T he X One Design is a beautiful, classic, wooden racing keelboat first raced in 1911 and still going strong today,  providing very competitive racing and giving great pleasure to those who sail them.

Every boat has a history and a story, each XOD is beautifully maintained; we are just custodians of these magnificent boats.

The XOD class at Itchenor Sailing Club runs over 140 competitive races during the season, on weekends as well as Wednesday evenings; where we have a fun race and a meal together afterwards.

Here at Itchenor we are one of six clubs around the Solent sailing XOD's and there is the opportunity to race with all 140 boats.

History made in XODs

John Tremlett of Haines Boatyard in Chichester Harbour became XOD champion for a record fifth time after winning the class’ annual Captain’s Cup at Cowes Week. The X-One Design fleet is one of the most competitive and numerous in the country. Tremlett (left) sailed his boat Lass with crew Ian Andrew, Richard Bullock, Alastair Shaw and David McGregor over the week to post four firsts, a second and a seventh, discarding an 18th for a total of just 13 points overall, well ahead of Simon Russell’s second-placed X166 Swallow with 26 and Paul Woodman’s X32 Ibex (third), with 38.

The Captain’s Cup was presented at the annual XOD class prize-giving in November. Class Captain James Meaning said: “John Tremlett and team have taken the XOD class by storm in the last five years with their uncanny ability to navigate the Solent’s notoriously fickle tides and varying sea states. John always seems to be at full speed when the starting gun goes. Very few helms have his ability to recover from a bad situation and still finish in front. Winning for the fifth consecutive year is an achievement unprecedented in the 106-year history of the class.”

Tremlett also took a win with Rob Adams at the Salcombe YC regatta in August, finishing 14th overall, despite racing only four of the six races. Sailing an elderly Finn, he was again in the mix at Bosham SC Classic Boat Revival in September, finishing eighth overall after several podium places.

X One Design

The X One Design (XOD) was designed in 1907 with the first boat launched in 1909. It is 21-foot ¾ decked keelboat of carvel construction. A very strong boat, several launched in 1911 are still racing today. The design has proved itself over the years allowing sailors of all ages, from teenagers to octogenarians to race with equal success. Gradually, over the years, modernisation has been approved with the biggest changes being Gaff to Bermuda rig and more recently the use of Epoxy being permitted. This has resulted in many of the earlier boats being rejuvenated, enabling them to match newer boats, not only for speed but also finish. With numbers nearing 200, and all the boats based between Poole and Itchenor, it is the strongest South Coast One Design class.

The cost of ownership is not high and, with epoxy coated hulls, maintenance can be minimal or as much as you like to spend. X's have always outlived their owners, unlike many modern racing yachts which in less than 10 years lose their competitiveness, mainly due to their light construction. The Class Association have published a new document "The X Factor" - click here for the electronic version.

Royal Lymington Yacht Club XOD Fleet

The Lymington XOD Fleet sails under the burgee of the Royal Lymington Yacht Club. The Harbour Authorities have established heritage moorings for the class on the East side of the river, an impressive sight for all.  The racing is superb for all from gentle family sailors to Olympic hotshots.

The XOD is the largest keelboat racing fleet at the Royal Lymington Yacht Club with over 40 active boats. Racing is very competitive throughout the fleet. Our successful sailors are always willing to help those new to the class and those at the back of the fleet to find more speed. An XOD responds to finetuning and this tests everyone from time to time, even successful owners have days of "go slows".

Tea is organised after both Saturday and Wednesday afternoon racing where competitors and race officers get together in a friendly atmosphere.

Join our regular racing at Royal Lymington Yacht Club

The Royal Lymington Yacht Club has a full fixture list with racing for all every week. Boats from Yarmouth regularly join us to swell the number of boats coming to the start line. XODs race in our Spencers New Forest Thursday Evening Racing Series ; this is a very popular series and gives us all a chance of winding down with a good social get-together after the race. Find key dates in our Calendar or download printable 2023 XOD series calendar here .

Join the Lymington XOD Fleet!

The XOD fleet is keen to welcome new members of any age. Sharing is very successful and ensures better usage. Dinghy sailors thinking of moving on to a keel boat and still looking for competitive family sailing at a reasonable cost should try an XOD.  If you would like to crew, please e-mail either Shaun Norris or Chris Hawes via the Club Office and provide details of your sailing experience and availability. They will either be able to introduce you straight away to a helm looking for crew or will keep your details and match them to any request they may receive later in the season to fill a vacancy.

The XOD's are beautiful 20ft classic wooden keel boats, many painted and some varnished. They sail two or three up from the end of March to the end of October in over 100 races a year using the whole of Chichester Harbour and sometimes the Solent.

The X fleet at Itchenor is one of six Solent clubs that race X's, culminating, if one wants, in racing at Cowes Week and Cowes Classic Week and lots of Solent racing in-between.

We are a very competitive fleet with the winner of Cowes for the last seven years coming from Itchenor!

There are 40 X boats at Itchenor (not all on the water at the same time) and we all race together, giving everyone the impetus to improve. Within the group are three fleets of different standards and success in each is recognised with one of 40 different cups and prizes.

Every Wednesday we sail a fun race in the harbour by ourselves, which is often the highlight of the week, in a beautiful empty harbour, with the setting sun and a glass or two in the bar with dinner afterwards, it's a great way to get to know us and join in the fun.

You can join us - we're very friendly - by being a boat tart (someone who crews on lots of different boats). It's a way of getting to know who we all are, whether you like us, and who you want to race with. Email Gill for more information.

Many boats encourage partnerships where maintenance costs are divided which keeps down the cost of owning an XOD. If you want to helm, this is a good way to get hold of the tiller and have great sailing, learn the tides and shallows of the fast moving water with a regular team as Chichester Harbour can be more challenging than the Solent. The XOD truly is the queen of racing.

If you want, we can arrange training by an XOD sailor or RYA instructor to help you get the best out of an X.

We have lots of news, race results, trophies and lots more information on our XOD website
