Lil yachty's delightfully absurd path to 'let's start here'.

LOS ANGELES, CA - OCTOBER 29: Lil Yachty performs on the Stage during day 2 of Camp Flog Gnaw Carnival 2017 at Exposition Park on October 29, 2017 in Los Angeles, California.

Lil Yachty often worked better as an idea than a rapper. The late-decade morass of grifters like Lil Pump, amidst the self-serious reign of Future and Drake (eventual Yachty collaborators, for what it's worth), created a demand for something lighter, someone charismatic, a throwback to a time in the culture when characters like Biz Markie could score a hit or Kool Keith could sustain a career in one hyper-specific lane of rap fandom. Yachty fulfilled the role: His introduction to many was through a comedy skit soundtracked by his viral breakout "1 Night," which tapped into the song's deadpan delivery and was the perfect complement for its sleepy charm. The casual fan knows him best for a pair of collaborations in 2016: as one-half of the zeitgeist-defining single "Broccoli" with oddity D.R.A.M., or "iSpy," a top-five pop hit with backpack rapper Kyle. Yachty embodied the rapper as larger-than-life character — from his candy-colored braids to his winning smile — and while the songs themselves were interesting, you could be forgiven for wondering if there was anything substantial behind the fun, the grounds for the start of a long career.

As if to supplement his résumé, Yachty seemed to emerge as a multimedia star. Perhaps you remember him in a Target commercial; heard him during the credits for the Saved by the Bell reboot; spotted him on a cereal box; saw him co-starring in the ill-fated 2019 sequel to How High . TikTok microcelebrity followed. Then the sentences got more and more absurd: Chef Boyardee jingle with Donny Osmond; nine-minute video cosplaying as Oprah; lead actor in an UNO card game movie. Somewhere in a cross-section of pop-culture detritus and genuine hit-making talent is where Yachty resides. That he didn't fade away immediately is a testament to his charm as a cultural figure; Yachty satisfied a need, and in his refreshingly low-stakes appeal, you could imagine him as an MTV star in an alternate universe. Move the yardstick of cultural cachet from album sales to likes and he emerges as a generation-defining persona, if not musician.

Early success and exposure can threaten anyone's career, none so much as those connected to the precarious phenomenon of SoundCloud rap. Yachty's initial peak perhaps seeded his desire years later to sincerely pursue artistry with Let's Start Here , an album fit for his peculiar trajectory, because throughout the checks from Sprite and scolding Ebro interviews he never stopped releasing music, seemingly to satisfy no one other than himself and the generation of misfits that he seemed to be speaking for.

But to oversell him as a personality belittles his substantial catalog. Early mixtapes like Lil Boat and Summer Songs 2 , which prophetically brought rap tropes and pop sounds into harmony, were sustained by the teenage artist's commitment to selling the vibe of a track as he warbled its memorable hook. It was perhaps his insistence to demonstrate that he could rap, too, that most consistently pockmarked his output during this period. These misses were the necessary growing pains of a kid still finding his footing, and through time and persistence, a perceived weakness became a strength. Where his peers Lil Uzi Vert and Playboi Carti found new ways to express themselves in music, Yachty dug in his heels and became Quality Control's oddball representative, acquitting himself on guest appearances and graduating from punchline rapper to respectable vet culminating in the dense and rewarding Lil Boat 3 from 2020, Yachty's last official album.

Which is why the buzzy, viral "Poland" from the end of 2022 hit different — Yachty tapped back into the same lively tenor of his early breakthroughs. The vibrato was on ten, the beat menaced and hummed like a broken heater, he rapped about taking cough syrup in Poland, it was over in under two minutes and endlessly replayable. Yachty has already lived a full career arc in seven years — from the 2016 king of the teens, to budding superstar, to pitchman, to regional ambassador. But following "Poland" with self-aware attempts at similar virality would be a mistake, and you can't pivot your way to radio stardom after a hit like that, unless you're a marketing genius like Lil Nas X. How does he follow up his improbable second chance to grab the zeitgeist?

Lil Yachty, 'Poland'

#NowPlaying

Lil yachty, 'poland'.

Let's Start Here is Lil Yachty's reinvention, a born-again Artist's Statement with no rapping. It's billed as psychedelic rock but has a decidedly accessible sound — the sun-kissed warmth of an agreeable Tame Impala song, with bounce-house rhythms and woozy guitars in the mode of Magdalena Bay and Mac DeMarco (both of whom guest on the album) — something that's not quite challenging but satisfying nonetheless. Contrast with 2021's Michigan Boy Boat , where Yachty performed as tour guide through Michigan rap: His presence was auxiliary by function on that tape, as he ceded the floor to Babyface Ray, Sada Baby and Rio Da Yung OG; it was tantalizing curation, if not a work of his own personal artistry. It's tempting to cast Let's Start Here as another act of roleplay, but what holds this album together is Yachty's magnetic pull. Whether or not you're someone who voluntarily listens to the Urban Outfitters-approved slate of artists he's drawing upon, his star presence is what keeps you engaged here.

Yachty has been in the studio recording this album since 2021, and the effort is tangible. He didn't chase "Poland" with more goofy novelties, but he also didn't spit this record out in a month. Opener (and highlight) "The Black Seminole" alternates between Pink Floyd and Jimi Hendrix-lite references. It's definitely a gauntlet thrown even if halfway through you start to wonder where Yachty is. The album's production team mostly consists of Patrick Wemberly (formerly of Chairlift), Jacob Portrait (of Unknown Mortal Orchestra), Jeremiah Raisen (who's produced for Charli XCX, Sky Ferreira and Drake) and Yachty himself, who's established himself as a talented producer since his early days. (MGMT's Ben Goldwasser also contributed.) The group does a formidable job composing music that is dense and layered enough to register as formally unconventional, if not exactly boundary-pushing. Yachty frequently reaches for his "Poland"-inspired uber-vibrato, which adds a bewitching texture to the songs, placing him in the center of the track. Other moments that work: the spoken-word interlude "Failure," thanks to contemplative strumming from Alex G, and "The Ride," a warm slow-burn that coasts on a Jam City beat, giving the album a lustrous Night Slugs moment. "I've Officially Lost Vision" thrashes like Yves Tumor.

Yet the best songs on Let's Start Here push Yachty's knack for hooks and snaking melodies to the fore and rely less on studio fireworks — the laid-back groove of "Running Out of Time," the mournful post-punk of "Should I B?" and the slow burn of "Pretty," which features a bombastic turn from vocalist Foushee. That Yachty's vaunted indie collaborators were able to work in simpatico with him proves his left-of-center bonafides. It's a reminder that he's often lined his projects with successful non-rap songs, curios like "Love Me Forever" from Lil Boat 2 and "Worth It" from Nuthin' 2 Prove . That renders Let's Start Here a less startling turn than it may appear at first glance, and also underlines his recurring talent for making off-kilter pop music, a gift no matter the perceived genre.

At a listening event for the record, Yachty stated: "I created [this] because I really wanted to be taken seriously as an artist. Not just some SoundCloud rapper, not some mumble rapper. Not some guy that just made one hit," seemingly aware of the culture war within his own genre and his place along the spectrum of low- to highbrow. To be sure, whether conscious of it or not, this kind of mentality is dismissive of rap music as an artform, and also undermines the good music Yachty has made in the past. Holing up in the studio to make digestibly "weird" indie-rock with a cast of talented white people isn't intrinsically more artistic or valid than viral hits or a one-off like "Poland." But this statement scans less as self-loathing and more as a renewed confidence, a tribute to the album's collective vision. And people like Joe Budden have been saying "I don't think Yachty is hip-hop " since he started. So what if he wants to break rank now?

Lil Yachty entered the cultural stage at 18, and has grown up in public. It adds up that, now 25, he would internalize all the scrutiny he's received and wish to cement his artistry after a few thankless years rewriting the rules for young, emerging rappers. Let's Start Here may not be the transcendent psychedelic rock album that he seeks, but it is reflective of an era of genreless "vibes" music. Many young listeners likely embraced Yachty and Tame Impala simultaneously; it tracks he would want to bring these sounds together in a genuine attempt to reach a wider audience. Nothing about this album is cynical, but it is opportunistic, a creation in line with both a shameless mixed-media existence and his everchanging pop alchemy. The "genre" tag in streaming metadata means less than it ever has. Credit to Yachty for putting that knowledge to use.

Lil Yachty Performs At Doug Mitchell Thunderbird Sports Centre

Lil Yachty previewed an unreleased song at Camp Flog Gnaw , earlier this week, apparently titled "Gimme The Light." The moment came during his performance at the festival, which left fans hyped for the upcoming release. When Kurrco shared a clip of Yachty's new song on Twitter, fans remarked that they "need" it to drop in response.

Yachty's Camp Flog Gnaw set came as he continues to perform on The Field Trip Tour . In the coming weeks, he'll be traveling overseas with shows in Oslo, Stockholm, Berlin, Manchester, and more.

His appearance at the festival also comes after he recently remarked that hip-hop is in a " terrible place ." He had been discussing the genre during Rolling Stone‘s  "Musicians on Musicians" event in Brooklyn, New York, last week. “Hip-hop is in a terrible place,” Yachty said, as noted by  Complex . “The state of hip-hop right now is a lot of imitation. It’s a lot of quick, low-quality music being put out.” He continued: “It’s a lot less risk-taking, it’s a lot less originality. People are too safe now. Everyone is so safe. I rather take the risk than take the L.” Check out his Camp Flog Gnaw teaser for new music below.

Tyler, the Creator’s Camp Flog Gnaw Returns: Kendrick and Keem Make Live Debut as the Hillbillies, Ice Spice Draws Star-Studded Crowd and More

The Los Angeles music festival and carnival threw its first celebration in four years on Nov. 11 and 12 at Dodger Stadium.

RIOT USA, ICE SPICE

After a four-year hiatus, Tyler, the Creator’s music festival and carnival returned to Los Angeles’ Dodger Stadium on Nov. 11 and 12. In the years leading up to its pandemic-induced break, Camp Flog Gnaw was quickly becoming one of the most beloved annual music festivals in the area for its Coachella-esque approach to the live music experience: good food (local favorites like Monty’s Good Burgers and the Birrierria Michi Mexican food truck were on the menu), free carnival rides and a lineup consisting of fresh and established artists.

Popular on Variety

The remainder of the setlist was split evenly between both artists on stage, but it was the middle of the set that really shined: “m.A.A.d city” followed by “Praise God” and “Humble,” before Keem entered with “Orange Soda,” “16”(the 16th song on the setlist) and “Range Brothers.” Helicopters could be heard overhead, and the bright neon lights lit up every inch of the stadium’s lot, but every person at the festival was locked in on the duo’s high-spirited stage presence and music.

He took a short break only to give the audience a speech about having “such a huge ego.”

“[Critics say] He’s so full of himself [and] hell fucking right I’m full of myself… I’m full of me because everything I said I wanted to do, I did and I didn’t let nobody tell me nothing else. I got a resume to back it up. So everybody out there. If y’all got dreams and y’all feel some type of way about yourself that might exceed how others feel about themselves: Fuck them and don’t let that shit clouds your brain for real,” he said.

Tyler’s set also had the most elaborate stage design of all of Flog Gnaw’s performers. His was a gigantic junkyard of cars (a recurring visual theme in his work) with a large claw hovering over the stage. Kali Uchis, who had played even earlier on the same stage that evening, brought her visuals and setlist over from her “Red Moon in Venus” tour and welcomed Omar Apollo as a guest for their collab “Worth the Wait.” SZA also similarly lugged her “SOS” tour props to the stadium, with the addition of a few new quirks like the massive wrecking ball she descended on stage from.

Although acts like Teezo Touchdown, AG Club and Ice Spice had a smaller stage to work with, their crowds were just as big and just as active as some of the more hyperactive moments of the nights coming from acts like Turnstile and Willow.

“Y’all know I came all the way from the Bronx to see y’all,” Ice Spice told the crowd before diving into her usual fast-paced and hits-filled set. Billie Eilish was among the L.A.-raised stars in attendance for Ice’s performance and could be seen from watching the drill rapper in awe from the side of the stage. Tyler also made an effort to watch some of his favorite acts and could be seen at the front of the stage for Clipse to witness the rare reunion of siblings Pusha T and No Malice.

SZA closed out Sunday night at the top of her game — just a few days after receiving the leading total of nine Grammy nominations for her “SOS.” Though SZA’s microphone was cut during her last song due to city curfew, the crowd of thousands stuck around to sing her closer, “Good Days,” while dreamy images played behind the R&B star. And just like that, the weekend closed with a high-spirited note to “believe in good days” — a sentiment echoed by Tyler the night prior. Admitting the fact that COVID derailed the festival, he graciously acknowledged that “three or four years later, and y’all still care to come.”

Tyler, the Creator’s Camp Flog Gnaw festival took over the sprawling Chavez Ravine grounds surrounding Dodger Stadium this past weekend, returning for the first time since 2019 with a far-reaching lineup headlined by the host himself, along with The Hillbillies (Kendrick Lamar and cousin Baby Keem) and SZA. It was a family affair throughout the two-day fest, with Odd Future alum thoroughly represented between performances by Syd , Domo Genesis, Earl Sweathshirt, Left Brain, and Mike G, along with stand-out sets from Lil Yachty (joined by Offset), Turnstile, Kali Uchis (with guest Omar Apollo), Cuco , Paris Texas, and many more.

Elsewhere, viral sensations Ice Spice and PinkPantheress brought the crowds, rap legends Clipse saw Tyler and Yung Taco excitedly taking their set in from the pit, and revelers rode classic carnival rides and scooped up limited merch at the Golf Wang store. FLOOD photographer Wilson Lee was there to take it all in—check out the live highlights, scenery, and exclusive portraits below.

SZA takes a victory lap at Camp Flog Gnaw festival

SZA performs at Camp Flog Gnaw on Sunday.

The second and final day of Tyler, the Creator’s Camp Flog Gnaw festival, making its return after a four-year hiatus, was led by top Grammy nominee SZA and featured winning sets from an array of left-field, genre-hopping pop acts.

August Brown, Kenan Draughorne and Mikael Wood caught all the action from a sold-out Dodger Stadium.

Articulating the perils of millennial romance

How quotable are SZA’s lyrics about the cursed complexities of millennial romance? So quotable that one fun thing to do during her festival-closing set Sunday night was watching fans sing along with certain key lines — “Now I’m ovulating and I need rough sex,” from “F2F,” was a popular one — while their friends shot chaotic video clips presumably destined for social media.

A heavily abbreviated version of the elaborate arena show the 34-year-old R&B star has been touring for much of 2023, SZA’s hour-long Flog Gnaw gig served as a victory lap of sorts to the field-leading nine Grammy nominations SZA received last week, including nods for album, record and song of the year for her blockbuster “SOS” LP and its chart-topping single “Kill Bill.”

Is a victory lap the right way to describe a concert consisting of songs as full of irritation and self-doubt as “F2F,” “Blind” and “Ghost in the Machine”? On Twitter after her performance, SZA responded to a fan who’d pointed out that she hadn’t commented on the nominations by explaining that she was feeling overwhelmed and that “it gives me alotta anxiety to think of words.” (She also posted a sweet throwback photo from a previous Grammys ceremony in which Ryan Seacrest is seen interviewing the singer’s grandmother on the red carpet.)

Yet the beauty of SZA’s artistry is how vividly she articulates that anxiety in the winding melodies, the eclectic grooves and indeed the moving and hilarious words of her music, which came through here even if the careful plotting of her “SOS” live production didn’t. “I worry that I wasted the best of me on you, babe,” she told one ex in “Good Days.” Dude should be so lucky. — Mikael Wood

At Camp Flog Gnaw, Tyler, the Creator, Kendrick Lamar and Ice Spice bring star power

After a four-year hiatus, Tyler, the Creator’s Camp Flog Gnaw festival made a triumphant return to Dodger Stadium.

Nov. 12, 2023

Upstaged by a former labelmate

In January 2023, Lil Yachty took an abrupt left-turn on his album “Let’s Start Here,” a psychedelic experiment that traded bars and punch lines for warbling melodies drenched in reverb. During his appearance at Camp Flog Gnaw, however, the ambition of that album felt like a distant memory, as Yachty opted to go the full set without so much as a single lyric from his most recent body of work.

Instead, Yachty built his set around post-album loosies designed for the mosh pits. Mid-set, he produced his former Quality Control labelmate Offset, who stole the show with a three-song medley consisting of “Say My Grace” and his verse from “Bad and Boujee,” along with the Yachty-Migos collaboration “Peek a Boo.”

Performance-wise, Yachty didn’t offer much aside from empty screams and occasional ad-libs over the backing tracks, and his energy visibly slumped after security paused the show to check on pinned fans in the crowd who needed assistance. But before he left, he made sure to promote his upcoming L.A. stop on his “Field Trip” tour. — Kenan Draughorne

Gen Z heartthrobs

Before SZA’s headlining appearance, Flog Gnaw’s main stage hosted back-to-back sets by Dominic Fike and Rex Orange County — hip-hop-attuned guitar guys who’ve parlayed Tyler, the Creator’s enthusiasm into full-fledged careers as sensitive Gen Z heartthrobs. Each pointed to his own lodestars: Playing tunes from this year’s excellent (if overlooked) “Sunburn,” Fike channeled Sublime and Red Hot Chili Peppers, while Rex Orange County located the midpoint between Frank Ocean and Elvis Costello. — M.W.

‘Euphoria’s’ Dominic Fike is on the verge of pop stardom, whether he likes it or not

Learning to have fun onstage

Dressed in Y2K-era low-rise jeans and clutching a Hello Kitty handbag, PinkPantheress sauntered onto the Flog stage and told the crowd she planned to play some new stuff as well as some old stuff — the old stuff being from late 2020, when this 22-year-old British singer and producer began posting songs online that almost immediately attracted a devoted following (and eventually led to a deal with a major label, which released her debut studio LP last week).

The PinkPantheress sound is scrappy yet wistful, with echoes of early-2000s pop pinging beneath her high, sighing vocals. One of her tricks is to throw in some wholly unanticipated texture like the Irish fiddle licks that crop up in “Angel,” which appears on the “Barbie” soundtrack and which here occasioned a cameo by a guy doing “Riverdance”-style moves as PinkPantheress sang about her baby going away. Another is building songs that move 10% to 15% faster than you’d expect, such as her and Ice Spice ’s smash “Boy’s a Liar, Pt. 2,” which she performed less than 24 hours after her duet partner did so in the same spot.

A textbook bedroom-pop operator, PinkPantheress earned harsh reviews early on with live gigs that seemed to put her well outside her comfort zone. Three not-so-long years into her career, though, she’s learning to have fun onstage: After announcing that her “t—” had nearly fallen out of her halter top, she said, “I just dropped an album,” then added: “Who the f— cares?” — M.W.

A new beginning

Cuco , the 25-year-old, Hawthorne singer-songwriter born Omar Banos, rocketed to fame for his bilingual, dryly funny love songs, but the last few years have been much more somber for him.

His sound is rooted in the plaintive longing of his favorite oldies (his viral breakout was a Santo & Johnny cover) and effect-washed post-punk that’s long imbued the L.A. underground. Singles like “Lo Que Siento” got him a deal with Interscope and the weight of expectations that came with it.

Yet after taking time off to work on substance abuse and other issues, Cuco returned in 2022 with “Fantasy Gateway.” On Sunday, he found fresh energy to go deeper into the psych-rock furnace. Song like “Keeping Tabs,” with lyrics about “getting high like every single day,” now rang with more regret than languid appeal. “Junkies and Rarities,” off his new EP, “Hitchhiker,” hit the throttle with Krautrock drums and vicious guitar solos. Whatever work he’s done in private, it showed in his performance, and this felt like the start of a new era. — August Brown

Climbing the Smith ranking

After a tumultuous few years in the Smith household, it’s high time to inaugurate Willow as the family’s lead ambassador to pop culture. The 23-year-old singer-songwriter — the daughter of Will and Jada Pinkett Smith — has more than proved her mettle in rock since her 2015 debut LP. Her Flog Gnaw performance triangulated perfectly among the emo revivalism, metal and hardcore shredding and genre-hopping camaraderie that the festival champions.

Willow’s earnest vocal acrobatics owe a lot to Paramore’s Hayley Williams, but she found even more coiled-spring melodrama in songs like “Why?” and “Split.” She played a new single, “Alone,” that had some jazzy, jagged percussion and Björk-worthy vocal quivers, showing she’s getting only more ambitious with time. When her brother Jaden made a cameo for their duet “Summertime in Paris,” he wore a shirt that read “Willow’s Brother” —a fair ranking, given the occasion. — A.B.

Norilsk: The city built by gulag prisoners where Russia guards its Arctic secrets

Environmental activists are frustrated by how authorities handled a diesel spill which poured into two Arctic rivers in late May.

Arctic suffers worst ever industrial spill

The drive from Norilsk airport to the city takes you past mile after mile of crumbling, Soviet-era factories.

It looks like an endless, rusting scrapyard - a jumble of pipes, industrial junk and frost-bitten brickwork. If you were looking for an industrial apocalypse film setting, this would be your place - but you're unlikely to get the permissions.

Norilsk was built in Stalin's times by gulag prisoners. This gritty industrial city is a testament to their endurance both of the cruelty of Stalin's regime and of the harsh polar climate. There were no thoughts then on how to build to protect the environment, just to survive it.

Norilsk in Russia. Pic: Anastasya Leonova

Vasily Ryabinin doesn't think much has changed, at least in ecological terms. He used to work for the local branch of the federal environmental watchdog, Rosprirodnadzor, but quit in June after exposing what he says was a failure to investigate properly the environmental impact of the gigantic diesel spill which poured into two Arctic rivers in late May.

At 21,000 tonnes, it was the largest industrial spill in the polar Arctic .

Despite the Kremlin declaring a federal emergency and sending a host of different agencies to participate in the clean-up, just last week Mr Ryabinin and activists from Greenpeace Russia found another area where technical water used in industrial processes was being pumped directly into the tundra from a nearby tailing pond. Russia's investigative committee has promised to investigate.

"The ecological situation here is so bad," Mr Ryabinin says.

"The latest constructions such as the tailing pond at the Talnack ore-processing plant were built exclusively by Nornickel chief executive Vladimir Potanin's team and supposedly in accordance with ecological standards, but on satellite images you can see that all the lakes in the vicinity have unnatural colours and obviously something has got into them."

Nornickel Plant and container (on the left) which had the leak. Pic: Anastasya Leonova

Mining company Nornickel would disagree. It has admitted flagrant violations at the tailing pond and suspended staff it deems responsible at both the Talnack plant and at Norilsk Heat and Power plant no 3 where the diesel spill originated from.

On Thursday it appointed Andrey Bougrov, from its senior management board, to the newly-created role of senior vice president for environmental protection. It has a clear environmental strategy, provides regular updates on the status of the spill, and its Twitter feed is filled with climate-related alerts.

But what investors read is very different to the picture on the ground.

21,000 tonnes of diesel oil has spilled into two rivers in Norilsk

Norilsk used to be a closed city - one of dozens across the Soviet Union shut off to protect industrial secrets. Foreigners need special permissions approved by the Federal Security Service (FSB) to enter the region. It would take an invitation from Nornickel to make that happen and, for the past month since the spill, that has not been forthcoming.

Unlike in Soviet times, Russian citizens are now free to come and go. That's why our Sky News Moscow team were able to fly in and travel around the city, even if getting to the spill site was blocked. What they were able to film provides a snapshot of the immense challenge Russia faces in upgrading its Soviet-era industrial infrastructure, particularly at a time when climate change is melting the permafrost on which much of it was built.

The Russian city of Norilsk. Pic: Anastasya Leonova

Just downwind from one of the rusting factories on the city outskirts is a huge expanse of dead land. The skeletal remains of trees stand forlorn against the howling Arctic winds. Sulphur dioxide poisoning has snuffed the life out of all that lived here. Norilsk is the world's worst emitter of sulphur dioxide by a substantial margin.

"For 80km south of here everything is dead," Mr Ryabinin says, "and for at least 10km in that direction too. Everything here depends on the wind."

Sample took by Vasily Ryabinin near the Nornickel plant in Norilsk, Russia, on the day of an accident. Pic: Vasily Ryabinin

Immediately after the spill, Mr Ryabinin filmed and took samples from the Daldykan river just a few kilometres from the fuel tank which had leaked. By that point the river was a churning mix of diesel and red sludge dredged up from the riverbed by the force of the leak. Norilsk's rivers have turned red before and the chemical residues have sunk to the bottom, killing all life there. Nothing has lived in those rivers for decades.

In his capacity as deputy head of the local environmental watchdog, Mr Ryabinin says he insisted that he be allowed to fly further north to check the levels of contamination in Lake Pyasino and beyond.

Nornickel at the time claimed the lake was untouched by the spill. Mr Ryabinin says his boss encouraged him to let things be.

"I can't be sure I would have found anything, but this sort of confrontation - making sure I didn't go there with a camera, let alone with bottles for taking samples, it was all very clear to me. It was the final straw."

Rosprirodnadzor refused to comment to Sky News on Mr Ryabinin's allegations or suggestions that the agency was working hand in hand with Nornickel.

Georgy Kavanosyan is an environmental blogger with a healthy 37,000 following on YouTube. Shortly after the spill, he set out for Lake Pyasino and to the Pyasina River beyond to see how far the diesel had spread.

"We set out at night so that the Norilsk Nickel security wouldn't detect us. I say at night, but they've got polar nights there now, north of the Arctic Circle. So it's still light but it's quieter and we managed to go past all the cordons."

He is one of the few to have provided evidence that the diesel has in fact travelled far beyond where the company admits. Not just the 1,200km (745m) length of Lake Pyasino but into the river beyond.

He says his measurements indicated a volume of hydrocarbons dissolved in the water of between two and three times normal levels. He thinks after he published his findings on YouTube, the authorities' vigilance increased.

Greenpeace Russia have spent the last two weeks trying to obtain samples from Lake Pyasino and the surrounding area. They have faced difficulties getting around and flying their samples out for independent analysis.

They are now waiting for results from a laboratory in St Petersburg but say the samples remain valid technically for just four days after collection and that they weren't able to make that deadline due to the authorities' actively obstructing their work.

Vasily Ryabinin and Elena Sakirko from Greenpeace. Pic: Anastasya Leonova

Elena Sakirko from Greenpeace Russia specialises in oil spills and says this has happened to her before. This time, a police helicopter flew to the hunter's hut where they were staying and confiscated the fuel for the boat they were using. Then a deputy for the Moscow city parliament tasked with bringing the samples back from Norilsk was forced to go back empty-handed.

"We were told at the airport we needed permission from the security department of Nornickel," Ms Sakirko says. "We asked them to show us some law or statement to prove that this was legal or what the basis for this was, but they haven't showed us anything and we still don't understand it."

Nornickel announced this week that the critical stage of the diesel spill is over. The company is now finalising dates for a press tour for foreign media and for other international environmentalists.

Mr Ryabinin thinks this should have happened weeks ago.

"If we don't let scientists come to the Arctic region to evaluate the impact of the accident, then in the future if anything similar happens, we won't know what to do."

A spokesperson for Nornickel said the company "is actively cooperating with the scientific community and will meticulously assess both the causes and effects of the accident."

Nornickel considers permafrost thawing to be the primary cause of the accident, but is waiting for the end of investigation before making a final statement, the spokesperson said.

They added that the company "accepts full responsibility for the incidents on its sites these past two months and holds itself accountable for any infrastructural deficits or poor decisions by personnel.

"The imperative is to do everything to clean up our sites, instil a stronger culture of transparency and safety in our workforce, and ensure that such situations do not occur in the future."
