Guide to Barcelona

A city that inspires artists, chef’s and discerning travellers the world over

Famed for its enchanting architecture, fabulous dining and bountiful culture, the seaside city of Barcelona is a superyacht stop-off you’ll never forget.

Barcelona’s location alone is idyllic, situated on the north-eastern coast of the Iberian Peninsula overlooking the blue of the Mediterranean Sea. It is watched over by the Serra de Collserola mountain range between the rivers Besòs and Llobregat with the towering 512 m (1,680 ft) high Tibidabo mountain providing an amazing backdrop as well as fantastic views over the city. If you need to escape the hustle and bustle of the city for a few hours then the peaks are engulfed by the beautiful Collserola Natural Park which is the biggest metropolitan park in the world.

As the capital of Catalonia and with colourful architectural treasures spanning more than 2,000 years, Barcelona is a city that needs no introduction but one where you can enjoy unlimited experiences. Magnificent temple columns allude to its ancient history while the winding lanes of its Gothic Quarter express its charismatic edge. Keep exploring and at every turn you’ll be greeted with the spectacular creations of the renowned Gaudi and his contemporaries, to make this a truly memorable yacht charter destination.

The beauty of Barcelona has long been an inspiration to artists the world over and it now hosts two museums dedicated to the works of Picasso and Joan Miró, both of whom fell in love with the city. Its masterpieces are not just confined to art and architecture however – the city’s gastronomic delights are just as celebrated and its restaurant scene is now one of the most talked about in the Mediterranean . From Galician seafood taverns, avant-garde Japanese restaurants, a full spectrum of fun and fine dining options will keep your time ashore packed full of flavour.

The city, close to the base of the Pyrenees, is large enough that it has its own underground railway network, by which you can hide from the fearsome summer heat as you explore the multitude of attractions at the surface.

Some highlights worth a visit:

  • Las Ramblas, a long pedestrianised street that is best explored in the evening while nibbling on tapas and sipping sangria. What you will see and find there will remain with you for times to come!
  • The Gaudi Monument, (Sagrada Familia) a cathedral that is so complex, construction is set to be completed in 2026, over 140 years since the first stone was laid!
  • The Platja (beach) from where you can watch the world go by as you sunbathe and drink in the atmosphere of this stunning city - one of many beautiful beaches you will find on a Barcelona yacht charter.
  • Parc Güell, a monumental garden where the architect Gaudi's mind went wild and is said to have 'perfected his style' - now a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
  • And of course for those on a Barcelona yacht charter especially, the Olympic Port. This was rebuilt ahead of the 1994 Olympics and is the largest of the seven marinas in the city where you may begin your sailing holiday.

This list is far from exhaustive! As you roam the city you will get the buzz for one that never really sleeps and there's always something going on. It is one of the most popular city destinations in Spain and you will soon see why. There's something for everyone, and everyone will soon be immersed in the parts you enjoy and may want to spend just a little more time there!

Explore Barcelona By Renting A Yacht

Barcelona is the gateway to the Costa Brava, and you can also island-hop the Balearic Islands from here.

The Mediterranean Sea coast of the 'Costa Brava' literally translates to 'Wild Coast', in a large part due to the sometimes fearsome north wind, the Tramontana that can get very feisty even in the summer. The further east you head the closer to the Pyrenees you are, and this is where the cold air falls from that creates the wind. It means you need to be ready to put a double reef in, though there is accurate forecasting that will inform you whether you may need to do so.

Heading east on your chartered yacht on a tour of the Costa Brava you can get to Cadaques and the spectacular Cap de Creus. Masters of modern art Salvador Dali and Picasso used to hang out in Cadaques for its scenery and clarity of light - the light caused by the Tramontana blasting all the rubbish out of the air! On such a trip, do pay a visit to Girona - the mediaeval capital of Catalonia and still a beautiful city with its old town and university today.

Barcelona is also a gateway to the Balearic Islands. Over a couple of days sailing you can head down the coast and then out to the islands of Ibiza, Mallorca and Menorca. These three islands are part of the same island chain but are very different to one another. Ibiza is for hippies, party people and families. Majorca's capital Palma is almost as good as Barcelona. Menorca is quieter than the other two islands but has plenty of unspoilt beauty none the less.

As ever, whether on a luxury yacht charter or bareboat charter the choice is down to you. Perhaps you could go on a couple of sailing holidays and explore firstly the east and then the south-west?

How To Get To Barcelona

There are two airports you will see advertised as Barcelona. Barcelona Airport itself is an hour's train ride from the city centre (thanks to security you must now change trains midway through the journey) but Girona-Barcelona also advertises as Barcelona - this is a two hour trip by bus from Barcelona. The flights and travel often work out significantly cheaper via Girona thanks to the popularity of Barcelona Airport itself.

Barcelona Airport

This is an international airport with airlines all over the world flying into it. It has its own train station so it makes sense to take a train to Barcelona Sants train station and then take a bus or taxi onto the marina.

Girona-Barcelona Airport

Girona-Barcelona Airport has airlines from across Europe serving it, and gets busy in the summer with charter flights.

Girona is a significant distance from Barcelona, and its name is a slick piece of advertising. Even with an added few hours to your overland journey from Girona to Barcelona however you will often find that the cost of travel is significantly cheaper to the main city.

Suggested Sailing Routes From Barcelona

Sailing from Barcelona on your boat rental you have two main choices of popular destinations - exploring the Costa Brava or the Balearic Islands by sailing boat or motorboat. Here we look at a week-long trip up to Cadaques and then a two week trip to the Balearic Islands.

7 Days - Cadaques and Cap de Creus: Cadaques is a charming harbour with water and air so clear you could forget this is the 21st Century. The art town is the halfway point of a trip where you can explore Sitges, Girona and the Bay of Roses as you go. The scenery of the Pyrenees falling into the sea here will astound you - but do be aware of the katabatibc winds that can fall from above like bombs! Definitely a route for the more experienced sailor on a bareboat charter...

14 Days - tour of the Balearic Islands: Over 14 days heading west from Barcelona this is an opportunity to visit the important city of Valencia further down the coast before heading offshore and on to the Balearic Islands. If you spend 2-3 days per Balearic island you will have time to take in the various sights and sounds of Ibiza, Majorca and Menorca in their riot of different vibes. The winds are gentler on this route as for the best part of the trip you are out of the way of the Tramontana and can enjoy some very good sailing conditions with little in the way of the feisty north wind bothering you.

Best Times To Hire A Yacht In Barcelona

The sailing season in Barcelona is best from May to October. The major party towns heat up to full frenzy in June to August, and so do the prices. It is very much down to what you want from a sailing holiday in the region - if partying all night is on the cards, the top DJs will hit the region in that time and you will have quite a memorable time. If the quiet life is what you seek, then do try to get out during term time - the sea is still warm in September and October, though the infamous Tramontana starts to be more frequent at this time of year, as it eases off in early May.

Sailing Weather In Barcelona

The Tramontana tends to build from September and eases away in May, though this can blow fiercely for several days at a time even in midsummer.

The NE breeze common to coastal Mediterranean France dominates the Costa Brava in summer, cool relief from the summer heat. It never really gets above 17 knots or so so there will be some boisterous sailing but never more than is fun. You will see more precipitation towards the beginning and end of the sailing season (May and October) but the temperatures rarely stray below 15-17 degrees during those times. In the height of summer (July/August) it isn't as hot as mainland Spain, though you will see the odd few days in the 30+ C range. For Northern Europeans and those from other cooler climates this makes for fantastic sailing!

What should I consider when hiring a Yacht or Boat?

The main points to consider are what is your budget, have you got the necessary sailing experience and qualifications to manage the boat if it's not going to have a skipper, whom you are taking sailing, where exactly you wish to go and what will the weather be like on the proposed dates of your trip.

What are the Marinas in Barcelona?

There are seven main marinas in Barcelona, with the two largest being Port Olimpic and Marina de Badalona. The five smaller are Marina Vela Barcelona, Port Forum, Reil Club Nautico de Barcelona, OneOcean Port Veil, and Reil Club Maritim de Barcelona

When are the best times to hire a boat in Barcelona?

The high season is in July and August. Locals flee the heat of the city and tourists replace them. Things get expensive and restaurants competitive. The city and sailing destinations nearby tend to relax a bit, become more friendly and cheaper outside of the peak season. If you can take a F7 gale from time to time (or certainly run for port safely) then it may make sense to go in May or September when the air is warm and the ports less busy.

Do you have to pay a deposit when hiring a Yacht in Barcelona?

You will typically pay 50% upfront on booking the yacht hire and the balance on arrival. You will either pay a security deposit with your credit card on departure or can get insurance covering damage in advance. In some cases (such as the recent Covid situation) charter companies may be more flexible but this depends on the individual charter companies themselves.

What happens if my Yacht breaks down?

If you are at sea and in danger, call MAYDAY on VHF Ch16 or ring the coast guard on your phone if you have reception. If you have a mechanical fault and can make it to or are on a mooring you will be able to phone a help line number given by the boat charter company.

Frequently asked questions

You will typically pay 50% up front on booking the yacht hire and the balance on arrival. You will either pay a security deposit with your credit card on departure or can get insurance covering damage in advance. In some cases (such as the recent Covid situation) charter companies may be more flexible but this depends on the individual charter companies themselves.

You should consider do you have the experience to handle the yacht charter or boat hire before you book and where do you want to go along with what the weather will be like. Bring warm weather and cool weather clothing if it looks like the weather can be cool as well as warm and remember at sea it can be cool on most evenings.

If you want to sail without a skipper then you will need relevant qualifications like RYA Day Skipper/International Certificate of Competence (ICC)/ASA 104 Bareboat certificate or the US Sailing Certificate. For small 'day boats' or if you choose to have a skippered on board your yacht charter you typically don't require licences.

Although there are several ports in Barcelona, the main yacht port is called Marina Port Vell and is located in the heart of the Barceloneta Area.

Barcelona is a cosmopolitan city and most of the people in restaurants or bars will understand you in English, although the official languages of the city are Catalan and Spanish. Most seasoned yacht crew are familiar with Barcelona due to how busy the port is for superyachts now. but if it is your first time coming here on a yacht, hopefully, this guide will help you plan your time ashore and help make provisioning a bit easier.

Uber does not operates in Barcelona. But taxis are the way to go here. They are very cheap and provide an excellent service. Taxis in Barcelona are very economic as well you can use an app for taxis to book yours. The app is called FREE NOW and can be downloaded in Android or Iphone.

You can have a city tour for 20 EUR for cab, or just go to the other side of the city for less than 10 EUR. Replacing Uber is Cabify, the Spanish version of Uber, but is more expensive than regular taxis. You can download the app and book your Cabify too both in Android or Iphone.

You can purchase a Metro/bus/train ticket for aprox 12 EUR with 10 trips (this ticket is personal) or 1 single bus/metro ride will be 2,10 EUR.

Taxis will cost between 5 EUR to max 20 EUR around the city. Some well-recommended apps to download on your phone when in Barcelona are REBY or MOVO – both offering electric scooter or bikes rental by the minute – this is the ultimate way of visiting the city: fast, fun and cheap!

An Airport ride from the port takes about 30 minutes and with a taxi it would cost 35/40 EUR.

Safety warning for Barcelona yacht crew

We know how a boozy night out can sometimes end in self afflicted tears with crew conflicts and drama. But it’s worth noting how dangerous it can be in the city of Barcelona for yacht crew. Yachties are often targetted by muggers and those looking to make a quick buck from your misguided attention.

Walking home after dark alone should especially be avoided as a lone female near MB92. We have many first-hand accounts of petty and very serious crimes against yacht crew. Violent muggings are common enough, with at least one yacht crew member losing their life to these people in recent years. Please remain cautious in the area and do not make obvious displays of wealth when walking around at night.

The local Barceloneta police station can do little to assist you.

Yacht & Catamaran Charter in Barcelona, Spain

We can help you find the perfect yacht or catamaran to sail from Barcelona!

Sailing from Barcelona, Spain for PlainSailing.com yacht and catamaran charter

Sailing from Barcelona

Barcelona is a city which is famous for football, the arts and las ramblas market – but it’s also a fantastic place to sail - the wonderful Catalan coastline is best explored by your own private yacht or catamaran. People have been sailing here for centuries, so you’ll find castles, palaces, cathedrals, small fishing villages, as well as fine beaches and tourist attractions – and of course, majestic Barcelona.

On a multi-week charter, you could hop over to the Balearic islands, but if you’ve only got a week then there’s already an agonising choice of sailing south to historic Tarragona, once the capital of the Roman empire, or north to the Roses and the castles and forts built for keeping the French and Italians (amongst others) at bay. We can help you find and book your ideal yacht or catamaran, with one of our trusted Charter Partners - just get in touch or search in the pink box with live prices and availability !

Must See if you're Sailing from Barcelona

Suggested sailing itinerary, wind & weather conditions, marina details, sample prices   -   barcelona sailing itinerary  -   wind & weather  -   marina details, 6-day sailing itinerary from barcelona.

Nestled in the heart of the popular Catalan coast, Barcelona is a brilliant place to sail from - with castles and great cathedrals contrasted by small fishing villages, and, of course, the fine beaches, waterparks and other attractions that draw millions of tourists to this coastline each year. There’s virtually guaranteed sunshine, largely reliable winds, very friendly locals and some of the finest food on the planet – the more Tapas you try, the more you’ll get hooked!

Barcelona - 6 day Sailing itinerary

It’s a six-day itinerary because you normally won’t get access to the boat until Saturday afternoon, and after spending time getting provisions in and getting familiar with the boat, you’ll likely only be able to set sail on Sunday morning. The boat also needs to be back in Barcelona on Friday evening (but you can stay on-board overnight and then check-out and disembark on Saturday morning) – so it’s a six day tour.

Castelldefels

Nose out of the marina and then we’re heading South – we’re sailing past Barcelona city centre, so don’t head too far out to sea if you want a good view of Las Ramblas, then we’re sailing onwards South, reaching across the prevailing summer northerly winds to the Castelldefells. It’s possible to do it in one tack, but as it’s the first day, you may as well get everyone well versed in trimming the sail.

As the name suggests, there’s a castle on the highest point here which dates back over a millennium (and it was built on the site of an even older Roman castle), which helped to defend Catalonia from Arab and Barbary invaders, amongst others. More recently, they built an ‘Olympic canal’ here to host the rowing events of the 1992 Barcelona Olympics, and it is now best known for the 5km of gorgeous sandy beach (which you will sail past) and for being the home of the great and good of Barcelona - including Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez – so watch out for them if you amble around town! There’s a great range of shops, bars and restaurants, plus beaches and castles to explore – enjoy!

Segur de Calafel

Today’s destination is Segur de Calafell, a suburb of the pretty town of Calafell, which is another town with a splendid beach, an ancient castle and that is reasonably popular with tourists. As well as being one of the best beaches in Spain, this beach claims to be good for you on health grounds because the local sand means that there is five-times as much iodine in the sea-water here than normal.

But there’s also more high-brow attractions on offer - the Ciutadella Iberica is a fascinating excavation of the village that was here in 600 BC (and just a short walk from the marina), and the Casa Barral museum celebrates the life works of Carlos Barral, who was, as I’m sure you already knew, one of Spain’s finest poets.

Tarragona

The Romans helped transform ‘‘Tarraco’ (as they called it) into the wealthiest and most opulent city in Spain, and there was a time when Caesar Augustus himself used to come here for winter, bringing the might and powers of the empire with him. Similar to Rome, the whole town is like a giant museum, with fine buildings and churches in every direction around the old town – so it is worth a stroll around.

If all of the above have you rolling your eyes, then don’t worry, because Tarragona also has something for you – notably, Spain’s biggest theme park, PortAventura, is located here (alongside Ferrari-land and the PortAventura Aquatic park), and there’s obviously also plenty of great beaches to lay down on.

Torredembarra

Torredembarra is largely overlooked by tourists because it is so close to Tarragona, but it has the same Roman history, charming cobbled streets and an old town with magnificent architecture - it would be lauded if it was anywhere else in the world. There’s also fantastic beaches, and Torredembarra is one of the world’s top kite-surfing destinations.

And, of course, there is the tallest lighthouse in Catalonia, which is also the newest lighthouse in Spain (it went live on January 1st 2000), which has a splendid viewing platform at the top of it (if you can manage the 217 steps).

Sitges

But that’s not all – their local dishes of xato (seafood salad) and ‘Sitges-style paella’ have been exported across Spain and are certainly worth sampling. There’s the locally grown Malvasia wine, or, if you prefer something stronger, Sitges is the birthplace of a certain Mr Bacardi who emigrated to Cuba in 1830 and set up a massive rum empire – Sitges is proud enough of him to give him his own museum.

You can also go for a hike on the mountainous Garraf Massif, gape in wonder at the magnificent Church of Sant Bartomeu i Santa Tecla (which you should also be able to see from the sea), or hit the beach – incidentally, three of the 17 beaches here are nudist beaches.

Barcelona

You’ll pass the Garraf massif, Castelldefels, Barcelona airport and then Barcelona city centre and then we’re heading back into the marina. Don’t forget you’ll need to fill up the fuel tanks on your way back into the marina, before mooring the boat up one last time. You can stay on her overnight before disembarking tomorrow morning. If you got the crew and the boat around safely, then well done skipper, and you have earned your ‘Sailing in Spain’ badge.

If you haven’t explored Barcelona itself yet, then it really is a wonderful city, which is why over 20 million tourists head here each year. There’s the Sagrada Familia cathedral, the Olympic parks, or a cable car (Teleferic) which goes across the bay, giving outstanding views of the city. You simply have to wander down Las Ramblas, and there’s plenty of trendy bars to check out in the ‘Gothic quarter’, which is the near-side of the city-centre to the marina.

Hopefully you have all enjoyed the trip, and the crew have been a joy to be around. As you’re reminiscing about this voyage over some final tapas, maybe you’ll already be thinking about where to sail next year - come and visit us at PlainSailing.com once you have a plan! Have a safe trip home, and hopefully see you online soon! :)

Sailing Conditions

Spain Sailing - Wind Conditions

Winds tend to be stronger during spring and autumn, when they tend to arrive from the South or South-west, but as the summer kicks in, the winds swing around so that the prevailing summer winds come from the North, before rushing their way East across the Mediterranean to hit sails on boats in Turkey.

This makes sailing at the tail-ends of the season a little more exciting, though thankfully it is rare for the wind to be too fierce.

In winter, winds are a bit more unpredictable, and you could be hit by cold winds rolling down from the Pyrenees, or warm winds from Northern Africa – though most weather systems tend to pass over in a few days, and the forecasting in the Med is usually very reliable so you shouldn't be taken by surprise!

Marina Details - Port Olimpic, Barcelona

Barcelona is a wonderful city, and the ideal place to spend a day or two at the start or end of the holiday - if you're looking for places to stay on land in the area, then we recommend Hotel Santa Marta , which is ideally located between the marina and Las Ramblas.

Port Olimpic hosted the sailing events for the 1992 Olympics. After years of being unloved, it was brought back under the control of the Local Government and has since been refurbished into a modern and comfortable marina, next to Barceloneta beach, and within a short walk of the city centre.

Barcelona, spain.

Barcelona is a true global city of breathtaking architecture, countless world-class museums, bustling markets, colorful parks and high-end fashion. This town is big but perfectly discoverable on foot. Imposing Montjuïc Castle is a good starting point for a stunning panorama of the city, and the renowned Joan Miró museum and Catalonian national art museum are also in the area. One might fill an entire day strolling amidst the 12th- and 13th-century architecture of the Gothic Quarter and then checking out the extensive collection of the Museu Picasso. But Barcelona may be most renowned for the unmistakable imprint made on the city by architect Antoní Gaudi, from the spectacular unfinished church of La Sagrada Família to the whimsical Park Güell. More of his work can be found along tree-lined La Rambla, one of the world’s most famous promenades and the perfect place to experience the striking architecture, designer shopping and delicious tapas of the city.

Read on to get some top tips on what to see and do in the area from the team at our Ancasta office in Barcelona …

Discover Barcelona

Sandy beaches.

As a coastal city, Barcelona boasts beautiful sandy beaches that stretch for miles. With direct access from the city, you can quickly escape the hustle and bustle for a relaxing walk along the shoreline, or to take a dip in the clear blue waters of the Balearic Sea. During summer, the main beaches of Barcelonenta and Sant Miguel are often buzzing with lots of beach-goers enjoying the busy waterside tapas bars and seafood restaurants, whilst the more northern beaches of Nova Icària or Bogatell bear a quieter and more relaxed atmosphere.

Gaudi Architecture

Barcelona is famed for its abundance of buildings designed by the famous Spanish architect Antoni Gaudi. Unique in style, Gaudi’s designs were often influenced by forms of nature and thus feature plenty of waves, curves and plenty of colour. Whilst there are many spectacular Gaudi buildings worth seeing throughout the city, a must-see destination is Park Güell. Park Güell presents an extraordinary and varied display of Gaudi’s work with ornate mosaic walls and ceilings, twisting turrets and magnificent ironwork.

Designer Shopping

Style is big in Barcelona and if you like shopping, there are many luxury brands to indulge in and exclusive boutiques to be discovered. From the grand Passeig de Gracia with its high fashion brands such as Louis Vuitton, Gucci and Chanel, to the eclectic boutiques of the old town in the Born Cultural Centre and the smaller retailers on Carrer Major de Sarrià, there is something for all tastes and budgets.

First Class Cuisine

Well known for its delicious array of tapas, fruity sangria and sparkling Cava, the Catalan region offers ample traditional fare, as well as an incredible mix of international dishes lovingly created from fresh, locally sourced ingredients. It is said that Catalonia is the area with the most Micheln stars in Spain, so look forward to sampling some of the very best in Spanish cuisine in and around this food loving city.

Magnificent Mountains

Just a few hours drive north west of Barcelona you’ll find the Pyrenees. This incredible mountain range not only offers superb scenery and views, but also boasts miles of picturesque hiking trails in the summer and a wide choice of snowsport resorts come the winter months. The Pyrenees are popular with locals who want to escape to the mountains for a short break or long weekend, and provide a great alternative activity for boat owners based in the city if the weather isn’t suitable for getting out on the water.

Explore the Catalan Coast

Stick to the mainland and head north east to enjoy the fabulous rugged coastline of Costa Brava with some of the best beaches in Europe and little bays dotted all along its length from the town of Blanes, right up to the French border. You’ll be dazzled by the breathtaking landscapes, and, with one of the highest concentrations of Michelin-starred chefs in Spain, this stretch of coast is a gastronomic delight too.

The municipality of Begur lies about halfway up the Costa Brava coastline and is popular for its pretty beaches, fine cuisine and historic charm. The town of Begur is well known for its classy restaurants and boutique shops, and there is a myriad of charming cobbled streets and dainty alleyways to explore.

Sa Riera is a pretty little fishing village close to the town of Begur. Set amongst pine covered cliffs, this secluded cove boasts a beautiful sandy beach and clear blue turquoise waters making it an excellent spot for swimming and snorkelling. Onshore you will find a small selection of good restaurants and cafes offering tantalizing cuisine and local wines. Although Sa Riera can be popular in the summer months, it has remained relatively undeveloped and, as such, has retained its historic charm and magical allure.

Translated as ‘blue waters,’ Aiguablava is testimony to its name. A glistening golden beach with clear blue shallow waters, this is wonderful spot in which to relax and grab a spot to eat in one of the waterside restaurants. Spend a lazy afternoon bathing in the sun or dive beneath the surface for some spectacular snorkelling in and around the bay.  Across from Aiguablava beach you’ll find the sheltered little harbour of Fornells brimming with traditional fishing boats. Populated by whitewashed cottages with terracotta roofs, it a wonderful rustic town to explore on foot.

Cap de Creus

The magnificent Cap de Creus is a peninsula located at the far northeast point of Catalonia and just 25km from the French border. The peninsula is characterised by its baren and wind beaten cliffs emblazoned with jagged creeks of deep blue water. Although, at times, the winds can be strong, come here in fair weather and you’ll be treated to magnificent scenery, secluded calas and spacious anchorages.

Sometimes referred to as the ‘Pearl of the Costa Brava,’ Cadaqués has been home to many famous artists and writers over the years including Salvador Dali, Picasso, Matisse and Duchamp, amongst others. As such, Cadaqués has a chic yet bohemian air about it and is popular with creatives. The beautiful whitewashed buildings line the hillside and a hike up the meandering cobbled streets will lead you to sweeping views of the bay. The open bay itself is quite large and there are plenty of little craggy inlets to explore by dinghy. Alternatively, stay ashore and enjoy a glass of wine and traditional Spanish cuisine in one of the many high quality waterside restaurants lining the quay.

El Port de la Selva

A picturesque fishing village nestled in a natural bay, shielded by the surrounding mountains, El Port de la Selva has plenty to offer in the way of pristine beaches and cultural attractions, as well as windsurfing, stand up paddleboarding and diving. Explore the maze of little cobbled streets and savour the delicious local cuisine, or, for a bit of relaxation, head to the horseshoe shaped beach of Cala Tamariu. Situated in a secluded bay of glistening crystal clear turquoise water, Tamariu is home to a beautiful golden sandy beach with a cluster of restaurants and cafes by the watersedge.

Spain seizes Russian oligarch's yacht in Barcelona

MADRID (Reuters) - Spain has temporarily seized a Russian oligarch's $140 million yacht in Barcelona, the country said on Monday, as two sources said the vessel belonged to the head of Russian state conglomerate Rostec, an ally of Russian President Vladimir Putin.

"Today we seized - the technical term is provisionally immobilised - a yacht belonging to one of the principal oligarchs," Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez said on La Sexta television. "We are talking about a yacht that we estimate is worth $140 million."

"There will be more," he added, without elaborating. Monitoring site Marine Traffic has said that yachts linked to two other oligarchs who are not yet sanctioned are also docked in Barcelona.

The 85-meter (279-foot) superyacht Valerie belongs to Sergei Chemezov, a former KGB officer who heads state conglomerate Rostec, two sources said.

Sailing under the flag of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, the vessel is registered to Chemezov's stepdaughter, Anastasia Ignatova, through a British Virgin Islands company, according to a 2021 article published in the Pandora Papers information leak.

The West has sanctioned Russian billionaires, frozen state assets and cut off much of the Russian corporate sector from the global economy since Russia's invasion of Ukraine on Feb. 24.

Chemezov was sanctioned by the United States in 2014 and Britain in 2020 over Russia's annexation of Crimea and was named in sanctions lists this month by the United States and Australia. The U.S. sanctions also targeted Chemezov's stepdaughter as well as his wife and son.

He was not named in the latest European list of sanctioned Russian figures but the EU imposed measures against him in 2014. A fourth package of EU sanctions against Russia is due to be unveiled in the coming days.

The yacht has been in Barcelona since Feb 9, according to Marine Traffic, and was until Monday under repair at Barcelona's shipyard MB92.

The yacht will remain under detention while Spanish authorities confirm its ownership and whether they feature on any list of sanctions targets, a government source said.

Chemezov told staff in a message shared with Reuters this week that Russia, which describes its actions in Ukraine as a "special military operation" to safeguard domestic security, would emerge "victorious" despite the sanctions.

Barcelona, the Port Vell and the city

Billionaire superyachts cast a shadow over Barcelona's traditional barrios

The world's largest private yacht looms over the old port of Barcelona – its six-deck, 163m profile offering proof of the love of Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich for a city he will visit again this week as his football team, Chelsea, tries to secure a place in the Champions League final.

But the superyacht, equipped with its own mini-submarine and anti-paparazzi shield, is a symbol of what neighbours in the traditional fishermen's neighbourhood of La Barceloneta fear will bring about the demise of one of the few city centre barrios to have maintained its traditional working-class character. Old Barcelona is under threat. A British private investment fund has taken control of much of the port area and has asked for an extended licence so that it can turn the Marina Port Vell into the Mediterranean's prime home for superyachts. Sources close to the group said it wanted the licence to run until 2036.

The Mayfair-based Salamanca Group intends to make the marina home to yachts up to 180 metres long, bringing the planet's growing club of mega-rich to a marina that it says "dominates the heart of Barcelona". But Barceloneta residents say the boats will dwarf the neighbourhood's famously narrow, four- or five-storey blocks of flats, where working-class families live in tiny homes and colourful outdoor washing lines leave the neighbourhood's laundry on public display.

"I've lived here all my life and the barrio has a special identity, precisely because so many working-class people have always lived here," said 68-year-old pensioner Antonio García, of the L'Ostia neighbourhood group. "But this will price us out, turning the port into a place only for the very rich and changing things for ever."

Neighbours fear that a huge wall may go up around part of the port to ensure the privacy of a handful of wealthy people, creating a fortress-like billionaires' ghetto on their doorstep. Protesters have already taken to Barceloneta's narrow streets, demanding that speculators be kept away from an area renowned for its cheap seafood restaurants and proximity to Barcelona's colourful urban beach.

"This will make it even more touristy and will see us expelled from our own barrio. We want it as it has always been, a real community of working-class people with roots right here," said García.

Most of Barcelona's fishing fleet disappeared years ago, but the area also had factories and most people worked in manufacturing. Barceloneta was also a centre of popular culture, with the city's own version of the rumba dance emerging here. The rundown area was partially redeveloped, along with the old port, for the 1992 Olympics, but it survived the gentrification of other parts of the old town. "The flats here are too small for the wealthier people from around Europe who have moved into other parts of the city," explained García. "That has saved us so far, but now people are buying them up to rent out as holiday apartments."

Salamanca took over the marina in 2010. The company is run by founder Martin Bellamy, a former army officer. Last year it claimed that work on the marina would be completed this autumn. But a city hall spokeswoman said that only after Salamanca had received an extended licence from the Spanish government would Barcelona's authorities be able to review the project and decide whether to hand out its own permits. "This will have a landscape impact on Barcelona and so will have to be studied closely," said Rosa Díaz. "The city hall approves in principle of a large investment that might generate jobs and bring wealth, but it is not going to allow them to do whatever they like. And, of course, it will consult the neighbours."

Salamanca's Barcelona outpost declined to give figures for the amount of money it wants to invest. Nor would it respond publicly to the concerns of people in La Barceloneta.

Locals say some smaller boat owners, including those who live on their boats, are already being told they must leave the marina. A source close to Salamanca said this was because repair work had already started. Boat owners were being offered berths at cut-rate prices in nearby marinas, as well as a place on the waiting list to get back once work was finished.

Among possible solutions for multi-millionaires seeking privacy were temporary screens covering a glass or metal fence around part of the marina.

The huge project comes as Barcelona seeks to shed its reputation for cheap, drunken, stag-party tourism, with a recent law cracking down on street prostitutes in places such as the Las Ramblas boulevard.

Abramovich has denied rumours that he is a shareholder in a Barcelona refit and repair yard, MB92, that lies beside the marina and also plans to expand its facilities for superyachts.

The Marina Port Vell is not the only modernisation project in town. Barcelona is also competing with Madrid for the Eurovegas complex, a vast collection of hotels, casinos and conference centres that the Las Vegas-based gambling billionaire Sheldon Adelson wants to build in Spain .

10 Unique Things to Do in Barcelona

Barcelona, the jewel of the Mediterranean, is a city that embodies the spirit of Spain…

Yacht rental in Barcelona

Barcelona is the capital of the province of Catalonia. It is located in a uniquely picturesque area south of the Pyrenees, on the border with France, next to the Mediterranean coast. Tourists from all over the world come here to spend at least a few days on an unforgettable trip. Renting a boat in Barcelona is one of the most effective ways to discover the Costa del Maresme or Costa Brava in all its splendor, get great pleasure and enjoy your holiday in this unusual and original place.

The best time to travel starts in the first days of May and ends in the last days of October. This is the most favorable season when the sun shines around the clock in Barcelona and there is almost no rain. The only thing that can overshadow the rental of a boat in Barcelona during the high season is the huge crowds of tourists. They are everywhere — on the streets of the city, on the beaches, in restaurants, in amusement parks…

However, there is a proven way to relax in privacy, and avoid crowds — hiring a boat. It will allow you to visit incredibly beautiful deserted bays and beaches, which can only be reached by water. This is only possible if you book the boat in advance. If you take care of this in advance, even before the start of the high season, you can choose a boat at a lower price from a large range of unoccupied options for the desired date and time.

Boat rental services in Barcelona by the hour will be provided by our company, and our experienced captains with their friendly team will do their best to make your vacation unforgettable. They are well-versed in the local area, so they will select the best routes, where nature is of indescribable beauty. Fuel is included in the cost of the cruise.

Do you want to book a boat for rent near you — from the place where you stayed in a hotel or rented temporary accommodation? We will select for you the best option from the many different yachts that are waiting for their passengers (from 2 to 250 people) in popular ports and marinas throughout Barcelona:

  • Port Olympic
  • Reil Club Maritim de Barcelona
  • Marina Port Vell
  • Real Club Nautico de Barcelona
  • Marina Vela Barcelona

Boat rental in Barcelona is paid by the hour. The most popular trip duration is 2-3 hours, but if you wish, you can hire a boat for the whole day and spend it on board from the first minutes of sunrise to sunset.

What events are suitable for renting a boat?

Traditionally, a boat for rent in Barcelona is rented out for any private, corporate, and business events. These services are in demand not only among tourists but also among the local population:

  • romantic walks along the sea coast with a photo session
  • family celebrations
  • friendly parties
  • stag parties
  • bachelorette parties
  • celebrating birthdays and anniversaries
  • original dates, sunrises-sunsets
  • wedding banquets
  • incendiary parties on board
  • intimate candlelit dinners
  • business meetings and corporate parties
  • team building and training
  • wedding photo shoots
  • yachting master classes
  • holding corporate regattas

Boat rental

If you hire a boat for 2 hours, you will have time to enjoy the views of the streets of Barcelona and its monuments, sailing through the oldest quarter, Barceloneta, and plunge into the Spanish sea.

A 4-hour boat rental in Barcelona will provide more opportunities — this will allow you to visit the famous Montgat beach, and swim in clean and clear water.

For an 8-hour boat trip, we recommend visiting the most outstanding and colorful places near Barcelona, such as::

  • Arenys de Mar
  • Castelldefels
  • Premia de Mar

During the break between sightseeing of the beauty of the port, you can taste specialties of Spanish cuisine in restaurants to continue this wonderful walk with renewed vigor. The length of its route and the distance from the coast depends on the type of boat. If you want to take a look at the world-famous resort of Sitges at least with one eye or walk along the chic Mediterranean coast of the Costa Brava, after visiting the progressive Blanes, hire a yacht or a motorboat — and you won’t regret it.

What services does our company offer besides yacht rentals?

To make your vacation on a yacht bright, eventful, and unforgettable, in addition to renting boats in Barcelona , our company provides the following services:

  • catering — booking food on board
  • photo and video filming
  • organization of entertainment on the water on a banana, wakeboard, flyboard, jet ski
  • decorating both the yacht itself and the deck with flowers, balls, and inscriptions, as well as its interior spaces — kitchens, cabins, halls
  • guided tours of the outstanding historical sites of Barcelona
  • host of events
  • DJ accompaniment of discos
  • invitation of popular artists for live performances
  • gift certificates for walks along the coast

Rent a boat

The ideal value, and money. The cost of their rental varies depending on the size of the yachts, the year of manufacture, and the popularity of the brand manufacturer, and is 100-350 euros/1 hour. The maximum capacity is up to 11 passengers.

Motor yachts

The rental price — 450-1200 euros/1 hour — is higher than other types of yachts. This is due to higher fuel consumption. However, this price justifies itself:

  • speed of movement, due to which visiting many places takes very little time;
  • level of comfort and a sense of luxury, because motor yachts have more space and more amenities.

The maximum passenger capacity is 20 guests.

The cost of renting catamarans is usually higher than classic sailing yachts, but cheaper than motor yachts, which is 250-550 euros/1 hour.

Depending on the dimensions, they can comfortably accommodate from 6 to 150 passengers on board.

Due to the stability of the water in any weather, catamaran trips are well tolerated even by those people who suffer from seasickness, and those who are constantly seasick on public transport.

This is a budget option for small companies of up to 9 people, with a rental price range of 100-350 euros/1 hour. In most cases, motorboats are rented by lovers of fishing, outdoor activities, and racing.

In the city of Barcelona, you can rent the following types of motor boats: speed boats with various toys and water activities, boats without a license, and luxury high-speed models.

Atletico Madrid v Barcelona - La Liga

Different kind of workout - FC Barcelona Wednesday brought the last training session of the week at FC Barcelona. With so many players away on international duty, Xavi Hernández had to come up with something different.

Lamine Yamal: 'I want to continue enjoying wearing the Barça shirt' - FC Barcelona Remember the name. Lamine Yamal. The La Masia product is still only 16 years of age and this season he has brought the joy of youth to the first team, and consequently, to all Barça fans.

The international agenda for the FC Barcelona players - FC Barcelona The last international break before the European Championship and Copa America is upon us, with 13 senior squad members plus Barça Atlètic's Mikayil Faye and Jaume Cuéllar all playing full internationals and several other involved in youth internationals. Here's the go-to list of all the different games coming up over the next few days.

Brann 1-2 Barcelona: Holders seal narrow first-leg win - UEFA Salma Paralluelo's sixth goal of this season's UEFA Women's Champions League helped the reigning champions edge out a brave Brann display in the first leg of their quarter-final in Norway.

Barcelona counting on veteran Sergi Roberto for next season despite lack of contract negotiations - Football España Sergi Roberto is out of contract at Barcelona in the summer, and his future has been up for debate over the last few months. It seemed certain that he would stay on for at least another 12 months, but following the announcement that Xavi Hernandez is stepping down at the end of the season, it threw the 32-year-old’s future into doubt.

"If he wants to renew, he will renew" - Barcelona outline clear stance on Ronald Araujo - Football España Ronald Araujo has been the subject of transfer speculation over the last few months, with Bayern Munich having been very interested in signing the Uruguayan defender. However, Barcelona have shown no signs of wanting to sell one of their captains and most important players.

Barcelona in talks with third kit manufacturer as Puma and Nike battle for sponsor deal - Football España The battle for sponsorship of Barcelona’s kit in the coming years has been framed as a straight battle between Nike and Puma, which will be heavily dependent on how much money the Blaugrana can earn, as they try to maximise their revenue sources. However there is at least a third brand on the scene too.

Barcelona have four-man shortlist for pivot role this summer - report - Football España Barcelona will look for a deep-lying midfielder this summer in order to address the gaping hole left by Sergio Busquets which is still being felt in Can Barca. Danish central defender Andreas Christensen has been called on in recent weeks in order to held stem the flow of chances being conceded, but it very much looks like a temporary solution.

Fc barcelona linked to ‘slovenian haaland’, reports mundo deportivo.

FC Barcelona is being linked to the 'Slovenian Haaland' Benjamin Sesko.

FC Barcelona is being linked to the possible signing of a figure dubbed the 'Slovenian Haaland' in Benjamin Sesko, as explained by Mundo Deportivo .

The 20-year-old is already well known in the Bundesliga after producing a breakout season for RB Leipzig that has seen him score 11 goals and provide two assists in all competitions.

In the past few weeks, he then came to wider attention for his performances against Barca's bitter rivals Real Madrid in the Champions League.

The German outfit didn't manage to make it to the quarterfinals, to meet a team that Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti later described as "one of the best" in Europe in Manchester City, but it was felt by many that it had the better of the Spanish giants over the two legs despite the tight 2-1 aggregate loss.

One of the factors that sees Sesko compared to Haaland is that he passed through the Norwegian's old club Salzburg.

The Austrians bought him for a bargain $2.7 million (€2.5 million), and then transferred him to the Bundesliga when Leipzig paid almost 10 times that amount to secure his services for $26 million (€24 million).

Yet there is also his imposing height of 1.96 meters and strength in the box from close quarters akin to Haaland's.

Any interested party will have to double what Leipzig paid for him considering his $54 million (€50 million) release clause according to Fichajes via Mundo Deportivo, which also mentions previous links made between Barca and Sesko by British newspaper The Daily Mirror .

New Gmail Security Rules You Have 14 Days To Comply Google Says

Nyt strands hints spangram and answers for wednesday march 20, ranked the 20 happiest countries in the world in 2024 according to a new report.

The Daily Mirror listed Barca as one club that could be keen on signing Sesko alongside Real Madrid, AC Milan, Chelsea and Arsenal.

Out of those clubs, it is the Catalans who would perhaps encounter the most difficulties raising that kind of money considering their financial difficulties.

It is widely believed that Barca needs to make big player sales to head to the transfer market this summer and navigate Financial Fair Play limits.

The potential arrival of a figure such as Sesko could be bad news for Vitor Roque and Marc Guiu.

The pair currently provides back up to the aging Robert Lewandowski, and they probably imagine themselves as his successor when the Pole, 35, has moved on.

Even if Sesko or another striker was bought, however, Vitor Roque can also play on the wing where he is often found when given minutes by current head coach Xavi Hernandez.

MADRID (AP) — Atletico Madrid fans burned a João Félix jersey before their team’s match against Barcelona. They also vandalized a plaque with his name and insulted the player outside the Metropolitano Stadium.

But when the match started, the Portugal forward answered those fans on the field.

Félix struck against his former club again on Sunday, scoring the opening goal in Barcelona’s 3-0 win over Atletico Madrid in the Spanish league.

Robert Lewandowski and Fermín López also scored for Barcelona, which moved to second place with its fifth straight league victory over Atletico.

Félix had scored the winner in the Catalan club’s 1-0 win in the league in December. The Portugal international is playing on loan from Atletico after falling out with the club last season.

Félix was loudly jeered by the Atletico fans at the Metropolitano Stadium when he was replaced in the 77th. The forward arrived at Atletico for 120 million euros (now $130 million) in 2019 but never fully met the high expectations that came with his signing.

Félix opened the scoring from the middle of the area after a pass by Lewandowski in the 38th minute, becoming the first Barcelona player to score in both matches against Atletico in a single league season since Lionel Messi in 2019-20.

Lewandowski added to the lead in a breakaway after Atletico midfielder Rodrigo De Paul gave away possession with a bad pass early in the second half, and the Poland striker set up López’s header for Barcelona’s third goal in the 65th.

“Certainly it was our most complete match,” Barcelona coach Xavi Hernández said.

Atletico defender Nahuel Molina was sent off in stoppage time for a foul on Vitor Roque to stop a breakaway. Xavi was sent off before halftime for protesting.

It was Atletico’s first league loss at the Metropolitano Stadium since January 2023 — also 1-0 against Barcelona. It was also Atletico’s worse loss at home in any competition.

“They were better than us today,” Atletico coach Diego Simeone said.

The win added to Barcelona’s momentum after it eliminated Napoli in the Champions League on Tuesday to make it to the tournament’s quarterfinals for the first time in four years.

Unbeaten in eight league matches, Barcelona moved two points ahead of third-place Girona, which lost 1-0 at Getafe on Saturday. Barcelona is eight points behind leader Real Madrid, which won 4-2 at Osasuna on Saturday.

Atletico eliminated Inter Milan in the round of 16 of the Champions League at the Metropolitano on Wednesday, but it has lost six of its last 10 matches across all competitions, with only three wins in that streak.

Simeone’s team dropped out of the Champions League places with the loss on Sunday. It is one point behind fourth-place Athletic Bilbao, which won 2-0 against Alaves on Saturday.

ALMERIA ENDS WINLESS STREAK

Almeria’s winless streak in the Spanish league is finally over.

The last-place team from southern Spain beat Las Palmas 1-0 to pick up its first win after going 28 consecutive games without a victory in the league this season, the most ever by any team.

Almeria now has one win, 10 draws and 18 defeats.

Léo Baptistão scored in the 14th minute to give Almeria the win in the debut of coach Pepe Mel.

“We snapped a historic streak,” said Mel, who was hired this week to replace Gaizka Garitano. “This is the path we must stay on for these last nine finals.”

Almeria is 14 points from safety with nine matches remaining. The Saudi-owned club had drawn four of its last five league matches.

Baptistão scored from close range after a pass from Largie Ramazani following a breakaway. The goal was only one of the two shots on target by Almeria.

“It’s a relief,” Baptistão said. “We deserved to have won by now. We have to keep believing.”

Las Palmas, winless in five consecutive league matches, stayed in 11th place.

Rayo Vallecano ended a 10-match winless streak in all competitions with a 2-0 win over seventh-place Real Betis.

Florian Lejeune and Sergio Camello scored a goal each for Rayo, which moved to 15th place.

It was the third consecutive loss for Betis, which won only once in its last seven games across all tournaments.

CELTA RALLIES

Celta Vigo, the first team outside the relegation zone, rallied late to win 2-1 at Sevilla and opened a five-point gap on 18th-place Cadiz.

Carles Pérez scored for Celta in the 72nd and Jorgen Strand Larsen in the 78th after the hosts had taken the lead with an 18th-minute goal by Youssef En-Nesyri.

Sevilla, winless in four of its last five league matches, stayed 16th. It’s one point ahead of Celta.

VILLARREAL TOPS VALENCIA

Villareal beat Valencia 1-0 for its fourth straight league win following a three-match losing run.

Jorge Cuenca scored a 54th-minute winner for ninth-place Villarreal, which moved two points behind eighth-place Valencia.

Valencia has only one win in its last five league games.

MORE COVERAGE FROM THE ASSOCIATED PRESS:

BARCELONA, Spain (AP) — Four years later, Barcelona is again celebrating a triumph in the knockout stage of the Champions League.

The five-time European champions returned to the quarterfinals with a 3-1 win over Napoli on Tuesday.

Fermín López, João Cancelo and Robert Lewandowski scored for Barcelona as it advanced 4-2 on aggregate after a 1-1 draw in the first leg in Italy three weeks ago.

Amir Rrahmani scored for Napoli, which couldn’t repeat its last-eight appearance from last season, when it won a knockout round for the first time.

Barcelona had been eliminated in the group stage the last two years and hadn’t reached the quarterfinals since 2019-20, when it lost to Bayern Munich.

“It was an incredible night,” Barcelona midfielder Sergi Roberto said. “It had been four years since this club was where it deserves to be. We have to enjoy this moment.”

In the other Champions League match on Tuesday, Arsenal eliminated Porto in a penalty shootout after a 1-1 aggregate draw.

The Champions League could be Barcelona’s last realistic chance for a title this season. It was eliminated in the Copa del Rey and trails Spanish league leader Real Madrid by seven points. Coach Xavi Hernández already announced he will leave at the end of the season.

“It was a great match, very complete,” Xavi said. “We have been criticized unfairly, and today we showed that this team is prepared to compete in Europe. We are among the best eight teams in Europe. We have to enjoy it.”

The victory also means extra income for Barcelona, which has been struggling financially recently.

The Catalan club is unbeaten in six meetings with Napoli in all competitions.

It struggled to keep the Italian side from threatening after taking the early lead at Estadi Olímpic Lluís Companys. Goalkeeper Marc-André ter Stegen, making his 100th UEFA appearance, was tested often by Napoli’s attack.

Barcelona had a few chances to increase its lead on counterattacks before Lewandowski sealed the win from close range in the 83rd after an assist by substitute Roberto. Lewandowski has scored 13 goals in his last 13 knockout stage games in the Champions League.

López put the hosts ahead with a shot from the middle of the area in the 15th minute after a low cross by Raphinha, who also set up Cancelo’s goal two minutes later. The Brazil forward hit the post from inside the area and the ball bounced back for an easy strike by Cancelo.

Napoli got on the board in the 30th with Rrahmani finding the net with a low left-footed shot for his first European goal.

“We gave them too much space, we lost possession often, we started with the wrong attitude and didn’t defend well,” Napoli coach Francesco Calzona said.

Barcelona teenager Lamine Yamal had a goal disallowed for offside in the 68th.

The last time Barcelona played in the quarterfinals it had also eliminated Napoli 4-2 on aggregate in the round of 16.

Xavi still couldn’t count on several players because of injuries, including Pedri, Frenkie De Jong and Ferran Torres. He played with 17-year-old Pau Cubarsí as a central defender, and the teenager was named the man of the match as he helped contain Napoli’s attack in his European debut.

The other teams that have advanced to the last eight include Real Madrid, Bayern Munich, Paris Saint-Germain and Manchester City.
