CARPE DIEM 7 is a traditional gulet chartering in Croatia. This magnificent gulet is enjoying the benefits of new ownership, offering guests a brilliant charter experience along the coastline and islands of Croatia. She is ideal for families and friends wanting to charter a smaller gulet with 4-cabins.

CARPE DIEM 7 Aft Deck

After many successful years with charter gulets, and a lifetime spent on the sea, owner and Captain Frano Gugic has refurbished CARPE DIEM 7, the celebrated sailing gulet with a history of competing successfully in the acclaimed "Bodrum Cup" regatta.

After an extensive refit in 2017 CARPE DIEM 7 is in top standard. The decks were replaced with Burmese teak, and interiors refurbished and reupholstered with the utmost attention to detail. Below decks, guest cabins were revamped with all the essentials and upscale comforts that charter guests require for a supremely relaxing onboard experience. On deck, shade cloths and sun beds have been replaced creating a superb ambience for soaking up the sunshine in complete comfort.

Unlike her counterparts, boutique gulet CARPE DIEM 7 is ideal for smaller groups, as her spacious proportions have been divided into just four cabins for three or four couples or extended families. Each cabin has an ensuite. Ceilings heights are 2.3m adding to the sense of space and light onboard, while AC throughout makes for tranquil nights and pleasant days despite the heat outside.

In the large saloon are social spaces with ample room for eight guests to dine and recline in style. CARPE DIEM 7 has Satellite TV/LCD, DVD, CD music player and small library as well as wi-fi.   Her gourmet galley produces delectable meals and Captain Frano is brilliant at hand-picking a renowned local Chef to tailor creative cuisine for your charter.

CARPE DIEM I delivers a true sailing experience, compared to other gulets which generally operate only under motor. Imagine the thrill of exploring the Dalmatian coast and the crystalline waters of the Adriatic under full sail, with just the sounds of the breeze and the slap of sails.

She has a variety of water toys onboard, including a speedy 4.8m tender with 100hp engine, among other equipment.

Owner and Captain, Frano is a qualified marine engineer whose passion and pride revolves around his beloved gulets. Frano and his dedicated crew take great delight in surprising charter guests with a host of unique experiences seldom extended to tourists. Guests who have had the pleasure of enjoying the hospitality of Frano and crew are unanimous in their praise for their genuine warmth and the captivating allure of setting off to experience Croatia by gulet.

the luxury gulet Carpe Diem 7 in a bay of the turquoise Mediterranean Sea

CARPE DIEM 7

Carpe Diem 7 is a really excellent gulet and one of the finest in her class in Croatia. Her owners invest in her upkeep assiduously and she sparkles after her annual varnish and refurbishment. At 30 metres in length, she is large for a gulet with just four cabins, which means that those cabins are particularly spacious and well-equipped. She is extremely comfortable and run along very professional lines.

Captain Frano is the owner, a marine engineer by trade and a very keen sailor, and the gulet is a family-run affair with his wife Lorena and son Niko joining him on board.  The chef is really talented and whips up delicious Dalmatian delicacies from his little galley, whilst you relax on deck with a glass of chilled rosé or dive into the clear blue Adriatic to work up an appetite for lunch.

Up to eight guests can be accommodated across the four mahogany-furnished cabins, which comprise a master, VIP, double and twin. This flexible accommodation makes the gulet an attractive option for larger families and groups, or for those simply looking for a little bit of extra space. In addition, Carpe Diem 7 is especially well-endowed with water sports toys, including paddleboards, kayaks, underwater scooters, a windsurfer and a powerful 100HP outboard motor on the tender to tow the donut and to pull up water-skiers and wakeboarders with ease.

On the Menu

An excellent chef with many years' experience., delectable fresh food.

Chef’s specialities include Buzara, a type of stew made with langoustines and mussels. Other local dishes on the menu include chard à la Dalmatia (a locally grown chard known as blitva which is boiled with potatoes) and oven-baked great amberjack (a white fish). And for dessert? The Ferrero pancakes, made with Ferrero Rocher chocolate, always go down well, but our personal favourite is the apple cinnamon tart with Italian gelato.

An extensive selection of watersports equipment

One of the best-equipped vessels on the water when it comes to recreation  equipment.

The super popular underwater scooters will keep you amused for hours, while kayak, canoe and SUP will be there for a quieter exploration of the bays. Kids options are available whilst there is jetski for the grown-ups.

Carpe Diem 7 Croatia gulet yacht image of LLorena the hostess in the galley near Stinivas bay

Frano’s companion for 27 years, Lorena started her career in yachting as a hostess on a 54f Sunseeker. Beforehand she worked in a hotel on Korcula followed by running her own travel agency. A graduate in Economics, she speaks English and Italian and hopes to learn Turkish one day. Her discreet approach and mellow personality are ideal for guests seeking no fuss and privacy.

Carpe Diem 7 Croatia gulet yacht image of Frano the owner supervising on the aft deck in Split Croatia

To understand Frano’s passion for boats and sailing you need to know about the history of a tiny village on the Korcula’s northern coast.  Racisce used to be the centre of shipbuilding in Dalmatia – a place where the most renowned ships and top naval architects emerged. After graduation Frano studied marine engineering, a profession that took him around the world sailing many large vessels. On his return home he applied his marine expertise for the benefit of guests; he purchased Carpe Diem 7 in 2016.

CarpeDiem 7 Plan[1]_pages-to-jpg-0001

CARPE DIEM 7 is an incredible gulet. Elegant, stylish, and a full-mahogany build, she is beautifully maintained with the utmost care. It is one of the very few gulets that sails—and with great performance, too (she was a multiple winner of the Bodrum Sailing Cup some years ago).

This is a family run yacht based in Croatia. The crew, caring by nature, gives great attention to detail—to service, food, and the general ambience. It feels like a home from home. There is great harmony on this gulet. Captain Niko grew in the family who are the gulet pioneers in Croatia. He is welcoming, knowledgeable and considerate, a great host for our clients. His crew matches that perfectly. Chef Andrija is enthusiastic and draws his inspiration from his grandparents’ cooking. And it is fantastic!—traditional recipes, using local ingredients, slow cooked and presented with a modern twist. This is a paradise for foodies!

The outdoor areas are versatile and can be shaded or fully open, whatever the guests’ preferences are. The large outside dining table offers a beautiful setting for up to 8 guests. Next to it is a comfortable lounging area with cushions. The sunbathing/lounging bow area is a great size! Normally, the crew displays all the water toys there, right next to the steps that lead to the sea. There is a nice oval seating area there with two low cocktail tables. A perfect place to enjoy the views while sailing. The salon has a bar and another large dining table that is rarely used during summers. The guests area, four en suite cabins, is completely separate and can be closed off by the doors in the hallway. The master cabin is large and takes the whole width of the gulet. The other three cabins are the same size as each other, two are doubles and one is a twin cabin. All cabins are en suite.

The Dalmatian coast is well known for its beautiful old towns and quite rightly, too. They are amazing places, full of treasures from the Roman period to the Renaissance. You can construct fantastic sailing holidays travelling from one of these towns to the next, like the merchants of old. But you can also head just for anchorages to relax, completely unwind and enjoy a bit of (voluntary!) isolation. We highly recommend it!

How does the charter agreement work?

Once your chosen yacht has been confirmed, we will send you a standard MYBA or Goolets charter agreement that needs to be signed. If your chosen cruise route requires a different embarking or disembarking place other than the yacht's central harbor, delivery/redelivery fees may apply.

What are the payment terms?

After signing the MYBA or Goolets charter agreement, a deposit of 50% of the total charter cost is required. You can pay the fee via bank transfer or credit card (only Visa or MasterCard). The other 50%, an Advance Provisioning Allowance (if applicable), taxes, positioning fees, and any previously agreed charges are payable via bank transfer eight weeks before departure.

and any previously agreed charges needs to be settled via bank transfer six weeks before departure.

What are the actual operating expenses?

Once you made the final payment of the charter, you pay the Advance Provisioning Allowance (APA). Under MYBA terms, this fee is usually between 30% - 40% of the total charter cost.

This covers the operating expenses of a charter (explained under Charter Terms), such as fuel, food, drinks, port fees, and ad hoc incidentals. The APA is given to the captain before the start of your charter. Some yachts and gulets also offer food/drinks packages which are normally paid in cash during embarkation, while the port taxes are paid during embarkation according to the costs presented by the captain. The Captain ensures that the yacht is fully fuelled and stocked when you step on board.

While an up-to-date summary of accounts can be requested at any time during your charter, a full set of accounts will normally be submitted by your captain at the end of the cruise.

In case of surpassing the amount of money already paid during your yacht charter (with the APA), additional funds (in cash) will be required at once. If there is an outstanding balance from the yacht charter, it should be settled in cash or by bank transfer before you disembark. In case of a remaining credit at the end of your charter, you will be fully reimbursed.

If a transfer by car to and from the yacht is required, it can be arranged either by the charter company or by the yacht’s captain, payment for which will be deducted from your APA.

How can we make your yacht charter personalized?

To ensure a unique and tailor-made charter experience, we will send you a detailed questionnaire eight weeks before you embark on your yacht. You can tell us your group's preferences and special requirements, such as dietary or medical needs, any particular wishes regarding exercise, entertainment, or if you are celebrating a special occasion.

Are internet and satellite TV connections available onboard?

In case you really need to get some work done during your vacation, no worries. On most yachts, there is mobile broadband internet and satellite TV, so you will stay connected to the rest of the world. Just keep in mind that the service can be limited in some areas (you are in the middle of the sea after all). If you anticipate regular usage of the internet, let us know prior to embarking, as upgrades might be subject to availability and additional fees may apply.

Is smoking allowed onboard?

Smoking is permitted only on the outside decks, and on some yachts, only in dedicated outdoor areas. Please consult our charter brokers for more information. For safety reasons, smoking indoors is strictly prohibited on all yachts.

Are tips for the crew mandatory?

Even though tips are not mandatory, the guests normally extend a gratuity to the devoted crew. The amount depends on the guest's satisfaction, but it is approximately 10% of the charter fee. The tips are equally distributed among all crew members by the captain.

Should I get any insurance?

In case of unforeseen circumstances that might prevent the charter, we highly recommend taking out the Cancellation and Curtailment Insurance to protect the investment. Besides that, the guests should be covered by Personal Accident and Medical Insurance, and their belongings are insured against theft, loss, or damage. Charterers’ Liability insurance is also highly recommended. Contact your broker for further assistance and additional advice regarding the insurance.

How are the charter rates calculated?

Charter rates are estimated weekly. If a charter exceeds seven days, they are calculated pro-rata against the weekly rate divided by seven and multiplied by the number of charter days. Keep in mind that some yachts are only chartered on a weekly (Saturday-Saturday or Sunday-Sunday) basis, especially during the high season.

High and low season rates vary depending on charter locations and types of yachts. The high rates apply to the most popular charter periods (July/August and Christmas/New Year), and to all major events. Low season rates apply to all other periods.

The charter rates on our website are up to date but may be subject to change.

What are the charter terms?

Most charter rates are based on MYBA Terms, which entail that the yacht is in full commission, with all necessary equipment, properly insured for marine risks, and managed by a crew, whose wages, food, and clothing are the owner’s expense.

All other operating expenses are charged to the charterer and include (but are not limited to): fuel and lubricating oils for the yacht and her tenders; local taxes; pilotage; port, harbor, and marina dues; customs clearance; water and power; personal laundry; all provisions, wines, beers, spirits, soft drinks and consumables for the charterer’s group; shoreside excursions, telecommunication, and internet costs.

Please note that, occasionally, a yacht may offer an alteration on the terms described above. For further information about specific yachts, consult your broker.

Do any other taxes apply?

For charters in European waters, Value Added Tax and delivery costs may be charged on the gross Charter Fee, due to the European Union tax legislation. In other countries, local taxes may also apply. Depending on your chosen charter destination, our brokers will provide any prevalent rates.

REVIEWS FOR GULET CARPE DIEM 7

H. morris (usa), special thanks for gluten free food for two of us.

Captain Frano, Lorena, Niko, Peter and chef Mateo.

Our family had no idea our week in Croatia would be the best vacation we have ever had together, (and we have been many places). Your country and islands are so beautiful and the waters so clean and enjoyable both above and below.

We thank all of you for the special care you gave the children with water sports. We love being with you and your wonderful family.

Regards, Morris family 😊

T. Antony (ITA)

Great adventure in croatia.

4 couples met to share this great adventure. We have experienced a trip of a lifetime, funny memories, laughter, gluttony and relaxation. The bonus of meeting the carpe diem family, 5 wonderful people was a blessing.

D. Ross (USA)

Nice memories.

Amazing people, food, views, swimming and islands. I will forever treasure this voyage.

Things to know

If you are unable to find a gulet that meets your requirements on our website, don’t worry, we are here to help. Our team of experts is constantly working to update our database with the latest and best options available. However, if you still can’t find the gulet that suits you, please don’t hesitate to contact us and let us know your preferences. We will do our best to find an alternative option that meets your needs and provides you with the best possible cruising experience.

On a gulet, safety is a top priority for both children and adults. Experienced captains navigate routes based on wind direction to ensure a comfortable ride, and gulets have safety equipment like life jackets, throwable flotation devices, and medical kits. Gulets also have a wooden or inox rail to prevent falls, and some have safety nets. Children can play safely in the super saloon during cruising, and parents should always follow ship rules and keep an eye on their kids. In the rare event of someone falling overboard, the crew is trained to handle it, but prevention is key. Remember, safety always comes first!

Yes, you can sleep outside on the deck of a gulet, and it is a must-do when cruising with a gulet. Imagine anchoring in a quiet bay after dinner and relaxing under the stars. Just make sure to bring extra blankets and clothes, as nights can get cold. Talk to your salesperson and captain about gulets with large deck spaces and routes with more natural bays and a mild climate. Remember, safety is always a top priority.

Yes, it is possible to change group members during a gulet cruise, but it is essential to inform the captain beforehand. It will require some maneuvering in organizing the route, but it is not impossible. The destination of the port where people change must be settled in advance, and our customer support experts will be happy to tailor the route to your liking. Just inform your sales expert, and he will do his best to take all your wishes into consideration.

Embarkation usually starts around 4.00 PM or 5.00 PM, and the ship will embark from the port after settling in. The crew will prepare you a welcome drink and your first dinner. Disembarkation takes place after breakfast, latest until 9.00 AM or 10.00 AM, depending on the gulet and destination. The captain will dock at your port of check-out one day earlier or, according to your wishes, stay in a bay nearby away from crowds.

Yes, most gulets have mobile broadband internet, but not satellite-connected, and coverage can be limited in remote areas. In Croatia, coverage is about 80%. Downloading videos or streaming movies is not recommended due to internet limitations. Prepaid internet sim cards are available, and many harbors, restaurants, and bars offer free internet in Croatia. Some deluxe gulets have satellite connections, but this is rare and should be arranged in advance.

Gulets have classic European 24 V / 220 electrical sockets, making it easy to plug in devices such as hairdryers and mobile phones. However, since gulets are not always connected to the electric power plant, it is essential to be mindful of power usage. Some gulets have more generators and are better equipped with electricity, and some have solar panels. It’s worth keeping these limitations in mind when booking your cruise. Air conditioning is a significant generator user, so you need to be aware of its usage and limits. Nonetheless, feel free to plug in your devices while cruising, as you won’t run out of battery.

Gulets are primarily pleasure boats and are not built for heavy sailing. They usually sail near the coast and only enter open waters when safe. The primary goal of a gulet cruise is to explore picturesque bays, swimming spots, and islands. Most gulets have sails, but they are mainly for showing and taking pictures, and 90% of the time, the gulet will use a motor. However, if you desire to sail on a gulet, ask your sales representative for options.

The crew on gulets can communicate with guests in different languages. Although some captains may not speak English fluently, they will try their best to understand and communicate with you. Luxury gulets often have crew members who speak multiple languages such as German, French, Spanish, Italian or Russian. If you have a specific language requirement, inform your sales expert, and they will do their best to accommodate your needs.

Yes, our company provides 24/7 support during your stay on a gulet. We aim to make your cruise memorable and will try to find a solution for anything you need. It is important to inform us at least 24 hours in advance of your preferences so that the captain and his crew can take all of them into consideration. We recommend booking your gulet few months in advance, especially for high season, and we are always reachable to assist you during your cruise.

Payment with credit cards is not possible on gulet charters, so cash is needed to buy provisions for your gulet cruise. Extras like water sports or private marinas also need to be paid in cash. ATMs are easily accessible but have limits on withdrawals and fees. Payment with credit cards is possible in most luxury restaurants and bars, but it’s important to check with local establishments in more deserted or non-touristic areas to avoid unpleasant situations.

The currency you need to pay on your gulet cruise depends on the gulet you are using, as they may use their home currency. In Croatia, that is Euro. In general, it’s best to ask your sales representative about their payment options. ATMs are available everywhere in Croatia, but there may be differences in withdrawal fees and currency conversions. Payment with credit cards is also an option in more touristy areas, but not on gulets.

Gulet cruise expenses depend on the food package. In Croatia, half-board is common, and dinners onshore will require some money, but the amount of food on the gulet will be significant. Prices of drinks on the gulet are usually the same or cheaper than onshore bars. Tipping in Croatia is acceptable but not mandatory, and it is usually around 5% to 10%. It’s recommended to make a budget as expenses depend on personal choices.

Yes, you can change the route during your gulet cruise, but the captain has the final say. Before the cruise, you will discuss the route options with the captain based on your preferences, weather, and other factors. Once you are on the gulet, you can modify the route, but safety is the captain’s priority, and they will ensure that the route changes are safe. It is recommended to trust the captain’s expertise and let them take care of the rest to enjoy your cruise to the fullest.

Yes, you can choose to anchor in quiet natural bays overnight, but there are a few things to keep in mind. Firstly, you need to consider the weather and listen to the advice of your experienced captain to ensure safety. It may also be difficult to find secluded bays during high season, and there is an expectation of quiet after midnight. If you plan a big party, let the captain know in advance to avoid any potential issues. Anchoring in bays is a great experience for morning swims and dinners under the stars, but it’s recommended to talk to your captain and arrange to have dinner instead of lunch if you choose a half-board package.

Yes, the route can be tailored to your liking. When finalizing your cruise, you can describe your preferences, such as whether you prefer swimming and sunbathing or more active activities, staying in ports or bays, and being organized or going with the flow. The route planning will be done together with you and the captain, taking into consideration your gulet and its possibilities, the number of cruising days, your interests, and weather conditions. The captain will also guide you through the next day’s plan and make adjustments if needed, as long as it is safe and realistic.

The availability of water activities on a gulet depends on the vessel, so it’s important to discuss your preferences with your sales expert beforehand. Most gulets have basic equipment on board, but if you have specific requests, it’s best to mention them in advance. Water sports can be arranged and delivered to you if not available on the gulet, and local providers are also an option. Additional charges may apply for activities and equipment. The customer support team is always ready to help you plan an exciting and active gulet cruise.

Gulets can sail, but they are not built for heavy sailing. Their main domains are pleasure and relaxation. Some gulets do not even have sails, and crews are not always keen on sailing. However, if the winds are strong enough, you may be able to sail, and it can be a fun and memorable experience. Some gulets are better suited for sailing than others, so it’s best to mention your interest in sailing to your sales expert, who can help you find the right gulet for you.

After signing the contract, a 50% payment of the boat rental price is required to secure your gulet cruise. The remaining 50% can be paid 60 days before the charter date. It is important to comply with the payment conditions to avoid any issues or cancellation of the charter.

In the event that a charterer cancels their reservation, the deposit paid for the gulet rental is non-refundable. Additionally, if the charterer cancels the reservation, no payment will be refunded. We highly recommend that charterers carefully consider their travel plans before making a reservation to avoid cancellation fees.

7 Best Russian Mule Recipes

Nov 22, 2019

What is the best way to make and serve   the Russian Mule? In this post, we lay out the classic Russian Mule recipe along with six awesome variations that will keep you coming back for more! We also explain the origins of this classic drink and the best way to serve it. Read on!

Introduction

two Moscow Muled copper mugs with citrus slice on its rim and hand pouring yellow liquid into one mug

A truly exceptional cocktail is more than swishing alcohol together with your go-to mixture. Cocktails should heighten your senses with exquisite presentation, flavors, and aromas. Drinking itself brings people together to experience fun, share stories, and have a good laugh. Thus, any cocktail worth sipping needs a story and personality of its own. And one such cocktail is the Russian Mule.

The Russian Mule, also known as the Moscow Mule, is a cocktail that has been around for decades. There are a couple of stories that explain how it came into existence, but one of the most popular ones has its origins in Los Angeles. Story has it that in 1941, three people whose businesses were not doing so well found a way to make their products complement each other to build sales.

Jack Morgan, the owner of the Cock 'n' Bull pub, had a stock of ginger beer in his basement that wasn’t selling very well. John Martin had bought a vodka distillery in the 1930s, but that too was not doing well. Lastly, Sophie Berezinski had come to the United States from Russia with a load of copper mugs from her father’s factory that she hoped to sell. Together, as they discussed the woes of their ventures, they began entertaining the idea of a cocktail made of ginger beer, vodka, and lime juice served in a copper mug. That is how the Russian Mule was born, and it has enjoyed immense popularity ever since.

In this article, we’ll explore:

Making the Russian Mule

  • How is the Russian Mule served?
  • Russian Mule Recipes

The Russian Mule drink recipe has three main ingredients. Spicy ginger beer, vodka, and lime juice. Over time, many variations have emerged, but most of them still include these three. Today, the cocktail remains a favorite in many parts of the world, but more so in the United States.

How is the Russian Mule Served?

Since its inception, the copper mug has become the traditional cup in which the Russian Mule drink is served. After the meeting at the Cock ‘n' Bull, it’s reported that Martin, the owner of the vodka distillery, traversed the country popularizing the new cocktail. He would ask bartenders to pose for photos with a copper mug and a bottle of his vodka. They would keep one photo for display, and he would keep the other for marketing.

The best cocktail makers know that icy drinks served in copper cups have an extra sensation because the metal quickly takes on the chilled temperature of the cocktail. The mug's rim becomes cold almost instantly, giving your lips a frozen feeling. Copper is highly effective at insulating the cold temperature of liquids and deflecting heat. The mug’s handle helps preserve drink temperature and keeps the heat from your hand away from the walls of the copper mug.

What’s more, using copper cups enhances the individual flavors of vodka, ginger beer, and lime. According to some experts, once vodka comes into contact with the walls of the mug, copper starts to oxidize, enhancing the taste, and boosting the aroma of vodka slightly.

Cold copper brings to life lime juice, intensifying the tangy citrus notes while at the same time reducing the acidity to better compliment the spiciness of the ginger beer. Also, extra cold copper increases the bubbles in carbonated ginger, making the Russian Mule even fizzier, when compared to serving it in a glass or plastic container.

When all these flavors attain their maximum potential, they make the Russian Mule a classic American cocktail.

Here are some of the best recipes for the Russian Mule, along with some great variations on the classic:

The Classic Russian Mule Recipe

Preparation Time: 5 Minutes Serves: 1

Ingredients:

  • 4 oz ginger beer
  • 2 oz vodka
  • 1 oz fresh lime juice
  • 0.5 oz sugar syrup
  • 2 pieces of ginger

Instructions:

  • In a shaker, muddle the pieces of ginger then add vodka, sugar syrup, and lime juice.
  • Shake until they’re well combined and strain into a copper mug.
  • Top with ginger beer.
  • Add ice, and use a lime wedge to garnish.

This recipe contains the basic Russian Mule ingredients. The sugar syrup is used as a sweetener, which is easier to add to cold beverages compared to granulated sugar.

The English Russian Mule

  • 4 oz ginger beer
  • 2 oz English gin
  • 1 oz lime juice
  • 0.5 oz sugar syrup
  • Pour the ginger, lime juice, and sugar syrup into a mug and stir to mix.
  • Add ginger beer and ice.
  • Garnish with the lime wedge.

Gin is a favorite drink among the Britons, which makes it an ideal ingredient to add to this English version of the Russian Mule. It has a herbal, piney flavor that blends well with sweet, slightly spicy ginger beer.

One of the reasons why gin became so popular is because of its benefits to the body. To begin with, it has a much lower calorie count than other alcoholic drinks. Each shot comes at around 97 calories. In addition, it’s low in sugar, and these two attributes make it a good ingredient for people who are keen on managing their weight. Gin also helps reduce the signs of skin aging , given that its main ingredient, juniper, is rich in anti-oxidants.

The Mimic (Non- Alcoholic ) Russian Mule Recipe

copper mug with sliced lime and mint leaves

Preparation Time: 3 Minutes Serves: 1

  • 8 oz non-alcoholic ginger beer
  • 1 lime, sliced
  • 1 pinch mint
  • Muddle the sliced lime and mint in a shaker, then add ginger beer and shake.
  • Strain into a glass and garnish with a mint sprig.

This is a non-alcoholic version of the Russian mule cocktail. It comes with the same invigorating flavor and is a suitable option if you want to lay off the alcohol. For the best result, ensure the lime and mint are fresh. That way, they will release a lot of flavor and aroma into the Russian Mule drink.

The Russian-Mexican Mule Recipe

  • 2 oz tequila
  • 0.5 oz syrup
  • Combine the ginger beer, tequila, lime juice, and syrup in a copper mug.
  • Garnish with mint sprigs and serve.

Tequila and Mexico go hand in hand, and that’s what gives this recipe its Mexican identity. The drink is known for its burning sensation and is liked by many, while others dislike it in equal measure. However, when tequila is combined with ginger beer, its bitterness is balanced out and made more bearable to those who don’t fancy it. Of course, the lime juice and sugar syrup add more of the citrusy, sweet edge.

In addition, having a bit of tequila in your cocktail may aid with digestion. Tequila has high levels of insulin, which encourage the growth of good bacteria in the digestive tract, inducing better digestion. It’s also good for bones, can help control blood sugar by lowering its levels, and also reduces the level of pain perception. If you have been having trouble sleeping, a glass of this may help calm your nerves and ease you into a restful slumber.

Pineapple and Ginger Russian Mule

  • 1½ oz vodka
  • ¾ oz ginger simple syrup
  • 2 tbsp. fresh lime juice
  • ¼ oz pineapple juice
  • Splash of club soda
  • Pour vodka, lime juice, and ginger syrup into a cocktail shaker and combine.
  • Add an ice cube, then shake well.
  • Strain mixture into a copper mug and add pineapple juice.
  • Top with a splash of club soda.

For fruit lovers, this is the ideal Russian Mule drink recipe. The sweet and tart tropical flavors of the pineapple make it a refreshing drink suitable for any occasion. Club soda brings a mineral flavor, adding more texture to the drink.

Not to forget that pineapple juice has several health benefits. Firstly, it contains bromelain , an enzyme that has powerful anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant properties. It helps prevent and reduce swelling, bruising, and is useful in the treatment of injuries. Secondly, research has shown that this enzyme is instrumental in fighting the growth of cancerous cells in the body when used alongside chemotherapy. When bromelain is consumed regularly, it can help reduce the risks of developing colon and prostate cancer.

Lastly, thanks to its vitamin C content, pineapple juice reduces the risk of coronary heart disease. With such benefits, a mug of this Russian Mule variation  seems like a good thing any day.

Orange Russian Mule

Prep Time: 5 Minutes Serves: 1

  • 2 oz orange juice
  • 4 oz non-alcoholic ginger beer
  • 2 tbsp. lime juice
  • 1 Orange slice
  • Combine vodka, orange juice, ginger beer, and lime juice in a glass.
  • Add ice and stir.
  • Garnish with an orange slice.

This is another sweet and refreshing drink for anyone looking to brighten up their cocktail. Even better, orange juice comes with a host of health benefits that makes this Russian Mule variation  all the more worthwhile. This citric drink is full of important nutrients such as potassium , folate, and vitamin C. These nutrients promote bone health, boost the immune system, and protect against cardiovascular disease.

Orange juice is also a rich source of anti-oxidants that fight oxidative damage in the body. These include flavonoids and carotenoids. Besides helping prevent diseases such as cancer, anti-oxidants also promote healthier skin.

The Aussie-Russian Mule Cocktail

hand holding wooden spoon stirring liquid in a glass pitcher

  • 2 oz ginger beer
  • 2 oz dark rum
  • 0.5oz sugar syrup
  • 1 lime wedge
  • Mix the ginger beer, rum, sugar syrup, and lime juice in a copper mug.

What gin is for Britain, rum is for Australia. Dark rum, with its notable taste, makes smooth cocktails. These are especially spicy and delicious when ginger beer is added into the mix.

A Drink That Makes Your Day

With so many variations on the classic Russian Mule cocktail , it's up to you to decide which one appeals best to your tastes and preferences. To take your cocktail experience to the next level, make sure to get some authentic copper mugs for your next batch of Russian Mules!

Ch. 9 The Development of Russia

Ivan i and the rise of moscow, learning objective.

  • Outline the key points that helped Moscow become so powerful and how Ivan I accomplished these major victories
  • Moscow was considered a small trading outpost under the principality of Vladimir-Suzdal into the 13th century.
  • Power struggles and constant raids under the Mongol Empire’s Golden Horde caused once powerful cities, such as Kiev, to struggle financially and culturally.
  • Ivan I utilized the relative calm and safety of the northern city of Moscow to entice a larger population and wealth to move there.
  • Alliances between Golden Horde leaders and Ivan I saved Moscow from many of the raids and destruction of other centers, like Tver.

A rival city to Moscow that eventually lost favor under the Golden Horde.

Grand Prince of Vladimir

The title given to the ruler of this northern province, where Moscow was situated.

The Rise of Moscow

Moscow was only a small trading outpost in the principality of Vladimir-Suzdal in Kievan Rus’ before the invasion of Mongol forces during the 13th century. However, due to the unstable environment of the Golden Horde, and the deft leadership of Ivan I at a critical time during the 13th century, Moscow became a safe haven of prosperity during his reign. It also became the new seat of power of the Russian Orthodox Church.

Ivan I (also known as Ivan Kalita) was born around 1288 to the Prince of Moscow, Daniil Aleksandrovich. He was born during a time of devastation and upheaval in Rus’. Kiev had been overtaken by the invading Mongol forces in 1240, and most of the Rus’ principalities had been absorbed into the Golden Horde of the Mongol Empire by the time Ivan was born. He ascended to the seat of Prince of Moscow after the death of his father, and then the death of his older brother Yury.

image

Ivan I. He was born around 1288 and died in either 1340 or 1341, still holding the title of Grand Prince of Vladimir.

Ivan I stepped into a role that had already been expanded by his predecessors. Both his older brother and his father had captured nearby lands, including Kolomna and Mozhaisk. Yury had also made a successful alliance with the Mongol leader Uzbeg Khan and married his sister, securing more power and advantages within the hierarchy of the Golden Horde.

Ivan I continued the family tradition and petitioned the leaders of the Golden Horde to gain the seat of Grand Prince of Vladimir. His other three rivals, all princes of Tver, had previously been granted the title in prior years. However they were all subsequently deprived of the title and all three aspiring princes also eventually ended up murdered. Ivan I, on the other hand, garnered the title from Khan Muhammad Ozbeg in 1328. This new title, which he kept until his death around 1340, meant he could collect taxes from the Russian lands as a ruling prince and position his tiny city as a major player in the Vladimir region.

Moscow’s Rise

During this time of upheaval, the tiny outpost of Moscow had multiple advantages that repositioned this town and set it up for future prosperity under Ivan I. Three major contributing factors helped Ivan I relocate power to this area:

  • It was situated in between other major principalities on the east and west so it was often protected from the more devastating invasions.
  • This relative safety, compared to Tver and Ryazan, for example, started to bring in tax-paying citizens who wanted a safe place to build a home and earn a livelihood.
  • Finally, Moscow was set up perfectly along the trade route from Novgorod to the Volga River, giving it an economic advantage from the start.

Ivan I also spurred on the growth of Moscow by actively recruiting people to move to the region. In addition, he bought the freedom of people who had been captured by the extensive Mongol raids. These recruits further bolstered the population of Moscow. Finally, he focused his attention on establishing peace and routing out thieves and raiding parties in the region, making for a safe and calm metaphorical island in a storm of unsettled political and military upsets.

image

Kievan Rus’ 1220-1240. This map illustrates the power dynamics at play during the 13th century shortly before Ivan I was born. Sarai, the capital of the Golden Horde, sat to the southeast, while Moscow (not visible on this map) was tucked up in the northern forests of Vladimir-Suzdal.

Ivan I knew that the peace of his region depended upon keeping up an alliance with the Golden Horde, which he did faithfully. Moscow’s increased wealth during this era also allowed him to loan money to neighboring principalities. These regions then became indebted to Moscow, bolstering its political and financial position.

In addition, a few neighboring cities and villages were subsumed into Moscow during the 1320s and 1330s, including Uglich, Belozero, and Galich. These shifts slowly transformed the tiny trading outpost into a bustling city center in the northern forests of what was once Kievan Rus’.

Russian Orthodox Church and The Center of Moscow

Ivan I committed some of Moscow’s new wealth to building a splendid city center and creating an iconic religious setting. He built stone churches in the center of Moscow with his newly gained wealth. Ivan I also tempted one of the most important religious leaders in Rus’, the Orthodox Metropolitan Peter, to the city of Moscow. Before the rule of the Golden Horde the original Russian Orthodox Church was based in Kiev. After years of devastation, Metropolitan Peter transferred the seat of power to Moscow where a new Renaissance of culture was blossoming. This perfectly timed transformation of Moscow coincided with the decades of devastation in Kiev, effectively transferring power to the north once again.

image

Peter of Moscow and scenes from his life as depicted in a 15th-century icon. This religious leader helped bring cultural power to Moscow by moving the seat of the Russian Orthodox Church there during Ivan I’s reign.

One of the most lasting accomplishments of Ivan I was to petition the Khan based in Sarai to designate his son, who would become Simeon the Proud, as the heir to the title of Grand Prince of Vladimir. This agreement a line of succession that meant the ruling head of Moscow would almost always hold power over the principality of Vladimir, ensuring Moscow held a powerful position for decades to come.
