16 Most Affordable Small Boats With Cabins (Various Sizes & Speeds!)

Explore top affordable small boats with cabins - perfect for travelers seeking value & comfort on the water. Ideal picks for various sizes & speeds!

small yacht with cabin

It’s difficult to find an affordable small boat with a cabin as even boats without cabins are often pricey. Boats with extra amenities such as cabins, kitchens, and showers are generally expensive, but that’s not always the case. So, what are the best affordable small boats with cabins?

The best affordable small boats with cabins are the Sea Ray Sun Sport 230, Stringray 208cr Cuddy Cabin, and Cutwater 242 Sport Coupe. You can also save money with the Jeanneau 1095 NC and Pro-Line 20 Express which both have roomy cabins at a great price. Otherwise, consider the Jet Capsule Mini Yacht and Dusky 227 Fish Cruiser.

Each of these small boats with cabins falls below the price point that you typically find on the market. However, that doesn’t mean that they lack amenities that make a boat so appealing, to begin with. Follow along as we explore the most affordable small boats with cabins and highlight their features.

Affordable Small Boats With Cabins

Finding small boats with cabins often comes at a high cost that many people are unwilling to meet. Cabins add plenty of value to boats, and it’s hard for many people to justify the extra cost . Luckily, there are many affordable small boats with cabins that don’t come at premium costs.

1. Sea Ray Sun Sport 230

small yacht with cabin

Sea Ray makes many affordable boats, but the Sun Sport 230 is their best one that features a cabin. There are several models of the Sun Sport 230 with different floor plans that are 19’-40’ long . It’s hard to tell that this boat has a cabin from the outside because of its simple layout, but you can find it below the deck.

Below-deck cabins are the best use of space, especially if you are looking for a small, affordable boat. The cabin is spacious and features comfortable seating with cushions for lounging or sleeping. This is the main appeal of what is an otherwise impressive-yet-standard boat.

Boats with cabins generally average $75,000 but can exceed $100,000 in most cases. Luckily, the Sea Ray Sun Sport starts at $61,995 which is quite low for a boat with a cabin. That is a bargain when you consider the 50-gallon engine and world-renowned performance.

2. Stingray 208CR Cuddy Cabin

small yacht with cabin

The Stingray 208cr Cuddy Cabin is the smallest boat in the Cuddy series that features a cabin. It only measures 20’ and 8’ long which is modest for a boat with so many features. You can comfortably fit up to 9 people on this boat as long as the onboard weight doesn’t exceed 1,715 pounds including cargo .

A key feature of the Stingray 208cr Cuddy Cabin is that the cabin features a window. This should be a standard feature for any small boat with a cabin, but it’s not. You can easily fit several people in the cabin whether you are just lounging or going to sleep.

The cabin can fit a queen or king-sized bed and still leave some space on either side. It also features a toilet and plenty of bow storage which is necessary for a boat of this size. Finally, this boat comes with a 25-quart igloo cooler which makes it easy to embark on overnight trips on the water.

3. Cutwater 242 Sport Coupe

small yacht with cabin

The Cutwater 242 Sport Coupe measures 23’ and 7” long and boasts a comfortable cabin. It features a Yamaha engine, so you know that you can rely on a smooth and consistent performance. The 300-horsepower engine is the highlight of the Cutwater 242 Sport Coupe beside the cabin.

It also includes a microwave and Kenyon grill, so you don’t have to return to shore to eat. While it is considered a small boat compared to most liveaboard vessels, its layout isn’t cramped at all. You can expect to spend $119,937 for a Cutwater 242 Sport Coupe which is affordable for a luxury vessel like this with a cabin .

4. Jeanneau 1095 NC

small yacht with cabin

There are several options for the Jeanneau 1095 NC depending on your budget. This boat primarily appeals to families or seafarers who often go out with large groups. You can buy a Jeanneau 1095 NC that has 2 or 3 cabins depending on what you are looking for.

Both models feature a Yamaha Twin 300 horsepower engine which is quite powerful for a boat of this size. It measures 34’ long which still falls into the small boat category because it is under 40’ long . One major benefit of this boat is that it has a 106-gallon capacity which eliminates the need to refuel too often .

You don’t have to worry about strong winds or harsh waves with the Jeanneau 1095 NC. The bow thruster makes it easy to navigate inclement weather and rough water without a problem.

5. Dusky 227 Fish Cruiser

small yacht with cabin

Coming in at 22’ and 7” long, the Dusky 227 Fish Cruiser has more bells and whistles than it looks at first glance. While it’s a relatively small boat, there is nothing small about the power that this Dusky boat has to offer. The 230-horsepower engine is a perfect example of this, and that’s quite powerful for an affordable boat with a cabin.

Dusky paid attention to detail when they made this boat between the hydraulic steering, storage, and navigation lights. You get a 60-gallon fuel capacity with this boat which isn’t huge, but it’s perfect for a boat of this size. The cabin includes comfortable cushions, lights, and a solid door for privacy.

The best part about the boat is that it’s so attainable and affordable. It only costs $55,000 which is an incredible deal for a boat that performs this well.

6. Pro-Line 20 Express

small yacht with cabin

Pro-Line is a well-respected name in the marine world, and the 20 Express easily explains why that’s the case. It measures 20’ long and can hold 7 people at a time as long as they don’t exceed the weight limit combine with the cargo . This boat is just as much about fun as it is about practicality, as evidenced by the dive platform.

The tempered glass windshield means that you won’t have to worry about heavy winds throwing debris at the boat. Fishers particularly gravitate towards this vessel, but it applies to any boat enthusiast. The 27-gallon live well means that you can store as much fish as you can catch in a day without a problem.

The 200-horsepower engine is more than enough for a boat of this size and weight. Pro-Line crafted this boat with a small cabin that is comfortable enough to sleep 1-2 people. It may not be the perfect small boat with a cabin for large families, but it is perfect for groups of friends planning a weekend trip out on the water.

7. Atlas Boat Works Pompano 21

small yacht with cabin

Consider the Atlas Boat Works Pompano 21 if you don’t want to spend a fortune on a boat with a cabin. Atlas Boat Works has made many amazing boats in various sizes, but the Pompano 21 is their standout model. It is 21’ and 3” long so it’s easy to transport without a custom trailer .

This unique small-yet-wide boat features a hard top which makes sleeping much more comfortably. The hard top also comes in handy if you simply want more privacy so that passengers can relax in the cabin. You get a sink, comfortable galley, and cozy cabin with this relatively small vessel.

The 34-gallon fuel capacity is enough for most seafarers that don’t plan to go out too far. This boat also features convenient ventilation hatches that come in handy on hot and humid days. You can purchase an Atlas Boat Works Pompano 21 for only $27,000.

8. Rinker 270 Express Cruiser

small yacht with cabin

Consider the Rinker 270 Express Cruiser if you want a small boat with a cabin that can sleep multiple people. Up to 4 people can comfortably sleep in the Rinker 270 Express Cruiser which is hard to find in a small boat. It is nearly 29’ long with a spacious cabin that has over 6’ of headroom.

You get everything that you need for a weekend trip with this boat. This vessel includes a microwave, fridge, stove, and plenty of onboard storage . A new model starts at $27,995 but used Rinker 270s typically cost $18,000-$22,000 depending on the condition.

The Bluetooth stereo system makes it easy to turn this vessel into a party boat with the touch of a button. Few boats of this size offer as much value between the cabin, entertainment value, and appliances that are included.

9. Campion Allante 635

small yacht with cabin

Boats made out of fiberglass have become the gold standard, and the Campion Allante 635 should explain why that’s the case. Everything from the deck to the cabin is comfortable and meant to accommodate multiple people. The cabin isn’t too large, but you can easily lounge or sleep in it with up to 3 people.

You can leave the cabin as is and use it as a lounge or convert it into a sleeping space. Converting it to a sleeping space takes less than 5 minutes and is worth it for overnight trips. The 60-gallon fuel tank is appropriate for the Campion Allante 635 because it’s not meant for long journeys.

The 250-horsepower engine can let you maintain a consistent 35-mile-per-hour cruising speed . Some people want more power out of a boat, but small boats with cabins don’t generally need more.

10. Campion EX18 OB SC

small yacht with cabin

The Campion EX18 OB SC is another excellent offering from the brand, and its cabin is comparable to the Allante 635. This small boat is only 19’ and 6” which makes it easy to transport before you even set out on the water. Its dry weight is 1,990 pounds before you embark on your journey.

The Campion EX18 OB SC can fit 7 people onboard at once which makes it perfect for families. It is a popular boat among the fishing community because of features such as tackle boxes, live bait storage, and rod holders. However, it also appeals to enthusiasts who simply want to cruise around and have fun on the water.

The cabin is roomy and can fit at least 2 people overnight without a problem . Otherwise, you can fit 4 or more people in the cabin if you simply use it as a lounge. The possibilities are endless, and the Campion EX18 OB SC is worth the $81,521 price tag.

11. Jet Capsule Mini Yacht

small yacht with cabin

You will have a hard time finding a small boat with a cabin that boasts such a unique appearance. From the outside, the Jet Capsule Mini Yacht looks like something from a sci-fi film. It measures 24 feet long and has the most unique hard top of any boat on this list .

The only downside of the Jet Capsule Mini Yacht is that it doesn’t specifically come with a cabin if you buy it outright. However, it has the space for a cabin, so you can modify it via a dealer or the manufacturer to include one. Jet Capsule lets you add benches, chairs, and sofas or clear space for a mattress.

The windows react to the sunlight and brighten or darken depending on the outdoor brightness. Cruise through the water at up to 40 mph while someone relaxes in the custom cabin with your Jet Capsule Mini Yacht.

12. Scout 350 LXF

small yacht with cabin

Boaters on a budget that don’t need too much space can appreciate the Scout 350 LXF. The cabin may not be too big, but it’s proportional to the size of the boat. Luckily, the galley makes up for it with plenty of space and a small dinette that is perfect for a mid-day meal or nightcap.

This certainly isn’t a liveaboard boat, but you could easily spend 1-3 nights on the Scout 350 LXF without a problem. It is much longer than it is wide which explains the limited cabin space on this vessel. The Scout 350 LXF is just under 35’ long which is nearly at the threshold of what is considered a small boat .

Speed is another key factor to consider about the Scout 350 LXF. Unlike most smaller boats, this vessel can reach speeds up to 70 mph which makes it a force to be reckoned with.

13. Bayliner 285 SB

small yacht with cabin

Few 28-foot-long boats are as impressive as the Bayliner 285 SB. You have everything that you need with this boat as it is stocked with a pantry, stove, refrigerator, microwave, and stove. The galley on the Bayliner 285 SB is every bit as impressive as the cabin itself.

None of the other small boats on this list include a cabin that can fit 6 people in it . This is a major selling point of the Bayliner 285 SB, especially for seafarers that bring their friends and families out on the water . You won’t be able to reach speeds of 40 mph, but that isn’t necessary unless you’re trying to race or cruise at high speeds anyway.

Another selling point of the Bayliner 285 SB is the cockpit which is roomy enough for multiple people. This comes in handy if you have several passengers that are along for a day trip and don’t plan to sleep on the vessel.

14. Grady White Express 330

small yacht with cabin

The Grady White Express 330 appeals to both novice and expert boat enthusiasts seeking an affordable vessel with a cabin. It measures 33’ and 6” and is notable for its powerful engine. The portside galley, comfortable cabin, and roomy cockpit all contribute to a boat that can comfortably fit many people.

Many seafarers describe the Grady White Express 330 as a liveaboard boat which is understandable given the onboard space . The 850-horsepower engine may seem like overkill, but it’s necessary to move such a heavy boat. This boat weighs more than it looks like at just under 11,000 pounds before it gets wet.

While the Grady White Express 330 is pricier than some of the other boats on this list, it’s also larger. With that said, it still falls into the category of small boats within the boating community. It starts at $85,000 if you can find a used one, and it’s worth every penny.

15. Boston Whaler Conquest 285

small yacht with cabin

Coming in at just under 28’, the Boston Whaler Conquest 285 is worth considering if you want an affordable boat with a cabin . You get a 200-gallon fuel capacity, a roomy cockpit, and many customization options with this boat. Boston Whaler lets you customize the cabin to your likely and choose a floorplan that is ideal for you.

Like all Boston Whaler boats, the Conquest 285 is unsinkable. That alone should be a huge selling point because safety supersedes all the luxury features that a boat has to offer. You can drive half of the boat if it gets cut in half in an emergency, but neither half will sink.

The cabin doubles as a lounge and sleeping area which is nice if you are simply out on the water for the day. Used Boston Whaler Conquest 285s rarely exceed $48,000 which is a bargain even if they have many miles on them.

16. Four Winns Vista 238

small yacht with cabin

While this boat is no longer in production, it has a comfortable cabin and fits the categories of small and affordable. You can easily find a used Four Winns Vista 238 for $11,000 or under which makes it one of the cheapest boats on this list . However, this 23’ long boat can still proudly fit in amongst many of the newer vessels in this guide

The 4 bunks on this boat mean that it has more room for people to sleep than the average small boat with a cabin. This is essential if you have a large family or plan to depart on a trip with friends. It also includes a full bathroom with a sink, toilet, and shower which is hard to find on an affordable vessel.

You can also easily cook fresh fish on this vessel because it has a cooktop and refrigerator. The engine maxes out at 38 knots which is the equivalent of 43.7 mph, and that’s impressive for a budget boat. Don’t be discouraged that it’s no longer in production because boats can last for several decades if they are well-maintained.

How Much Does a Boat With a Cabin Cost?

small yacht with cabin

A boat with a cabin typically costs at least $50,000 on the low end. On average, a boat with a cabin costs $75,000, but even that is considered somewhat low. Boats that feature cabins often exceed $100,000 because of the construction, materials, and how much weight they add to the vessel .

Luxury boats with cabins rarely fall below $100,000 and often cost $250,000 or more. With that said, boats with cabins have more resale value than a standard fishing boat or cruiser. Boats that include cabins include cuddy cabins, yachts, sailboats, cabin cruisers, and trawlers.

You can also modify an existing boat to include a cabin directly through a retailer in many cases. Many manufacturers produce boats with an optional hard top add-on that can transport part of it into a cabin.

What Are the Best Affordable Small Boats With Cabins?

The best affordable small boats with cabins include the Grady White Express 330, Boston Whaler Conquest 285, and Sea Ray Sun Sport 230. You can’t go wrong with affordable boats like the Bayliner 285 SB, Scout 350 LXF, and Stingray 208cr Cuddy Cabin . Brands like Campion sell many affordable small boats with cabins like the Allante 635 and EX18 OB SC.

If you’re on a budget, you should also consider the Jeanneau 1095 NIC, Dusky 227 Fish Cruiser, and Pro-Line 20 Express. You don’t have to spend a fortune on affordable small boats with cabins like the Atlas Boat Works Pompano 21 or Rinker 270 Express Cruiser either. Each of these boats holds up well to luxury boats with cabins, but at a fraction of the cost.

Best cabin cruisers: 5 of the most versatile options under 30ft

  • Top stories

Serial boat owner Elliott Maurice picks out 5 of the best cabin cruisers and explains what makes them stand out in this highly competitive market…

Some of the most successful cabin cruiser designs can trace their lineage back to the ‘weekender’ style boats from the likes of Chris-Craft , which originated in 1960s America with the aim of accommodating a whole family for a weekend away.

The 1960 Chris Craft Cavalier 25 offered a galley, complete with a sink and gas hob, enclosed head, a forward V berth cabin and convertible saloon with a drop-down table creating a midships berth suitable for children.

Allowing weekends away with facilities only previously available from larger purpose-built motor yachts, the cabin cruiser concept took off.

The 1980s saw some excellent boats appear from the likes of Fairline with models such as the Mirage 29 Aft Cabin and the Holiday 23. These boats brought weekend cruising comfort to the rivers, estuaries, and coastlines of Europe in huge numbers.

Now over 50 years later the choice of small family cabin cruisers is excellent, with offerings from both sides of the Atlantic providing the ideal solution, even offering extended liveaboard cruising in a trailerable sized boat.

When considering what is the best cabin cruiser boat for you, there are a few key things to consider. Where do you plan to use it? A coastal boat will require significantly more horsepower than a river boat.

How long will you spend on board? Liveaboard cabin cruisers will prioritize interior comfort over outside lounging space. Personal style and price will also be key guiding factors.

I have selected what I consider to be some of the best weekender and compact cabin cruisers available on the market today.

The Marlin version of the Jeanneau Merry Fisher 895 won our 2020 Motor Board Award for Best Wheelhouse or Cockpit Cruiser

Jeanneau Merry Fisher 895 Sport

Best all-round cabin cruiser

A great starting point and overall, a great boat. This nearly 29ft long cabin cruiser (including pulpit and outboard ) offers everything a small family could want for weekends away, with two light and comfortable berths in separate double cabins, an excellent helm and cockpit with a comfortable dinette seating four.

You also get full standing headroom in the ensuite, with a pullout shower, and all of this is accommodated in a sturdy and capable hull. Power options range from a single 175hp outboard up to twin 250hp engines, so the Merry Fisher can be powered to suit both inland river and coastal conditions.

Extras include bow thruster, reverse cycle heat and air air-conditioning and, as the name suggests, plenty of fishing options. The light and airy Jeanneau can be upgraded significantly to well over $160,000. However even at the starting price of $130,000 the 895 Sport makes an excellent and versatile small family cabin cruiser.

Best center consoles under 30 feet: Latest models combine seakeeping and performance

Best bowriders: 6 top options over 25ft for versatile open deck cruising, ranger tug r29s.

Best liveaboard cabin cruiser

A modern American classic, the R29S is a marvel for its size. Designed more as a small ship than a normal pleasure boat, the R29 is only offered with a single 320hp Volvo D4 diesel engine. Bow and stern thrusters are fitted as standard for easy docking.

The Ranger is an expensive option starting at a lofty $350,000, however it is capable of comfortably taking a couple bluewater cruising around the Bahamas or on the 5,500-mile trip around the American Great Loop. Featuring curved glass wheelhouse windows with opening glass roof hatches, the R29S has an excellent helm with superb visibility and a robust, seaworthy hull.

Accommodation can be heated or air conditioned for cruising comfort, all the while the D4 is sipping just 2gph at 7 knots, giving a cruising range of 500 miles. But there’s enough top end to punch a tide when you need to – the top speed on the R29S is a healthy 23.4 knots.

The comprehensive standard inventory includes 12in Garmin MFD, AIS and xHD radar, while optional extras include dingy and davits, generator, solar panels, ice maker, TVs in the saloon and master, and even an aft docking station.

Although the Ranger can sleep up to six, it is built to accommodate two in long distance comfort usually only equalled by boats in the 40ft+ class.

Finnmaster-pilot-8-cabin-boat-test-review-running-shot

We likened the Pilot 8 to a seagoing SUV in our 2020 review

Finnmaster Pilot 8

Best high performance cabin cruiser

Due to the tough local weather conditions, Scandinavian boats are built to a higher standard than most brands, and the Finnmaster is no exception. Exceptionally rugged, the Pilot 8 is an extremely capable and fast sea boat, with accommodation for up to six people.

The 27ft 6in Pilot 8 can reach a speed of 43.5 knots flat out, with power coming from twin 200hp outboard engines. Starting at around €150,000, the Pilot 8 is top notch in terms of its fit and finish throughout.

With its 18in Garmin MFD, optional joystick control, rugged forward canting windscreen and bucket helm seat, the helm of the Pilot 8 is well suited to making the most of the boat’s performance capabilities.

What’s more, a handy side door leading off the asymmetric wheelhouse to a wide side deck provides excellent access to the fore deck for docking maneuvers.

More compact and performance orientated than its French rivals, the Finnmaster is still capable of accommodating four people in comfort, with a cockpit galley that features a diesel-powered hob, microwave, sink and refrigerator.

A decent enclosed heads with pull out shower and two separate sleeping cabins bely the boat’s performance capabilities, and with options like a high-end Fusion stereo, diesel heating and HD radar, the Finnmaster offers a lot of flexibility.

Regal 28 Express

Best warm weather cabin cruiser

Better suited to warmer climes, the Regal is more of a mini-Med style cabin cruiser than its all-weather rivals. When it comes to outdoor lounging and sun worshipping, the Regal does things better than most.

Accommodation is far more open below – the air-conditioned cabin includes a double berth situated aft under the cockpit and a forward double berth created by dropping the forward table and adding an infill cushion, while the enclosed head boasts 6ft of standing headroom and a pull-out shower.

The lower galley comes equipped with an electric hob, microwave, refrigerator and sink that can easily cater for simple meals and breakfast on board.

Where the Regal offers a different approach is in its open cockpit design with multiple sunbathing spaces, seating that converts into a sun pad and an outdoor wet bar. With power up to a 380hp Volvo petrol sterndrive, the 28 Express is capable of just under 32 knots flat out.

The Regal can cope with fair weather coastal navigation between marinas, and it is ideal for lounging at a sandbar or anchored off a beach. With the optional 32in TV in the saloon and a large wraparound sofa, family weekends away are easily accommodated. And as a handy bonus, the radar arch can be lowered electrically to reduce bridge clearance when towing.

beneteau-antares-8-MBY278.newboat_3.Ben1

The Beneteau Antares 8 comes in Cruising and Fishing variants

Beneteau Antares 8

Best value cabin cruiser

Starting at an exceptionally low $88,000 the Antares 8 should definitely be in the mix if you’re searching for the best cabin cruiser on a budget. Although cost savings are evident compared to some of the boats mentioned above, the Antares is an excellent small weekender.

Power starts with a super quiet 200hp Mercury V6 outboard, or you can upgrade to the 250hp V8 single outboard. Options include an electric head, 12in Garmin MFD and Fusion sound system and, for fishing lovers, roof mounted rocket launcher style rod holders.

This two-cabin boat accommodates four using the convertible upper saloon as a double berth as well as the forward twin cabin, with the midships area reserved for storage.

A side door allows safe boarding for children off the dock, and at a compact 26ft 5in, this small cabin cruiser is well equipped for short family cruises.

A small but usable galley with a choice of gas or electric cooking, refrigeration, and plenty of seating for four people can be found in the convertible saloon.

The well-equipped helm with power steering, digital controls and optional bow thruster make the Antares an excellent starter boat, and with the optional lithium-ion air conditioning unit and large aft cockpit the Antares would work just as well in warmer climates as well as cooler ones.

Remember, your comfort and confidence on the water are crucial, so it's essential to choose a boat that feels right for you.

Research on various sailboat models

Invest some time in thorough research on various sailboat models within your budget. This will help you understand their features, strengths, and weaknesses. You can do this by consulting online resources, speaking with experienced sailors, and visiting boat shows.

Reviews from fellow sailors

Don't underestimate the power of reviews from fellow sailors. Reading the real-life experiences of others who have sailed on different boat models can provide valuable insights into their performance, maintenance, and overall satisfaction. Check out online forums, sailing magazines, and customer testimonials to gather a variety of opinions on the sailboats you're considering.

There are numerous online forums and communities dedicated to sailing enthusiasts and beginners where you can ask questions, share experiences, and learn from others who share your passion. Consider the following factors to help you make the best decision that caters to your preferences and budget:

Sailing experience

As a beginner, it's crucial to choose a sailboat that matches your current skill level . Smaller boats with simple rigging and easy handling, like the Sunfish or Hobie Cats, are great for those who are just starting. As you gain experience, you may transition to larger vessels with more advanced features.

Preferred types of sailing activities

Always think about what type of sailing activities you prefer. Some people enjoy leisurely weekend trips , while others are more interested in racing. For example, the West Wight Potter is an excellent choice for weekend cruising, while the Challenger Trimaran is more performance-oriented for racers. Identifying how you plan to use your sailboat will greatly help you make the best choice for your needs.

Your budget for a sailboat with a cabin

Finding a sailboat within your budget range is essential, but also keep in mind the ongoing costs such as maintenance, mooring fees, insurance, and fuel. With realistic financial planning, you can make a wise investment in a sailboat that suits your needs and avoids future financial issues.

In this section, we will discuss the following important aspects when choosing the best beginner sailboat with a cabin: size and layout, ease of handling, and maintenance and upkeep.

small yacht with cabin

Size and layout of the sailboat

The size of the sailboat is an important consideration, especially if you plan to spend nights on board or have guests join you. Choose a boat that not only fits your budget but also ensures enough space and comfort for your activities. A good starting point might be boats between 22 and 30 feet in length, offering a combination of living space, stability, and sailing capabilities.

Think about the layout of the cabin and the overall interior design. Make sure there are enough berths for everyone staying on board, and consider the placement of the galley, head, and storage areas. Keep in mind that a well-designed layout can make a small space feel larger and more comfortable.

Ease of handling the sailboat

As a beginner, it's crucial to select a sailboat that is easy to handle and maneuver. Tiller steering is a great choice for beginners, as it helps you gain a better understanding of the boat's direction and the wind's force. Look for boats with simple rigging, easy-to-reach controls, and a responsive helm. This will ensure a smoother and more enjoyable learning experience as you build your confidence in sailing.

Maintenance and upkeep of the sailboat

Owning a sailboat comes with the responsibility of regular maintenance to keep it in top shape. Familiarize yourself with the costs and tasks associated with upkeep, such as cleaning, painting, and inspecting critical components. Choose a boat with a proven history of durability and low-cost maintenance, so you don't end up dedicating all your time and money to its upkeep. Fiberglass hulls, for example, tend to be easier to maintain than wooden ones.

14 Great Pocket Cruisers in 2023

  • By Victor Tan
  • Updated: July 20, 2023

Pocket cruisers and mini yachts are generally vessels under 50 feet in length overall, and can include express cruiser designs, flybridge yachts as well as either monohull or catamaran hull forms. They are cruising boats easily handled by a small, or even shorthanded, crew. Pocket cruisers generally have wave-taming hull designs and have the ability to take on sporty seas, offer comfortable accommodations belowdecks with one or two staterooms for extended voyages, “homelike amenities,” and the ability to cruise as slowly or as quickly as an owner desires with inboard- and outboard-power options. These pocket-cruising boats have the range for longer voyages , can pull up in skinny water at the sandbar thanks to shallow drafts, and head over the horizon where cruising adventure awaits. Pocket cruisers are true multitasking yachts. When it comes to family and couples cruising, it’s hard to beat a well-built and well-equipped and pocket cruiser.

Best Cruising Boats Under 50-Feet

The following 14 pocket cruisers and mini yachts are all vessels we’ve seen, been aboard, and tested. They are listed in no particular order.

  • Beneteau Gran Turismo 45: sleek cruising yacht with all the amenities
  • Solaris Power 48 Open: eye-catching power yacht with 360-degree views

This yacht looks like a traditional, cold-molded Down East dayboat, but actually, it has everything, from Hamilton HJX Series water-jet drives to a planned Sea Machines autonomous command-and-control system . Top speed: 40-plus knots.

Hinckley Yachts 35

The Hinckley Yachts 35 takes everything that yachtsmen like about this pedigreed-brand’s classic profile and infuses today’s modern outboard power to create 40 knots of sheer fun wrapped in sheer luxury.

This 35-foot Hinckley is built on a Michael-Peters-penned hull form with a fine entry, wider-than-average chines and a moderate deadrise. While the boat is built to sprint when desired, it’s also a relatively economical cruiser. For instance, a comfortable 24-knot cruise the Hinckley Yachts 35 has a 276-nautical-mile range.

It also has a tech-build thanks to vacuum-infused carbon-fiber composites and epoxy resin. An integrated interior structure is infused with the hull adding rigidity. The hull is then post-cured in an 80-foot oven, further strengthening the structure.

There is an L-shaped settee with a table and a wet bar on the main deck to port. The helm station is forward and to starboard with a benchseat for two. Greenline Yachts ‘ vessels are aptly named for their environmentally friendly means of moving about; the Greenline 39 is no different. The Slovenian yacht manufacturer produces two types of this model: hybrid and solar.

If owners opt for the latter, the 39’s four solar panels atop the salon power all of the vessel’s systems for three hours. With the power of the sun, the 39 can achieve a max speed of 6.5 knots and a cruising speed of 4 knots. The hybrid type uses those same panels to help power a 220 hp Volvo Penta D3 with a Mahle electric-drive system. 20 Best Small Sailboats for the Weekender

  • By Mark Pillsbury
  • Updated: May 24, 2024

In order to go cruising, most of us require a sailboat with a head, a galley, and bunks. The boat, likely a 30-footer and more often a 40-footer, will have electronics for navigation and entertainment, refrigeration if the trip is longer than a coastal hop, an engine for light wind, and, depending on our appetites for food and fun, perhaps a genset to power our toys and appliances.

To go sailing , however, all we really need is a hull, mast, rudder, and sail. To experience the pure joy of sheeting in and scooting off across a lake, bay, or even the open ocean, there’s nothing better than a small sailboat – we’re talking sailboats under 25 feet. You can literally reach out and touch the water as it flows past. You instantly feel every puff of breeze and sense every change in trim.

Some of the boats in this list are new designs, others are time-tested models from small sailboat manufacturers, but every one is easy to rig, simple to sail, and looks like a whole lot of fun either for a solo outing on a breezy afternoon or to keep family and friends entertained throughout your entire sailing season. This list is made up of all types of sailboats , and if you’re looking for a list of some of the best small sailboats for beginners, you’ll find exactly that here.

Any one of these popular boats could be labeled as a trailerable sailboat, daysailer, or even a weekender sailboat. And while most would be labeled as a one or two person sailboat, some could comfortably fit three or even four people.

– CHECK THE WEATHER – The weather changes all the time. Always check the forecast and prepare for the worst case. Safety Tip Provided by the U.S. Coast Guard

Marblehead 22 Daysailer

Marblehead 22 Daysailer

If you have an eye for elegant lines and your heart goes pitter-patter over just the right amount of overhang beneath a counter transom, the Marblehead 22 daysailer, designed by Doug Zurn and built by Samoset Boatworks in Boothbay, Maine, will definitely raise your pulse. Traditional-looking above the waterline and modern beneath, the cold-molded hull sports a deep bulb keel and a Hall Spars carbon-fiber mast with a wishbone rig and square-top main. The 11-foot-9-inch cockpit can seat a crowd, and a small cuddy forward will let you stow your friends’ gear for the day. samosetboatworks.com

Catalina 22 Sport

Catalina 22 Sport

Many a harbor plays host to an active fleet of Catalina 22s, one of the most popular small sailboats over the years, given its basic amenities and retractable keel, which allows it to be easily trailered. Recently, the company introduced the Catalina 22 Sport, an updated design that can compete with the older 22s. The boat features a retractable lead keel; a cabin that can sleep four, with a forward hatch for ventilation; and a fractional rig with a mainsail and a roller-furling jib. Lifelines, a swim ladder, and an engine are options, as are cloth cushions; vinyl cushions are standard. The large cockpit will seat a crowd or let a mom-and-pop crew stretch out and enjoy their sail. It’s clear why the Catalina 22 is one of the best sailboats under 25 feet. catalinayachts.com

Hunter 22

With its large, open-transom cockpit and sloop rig, the Hunter 22 makes a comfortable daysailer for family and friends. But with its cuddy cabin, twin bunks, optional electrical system, opening screened ports, and portable toilet, a parent and child or a couple could comfortably slip away for an overnight or weekend. Add in the optional performance package, which includes an asymmetric spinnaker, a pole, and a mainsheet traveler, and you could be off to the races. The boat features a laminated fiberglass hull and deck, molded-in nonskid, and a hydraulic lifting centerboard. Mount a small outboard on the stern bracket, and you’re set to go. marlow-hunter.com

the Daysailer

Not sure whether you want to race, cruise or just go out for an afternoon sail? Since 1958, sailors have been having a ball aboard the Uffa Fox/George O’Day-designed Daysailer. Fox, who in the 1950s was on the cutting edge of planning-dinghy design, collaborated with Fall River, Massachusetts boatbuilder O’Day Corp. to build the 16-foot Daysailer, a boat that features a slippery hull and a small cuddy cabin that covers the boat roughly from the mast forward. Thousands of Daysailers were built by various builders, and they can be found used for quite affordable prices. There are active racing fleets around the US, and new Daysailers are still in production today, built by Cape Cod Ship Building. capecodshipbuilding.com

Easy to rig and trailer, the BayRaider from England’s Swallow Yachts is a relative newcomer to the small-boat market in the United States. Nearly all of its 19 feet 9 inches is open cockpit, though a spray hood can be added to keep the forward sections dry. The BayRaider is ketch-rigged with a gunter-style mainmast. The topmast and mizzen are both carbon-fiber, which is an option for the mainmast as well. The BayRaider can be sailed with a dry hull in lighter conditions or with 300 pounds of water ballast to increase its stability. With the centerboard and hinged rudder raised, the boat can maneuver in even the thinnest water.

12 1/2 foot Beetle Cat

Big fun can come in small packages, especially if your vessel of choice happens to be the 12 ½-foot Beetle Cat. Designed by John Beetle and first built in 1921, the wooden shallow draft sailboat is still in production today in Wareham, Massachusetts at the Beetle Boat Shop. With a draft of just 2 feet, the boat is well-suited for shallow bays, but equally at home in open coastal waters. The single gaff-rigged sail provides plenty of power in light air and can be quickly reefed down to handle a blow. In a word, sailing a Beetle Cat is fun. beetlecat.com

West Wight Potter P 19

West Wight Potter P 19

With berths for four and a workable galley featuring a cooler, a sink, and a stove, West Wight Potter has packed a lot into its 19-foot-long P 19. First launched in 1971, this is a line of boats that’s attracted a true following among trailer-sailors. The P 19′s fully retractable keel means that you can pull up just about anywhere and go exploring. Closed-cell foam fore and aft makes the boat unsinkable, and thanks to its hard chine, the boat is reportedly quite stable under way. westwightpotter.com

NorseBoat 17.5

NorseBoat 17.5

Designed for rowing and sailing (a motor mount is optional), the Canadian-built NorseBoat 17.5—one of which was spotted by a CW editor making its way through the Northwest Passage with a two-man crew—features an open cockpit, a carbon-fiber mast, and a curved-gaff rig, with an optional furling headsail set on a sprit. The lapstrake hull is fiberglass; the interior is ply and epoxy. The boat comes standard with two rowing stations and one set of 9-foot oars. The boat is designed with positive flotation and offers good load-carrying capacity, which you could put to use if you added the available canvas work and camping tent. NorseBoats offers a smaller sibling, the 12.5, as well; both are available in kit form.

Montgomery 17

Montgomery 17

Billed as a trailerable pocket cruiser, the Montgomery 17 is a stout-looking sloop designed by Lyle Hess and built out of fiberglass in Ontario, California, by Montgomery Boats. With a keel and centerboard, the boat draws just under 2 feet with the board up and can be easily beached when you’re gunkholing. In the cuddy cabin you’ll find sitting headroom, a pair of bunks, a portable toilet, optional shore and DC power, and an impressive amount of storage space. The deck-stepped mast can be easily raised using a four-part tackle. The builder reports taking his own boat on trips across the Golfo de California and on visits to California’s coastal islands. Montgomery makes 15-foot and 23-foot models, as well. If you’re in search of a small sailboat with a cabin, the Montgomery 17 has to be on your wish list.

CW Hood 32 Daysailer small sailboat

With long overhangs and shiny brightwork, the CW Hood 32 is on the larger end of the daysailer spectrum. Designers Chris Hood and Ben Stoddard made a conscious decision to forego a cabin and head in favor of an open cockpit big enough to bring 4 or 5 friends or family out for an afternoon on the water. The CW Hood 32 is sleek and graceful through the water and quick enough to do some racing, but keeps things simple with a self-tacking jib and controls that can be lead back to a single-handed skipper. A top-furling asymmetrical, electric sail drive and Torqeedo outboard are all optional. The CW Hood 32 makes for a great small family sailboat.  cwhoodyachts.com

Sun Cat from Com-Pac

Sun Cat from Com-Pac

Shallow U.S. East Coast bays and rock-strewn coasts have long been graced by cat boats, whose large, gaff-rigged mainsails proved simple and powerful both on the wind and, better yet, when reaching and running. The 17-foot-4-inch Sun Cat, built by Com-Pac Yachts, updates the classic wooden cat with its fiberglass hull and deck and the easy-to-step Mastender Rigging System, which incorporates a hinged tabernacle to make stepping the mast a one-person job. If you want a personal sailboat ideal for solo sailing, the Sun Can is a great choice. Belowdecks, the twin 6-foot-5-inch berths and many other features and amenities make this cat a willing weekender.

Catalina 16.5

Catalina 16.5

The Catalina 16.5 sits right in the middle of Catalina Yachts’ line of small sailboats, which range from the 12.5 to the 22 Capri and Sport, and it comes in both an easy-to-trailer centerboard model and a shoal-draft fixed-keel configuration. With the fiberglass board up, the 17-foot-2-inch boat draws just 5 inches of water; with the board down, the 4-foot-5-inch draft suggests good windward performance. Hull and deck are hand-laminated fiberglass. The roomy cockpit is self-bailing, and the bow harbors a good-sized storage area with a waterproof hatch. catalinayachts.com

Hobie 16

No roundup of best small sailboats (trailerable and fun too) would be complete without a mention of the venerable Hobie 16, which made its debut in Southern California way back in 1969. The company has introduced many other multihulls since, but more than 100,000 of the 16s have been launched, a remarkable figure. The Hobie’s asymmetric fiberglass-and-foam hulls eliminate the need for daggerboards, and with its kick-up rudders, the 16 can be sailed right up to the beach. Its large trampoline offers lots of space to move about or a good place to plant one’s feet when hanging off the double trapezes with a hull flying. The boat comes with a main and a jib; a spinnaker, douse kit, trailer, and beach dolly are optional features. hobiecat.com

Hunter 15

Novice sailors or old salts looking for simplicity could both enjoy sailing the Hunter 15. With a fiberglass hull and deck and foam flotation, the boat is sturdily built. The ample freeboard and wide beam provide stability under way, and the heavy-duty rubrail and kick-up rudder mean that you won’t have to worry when the dock looms or the going grows shallow. Both the 15 and its slightly larger 18-foot sibling come standard with roller-furling jibs.

Super Snark

Super Snark

Under various owners, the Snark brand of sailboats, now built by Meyers Boat Co., has been around since the early 1970s. The Super Snark, at 11 feet, is a simple, easily car-topped daysailer that’s fit out with a lateen rig and sail. Billed as unsinkable, the five boats in the company’s line are built with E.P.S. foam, with the external hull and deck vacuum-formed to the core using an A.B.S. polymer. The Super Snark weighs in at 50 pounds, and with a payload capacity of 310 pounds, the boat can carry two.

Norseboat 21.5

Norseboat 21.5

Built in Canada, the NorseBoat 21.5 is a rugged looking craft that comes in a couple of configurations: one with an open cockpit and small doghouse, and another with a smaller cockpit and cabin that houses a double berth for two adults and optional quarter berths for the kids. Both carry NorseBoat’s distinctive looking carbon fiber gaff-rigged mast with main and jib (a sprit-set drifter is optional), and come with a ballasted stub keel and centerboard. Because of its lightweight design, the boat can be rowed and is easily trailered.

Flying Scot

Flying Scot

Talk about time-tested, the 19-foot Flying Scot has been in production since 1957 and remains a popular design today. Sloop rigged, with a conventional spinnaker for downwind work, the boat is an easily sailed family boat as well as a competitive racer, with over 130 racing fleets across the U.S. Its roomy cockpit can seat six to eight, though the boat is often sailed by a pair or solo. Hull and deck are a fiberglass and balsa core sandwich. With the centerboard up, the boat draws only eight inches. Though intended to be a daysailer, owners have rigged boom tents and berths for overnight trips, and one adventurous Scot sailor cruised his along inland waterways from Philadelphia to New Orleans.

RS Venture

Known primarily for its line of racing dinghys, RS Sailing also builds the 16-foot, 4-inch Venture, which it describes as a cruising and training dinghy. The Venture features a large, self-draining cockpit that will accommodate a family or pack of kids. A furling jib and mainsail with slab reefing come standard with the boat; a gennaker and trapeze kit are options, as is an outboard motor mount and transom swim ladder. The deck and hull are laid up in a fiberglass and Coremat sandwich. The Venture’s designed to be both a good performer under sail, but also stable, making it a good boat for those learning the sport.

Topaz Taz

Topper makes a range of mono- and multihull rotomolded boats, but the model that caught one editor’s eye at Strictly Sail Chicago was the Topaz Taz. At 9 feet, 8 inches LOA and weighing in at 88 pounds, the Taz is not going to take the whole crowd out for the day. But, with the optional mainsail and jib package (main alone is for a single child), the Taz can carry two or three kids or an adult and one child, and would make a fun escape pod when tied behind the big boat and towed to some scenic harbor. The hull features Topper’s Trilam construction, a plastic and foam sandwich that creates a boat that’s stiff, light, and durable, and shouldn’t mind being dragged up on the beach when it’s time for a break.

WindRider WRTango

WindRider WRTango

WRTango, a fast, sturdy, 10-foot trimaran that’s easy to sail, is the newest portable craft from WindRider International. It joins a line that includes the WR16 and WR17 trimarans. The Tango features forward-facing seating, foot-pedal steering, and a low center of gravity that mimics the sensation of sitting in a kayak. It weighs 125 pounds (including the outriggers and carbon-fiber mast), is extremely stable, and has single-sheet sail control. The six-inch draft and kick-up rudder make it great for beaching, while the hull and outriggers are made of rotomolded polyethylene, so it can withstand running into docks and being dragged over rocks.

9 Affordable Boats With Enclosed Cabins (with pictures)

' src=

Boats with enclosed cabins are great for boaters who want to spend a little more time out on the water.  Unfortunately, they are often out of the price ranges of most people.

However, just because most boats with enclosed cabins tend to be expensive, it doesn’t mean that they all are.

In this post, we’ll talk about nine affordable boats with enclosed cabins that you can buy today!

Table of Contents

Cuddy Cabins

Cuddy cabins are great boats for people on a budget who are looking for a boat that offers an enclosed sleeping space.  These little boats provide their owners with an interior cabin at the front of the boat that can be set up to sit in or to sleep in.

However, they typically do not offer any other amenities such as galleys or heads.

This makes them great for day trips, weekend adventures, and boat camping excursions, but not very good for full-time living.

The Bayliner VR5 Cuddy

small yacht with cabin

The Bayliner VR5 Cuddy is a 20’4” boat with a hull length of 18’4” a beam of 8’, and a draft of 2’10”.  A 150HP or 250HP engine can be attached to it, and a 33-gallon fuel tank is built to fuel these engines.

While this boat isn’t very large, it can still hold up to 8 people.

Of course, these eight people would not be able to move around freely in a boat of this size, but they would have plenty of seating options as this boat offers them in abundance.

One of the best features of this boat is its weight.  With the 150HP engine, the boat only weighs 3,131 pounds , and even with the 250HP engine, it only weighs 3,351 pounds.  This means the boat is easily towable for people with small trucks, SUVs, and even some minivans with towing packages.

The main area of this boat has comfortable wrap-around seating, and the captain’s chair swivels around to lineup with an optional teak dining table.  This makes this little cuddy cabin perfect for cruising around on lakes, rivers, the bay, and even through small channels.

2020 models of this boat sell for around $71,000.00. However, this model isn’t completely new to Bayliner, so if you want to reduce your expenses, you could get an older used VR5 for a bit cheaper.

Stingray 208CR Cuddy Cabin

small yacht with cabin

The Stingray 208CR is another 20’ long boat with an 8’ beam.  This boat is a fiberglass boat, and it sports a V6 4.3-C 200 SX engine.  A 34-gallon fuel tank is used to fuel this boat.

Nine people can ride on the 208CR, and two people can sleep inside it.  It even has a freshwater tank of 6 gallons and a 25qt icebox.  With the 200HP engine, the dry weight of the boat is only 3,078 pounds, so it is definitely able to go on a trailer.

Up on deck, you’ll find two captain’s chairs and a bench that could realistically seat three adults.  This area is covered by a small bimini top and a front windshield.

At the stern of the boat, there is a nice little area for launching tubers, water boarders, water skiers, and even swimmers.  To get back onto the boat, one just needs to climb up the extendable ladder.

Move to the front of the boat, and you’ll find a small cabin that offers seating and a little place to sleep.  This area can also house a small portable toilet, but personally, I wouldn’t want to use a toilet in the same area that I intend to sit in and sleep in, so it’s best left for emergencies.

I couldn’t imagine being on this boat with eight other people, but it is perfect for a group of four or five people who want to have a nice day out on the water.  Passengers can rotate between doing water sports and resting in the cabin, and a couple could even spend the night out on the water from time-to-time.

This boat is very reasonably priced at $39,180.00 for a brand new 2020 model.

This cabin cannot be closed so you might want some special boat lights to keep mosquitos away .

Atlas Boat Works Pompano 23

small yacht with cabin

The Pompano 23 is 23’ long and has a 7’ beam.  The dry weight on it is only 2,100 pounds, so it is easy to tow.  It has a small fuel capacity of only 30 gallons, but this should be plenty considering how light the boat is.  Also, the engine capacity is only 115HP max, so the engine won’t be eating up a lot of full either.

One of the nice features of this boat is that the cockpit can be enclosed with a canvas enclosure.  This gives the boat an additional indoor area on top of the small cuddy cabin.  You could use this to get changed in or simply to get out of the wind and sun.  Also, the stern of the boat is completely covered with a bimini top, so you never actually have to expose yourself to the hot midday sun.

Inside the cabin, you’ll find a small vee berth and a portable toilet .  The berth can be converted to a small sitting area, but most people probably won’t use it as it is quite small.

Campion Allante 635

small yacht with cabin

The 2019 Campion Allante 635 is a 22’ long fiberglass boat with a 200hp outboard gas engine.  This engine is fueled by a 60-gallon fuel tank, which is massive for a boat this size.  The larger fuel tank would be perfect for owners who want to spend a few nights out on the water in their little cuddy cabin.

Up on deck, there are two captain’s chairs and a small sitting area for four to five people behind them.  This sitting area has a round table attached to it with two built-in cup holders.  Move through this area, and there is a nice opening that can be used to access the rear of the boat.

Head inside the cabin, and once again, you’ll find a small sitting area that can be converted into a two-person sleeping area.  There is also a portable toilet that fits in between the sitting area.

The only dry weight listing I could find for the boat was 2,800 pounds , but it doesn’t list whether or not this weight includes the weight of the motor.

However, even if you add a couple of hundred pounds for the engine, you’ll still have a boat that is light enough and small enough to be towed easily.

Pricing for this boat is in the neighborhood of $50,000.00.

Cabin Cruisers

Cabin cruisers provide a lot more usable interior space.  They make wonderful weekend getaway boats and can even be used for extended vacations.  Some people even use these boats as full-time homes , but they are a bit limited in space for this purpose.

A cabin cruiser will feature at least one berth and will usually offer a head and a galley.  It may even offer multiple berths and even a lounge area.  You can often find these with air conditioners and heaters, and a generator can even be added to power these amenities when the boat isn’t running.

People who want a yacht but can’t quite afford one just yet often turn to cabin cruisers as they offer many of the benefits of a yacht but in a smaller package.

Boston Whaler Conquest 285

small yacht with cabin

The Boston Whaler Conquest 285 is a smaller cabin cruiser.

Its length is 27’10,” and its beam is 9’6”  The dry weight without the engine is 7,300 pounds.  This is light enough that the boat could be trailered with a larger truck, but the width would make it difficult to tow around realistically.

With the high weight of the boat comes a large engine.  The engine on this is a 500HP engine.  This engine is fueled with a 200-gallon fuel tank.

The outside features a few captain’s chairs and a nice standing area that could be used for fishing.  This area also features a fridge and a small sink as well. At the bow, there is a small door so that the rear can be accessed for water sports.

The cockpit is completely enclosed, and there is seating for three.  Head through the cockpit, and you can enter the main salon, which features a berth that converts to a dining table, a small head, and a small kitchen.  There is also a cabin inside as well, which has a berth that can convert to a small seating area.

A thirty-gallon freshwater tank supplies the bathroom and kitchen with clean water, and a 6.5-gallon wastewater tank provides black water storage.  There is also a 26 gallon live well as well.

This boat sells new for several hundred thousand dollars, but you can buy them used for less than $50,000.00.

Grady White Express 330

small yacht with cabin

The Grady White Express 330 is a 33’6” boat with an 11’7” beam.  It weighs 10,840 pounds without the engines.  The engine capacity is 850 HP, which comes in the form of two rear outboard motors.  To fuel these motors, there is a 331-gallon fuel tank.

The exterior of the boat is set up for cruising and for fishing, and the deck can be converted to be used for either purpose as there are foldaway benches built into it.  There is also a side door with a boarding ladder that could be used for swimmers and divers.

Inside the cabin, you’ll find a forward vee berth, a double aft berth, a seating area with a 28” television, a port side galley, and a head with a 10-gallon holding tank.  With all of these items inside the cabin, there really isn’t a lot of room to move around.  This being said, you do have everything you could need for a long weekend or even a minimalistic full-time life out on the water.

A new Grady White Express 330 is going to cost over a quarter of a million dollars.

However, you can buy used models for less than six figures.  Also, remember that a fiberglass boat can easily last a lifetime, so an investment in a 20-year-old Express 330 could be a great alternative to buying a summer vacation home.

Rinker 270 Express Cruiser

small yacht with cabin

The Rinker 270 Express Cruiser is a 28’10” boat with an 8’6” beam.  It has a dry weight of 7,095 pounds and can sleep up to four people.

One of the best features of this boat is that it is small enough to be put on a trailer and large enough to live in.  This makes it very desirable for weekend adventurers and for people who wish to travel around the country with their boat in tow.

On top of this, the boat’s cabin offers 6’5” of headroom, which is more than many campers have to offer these days.

Inside the cabin, you’ll find a vee berth as well as a double berth on either side of a galley kitchen and a small head.   This kitchen contains a one burner electric stove, a microwave, and a 2.3 cubic foot fridge.  For entertainment, there is a built-in Bluetooth stereo system.

On the outside, the cockpit features seating for three, and it is all covered with a bimini top.  Behind this, there is a section that contains dual benches that face each other.  Just past this is a back deck that would be easy to jump on and off of.  It also houses an extendable ladder that can be used by swimmers.

What I love about this boat is that you can find used models for as little as $20,000.00 and even brand new, you won’t have to sell your house to buy one.

Center Console Fishing Boats

Many boat manufacturers have caught onto the fact that it’s easier for anglers to sell their families on the idea of buying a fishing boat that’s also comfortable for passengers.  For this reason, they’re now building center console fishing boats with cabins and seating areas that rival cruising boats.

These boats are great for anglers because they have a full 360-degree area that they can fish from.  On top of this, they can bring their non-fishing family members with them, and they can hang out in the lounge areas or get some rest inside the cabin.

Here are a few examples of center console fishing boats with cabins.

Scout 350 LXF

small yacht with cabin

The Scout 350 LXF features a large open bow with bench seating and a tanning deck.  The benches and the deck are both padded for additional comfort.

At the rear, there is rearward facing bench seating and plenty of open space for fishing.  This is partially shaded by the center console’s overhead cover.

The center of the boat features a cockpit with a roof and comfortable seating .  It also houses the door leading into the main cabin and adds some additional interior headroom for the shower and galley areas.

There isn’t a lot of room inside the cabin, but you will find a vee berth that converts to a dinette, a small galley kitchen with a sink and a microwave, and a head that houses a toilet and a shower.  These amenities are filled with a 30-gallon freshwater tank.

You could spend a day or even a weekend inside this cabin, but most would probably be reluctant to live inside of it full-time.  This being said, the outside decks are nice enough that you could stay out there in nice weather and never feel like you’re depriving yourself.

The boat comes in at 34’11” with a beam of 10’9”.  It has a deep draft of 23,” and a weight of 10,800 pounds with two twin Yamaha 350 engines included.  Powering the twin engines is a 334-gallon fuel tank.

This boat comes in at over $300,000.00 and might seem unaffordable at first.  However, you have to realize that both fishing boats and cabin cruisers often cost this much, and this boat actually combines both of them into one.

Dusky 227 Fish Around Cruiser

small yacht with cabin

The Dusky 227 is a 22’7” longboat with an 8’2” beam.  This makes it a trailer-safe boat that can be used for fishing, cruising, and even sleeping in.  The engine on the boat is a 230HP engine with a 60-gallon fuel tank.  This fuel capacity is much lower than some of the cabin cruisers we discussed, but it is on-par with the cuddy cabins.

This boat is a lot less plush than some of the other boats we’ve looked at, but it appears to be a lot more functional in terms of fishing capabilities.  The bow features a small bench and an area that could be used for sitting against the rails.  These areas do not have any padding and are molded into the boat, so they should be ridiculously easy to clean, even after a full day of fishing.

There isn’t any seating at the stern or in front of the center console, which would make running around the boat to get to fishing poles a lot easier.  Move into this center console, and you’ll find a small bench that can be converted into a small vee berth.  Inside the bench is a storage compartment.

For people who want a little more luxury, a bench seat can be added behind the center console, and overhead cover can be added as well.  Additional padding can also be purchased to add over the built-in bench upfront.

A brand new Dusky 227 is very reasonable and can be had for as little as $55,000.00.

Final Thoughts

There are affordable boats with enclosed cabins at all levels.

The key is to decide how much you want to spend and choose a boat that meets both your needs and your budget!

Types of Boats With Cabins: Your Guidebook

17th jul 2023 by toi williams.

Rightboat logo

Boaters who enjoy comfort often choose boats with cabins. Having a cabin on the boat provides protection from the sun, wind, and rain while on the water and gives the boaters, or their guests, a place to rest when they want to relax. Boats with cabins come in many different varieties from large cabin cruisers to smaller boats with pilothouse-type cabins. Finding the right types of boats with cabins for you and your family or friends requires knowing the differences between the various boat styles.

cabin cruiser

Types of Cabin Cruiser Boats

Cabin cruiser boats are some of the most well-appointed types of cabin boats . They are designed for spending extended periods on the water and generally come with a sleeping area, a galley, and a small bathroom. These types of boats come in lengths ranging from 25 feet to 100 feet. Boaters tend to like them because they have plenty of room, can be used in both freshwater and saltwater, and they often have large swim platforms and sun pads for relaxing.

Cabin cruiser boats for sale

The most common types of cabin cruiser boats are express cruisers and pocket cruisers.

Express cruisers

Express cruisers, also called expresses, coupes, and sport cruisers, are designed for high performance with a low-slung hardtop and a V-shaped hull. They often have top speeds of more than 30 knots and cruise efficiently at speeds from 22 to 25 knots. The top makers of express cruiser boats include Boston Whaler , Formula , Monterey Boats , Princess , Pursuit  ans  Regal .

Express cruiser boats for sale

Pocket cruisers

Pocket cruisers are smaller than express cruisers and try to fit a lot of boat into a small package with creative engineering and a smart use of available space, making them ideal for couples and smaller families. These cabin cruisers generally have a living area situated above deck with a cabin below deck to maximize space and comfort. They are generally chosen as recreational boats for weekend leisure trips. The top makers of pocket cruiser boats include Cutwater , Jeanneau  and  Ranger Tugs . Some unusual new designs, including those from  Sea Ray  and Solara , have a cabin in the middle and a bow cockpit forward.

Types of Cuddy Cabin Boats

Cuddy cabin boats are boats with a small, enclosed cabin space that may or may not be large enough to stand up in. Depending on the model, they may also have a head and possibly even a small galley. These boats with cabins tend to range in length from 20 feet to 26 feet, and place more emphasis on open cockpit space but still have the cuddy cabin for overnight trips or breaks from the weather. Boaters can enjoy just about any activity that they would undertake with a larger boat, including fishing, cruising, and towing skiers, boarders, and tubers. However, they have limited sleeping and storage space as they are not intended for long voyages. Some makers of various types of cuddy cabin boats include  Boston Whaler , Grady-White , Jeanneau , and Sea Ray .

Types of Offshore Cabin Boats

There are many types of offshore cabin boats in a wide range of styles and sizes. Some, which would usually be categorized as trawlers, have larger displacement hulls offering the maximum amount of tankage and onboard storage space. A handful of offshore cabin boats also offer electric or hybrid motors to maximize fuel efficiency.

Trawlers are designed for extended stays during long voyages. They tend to have relatively large cabins, can have displacement or semi-displacement hulls, and come with either one or two engines. Most will have at least one private stateroom, a full galley, and an enclosed head. Most trawlers range from 30 feet to 80 feet in length, although there are a few that fall outside this range. Top trawler brands today include Beneteau , Grand Banks , Nordhavn , Nordic Tugs , and Ranger Tugs .

Flybridge cabin cruisers

These boats are cruisers that have a steering station on top of the hard top, and in some cases on very large models, an upper cabin as well. They are a popular choice among boaters for their elevated perspective during cruising, along with their versatility and spaciousness. Flybridge cabin cruisers come in a number of shapes and sizes, starting at around 35 feet and going up from there. Top manufacturers of flybridge cabin cruisers include Beneteau , Cranchi , Fairline , Galeon , Lagoon , Prestige , and (on the used boat market) Sealine .

Downeast cabin cruisers

Downeast cabin cruisers are exceptionally well-suited for overnight trips and day cruising. They tend to have a helm station in the main cabin, with accommodations in a lower cabin positioned toward the forward part of the hull. These cabin boats can typically accommodate 10 or more passengers and range in size from about 20 feet to nearly 70 feet in length. Leading boat manufacturers specializing in downeast cabin cruisers include Back Cove , Ellis , Hinckley , and True North .

Catamarans are also offered as offshore cabin boats, especially in the sailing category. These are usually made of fiberglass or carbon fiber and have two reinforced hulls. Top builders include Fountaine-Pajot , Catana , Leopard , Nautitech , and Seawind . There are also some power catamaran cruising boats, which are generally appreciated for their high stability and spacious decks. Top builders include Aquila, Leopard, Nautitech, and Lagoon .

Trimarans , aalso known as double outriggers, are sailboats similar to catamarans except they have three hulls: a main hull and two smaller outrigger hulls connected to the main hull with lateral beams. Their design makes them exceptionally fast, so they are preferable for many recreational and racing purposes. They are often chosen for long trips with family and friends or for thrilling rides at high speeds. There are many manufacturers of trimarans, including Astus , Dragonfly , Farrier , Neel , and Radikal .

Types of Cabin Boats on Lakes

You can find just about any type of cabin boat on a lake, though most you’ll see are smaller and less powerful than the types of boats used offshore since they’re land-locked and are generally used for covering shorter distances. Lakes are also where you’ll find many houseboats, which certainly fall into the cabin boat category, and lots of people use them for vacationing or in lieu of a lakefront home. On some large lakes where fishing is popular, there may also be a contingent of fishing boats with cabins.

For more information see:  The Most Popular Types of Lake Boats

With the many different types of cabin boats available, it can be difficult to choose the best type of boat for your needs. At Rightboat, we have a wide range of models of boats with cabins on our platform to meet various budgets and tastes. While a yacht may be the first thing that pops to mind when you think of the ultra-wealthy, chartering one might not be as expensive as you think. When you're splitting the costs between several family members or friends you are paying for transportation and stay and it can make sense financially.

You can also  keep money in your wallet  by selecting an older vessel or taking charge of sailing yourself (hiring a crew always costs extra).

So let’s take a look at options that may be within reach for people who aren’t living paycheck to paycheck but aren’t brunching with the Kardashians either.

Editor's note: prices are subject to change and may vary depending on the time of the year.

The 64-foot boat is designed for fishing in shallower waters, perfect for you and five friends who will share three cabins. Two crew members can fit, too.

This yacht is cheaper than the Astrape at $17,500, so six folks will pay just under $3,000 a head per week.
