Nord Yacht: An Insider’s Guide

Ian Fortey

The Nord yacht was known as Project OPUS when it was still being built. It is one of the largest yachts in the world and was launched back in 2021. Like many yachts in the last year this was the target of international investigations and sanctions. However, unlike some other vessels, Nord managed to elude authorities and return to Russian waters. As such it has not been seized and no sanctions have been imposed against its owner insofar as the yacht is concerned.

According to reports, the owner was aware that a potential seizure was imminent where the boat was docked in the Seychelles. To avoid sanctions, a staggering $465,000 worth of fuel was pumped into the vessel before it set sail to Vladivostok in Russia. The non-stop journey was undertaken at full speed and covered 6,701 nautical miles which is pretty amazing. In order to make this work, the yacht had to shut off its mandatory location responders to evade notice by authorities.

Since that time, it has ventured out again and has been seen in Hong Kong, South Korea, the Maldives and, in 2023, it returned to the Seychelles.

Nord is one of the most expensive yachts ever built and features a vast array of features and amenities designed to give passengers a full luxury experience at sea.

Who is the Nord Yacht Owner?

nord yacht helipad

The Nord is owned by Russian billionaire Alexei Mordashov (sometimes spelled Alexey Mordashov). Mordashov is the chairman and largest shareholder of Russia’s biggest steel and mining company Severstal. Though there are a number of billionaires in Russia, Mordashov ranks first if his family wealth is included. His fortune is estimated to be around $30 billion.

How Big is the Nord Yacht?

nord yacht helipad

The Nord is an absolutely massive 466 feet in length, making it one of the largest yachts in the world . The beam of the vessel measures in at 64 feet while the displacement is 9,250 gross tons. It features a 17.7 foot draft and has the capacity to handle up to 36 guests at one time.

How Fast is the Nord and What Engines Does it Use?

nord yacht helipad

Sources actually don’t agree on the internal working of the Nord. Lurssen, the yacht builder, does list the vessel’s speed at 18 knots which is actually in contrast to what other sources say which come in both higher and lower though they don’t specify cruising or maximum speed.

On the low end, cruising speed is listed at 15 knots. On the high end, maximum speed is listed at 20 knots. But, with Lurssen saying 18 knots, you have to take their word that it’s one or the other making either the 15 or the 20 incorrect.

Also interesting is that there is some disagreement as to whether the yacht has 2 or 4 MTU engines. It is generally agreed, however, that the Nord is working with 4,963hp MTU (20V 4000 M73L) diesel engines.

How Much Did the Nord Yacht Cost?

nord yacht helipad

When the yacht was registered in the Cayman Islands the value was listed at $300 million. However, it’s also believed that this number is a bit of an undervaluation and the actual value of the yacht is somewhere around $500 million. If that higher number is true then the Nord ranks among the top ten most expensive yachts in the whole world.

It’s been estimated that annual running costs to handle all the fuel and crew salaries as well as upkeep and general costs are between $40 million and $50 million. Despite the high costs, the vessel is not a part of any yacht charter fleet and can’t be rented out if you’re in the market for a week on a luxury yacht.

Design and Features of the Yacht Nord

nord yacht helipad

Superyacht Nord was designed by German yacht makers Lurssen back in 2021. The exterior and interior design of the yacht were handled by Italian design studio Nuvolari & Lenard. Like most yachts of its size it has a steel hull, teak decks and an aluminum superstructure.

It’s been said that the yacht was designed for exploration and long-range cruising. One of the designers said it’s a warship wearing a tuxedo, if that helps give you an idea of what the boat is like.

The bow is flattered at the front and features a massive nameplate which actually lights up at night. Some Russian billionaires are a bit sheepish about publicity and being seen but Nord wants to be seen and makes sure everyone notices it. Even the choice of paint, avoiding the typical white and going with champagne and deep blue accents plus blue lights, draws attention to every aspect of the yacht.

Amenities and Features

nord yacht helipad

The motor yacht Nord has a prominent helipad located at the bow of the vessel and a very large pool located aft above the beach club. There’s also a second helipad and even a helicopter hangar on board. The hangar closes over the second helipad which is located on the top deck and is built into the main mast of the vessel.

A total of 36 guests can be accommodated in 20 cabins while there is also room for a crew of 50 on board.  There are two elevators to help navigate the vessel’s six decks as well as some of the standard amenities you’d expect guests to be able to enjoy on a luxury yacht. These include:

  • A fully equipped gym
  • A beauty salon
  • A tender garage which houses several tenders as well as a variety of toys and water vehicles
  • A large beach club
  • Massive dining hall and bar area

No pictures of the interior of the yacht have been made public so, as bold as the exterior looks, the interior details are still mostly under wraps.

The Bottom Line

Nord is owned by Russian billionaire Alexei Mordashov. The estimated cost of the vessel is a steep $500 million. The yacht is one of the largest in the world at 466 feet in length. It can reach speeds of 18 knots and has space for as many as 36 guests with a crew of 50.

Like many Russian-owned yachts, the Nord was almost seized in 2020 as a result of sanctions against Russian oligarchs as a result of the war in Ukraine. However, the vessel was able to elude authorities and was last seen in the Seychelles

Standout superyacht helicopter decks

Once the luxury of a select few, the not-so-humble helipad is having a bit of a moment. With the explosion of interest in the explorer yacht market, a touch-and-go landing pad is becoming more of a necessity than the extravagance it once was. Sure, a tender will get you from shore to superyacht in good time, but there's nothing that quite compares to touching down on the bow. We take a closer look at some of the best helidecks afloat...

Bold carries a certified helideck with a D value of 13 making it suitable for a craft such as the 3.2-tonne, twin-engine, eight-seat AgustaWestland AW109S Grand. Equipped with proper lighting and fire-safety gear, it is far from any structure that can create turbulence and features opening bulwarks to expand the deck width. While there is plenty of room to stow the craft on deck, the ocean environment is notoriously detrimental to delicate electronics, and big waves or wind can tip even a large heli over. So Bold transports its helicopter over long passages in a garage with a ceiling that adjusts in height to accommodate the craft with its rotors removed.

More about this yacht

Yachts for charter.

Designed in a military-inspired style by Espen Øino , the helideck area on 71 metre Lürssen Skat was the first to be penned by the designer for a superyacht. Located on the aft deck, the helipad has a dual purpose as a landing site for choppers and also providing shade to the deck space below.

Lürssen superyacht Ace features a foredeck helipad marked that bucks tradition by replacing the usual "H" sign with a giant "A" to represent her name. But this distinctive helideck is not actually the main landing site for arrivals from the air. Instead, landings would usually take place on support vessel Garçon , leaving the forward end of Ace, which features a swimming pool and sunbeds free for fun.

OceanXplorer

Once an oil survey vessel, the 87 metre OceanXplorer completed a refit by Damen in 2020 that turned her into the ultimate expedition yacht complete with high-tech toys, scientific research labs and Hollywood-standard editing facilities. This includes the addition of new helipad at the bow, which has been shifted three frames (1.8 metres) further forward, in order to create enough room for a proper hangar behind it which has been finished with a futuristic top-hinged door.

Ragnar is one of the coolest conversion projects to splash in recent years. Having started life as an icebreaking tug, even the harshest environments are a walk in the park for this Viking-inspired explorer. Unsurprisingly, Ragnar is jam-packed with some serious tools for exploring ashore, including an Airbus EC145 which sits atop a certified helideck, perfect for whisking thrill-seeking guests off for an afternoon of heli-skiing.

Octopus is perhaps one of the best known explorers on the water. The 126 metre Lürssen hit the water in 2003, commissioned by Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen, and was designed for far-flung global adventures. She has two helipads on board, one fore and one aft, with a hangar that can store two aircraft. Since her delivery, Octopus has explored the coast of Antarctica, traversed the Northwest Passage and discovered the wrecks of long-lost WW2 battleships off the Philippines.

Planet Nine

To prepare her for adventures in the Antarctic, Planet Nine's helipad was designed with a lifting platform that allows the aircraft to be stowed in the hangar beneath when not in use. This also enables the 73 metre explorer yacht to carry two helicopters at once, allowing guests to arrive on board by chopper while the owner's own helicopter is stowed safely away.

Yachts for sale

Espen Øino designed the 72.25 metre  Abeking & Rasmussen explorer yacht Cloudbreak with a cinema lounge right next to the helipad, so returning heli-skiers could step straight inside from the Bell 429 Global Ranger and watch GoPro footage of their day’s performance on the slopes.

The bottom of the pool on the legendary 81.27 metre Oceanco superyacht Alfa Nero rises up to deck level to become a helideck. It’s a clever use of space and the teak “H” design looks smart whether up or down.

Stella Maris

Yacht designer Espen Øino  re-imagined the typically utilitarian helicopter deck on VSY’s revolutionary 72 metre superyacht Stella Maris . Øino envisioned a superyacht helipad that was a focal point. Rather than trying to disguise the helicopter deck, it defines the exterior profile on Stella Maris , jutting out on the upper aft deck. When not welcoming helicopters, the huge deck is put to good use as a space for sunning and socialising.

Superyacht Helipads on Charter: What You Need to Know

A helipad is the ultimate luxury convenience for anyone in a hurry to start their dream yacht charter vacation, yet although it seems these days every self-respecting superyacht boasts a helipad - or two - few are actually commercially certified for helicopter landings. So, the question remains: is a non-certified helipad just a waste of space on a yacht charter?

To clear things up, we have compiled our guide on everything you need to know about superyacht helipads, as well as some of the best charter yachts already equipped with fully-certified helicopter platforms for those wishing to kick off their luxury yacht charter in style.

Helicopter lands onboard MY Suri

In this article:

A commercially-certified helipad is a must

Can you use a non-certified helipad on a yacht charter, private helipads, ‘touch and go’ helipad, charter guest benefits, 6 stand-out superyachts with a fully-certified helipad, 1. la datcha, 2. cloudbreak, 3. madsummer, 5. flying fox, interested in booking a luxury yacht charter.

For this classification, a superyacht helipad must be constructed and operated in line with the Maritime and Coastguard Agency’s (MCA) Large Commercial Yacht Code (LY3) Annex 6, which is basically the technical standards for helicopter landing areas, or helipads.

Helipad onboard MY Ragnar

This code sets out the basic rules governing the design, construction and operation of a helipad, which includes important factors such as a yacht’s load bearing capacity, obstacle clearance, consideration of airflow, safe access points, lighting, permanent deck markings and relevant crew training on helicopter operations.

nord yacht helipad

The responsibility for the survey and certification process for a helipad intended for commercial use is shared between the yacht’s registered flag state, the classification society and an aviation inspection body, such as the International Civil Aviation Organization ( ICAO ).

All in all, it doesn’t leave much wiggle room for winging it.

In a nutshell, no.

Helicopters are not permitted to touch down on a non-certified helipad onboard a yacht that is being used commercially, i.e. for charter, unless for a medical emergency such as the evacuation of sick or injured passengers.

nord yacht helipad

A helipad or helideck is considered a commercial operation if used to either;

  • Receive commercial charter helicopters, or
  • Transport charter guests

Therefore, even a yacht being used privately by its owner cannot receive a commercial charter helicopter if the helideck is not certified.

The ICAO have also weighed in on this point, stipulating that “all commercial air transport helicopters should land on certified helipads which must be built according to certain standards”.

Private helipads onboard a yacht adhere to less stringent rules and therefore do not have to meet the commercial standards for certification.

We find many owners are keen to incorporate a helideck, so long as it doesn't compromise the overall aesthetic of the yacht

Aft helipad with sun loungers onboard MY Luna B

That's not to say that non-certified helipads aren’t safe, as for the most part they will have been designed with the regulations in mind. However, more often a yacht’s visual appeal is advocated over the practicalities of helipad design. Chris Wood, a helidecks operations manager with Safeguard Helidecks Certification agrees: “We find many owner's are keen to incorporate a helideck, so long as it doesn't compromise the overall aethestic of the yacht."

This snazzy term has become synonymous with luxury superyachts, although it technically has no meaning. For clarity's sake, unless specified ‘touch and go’ helipads are not certified and therefore cannot be used for commercial operations i.e. yacht charters, with the exception of medical emergencies.

MY O'Ptasia

This can cause some confusion, especially as these types of helipads are often highlighted as a stand-out feature when marketing a yacht for charter.

A certified helipad onboard a yacht is a major bonus for yacht charterers wishing to expedite their travel time and arrive in style. Other advantages include;

  • Quick and easy access to and from the yacht
  • Avoids wasting time in heavy traffic
  • Avoids lengthy tender rides to yachts out on anchor
  • Provides an opportunity for guests to explore their surroundings further
  • Ideal jumping off point for extreme sports such as heli skiing
  • Useful for corporate charter events
  • Safe and comfortable transportation option

A helicopter flies over the Great Barrier Reef

We are seeing huge demand from yacht owners wanting to get their private helipads commercially certified for yacht charters

A heliskier jumping with a helicopter mid flight in the background

As for non-commercial helipads, it can also be used for medical emergencies.

In conclusion, a fully operational helideck is an increasingly desirable feature onboard a charter yacht, which has led to a growing demand for helipad certification. Chris Woods at Safeguard Helidecks Certification confirms this is one of their biggest growth areas: "We are seeing huge demand from yacht owners wanting to get their private helipads commercially certified for yacht charters".

So, although there are currently only a handful of charter yachts offering certified helipads right now, the future looks bright.

We have hand-picked a selection of top-rated superyachts equipped with a commerical landing platform for the ultimate luxury yacht charter.

Yacht Sales FAQ

What are the benefits of a superyacht with a helipad.

Having a helipad on board a superyacht is a highly desirable feature, especially with charter guests seeking an elevated experience at sea. There are several benefits, including convenience, easy access, privacy, and enhanced peace of mind in the event of an emergency.

Fast & private transportation

The primary benefit of a helipad on a yacht is that it allows for fast and private transportation of guests to and from the boat, avoiding lengthy tender rides and allowing guests to explore their surroundings further.

Ideal for extreme sports

A helipad can also be used for extreme sports, such as helicopter water skiing and heli-skiing, ensuring an incredible experience on the water.

Peace of mind

Having a fully certified helipad also provides enhanced peace of mind. Should there be, for example, a medical emergency, you have complete peace of mind that a swift transfer to a land-based medical centre can be quickly arranged.

Maximise a yacht's potential

A mega yacht with a fully certified helipad is highly desirable and will typically attract a higher resale value. Additionally, yachts with helipads are particularly sought-after charter yachts, enabling owners to maximise their boat’s income potential. Finally, a yacht's helipad can also be repurposed, and the large deck space cleared for a variety of activities, such as a dance floor at night and a recreational space during the day.

How big does a yacht have to be to have a helipad?

Generally speaking, a yacht must be at least 40-metres to accommodate a helipad on the bow. Boats under 40-metres generally do not have space to have a helipad on the bow, but clever design means that it may be possible to accommodate a touch-and-go helipad on the stern.

What is a touch-and-go helipad?

A touch-and-go helipad is a type of landing pad for helicopters that allows for quick take-offs and landings without stowing the aircraft on the yacht. It is becoming increasingly common on luxury superyachts and can be a significant bonus for yacht charterers, providing a quick and convenient way to access the vessel. Having a touch-and-go helipad on a yacht can also increase a boat's resale value and charter potential.

Can a yacht have more than one helipad?

Yes, it is possible to have more than one helipad on a yacht, depending on its size and layout. Multiple helicopter decks are often found on the world's largest mega yachts and expedition vessels, allowing for multiple helicopters to be stored at the same time. Having two helipads or more can be especially useful for vessels that accommodate a large number of guests or crew members who may need to travel to different locations at the same time.

What other amenities will a yacht with a helicopter deck have?

As helicopter decks are typically found on larger vessels, you'll also benefit from an enhanced selection of amenities. The world's finest superyachts typically boast voluminous beach clubs, swimming pools, spa facilities, cinema rooms, fully equipped gyms, VIP suites, and spacious salons and deck areas. They also typically boast a garage filled with tenders and a fantastic selection of water toys, including jet skis, water skis, inflatables, diving equipment, kayaks, submarines, and more.

The superyacht world is speculating that Mark Zuckerberg just bought this 118-meter boat

  • The 118-meter superyacht Launchpad made her maiden voyage last week.
  • The yacht world is speculating that her owner is Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg.
  • Here's what we know about the luxury vessel.

In the world of superyachts , privacy is the most valuable asset. It can be next to impossible to discern the details of a superyacht transaction — and that's particularly true if the vessel in question is worth nine figures.

Yet some in the boat blogging world are speculating that Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg is the new owner of Launchpad, a megayacht currently moored in Fort Lauderdale, Florida after she made her maiden voyage from Gibraltar to St Maarten last week. Launchpad clocks in at 118 meters long, about nine meters shorter than Jeff Bezos' superyacht Koru .

The transaction could not be confirmed, with yacht world insiders declining to share what they know and representatives for Zuckerberg not responding to a request for comment from Business Insider. In the past, reports about Zuckerberg owning superyacht Ulysses have proven false.

"It is Feadship's standard policy to never divulge any information about our yachts with reference to ownership, costs, or delivery, etc," Feadship, the ship's builder, wrote to BI. "Whether it is an 18-meter Feadship from the 1960s or a 118-meter Feadship from the 21st century, we do not share private information."

But Zuckerberg's name has been connected to Launchpad for a few months now, beginning in December when reports swirled that he visited Feadship's shipyard in the Netherlands.

Then, earlier in March, yachting bloggers like eSysman SuperYachts and Autoevolution started speculating that he officially snagged the boat, originally built for a sanctioned Russian businessman, at a $300 million price tag. (While that's a seemingly huge amount, it's still less than 0.2% of Zuckerberg's $177 billion net worth.)

Another clue that might point to US ownership is that the yacht bears the flag of the Marshall Islands, a US territory and commonplace for American buyers to register their ships, according to public marine tracking.

If Zuckerberg were to have bought Launchpad, he would join a cohort of superyacht-owning tech billionaires . Along with Bezos, the likes of Oracle cofounder Larry Ellison and Google cofounders Sergey Brin and Larry Page have purchased impressive boats with even more impressive amenities.

SuperYacht Times , an industry publication and intelligence platform, has some of the best images of the yacht. Photos show a swimming pool on her main deck and a large helipad.

While less is known of the interior, a vessel of her size can likely sleep dozens of guests and crew and may have amenities like an expansive gym where Zuckerberg could practice his jiu-jitsu or a spa with a massage area. We suspect there's also space for plenty of toys — which could include his viral hydrofoil foil .

Foreign leaders to land on helipads at the Kremlin

Moscow will soon sprout helicopter landing pads. A ban is still in force on helicopter flights over Moscow, but the city’s transport development program through 2016 envisages increased use of air transport, which is impossible without lifting the ban.

Helipads will be built on the rooftops of buildings housing government ministries, with due account taken of the need to preserve historical buildings. The measure is aimed at providing the country’s leaders with greater mobility and the opportunity to travel by air.

A helipad for the head of state at the Kremlin is ready, and the Presidential Administrative Department expects that it will also be used for visiting foreign leaders.

Putin helicopter

Flights over the city were banned back in the Soviet period. The restriction — imposed “to protect vital state facilities for national security purposes — is still in force. An exception has been made for the Ministry for Emergencies, the ambulance service, police and top national leaders. To date, the entire area within the Moscow Ring Highway is a restricted zone.

Since May 2 of this year, however, commercial flights have been allowed over the city at an altitude of at least 26,500 feet.

The decision to use Moscow air space was prompted by traffic congestion in the capital. Some traffic jams are caused by leaders’ motorcades, for which roads are blocked for long periods. It was therefore decided to remove the officials’ limousines from the streets.

The all-weather, 44,800-square-foot Helicopter Pad 1, built on the grounds of the Moscow Kremlin near the wall bordering Tainitsky Garden, can handle helicopters of various classes. There is no parking space for a standby helicopter in the Kremlin.

To vacate space for the pad, makeshift summer structures built about 20 years ago for the Federal Protection Services were pulled down and a bank was built up. The control center is located in Petrovskaya Tower.

Helicopters will come in to land either from the direction of Zamoskvoretsky Bridge or from the side of Zaradye (the area formerly occupied by the Rossiya Hotel). The pad has room for two helicopters.

The Presidential Administrative Department assures that helicopter flights will do no harm to the Kremlin walls and the Kremlin. Nevertheless, to be on the safe side, meters to monitor possible impact on the walls have been installed in the towers.

The helipad is on state-protected territory, but the Culture Ministry has given the go-ahead for construction, said Viktor Khrekov, press secretary of the Presidential Administrative Department.

Earlier, UNESCO had expressed concern about construction work in the Kremlin, which is on its world cultural heritage list. The press secretary said that, if international organizations had any questions, they should discuss them with the relevant government ministry.

Head of the Presidential Administrative Department, Vladimir Kozhin, said that the flight from Vnukovo Airport to the Kremlin would take 5–7 minutes by helicopter, not counting take-off and landing.

Russian aviation

The leaders of other countries visiting Russia will reach the center of Moscow in the same way. The Department notes that foreign heads of state visiting the Russian president at his Sochi residence often use Russian helicopters.

“This option is under consideration, but it all depends on protocol and the other countries’ rules,” Kozhin says. For example, the Chinese leader is not permitted to use helicopters during his foreign trips, for security reasons.

Security experts think that moving by air rather than over land would be safer for foreign guests and Russian leaders.

“The helicopters of our leaders have the latest radio-electronic, infra-red and optical equipment to neutralize any missile fired at the helicopter. In general, it is much more difficult to smuggle into Moscow and use shoulder-fired missiles than, for example, a grenade thrower, which could theoretically be used to hit the leaders’ motorcades,” says military expert Ilya Kramnik.

The head of the Presidential Administrative Department said that the project would cost 200 million rubles ($6.1 million).

The Russian government’s building also received a helipad this year. Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev uses a light, Italian-made, Agusta AW-139 helicopter. Vladimir Putin will fly to the Kremlin onboard heavy Mi-8helicopters.

The Ministry for Emergencies has a helipad on Vatutina Street, and a pad will soon be built on the roof of the Defense Ministry on Znamenka Street. Floating helipads developed by the Helicopter Industry Association may soon appear.

Under that project, seven movable landing stages are to be set up for air taxis and rescue helicopters. The first floating helipad is to be built on the Khimki Reservoir this year.

Business centers such as Crocus City and Victory Plaza have been building their own helipads. Moscow City, as a business area, will have two helipads.

The Moscow City transport development program through 2016 envisages development of air transport in the capital, as well as a joint project with the Transport Ministry to build a network of helipads — 10 within the city limits and 40 outside Moscow.
