Roar Offshore postponed due to conditions on Fort Myers Beach

“It was difficult,” says Tim Hill, president of Roar Offshore . “We’ve been touring the beach area and looking at it month after month after month and seeing the tremendous progress that the beach has made.”

“We need a lot of space for dry pits. We need docks for wet pits,” said Hill.

Your most burning questions about the roar offshore powerboat races.

Updated on: Jun 9, 2022 5:54:16 PM

With great excitement, these amazing, high speed, powerboats are here to roar…. Oops, SOAR across the Gulf waters of Fort Myers Beach, where we are more than a little proud and hugely excited to have them for the National Championship Race Event. Part of the Offshore Powerboat Association (OPA) , the events and sport itself have dramatically increased in popularity. The National Championship is the culmination of the entire OPA race season. The Roar Offshore APBA National Championship takes place on Fort Myers Beach, in the month of October. Racing enthusiasts descend upon Fort Myers Beach by the tens of thousands!

Things to do in Key West

Some folks were concerned about the potential environmental impacts of the race. These have been mitigated and controlled by local and state agencies. In fact, there are many Florida Fish & Wildlife Commission (FWC) observers stationed strategically by the race course for the sole purpose of spotting dolphins, manatees and any living creature that could potentially be in danger. The races have gone  off without a hitch and OPA continues to take environmentally conscious precautions for the safety of our precious marine life.

OPA’s respect for our community and beaches at the forefront is clearly demonstrated. “Keep Lee County Beautiful” enlists a number of volunteers including FGCU students who work steadily, picking up debris and patrolling for refuge. Their presence alone appears to command respect for our beach environment.

The design of the course is also of great interest. The courses creation is influenced by driver feedback. Previously, powerboat races were approximately 10 miles in length and 5 miles off shore. The “Roar’ course was created for the spectators, as close to shore as possible for maximum visibility and safety. The start and finish lines were near the DiamondHead Resort, with the first turn at Junkanoo's, followed by 7 more turns and the final leg at turn 8 near the Ft. Myers Beach Pier.

Organized chaos is how organizers describes the event. What may have appeared seamless to spectators took a lot of behind the scenes efforts to come together.

An event of this nature takes tremendous planning, organization, red tape, strategy, communication, cooperation and….   Mother Nature.

Classes of boats include Super Stock Catamarans, Super Vee Extreme, Prostock Vee and Super Cats. Sleek and flashy vessels powered by either single or twin engines, dependent upon class, can range in speeds between 60 and an extraordinary 160 miles per hour. The Class One canopied catamarans have 1100 Mercury twin inboard engines that can actually max at better than 160!

Boat-Racing-piqsels.com-id-zuypz

Offshore Powerboat Racing can be traced all the way back to 1904 when a race between the south-eastern coast England to Calais, France was run. The American Powerboat Association was formed within a few years and the first race to be recorded was run in California in 1911.

Over the following decades powerboat racing became more and more popular. Our two world wars impacted just about everything and racing was no exception, however by the 1960’s the sport was back, growing stronger in popularity. Starting in the 1980’s different types of boats & classes were introduced and the sophistication of propulsion added new dynamics. Catamarans, super-boats and track styles added to the excitement and ability for spectators to view the events more readily.

Powerboat races bring fun and business to the Beach

By staff | oct 9, 2019.

powerboat races fort myers beach

Offshore racing returning to Fort Myers beach means inshore dollars being spent at local businesses, establishments, restaurants and hotels, providing an economic boost to the region during a typically slow time of year.

This weekend, the American Powerboat Association Roar Offshore event returns to Fort Myers Beach after more than a decade, where the inaugural APBA six-race series champions will be determined at the event that brings nearly 70,000 to the area.

“Everyone on the island is excited to see the return of Offshore Racing. It was a much loved event back in the day and we are all excited to welcome it back,” said Jacki Liszak, president of the Fort Myers Beach Chamber of Commerce.

The Offshore Powerboat Association and Powerboat P1 have joined forces to create the APBA World Offshore Championship series, where more than 50 teams from across the globe have tested their might in five cities, culminating this weekend on the Beach.

The races will also serve as the National Championship for the Offshore Powerboat Association.

National championship events draw large crowds, and Fort Myers Beach is the perfect place to hold an offshore racing event.

Race teams and spectators come from across the globe to compete and cheer on their favorite competitors.

“Race teams come from all over the world to compete,” Tim Hill, Roar Offshore president, said. “Both visitors and residents can enjoy a number of pre-race parties, and seize the opportunity to see the powerboats up close.”

Roar fans, while enjoying the action, also enjoy all the Beach has to offer while in the area — a positive for local businesses.

“Fort Myers Beach will benefit from the economic boost that the Roar guests will bring with them,” Liszak said. “During a usually slow time of year, Roar is drawing large crowds to the island which will result in hotel rooms, restaurants and attractions seeing an increase in their business.”

Liszak said additional rooms booked in the area result in bed tex for the county, and other things such as watersports, fishing tours, cruises, etc, all benefit the local economy.

This is usually the time of year after the busier summer months and before the snowbird flock back down — Roar will help employees and businesses create enough revenue until things start to ramp up.

“Events like Roar absolutely generates additional revenue for beach businesses, the city and the county,” Liszak said. “It allows us to get a much needed ‘boost in the arm’ during what is usually our slowest part of the year. It also helps to sustain everyone until our winter residents and guests return from up north.”

An event this size, that has events happening throughout the week and big-time racing on the weekend, traffic getting on and off the beach may be heavier than usual as the week progresses.

On Thursday, the Matanzas Pass Bridge will be closed from 5:45-6:15 as the Roar Offshore Race Boat Parade will see teams and vessels from Salty Sam’s come over the bridge and into the downtown district.

“We’ll line the streets of the entertainment district,” Hill said.

Parade time begins at 5:45 and go down Old San Carlos Boulevard into Times Square and down 2nd and 5th streets.

The boats will be parked along each side of the street and is another opportunity for fans to come out and chat with the teams and their boats.

There will be a street party after the parade downtown from 6-10 p.m. with live entertainment.

Saturday is the main event, where all 13 classes of boats will be out vying for a championship.

Classes 1-7 open the racing Saturday morning at 10 a.m.

“Superstock,” “Super Vee Extreme” and “Pro Stock Vee” will race at 11:30. “Supercat” will race at 12:30 and “Class One” and “Vee Extreme” at 2.

That night, an awards ceremony will be held at DiamondHead Beach Resort at 6:30 p.m.

“The FMB Chamber would like to thank everyone who had a hand in helping to return the Offshore Races to Fort Myers Beach,” Liszak said. “There was an incredible amount of work done behind the scenes to make this event possible and it couldn’t have been accomplished without the participation and team work of all involved. If you have never seen an Offshore Race, we encourage you to come out to the beach this weekend. This is a family friendly event that is great fun for all ages. Make sure you get here early and you utilize all of the public transportation that is available as parking on the island will be very limited. There are still plenty of hotel rooms and vacation rentals available, so why not consider spending a night or two for a ‘mini stay-cation.'”

APBA Releases 2022 Offshore Racing Schedule

With the Offshore Powerboat Association , Powerboat P1 and Race World Offshore as race-producing member-organizations, the American Power Boat Association had no shortage of offshore races to consider sanctioning this season. That subject was among the topics during the organization’s annual meeting last week in Orlando, Fla., and now the APBA competition schedule for the 2022 season is complete.

World titles in the catamaran classes will be decided at November 6-13 event in Key West, Fla.

For the eight national events, the Offshore Powerboat Association will produce the Lake of the Ozarks, St. Clair, Michigan City and Fort Myers Beach contests. The organization also will produce the Englewood Beach world championship event, as well as all the regional races. Powerboat P1 will produce the Cocoa Beach, Sarasota and St. Petersburg events. Race World Offshore will produce the Clearwater contest and weeklong Key West event.

As noted above, Englewood Beach will be the official site of APBA/UIM World Championships for all V-bottom classes. In 2021 the Southwest Florida venue was home to the APBA/UIM Worlds for the Bracket classes.

The adoption of the Mercury Racing 860 engine as a power option for the Super Cat class was not finalized during the APBA meeting—nor was a decision on a drop-race format, a setup in which teams get to drop their worst result in a given race series.

The Spec and Bracket V-bottom classes will vie for world championship honors in Englewood Beach, Fla.

“The meetings went well,” said Rich Luhrs, the chairman of APBA’s Offshore category. “We resolved a number of things. But we still have a lot of work to do before the season begins.”

2024 Roar Offshore Nationals Postponed to 2025

**FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE** from the Roar Offshore Committee

Roar Offshore Fort Myers Beach Powerboat Races 2024 Postponed Due to Infrastructure Concerns

Fort Myers Beach, FL – 3-19-24 - The organizers of the Roar Offshore Fort Myers Beach Powerboat Races regret to announce that the event, scheduled for October 11th – 13th, has been postponed due to concerns regarding the areas infrastructure post Ian.

After careful evaluation, it was determined that many aspects of the event's infrastructure, such as dry & wet pits, parking, and lodging require additional attention and preparation to ensure the safety and enjoyment of all participants. As such, the decision was made to postpone the event to October of 2025.

"We understand the disappointment this may cause, but the safety and quality of the event are paramount," said Tim Hill, President of Roar Offshore. “Being full-time residents of this resilient community, we understand the importance of an event such as Roar Offshore to help in the return to normalcy. Unfortunately the land, docks, and lodging needed for this large scale multi-day event just are not in place.”

We appreciate your understanding and continued support of Roar Offshore Fort Myers Beach Power Boat Races. For further information and updates, please visit www.roaroffshore.com or follow us on Facebook.
