BENETEAU: A LONG STORY THAT BEGAN IN 1884 

The first BENETEAU boats sailed from the shipyards of Croix-de-Vie over 136 years ago. Best sailing boots for offshore and coastal sailing

If you go anywhere near water you'll need something to keep trench-foot at bay. Sue Pelling and Fox Morgan select some of their best sailing boots to keep your feet dry and warm.

The more you look into the subject of purchasing the the best sailing boots – whether for offshore sailing or coastal cruising , the more complex it appears to become, particularly with so many options on the market at hugely varying price tags.

To simplify the matter, remember that regardless of what type of use they’ll have – offshore or lighter coastal cruising – essentially there are three important points to consider: safety (good grip and flexibility), comfort, and how waterproof they are likely to be. There are, of course, other considerations, such as budget, overall appearance, weight/bulkiness, and internal quick drying qualities because inevitably they will get wet at some point but consider the finer detail once you’ve ticked off the important factors.

While many brands of sailing boots are gender neutral, more and more companies are now recognising the demand for gender specific boots, and/or wider fit options. Although there is a good selection of stylish nubuck leather boots on the market, don’t rule out some of the more traditional rubber boots, which have extreme waterproof qualities, and generally lower budget.

Reasons to avoid • top end of the price scale for boots • May be a little too bulky for everyday casual use

Ok, the thing is, I absolutely love these boots. I bought my own pair of these a couple years ago and they have been pretty much the best thing to put on my leg ends through summer and winter.  They aren’t totally without mild cursing when I’m trussed up like a thanksgiving turkey and trying to get my salopette pant leg tucked into these gators has had me swearing and sweating a bit during summer months when the weather is foul but the temperature not too cold. The soles are grippy as heck, I feel absolute confidence in these as I’ve run about up on the foredeck trying to sort out a jammed third reef in some particularly sporty conditions coming back across the English channel this past summer. The ankle support is good but allows good articulation without chafe. The highly adjustable inner boot means even my skinny chicken legs can get a snug fit and for thos with my ample calves, you’ll get a good fit too. Beware though, that the outer gator doesn’t have quite so much luxury of adjustability. So if you do have totally hench calf muscles, you might swear more than me pulling those gators back up. With the minor quibbles aside, these have got to be the most comfortable sailing boots I’ve had in many a year. I like the little touches too to make them more useable, which includes the small rubber heal spur to allow one foot to grip the other when pulling these boots off. for more images of my own boots and how they have faired after some serious dunking you’ll do worse than to head over to my review of them- Musto Ocean Racer Sailing Boots reviewed . I get particularly excited when a manufacturer produces a decent spec boot avaliable in sizes that fit us folks with little (or littleish) feet. Yes, they’re pricey. and yes they’re technical, but they are also excellent. Thankyou Musto for making a proper gnarly sailing boot that women can wear as well as men.

Best for serious racers

Reasons to avoid • Fairly pricey

If you are a serious racer, then the Gore-Tex Race Boot, which has been engineered by Musto, using premium, full grain leather and ballistic nylon in the upper, is definitely an option to consider. Yes, it appears pricy, but as with all Musto technical clothing, you can be sure you are getting the ultimate piece of kit to cover all offshore/cruising disciplines.

Although we have yet to put these boots to the test, Musto say the Gore-Tex footwear membrane provides complete waterproof protection and continuous climate control. The boot is also lightweight, shock-absorbing, and has Grip Deck rubber and a Grip Flex tread to ensure exceptional, multi-directional traction on deck.

There’s a lot to be said for choosing a pair of boots from a company that’s passionate about living up to its name as far as design of safety marine products goes. As well as serving the leisure marine sector with quality safety gear for many years, Crewsaver specialises in advanced, marine survival products for commercial markets.

Not surprising then, the Crewsaver Long Boots Sailing 07 could be just the thing for really keeping your feet dry. They are essentially rubber wellies designed to keep you safe and dry. Thanks to a drawstring and gusset at the top, water ingress is kept to the minimum, and the specially constructed inner ensures feet are kept as warm and comfortable as possible. Finally it goes without saying as far as safety goes, the razor-cut sole offers very good grip on deck.

Helly Hansen Women’s Nordvik 2 Rubber Boots

Best for cruising

Reasons to buy • Lightweight • Women specific • Value for money

Reasons to avoid • Lack of comfort for long-term deck use

A classic-looking nautical yellow welly that is ideal for coastal sailing/ less harsh conditions. Not that it wouldn’t stand up to extreme conditions, but for long periods on deck in the wet, this short, lightweight, rubber boot from Helly Hansen may not be quite so comfortable as other technical boots on the market.

The Women’s Nordvik 2 does however, have all the main attributes expected from this renowned sailing clothing specialist, including siped vulcanised rubber outsole for traction. As this boot is also specially designed for women, those with narrow feet may find they get a good fit.

Decathlon Aigle Glénan Sailing Boots

Best for fit

Reasons to buy • Extensive R&D • Tall, close fit • Smart • Value for money

• Non moisture-wicking

As with all sailing kit produced for Decathlon, the Aigle Glénan sailing boot in classic nautical blue not only offers value for money, but is also smart-looking, 100% waterproof and has non-slip, lugged deck rubber soles.

As a company, Decathlon prides itself on its thorough R&D in collaboration with sailing professionals, which means you can be sure it’ll be a product fit for purpose. As with all the boots listed here, we’ve not tested it but according to customer reviews, the Glénan is a popular choice and comfortable. However, like many other basic rubber-style wellies that have rubber-backed absorbent foam insoles, this boot may not offer as much day-long comfort as some of the other, more expensive, technical brands.

Maindeck Tall Grey Rubber Sailing Boot

Best for value

Reasons to avoid • Grey colour option only

Avoiding water ingress is important particularly if you plan to spend long periods of time on the water. Thankfully, like the Crewsaver Long Boot, the Maindeck Tall Grey Rubber Boot is designed with a drawstring gusset top, which certainly helps stem the flow. Its non-slip, non-marking sole is also a plus point.

And, unlike some of the other rubber-welly style boots on the market, the Maindeck has a quick dry, moisture wicking lining, a reinforced heel, instep and toe, and a removable EVA (ethylene vinyl acetate) cushioned insole for added comfort.

Overall, this is a good low budget option for looks, function and versatility.

Last week, the last BAVARIA VISION 42 was completed in Giebelstadt. On Friday morning, part of the BAVARIA YACHTS team gathered to give her a fitting farewell. The sailing yacht celebrated its premiere at the boot Düsseldorf in 2012 and the almost 13 metre long yacht was built in the shipyard for just over 12 years.

Here’s a novel design we’re eager to view. Following the recently launched Jeanneau Yachts 60 and 65, and yet offering something totally different, the Jeanneau Yachts 55 features a highly innovative layout, which focuses on the privacy of the owner.

We all like our own space sometimes, another reason behind the popularity of multihulls. Never afraid to try new things, Jeanneau has created a full apartment for the owner – by providing separate companionways giving direct access to the aft guest cabins, everything from the main companionway forward can be used for the owner’s space.

The split cockpit is also unusual. The forward end is for sail handling, under the protection of a fixed arch and sprayhood or fixed windscreen, while the entire aft section is dedicated to sun lounging space.

Contest 49CS & 50CS

A joint world premiere of two brand new yachts, the sisterships of the same hull in different formats, will be quite the statement from the Dutch yard Contest Yachts. Where the 49CS is a natural step up from the 42CS (see full report page 58), the 50CS takes its centre cockpit cues from the 55CS, with a more conventional centre cockpit layout with aft master suite.

It’s highly unusual to have such different options on the same hull, particularly on yachts designed for bluewater cruising. Both versions still offer three cabins, two heads, plus the option of electric propulsion.

Nordship 420DS

When you have a niche in which you’re top of the game, there’s little need to shake things up too often. Yet after years of relying on its staple models, Danish deck saloon specialists Nordship had a busy 2022, launching two new designs, a 500DS Custom and this 420DS. We were due to sail the 500DS Custom for European Yacht of the Year trials, but a problem with the mainsail furler unfortunately meant it missed that window. But we’re itching to see the 420DS, which will make its debut at Düsseldorf, and is a size that sits at the heart of what this yard does best.

Lars Buchwald has given the coachroof windows more of a modern wraparound look, but otherwise expect signature features including panoramic views from the deck saloon, a sumptuous aft cabin and top quality mahogany joinerwork.

Saffier SE 24 Lite

They just keep getting better! First comes fun, planing performance whether solo or crewed, but then comes so much more from these Dutch daysailer specialists. Saffier’s brand new SE 24 Lite is a lightweight (1,200kg), stable (450kg in the keel), sporty design, which should prove simple to sail alone or with family or friends thanks to the large, uncluttered and well organised cockpit.

It’s trailable, can be hoisted by a single point and is simple and quick to rig. And it’s current: there is enough integrated solar panel capacity designed in to charge the 3.5kW Torqeedo battery for the electric drive (estimated to be 70% lighter than diesel propulsion). The instrument displays can be removed to recharge at home or in the car, and if you fancy staying aboard overnight, there are two berths below decks.

Elan Impression 43

Elan’s impression range has long been popular for Med cruising and charters, as they are voluminous yet fun and easy to sail. And while the Slovenian yard has brought out some cracking new designs recently, such as the GT6 in 2020 and the E6 last year, its Impression range of cruisers has needed something fresh. Long standing Elan designer Rob Humphreys has drawn a good looking hull shape for this new deck saloon, which sports twin rudders and a 1.95m L-shape keel as standard. And after its success with the E6, Pininfarina was commissioned for the styling. The spacious rustic oak interior is offered with three or four cabins with two heads.

Elan was an early leader in the use of vacuum-infusion and has employed its Vacuum Assisted Infusion Lamination (VAIL) technology on the hull, deck and stringers for a stiff hull and consistent finish. An optional bowsprit extends LOA from 43ft 8in to 44ft 7in.

As it was designed to replace Dufour’s exceedingly popular 360, this new model was given the 37 badge, but is in fact 4ft shorter on deck. Not that you know that once on board – thanks to modern hull design, the voluminous bow and wide stern provides ample space on and below deck.

It’s also really fun to sail. Available with three different winch and deck setups, badged Easy, Ocean and Performance, this is a European Yacht of the Year 2023 nominee in the Family Cruiser category – see our issue next month for the winners and more on the nominees.

Does Boatsetter screen renters?

Yes. We use a system called Cognito to ensure that payment information matches the renter's identity. We also require renters taking out a captained boat to be at least 18 years old and on a bareboat to be at least 25 years old.

Is listing my boat on Boatsetter free?

Yes! Listing a boat is completely free. We only take a commission when your boat is rented. We only make money when you do!

What if I'm not comfortable having a renter drive my boat?

If you are not comfortable having a renter drive your boat, we have an expansive network of licensed and experienced captains. Once your boat is listed, you can filter through our network of captains and favorite captains in your area that you would like to operate your boat.

Boot Düsseldorf

Four exceptional yachts presented in a prestigious setting.

Absolute Yachts returns to Germany for Boot Düsseldorf , presenting four models from the Absolute fleet; 48 Coupé , 52 Fly , Navetta 52 and Navetta 58 . With estimated attendance at about 237,000 visitors and over 1,500 exhibitors, Boot is the world’s largest yacht and watersports trade show, held at the Messe Düsseldorf trade fair district.

The 48 Coupé – “The Absolute horizon” – embodies the latest and sportiest trends of luxury yachting. It combines the impeccable comfort with a dynamic profile , distinctive design, and a constant focus on the nautical experience. This is guaranteed by the excellent visibility provided by the open bulwarks and the glazed balustrades astern. Inside, panoramic views are assured by the exceptionally large areas of glazing both in the salon , and in the three staterooms below decks, with their large hull windows ensuring excellent natural lighting. The level of comfort in all the interior spaces is at Absolute’s characteristically high standards of luxury. Sustainability , always a key factor in the brand’s design outlook, can be seen in the solar panels on the roof and in the electrically-opening windows , which make it possible to activate natural air circulation, reducing energy usage for air conditioning.

The Absolute 52 Fly , presented in 2023, is the newest yacht in the Flybridge range. This yacht has been named the “Absolute direction”, because it has introduced an entirely new direction in luxury yachts, including a cutting-edge design with features that are normally found only on much larger yachts. In fact, alongside the characteristics that hallmark all Absolute yachts, such as ample headroom , floors with a minimum of steps, and the extensive use of sliding doors , the truly astonishing feat in the 52 Fly is the massive space throughout. The salon is roomy and beautifully detailed, served by a superbly-equipped galley that even has a large pantry and a full-height fridge-freezer. The full-beam owner stateroom is located in the bow location to ensure privacy and quiet, and it has a fine marble bathroom with extensive storage units. The VIP stateroom midships can be considered as a second master stateroom, with generous space and impeccable finish. The third guest cabin has twin berths, with good headroom and an electrically-operated system that enables its transformation into a double berth. In addition, there is a multi-function crew cabin aft. Outside, there are multiple deck areas that provide space an openness including a generously sized cockpit terrace that is distinctive thanks to its open bulwarks. Above, the superbly designed flybridge is conveniently equipped with free-standing furniture, a wet bar, and galley to enhance the experience for you and your guests. Finally, the bow area is comfortably outfitted with a three-person sunlounger, teak table, and settes for the perfect ambiance.

Navetta 52 – known as the “Absolute Leader” – was designed to ensure high levels of cruising comfort in all conditions. The side decks are protected above by a cantilevered superstructure and at the side by sturdy bulwarks, and the cockpit terrace is also entirely covered by the flybridge. The same all-weather appeal can be seen on the foredeck , where the settee is shaded behind the loungers for soaking up the sun. The flybridge is exceptionally large, a privileged location for around-the-clock enjoyment, with a dinette, an outdoor galley, and an aft terrace area with moveable seating for maximum flexibility. The flybridge helm is accompanied by sofas for sailing with friends. Inside the main salon , the vast windows are accompanied by Absolute’s skill in sophisticated, minimalist interior design. The galley is positioned so that it can serve both the salon and the cockpit terrace, and if required it can be separated by electrically-operated vertical glass screens. The main helm station is modern and ergonomic, with a door opening onto the side deck so that the captain can use the joystick when outside during mooring.

Navetta 58 , known as the “Absolute Appeal”, is a yacht very different from the traditional design standards, making it a true leader in its category. Its plumb bow and distinctive architecture ensure generous dimensions , as can be seen on the flybridge . This space has an aft area for relaxation, a central area with dinette and grill, and a flybridge helm station forward at the bow that includes additional seating comprising of two L-shaped settees. On the main deck, the cockpit terrace is furnished with a sofa and dining table, and it provides access to the salon , where the galley – whose facilities include a large worktop, a full-sized fridge, a four-burner hob, a sink and a dishwasher – is located just aft of the principal helm station. Below decks, accommodations consist of a master stateroom midships and a VIP suite in the bows, both with pillarless windows, spacious storage, en-suite bathrooms, and sophisticated furnishings. A third guest cabin has twin beds, seamlessly transformable to a double berth.
