Five of the Top Power Catamarans

Somehow, the anglers knew. When power ­catamarans first started working their way into the mainstream a few decades ago, offshore fishermen were among the first adopters. They didn’t mind the different look because they knew what they were gaining in the stability and seakeeping that a twin-hull boat could provide. Soon the long-distance cruisers took to them too, as the secret got out that they could take to waters in smaller boats normally reserved for the biggest and burliest of V-hulls. Now? Cats are part of the big-boat circuit as well, with 35- to 50-footers seen roaming the canyons and cruising hotspots. If you like to roam outside the inlet, here are five of the biggest cats that get the job done.

Invincible 46 Pilothouse 

The Pilothouse version of the Invincible 46 allows you to overnight in style and comfort, or enjoy weather protection en route to the fish, and the 1,000-gallon fuel capacity gives the boat incredible range. When we tested this boat with quad Mercury Racing 450s, we recorded a range of 593.9 miles while cruising at 40.7 mph at 4,000 rpm. Top speed, if you’re wondering, was 71.2 mph. But this angling platform is about so much more than just the performance numbers.

The Invincible 46 rides on a hybrid-­asymmetrical hull that combines the best of a proa cat’s efficiency with the wave slicing and ­stability of identical twin sponsons. The hulls are double-stepped to further improve efficiency and running attitude. This cat can handle heavy seas and provide comfort offshore on days when less-worthy boats are still in their slips.

The pilothouse allows the captain and crew to experience the ride in plush comfort. In addition to the helm seating and the aft U-shaped lounge, there is an aft row of captain’s chairs. However, you can delete the second-row seating and ­extend the lounge for a roomier feel. If you want some fresh air, the pilothouse opens up nicely with port and starboard sliding doors, helm and passenger sliding windows, and a power-sliding window on the aft bulkhead that opens the cockpit to the cabin. Belowdecks, there’s sleeping accommodations for four, plus a galley that can be custom-fitted to your needs.

Even with the pilothouse, Invincible bills this boat as having 360-degree fishability. There’s plenty of fish-fighting space in the cockpit and the bow, which can convert to a three-person sun pad when the lines are in. Bring all the bait you want with the dual 60-gallon transom livewells, along with the 70-gallon in-floor well. All are fed by a sea chest with six pumps to keep the bait fresh. A rigging station folds out of the mezzanine seatback so cleverly that we might have missed it in our initial inspection if it hadn’t been pointed out. Drawers and tackle-box slots keep gear, tools, and leader spools organized. Six shotgun rod holders on the transom will prove ideal for storage and rigging. There’s lockable rod storage under the gunwales too. The transom arrangement eschews a transom door, but Invincible has an inward-opening portside door for hauling fish to the deck.

Overall, the Invincible 46 Pilothouse is set up to be a badass long-distance fishing and cruising machine.

Four Winns TH36 

With an aggressively wide 14-foot-7-inch beam, the Four Winns TH36 packs a ton of creature comforts into this catamaran to exceed the needs of the typical dayboater. Start with the aft living room—er—cockpit, which rivals the setup of many backyard patios. The seating is genius; the cockpit lounges slide and lock in several positions, both with and without tables. Slide them outboard, and two L-lounges reside on each side of a central walkway. Slide them inboard, and you create a giant U-shaped lounge. At the cockpit’s forward end, large plush, upholstered double chaises face aft. It’s all one level from here, right up to the bow lounge. Amidships, a pair of counters to port and starboard house the galley. Lift the faux-stone lids to reveal a cooktop, sink and optional grill, with a fridge hiding underneath. The massive bow lounge provides even more social space for up to eight people.

The dual-console layout evokes the feel of a bowrider on steroids. The helm provides excellent visibility from the adjustable captain’s chair, from where the captain can observe twin MFDs mounted in a pod that extends from the top of the console without restricting the view beyond. We tested this boat with a pair of Mercury 350 Verados, achieving a top speed of 37.1 mph and a nice cruising speed of around 25 mph. With the twin hulls, we found the boat to be as smooth as silk while knifing through swells that might cause a similar-size V-hull to pound.

While designed primarily for ­daytime roaming, the TH36 is set up to also be an ­overnight cruiser. Two cabins with queen berths reside belowdecks, each with its own separate head and shower. So you and your guests, or a family of four, can enjoy some ­privacy when it’s time to draw the curtains.

The extended platform between the ­outboards proved to be a favorite feature. It’s a great spot for taking a dip at anchor when the engines are off, but it also makes for a great boarding spot, showing that the TH36’s comfort factor starts before you even leave the dock.

World Cat 400 CC-X 

An OG in the power-cat space, World Cat has been producing center- and dual-console fishing catamarans for decades. Coming out on the heels of its 40-foot dual-console, the 400 CC-X is the flagship of its center-console fleet.

With a 604-gallon fuel tank, the 400 CC-X can deliver a range of over 600 miles, as proved during test day when, powered by quadruple Yamaha F300s, we recorded a range of 611.6 miles at a 27.5 mph clip at 4,000 rpm. You can get to the blue water and back, or the Bahamas if you live in Florida, and still have fuel to fish along the way.

Because of its long length and wide beam, the 400 CC-X can fit three high-back seats with armrests at the helm. The captain’s place would be at the center seat, which adjusts electrically behind the brushed-aluminum Edson wheel with brodie knob. The three-­sided tempered-glass windshield provides wind and spray protection, while an electric opening vent at the top of the windscreen allows a breeze on hot days. Our test boat sported two 22-inch Garmin touchscreens—a trio of ­17-inch displays is also offered—that showed everything, from systems (lighting, pumps, etc.) to the engine readouts. The 400 CC-X comes with a key-fob control, so you can turn on the lights and systems while walking on the dock. Some thoughtful touches at the helm include a padded recess atop the dash to securely hold phones and glasses, plus a handy glove box with a drain.

In terms of fishy features, the 400 CC-X is stacked, with an inward-opening tuna door leading into the 200-square-foot cockpit, with padded coamings and nearly 30 inches of walk-around space past the console and T-top to chase fish. In the cockpit sole are a pair of 80-gallon insulated fish boxes (with overboard Grouper Gulper pumps) that can be optioned as bait tanks; another pair of 154-gallon fish boxes (5-by-2 feet) are forward. Up at the bow, there’s actually a casting platform that hides the Lewmar anchor windlass. Our tester boasted the optional Cat Track sliding seats forward, which can combine into a centerline coffin box, creating a sun pad, or separate into a U-lounge. So there’s definitely room to relax and chill. Rod capacity? There are four vertical holders on each side of the console, three rod racks on each side of the cockpit aft, six lockable racks forward, an ­additional six locking racks under each ­gunwale, plus six rocket launchers on the ­T-top—five behind the helm and 11 scattered around the bow. Bring your entire arsenal.

The largest of the cats in this roundup, the ­ Aquila 47 Molokai can take on square-edged seas with aplomb. When we tested it with four Mercury 400 Verados on the transom, we pointed the bow through the inlet and took on some serious swells with nary a shudder. It can run far, fish hard, and cruise in comfort—all in one finely appointed package.

Aquila’s heritage stems from the ­cruising side, so we’ll start with all the amenities ­designed to keep you in comfort between ­marina runs. Tucked into the low-profile console is a fully outfitted air-conditioned cabin with a queen berth; 6 feet, 7 inches of headroom; big windows; overhead skylights; and a surprisingly spacious head with shower. The genset is powered by lithium batteries that provide eight hours of juice for cooling the cabin.

Abovedecks, the 47 Molokai is all ­fishing. There are 22 rod holders all around the gunwales, plus attached to the carbon-fiber hardtop and in piping along the hardtop stanchions. Twin 42.5-gallon livewells are built into the transom for your baits, and insulated 4-foot, 148-gallon macerating fish boxes hide under deck hatches along the console walkways.

Tucked under the carbon-fiber hardtop (reinforced for the optional Pipewelders tower) are seven Stidd seats: three up front behind the helm and four in the raised mezzanine to spectate the action. That helm is impeccable, from the eyebrowed black dash with twin (or triple) Garmin MFDs, C-Zone switching, custom Fusion audio, and Mercury joystick. Driving the 47 Molokai when equipped with 1,600 hp is an absolute blast. The double-stepped hulls keep the boat at a good attitude while running along at a crisp pace. We recorded a top speed of 66.5 mph with the throttles pinned, while still maintaining a range of 562 miles. Throttle back to a comfortable 48.1 mph cruising speed at 4,500 rpm, and the range jumps to 654 miles.

Overall, the Aquila 47 Molokai is a boat ­designed and built to go places.

Twin Vee 400 GFX2 

The new Twin Vee 400 GFX2 is the next generation of the builder’s GFX model , with many redesigned features and a new digital control system to make operation smooth and seamless.

As of press time, we haven’t been able to get on the Twin Vee 400 GFX2, the newest model in the lineup. But we will soon. Here’s what we know about the company’s flagship offering. This boat is designed to be an offshore fishing machine. It will feature more than 450 square feet of deck space, 2,500 quarts of insulated storage, 150-gallon livewell capacity, and plenty of space to fight and land fish.

Fishing-wise, the GFX will have twin 475-quart coffin boxes with stainless-steel inserts and two in-deck 700-quart fish boxes with macerators. There will also be four electric-­reel outlets if you’re looking to fish deep. For rod holders, there will be 10 mounted into the gunwales per side, plus eight more on the hardtop piping aft of the helm. The main cockpit will have a rear-facing tackle station to prep your arsenal. A starboard-side tuna door helps for landing large pelagics and doubles as a great spot for dockside ­boarding. The helm has triple captain’s chairs, with ­additional seating for three just aft. A fully enclosed windshield keeps the captain and crew protected from the elements. The dash has space to mount twin 22-inch MFDs. A freshwater head in the console and transom jump seats add to the creature comforts.

The 400 GFX2 can be powered by quad Mercury, Yamaha or Suzuki outboards up to 1,800 hp total. Depending on your power choice, cruising speed should be in the mid-40s, with top speeds in the high 60 mph range.

The story of the evolution of the power catamaran can be broken down to a simple act of marital duty. it was the 1940's and Ray Leger loved to fish off of the California coast with his wife Evelyn. Ray had been a carpenter and capitalized on the booming Southern California housing market after World War 2, later using his skills and equipment to construct fishing boats. Evelyn would routinely suffer from seasickness, a problem that Ray needed to solve in order to keep fishing. Knowing that a catamaran offered greater stability, Ray set out to build one with outboard motors. The first one, an 18-foot cabin cruiser, was outfitted with twin 33hp outboards. By the 1960's, construction had moved to fiberglass hulls and the popularity quickly soared.

Today, power catamarans are among the fastest growing segments in the marine industry, as are sailing catamarans . A recent report shows that the global catamaran market as a whole is worth over $4 billion and has an annual growth rate of over 6%. That's nearly double what the average CAGR (compound annual growth rate) is for the boating industry in total.

The transition to power cats really came from charter customers in the Caribbean that would vacation on sailing cats in the BVI's for weeks at a time. The catamarans offered greater stability, but also an incredible amount of space on board thanks to the wider beams. But people on vacation enjoying the trip would end up using the small engines most of the time as sailing comes with a certain amount of effort. Now it's common to see power catmarans in charter in the Caribbean, as well as privately owned boats behind someone's house.

As more boaters get exposed to the benefits of power catamarans, the number of builders has grown as well. Power cat brands like Aquila Boats , as an example, weren't around in the early 2000's, but are now a common boat to see all over Florida or the Northeast. Prestige Yachts also just released their very first power cat into the market, the M48. Trying to claim that one power catamaran builder is the "best" among all of the others is a tough decision as there are many factors. If judged by number of units sold over the last 10 years, then Leopard is the best power catamaran builder in the industry. Looking at boats sold globally in the MLS over the last decade, Leopard Catamarans sold 40% more vessels than the second leading power cat builder, Fountain Pajot . Other notable power cat brands that led in overall sales were Endeavor, Lagoon, and Aquila.

While the number of boats sold into the marketplace is a sign of strength in a builder, it also may not necessarily equate to 'being the best power catamaran' in terms of quality. Like with monohulls, there are varying degrees of both quality and price when it comes to the subsects of the power cat industry. Both Sunreef and Horizon Yachts have expanded into large luxury power cats that, even when more than 10 years old, can still command more than $2 million as an asking price.

One way to tell if the catamaran you're buying is well-recognized for its quality is to look at some of the recent award winners. Many of the editors of multi-hull focused magazines are experts in this category and have real-life experiences on dozens of different models. Here are a few notable ones:

• Fountaine Pajot MY4.S won the 2022 Multi-Hull of the Year Award for its category (36.1' and reaches 22 knots!)
• The Aquila 54 won 2021 Multi-hull of the Year 
• The Leopard 53 Power Cat won 2020 Multi-Hull of the Year
• The Lagoon 55 won the 2021 British Yachting Awards

Whether you're purchasing a new or pre-owned power catamaran, its resale value is of the utmost importance. Nothing can stifle your enthusiasm when you are trying to sell your existing yacht only to have it sit on the market for a long time while diminishing in value. If this is of concern to you, the best advice is to stick with the more mainstream, reputable catamaran builders. Boats with odd layouts, underpowered engines, outlandish decor, and other out-of-the-norm equipment can cause your boat to sit on the market longer than anticipated.

The market demand has also improved in recent years. Over the last decade, power catamarans took roughly 330 days to sell. Almost a full year! Since 2020, however, that amount of time has decreased by 19%. Among the builders that sold within 100 days of hitting the market, Aquila, Endeavor, Fountaine Pajot, Leopard, and Robertson & Caine were prominent.

Power catamarans have become so popular in recent years. Alex Smith talks us through 6 of the most exciting models we've covered in the past 12 months...

With the promise of extra volume stability and running efficiency it’s easy to see why power catamarans have become so popular in recent years.

Established players like Sunreef , Leopard and Lagoon have been joined by new builders like Vandal, Archipelago and Moon Yachts.

Big brands like Prestige have also made them move into twin hulled motorboats in recent years, and the likes of Bluegame and Wider Yachts look set to follow suit.

So with the trend showing no signs of slowing here’s our round-up of some of the most exciting new power catamarans you can buy right now.

Prestige M48

Prestige’s first ever power catamaran is designed to provide the volume of a 60 footer alongside the running efficiency of a 40 footer, but the way it manages all that onboard space is also quite attractive.

A three-part aft swim platform features a raising central section to help extend the cockpit party out over the water. The foredeck mimics that with freestanding furniture right at the forepeak and between them the saloon includes a big-aft galley, a large port lounge and a compact helm with a handy starboard side door.

From here private stairwells to the forward owner’s cabin and each of the two guest cabins provide plenty of privacy, and the split design of the port ensuite means it works really well as a day head.

In terms of styling the freestanding bow furniture looks a bit odd, and in terms of dynamics the stooping bridge deck does tend to touch down when the swells get beyond a couple of feet.

But if you want an accessible, novice-friendly boat that provides a party platform way out of proportion to its length, the first model in Prestige’s M line has a lot going for it. And if you have the budget, the more recent Prestige M8 is an even more convincing piece of work.

Moon Power 60

As a modified sailing cat, the Moon Power 60’s beam stands at a massive 53% of its overall length and that has a very clear impact on the inside.

In spite of huge side decks with dual access to the flybridge , the internal saloon occupies an enormous footprint. It’s used for a pair of peripheral seating areas plus a forward door to access a lovely sunken bow lounge.

Visibility from the lower helm is restricted by the big stuts that sit sailboat-style toward the centre of the screen, but performance is pretty impressive: a pair of 3,500L tanks give you a 2,000nm range at 8 knots with a fuel flow of just 3lpm, and if you really want to boost the range there’s plenty of space for extra fuel capacity too.

Up on the flybridge there’s a big symmetrical lounge and a hot tub flanked by sunbeds, and down below the two hulls borrow a bit of inboard space for four ensuite cabins.

The simplistic saloon arrangement, the absence of a day heads, and the sheer masculinity of that styling might prove a bit problematic for some, but if you’re okay with a modified sailing cat, and you’re happy to work with the yard to refine that deck layout, this big imposing long-distance boat is unlike anything else out there.

Invincible 33

Invincible is a well-respected American Builder with a strong offshore sports fishing heritage and close links with the US Navy, but it also builds high-performance power catamarans, and this impressive 33-footer is the entry point to that fleet.

It uses quite a narrow beam with asymmetrical chines and spray rails, which enable it to heel into a turn in much the same fashion as a monohull and to ride the chop without spitting clouds of spray over that bow.

Capable of 56 knots with twin 400hp Verado outboards , it can also reportedly achieve cruising economy of just 2.5lpm for a range of around 500nm.

The internal arrangements are also really practical – with high capacity deck drains and an automatic fresh water flushing system for the outboards you can simply hose this boat down after a trip and get on with your day.

The fuss-free fit out includes multiple bait wells as well as lots of drained, insulated lockers that do a great job as ice chests and storage spaces, and the squared off bow provides lots of seating to supplement the big open deck of that half cockpit.

It might be built with fishing in mind, but as a rapid offshore performance machine, this might just be the perfect power catamaran for monohull lovers.

Archipelago 47

The Archipelago 47 is a seriously good looking boat. Built from aluminum on the Isle of Wight with design input from commercial specialist Chartwell Marine, its low roofline, reverse screen, wide beams, slender forward hulls, and raised bridge deck give it a seriously potent profile, and that’s precisely what this boat is all about.

The idea is to deliver proper long distance offshore performance alongside a handy turn of pace in a homely fit out, and the Archipelago delivers that.

Built from 8mm hull plating with 6mm topsides, this Category A boat is rated to carry 12 people and sleep up to eight people in four cabins.

Reserving one entire hull for the owner’s suite is a really attractive option, but in all cases headroom is great and huge vertical picture windows provide amazing views from bed level.

The saloon features a large galley and lounge, as well as a raised helm with a shut-off partition for night nav. There are still some design tweaks required, particularly at the helm and the aft end, to maximise this boat’s potential, and if you want a flybridge you’ll need to look toward the Archipelago 52 instead, because on this particular boat that’s not an option.

But with space up top for all kinds of expedition friendly tenders, toys, cranes and solar panels, this tough go anywhere power catamaran has plenty going for it.

Vandal Explorer

As a foil-assisted, outboard-powered, flybridge equipped, aluminium power catamaran, the Vandal Explorer is certainly not the mainstream choice, but of course it was never designed to be.

Created by Ben Mennem, who wants to enjoy the sun-drenched waters of the Med, in collaboration with Norwegian designer Espen Oeino, who loves outdoor adventures in the Nordic States, it seems to straddle both camps.

It uses a wide open main deck with skeletal bars rather than rigid bulkheads to keep you properly in touch with the sea. There’s also a big aft platform between the Verado XTO outboards, which operates as a passerelle, and thanks to a ladder and rain shower does a great job for watersports too.

Ahead of the cockpit lounge there’s a big transverse galley tucked inside the shelter of the pilothouse structure, and there’s also a raised full-beam bow cabin with a separate incinerator toilet.

It’s a bit noisy on that main deck when you’re underway and the limited two-berth arrangement of the base boat is likely to compel some people to question its overall practicality.

But as a tough and lightweight 40-knot boat with space for 14 people, a cool off-grid aesthetic and all the custom friendly flexibility you could want, its simplicity is actually a really key part of its appeal.

The Aquila 44 is a proper wide-beam cruising cat

Built at Sino Eagle’s 1million sqft facility in China and developed in collaboration with the renowned J&J Design Group, Aquila is a specialist power catamaran builder and that absolutely shows.

Capable of up to 20 knots with the top rated Volvo Penta D4 420s, the Aquila 44 uses bow bulbs for extra waterline length, a softer ride and improved stability at displacement speeds.

But is the way it uses its 21ft beam that really impresses. In the aft cockpit a convivial c-shape dinette sits opposite a fold-out bar at the aft galley.

At the bow a set of steps connects the foredeck lounge directly to the flybridge, which is great for practicality as well as for large partie, and up top a central walkaround helm pod keeps things more sociable and inclusive than on any other boat in this class.

There’s a proper main deck helm too if you want it, plus sleeping for six in three private ensuite cabins, including a brilliant owner’s cabin that occupies the full beam beneath that foredeck.

If you need extra performance and style you could of course look toward the brand’s smaller, narrow-beamed, outboard-powered sport line, but for proper power catamaran lovers this big, cleverly arranged entertainment platform feels exactly right.

Tomahawk 620 centre console 2024 review

Tomahawk powered cat has another crack at the single-engined multihull formula.

Made in Chinderah in northern NSW, the Tomahawk 620 is a single outboard-engined centre console fishing/workboat with an asymmetric catamaran hull. We tested this tough new plate alloy cat on the Gold Coast, paired with a 130hp Yamaha extra-longshaft outboard engine.

Making a powered catamaran work with a single engine is the white whale for many power trailer boat makers.  Many have tried, but few have been successful – at least with regard to larger-size trailerable cats.   

In the 1970s the Markham Whaler made a reasonably successful 4.0/4.3-metre fibreglass cat with a single outboard engine, but the engine was mounted behind one of the sponsors, not in the centre of the transom.

In the 1990s the Websters Twinfisher (no relation to the author) was successful in producing smaller cats with a single centrally mounted engine, but it took some experimentation to get it right, and some models just did not work.

The problem with mounting the outboard engine in the centre of the transom and in the middle of the tunnel is that the propeller has to rotate in water that is already mixed with air. This creates propeller ventilation with the propeller rotating but getting no grip, or bite, on the water.

Propeller ventilation in a single-engined cat will even occur when running in a straight line. And you can forget about taking corners with any speed as the propeller will ventilate, the engine will over-rev, and the boat will go nowhere.

The solution, and the only way to make a powered cat work well with a single centre-mounted engine is to fit a water/wave deflector/breaker in the aft/stern area of the tunnel between the two outer sponsons. This should allow the engine’s propeller to spin in clean, undisturbed water.

It’s not easy though and it usually takes a lot of experimentation with engine mounting heights and different-sized propellers to get it right.

One boat maker that appears to have the single-outboard engine cat thing sorted is Blue Diamond Marine .

This northern NSW commercial powered catamaran maker has launched the Tomahawk 620, a futuristic-looking aluminium centre console with a unique asymmetric catamaran hull and a reverse-raked twin hull bow shape.

We tested the launch model, a centre console paired with a single 130hp Yamaha outboard engine.

Price and equipment

The Tomahawk 620 is the first of what will one day evolve into a family of Tomahawk models.

This single outboard-engined aluminium catamaran will be available in lengths ranging from 4.0 metres through to 7.5 metres, and with a centre console, cuddy cabin, hardtop cabin, and bowrider configurations.

Similar to its larger (up to 14.0 metres) catamarans produced for commercial and workboat applications, Blue Diamond Marine’s Tomahawk recreational models will be available with a high degree of customisation, at least with regard to the deck layouts and interior features.

So you can change the size of the console on centre console models, fiddle with transom coaming heights and widths, and add or subtract features and amenities.  

Our centre console test boat was outfitted to a medium specification, and built in class 2D Survey.

Key features include a vinyl hull wrap to the topsides; an overhead hardtop/rocket launch rod rack; a pair of large hull-side opening doors; EVA foam rubber flooring throughout; transom towing arch; twin boarding steps; navigation lights; and an anchor winch.

With the above features, as well as a Garmin multifunction fishfinder and chartplotter and an Icom VHF radio, our Tomahawk 620CC is priced at around $130,000 with a single extra-longshaft (25-inch) 130hp Yamaha outboard engine and a custom single-axle alloy trailer with brakes and an auto catch/release boat latching system.

Hull and engineering

The Tomahawk 620 single-engine powered catamaran was designed by multiple 18-foot skiff world sailing champion Scott Ramsden in collaboration with marine engineer Austin Kell.

The catamaran hull has an asymmetric design along with a wave piercer-like reverse-angled bow and stem shape which is very effective in cleaving through bay chop and ocean swell.

Running the full length of the tunnel is the wave breaker/water deflector that not only feeds undisturbed water aft to the Yamaha's propeller but also eliminates tunnel “slap” at displacement speeds.

The Tomahawk has none of that; you can slow-troll directly into the sea offshore without that annoying shudder that afflicts some cats when heading upwind.

The asymmetric shape of the Tomahawk hull also allows it to corner more easily at speed, whilst maintaining quite a flat and level stance through the turn – cats tend to naturally lean out.

Large outer and inner chine flats on each sponson provide lift/buoyancy and more planing surface for improved efficiency, spray suppression and following sea performance.

The Tomahawk is durably built. The hull sponsons and transom are welded from 4.0mm plate alloy, while the topsides are made using 3.0mm thick alloy.

Internally, the Tomahawk has a 4.0mm tread plate welded alloy floor with giant scuppers at the transom to self-drain water quickly out of the boat.

The Tomahawk 620 centre console is not the prettiest of plate alloy catamarans, but it is certainly practical, effective, and built to last.

Design and layout

Essentially, the Tomahawk 620 centre console has one large, rectangular open deck, interrupted only by a dual-width centre console helm station beneath a welded aluminium T-top with rod rack.

For fishing and workboat applications, this open, uncluttered layout is ideal.

I also like the treatment of the forward deck area, which is large enough to be described as a forward cockpit.

Forward of a two-seater bench seat/console safety gear locker, the bow cockpit is 640mm long by 2.26 metres wide. That’s easily enough space for a couple of anglers to stand and fish over the bow.

This deck area is squared off due to the catamaran hull shape, and there is a massive 783mm of freeboard forward so you can securely stand up front in rough weather.

There is ample storage space, too. Flanking a central anchor locker are two wide storage bins with SOPAC hatch covers to enclose the contents.

To each side of the front cockpit, there are wide side storage pockets beneath equally wide side deck coamings.

The only thing missing that would be easy to add are internal coaming bolster pads to make it even more comfortable to stand and work from this bow fishing deck space.

Helm and console

The dual-width centre console helm station is welded to the floor for strength and rigidity. It is made entirely from aluminium and is relatively unadorned.

The console has a full-width angled fascia and a flat dash top surface. Beneath it, there is a storage area with space behind that to access the wiring panel.

On the test boat, the steering wheel and throttle were traditionally mounted on the starboard side with loads of panel space alongside to fit the optional Garmin multifunction fishfinder/chartplotter, Icom VHF, and switch panel.

Above the console, the test rig was fitted with a clear windshield and welded front mounting struts for the T-top.

Fronting the helm station, our test boat was fitted with twin individual folding seat squabs for the skipper and co-pilot, behind which was a full-width padded backrest.

This seating layout works a treat as it makes it easy to switch between standing or sitting at the helm, and the skipper can choose to stand while the co-pilot remains seated.

Other helm seat options are available including a full-width lean seat box with storage and/or a live bait tank, and more.

Cockpit and transom

The self-draining cockpit stretches 2.75 metres behind the helm console aft to what is quite a low transom and outboard well.

Personally, I would order the boat with a higher transom with more freeboard, but the low transom and short outboard splash well works well for some applications.

Either way, there is heaps of uncluttered open deck space for fishing and diving.

On the subject of diving, the test boat was optioned with two large, very sturdy entry/dive/loading doors that open inward to rest up against the transom.

The two opening doors are properly solid and use a heavy-duty hinging system that looks to be unbreakable.

Other notable features include transom corner battery/bilge lockers, full cockpit EVA foam rubber flooring, a pair of sub-floor kill tanks, pop-up cleats, and a towing arch.

On the water

The Tomahawk 620’s powered catamaran hull carves up wind and wave chop as well as most other good cats I have tested, but with the advantage that it can do all the cool cat stuff with just a single outboard engine mounted out back.

The boat handles well too. There’s just a slight outward lean during tight turns, and the boat sits flatter and feels more agile than its rivals when cornering and manoeuvring at speed.

The wave/water deflector built into the tunnel of the boat is also effective as I could power out of turns with minimal propeller slip/ventilation from the single Yamaha outboard engine.  

Offshore, the test boat proved well-mannered and easy to control as well.

In a following sea, I could feel the double chines holding and lifting up the bow so that it surfs down waves rather than ploughing into them, and that’s a good thing.

Heading upwind there is some patter from the aluminium hull, but the ride is quite comfortable and predictable.

The test rig was not fast though. We recorded a top speed of just 27.3 knots, although that was with four adults onboard.

In smoother conditions and with only two people onboard I expect the boat would top 30.0 knots.

The hull is rated for a maximum of 150hp, and I would be tempted to fit the larger engine.

Mind you, bolting a larger, heavier motor to the transom might upset the boat’s otherwise excellent balance and stance at rest and underway.

The Tomahawk 620 centre console is a unique, innovative powered catamaran for inshore and offshore anglers, divers, adventurers, rescue groups, commercial operators (the boat is built in 2D Survey) and more.

With a requirement for just one outbaord engine strapped to the transom rather than two, the Tomahawk is cheaper to buy and maintain, and more fuel efficient than a regular cat.

But similar to most good powered cats, the Tomahawk is smooth, safe and stable in the rough stuff, as well as being over-built from durable 5083 marine grade plate aluminium.

I look forward to seeing more of these tough new boats on the water.

YACHTSMEN INTERNATIONAL is proud to present this exceptional 2015 115’ SUNSEEKER MOTOR YACHT ‘INSIGNIA’. Lying Spain.

Delivered in 2015, she is the last of the highly successful 115 Sport Yacht models built and fitted with signature Black American Walnut panelling throughout. The open-plan saloon has extensive seating, a full wet bar and an entertainment centre including an upgraded 65-inch television screen and Kramer AV System. Boasting a special feature in a pair of port and starboard sea balconies accessed via sliding patio doors in the Saloon, it is complimented forward with a formal dining area seating for up to 10 guests. The aft cockpit is fitted with everything needed for al fresco entertaining and dining including built-in bench seating and a table and chairs along with a full wet bar and ice maker.

INSIGNIA accommodates 10 guests in a total of 5 cabins, all with entertainment centres, television screens and ensuite bathroom facilities. These cabins comprise of 3 fixed Double Bed Cabins and 2 further Twin Bed Guest Cabins which both boast a sliding berth option converting to double beds depending on your guests. This ideal cabin layout gives the perfect combination of layout to facilitate the guests requirements aboard. A beautiful theme of interior design gives an amazing sense of space and comfort throughout. In addition, there are ample quarters for 5 crew members.

The tender garage has space for numerous toys along with upgraded outdoor waterfall shower for the aft beach club. The flybridge boasts a striking Jacuzzi and Sunbathing arrangement as well as dining area for up to 14 guests on the port side and highly popular bar on the starboard side. Built for enjoying life on the water the Sunseeker 115 Predator is one of Sunseeker’s most popular models.

Symmetrical stairs from the aft deck down to the large swim platform provide easy access to the sea and the tender garage which houses a 5.4m tender, and 2 jet skis. The hydraulic swim platform submerges for easy launching of the tender and further toys.

With more internal space, and similar plan, to the 34 Meter Yacht, the 115 is appointed throughout to the highest standards, be it the AV or AC equipment, with of course individual cabin control of both, and with much of the infrastructure so neatly concealed in the cabinetry, merging with the onboard aesthetic. Another option on the main deck is to have convertible balconies through the bulwark on both sides of the saloon which, when combined with doors from the saloon, make for patio extensions. Another desirable feature of this boat is that it has a main-deck master stateroom which provides for stunning views for the owner.
