TURKISH GULETS

The most popular type of traditional yacht for the "blue cruise" is the gulet..

The traditional Turkish Gulet is a handmade vessel crafted from wood by highly skilled master craftsmen. Also known as motor sailors, Gulets are extremely comfortable and ideal for long sea voyages as well as inshore coastal trips.

The origin of Gulets can be traced back to the Bodrum area in Turkey but the growth of a demanding market led to their construction being started in Bozburun, Marmaris, Fethiye and Istanbul. High quality and durable wood such as teak, maun and iroko are chiefly used to construct beautiful and sturdy Gulets.

GULET TYPES

Gulet: The most popular type of traditional yacht for the "Blue Cruise" is the gulet. It is a cruising yacht with large, rounded stern area which is well-suited for comfortable eating and lounging. Gulets usually have ketch (marconi) or schooner-rigging, with one, two or three foresails. Their lenghts change between 15 to 55 meters and they accommodate 6 to 24 persons in 3 to 12 cabins with private shower and WC.

Aynakic (Ketch): It has a raised, squared-off stern that allows space for additional cabins below compared to a gulet. There may be a large master cabin at the stern. They accommodate 6 to 24 persons in 3 to 12 double bedded cabins with private shower and WC. They are generally ketch (marconi)-rigging and measure 15 to 55 meters.

Tirhandil: It is the oldest type of local wooden boat with a pointed stern which is suited best for sailing in Aegean waters. Originally most had lateen sails; now the rigging varies from sloop to cutter to gaff. They normally measure between 11 to 24 meters in lenght and accommodate 6 to 10 persons in 3 to 5 double bedded cabins with private shower and WC.

GULET CHARTER TYPES

Gulet Yacht Charter: Charter a Gulet Yacht to enjoy a luxurious private holiday at sea with your family and close friends. Whether you choose to hire a traditional, classic, luxury or super luxury Gulet Yacht to suit your budget, you can look forward to a memorable vacation experience that will leave you wanting to come back again!

Cabin Charters : Could not hire the entire Gulet for yourself? Do not worry! You can still make the most of your holiday by hiring a cabin charter to share a beautiful cruising experience with your family or friends or expand your network and make new friends on board!

FACILITIES ON GULET

The design of traditional Turkish Gulets has indeed evolved along the ages and a modern day Gulet is a plush and comfortable blue cruising boat varying from 11 to 55 meters (36-180 feet) in length. The length of the Gulet is proportional to its passenger capacity. Gulets are furnished with great taste and style to offer maximum comfort and facilities to the passengers on board. Each standard cabin in a Gulet has portholes, wardrobe, mirror, air conditioning system, en-suite shower and WC. Master cabins are furnished beautifully with sofa sets, dresser, work desk and Jacuzzi or hydro massage shower to pamper the guests on board. There are separate cabins for the crew.

The deck area is exceptionally spacious and complemented by the finest sailing equipment, sun mattresses and cushions so that passengers can enjoy a pleasurable vacation at sea! Whether the guests want to bask in the sun or enjoy adrenaline-pumping surfing at sea, there are all sorts of arrangements available on the charter for them to avail and spend their time. Passengers can also relax at the large aft deck that is furnished with a comfortable aft traditional deck sofa or enjoy fine dining in spacious salons in the dining area or simply lounge about in the beautiful and fully equipped galley.

SAFETY ON GULET

Passenger safety and comfort are of top most priority on the Gulets. Each Gulet has abundant storage of fresh water and fuel. Additionally, there are VHF radio, GSM telephones, full navigation and safety equipment such as life raft, life jackets and fire extinguishers as well as TV and DVD player, refrigerator, ice maker, deep freezer, fully equipped galley and joker boat that help to curb any crisis and allow you to enjoy your vacation at sea to the fullest.

Turkish Gulets: Everything You Need to Know

What are Turkish Gulets? And (More Importantly) How Do You Pronounce "Gulet"?

If you've spent any time in seaside towns overlooking the Mediterranean, you've likely seen these distinctive double- and triple-masted wooden boats cruising along the coast. Often referred to as "classic" or "traditional", these old-fashioned-looking Turkish yachts are a relatively recent holiday concept dating back to the 1970s. True, they evolved from wooden cargo ships used by fishermen and sponge-divers, but today's gulets are a far cry from the working ships of yore.

  • All About Turkish Gulets

All About Gulets

Modern day gulets (pronounced goo-lets ) are hand-crafted wooden boats designed and built in shipyards along the southwest coast of Turkey, exclusively for leisure and enjoyment. Design-wise, they have low profiles, making them very stable in the water (terrific if you're prone to sea-sickness ) and well-suited for exploring shallow bays and coves where larger boats are unable to venture.

Functioning like floating hotels, Turkish gulets come with an infinite range of options – from the most basic 1-star hostel to opulent, 5-star, ultra-luxury accommodations, and everything in between.

  • Gulets are always crewed. Passengers don't need any sailing knowledge or experience to enjoy a gulet holiday. (The gulet's size and service level dictate the number of crew onboard.)
  • Every gulet features an open sundeck for sun-seekers, and shaded areas for those who prefer to avoid the sun.
  • Gulet cabins are smaller than hotel rooms, but that rarely poses a problem for guests. After all, you'll spend most of your vacation time on deck, in the water, or exploring your destination – and very little time indoors.
  • There are always separate sleeping quarters on gulets, but many travellers enjoy sleeping outdoors – listening to the quiet lapping of the water (a sound called susesi in Turkish) and watching stars in the dark night sky. (Whether indoors or out, some claim the best sleep of their lives is on a boat - due to the gentle rocking of the waves.)
  • Boat galleys (kitchens) are incredibly tiny compared to restaurant kitchens – but the gulet's cook is master of the small space and responsible for preparing all meals, so there's no need to worry about how it all works.

All Turkish gulets feature private cabins and bathrooms, combined with plenty of shared living space on deck for meals, sunbathing and otherwise relaxing. But that's where the similarities end. Customized features include anything from basic air-conditioning to surround-sound theatres and Jacuzzi hot tubs. Whatever amenities you need, there's a gulet to suit your needs.

The Evolution of Gulets

As recently as the early 1970s, people who wanted to explore the splendour of the Turquoise coast by boat had to have access to a private yacht, or sail aboard a fishing or sponge boat. It was an "either / or" situation – you could cruise in the absolute comfort of the rich and famous (provided you yourself were rich and famous, or were friendly with someone who was), or you could rough it on a working boat with few creature comforts. There were no options in between.

Fortunately, as more and more people discovered the joys of leisurely sailing Turkey's picturesque coastline, savvy ship builders in the Bodrum area modified their working boat designs to better suit the needs of travellers from all walks of life. And thus evolved the modern Turkish gulet.

Gulet Construction & Maintenance

Turkish gulets are now constructed in numerous shipyards along the southwest coast.

Master craftsmen employ teak, mahogany, oak and other hardwoods in the construction of these sturdy wooden yachts. Pine is sometimes used too, as it is a less expensive option, but the softer wood does not last as long as its hardwood counterparts.

The construction process - which has been used since the 1800s – is called "plank on frame" and is similar for all gulets – whether fancy or plain. It can take more than a year to build a single gulet!

  • First the gulet's frame is built to provide the foundation for the rest of construction.
  • Then, starting from the keel (the "backbone of the boat"), solid timber planks are fastened to the sides of the boat, forming the hull. These planks are approximately 4cm thick, giving the hull its incredible strength and durability.
  • Once the hull planking is complete, cotton or oakum caulking is methodically pounded into every crack between the boards. Caulking a solid wood boat is quite an art, and people who specialize in it are kept busy each year when boats return to the shipyard for annual maintenance.
  • After caulking, several coats of water-proof plaster are applied to the underwater portion of the hull. And, after sanding, the boat is painted or varnished before being launched into the sea.
  • The masts, engine(s), electrical and plumbing systems, water and fuel tanks, air conditioning system, etc. are incorporated into the boat as it is built.
  • The deck and interior structure (cabins, bathrooms, galley, salon, seating areas, etc.) are left to the end of the construction process, and are built once everything else is in place.

When a wood boat is first launched (or re-launched after lengthy time in the shipyard), it is not uncommon for it to take on some water (i.e., leak). Assuming the caulking and plastering have been done correctly, the leaking stops within a few days as the dry planks absorb water and swell tightly together.

Gulets are exceptionally safe boats, but regular maintenance is required to ensure their on-going seaworthiness. Each year, the hull must be carefully inspected for leaks. Damaged timbers must be removed and replaced. Barnacles must be scraped off (the parasites bore into the wood, potentially damaging the integrity of the hull). And caulking, plaster, and paint must be re-applied as necessary.

A well-built, well-maintained Turkish gulet can last for decades. But even a few years of neglect will lead to a wooden boat's speedy demise.

Boat Safety

Commercial gulets in Turkey undergo annual inspection by the Harbour Master, including verification and testing of their navigational and safety equipment - including fire and smoke detectors, life jackets, life rings, life rafts, fire extinguishers and other fire fighting equipment, and safety flares.

Fire is the biggest threat to these highly varnished, wood vessels – so smoking is never permitted inside the boat. Some gulets allow smoking on deck, but guests are cautioned to be particularly careful when doing so. The gulet's crew will advise you of all safety rules and protocols before departing on a cruise.

Sailing on a Turkish Gulet

Gulets are classified as motor-sailers because they are powered by one or more engines, which can be supplemented with sails. In actual fact, they are not very efficient sailboats because of their massive size. But, if you're not in a hurry to get to your destination, it is an incredibly peaceful experience to bob along the sea powered solely by the wind.

One benefit enjoyed by gulets with sails is the ability to stabilize in rough water. With the sails raised, the vessel is less prone to chiming (rocking back and forth) when waves hit the hull from the side. To ensure the most comfortable cruise holiday, nervous sailors, or those prone to " mal de mer " should confirm whether their boat has working sails before booking. (Surprisingly, not all gulets are equipped with sails. And, even more surprisingly, not all gulet captains and crew are knowledgeable about sailing!)

Blue Cruises

From their humble beginnings in Bodrum, these purpose-built leisure boats have slowly permeated into the rest of the Mediterranean, and are now popular with holiday makers in Greece, Italy, Montenegro and Croatia. Often referred to as " Blue Cruises ", gulet holidays combine all the elements of a seaside resort getaway with the chance to travel and explore a variety of beautiful locations along the coast. We can't imagine a nicer way to vacation. Can you?

TURKEY GULET YACHT

A gulet is a classic wooden, motorized, and sailing boat that is perfect for long sea voyages and close-to-land cruises.

Traditional Turkish gulets are made-to-order boats that skilled artisans construct from wood. Because they provide a very comfortable cruising experience, gulets, often referred to as motor sailboats, are perfect for coastal excursions and lengthy sea cruises.

We are aware that the first gulet construction began in Turkey’s Bodrum region. However, production is also taking place in Bozburun, Marmaris, Fethiye, and Istanbul as a result of the expanding market and demand.

Types of Gulets

Gulet: The gulet is the most well-known traditional yacht design for Blue Cruise. The dining table and seating area are located at the back of the gulets.

There is typically a sofa and enough sun pillows out front for everyone. The entrance to the cabins is through this hall, which features a dining table according to the size of the gulet and an interior hall.

The yacht’s round stern causes the guest quarters to be in the front, while the aft side is typically used as the technical area. The ability to sail is marginally superior to that of Aynakic gulets.

The AFT parts of Aynakic gulets are not round, as they are in gulets, but rather are in a structure with raised corners, which is a key characteristic that sets them apart from ordinary gulets.

They typically use this space for the suite room, or what we would refer to as the “master cabin.” All other details are the same as for gulets, with the exception of this characteristic.

Tirhandil is the oldest local wooden boat type with a pointed stern and the best-suited wooden yacht for sailing. Today, the equipment has changed from sloop to lifeboat and from sail to sail; the majority of them are three-corner sails.

They do not construct them on particularly lengthy decks, often between 15 and 25 meters, like other kinds. The same standards apply to their cabins. If you like sailing, this is the best option.

Accommodation on Gulets

Traditional Turkish gulets have evolved in appearance over time. A modern gulet today resembles a high-end floating hotel and can be anywhere between 15 and 55 meters (50 and 180 feet) in length. Gulet length and passenger capacity are not inversely related.

A 20-meter gulet, for instance, might contain three guest cabins or six. The cabins must be smaller in order to accommodate additional cabins of the same size. But in general, taller gulets make up vessels with six or more multi-cabs.

Every cabin on gulets of different shapes and sizes was created with the needs of the passenger in mind, including a bed, wardrobe, separate shower, and toilet.

However, extra comfort amenities like sofa sets, dressers, work desks, and jacuzzis are also available, depending on the size of the rooms and the level of luxury of the boat. There are separate cabins for personnel in the guest cabins.

Gulet Passenger Safety

On gulets, the welfare of the passengers comes first. As a result, each gulet contains numerous fuel and clean water tanks. Additionally, it features a complete set of navigation and safety equipment, including life jackets, fire extinguishers, GSM phones, and VHF radios.

All of these safety precautions and modern technologies prevent any potential emergency and enhance your seaside vacation.

Types of Gulet Charters

Private yacht charter: When you charter a gulet, the entire vessel—along with its crew—is yours for the duration of the rental period. Within the parameters outlined in your rental agreement, you are free to take any route during the rental term.

And you are not restricted to any set timetable; you can plan your vacation however you like. You can purchase our ready-made menu packages and avoid sticking to a typically restricted menu, just as you can shop for your rations.

Renting a private gulet is the perfect choice if you want to spend a luxurious vacation at sea with your family or enjoy the sea and entertainment with close friends.

For a trip you won’t forget and wish to repeat, choose from traditional, classic, luxury, or ultra-luxury yacht charter options to suit your needs and experience.

Cabin rentals : On a shared tour, one or more cabins may be rented. The schedule for the route, lunch times, and meal components remain the same.

The purpose of in-cabin trips, which they typically arrange on classic gulets, is to experience the spirit and joy of the Blue Cruise rather than taking a vacation on a luxury yacht. Let’s say you can’t organize enough groups to rent a private gulet or you go over your budget.

Then, a cabin rental could provide you with a relaxing blue-tour vacation. Renting a cabin will help you make the most of your vacation by allowing you to cruise in style, widen your circle of friends, and meet new acquaintances on the boat.

Local tour operators, especially those from other parts of Europe, have a strong interest in the Greek islands in the Aegean Sea. The great thing about a gulet rental vacation is that you can visit some of these islands. Rhodes, Symi, and Kos all have ports that are close to the Turkish shore. These are great islands for people who want to see places in both areas. Between the Greek islands in the west and the many Greek islands in the north, you can mix and match a lot of different options.

Why is the list of “award winning / highly recommended yachts” so useful for me.

  • It will provide you with a clear idea of the best available option for your yacht charter
  • It will help you better understand and determine your preferences and expectations
  • It will help us to tailor a search of the most appropriate yachts for you, and negotiate the best price with the yacht owner/s

There are thousands of yachts for charter, and selecting the one that best suits your group’s preferences, budget, and taste is challenging, especially if you are a first-time charterer.

Our hand-picked, “award-winning”, highly recommended yachts are the best in class. The list will give you a clear understanding of what is possible, and the costs, without the need to cross-reference against the hundreds of other yachts. The list provides a refined, personalized selection of up to 10 vessels, across different price ranges, so you can make an informed decision.

It will highlight the best “value for money” yachts; and subject to availability on your chosen dates at the destination you desire, everything will come together for a memorable experience at sea.

This is a process of elimination that will deliver the most appropriate yacht for your holiday.

How do I ensure the most suitable final selection?

It is crucial that we, at Goolets, gain a thorough understanding of your preferences and expectations from the beginning, so that we can undertake a comprehensive, tailored search. Please consider the following:

  • Do you prefer modern or classic yachts?
  • Do you prioritize the size of the yacht or the age of the yacht?
  • What do you expect from your crew? Highly attentive at all times, or more in the background?
  • Would you prefer a younger crew, full of energy and sociable; or less so?
  • Do you need a faster yacht to explore more places and cover more ground, or is this not so important?
  • Do you prefer larger cabins and a spacious salon/living area, or you are more of an outdoor person?
  • Do you prefer a more luxurious yacht, or to allocate more of your budget to food/beverages and activities (water sports/land excursions/tours/bike rental, etc)?

Once we have noted your preferences, we will compile a shortlist of possibilities comprising 5 to 10 yachts of varying specifications (size, interior style, type of crew, etc); following which, we will narrow this down to 2 or 3 options, all of which would make excellent choices.

This process can be repeated with multiple permutations to arrive at the most suitable selection.

This process - refined over the past 15 years - delivers successful charters and satisfied customers.

What is the cost of a yacht charter?

We specialize in crewed vessels, where prices can range anywhere from € 5,000 per week up to more than € 1 million per week. Most of our charters fall into three price levels:

  • From € 10,000 to € 30,000 per week
: This price range has the largest variety of yachts, and includes smaller vessels - motor and sail, gulets, classic yachts, and catamarans.  When booking, it is important to ensure proper maintenance inspections have been carried out, and the crews are professionally trained, speak fluent English, and can provide excellent service.  Around 30% of our customers book vessels in this range.
  • From € 30,000 to € 100,000 per week:
This price level is becoming more popular every season. It includes a wide range of yachts, traditional and modern. These are high-specification vessels offering every imaginable comfort. Around 50% of our clients book yachts in this price range.
  • From € 100,000 per week
: This price level includes ultra-luxury vessels such as mega yachts. These are the most highly sought-after charter yachts in the world, with a wide range of high-end water “toys” onboard - including jet skis, a helipad, and even a submarine. These charters are very bespoke and every detail is managed to cater to exacting requirements.  A small percentage of our clients book these superyachts.

Is the cost of a personal charter manager included?

Yes, Goolets’ services are included in the base charter rate.

Booking your holiday with us includes:

  • A dedicated, personal yacht expert : one of our team will be assigned to you and will oversee every detail of your charter.
  • A personal concierge /customer support person : when you book a yacht with us, you will also be assigned a destination expert who can advise on routes, activities, and local cuisine.  She/he will help design your charter to your specifications to maximize your cruise.
  • A destination manager : a person from within our team responsible for the time you spend ashore at each local destination / stop-off, ensuring a seamless and positive experience.
  • All these costs are incorporated into the base charter fee.

How do you help me plan the itinerary?

For each destination, we provide all the most popular itineraries/routes that are being followed.

The first step is to go through the itinerary and determine your starting point. This usually covers check-in and check-out locations, and some of the highlights (islands, towns, nature parks, bays, locations), that you would prefer to visit.

Second, the tailor-made route is refined to maximize each port of call. You can elect to stay longer in some places and omit others.

Third, we customize your itinerary according to your group structure and preferences. If you have small children or teenagers, or if you are an active group of older people traveling without children, or if you are in your 30s traveling with friends who like to party, you can all follow the same route. You can all arrive at the same island, for example, yet experience it in a completely different way:

  • Families with young children: we will find the best and safest sandy beaches where you can swim and relax
  • Teenagers might enjoy activities such as water sports
  • Older groups may wish to visit historic places, enjoy a leisurely lunch at a local restaurant, or visit a wine cellar
  • Those who like to party might wish to sleep during the day and stay up til the wee hours.

How do you help me plan the activities for the route/itinerary I select?

When we have the basis for the itinerary and your group structure (age, wishes, expectations) we construct your wishlist and discuss it with the Captain.

We have successfully organized thousands of charter cruises for every conceivable group size so we have a thorough understanding of what is required to make your trip a success.

What Is The Reservation Process?

Your first point of contact at Goolets will be with a Concierge Assistant /Yacht Planner. This involves a full review and confirmation of all of your wishes. This information is collated, and then we confirm availability with the yacht owner. We then prepare the necessary paperwork including the charter contract which is signed three ways - by you (the charterer), by us (the broker), and by the yacht owner. Upon payment of a 50% deposit, the yacht booking is secured.

Your wishlist is compiled and the planning for your trip commences - usually one or two months before departure. You will be sent a questionnaire where you will confirm the passenger names, your menu preferences, any food allergies, whether you need airport transfers booked, and so on. We communicate with the yacht’s crew and create a day-by-day itinerary.

Final payments are made 4 weeks before departure, and all relevant travel documents and destination advice are issued.  The crew is briefed on any last-minute requests.

At check-in state, our destination experts will arrange everything on the ground to ensure an easy embarkation.

We stay in contact throughout your holiday to ensure everything is going as planned.

Turkish Gulet Cruise Yachts

Last Updated on June 11, 2022

Today, Turkey's wooden gulets are configured mostly as motor-sailers, with powerful diesel engines to provide primary power and sails to provide either additional power or primary power in the case of strong winds. This means, when the wind blows, you can sail silently and go wherever you want with reliable motor power.

Turkish gulets come in many sizes, from small 15-meter (50-foot)-long craft with the necessary equipment to large, luxurious  33-meter  (108-foot) air-conditioned vessels with every convenience and luxury.

What is a Gulet?

G ulet, derived from the French golette (or Schooner), is a traditional Turkish broad-beamed wooden coastal sailing vessel with a raised bow, a broad, flat stern, main foremast, and a secondary mast aft.

Gulets are particularly good as pleasure sailing vessels because of their broadbeam, which creates expansive deck space.

A  gulet  may have from 3 to 12 two-person  cabins  (for 6 to 24 people), but 5- and 6-cabin vessels capable of sleeping 10 to 12 voyagers are most common. (The 2- or 3-person crew usually  sleeps in a lazarette at the bow.)

Many gulet cabins have private  heads  (toilets) and  sinks , some even have private  fresh-water showers , though communal showers are more common (if the vessel has a shower).

The  stern deck  of a gulet is broad, fitted with a low, wide  cushioned bench  all around which is perfect for lounging, reading, relaxing or napping. The stern deck area, shaded by an awning if the sun is hot, is large enough for a  small table for games, drinks or simple meals. For sunbathing, the foredeck is the place.

A gulet's  main cabin  is fairly spacious, high enough for the tallest voyager to stand erect, with provisions for tables to seat all the voyagers for meals, meetings or evening entertainment.

Fittings and furnishings range from pine and stainless steel to rich mahogany and burnished brass.

"Gulet in perfect condition. Crew 100% efficient. Cook and all meals 100%. Attention to detail 100%. We were a group of 8 adults and could not find one complaint after 7 days on the wonderful Kaya Guneri 11. Looking forward to returning for another adventure along the Turkish coastline." Read More...

Itineraries

Itineraries   range based on the personal preference of the tourist and the options offered by the agency providing the gulet experience.

Typical yacht  charter agreements  in Turkey include the yacht, crew, insurance, fuel for four hours' motoring per day (on average), standard port taxes and fees. Some  meals , soft drinks, water and local (that is, Turkish domestic) alcoholic drinks ( beer ,  wine ,  raki , brandy, gin, etc.) are included in some charter agreements, or may be ordered by the voyagers and paid for separately.

Crew  tips/gratuities  of 5% to 10% of the charter fee are traditionally given to the captain at the end of the voyage, to be shared among the crew.

A Quick Guide to Budget Gulet Sailing in Turkey for Backpackers

gulets turkish boat

You won’t find a better way to explore Turkey’s Turquoise Coast than from the decks of a gulet (a traditional wooden boat). But did you know you can experience a blue cruise like this on a backpacker’s budget? You can sail the stunning Turkish Riviera from Fethiye to Olympos on a 4-day cabin charter from just $260. That’s crazy cheap.

Imagine this…

Watching a display of shooting stars as you drift off to sleep, no noise but the waves lapping against the side of the boat. Waking up to the sunrise in a secluded cove, to the smell of pine and herbs and honey. Padding barefoot along the deck, bracing yourself for a dive into water that sparkles like gemstones. Afterwards, you plot the day’s adventures over a breakfast spread of tomato, cheese, cucumber, olives, coffee, bread, and jams.

The catch? For the cheapest prices, you’ll have to share a boat and can expect the facilities to be basic. Oh, but it’s worth it though.

Read on to discover why.

WHY TAKE A FETHIYE-OLYMPOS BLUE CRUISE

I used to be scared of the sea .  One of my first memories is of being on a ferry aged 3, afraid to go anywhere near the guardrail. My mind boggled at how anyone could think boats were safe.

A gulet cruise in Turkey converted me.

It was an ex’s idea. We were in Fethiye , heading for Olympos on the Turquoise Coast on the south-west of the country. A backpacker’s haven with treehouses and beach-side ruins, it has drawn hippy types for decades.

The scenic coastal route to Olympos would take a few days and a few buses. But in Fethiye, we discovered that a 3-night cabin charter on gulet cruise could take us along the same route.

This stretch of coastline isn’t the easiest to explore by road. Many of the villages and bays along this coast were inaccessible to road traffic until the 1970s and, despite the new highways, there are still many parts that are difficult to access by car or public transport.

What better than to drift lazily between them on a boat?

A cabin charter is where you rent a room on a boat with other travellers (I use the word ‘room’ loosely). Once I learned the price, I was sold. With food and accommodation costs factored in, it wasn’t much more expensive than making our own way there.

Any fears I had of water were quickly dispelled once I strapped on a snorkel mask and jumped into those crystal clear turquoise seas. The food was as good as a restaurant, but with a much better view.

It wasn’t long before I was a convert to travelling by boat.

WHAT IS A BLUE CRUISE?

Gulet sailing in Turkey refers to a type of  sailing charter in this southwestern corner of Turkey, typically week-long liveaboard trips along the stretch of coast from Bodrum to Antalya with an emphasis on enjoying the nature as much as the sights and towns.

Gulet cruises in Turkey are also commonly referred to as a ‘ blue cruise ‘ or ‘ blue voyage ‘. Same thing.

The gulet cruise industry is popularly credited to Cevat Sakir – the Fisherman of Halicarnassus  – a writer who was exiled to Bodrum in 1925.

He fell in love with the simplicity of life and beauty of the area, often taking his literary friends out on sponge-diving boats when they visited. Several books were published about these trips, and before long fishing boats had been converted for the tourists seeking the same experience.

WHAT IS A GULET?

A gulet is a type of traditional Turkish wooden motor sailing vessel, originally used for fishing and sponging. If you’re wondering how to say ‘gulet’, it’s pronounced more like ‘goo-let’ than ‘gull-et’.

Although gulets do have sails, you can expect to motor cruise most of the time. Since gulets became popular for charters, adaptations have been made to the design to make it more comfortable for living aboard but less suitable for sailing. They have roomy decks with plenty of space for al fresco dining and sunbathing, and are wide and stable vessels.

The downside of motor cruising is the engine noise. And if you’re looking to learn how to sail, this is not the trip for you.

But if you want to experience life at sea for a few days and explore the coast by boat then gulet sailing in Turkey is great fun and great value. Turkey isn’t the only place in the Mediterranean you can gulet cruise; similar vessels have cropped up in Croatia and Montenegro, but this stretch of coast is the spiritual home.

WHAT TO EXPECT ON A CABIN CHARTER

Most boats offering cabin charters have around 12 passengers and 3 crew, although some party boats cram on more than that. Your meals are provided on the boat and there’s ample room on deck for lounging around, sunbathing, playing cards. A bimini provides shade and protection from the sun. You’ll spend most nights at anchor, hanging out with your fellow passengers, although there are opportunities to link up with other boats if you feel like it (particularly at the infamous Pirate Bay disco). It’s a great way to travel for singles, although you find plenty of couples and friends on the cabin charters too.

The cabins on budget boats are tiny and unlikely to have (working) A/C, meaning it’s more comfortable to sleep on a mattress on deck. If privacy/air-conditioning/showers are more your style then check out more expensive voyages with higher spec boats.

Typical stops between Fethiye and Olympos include:

  • Butterfly Valley

Other hubs where you can start/finish a gulet cruise are:

  • Rhodes (for Greek islands)

The sunken ruins at Kevoka from a gulet

HOW MUCH DOES A GULET CRUISE COST?

So you think sailing’s just for the super-rich? That’s what I thought too. Having grown up inland with no particular interest or experience of watersports, I’d never given sailing a moment’s consideration. I assumed that it was out of my budget and didn’t see the appeal.

Until I tried it.

Cabin charters are the best way to try sailing on a budget

  • Cabin charters are shared trips where you rent a cabin rather than the whole boat
  • Itineraries tend to be fixed
  • It’s a great way to meet people if you’re travelling solo
  • Worried about sharing a small space with strangers? Gulets are spacious compared to standard cruising yachts

What’s a typical price for a gulet cruise?

The cheapest rates I’ve seen online for 2018 are around the  € 200 mark for the 4-day Fethiye-Olympos route, which tends to be the cheapest option. The higher the price, the better the facilities on the boat. 7-day itineraries start at around €3 00 .

When comparing operators it’s wise to check what’s included. Some allow you to bring your own booze, which can make a difference to your budget if you’re bringing the party spirit. Otherwise alcoholic drinks are sold on board.

Kaş and Kalekoy from the water

BOOKING A CABIN CHARTER ON A GULET

If you’re travelling in peak season (July/August) you should consider booking in advance in order to secure the itinerary/boat that you’re after. That said, there is plenty of competition so it’s not strictly necessary.

The benefits of booking when you’re already in Turkey are that you’ll be able to compare operators, get a sense of the other passengers and crew, and potentially negotiate a lower price—particularly in shoulder season or if you’re travelling solo and hope to avoid paying the dreaded single supplement.

Some people like to party more than others, so talk to the operators to find the boat that’s the right fit for you. Find out who else has booked, make sure you know what’s included in the cost, and don’t forget to check out online reviews.

Things to bear in mind:

  • You will be sharing a small space and basic facilities with strangers
  • Expect to sleep on deck under the stars, it’s too hot in the cabins unless you’re splurging on a luxury boat with A/C
  • Hangovers at sea are an awful thing

Speaking of hangovers . . .

How to avoid a party boat, if that’s not your scene:

  • The cheaper the voyage, the more likely it will be full of party animals who have lined the freezer with booze
  • Particularly so in the university holidays – July/August
  • Fethiye-Olympos (and the reverse) tends to be the cheapest route and most popular with backpackers and young travellers
  • Check the ages of other passengers when booking

Olympos beach

I loved the gulet cruise experience so much that I brought a group of friends back the following year.

It wasn’t my last sailing experience either, since then I’ve gone on to sail on a tall ship around the Balearics , crewed on a classic yacht, and been a volunteer crew member on the Phoenician Ship Expedition around Africa.

  • Cost-Effective: Shared cruises are generally more budget-friendly as the cost is divided among all passengers.
  • Social Experience: You’ll have the opportunity to meet and interact with new people from around the world.
  • Fixed Itinerary: Shared cruises typically have a set itinerary, which might not be customizable to your preferences.

Private Gulet Charter

  • Personalized Experience: A private charter allows you to tailor the itinerary to your preferences and explore the destinations that interest you the most.
  • Exclusive Comfort: You’ll have the entire gulet to yourself, ensuring privacy and personalized service.
  • Flexible Schedule: With a private charter, you have the flexibility to set your own schedule and pace for the cruise.

Ultimately, the choice between a shared or private gulet cruise depends on your preferences, budget, and the type of experience you’re seeking.

Ultimate guide to a gulet sailing experience

gulet-sailing-experience

Gulets are classic handmade wooden yachts very unique to Turkey and are mainly built in Bodrum and Marmaris on the southwestern coast of the country. They are traditionally two-masted or three-masted vessels about 20 to 30 metres long.

Gulets

What can I expect from a gulet sailing experience?

A gulet sailing experience is nothing short of idyllic. The Mediterranean coastline in Turkey is beautiful with numerous islands dotted off-shore just waiting to be explored.

Each gulet cruise will have multiple breaks in different scenic bays, small fishing villages, with lots of stops for swimming and snorkelling. You can also bathe in hot springs, see some ancient temples and churches, and enjoy great Turkish and Greek food on the islands.

Gulet

Will we sail all day?

At night we find a beautiful bay or seaside village to moor up in, with other gulets as your neighbours. In good weather conditions, you sail around three to four hours per day. The captain may sail a bit longer to make up time if the weather didn't permit more sailing the day before.

seaside village

What can I do on board the gulet?

During your time on board and sailing you do little bits of nothing and truly have a holiday. Swimming, tanning and laying around on the deck relaxing, together with hearty meals are the things to look forward to.

The crew also keep basic snorkelling equipment on board for anyone wishing to spot some sea life during one of the many stops.

Inside the Gulet

What facilities can I expect on board the gulet?

Although the gulets can look similar from the exterior, internally some are extremely luxurious whilst others are more basic.

Traditionally Gulets were purely sail-powered, but these days also have diesel engines to help them along if the wind is still.

All gulets feature comfortable below deck cabins, the vast majority with en-suite bathrooms (toilet, basin, shower), a spacious indoor common area also known as the saloon, and a large deck that is decorated with cushions.

Gulets have between two and ten cabins, depending on the size of the vessel.

The gulets we like to use most have set departure dates that anyone can join and have six en-suite cabins, carrying up to 12 people in total.

Gulet

When is the best time to go on a gulet sailing experience?

The peak season for gulet sailing is from July to August, with the shoulder seasons of June and September also popular and a little cheaper. On some routes, the boats operate into May and October.

Our shared boat itineraries from Marmaris to Fethiye are four days, from Bodrum to Gokova and back to Bodrum eight days, and our tours from Marmaris to Fethiye and back to Marmaris are also eight days long.

Some of these tours take in several Greek islands along the way. All of these start and endpoints are easily accessible by domestic flights from Istanbul and many low-cost airlines also fly directly into Bodrum and Dalaman (which serves both Fethiye, around 45 minutes away and Marmaris, which is just under a two-hour drive).

We can arrange transfers to and from the airport and the start/finish of your gulet cruise on request.

Lunch on the Gulet

How big is the crew on a gulet?

Your crew is made up of a captain, a chef and three to four helpers depending on the size of the vessel.

Gulet crew

What meals can I expect on a gulet sailing experience?

You are served three main meals per day as well as a tea time refreshment. All meals are served on deck.

Breakfasts are typical Turkish spreads such as olives, cheeses, fruits, bread, pickles and yoghurts.

Lunches are light yet hearty and include items such as pasta, salads, rice and stews.

Dinners are feasts in the form of barbeques whether meat, chicken or fish, served with salads and sides. On the gulets, we enjoy the meals around one large table and everyone on board eats together, which is an essential part of Turkish life.

After dinner, the guests turn in for the night. Despite having their own private cabin, many people prefer to sleep on the deck as the summer nights are warm and tranquil and its a great pleasure to sleep under the stars while hearing the soft sounds of the waves lapping ashore or against the boat.

Overall, gulet cruises are one of Turkey's tourism highlights and one of the country's great holiday experiences. They can be enjoyed on their own as a short holiday, or easily added onto a longer stay in the country, perhaps as an extension onto one of our other Turkey tours.

A Guide to Gulet Sailing Holidays in Turkey

I am incredibly grateful for countless travel memories that I can look back on with fondness but one of my favourite is gulet cruising in Turkey. It was a four night, five-day sailing holiday along the Mediterranean coast from Fethiye to Olympus. Choosing to partly detox from an Internet addiction, and relax at the same time, the experience was ten times better than any spa retreat offers.

However, speaking to friends after the event, it seemed that the biggest misconception people have about gulet sailing holidays in Turkey, is that you’ll spend all day, every day on the boat being bored, but it is about much more than that. Firstly, if you are a novice to gulet cruising, it helps to understand the unique background, concept and what makes them different from others sailing vessels.

Gulet sailing

What is a Gulet in Turkey?

When you book gulet sailing holidays in Turkey, you are venturing into an age-old nautical tradition. Gulets are traditional, handcrafted wooden boats with two or three masts. Although other countries such as Italy, Montenegro, and Croatia, use gulets, Turkey has an esteemed and long-established reputation for making gulet boats, especially in Bodrum and Bozburun, two coastal hubs on the west and southwest coast.

Their original use was for sponge diving and fishing, but over the years, the concept has evolved to become overnight floating hotels. Esteemed professionals expertly handcraft each gulet boat with unique design and décor. You can find more information about gulet boats here .

eating on a gulet boat

Are Gulets Seaworthy?

Yes, these boats are extremely hardy, and every year during winter, the owners dock into the shipyards for maintenance and upkeep. Gulets are a specialised vessel, and different from a yacht. The latest materials and techniques are used in yacht construction. Hence the industry is always evolving because the primary purpose is sailing long distances, even around the world. Whereas short, coastal cruising is what gulet boats are designed for.

Gulet Cruising in Turkey

What are Blue Cruises in a Gulet Boat?

Gulet sailing holidays in Turkey focus on the Aegean and Mediterranean coasts, which make up the Turkish Riviera. Within this long stretch of coastline, captains follow defined Blue Cruise routes, with unique attractions and things to do. The Fethiye to Olympus way is one of the most popular, but passengers can also sail to the Greek Islands and back, as another alternative.

Budget travellers can book cabin charter on set Blue Cruise routes of which there are many, or large groups and families can book their private gulet sailing holiday and along with the captain, tailor-make a particular blue cruise route. Are you wandering if blue cruises are appropriate for you or not? Here is what a gulet expert says: https://www.guletexpert.com/what-is-blue-cruise/

Inside a gulet boat

What is it Like Staying on a Gulet Boat?

Most gulet boats range in size from 20 to 30 meters, and each has between 5 to 8 cabins. Within these cabins are double or single beds, an en-suite bathroom and sometimes wardrobes. Most gulets have air conditioning, although the humidity is less at sea than at land, so they are generally not needed, especially when sailing.

Eat your meals on deck, and there is a full crew to help you including the captain, deckhands, and cook. Gulet boats can cruise with wind force or turn on the engine for a faster experience. As with any travel concept, a gulet can be budget and basic or luxurious, in which case, the cabins are larger with exquisite furniture and décor. The sunbathing area is at the front of the boat and inside is a separate seating/bar area.

Places in Turkey to Book Gulet Sailing Holidays

Life on the Turkish Riviera focuses on seaside living, but some places have esteemed reputations for their excellence in the gulet sailing industry. Daily many gulet boats sail out of the harbours in these regions to take passengers on a 3 to 8-day cruise. They include….

Bodrum: The town, a favoured holiday destination for British people as well as Turks, has spearheaded Turkey’s tourism drive ever since the 1980s. As well as selling budget holidays, it also offers luxurious experiences leading it to become a favourite destination for rich and wealthy celebrities.

Marmaris: Another destination particularly favoured by the Brits, the harbour and marina area is a hive of everything nautical. Within the town itself, there is not much to do the area, however, is exceptionally scenic, explaining why it is a major sailing hub.

Fethiye: Round the world backpackers completing a tour of Turkey, book up for budget cabin charter Blue cruise routes to Olympus from Fethiye, although the town also offers luxury sailing at a higher cost.

Things to Do on Gulet Sailing Holidays in Turkey

Fethiye Turkey

As mentioned before, although the term “sailing holidays” imply, it is all about being at sea, gulet cruising is about a lot more than that, namely the diversity of things to do.

1: Explore the small coastal towns

The Turkish Riviera has many small, coastal towns, each with their characteristics. Gulets dock in either overnight or for the day, giving you time to wander and explore. Kas on the Mediterranean coast is a perfect example because despite embracing modern living, it has kept its authentic atmosphere, making it one of the quaintest places in Turkey.

2: Get to places only accessible by boat

Many uninhabited islands surround Turkey, and some of them such as Gemiler just outside Fethiye are worth exploring. Ruined Christian churches and a fantastic view make it a preferred place at night for boats to drop anchor. Kekova sunken ruins is another area ideally explored by boat for the best view.

3: Sleep on deck

During my blue cruise, I never slept in my cabin. Instead preferring the deck at the front of the boat, I thoroughly enjoyed going to sleep under the stars. There is something peaceful about just listening to the sounds of nature as you drop off and as much as my cabin was comfortable and quiet, I choose to sleep on deck every time.

4: See Caretta Caretta turtles

It is a guaranteed certainty you will see the endangered Caretta turtles if you cruise the Mediterranean coast but in particular, the Simena area. One morning, a small group came swimming around the boat for food and seeing their size, I realised their stamina was strong despite their docile appearance.

5: Gorgeous sunsets

Watching a Turkish sunset dip over the horizon is a favourite evening activity of mine because I am not talking about average sunsets here. The Mediterranean and Aegean coasts, boast of vibrant orange sunsets that are big attractions for tourists, who cannot resist getting their camera out to snap the view.

Gulet Blue Cruises

6: Catch your dinner

Of course, if you do not like fish or seafood, the cook will whip up many alternative dishes, but for fish lovers, part of the thrill is catching your dinner and BBQing it. From sea to plate within 20 minutes. You cannot get any fresher than that!

7: Snorkelling and diving

Most gulet boats have snorkelling equipment on board, which you are welcome to use when they stop for swimming breaks. Alternatively, Turkey is a scuba diving paradise with many underwater wrecks and various sea life. If you spend half a day in any scuba diving town, your boat captain can pre-book lessons for you, whether you are a novice or experienced.

8: Ice-cream deliveries!

In many spots around the coastline where boats dock in for swimming or overnight breaks, floating ice-cream boats offer the perfect refreshment. Pulling alongside the gulet and coming on board with many choices, it is a quirky concept of waiter service.

9: Jet-skis and parasailing

Likewise, anywhere boats gather, jet skis are for hire and passengers can parasail behind a speed boat. Jet skiing attracts adrenaline junkies while paragliding is an alternative bird’s eye view of the gorgeous landscape.

10: Visit historical ruins of ancient civilizations

Many Blue Cruise routes on the Aegean and Mediterranean coasts, stop by coastal historical ruins of which Turkey has hundreds. The Med coast was home to the Lycians, who left behind glorious cities such as Patara and Olympus, set in an overgrown forest. Their ancient cities have also sparked an official trekking route, one of the longest in the world taking as much as three months to complete.

11: See the Greek Dodecanese Islands

Although, the most popular routes of gulet sailing holidays in Turkey focus on the Turkish Riviera, mix your holiday with Greek destinations of which, the Dodecanese islands are perfect. 150 of them sit in the south Aegean Sea, just a short distance from Turkey. The two most famous are Kos, and Rhodes, however smaller islands like Simi, are ideal for getting off the beaten track.

Turkey DISPATCH

A Stork, a Fisherman and Their Unlikely Bond Enchant Turkey

Thirteen years ago, a stork landed on a fisherman’s boat looking for food. He has come back every year since, drawing national attention.

Thirteen years ago, a poor fisherman in a small Turkish village was retrieving his net from a lake when he heard a noise behind him and turned to find a majestic being standing on the bow of his rowboat.

Gleaming white feathers covered its head, neck and chest, yielding to black plumes on its wings. It stood atop skinny orange legs that nearly matched the color of its long, pointy beak.

The fisherman, Adem Yilmaz, recognized it as one of the white storks that had long summered in the village, he recalled, but he had never seen one so close, much less hosted one on his boat.

Wondering if it was hungry, he tossed it a fish, which the bird devoured. He tossed another. And another.

So began an unlikely tale of man and bird that has captivated Turkey as the passing years — and a deft social media campaign by a local nature photographer — have spread the pair’s story as a modern-day fable of cross-species friendship.

The stork, nicknamed Yaren, or “companion,” in Turkish, not only returned to Mr. Yilmaz’s boat repeatedly that first year, the fisherman said, but after migrating south for the winter, returned the next spring to the same village, the same nest — and the same boat.

Last month, after Yaren appeared in the village for the 13th year in a row, the local news media gleefully covered his arrival like the springtime sighting of a Turkish Punxsutawney Phil .

People posing in front of a larger-than-life statue of a man standing on a boat, his metal arm reaching out to a metal stork.

The pair’s story has brought unexpected fame, although no serious fortune, to Mr. Yilmaz, 70, and Yaren, estimated to be 17. They have co-starred in a children’s book and an award-winning documentary . A children’s adventure movie featuring a cameo by Mr. Yilmaz (and a digital rendering of the stork) is expected to debut in cinemas across Turkey this year.

Stork lovers everywhere can watch Yaren and his partner, Nazli, or “coquette” in Turkish, as they preen, contort their necks, clack their beaks, renovate their nest and occasionally mate, thanks to a 24-hour webcam set up by the local government.

“This is not a tale. This is a true story,” Ali Ozkan, the mayor of Karacabey, whose district includes the village, said in an interview. “It is a true story with the flavor of a tale.”

The bird’s celebrity has bolstered municipal efforts to increase local tourism with walking paths and coffee shops near the district’s lakes and wetlands, he said. The area has developed a stork “master plan” to care for the birds.

He initially faced some criticism from constituents who wondered why a mayor was getting involved with storks, he said. But now, residents call in when they notice damaged nests, and a friend from another city recently phoned him to complain that he could not see Yaren on the webcam.

The story has put Mr. Yilmaz’s village of Eskikaraagac — population 235 — on the map, drawing groups of students and tourists who stroll its narrow streets to see the storks and take boat rides on neighboring Lake Uluabat. Many visitors seek out Yaren’s nest, which sits on a platform atop an electric pole near Mr. Yilmaz’s house, and act star-struck when they encounter the fisherman himself, peppering him with questions and posing for photographs.

One recent morning, Mr. Yilmaz stood in the yard of his small, two-story house holding a tub of fish he had caught. In their nest overhead, Yaren and Nazli dozed, groomed themselves and filled the air with the percussive clacking of their beaks.

“Yaren!” Mr. Yilmaz called.

Both birds glided down to the yard, and Mr. Yilmaz lofted fish into their beaks.

“They are full,” Mr. Yilmaz announced after the birds had downed about two dozen fish. “After 13 years, I can tell.”

Storks have long nested in the village, arriving in the spring and mating before migrating in the late summer toward Africa.

Village elders recall when there seemed to be a stork nest on every roof and residents struggled to prevent the birds from swiping laundry from outdoor lines. But most people liked the birds, whose arrival right after pink flowers bloomed on the almond trees was a harbinger of spring.

Ridvan Cetin, the village’s elected authority, said a count in the 1980s found 41 active nests, meaning 82 storks, not including chicks.

This year, the village has only four active nests, including Yaren’s.

“Now they are very few,” Mr. Cetin said sadly.

No one in the village could recall a bond similar to that between Mr. Yilmaz and Yaren.

“I’ve never seen anything like it,” Mr. Cetin said.

For Mr. Yilmaz, a quiet man with leathery hands and a kind, rutted face, Yaren was a serendipitous addition to what he had hoped would be a late, restful chapter in an otherwise difficult life.

He grew up poor. His father pulled him out of school to work in the fields and fish, no matter how cold the weather.

“My life was between the field and the lake,” he said.

His mother died when he was 13. His father remarried when he was 17 to a woman Mr. Yilmaz did not like. So, with only an elementary school education, he fled to Bursa, the nearest big city, and worked in a factory that made yogurt and other milk products.

At 19, he married another villager he had known since childhood. They lost their first child, a daughter, weeks after her birth. He worked in different milk factories as he and his wife raised three other children, two boys and a girl.

In 2011, with his children grown and living elsewhere with his five grandchildren, he stopped working, returned to the village and moved back into his childhood home, next to the lake where he had fished as a child.

“It was my dream from the day I started working to go to my village and fish,” he said.

Soon after, the stork landed on his boat.

Each time Yaren left, Mr. Yilmaz wondered whether he would return. But after a few years, he stopped worrying.

“I was sure that as long as I was alive, this bird was going to return,” he said.

Early on, no one much cared that Mr. Yilmaz had made friends with a stork. Other villagers teased him or said he was wasting his time — and his fish.

That changed in year five, when Alper Tuydes, a hunter turned wildlife photographer who works for the local government, began sharing photographs of the pair on social media. The story spread, getting a lift each spring with Yaren’s arrival.

The relationship of man and bird corresponds with known stork behaviors, said Omer Donduren, a Turkish ornithologist.

Although storks avoid direct contact with people, they often roost near them, on roofs, in chimneys or atop electricity poles.

The birds tend toward monogamy and display loyalty to their nests, parting ways with their partners to migrate, but rendezvousing in the same nest in the spring to reproduce.

That could explain why Yaren has roosted near Mr. Yilmaz’s house year after year, Mr. Donduren said.

Storks, which can live for more than 20 years in the wild and more than 30 in captivity, also have strong memories, enabling them to remember migration routes from as far north as Poland and Germany to destinations many thousands of miles south, as far as South Africa. It is unclear where Yaren spends his time after he leaves the village, but a tracker affixed to one of his offspring followed the bird over Syria, Jordan, Israel, Egypt, Sudan, Chad and the Central African Republic before it stopped working.

Over time, Yaren’s experiences with Mr. Yilmaz have probably become part of his memory, he said.

“Nature doesn’t have much space for emotions,” Mr. Donduren said. “For the stork, it is a matter of easy food. It thinks, There is an easy source of food here. This man seems safe. He doesn’t hurt me.”

Mr. Yilmaz’s explanation is much simpler.

“It is just to love an animal,” he said. “They are God’s creatures.”

One recent morning, Mr. Yilmaz rowed into the lake and pulled up his net, dropping small fish into the boat.

“Yaren!” he called.

The stork took flight, did a loop to surveil the boat and perched on a lamppost near the bank.

“Yaren!” Mr. Yilmaz called again.

The bird took flight again, finally alighting on the boat, where Mr. Yilmaz tossed him fish after fish.

After a while, the stork lifted off, glided around the village and returned to his nest.

“That’s it,” Mr. Yilmaz said with a satisfied smile. “He is full.”
