Pointe Claire Yacht Club

Customer ratings and reviews.

Always a nice spot to walk with your loved one

awesome place.i had a great time with mom and bro.the bartender understood my. brother who has special needs.much appreciated we felt welcomed

Nice place to dock/disembark your boat. There's a little park on the corner and the view of the St Laurence river is chill. Parking is very full over the weekends. You can also leave your vehicle near the school in their parking.

Didn't actually go to the yacht club. It was more like Ottis Redding.... sitting on the dock of the bay.... watching the ships sail away. At the park next to the yacht club. A very pleasant afternoon indeed.

The view is stunning specially at sunset 🌆

Almost three weeks after his bizarre death, what exactly happened to Jolyon Ditton at the Pointe-Claire Yacht Club on the fateful night of Sept. 6 remains unclear.

What is known is that Ditton, 65, was a seasoned sailor whose boat was safely docked at the private club when he apparently drowned.

The British expat spent much of his life piloting boats in Montreal during the summer, and in the Caribbean during the winter. His life ended officially on Sept. 9 after he was disconnected from life support machines at the Royal Victoria Hospital.

According to the yacht club’s manager, Ditton’s demise around midnight was the result of an unfortunate accident aboard the 23-foot power boat on which he lived.

“Basically, there was a slip and fall incident that knocked (Jolyon) unconscious,” Trevor Collins told the Montreal Gazette.

“What caused the slip and fall, we don’t know. We’re not privy to any autopsy reports, or any of that kind of thing.”

One story on Facebook suggested Ditton banged his head before falling into the water. Another story making the rounds is that he jumped in to help a club member who’d gone overboard.

The prevailing theory, however, seems to be that Ditton simply collapsed.

“As far as the doctors could figure out, he didn’t slip or trip or anything,” said Don Lulham, a friend who was with Ditton when he took his last breath at the hospital, and who spoke with people who were on the boat on the tragic night.

“He walked a couple of steps and collapsed. He was unconscious when he went into the water. He either had a stroke or he fainted.

“It was just pure rotten luck that when he landed the water was right there. They got him out in half a minute, but it was too late by then.”

Lulham made a point of saying “alcohol had nothing to do with this.”

The Quebec coroner’s office is investigating the cause of death. Montreal police said it had nothing to add when contacted by the Montreal Gazette.

Ditton had no immediate family in Montreal. His brother and sister in Britain have been trying to sort out the circumstances of his death.

In an email to the Gazette, Alex Ditton said his brother had recently inherited the equivalent of nearly $200,000 after the death of their 100-year-old mother in May.

“It was a complete surprise for my brother,” Alex Ditton said. “He had thought that all my mother’s money had ‘gone’; she was over 100 and had been in a care home for a while, which is of course expensive.

“I believe he rushed out and spent some of the money on the yacht club bill and a Mercedes and rent on an apartment. Sad that he did not have time to enjoy the rest.”

Rick Blue, of the musical duo Bowser and Blue and an old friend of Jolyon Ditton, said they last spoke on the day of his death when they made plans to go sailing on Lake St-Louis the following afternoon.

They were to meet at 2. But he never turned up, and calls to his phone went answered.

News of his death hit hard. Blue recounted how his children looked forward to an annual trip aboard Ditton’s boat every Canada Day.

“For the last 10 years, every July 1, Jolyon would take me and my kids out on the lake at dusk and we’d watch the fireworks from the lake,” said Blue, who got to know Ditton in the 1980s when he and George Bowser were playing bars in Montreal and on the West Island.

“Jolyon was a charismatic guy. He was always one of these guys at the bar who ends up talking to everybody,” Blue said.

A photo on Ditton’s Facebook page shows him aboard a boat this summer with members of the British royal family — Autumn Kelly, a Pointe-Claire native, and husband Peter Phillips, the eldest grandchild of Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip.

Other photos of a smiling Ditton, with his salt-white beard, suggest he enjoyed the simple pleasures of life as a sailor.

He had the reputation as a bon vivant, and could hold up his end of a conversation in any company, be it royalty or the rugby crowd in the British Virgin Islands, Blue said.

“He got along with everybody through all the social classes. He was an articulate guy. He had a lively wit and sense of humour.”

Blue said he heard “third-hand” the bizarre circumstances of Ditton’s death.

It was not his first accident at the yacht club this summer. Ditton suffered a broken arm in May after tumbling while working on his boat.

Nor was he the first sailor to drown in Lake St-Louis this summer. In July, sailing instructor Pierre Lajeunesse, 40, drowned after going into the water near Baie-d’Urfé to retrieve a hat. Police said he wasn’t wearing a life-jacket, and alcohol might have been a factor.

A “marine celebration” of Ditton’s life will take place at noon on Oct. 1 at Lake St-Louis, with a fleet of boats near Pointe-Claire. A gathering will follow at Annies Sur-Le-Lac pub in Ste-Anne-de-Bellevue, at 2.

An official “Jolly’s wake” will take place Oct. 2 at 2 p.m. at Kellys Pub in Pointe-Claire.

“All who knew him are welcome,” said Lulham, who is expecting a good turnout.

“Jolyon had no malice for anybody; that’s what made him stand out from the crowd.”

Pointe-Claire Yacht Club

Our vision of the PCYC Sailing School is more than just water activities for the day; it is a journey of personal development and growth for every individual who steps through our club’s boundaries.

For those kids just discovering the sport for the first time, it’s about enjoying mother nature and a new freedom on Lac St Louis. It’s about understanding the dynamics of wind and water combined to move a boat through the water in a direction of their choice. It’s about the building of confidence that they can be the commander of their own ship!

For those others who have taken a stronger interest in sailing, they move into more complex aspects of the sport to not only understand the wind and weather but also how to manipulate it to make the boat go where they want with confidence and control.
