richard mille cup regatta race

10 classic yachts competing at the Richard Mille Cup

The Richard Mille Cup is the newest regatta on the racing calendar that celebrates the pageantry and classic beauty of hand-crafted sailing yachts built before 1939 (or faithful replicas). Beginning in Falmouth earlier this month, the fleet of classics have worked their way across the Solent competing in a series of inshore and offshore races. As the inaugural regatta nears its final leg from Cowes to Le Havre, we take a look at the line-up of schooners and cutters vying for first place...

Length : 69.3m Builder : Van der Graaf Built : 1903

Commissioned by New York Yacht Club member Wilson Marshall, this three-masted schooner hit the headlines by winning the transatlantic Kaiser’s Cup in 1905. Atlantic covered a staggering 341 miles in 24 hours with an average speed of 14.1 knots. This world record would remain undefeated until 1998, making it the longest-standing speed record in the history of yachting. Atlantic was saved from the scrap yard on three separate occasions but unfortunately was broken up at the Newport News Harbor in 1982. Using copies of William Gardner’s original drawings, serial classic yacht restorer Ed Kastelein embarked on an extensive reconstruction project, and triumphantly relaunched Atlantic in 2010 with an identical sail plan and original lines.

Length : 65m Builder : Astilleros de Mallorca Built : 1984

Originally named Jessica, Adix remains one of the largest sailing yachts built since the 1930s. In the mid-late 1980’s she was bought and used as a promotional tool by Alan Bond, who named the yacht after his controversial beer XXXX. Interestingly, she was significantly shorter in the 80s than she is now. She underwent a massive cosmetic restoration in 1989 courtesy of Captain Paul Goss and naval architect Gerard Dijkstra . The subsequent refit included cutting the hull in half and adding a section, which brought her to her current length.

Length : 42m Builder : Herreshoff Built : 1915

This classic twin-masted schooner was built for Harold S. Vanderbilt, the naval architect who produced a succession of undefeated America’s Cup defenders between 1893 and 1920. Other notable owners include Canadian composer Walter Boudreau (who renamed her Janeen ) and Italian film producer and publisher Andrea Rizzoli, who had her restored at the Beconcini shipyard in La Spezia, Italy. Mariette and her sistership Vagrant are the last of the series still in service.

Length : 38.2m Builder : William Fife Built : 1911

As a descendant of Big Class racing and a precursor to the J-Class, Mariquita is the missing link in racing’s evolution. Once World War I broke out, she was sold and renamed Maud IV , where she spent five years safe in Scandinavian waters. She returned to Britain and resumed racing in 1924 until the outbreak of World War II when her luck run out. Sold and stripped of her rigging, sails, mast, and keel, Mariquita was moved to a mud berth where she spent 40 years as a houseboat. Restored by Fairlie in 1991, she set sail once more and has continued to take part in regattas, taking home the Big Boat Panerai Trophy in 2014.

Moonbeam IV

Length : 35m Builder : William Fife Built : 1920

Moonbeam IV is the last and largest of the four Moonbeams commissioned by eminent London lawyer Charles Plumtree Johnson. Construction started in 1914 but was not completed until 1920 due to the outbreak of World War I. Winning the Kings’ Cup in 1920 and 1923, a successful decade of racing followed until she was run out by the incoming J Class in the 1930s and the onset of World War II. In 1950 she was bought by Prince Rainier of Monaco and, for a time, settled into the quiet life. Renamed Deo Juvante (the Grimaldi family motto), Moonbeam IV took the newlyweds, the Prince and Grace Kelly, on their honeymoon.

Length : 28.7m Builder : William Fife Built : 1909

Built for the Duke of Medinacelli, friend to the King of Spain, Tuiga was designed identically to the King’s yacht Hispania so that they could race on equal terms. After collecting a string of second places, rumours spread that the Duke was holding back so as not to embarrass the King. The first 15-Metre to be restored at Fairlie, Tuiga has been owned by the Monaco Yacht Club since 1993 and is often skippered by Pierre Casiraghi, son of Princess Caroline of Hanover.

The Lady Anne

Length : 24.38m Builder : William Fife Built : 1912

The Lady Anne was built for Baron George Coats of Glasgow, who at the time of his death was one of the wealthiest men in Scotland. Commissioned in a bid to recover the coveted 15-Metre Cup from the Germans, Coats’ dreams were dashed by Charles Nicholson , who was drafting his revolutionary Marconi gaff-rig at the same time The Lady Anne was being built. She would end up adopting Nicholson’s rig only two years later. She is the sistership of fellow Richard Mille Cup competitor Tuiga.

Length : 19.2m Builder : J.G. Fay & Co (later Camper & Nicholson ) Built : 1903

Designed by Alfred Mylne, Kelpie is one of eight South Coast One Designs still in existence today and has lived through quite the underdog story. In 1914, she was accused of carrying artillery to be used against the Irish Free State government and in the 1960s, she was sold to Newton Ferrers Sailing School and suffered an interior fire that destroyed most of her interior. After a thorough restoration by Fairlie in 2014 (including a new rudder, stem, and sternpost), Kelpie went on to win her class in several regattas, including the Channel regatta, Mahon, and St. Tropez.

Length : 14m Builder : Aldous Ltd. Built : 1922

Designed for sailing in shoal waters, gaff cutter Ayesha is thought to be the only yacht ever designed by Arthur Boyes of Aldous Ltd. In 2001 she won her class in the Prada classic series in the Med, after sailing across the menacing Bay of Biscay to compete. She was bought in 2015 by serial classic yacht owner and restorer Richard Bond.

Length : 12.7m Builder : WT Jacket Built : 1910

This gaff cutter was commissioned by serial boat owner Henry S Norton, who entered Cynthia into various races in the Falmouth area. This included the Royal Cornwall Yacht Club’s Corinthian race in which Norton won the grand first prize of £3. Cynthia has been in Devon undergoing a meticulous, five-year restoration by retired rigger Peter Lucas , who first saw Cynthia decades prior while on holiday with his parents on the Isle of Wight.

Richard Mille Cup: New classics series to take place in 2023

  • Toby Heppell
  • February 22, 2023

A series of offshore and inshore racing will form the new Richard Mille Cup, which will take place for the first time in summer 2023

classic yacht race

This summer a new event is due to take place in the form of the Richard Mille Cup, a series of inshore and offshore races organised with the Royal Yacht Squadron, the Royal Cornwall Yacht Club, Royal Dart Yacht Club and the Société des Régattes du Havre.

The racing is principally designed to be for classic yachts and entry is invite only – though expressions of interest are currently being taken . Entry will be open to invited owners and charterers of yachts built before 1939 or faithful replicas of such yachts. The minimum size of any yacht eligible to enter will be 10M length at the waterline.

Racing will take place under the CIM handicap system. All yachts entering will have to provide a valid CIM certificate and all races, be they inshore or offshore, will be scored with equal weighting.

Richard Mille Cup events

The first event in the new series will take place in Falmouth and registration and the opening reception will be held at the Royal Cornwall Yacht Club on Saturday 10 June 2023 followed by three days of inshore racing in Falmouth Bay.

This will be followed by the series’ first Offshore Race from Falmouth to Dartmouth with the fleet leaving Falmouth on Wednesday 14 June. This will be followed by a dinner in Dartmouth on the evening of Thursday 15 June.

After this 65nm offshore race the fleet will take on another offshore event racing the 90nm from Dartmouth to Cowes. This event will, once again, immediately follow the previous racing, with a start date of 16 June.

After this initial round of inshore and offshore racing the series will take a very short break until 19 June when a welcome reception will be held at the Royal Yacht Squadron followed by three days of inshore racing on the Solent. Weather and tides permitting, this may include a ‘Round the Island Race’.

The final event in the series will be the biggest offshore leg, with the fleet set to race 100nm from Cowes to Le Havre after which a grand prize giving celebration will be held on Sunday 25 June at Société des Régattes du Havre.

classic yacht race

For the winner of the event a new trophy has been commissioned from famed trophy maker Garrard, the manufacturer of the America’s Cup among many other famed sporting trophies.

The Richard Mille Cup will stand 1m tall and the design takes inspiration from the classic yachts that will compete for the trophy.

The Richard Mille Cup is a perpetual trophy and the winner will be presented with a 40cm high replica also made by Garrard.

You can apply to register your interest at the Richard Mille Cup website .

Maine to Host New Classic Yachts Challenge Series

Maine to Host New Classic Yachts Challenge Series

Classic yacht racing has always been strong in Maine due to the state’s many world-class boatbuilders, yacht designers and the state’s gorgeous sailing waters. And this summer the competition will be fierce, as racing ramps up after last summer’s truncated season.

Also, in addition to a new race in Boothbay, there will be a new trophy for boats that compete in at least three classic yacht regattas. The Newport, RI-based Classic Yacht Owners Association has established Maine as its own District in a newly formed competition called the Classic Yachts Challenge Series. To win the Maine District Series, competitors need to race in three races in Maine in two separate Maine events. A goal of the District Championship Series is to give boats that can’t travel between districts the chance to be recognized. To qualify for the Overall Series Championship, an additional two races must be completed with one being in either the Massachusetts or NY/RI/CT districts. The Overall Championship series unites 13 prestigious classic yacht regattas from Long Island Sound to Eggemoggin Reach, Maine.

Maine’s classic racing season will start with the Boothbay Harbor Yacht Club Regatta and Shipyard Cup Classics Challenge, July 24 and 25; followed by the Camden Classics Cup, July 29-31; the Castine Classic Yacht Race, August 5; and the Camden to Brooklin Feeder race on August 6. The Eggemoggin Reach Regatta, now in its 36 th  year and the regatta that started it all in Maine wraps up the Maine series on August 7. These are destination regattas. Every town puts out the welcome mat for these sailors and their crews.

The Maine District Champion and Overall Champion will be announced in the fall in Newport, RI at the CYOA awards ceremony. For more information of the Classic Yachts Challenge Series – https://www.classicyachts.org/series/

The membership-driven, nonprofit Classic Yacht Owners Association was established in 2015 to encourage fellowship amongst owners within the classic yacht community. One of the organization’s goals is to help shape the future of the sport by influencing and cultivating long-term regional cooperation amongst those who are dedicated to owning, maintaining, and racing sailing vessels. CYOA also works to promote classic yacht ownership with the objective of attracting new members and creating new funding opportunities to support future classic yacht events.

McNish Classic Yacht Race sets sail off the coast of Oxnard

classic yacht race

OXNARD, Calif.-The McNish Classic Yacht Race celebrated its 46th competition this weekend.

The race's namesake Dick McNish owns the sailboat Cheerio II, once owned by actor Errol Flynn.

His son took his place in the race on Saturday.

The first to finish Strathmore Cup went to Distant Star.

As part of the race's tradition Distant Star's Captain Chris Frost won his weight in champagne.

Wooden ships from yacht clubs up and down the coast took part in the race hosted annually by the Pacific Corinthian Yacht Club in the Channel Islands Harbor.

The marine layer made it tough to see from shore at first, but the sun eventually came out.

The 100 year old sailing vessel Astor sailed by Richard Strahan and his crew came in first in Schooners and won the Bristol Boat.

Paul Scripps on the Miramar won best elapsed time and CF Kolher of sailing vessel Sally came in first in sloops.

Antigua Classic Yacht Regatta

Antigua Classic Yacht Regatta

Back in the 60’s….

Classic yachts in English Harbour had begun chartering and the captains and crews challenged each other to a race down to Guadeloupe at the end of the charter season. From this informal race, Antigua Sailing Week was formed in 1967, and in those days all of the yachts were classic.

Over the next 24 years…

The classic yachts were slowly outnumbered by the faster, sleeker modern racing yachts. A small number of classics still racing in 1987 found themselves grouped with cruising Class 3 which was less than ideal for these hard to manoeuvre full-keeled vessels.

And so it came…

Captains Uli Pruesse and Kenny Coombs hosted a meeting with other classic skippers onboard the magnificent schooner Aschanti of Saba and, several rums later, the Antigua Classic Yacht Regatta was born.

Cape to St. Helena Yacht Race

Classic Cape yacht race returns

Ahoy sailor! Mark your calendars for the starting gun of an iconic 3000-kilometre yacht race this December.

Richard Holmes

Whether you fancy yourself a salty sea dog, or simply love watching yachts run before the wind from the harbour breakwater, it’s good news for the city that the iconic Cape to St. Helena Yacht Race returns in 2024.

Originally known as the Governor’s Cup – named for the governor in charge of this remote mid-Atlantic island – the race dates back to 1996. That’s when the former captain of the RMS St. Helena mail ship watched the fleet cross the start line of the Cape-to-Rio yacht race.

Inspired, Captain David Roberts imagined a similar race from Cape Town, long known as the ‘Tavern of the Seas’, to the remote British Overseas Territory of St. Helena, the British-owned island that his mail ship sailed to until 2018.

Roberts’ vision came to life in 1997 with the start of the first-ever Governor's Cup race, and since then it has become a cult classic on the annual sailing calendar, held every two years.

‘We’re excited to be part of this incredible event,’ says David Garrard, Vice-Commodore of the Royal Cape Yacht Club. ‘And with just nine months to go, we are working closely with St Helena Tourism to stage this iconic yacht race. We look forward to a good fleet and sharing this tremendous event with the world.’

This year’s race will see a mixed fleet of sailing yachts tackle the 3060-kilometre journey across the South Atlantic, with entries closing on November 1, 2024 and the start date set for December 26, 2024.

‘This race is a great opportunity for St Helena. We're proud to be a part of this long-standing tradition, and it's a wonderful way to put St Helena in the spotlight,' says Matt Joshua, Head of Tourism for St. Helena.

Haven’t found your sea legs? No matter. You can still be on the quayside to welcome the winning yachts: from December 2024 to March 2025 Airlink will offer a weekly flight service from Cape Town direct to St Helena Island!

Suez Canal concerns send more cruise ships to Cape Town .

Falcon Study by Spirit Yachts: New Q-Class Yacht Planned

Spirit Yachts

Spirit Yachts announced in April that it has been commissioned to build a contemporary version of a Q-Class yacht, alongside Dykstra Naval Architects.

Q-class yachts.

Sometimes known as the ‘mini J Class’ and steeped in sailing heritage, Q-Class yachts were first built to the Universal Rule in the early 1900s, developed by Nathanael Herreshoff in the same period that Europe adopted the International Rule, AKA the Metre yachts. The Universal Rule was adopted by the New York Yacht Club in 1903 to determine entry criteria for the America’s Cup and facilitate competitive racing. It is best known today for the J-Class yachts, but at least 16 Q Class boats were built in the 1920s and 30s, some of which can be seen racing today, after a revival in their fortunes over the last two decades.

The ‘Falcon Study’

Spirit’s current project (named ‘The Falcon Study’) has been commissioned by the owner and founder of Q7 Yacht Designs, Peter Silvester, who owns the original 1926, Herreshoff-built, Q-Class yacht Falcon (sail number Q7). Falcon was recently re-launched on the west coast of the USA following an extensive restoration ahead of her centenary anniversary in 2026.

Peter Silvester commented: “The ‘Falcon Study’ is a unique partnership of world-class industry leaders set up to honour the history and legacy of Falcon and to celebrate her centenary with a new commission launching in 2026. The ‘Falcon Study’ will re-imagine Falcon ’s original design using the best systems, materials, and craftsmanship available today.”

Peter added: “Imagine taking the beauty, sailing pleasure, and race-winning pedigree of an original Q-Class like Falcon and refining her to deliver optimum performance combined with modern maintenance characteristics and ease of use.”

Dykstra Naval Architects was appointed to adapt Falcon ’s original Burgess, Swasey and Paine line drawings for modern-day sailing and contemporary manufacture. Dykstra was tasked to retain the original hull lines, full keel, and fractional rig, while introducing state-of-the-art rigging, systems, and deck hardware. The design brief from the client was to “create a ‘modern masterpiece’ that could inspire generations of sailors for the next 100 years.”

Thys Nikkels, CEO of Dykstra Naval Architects said: “We love to focus on projects that make our hearts beat faster and the Falcon Study is certainly one of those. Being part of a team creating a new, reimagined version of a Q-Class Yacht is time well spent.”

Spirit Yachts MD Karen Underwood said: “Our roots are embedded in wooden yacht construction, marrying timelessly classic design with modern technologies. The Falcon Study is a perfect fit for our in-house skills and fulfils our passion for custom projects commissioned by visionary owners.”

The project is in the final design stages with the build due to start this spring leading up to launch in 2026 to coincide with Falcon ’s centenary anniversary.

Moscow Raceway

Map of Moscow Raceway, Grand Prix Circuit FIM 2012 to date

  • 2012 to date

Circuit Overview

Moscow Raceway owes its existence to Russia's desire to host a Formula One race but seems destined to lose out to Sochi and the Igora Drive circuits for the foreseeable future.

Boasting a full FIA Grade 1 Grand Prix layout and and FIM Grade B circuit, the track was initially successful at attracting a range of high-profile championships, from the World Superbikes to World Touring Cars, the DTM and the Blancpain World Series.  One by one these have dropped off the schedule, however, leaving the circuit to host mainly national level events, albeit the most important on Russian racing scene.

classic yacht race

Circuit History

Plans for a street race in the Russian capital were first mooted in the 1980s and a Grand Prix of the Soviet Union did in fact make it onto the draft F1 calendar for 1983. However, bureaucratic barriers prevented the Grand Prix from being held, and the race was dropped.

Two decades later, new plans were advanced for a permanent circuit on an island in the Molzhaninovsky area in the north of the city. These received backing from the Moscow mayor, and F1 circuit designer Hermann Tilke was engaged to design the facility. Construction was due to start on November 30th, 2001. However, the mayor rejected the commercial contract offered by Bernie Ecclestone and construction was delayed. It was eventually abandoned altogether in January 2003 and the land turned over to a hotel, yacht marina and golf course instead.

By 2008 momentum had built again for a new project, intended to host both F1 and MotoGP events and located around 90 minutes from the capital. Hermann Tilke was again employed to design the permanent facility. Unlike previous attempts, this project became a reality and on October 1, 2008 a delegation including F1 driver David Coulthard witnessed the ceremonial laying of the first stone.

Construction continued throughout the next few years, supervised by Tilke. After initially signing a deal with Bernie Ecclestone in 2008, the project was dropped from the 2010 Formula 1 calendar in early 2009, and construction stopped. Work resumed in June 2010, with the new contractor agreeing to complete the road section of the track. By September 2011, all asphalt laying had been completed, and construction of the associated pit, support and medical buildings was being undertaken.

When the full circuit and all of its infrastructure was completed in July 2012, it had cost a total of 4.5 billion rubles. Tilke had designed a technical circuit featuring a 873 metres long back straight – among the longest allowable under modern track design guidelines – which would see Formula One cars achieve a theoretical 193mph.

When presented for inspection, the circuit achieved FIA 1(T) status, allowing for Formula One testing and all categories of racing below this. However, the FIM only granted Grade B status, one below the expected level for motorcycle. This still allows for the raceway's inclusion on the World Superbike calendar, though further work will be required before MotoGP could visit.  Subsequently, the track has achieved FIA Grade 1 status, allowing for full Formula One races to take place.

A total of 18 variations of the circuit can be run, from the full Grand Prix course, to shorter 'sprint' variations and a small 'club' circuit utilising the western end only. World Superbikes have utilised the FIM GP course, as has the Renault World Series and WTCC from 2013 onwards (the Renault series' had previously used GP1),  while the DTM makes use of the shorter Sprint Circuit 4.

Tragedy struck the circuit during the first visit of the World Superbike Championships in 2013. During the first lap of the supporting World Supersport race, Italian rider Andrea Antonelli lost control on a slick track during torrential rain. He fell to the ground where he was struck by fellow Italian rider Lorenzo Zanetti, dying from his injuries later the same day. Criticism was levelled at race organisers for beginning the race in such conditions, while the circuit fell under scrutiny for what some felt was inadequate drainage – both claims strongly rejected by championship promoters, Dorna.

2023 Results

as of Sept 27, 2023

How to read the Series Results:

  • Per the CYCS Notice of Series , to qualify for a boat must be a CYOA Member and compete in 5 individual races across 3 events in at least 2 districts. For district awards, a boat must sail in 3 races across 2 events.
  • A boat's High Point Percentage overall score is determined by summing the top 5 points earned in the boat's top 5 races and dividing that by the total number of boats sailed against in those races - then multiplying by 100. Therefore, 5 first places earned over the season would equate to 100%. A tie breaker is determined by whomever sailed against the most boats. For districts, it is top 3 scores. Qualified boats are then ranked by the CRF Division ( the division listed on their CRF Certificate).
  • In the case where an Organizing Authority (OA) of an event choose to sail boats from different CRF Divisions against each other or not for race management purposes, where applicable the Corrected Time or Corrected Speed was instead used to rank boats against other boats in their CRF Certificate Division. Therefore, the starting class place earned at an event may differ than the division place for the series. Please note for the Eggemoggin Reach Regatta, the ERR Handicap was removed for a boat's CYCS score.
  • The goal of the Series is to encourage friendly competition and find the best way to fairly compare results transparently. A great amount of time was taken to analyze these results and any questions can be directed to Kate Somers: kate @risingt.com
