For most Ibiza yacht charters to be secured, you will usually need to provide a completed charter agreement and 50% of the charter fee as a deposit. This is payable once the contract has been signed.

You will have a greater variety of yachts to pick from if you decide to start your charter in Ibiza or Mallorca compared to mainland destinations. Whilst Barcelona certainly has a considerable array of yachts to choose from, it is not as extensive as the islands. 

We also strongly recommend that you book your yacht charter in Ibiza at least three months in advance to ensure you get the yacht you desire. The longer you leave it, you'll find you'll have less choice available.

There is a yacht to suit almost every budget in Ibiza so rest assured that you will find a vessel suitable to your requirements.

But when booking do keep in mind the costs that aren't included in the base rate, namely VAT and the APA (Advance Provisioning Allowance). The APA is usually paid in advance of the charter and is commonly set at 30% of the charter fee. This allowance covers expenses such as fuel, berthing, food and drinks, as well as any special requests. 

Please consult your yacht charter broker for any other costs you may need to factor in.

May through till October is the best time to visit the sun-drenched shores of Ibiza. Temperatures can rise to a heady 31 degrees in July and August, with its waters reaching 26 degrees respectively.

Yachts will need to obtain a Spanish charter licence in order to cruise Ibizan waters, this is applicable if you are beginning or ending your charter in Spain.

CHARTER FORMENTERA

A charter to Formentera is the stuff that dreams are made of. Just off the coast of Ibiza, Formentera is the smallest and most southerly of the Balearic Islands measuring around 20 km long and about 2 km wide. The beaches have some of the whitest sand that you can find in the Mediterranean and the sea is clear and a beautiful shade of turquoise. There’s a reason that it is often compared to islands in the Caribbean. There isn’t an airport, which helps to make the island even more exclusive, as you can only get there by boat. You can get to Formentera by boat in less than an hour from Ibiza Town and in only a few hours from San Antonio. Even before the beginning of Covid, Ibiza was on a sharp increase as the ultra-luxury yacht charter destination of the Mediterranean. As the South of France and Monaco become increasingly hostile towards luxury yacht charters (new Monaco government regulations starting in 2023 introduce strict KYC protocol, on top of above-standard VAT), Spain remains friendly and hungry for more high value clients.

The Balearic government is strongly pushing for high end, luxury tourism – at the expense of the huge all inclusive resorts introduced by Franco in the 60’s. Note that Balearic Islands are an autonomous area not on the same page with Madrid about where should the tourism taxes stay/leave. This issue is complicated by the fact that most marinas in Ibiza/Mallorca are owned by people with historical ties to the Spanish royal family, as Spain is still a kingdom.

Ibiza Charter – What You Need To Know Now

• don’t forget – the Ibiza clubs take turns on who’s hosting “THE” party, don’t plan without consulting someone on the ground. Going to Pacha or Amnesia on a wrong night can just kill your day.
• note that the Spanish prefer cooperation with local brokers, pick a broker in the Baleares, such as DMA Yachting .
• Beaches – Cala Salada, Cala Conta and Ses Salines are nice – what you really want is a private cove you can play music in the evening without other boats doing the same thing (after you turn it off). This is important, Spanish parties go until 9am, which is very well documented in this video by Sak Noel
• Scenery – while exploring hedonism to the fullest, take a moment to contemplate as well. Surprisingly, Ibiza IS a location where you can experience life changing sunsets. Please don’t be so lame to propose in Cafe del Mar, you’ll probably be brought a bottle of Dom Perignon 5 seconds after the table next to you did that, true story. Do so on a private yacht, with a private sunset.

New to charter?

The Advance Provisioning Allowance (APA) is due at the time of the final charter payment. Under MYBA terms, this sum is usually equivalent to 30 per cent of the total charter fee, but may be up to 40 per cent in some cases.

Intended to cover the operating expenses of a charter as explained under Charter Terms, such as fuel, food, drinks, port fees and ad hoc incidentals, the APA will be given to the captain before the start of your charter. The Captain will ensure that the yacht is fully fuelled and provisioned when you step on board. While an up-to-date summary of accounts can be requested at any time during your charter, a full set of accounts will normally be submitted by your captain at the end of the cruise. If, during the charter, the expenditure exceeds the sum already paid, additional cash funds will be required at once.

All outstanding bills from the yacht charter should be settled in cash or by bank transfer before your final disembarkation. Of course, any remaining credit at the end of your charter will be reimbursed to you in full. On request, transfer arrangements to and from the yacht can be made by Burgess or by the yacht’s captain, payment for which will be deducted from your APA.

WHAT TO EXPECT FROM YOUR

Ibiza yacht charter.

We are dedicated to working with our clients to create the best Ibiza yacht charter experience possible, letting the boat operator concentrate on what they do best, keeping the boat and crew ship-shape and ready to welcome you. If in the unlikely event that anything goes wrong on your charter, we are here to offer solutions and options that booking with an owner/operator directly or via an online website without an on-the-ground presence, does not offer. We also craft bespoke charter holidays, special and corporate events, restaurant reservations and organise watersports including flyboarding lessons, Seabobs and other water toys, so you can make the most of your yacht charter in Ibiza.

CHARTER DAY START TIMINGS

A normal crewed Ibiza yacht charter day starts at around 11am. Dependent on the operator is around 8 hours although some operators charge a supplement for additional hours, others suggest giving the crew an extra tip for staying out later than their usual working day. For day charter, the boats must be back in the port/marina by sunset. Overnight charters require departure from the boat on the last day at around 08:30.

HOW MANY GUESTS ON-BOARD?

Different boats have different licenses and this is what dictates the number of guests and crew. In Spain usually the maximum number for a charter is 12. If you are a party of more than 12, you may rent two boats, we call this tandem. When you stop, the boats can moor close to each other and you can go between boats. You can also opt for a support rib instead for the extra guests.

MUSIC ON-BOARD

Most boats have either a cable or bluetooth connection to the on-board music systems. Some boats have a club-like sound system, others strategically placed speakers, so you can hear your music from your iPhone or device.

PROVISIONING

Each operator is different but most provide soft drinks, water, ice, some also provide beers, a few bottles of wine and cava. Some include fruit and snacks such as olives, cheese etc. We will tell you what is included in your charter and arrange for any extras you might need, such as great wines from our wine partner or from the supermarket at cost. For sleep aboard charters, we’ll help organise a provisions list.

RESTAURANT RESERVATIONS

If you would like to go to a specific restaurant on a certain day, it is necessary to reserve a table. We can help reserve tables for you at most restaurants in Ibiza or Formentera including Moli de Sal, Juan y Andrea, Chezz Gerdi, Blue Marlin, Cotton Club, subject to availability at time of booking. Some including Beso Beach require online booking and a deposit per person.

SUNSET IN IBIZA

Ibiza town is on the south-east side of the island and as the sun sets in the west on the San Antonio side, the true postcard sunset is not in Ibiza town. To get a good view of the sun setting on this side, we recommend clients returning to Ibiza town opt to watch the sunset near Cap des Falco with the fantastic view of the sun setting, with the iconic island of Es Vedra behind. Please remember as the sun goes down, the waves often tend to pick up making the journey back to port a little bumpy. Handy Ibiza sunset times here.

SLEEP ABOARD

For overnight/sleeping aboard charters, the number of guests is regulated by licensing and determined by the number of berths available for guests and crew. There are boats with 3 up to 7 cabins. Your captain will find the best spot that is sheltered from the wind.

Once we have received your payment, you will receive a booking confirmation within 24 hours. The remaining amount of the charter, along with fuel and any extra amenities is to be paid in cash or card on the morning of the charter.

You can pay it all in advance and immediately receive a confirmation of your booking. We prefer reservations in advance, but we can often accommodate last minute charters. You never know your luck so give us a call or email us and we will try our best to accommodate you!

There is a wide variety of options. Our staff can help you figure out a plan for your day out on the waters. Many clients choose to go to Formentera via the island of Es Palmador, which is only accessible by boat. Discuss your needs with our staff and your skipper to work out the best places to go, ensuring that the wind and sea conditions are favorable at your preferred destinations.

There are two ways we calculate fuel costs.

• Our estimates are based on set routes and therefore will be the same each time.
• By calculating the number of hours the engines were running and how much fuel they burned per hour, using a meter.

This option might leave a passenger disembarking partially deaf as the merciless Russian pop music blasts onboard. A free spirit, however, will find partying on such a vessel to be an unforgettable and authentic experience that’s almost a metaphor for life in modern Russia: too loud, and sometimes too welcoming. Tickets start at $13 (800 rubles) per person.

Bigger boats offer smoother sailing and tend to attract foreign visitors because of their distinct Soviet aura. Indeed, many of the older vessels must have seen better days. They are still afloat, however, and getting aboard is a unique ‘cultural’ experience. Sometimes the crew might offer lunch or dinner to passengers, but this option must be purchased with the ticket. Here is one such  option  offering dinner for $24 (1,490 rubles).

If you want to travel in style, consider Flotilla Radisson. These large, modern vessels are quite posh, with a cozy restaurant and an attentive crew at your service. Even though the selection of wines and food is modest, these vessels are still much better than other boats.

Surprisingly, the luxurious boats are priced rather modestly, and a single ticket goes for $17-$32 (1,100-2,000 rubles); also expect a reasonable restaurant bill on top.

How to buy tickets?

Women holding photos of ships promise huge discounts to “the young and beautiful,” and give personal invitations for river tours. They sound and look nice, but there’s a small catch: their ticket prices are usually more than those purchased online.

“We bought tickets from street hawkers for 900 rubles each, only to later discover that the other passengers bought their tickets twice as cheap!”  wrote  (in Russian) a disappointed Rostislav on a travel company website.

Nevertheless, buying from street hawkers has one considerable advantage: they personally escort you to the vessel so that you don’t waste time looking for the boat on your own.

Prices start at $13 (800 rubles) for one ride, and for an additional $6.5 (400 rubles) you can purchase an unlimited number of tours on the same boat on any given day.

Flotilla Radisson has official ticket offices at Gorky Park and Hotel Ukraine, but they’re often sold out.

Buying online is an option that might save some cash. Websites such as  this   offer considerable discounts for tickets sold online. On a busy Friday night an online purchase might be the only chance to get a ticket on a Flotilla Radisson boat.

This  website  (in Russian) offers multiple options for short river cruises in and around the city center, including offbeat options such as ‘disco cruises’ and ‘children cruises.’ This other  website  sells tickets online, but doesn’t have an English version. The interface is intuitive, however.

Buying tickets online has its bad points, however. The most common is confusing which pier you should go to and missing your river tour.

“I once bought tickets online to save with the discount that the website offered,” said Igor Shvarkin from Moscow. “The pier was initially marked as ‘Park Kultury,’ but when I arrived it wasn’t easy to find my boat because there were too many there. My guests had to walk a considerable distance before I finally found the vessel that accepted my tickets purchased online,” said the man.

There are two main boarding piers in the city center:  Hotel Ukraine  and  Park Kultury . Always take note of your particular berth when buying tickets online.

Where to sit onboard?

Even on a warm day, the headwind might be chilly for passengers on deck. Make sure you have warm clothes, or that the crew has blankets ready upon request.

The glass-encased hold makes the tour much more comfortable, but not at the expense of having an enjoyable experience.

Getting off the boat requires preparation as well. Ideally, you should be able to disembark on any pier along the way. In reality, passengers never know where the boat’s captain will make the next stop. Street hawkers often tell passengers in advance where they’ll be able to disembark. If you buy tickets online then you’ll have to research it yourself.

There’s a chance that the captain won’t make any stops at all and will take you back to where the tour began, which is the case with Flotilla Radisson. The safest option is to automatically expect that you’ll return to the pier where you started.
