Longshore 16 and 19

Dad would have looked at the Longshore 19 and said, "Now that's a real boat. That's all you need." Both the 16-footer and the 19-footer are very much real boats and truly all you need to start the adventure of cruising. Both of these boats have enough shoal draft that you could even get by cruising without a tender. Just hop over the side into knee-deep water and wade ashore carrying your shoes. No, you can't take the breadmaker.

The general hull form is a synthesis of types found among the Shetland Island boats of Scotland. They are double-enders with outboard rudders, copious sheer spring and modest beam. They don't have any kind of centerboard or daggerboard, and that means they will rely upon their long, straight, shoal keels for lift to weather. I just can't see how you would get any reasonable weatherly performance out of these boats. I'm not sure I have the patience or the imagination to enjoy beating in one of these little sloops.

Both sloops are rigged as standing lugs. I think they are standing lugs. There's standing lugs and dipping lugs, but the standing lug is the easier rig to use. It doesn't really matter if this is a weatherly rig; all it has to do is match the weather performance potential of the hull. There's no backstay and the jib is set flying on furling gear.

I suppose what I want out of a small boat like this is strength, the ability to get warm and dry and the ability to sail the boat seriously and effectively. If you lived on a body of water that gave you cruising destinations of 20 miles or less on a beam reach in both directions, I think these boats would work. Even when its blowing 25 you could reach across the bay in fine style. But when I started my spring cruise, the temperature climbed to 45, the wind blew 20 on the nose for most of the day and it rained that Pacific Northwest, ever-present rain. You can always motor. But that's not the point. We're sailors. If I wanted to motor, it wouldn't be at 5.5 knots.

These boats certainly capture the desire to take off. Much as I try to convince myself that I couldn't cruise Puget Sound in one of them, the more I feel challenged. The 16 and 19 are beautifully built little hookers. Can't you just imagine sliding into Port Ludlow and dropping the hook right next to a Swan 65? You could disappear below for an hour. Drive them crazy trying to figure out what you can do below for an hour on such a small ship. You tell me who's got the bragging rights.

What is a pocket cruiser? It’s a small trailerable sailboat, typically under 30 feet in length, that’s ideal for cruising big lakes, bays, coastal ocean waters, and occasionally bluewater cruising. Pocket cruisers are usually more affordable, compact, and offer a level of comfort that’s comparable to bigger liveaboards.

Conceived as a way to bridge the gap between a safe, comfortable, family cruiser and a competitive racer, Gary Mull’s Ranger 26 does exactly as it was designed to. Undeniably fast, (one won the 1970 IOR North American Half-Ton Cup) the boat sails as well as it looks. Catboats were once a common site in coastal waters, where they sailed the shallow bays as fishing or work boats. Their large single and often gaff-rigged sail provided plenty of power, and a centerboard made them well-suited for the thin waters they frequently encountered. In the late 1970s, Canadian builder Hinterhoeller introduced the Nonsuch 30, a fiberglass variation of the catboat design, with a modern Marconi sail flown on a stayless mast, and a keel instead of a centerboard. Debuted in 1971 in California, the Newport 27 was an instant success on the local racing scene. Seakers of Weymouth is delighted to present this rare example of a Longshore 16 in immaculate condition with its own trailer. The Longshore 16 is a classic double ended, standing lug rigged boat with large rudder and long ballasted keel, very stable and easy to sail. The Longshore 16 is a traditionally designed 16 foot trailer-sailer. Good looking, well built, very stable, simple to launch and sail - she is ideal for harbour, estuary, and coastal sailing, while sturdy enough to endure stronger winds or attempt more adventurous passages. The makers said that the design is based on a Portpatrick fishing boat - double ended (ie pointed at both ends) with a hatch opening to a large cabin (which would have been the hold in the original design). She is constructed from GRP but has teak-laid decks and teak gunnel cappings. The hull has wide clinker-style lands and the mast and yard are Carbon fibre. Many metal fittings - fairleads, cleats, rudder hinges, furling gear are bronze. A horizontal sliding hatch opens to a cosy cabin. The cabin is ideal for storing all the stuff you need for sailing - picnic, oilies, flares - but is large enough to store an inflatable dinghy (when deflated), bodyboards, etc. It is also an excellent safe space to store children, who love hiding down below. It will even sleep 2 (provided you are good friends!) The build quality and attention to detail are superb. Altogether, she is a very attractive boat.

Resent Question answerThere is not a Fulmar 19 forum per se but there is quite a bit of information on other multi-hull forums if you Google Fulmar 19. There are also some Youtube videos showing the boat under sail. These boats were built by one of the biggest, trimaran boat builders in Canada. The boat was too expensive to manufacture; so they stopped production in 1998. As far as parts availability; this boat needs nothing at this point. All the hardware used on this boat is readily available at any marine, sailing company. As far as the sail goes--they were custom made for the boat and can be easily reproduced by any sail maker.Also, the Hobie Tandem Island trimaran sail would be a direct replacement and available from any Hobie dealer.This is probably one of the easiest boats to learn to sail and has great performance. One of the greatest features is the deployable sea-leg drive. If the wind dies, you just lower the drive and pedal t three or four knots.

This is a sturdy vessel. Orginally designed to sail the English Channel, and now produced in California you don't find these making their way to the east coast often. Boat includes trailer and is able to put in the water and sailing in less than an hour. The boat shell is a 98,. but still in great shape. Most of the items on the boat have been upgraded recently. Motor is 2 years old and has less than 50 hours on it, still in mint condition. The entire electrical system was redone last year. All lights inside and out work and were replaced at the time. Battery charger was also put in and is new. Also recently added a AUTO PILOT! Its awesome, you can just set the autopilot with the garmin GPS (also included) and lay back and sail or motor. We loved taking the boat out for a day, and even taking it to the keys and sleeping on it. Sleeps 2 comfortably, and 4 for a night or two. Hate selling it, but we bought a small business and we can't take it out like we used to. It's currently in dry storage, where it lives whenever its not sailing. No salt water damage. Great thing about this boat is its small enough to trailer, (has a retraceable keel that makes beaching possible) big enough to sleep on, easy enough for a beginner, yet strong enough for any sea's. Full foam hull so the boat is unsinkable. After purchase, if needed, I'm willing to take the new owner out to show him/her how the boat works.
