In this age of technology and ever-present cameras, it seems impossible to fly under the radar – even more so when you’re one half of one of the industry’s most powerful couples. But money can buy anything, including privacy, in a world that has long forgotten the meaning of the word.

sail yacht eos marine traffic

Eos is one of the world’s largest and most famous sailing yachts and a record-breaker until the 2017 arrival of Oceanco’s Black Pearl, a stunning sailing masterpiece that is believed to have inspired the construction of the future record-breaker, Jeff Bezos’ Y721. Whenever Eos makes an appearance in public, much like a superstar, it draws attention and makes headlines, yet, for all this, it remains an enigma.

Here is an attempt to lift the veil as much as possible on this enigma, a $200 million vessel that is said to be the epitome of luxury, elegance and, not in the least important, outstanding design. After all, you don’t become an icon (enigma or not) by conforming to standards.

sail yacht eos marine traffic

Eos is named after the Greek goddess of dawn, the daughter of titans Hyperion and Theia, and sister of the sun god and the moon goddess. Eos is a sailing yacht, a three-mast Bermuda-rigged schooner that relies on a couple of MTU 4000-series engines for outstanding performance, regardless of the wind conditions. At full throttle, Eos can hit top speeds of 16 knots (18 mph / 29.5 kph).

Built by luxury shipyard  Lurssen  on a Lurssen naval architecture, an exterior design by Bill Langan, and interiors by Francois Catroux, Eos was delivered in 2006, after a three-year construction phase. Since delivery, it has had one single owner and he’s been keeping it a secret on purpose, as it serves as the family yacht.

That owner is billionaire media mogul Barry Diller, known as  “Diller killer”  in the industry because of his exceptional negotiation skills. He is married to fashion designer (and icon in her own right) Diane von Furstenberg, who is often erroneously referred to as the owner. Together, the two have an estimated net worth of $5.2 billion as of 2022, which means that, yes, they can definitely afford a $200 million vessel, as well as keep it a secret from the public by not chartering it.

sail yacht eos marine traffic

At 93 meters (305 feet) in total length, Eos is among the top 5% yachts in the world by LOA. The fact that it’s a sailing vessel would have been enough to draw all eyes to it at port, but the three 61-meter (200-foot) masts make it an unforgettable sight, as does the deep dark blue hull. Eos has a teak deck, an aluminum hull, and aluminum superstructure. Much of the superstructure was repaired after an extensive fire in 2012, when the ship was at harbor while Diller and von Furstenberg were visiting ashore.

A later refit program, throughout 2018 and 2019, was even more extensive: the Rodal rigs were removed, repaired and repainted, the hull and superstructure were repainted, the tank arrangement was reorganized and the engines were overhauled. Onboard systems like the treatment unit and the watermaker were also serviced then, and navigation systems were brought up to speed with state-of-the-art equipment.

With an interior volume of 1,500 GT, Eos offers accommodation for 14 guests across seven suites and a crew of 21 – a necessarily high number because sailing it is no single-man job. Eos was never offered for charter, though legend has it that it has hosted some of the biggest stars in the world, including Jeff Bezos on his final week as Amazon CEO in 2021, singer and actor Harry Styles, and television host and reality star producer Andy Cohen.

sail yacht eos marine traffic

Because it’s always been used privately, details on the interior are as scarce as photos of the same, but again, legend has it that features a viewing lounge with panoramic views, a jacuzzi, a 4.2-meter (14-foot) mural of the world map, and a most glamorous staircase made of glass. A 2.7-meter (9-foot) tall sculpture by Anh Duong, showing Diane von Furstenberg, graces Eos as figurehead. von Furstenberg usually posts to social while onboard Eos during summer-long journeys, but she always makes sure her photos don’t show much of the interior.

sail yacht eos marine traffic

In 2009, when Eos pulled into an Australian port for some maintenance work, captain Lucas Alexander told the local  media  that sailing Eos felt like living in a high-end villa at sea. He also said that the vessel never traveled by a preset itinerary, which, if true, probably helps with keeping it a mystery.

Two major projects of the Royal Huisman ´s refit facility Huisfit, the 93m sailing yacht EOS and the 40m motor yacht BE MINE are almost completed. Both vessels reflect the finest Huisman standards of engineering and service in a customised, yet competitive, refit package.

93m sailing yacht EOS

Lurssen 93m sailing yacht EOS

At 93m (305ft), the Lürssen -built three-masted schooner EOS is the world’s largest sailing yacht. In keeping with huisfit’s highly flexible approach to location, the majority of the refit is taking place at Harlingen, while the refurbishment of the spars and other engineering works are being carried out at the Royal Huisman yard at Vollenhove.

Appreciation of huisfit’s capabilities has resulted in an extended work-list that now includes a new paint job for hull, superstructure and spars; overhaul of deck equipment and Rondal masts; updates to teak deck; extensive service work to mechanics, board systems (including 5 year Lloyds re-certification) and air conditioning, together with general works and cosmetic repairs.

Lurssen 40m motor yacht BE MINE

Lurssen 40m motor yacht BE MINE

The 40m (132ft) superyacht Be Mine, launched by Lürssen in 1991, was ready for updating and remodelling work as well as an extensive refit programme. The work schedule at Vollenhove includes paintjob of underwater body, steel hull and aluminium superstructure; construction work including updates to sun deck, main deck and hull portholes; replacement of teak decks; service work to board systems; interior modifications including upgrades to the upholstery; updates to electronics (entertainment, navigation and communication) and to electrics.

The huisfit package Royal Huisman set the bar high for its own aspirations when it established huisfit. The yard team know that owners, project managers and captains seeking high standards of refit work are also seeking a professional, business-like and reliable yard culture.

Transparency, integrity and dependability in customer dealings means honest and realistic project delivery times, defined and agreed terms of business, and regular operational and financial reports to the owner’s captain or project manager. Careful planning and efficient operations offer flexibility and adaptability as well as competitive rates.

True to the Huisman tradition, there is no standard refit: every huisfit project is a custom project, planned and implemented with careful regard to the yacht’s individual build, condition and refit objectives. With four custom new builds and two major custom refits in progress, the Royal Huisman team are working to high levels of efficiency, applying their exceptional skill sets across all projects, further enhancing the team’s capabilities in the process.

Satellite image of clouds and ship tracks in the Pacific Ocean south of Alaska

A total of 99,800 commercial ships sail the seas, carrying around 90% of the world’s trade in goods. Their operation is vital—the transport of COVID-19 vaccines, for instance, wouldn’t have been possible without them.

The fuel oil that runs these immense vessels can contain up to 3,500 times more sulfur than the diesel that is used for land vehicles. When the fuel is burned, large amounts of sulfur oxides and other aerosols are released into the atmosphere. These aerosols increase the concentration of droplets in marine low clouds, which makes them appear brighter. These bright clouds trail ships and can be seen in satellite images.

How cool is it that we can see ship tracks from space? From this #GOESWest view it looks like there were plenty of ships at sea off the coast of California yesterday. More imagery: https://t.co/ImaTdzF5tz pic.twitter.com/jSpezm24nF — NOAA Satellites (@NOAASatellites) April 25, 2019

In 2018 , Tianle Yuan, a University of Maryland, Baltimore County, atmospheric scientist at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center, and his team began developing a machine learning algorithm that automatically identifies these “ship tracks.” After years of refining the algorithm with satellite imagery, they created the first global map of ship tracks with data spanning the past 18 years.

“Before our study, the largest samples contained about 5,000 ship tracks, and that’s already a huge effort,” Yuan said. “But now we have hundreds of thousands, maybe millions.”

The team’s first finding after analyzing the monitoring map is good news for both people and ocean health.

Regulations Are Working

Sulfur oxides are harmful to people’s respiratory health and damaging to ocean ecosystems. When the particles reach the atmosphere, they quickly become surrounded by water and promote cloud creation. Those clouds produce acid rain , which affects crops and forests near the coasts, and contribute to ocean acidification , which likely reduces marine ecosystem services .

“Most of the ship tracks just disappeared. Regulations are working.”

As a response to shipping-related air pollution, the United Nations’ International Maritime Organization (IMO) started implementing limits on the sulfur content in fuels. In 2015, a sulfur content limit of 0.1% was established for ships sailing within Emission Control Areas ( ECAs ). Outside ECAs, the sulfur content limit was reduced from 3.5% to 0.5% in 2020 . Together the latest regulations account for an annual reduction of 8.5 million metric tons of sulfur oxides—77% of total emissions, according to IMO agency data .

The results obtained by Yuan and his team, published in Science Advances , put those numbers into perspective. “Within the ECAs, most of the ship tracks just disappeared,” Yuan said. “Regulations are working.”

Although the COVID-19 pandemic affected maritime trade, the number of ship tracks in ECAs continued to decline even as trade began to recover between late 2020 and early 2021, Yuan said.

However, when analyzing data from the U.S. West Coast, the scientists noted that since the implementation of the ECA limits in 2015, several ships changed their routes to the south, outside the ECA. While shipping traffic from Los Angeles and San Diego ports decreased, hot spots were found in Baja California, just behind the ECA.

Although there is no hard evidence, Capt. Ricardo Valdés of Mexico’s Secretariat of the Navy “would also not doubt” that ships may be evading ECAs to avoid buying cleaner fuels, which are also more expensive. Valdés has been sailing for 35 years and is very familiar with shipping policies and practices.

“The tools and legislation exist, but political will is needed.”

In fact, in 2018 , Mexico’s Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources (SEMARNAT) sought to create its own ECA because the lack of regulation on emissions was causing vessels to use cheap, polluting fuel when arriving in Mexican national waters. “We want to control the emissions from the ships that transit our waters [75% of which are foreign], so that these emissions are as few as possible,” said Rodolfo Lacy of SEMARNAT.

Ultimately, the IMO declined Mexico’s initiative because the country is not a signatory to Annex VI of the International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships, the mechanism through which emissions limits are implemented.

Although the IMO already has an emissions inventory based on automatic identification system data that lets it identify ship emissions, fuel consumption, and energy use, Yuan’s team’s algorithm “is useful for validating some of the bottom modeling that’s used as the basis for IMO decisionmaking,” said environmental scientist Bryan Comer , who leads the International Council on Clean Transportation’s marine program.

The algorithm could also be “an excellent tool” for monitoring evading ships and their emissions, Valdés said, but it will be useful only if Mexico works to adhere to IMO agreements. “[Mexico] can’t require a foreign ship to comply with some standards if its own ships don’t…The tools and legislation exist, but political will is needed.”

The Road to Decarbonization

In addition to emitting sulfur aerosols, bright ship tracks reflect the Sun’s rays, a process that generates a cooling effect in the atmosphere. However, measuring this effect is extremely difficult because environmental conditions in each region affect clouds in different ways.

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) has stated that aerosol-cloud interactions constitute the biggest uncertainty in climate projections. Recent studies have shown that although global air pollution has decreased by up to 30% from 2000 levels, cleaner air may have increased warming by 15%–50%. Still, the IPCC report points out that “strong, rapid and sustained reductions in methane [and other greenhouse gas] emissions would also limit the warming effect resulting from declining aerosol pollution and would improve air quality.”

“Humanity is in the process of doing a large-scale experiment with the planet.”

The IMO is aware of this. Comer explained that decarbonizing the maritime sector would produce benefits to both health and climate. The main issue, he said, is that decarbonization will reduce the atmospheric concentration of greenhouse gases. “We should not take any steps backward,” he said.

For Columbia University climate scientist James Hansen , Yuan’s work is an important element that will help scientists better understand the complex role of aerosols in climate change. The constant change of clouds makes it extremely difficult to study how they interact with aerosols. But ship tracks are perfect laboratories to study these interactions. There is very little change in and out of the plume of exhaust emitted by ships as they sail under the clouds, so scientists can attribute changes in the clouds more directly (though never entirely) to the aerosols.

“The radiation balance of the planet seems to be affected as we expected, but the record needs to be longer to quantify the impact,” Hansen said. “Humanity is in the process of doing a large-scale experiment with the planet that potentially can provide important information about future climate.”

Port of Baltimore paralyzed after Key Bridge collapses, stands to lose $15M per day

W ith the remains of the Francis Scott Key Bridge blocking the only channel in and out of the Port of Baltimore, officials suspended vessel traffic in and out of what is one of the nation’s busiest ports.

The port’s closure will disrupt the import and export of goods and vehicles until the search-and-rescue operations are completed and the 50-foot channel is cleared of debris.

Depending on how long that takes, the port’s closure likely will have wide-reaching and potentially harmful ripple effects, disrupting shipping and supply chains not only locally but nationally and internationally. The port is one of only three on the East Coast that can accommodate some of the largest ships in the world.

It began early Tuesday morning when an outbound container ship struck the bridge carrying Interstate 695, collapsing most of the span in moments and sending multiple vehicles into the Patapsco River.

State transportation officials offered no estimate on when the port might reopen to vessels or the immediate impact on shipping. Officials, who spoke amid a continuing and massive search and rescue mission, made clear that the port was not shut down and remained open to process trucks inside terminals.

“Vessel traffic into and out of the port of Baltimore is suspended until further notice, but the port is still open for truck transactions,” Maryland Transportation Secretary Paul Wiedefeld said during a news conference.

Scott Cowan, president of the International Longshoremen’s Association Local 333 in the Port of Baltimore, said the halting of ships in and out of the port will be “catastrophic” for the thousands employed there.

“Until the shipping channel gets opened, there’s not gonna be any ship traffic, there’s not gonna be any ships, there’s not gonna be any work for the people,” Cowan said.

With the shipping channel closed, the port stands to lose an estimated $15 million per day in economic activity, said Daraius Irani, chief economist at the Regional Economic Studies Institute at Towson University. Irani based the current estimates, which include a $1.5 million loss per day in state and local taxes, on an earlier state Department of Transportation report.

Baltimore’s port, which generates more than 15,300 direct jobs, had rebounded from global supply chain difficulties and disruptions during the coronavirus pandemic and hit records last year for handling cargo. It is the nation’s 16th busiest port, ranking first for volume of autos and light trucks, roll-on/roll-off heavy farm and construction machinery, imported sugar and imported gypsum. The port’s main container terminal, Seagirt, is operated by Ports America and located off Broening Highway.

Last year, both state-owned public marine terminals and private terminals handled a record 52.3 million tons of foreign cargo worth $80 billion.

Baltimore’s port handles roughly 2.5% of the inbound containers entering the U.S., said John D. McCown, a senior fellow at the Center for Maritime Strategy in Arlington, Virginia.

“I’m sure the carriers and their customers are trying to figure out, for ships that are still moving, where they offload that,” McCown said. “That’s going to cause some difficulty in some cases.”

Ports along the East Coast would be likely candidates, including those in Norfolk, Virginia; Charleston, South Carolina; and Philadelphia, he said.

“With shippers and carriers, the biggest issue is the uncertainty in terms of timing,” he said. “What shippers really want for the most part is definition. In the next few days you’ll have people making decisions. They’re not going to want to sit around and kind of wait because the cargo’s got to keep moving.”

With a suspension lasting an unknown period, “that’s a big issue for Baltimore … that’s 100% of their business, and there’s no alternative to that,” McCown said. “Unfortunately, until it’s back and operating, it’s not going to get any of that business back.”

Baltimore’s location makes it the closest Atlantic port to major Midwestern manufacturing centers and an overnight drive to one-third of all U.S. households, according to the port’s website.

Louis Campion, president and CEO of the Maryland Motor Truck Association, said he’s concerned about the impact on the port. He raised concerns about traffic congestion, particularly because deliveries such as hazardous material loads cannot travel through I-895 or I-95 tunnels. He also questioned how long fuel will be available at terminals to process deliveries over the next few days.

But he said it’s “premature” to discuss the effects of the bridge’s collapse. He said he is in touch with “various administrative agencies to see how and when we can talk about alternative routing” for deliveries.

“We’re really still trying to assess it,” Campion said.

Cowan said none of the 2,400 workers he represents at the port were injured or missing, to the best of his knowledge. He said he was alerted to the bridge collapse by calls from his members around 2 a.m.

But the days ahead look dark.

Workers get hired on a daily basis, Cowan said, and work will dry up the moment the cargo already in the terminal is processed.

Cowan said he’s in touch with state officials and the port director and trying to get a timeline on when the shipping channel will reopen.

Challenges are likely ahead for businesses at Tradepoint Atlantic, the sprawling logistics and distribution hub on the former site of Bethlehem Steel in Sparrows Point where tenants rely on the port and highway network. The project’s developers are planning a new $1 billion container terminal and had said they expect to break ground by the end of next year. Tradepoint is home to 50 tenants, among them Amazon, Under Armour, FedEx, BMW, Volkswagen and McCormick & Co.

“For nearly 50 years, the bridge has served as a vital artery of transportation and logistics, not only for the Baltimore region, but for the entire East Coast of America,” Tradepoint officials said in an emailed statement. “As part of the Port of Baltimore, we are committed to helping our state and local partners and the entire port community recover and rebuild from this tragedy.”

Amazon was evaluating the immediate and future impact of the bridge collapse on employees, delivery partners and the community around its warehouses and “will make any adjustments to our operations that are needed,” said Richard Rocha, a spokesperson.

The Dali, a 948-foot, Singapore-flagged cargo ship, collided with a bridge support, causing much of the 46-year-old bridge to collapse. The vessel had been traveling about 8 knots (about 9 mph) and was being guided through the port by a pilot as required by state law.

Operated by charter vessel company Synergy Group, the Dali was carrying cargo for Maersk customers under charter. No Maersk crew or personnel were on board.

Maersk, a Danish shipping and logistics company, omitted Baltimore on all its services for the foreseeable future, until passage is deemed safe, “due to the damage to the bridge and resulting debris.”

The shipper said it planned to discharge cargo already on the water in nearby ports, then use land transportation to reach final destinations. Maersk warned that cargo set to discharge in Baltimore could face delays while being rerouted.

Two construction workers who were repairing potholes on the bridge at the time — one of whom was hospitalized — were rescued, Wiedefeld said. Six other workers were presumed dead Tuesday evening, said Jeffrey Pritzker, executive vice president of Brawner Builders.

The Maryland Chamber of Commerce urged businesses and residents to be patient and adjust daily routines and operations, likely for the long term, to prepare for a “monumental task ahead to recover from this tragedy and restore this vital transportation link.”

“While the focus remains on the human impacts, the Francis Scott Key Bridge is a critical transportation artery for our state,” the group said. “Its extended closure will inevitably disrupt commercial activities and supply chains.”

Besides handling commercial cargo, the port offers year-round cruising to destinations such as the Bahamas, Bermuda and New England through companies such as Carnival Cruise Line and Royal Caribbean International.

Carnival will be temporarily moving its cruise operations for the Carnival Legend to Norfolk, Virginia.

“Our thoughts remain with the impacted families and first responders in Baltimore,” said Christine Duffy, president of Carnival Cruise Line. “We appreciate the pledge made by President Biden today to dedicate all available resources to reopen Baltimore Harbor to marine traffic as soon as possible. As those plans are finalized, we will update our future cruise guests on when we will return home to Baltimore, but in the meantime, we appreciate the quick response and support from officials in Norfolk.”

The port logistics team for Royal Caribbean is working on alternatives for the Vision of the Seas’ ongoing and upcoming sailings, a spokesperson said in an email. Customers will be notified once plans are finalized, the email said.

Macinzie McFarland, senior manager of strategic communications and public affairs for the Cruise Lines International Association, said the group is following the situation.

McFarland said that based on published 2024 itineraries, cruise activity at the Port of Baltimore — the 29th largest cruise port in the U.S. — includes 12 ships making 115 ship calls for the 2024 calendar year. McFarland said any adjustment to cruise activity at the Port of Baltimore, which has 378,000 scheduled passenger movements, will be announced by individual cruise lines.

“Right now, the most important thing to do is to allow the emergency workers to do their work,” McFarland said.
