St. Petersburg Power and Sailboat Show showcases hundreds of vessels
46th annual st. petersburg power and sailboat show.
FOX 13 got a tour of the largest boat, an 88-foot-long motor yacht. The boat show runs through Sunday.
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - While pirates invade the City of Tampa , boating enthusiasts can take part in a more peaceful boarding of vessels in St. Petersburg .
The St. Petersburg Power and Sailboat Show boasts more vessels than will be clogging the Tampa Bay harbor during the pirate invasion, and no one at the show will be screaming for beads.
"This year's boat show is one of our largest boat shows in a while," shared Nickolas Pantner. He's the Business Development Manager for Informa Markets. "We have over 280 boats in water, more on land. Probably a total of 400 boats combined."
The largest vessel by far is the Ocean Alexander 27R coming in at 88 feet 3/4 inches long.

For the pirates seeking bounty about this bayside beauty, the General Manager of Marine Max gave FOX 13 a tour.
"Welcome aboard the Ocean Alexander 27 R," said Collin Heimensen. "[There are] huge windows for lots of ambient light, really a beautiful space."
The yacht is designed to entertain and can be operated by a crew of three.
"It's a four stateroom yacht," explained Heimensen, "[It's] interesting, one of the staterooms is actually on deck, on the main deck, primary state room." He continued. "But this boat is unique because it has two primary staterooms, plus a VIP stateroom, a guest stateroom and another space that can be used for a gym or an office."
The quarters for the crew are below the man deck.

Another interesting part of this vessel is the amount of entertaining space that is available on the Flybridge.
"The Flybridge is very spacious," pointed out Heimensen. "This is a beautiful entertaining space, a big bar, three bar stools, a nice dining area, electric grill, Jacuzzi and a large sun lounge on the back."
And while pirates are having fun in Tampa, the Ocean Alexander 27R promises fun for the serious buyer, but brings lots of loot.
"This is typically for an experienced yachtsman, a business owner," admitted Heimensen.
It's available to see along with the other boats at the show all weekend long.
"There is from your smallest kayak to the biggest boat we have in the show," said Pantner.
A portion of all of the ticket sales goes to support Tampa Bay Watch and their efforts to maintain and restore Tampa Bay estuaries.

Boat show draws nearly 30,000 to St. Pete waterfront
Despite overcast skies and unusually cool temps for the Sunshine City, an estimated 25,000 to 30,000 people attended the 46 th annual St. Petersburg Power and Sailboat Show.
Billed as the Gulf Coast’s largest boat show , the event was held from Thursday, Jan. 18, through Sunday, Jan. 21, at the Mahaffey Theater Yacht Basin and Albert Whitted Park. Over 400 fishing and pleasure vessels lined Bayshore Drive while luxurious yachts moored along the docks. An expansive 40,000-square-foot tent housed a smorgasbord of marine gear, equipment and accessories.
Attendees enjoyed complimentary seminars, children’s fishing clinics and on-water boat training courses hosted by the Annapolis School of Seamanship and Progressive. Nickolas Pantner, business development manager for Informa Markets /U.S. Boat Shows, said boat sales were as brisk as Sunday morning’s temperatures.
“Even with the weather that we had, things went very well,” Pantner said. “From Thursday through Sunday, boats were sold at this show – a lot of boats.”
Attendees and exhibitors filled Bayshore Drive from Jan. 18 through Jan. 21.Informa operates what has become a St. Pete tradition for nearly five decades. New this year was a brokerage section for used boat sales.
Pantner said increased demand has forced him to “get creative” with the event’s layout. Informa added temporary docks and pilings to accommodate the influx of inventory.
Pantner noted that interest rates are still atypically high, at around 7%. However, he believes the combination of new and used boat sales put this year’s revenues on par with previous events .
Another new aspect for 2024 was a partnership with Tampa Bay Watch. Attendees could add a donation to the local organization with ticket purchases, and Pantner said the initiative was a success.
He also noted the boat show’s local economic impact. Pantner said nearly 60% of the hundreds of exhibitors traveled from outside Tampa Bay.
“They’re buying gas within the area; they’re getting a hotel,” he said. “They’re also buying food and supporting local restaurants. It adds up, little by little.”
Pantner explained that Informa also hired local laborers to help implement and disassemble the event’s extensive infrastructure. He said company staff were already in Miami preparing for the next boat show before St. Petersburg’s ended.
Informa collaborates with clients to strategically place docks around the yacht basin. Pantner said crews must then run electrical and water lines to each space. “The infrastructure is quite interesting,” he said.
Pantner said the lack of available land to house hundreds of boats and trailers also presents a challenge. He noted that the event is reaching its capacity along Bayshore Drive.
The event’s popularity is still a net positive, as Pantner said it annually introduces new companies to the area. He added that many don’t realize what the city has become until participating in the boat show.
Nickolas Pantner, business development manager for Informa Markets/U.S. Boat Shows, noted that the event annually attracts new people and companies to St. Pete. Photo by Mark Parker.
Informa and Pantner call Fort Lauderdale home, and he said staff has also noticed St. Petersburg’s yearly growth. “You have new hotels, new apartment buildings, new towers, new restaurants – things are looking pretty good over here,” he said. “If I could live here, I would.”
While temperatures began in the 40s Saturday, Pantner said sunny skies led to an “amazing” amount of foot traffic. He also noted that despite rainy conditions to start the four-day event, lines formed outside the gate each morning.
“It’s pretty rewarding when you put all your effort into it, and you see it all happen and the success of it,” Pantner added. “It’s a great feeling.”

EXCLUSIVE: U.S Coast Guard shows ABC7 how they search and rescue on their response boat
S T. PETERSBURG, Fla. (WWSB) - Within the last few months, U.S Coast Guard crews have rescued and searched for several missing boaters, and people stranded, in our Gulf waters.
On Tuesday, the crew stationed in St. Petersburg took ABC7 news on an exclusive ride along onboard their 45-foot response boat to show us how they conduct search and rescue missions.
They start with a call that comes from the command center, then after details about the missing are gathered, a plan of action is created.
After that, the crew on the water takes over, jumping into action fast.
They are responsible for over 1,700 nautical miles of the coast, spanning from parts of Alabama, all the way down to parts of the Everglades.
When they act, they do so with several other agencies, depending on the location of the situation.
Tyler Powers is one of the heroes we had the opportunity to speak with. He has saved over 30 lives.
“The ability to save one’s life is unmeasurable,” said Powers. “It’s why I keep showing up to work.”
When the Coast Guard crews head to the rescue, they go into dangerous water conditions that we’re told to stay out of.
“Anytime leaving the dock can be dangerous,” said Powers.
Tracy Mannes was working alongside Powers during the training session. She also discussed how when stress kicks in, you have to work with it, not against it.
“Its definitely adrenaline driven,” said Mannes. “We train to do this; we train in good conditions, and we train in bad conditions.”
While the crew has no problem saving your life, they ask that you protect yourself as much as possible.
Having a float plan is the best way to stay prepared and get help fast if something goes wrong on a boat day. You can find more information on what a float plan is and see a PDF version of the plan that you can fill out here .
They also recommend always letting someone know when you leave and when you plan to return.
They ask everyone to wear life jackets while on the water, and they suggest that you dress for the water temperature, not the air. That way if you go overboard the insulation will help you have a better chance for survival.
