts.

The introduction of the racy Wallycento class in 2012 was a big step into the performance arena for a brand best known for producing stylish superyachts. That first boat, Hamilton , underachieved and was sold, lengthened and modified under the design watch of Rolf Vrolijk. Relaunched as the 107ft Open Season she has now become a regatta-winning machine (see the video round-up of the Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup from 2015, below).

The same collaboration between Judel/Vrolijk and Wally has now produced a stunning cruiser-racer, the Wally 93 , for a current Wally owner. A supremely light, powerful, clean and modern-looking design, she promises to be a missile on the water. According to Wally’s founder, Luca Bassani, the sail area to displacement ratio of the 93 is even greater than that of the Wallycento.

Advanced construction techniques, including the use of a CNC female carbon mould, high modulus unidirectional carbon fibre and autoclave prepreg composite are being employed to keep the new yacht’s displacement down to 35.5 tonnes (a cento is around 50 tonnes). A lifting keel extends the draught from 4.5m to a high performance 6.2m.

“[She is] very powerful upwind with the same draught as the Wallycento. The Wally 93 will be able to keep her lane after the start on the first upwind leg,” says Rolf Vrolijk. “The performance is optimised for light to medium conditions. The yacht will have the ability to start surfing with 16 knots of wind, and [is] easily capable of exceeding the true wind speed.”

The near flush deck design uses low coamings to help camouflage the guest cockpit, which is clear of sailing systems. The companionway leads to the crew and guest cabins, which are located aft of the saloon. This helps give privacy to the saloon and forward owner’s cabin.

Launch is scheduled for next summer in time for the Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup 2018. The fourth Wallycento, which is a Mark Mills design, is due to launch this summer.

Cruising the Moskva River: A short guide to boat trips in Russia’s capital

There’s hardly a better way to absorb Moscow’s atmosphere than on a ship sailing up and down the Moskva River. While complicated ticketing, loud music and chilling winds might dampen the anticipated fun, this checklist will help you to enjoy the scenic views and not fall into common tourist traps.

How to find the right boat?

There are plenty of boats and selecting the right one might be challenging. The size of the boat should be your main criteria.

Plenty of small boats cruise the Moskva River, and the most vivid one is this yellow Lay’s-branded boat. Everyone who has ever visited Moscow probably has seen it.

This option might leave a passenger disembarking partially deaf as the merciless Russian pop music blasts onboard. A free spirit, however, will find partying on such a vessel to be an unforgettable and authentic experience that’s almost a metaphor for life in modern Russia: too loud, and sometimes too welcoming. Tickets start at $13 (800 rubles) per person.

Bigger boats offer smoother sailing and tend to attract foreign visitors because of their distinct Soviet aura. Indeed, many of the older vessels must have seen better days. They are still afloat, however, and getting aboard is a unique ‘cultural’ experience. Sometimes the crew might offer lunch or dinner to passengers, but this option must be purchased with the ticket. Here is one such  option  offering dinner for $24 (1,490 rubles).

If you want to travel in style, consider Flotilla Radisson. These large, modern vessels are quite posh, with a cozy restaurant and an attentive crew at your service. Even though the selection of wines and food is modest, these vessels are still much better than other boats.

Surprisingly, the luxurious boats are priced rather modestly, and a single ticket goes for $17-$32 (1,100-2,000 rubles); also expect a reasonable restaurant bill on top.

How to buy tickets?

Women holding photos of ships promise huge discounts to “the young and beautiful,” and give personal invitations for river tours. They sound and look nice, but there’s a small catch: their ticket prices are usually more than those purchased online.

“We bought tickets from street hawkers for 900 rubles each, only to later discover that the other passengers bought their tickets twice as cheap!”  wrote  (in Russian) a disappointed Rostislav on a travel company website.

Nevertheless, buying from street hawkers has one considerable advantage: they personally escort you to the vessel so that you don’t waste time looking for the boat on your own.

Prices start at $13 (800 rubles) for one ride, and for an additional $6.5 (400 rubles) you can purchase an unlimited number of tours on the same boat on any given day.

Flotilla Radisson has official ticket offices at Gorky Park and Hotel Ukraine, but they’re often sold out.

Buying online is an option that might save some cash. Websites such as  this   offer considerable discounts for tickets sold online. On a busy Friday night an online purchase might be the only chance to get a ticket on a Flotilla Radisson boat.

This  website  (in Russian) offers multiple options for short river cruises in and around the city center, including offbeat options such as ‘disco cruises’ and ‘children cruises.’ This other  website  sells tickets online, but doesn’t have an English version. The interface is intuitive, however.

Buying tickets online has its bad points, however. The most common is confusing which pier you should go to and missing your river tour.

“I once bought tickets online to save with the discount that the website offered,” said Igor Shvarkin from Moscow. “The pier was initially marked as ‘Park Kultury,’ but when I arrived it wasn’t easy to find my boat because there were too many there. My guests had to walk a considerable distance before I finally found the vessel that accepted my tickets purchased online,” said the man.

There are two main boarding piers in the city center:  Hotel Ukraine  and  Park Kultury . Always take note of your particular berth when buying tickets online.

Where to sit onboard?

Even on a warm day, the headwind might be chilly for passengers on deck. Make sure you have warm clothes, or that the crew has blankets ready upon request.

The glass-encased hold makes the tour much more comfortable, but not at the expense of having an enjoyable experience.

Getting off the boat requires preparation as well. Ideally, you should be able to disembark on any pier along the way. In reality, passengers never know where the boat’s captain will make the next stop. Street hawkers often tell passengers in advance where they’ll be able to disembark. If you buy tickets online then you’ll have to research it yourself.

There’s a chance that the captain won’t make any stops at all and will take you back to where the tour began, which is the case with Flotilla Radisson. The safest option is to automatically expect that you’ll return to the pier where you started.
