Summer wind history.

SUMMER WIND was built between 1938 and 1940 by the Astoria Shipyard in Astoria, Oregon for the United States Coast & Geodetic Survey (now part of NOAA).  According to the design criteria, she was to be large enough to be self-sufficient at sea for up to 6 months with a crew of 3 officers and 14 sailors and surveyors, yet small and maneuverable enough to enter small uncharted bays. She was commissioned to produce the first modern nautical charts of the Aleutian Islands, which required crossing some of the roughest and most inhospitable ocean in the world. Her design was featured in the 1942 version of the United States Hydrographic Manual

Although built to work, SUMMER WIND was given the lines of a classic fantail yacht. Her designer, H. C. Hanson, was said to be influenced in his early years by Ted Geary, a famous yacht designer who produced many classic fantail yachts of the 1920’s such as Thea Foss ,  Blue Peter , and Malibu .  Later Hansen designs were decidedly boxier and less graceful-looking.

Astoria Marine Construction used the finest materials and craftsmanship, including old growth fir planks up to 80 feet long, 8" x 8” oak frames, pressure treated lumber, monel fastenings, ironbark toerails and rubrails, and Burmese teak. After the war,  SUMMER WIND/E. LESTER JONES performed survey work in Puget Sound, the San Juans, and throughout Alaska as far north as Bristol Bay. Many of the bays and mountains in Southeast Alaska and the Anchorage area were named after her crew members’ relatives. She is also believed to have performed survey work in Hawaii and the Panama Canal. She was fitted with what was then the most modern electronics, including one of the first electronic depth sounders, and an early LORAN unit. Each winter was spent in Seattle at the NOAA dock on Lake Union with a full-time crew of three performing maintenance and upgrades. In 1971,  SUMMER WIND was surplused and sold at auction. In typical government fashion, the engines were completely rebuilt just prior to the sale. After a brief trip through Central America to Florida, she was purchased by local Seattleite Dave Updike, who returned her to Seattle and owned her for 20 years until his death. She was then purchased by her current owners, who have used her as a cruising yacht and home on Lake Union and Lake Washington since 1993.

SUMMER WIND

SUMMER WIND is a 32.0 m Motor Yacht, built in Taiwan by Horizon and delivered in 2012. She is one of 4 105 models.

Her top speed is 22.0 kn, her cruising speed is 16.0 kn, and she boasts a maximum cruising range of 1500.0 nm at 12.0 kn, with power coming from two Caterpillar diesel engines. She can accommodate up to 8 guests in 4 staterooms, with 5 crew members waiting on their every need. She has a gross tonnage of 170.0 GT and a 6.55 m beam.

She was designed by Horizon , who also completed the naval architecture. Horizon has designed 98 yachts and created the naval architecture for 149 yachts for yachts above 24 metres.

Her interior was designed by Nikki Parris - she is built with a Teak deck, a GRP hull, and GRP superstructure.

Powered by twin CAT 1600bhp engines, the luxury yacht Summer Wind has a cruising speed of 16 knots and top speed of 22 knots at full load. Thanks to the advanced technology Horizon utilizes to control weight, Summer Wind is lighter than previous RP97 models – even though she has plenty of sound insulation material – and she runs 2 knots faster.

The stylish exterior of the RP97 superyacht Summer Wind was designed by well-known Sweden designer John Lindblom , and her interior design was a collaborative effort between Horizon’s in-house design team and Nikki Parris from the owner’s selected Australian Design Company.

With a 21ft beam and 105ft in length, the 29.57m Summer Wind yacht features a spacious salon incorporated with a custom-designed stereo theater system by well-known Australian company Goldclass – the 65-inch plasma TV gives the salon the feel of a private theater, which is ideal for entertaining. The dining area, which is highlighted by a large window that brings in natural sunlight, can accommodate up to 10 guests.

Below deck, the accommodations have been designed to meet the owner’s requirements and incorporate 3 en-suite staterooms that provide plenty of livable space on board.

Private Yacht Charter Updates & Safety Information

We are excited to get back to cruising and helping you plan an unforgettable private event on the water in Miami! As we resume rentals for all luxury vessels, please know that the health and well-being of our guests and crew members is our number one priority. We are closely monitoring the guidelines from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the World Health Organization (WHO), as well as our local health departments and authorities on the best practices while operating. Our ample yachts feature multiple decks with indoor and outdoor spaces. We will continue to assess, refine, and update our standards to keep you safe as new information is available.

COVID-19 Safety Measures

Social distancing.

• Per current guidelines, our 60” round tables will be set six feet apart for six guests, as opposed to our previous ten, which will offer ample room and additional space between guests.
• Our flow-through dining arrangement will allow us to control the number of guests in the dining area at any one time, as well as the flow to stations, which will limit lines and guest contact.

Employee Requirements

• All employees are required to do a self-check prior to the start of their shift. All staff uniforms will adhere to CDC guidelines. This will include masks constantly and gloves while handling food that will be disinfected/changed for every event.

Cleaning & Sanitation

• We will be providing hand sanitizing stations throughout the vessel, at boarding on the dock, on every deck, as well as near food and beverage areas.
• We will have a specialized team thoroughly clean and disinfect key surfaces and areas before and after each event, with two hours specifically designated to ensure that this task is prioritized.
• To maintain cleanliness throughout the event, cleaning specialists will be tasked with ongoing cleaning and disinfecting of high-touch and common areas, which include but are not limited to handrails, backs of chairs, doorknobs, bars, counters, high tops, low cocktail tables, coffee tables, bathroom sinks, toilet handles, etc. These tasks will be completed per the CDC and Miami-Dade County guidelines.
• Our bathrooms feature ample individual stalls. These areas will fall into our 30-minute cleaning guidelines and will be maintained and serviced by our cleaning specialists. Bathrooms are equipped with disinfectant soap, hand sanitizers, and disposable hand towels.

Serving Procedures

• Glassware, flatware, and tableware will be washed, disinfected, and steam cleaned before and throughout the event. Rolled up flatware and water glasses will be provided for each guest and presented individually at each place setting.
• Welcome drinks are freshly poured upon boarding in sanitized glassware. To curb the need for congregating at the bar or making long lines, our staff will be providing cocktail service to all guests, as well as handing out welcome drinks.
• All food and drinks will be handled, presented, and served to guests to minimize cross-contamination. Butler-passed hors d’oeuvres will no longer be passed. Instead they will be arranged as a station. All platters and food stations will be staffed with an attendant behind plexiglass who will be responsible for personally serving each guest.
• Our new and improved buffet techniques will feature plexiglass to protect the food while guests are served by a gloved attendant. Tables will be called one at a time to prevent crowding. Our existing procedures will ensure that our buffet is staffed to serve guests individually and erase the need for self-service. This measure will prevent serving utensils from coming into contact with any guests.
• Our bread, salad, coffee, and dessert will be served tableside, eliminating the need for self-service. Salt, pepper, and condiments will be individually packaged for each guest.
• If additional steps are required, we are happy to provide them as requested.

Summer Wind  is a beautifully appointed 91′ Striker Motor Yacht that is Coast Guard Inspected and certified for up to 65 passengers.

One of The Summer Wind’s most incredible features is the open-air sky deck. The top deck has bench seating for an informal dining experience, and the tables can be collapsed and quickly whisked away to make room for dancing and mingling. Not to mention, we built an expansive granite bar on the top deck, so a drink is never far away. The sky deck is complete with an awning for partial coverage from the elements and a great sound system that will enhance any small group yacht charter .
