Remembering Airstream’s fanciest trailer: the Land Yacht

The nautically-themed trailer is out of production, but its memory lives on in other Airstream models

airstream sovereign land yacht dimensions

Airstream trailers have been nicknamed a lot of things: the Silver Bullet, a Toaster-on-Wheels, and even the Silver Twinkie. But the now iconic American aluminum trailer—especially its largest models—has also been known as a “land yacht,” thanks to its high-end design reminiscent of the largest ships on the sea.

Airstream lived up to this title in 2014 when it debuted what it called “the most luxurious Airstream ever conceived.” The special edition model—the Land Yacht 28 —boasted three rooms and was designed with the help of Mauro Micheli, head designer at yacht design firm Officina Italiana Design , with cabinetry from the Italian firm Tecnoform.

All of that impressive pedigree meant one thing for the Land Yacht: It was fancy. Designed to resemble a luxury watercraft, the 28-foot trailer slept six and came with boat-deck plank flooring, LED lighting, and Corian countertops. The master bedroom boasted a pillow top queen mattress, a 30-inch flatscreen, and plenty of under-the-bed storage.

The technology and decor was also first class. A powered pedestal table moved the dining room table out of the way to free up space, and a powered outdoor awning made shade accessible. The interior came in two color options, dark wood and cream or a lighter wood with dark grey seating fabric.

The Land Yacht started at $146,362 and because it was a special edition model, it had limited production.

“It doesn’t come down to how many Special Edition units we sell, it’s about creating truly unique models that allow our team, and those we partner with a creative outlet to try new ideas,” said Bryan Melton, General Manager of travel trailers at Airstream.

“When you remove certain constraints, you allow engineers and designers to maximize their creativity. The results are truly special, like the Land Yacht, which continue to make strong statements within Airstream’s prolific history.”

airstream sovereign land yacht dimensions

Not long after the debut of the Land Yacht, Airstream took many of that model’s favorite qualities and added them to the remodeled Classic trailer and their new line of Class-B luxury touring coaches . Today, the Land Yacht is still on the product page of Airstream’s website , but according to a reputable Airstream dealer in Colorado, the only Land Yachts still left for sale are in Canada.

For many Airstream fanatics, the Land Yacht will go down as one of the fanciest—and best designed—trailers in the company’s history. Take a 360-degree tour, over here .

Land Yacht

To strengthen the Land Yacht theme, Airstream consulted with Mauro Micheli, the acclaimed yacht designer for prestigious Riva Yachts

Airstream has an interesting history of building Special Edition models. In past years, they have offered the contemporary Eddie Bauer Edition as well as the rustic-themed Pendleton National Park Service Edition. One of the latest selective models to be conceived – and a departure from its other special trailer predecessors – is the Land Yacht 28, which was introduced in late 2014 and has achieved plenty of attention across the highways of North America.

Every special edition model that the company devises carries a distinct theme. What makes the Land Yacht so unique this time around is it was inspired by Airstream leaders of past and present – late company founder Wally Byam and current President and CEO Bob Wheeler as both share a passion for recreational sailing. As Byam inspired many traditional Airstream designs from his passion of travel – on and off the water over the years – Wheeler and his design team commemorated that passion into the Land Yacht 28.

Land Yacht

The exterior of the Land Yacht.

To strengthen the Land Yacht theme, Airstream consulted with Mauro Micheli, the acclaimed yacht designer for prestigious Riva Yachts and co-founder of Oficinia Italian Design firm based in Italy. The results were the iconic Airstream profile on the outside with a clean, modern and stylish interior with several forms of function on the inside.

“The Land Yacht is unique as we teamed with Mauro Micheli,” said Bryan Melton, General Manager, Travel Trailers for Airstream, Inc. “With our engineering input, he and his team created the design elements. Our goal was to have a super clean, beautifully appointed interior with attention to every detail. For example, he designed the fridge and freezer to be concealed behind a padded panel, while the cooktop and sink in the galley are concealed with a wood enclosure and built-in aluminum back splashes. They are all hidden providing a refined appearance, yet are easily accessed when they need to be used.”

“Airstream’s Bryan Melton explained that only 45 Land Yachts were scheduled to be built when the model was first introduced. There are only 12 left in the market place across North America and the last one – number 45 – will be completed at the end of September.”

Other key appointments are found in the lavy. While it’s not uncommon for Airstream trailers to feature the shower and toilet/sink in separate areas of the unit, the Land Yacht has an all-encompassing lavy with the essential components in the same space – with fit and finish executed to the tiniest of detail. Another functional design includes the master bedroom. It comes complete with a power memory foam, pillow top queen mattress, plus under bed storage, however, the standard 30-inch flatscreen TV is cleverly located behind a two-way mirror allowing two common functions in one small area.

Land Yacht

The all-encompassing head that includes a shower, sink, and toilet in one ideal location.

Some Land Yacht Standards Include:

• A powered solid wood dinette table* • Power stabilizers • A premium awning package • Comfortable, convertible seating • Power entry steps, • Induction cooktop • The Quietstream A/C unit* • Interior hardware* • A new bathroom design* (*Airstream Firsts)

“With its features, the Land Yacht has a heavy designer influence that makes it incredibly clean and unique with a strong yacht theme, while still making it functional, practical to use,” said Melton. “That’s really what it’s all about. Special editions are meant to take us outside our comfort zone allowing us to set new boundaries. The reward comes from our customers who are seeking something a little different, and our special edition models provide just that.”

Melton explained that only 45 Land Yachts were scheduled to be built when the model was first introduced. “We build only two a month and have since we began this Special Edition,” he explained.  There are only 12 left in the market place across North America and the last one – number 45 – will be completed at the end of September.

Land Yacht

The Land Yacht is available in two interior colors, Mocha (seen Here) and Polar (shown at top).

“The Land Yacht is kind of an ode to the olden days of Wally (Byam) with his dream and passion of travel, adventure and sailing,” explained Melton. “This model represents the most luxurious Airstream model, with fine detailing and design elements throughout. Once #45 rolls out of the factory, we will temporary suspend the famous Land Yacht badge.”

While Special Edition models from Airstream (including the Land Yacht) have a scheduled life span in the consumer marketplace, the influence and design that are incorporated into these models commonly stay within the Airstream brands. There were a series of features introduced in the Land Yacht, with the most popular being the Quietstream ducted A/C, which has become standard on all but the Sport Airstream models.

“It doesn’t come down to how many Special Edition units we sell, it’s about creating truly unique models that allow our team, and those we partner with a creative outlet to try new ideas.,” said Melton. “When you remove certain constraints, you allow engineers and designers to maximize their creativity. The results are truly special, like the Land Yacht, which continue to make strong statements within Airstream’s prolific history.”

Step Back in Time With the Nostalgically Preserved 1977 Airstream Travel Trailer

You can’t help but feel like you’ve stepped back in time when you enter this 1977 Airstream Sovereign Land Yacht. While it has been renovated where it counts, it’s packed full of vintage finds for heart-warming nostalgia.

The Sovereign Land Yacht has only had one owner with two long-term setups, including its current site on a small city farm mere minutes from downtown Winston-Salem, NC. As a result, it has incredibly low mileage for its age.

But low mileage is just one of many desirable features of this nostalgic house on wheels. In its 30-foot-long frame, it has a full bathroom, dual closets, dual twins, and a full-size futon sofa. It’s well and truly set up for family.

And you have two options for how you can enjoy the Sovereign Land Yacht. You can book a stay in it on a mini city farm within a 30-minute drive of Hanging Rock and Pilot Mountain state parks. Alternatively, you can call this boho-retro Airstream home permanently! It has been put up for sale for $32,000 and comes with all original paperwork and manuals included! Learn more about this Airstream here .

This is a barn find that wasnt stored in a barn. Its pretty rough inside. It will most likely need a parts of the floor replaced. Most of the cabinets are not reusable. I do have a sink base and sink top from an 1988 airstream that I will throw in. It will need to be put back together but in good condition and solid wood door fronts. The airstream door needs a new window and the inside skin of the door needs to be reformed and riveted back for the door to work properly. One window is broken on the body and the door is missing the frame as well as the window. There are 2 big dents and a couple holes in the body. I was going to gut everything and replace the floor and make it into a guest house. I have 4 tires that are weathered but I hauled it 40 miles on them. The fourth rim should be replaced as it doesn't fit correctly but might be mounted properly with different lug nuts. This is a fixer and bill of sale only. Located in Morongo Valley, Ca.

My wife and I started a reconstruction project with this beautiful Airstream but our situations have changed and we don't have the time to complete. It is gutted but we have every single piece that came out of it and it is all numbered to go back in her the way it came out. If you purchase this wonderful camper, we will place all the pieces back in her for transport. If you need more pictures please contact me. The hot water heater and water pump were ruined and will need to be replaced. It did not have the wall oven but the stove top worked fine but will need to have the carbon cleaned out.

I believe this is a 1974 Airstream - I have to check the title and if different will update auction - needs restoration . I purchased this last year with the intent to restore it . However I do not have the time and ended up buying a new travel trailer so I have no use for this now . When I got it I towed it a little over 50 miles to the storage area seen in the photos . It towed fine the tires held air but there will need to be replaced as they are old and the sidewalls are cracking . Brakes worked fine on it . We cleaned it up a little and pressure washed the outside . It will polish up nicely . I have no idea as to the condition of any of the electrical or mechanical items - ie fridge -stove - oven air con etc . I was told they worked fine many years ago but had not been used in many years . There is some rot in the wood floor in the main area to the right of the futon . You can see it in one of the pictures . Vandals broke out the front window - and 2 side windows on the left side as you can see . These are available from the used market . THIS WILL NEED A LOT OF WORK ! The rear bumper is loose as well . Listed here on ebay as well as I will list locally so if sold - I will cancel auction . Down payment of $750 due within 2 days - balance due within 7 days . Pickup can be arranged after sale - we can also give free storage until April 1st We have over 40 pictures of this Airstream -- email us at [email protected] and we will send them to you ! any questions just ask and we will see if we can answer them

When we purchased the trailer, we had the intention of renovating the interior. It had been stripped for the most part, but still had the original walls and linoleum flooring. We took the walls down, and ripped out the linoleum and insulation. Soon after, we lost time to work on the trailer and have been using it for storage since. One of the front windows is broken, and there is a small dent on the rear passenger corner. Aside from that, the body is in really good condition. we kept the fiberglass walls in case someone wishes to reuse them. Pick up is required, and cash only.

1978 Airstream 31' Land Yacht Sovereign

1978 Airstream 31' Land Yacht Sovereign

Randleman, North Carolina

This vintage Airstream is in very good condition. All the water lines have been replaced with modern pieces. The floor has been done with a wood laminate. Everything works. The refridgerator is a new electric unit. The hot water heater is gas and works fine. The heat and AC work fine also. The microwave is new and also comes with a flatscreen TV, DVD player and AM/FM CD player. The brakes and wheel bearings were done by the previous owner. Tires look great. There are very minor dings and dents. No holes. Also included are 3 1954 fold up chairs. A very rare find. There are two drawers of spare parts and pieces. I also have extra keys made. The original taillights sometimes don't work so I have towing lights strapped to the bumper for legal towing. It has a clear title in my name. One of the oval windows is cracked but I have a nice replacement. You will not be disappointed in this camper. It is located in my private campground in Sneads Ferry NC. Since I live 4 hours away the buyer must allow me to meet them on a day that I can make it down there. If the buyer can meet me between June 30 and July 5 I will subtract $200 from the buy it now price. The buyer must sent me a $500 non refundable deposit within 48 hrs. of the end of the auction. The remainder MUST be paid in cash at time of pickup. No exceptions.

1976 Airstream Landyacht Sovereign 31

Avatar photo

As one of the longest trailers that we’ve seen here on Barn Finds, and an original interior, this 1976 Airstream Landyacht Sovereign 31-footer is quite a trailer. At over 30 feet in length, this is considered a full-sized trailer and most of us could easily live in one this big. The seller has it listed here on eBay in Lake Mary, Florida and the current bid price is $7,500, but the reserve isn’t met yet.

Let’s get some terminology out of the way, which will hopefully make it easier to think about trailer weights in the future. Most of you probably know these terms already, but for those who don’t, the Unit Base Weight (UBW) is the dry or unloaded weight of a trailer. In the case of this trailer, that would be about 5,000 pounds. The Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) is the maximum weight safely allowed for each trailer. In this case, that’s about 7,200 pounds.

airstream sovereign land yacht dimensions

The Net Carrying Capacity (NCC) is the measurement limit of how much weight owners can carry on their trailers or RVs. In this case, it would be about 2,200 pounds. Lastly, the Htch Weight (HW) or Tongue Weight (TW) is the downward pressure on the hitch of the tow vehicle. This trailer, having a center bath, brings more weight forward than a rear bath model, and would have an HW of 650 pounds. Hopefully, that wasn’t too much info. This trailer appears to be in fantastic condition, but I wish they would have shown what the rear of it looks like. Almost every other part and area is shown but what you’d see while creeping up on it in the (hopefully) slow lane.

A four-burner gas cooktop is positively decadent! Well, not really, but for 1976, this is a nice little kitchen. It has almost everything a person needed in 1976 and probably for a decade after that, but times change and most people would have to upgrade parts of this interior. The seller says that it’s all original and everything works, so I’d leave it as is. The seller mentions a flatscreen TV, so it has that for a nice upgrade. Although a TV in my travel trailer would seem strange. That’s sort of the point of traveling I thought, to get away from blaring car warranty and walk-in tub commercials and things like that.

airstream sovereign land yacht dimensions

You already knew that it had a bathroom, in this case, a center bathroom located across from the kitchen, which can sometimes be a little awkward. With a shower, you’ll have no reason to leave this rig other than to catch your meals in the adjacent trout stream where you’ll be parked for the next couple of decades. Ahhh… hey, a guy can dream. Have any of you owned a big trailer like this 31-foot Airstream?

In the early 1970s I worked as a Electrical Specialist for FMC Corporation in Santa Clara building the FMC 2900R and Club Coach Motorhomes. My dad Supervised our interiors. A gas jet range in a trailer is beyond insane and very unsafe. Easy to leave the gas on a burner. The flooring looks cheap, thin veneers and probably all aluminum paneled walls. When you talk upgrades, you talk lots if re-outfitting and cash plus who’s going to do it? Now lets talk about pulling. Even with a Super Duty I would hesitate pulling 30 feet of train behind me. So under 10k park it hook it up and use as a guest house but get rid of that gas range please! jv -smash palace

Don’t understand the post issue with a gas stove. We have one in our RV trailer and in the tiny house we live in. They both works great.

Those who want to save the world have taken in their own hands to attempt outlawing gas appliances. Not going to work for many of us!! I’ve just replaced a 70 yr old gas furnace, readying to replace a gas water heater, & install either a Wolfe or Viking gas stove.

If you’re dumb enough to leave the gas on, well that’s just natural selection.

I don’t understand your comments on the gas range or towability. Propane is the only way to go in an RV. Otherwise you’re restricted to camping spots with electrical hook-ups. Anyone who tows with the propane tanks turned on is asking for trouble. As far as towing, length is secondary to weight. This Airstream is 31 feet but the GVWR is only a modest 7,200 pounds. That’s nothing. I’ve put tens of thousands of miles on my 2019 Ford F350 Super Duty (15,000 pound rated tow capacity) pulling our 35’ OAL travel trailer weighing in at a legal 11,000 pounds. There are bigger units out there as well. All done safely as long as the tow vehicle’s capacity is not exceeded.

At 31’ long x 8’ wide, this is bigger than my first TWO apartments combined! Nice “old”(?) Airstream, it’ll take an experienced “bumper driver” to keep this one under control in a hard Cheyenne crosswind. And as some RV parks are very often snobbish with their age limits on vehicles, on the outside this one looks to be one you could list as a 2016 and probably get away with it..

And I’ll bet your casting a fly for your dinner, Scotty. 👍🏻 Good on ya.

Better try jumping up and down on that bumper before you buy! These were notorious for frame rot in the back. If you end up on the ground after a few good hops… well, better that than having spent your cash and *then* finding out.

Call the hook 🪝 , and have it delivered to a spot by the lake 🪵, where it can be dialed in.

Any here old enough to remember Lucy and Desi ” The long, long trailer?”

Turn left, right here, Ricky! Lucy you got some splaining to do!

Avatar photo

Hmm, I happen to see a theme here with the author, perhaps wanting to relive those wonderful memories before the weight of the world crushed our spirits,,,kidding, but Scotty, as a kid, like me, did a lot of camping. Nothing this glorious, we both came from middle class families, and did fine with a truck camper, like Scottys, or a humble Shasta, like ours. Back then, we just didn’t associate with these behemoths. My old man was cheap, so we’d always stay at the “3 “Ws” or less” in the Woodalls, sometimes nothing more than an over flow lot. These were for on the “other side”, by the lake with flowers blooming and cherubs playing fiddles,, with all the other so called, “high class” campers. Many times for us, it was for the night, and was better than the back of a gas station. Did that too. This? Pretty classy, and I agree with Stan, you’d be a fool to actually pull this thing around, I mean, take a Mack to pull it. Folks went with one piece motorhomes for a reason. Schlep it to an undisclosed location, prop it up, pull the wheels, home sweet home. Considering what the LEAST expensive Airstream goes for today, not much more than a teardrop for $40grand,and “tiny homes”, all the rage today, about the same, makes this a freakin’ deal,,depending on the “funk” inside, and every vintage camper has it. I think as pulling these becomes more and more of a chore, you’re going to see more of this. And why are the burners on? And I’m sorry, ever crap on those toilets? Mmm-hmm, this is what I’d do. Park it inside an insulated, heated 2 car garage, and have a nice bathroom in the garage, live in the trailer, hey, it could happen,,,

The value of this will be limited because slide outs changed the RV world. It is amazing you one or two will transform the functional space of a trailer for two people. At under $10k I can sort of see the attraction of having this for a guest house, but as a towing proposition it looks like a parking headache.

If they are right at it being 7200 lbs, it should tow great. I tow a 38 ft gooseneck LQ horse trailer that is a lot heavier with my Super Duty and have no problems. At the right price this would be a great trailer, no glide out, but the length would help some with the extra room.

Avatar photo

Just curios, what would have pulled this back in 1976? A one ton?

typically yes any 300/350 would tow this. i have even seen heavyduty 200/250s do it. i personally owned a 76 d200 camper special, that was rated at 9000gvw and had a big block. all suspension and brakes were actually d300. and yes she hauled this or more many times. always used loaded hitches with sway control and made very very sure the trailer brakes were in top notch condition.

Thanks eric22t ! It sounds like you did it right. I can’t imagine a wagon pulling this back then! Take care, Mike.

Up till the mid-70s, a lot of full-size sedans were rated to tow in the 7000-8000 lb range. Station wagons had more rear overhang, so sedans actually worked better with heavy tongue weight. Most manufacturers offered towing packages that included HD brakes, cooling and trans.

We tow a 28′ Avion with a 2020 Jeep Gladiator with the Max Tow package (7,700 lb capacity). The Gladiator tows well and it’s much more maneuverable and economical than the 2010 2500 Super-Duty we used previously.

Looks like a giant silver Twinkie, nice rig to big for my 1/2 ton to pull safely anyway. Make for nice excuse to get a bigger truck.

Nice trailer to set up as a retirement mini home. Save on tax bills enough to make it affordable. If the reserve wasn’t too high it might be worth it.

The pricing on these units is all over the board. If this unit is all original then you may be better off gutting the interior and doing a complete remodel which could set you back $20-40K. If you are going to go that far then replace the floor too and check all the mechanical parts to the trailer as well.

I have a 31 foot Airstream, same as the one showed today, I have owned it many years and it is a super trailer. Lots of room and everything works as it is supposed to, the best part is the roof and siding, no water leaks, no rust and no wood to rot. The dealer I bought it from delivered it using a chev Impala and he said he delivers Airstreams to Florida every fall and back again to Ontario. The best money I ever spent.

I have a ’73 Sovereign. The mid bath is ideal from a weight displacement POV and helps w the rear separation from the main frame. I have a rear bath unit and had to have the separation repaired. I did a body off near full restomod done and couldn’t be happier.

The length leaves me w regrets from a towing POV, but once parked there’s nothing like a full size Airstream! I used to tow it w a Tahoe, but it was WAY undersized so now use a Ram 2500 diesel and I barely know she’s back there.

Re propane appliances, I have a four burner (would do two burner only looking back), three-way fridge and propane powered instant hot H20 heater. They could all be electric only as we don’t dry dock, but we used to and so propane was important at the time.

Regarding leaks, there is always a failed rivet somewhere. Just did a buskote seal for the roof to minimize the leaks and lengthen the life of the subfloor at the edges.

I never liked the outside looks of the Airstream, but most I saw of the insides were really good. These were the mark of people who had money back in the day… and I never ever heard any of those who owned one ever complain about it. Nothing wrong with having a gas range and what fool walks off from leaving a flame going??

My parents ordered a new 34’ Tri-axle back in the day when the dealer delivered it to the house, my mother refused to accept it with black wall tires. Those were traded out for white sidewalls that day.

Remember the movie, “The Long Long trailer”? Pulling this along a narrow mountain road would provide me with no pleasure at all. Just save your money and stay ant a nice bed and breakfast.

I love these comments. I would have to have a good sized lot (like 5 acres ) to put all these wonderful jewels onto if I bought every one ☝️ I drooled on.

Moscow, like other international urban areas , is decentralizing, despite considerable barriers. The expansion will lead to even more decentralization, which is likely to lead to less time "stuck in traffic" and more comfortable lifestyles. Let's hope that Russia's urban development policies, along with its plans to restore population growth, will lead to higher household incomes and much improved economic performance.

Note 1: The 23 ward (ku) area of Tokyo is the geography of the former city of Tokyo, which was abolished in the 1940s. There is considerable confusion about the geography of Tokyo. For example, the 23 ward area is a part of the prefecture of Tokyo, which is also called the Tokyo Metropolis, which has led some analysts to think of it as the Tokyo metropolitan area (labor market area). In fact, the Tokyo metropolitan area, variously defined, includes, at a minimum the prefectures of Tokyo, Kanagawa, Chiba and Saitama with some municipalities in Gunma, Ibaraki and Tochigi. The metropolitan area contains nearly three times the population of the "Tokyo Metropolis."

Note 2: The expansion area (556 square miles or 1,440 square kilometers) has a current population of 250,000.

Note 3: Includes all residents in suburban districts with at least part of their population in the urban area.

Note 4: Urban area data not yet available.

Road in city area.

The roads and ways of the city areas are very clumsy and many accidents are happening due to the short road. But you need to maintain the driving properly otherwise you may face accident. So now the government decided to expand the road which may put the positive effect on automobile sector. I think it is a helpful service for the society people. If you have a BMW car and you have faced any problem then better to repair it at BMW Repair Spring, TX for the best service.

Transit & transportation

Transit and transportation services are quite impressive in most of the urban cities; therefore people were getting better benefits from suitable transportation service. Urban cities like Moscow, Washington, New York and Tokyo; we have found high margin of transportation system that helps to build a better communication network in these cities. I hope through the help of modern transportation system we are able to bring revolutionary change in automobile industries; in this above article we have also found the same concepts to develop transportation system. Moscow is bursting Noblesse

Moscow is bursting Noblesse at the seams. The core city covers more than 420 square miles (1,090 kilometers), and has a population of approximately 11.5 million people. With 27,300 residents per square mile (10,500 per square kilometer), Moscow is one percent more dense than the bleach anime watch city of New York, though Moscow covers 30 percent more land. The 23 ward area of Tokyo (see Note) is at least a third more dense, though Moscow's land area is at least half again as large as Tokyo. All three core areas rely

Russians seeing the light while Western elites are bickering?

What an extremely interesting analysis - well done, Wendell.

It is also extremely interesting that the Russian leadership is reasonably pragmatic about urban form, in contrast to the "planners" of the post-rational West.

An acquaintance recently sent me an article from "The New Yorker", re Moscow's traffic problems.

The article "abstract" is HERE (but access to the full article requires subscription)

One classic quote worth taking from it, is: "People will endure all manner of humiliation to keep driving".

I do find it odd that the "New Yorker" article author says nothing at all about the rail transit system Moscow had, on which everyone was obliged to travel, under Communism. It can't surely have vaporised into thin air?

Moscow is a classic illustration of just how outmoded rails are, and how important "automobility" is, when the auto supplants rails so rapidly than even when everybody did travel on rails up to a certain date, and the road network dates to that era, when nobody was allowed to own a car; an article written just 2 decades later does not even mention the rail transit system, other than to criticise the mayor for "failing to invest in a transit system".......!!!!!!!!

This is also a give-away of "The New Yorker's" inability to shake off the modern PC ideology on rails vs cars.

City Street Guides by f.d. walker: A Street Photography Guide to Moscow, Russia

*A series of guides on shooting Street Photography in cities around the world. Find the best spots to shoot, things to capture, street walks, street tips, safety concerns, and more for cities around the world. I have personally researched, explored and shot Street Photography in every city that I create a guide for. So you can be ready to capture the streets as soon as you step outside with your camera!

At over 12 million people, Moscow is the largest city in Russia and second largest in Europe by population ( Istanbul is #1). An urban, cosmopolitan metropolis with more than enough glitz and glam to cater to the elite, but without losing its fair share of Soviet era roughness around the edges. It can be fast paced, brash, busy, and trendy like other big cities, but it has its blend of West meets Russia atmosphere and beauty that provides plenty of unique interest. The Red Square is as famous as it gets, but there’s so much more to this city, including the most beautiful subway system you’ve ever seen. It would take years to capture all of Moscow, but that means you have an endless amount of areas to discover.

airstream sovereign land yacht dimensions

So here’s a Street Photography guide so you can be ready to capture all that Moscow has to offer before you even arrive!

  • Patriarch’s Pond
  • Old Arbat Street
  • Maroseyka Street
  • Tverskoy Boulevard

Top 5 Street Spots:

1. red square.

The Red Square is the most famous square in not just Russia, but all of Eastern Europe. The name actually doesn’t come from the color of the bricks or communism, but from the name in Russian, Krásnaya, once meaning “beautiful” before its meaning changed to “red.” This large plaza is what you see on the cover of guide books and magazines for Moscow, with St. Basil’s Cathedral being the center piece next to Lenin’s Mausoleum surrounded by the Kremlin Wall. Of course, the Red Square attracts hordes of tourist due to the main attractions, but all that activity around an interesting atmosphere does provide street photo opportunities. It’s also the central square connecting to the city’s major streets, providing a good starting point to explore outward.

airstream sovereign land yacht dimensions

You’ll also find the popular pedestrian only Nikolskaya Street connecting the Red Square to Lubyanka Square. This line of expensive shops includes plenty of activity, while also leading you to another popular square. Filled with history rivaling any city, the Red Square and surrounding areas are the heart and soul of Russia.

airstream sovereign land yacht dimensions

2. Patriarch’s Ponds

Patriarch’s Ponds is one of the most exclusive neighborhoods in Moscow. Despite the name being plural, there’s only one large pond, but it’s worth a visit with your camera. It’s a popular spot for locals and expats to come relax or take a stroll around the pond. You get an interesting mix of young and old too, from young love to “babushkas” feeding pigeons. It’s a very peaceful park atmosphere in one of the nicer areas within the city center, while bringing enough activity for street photography.

airstream sovereign land yacht dimensions

The pond is shallow and in the winter becomes a popular spot for ice-skating too. The area is also well-known for the location in the famous Russian novel, The Master and Margarita.

3. Old Arbat (Stary Arbat)

Old Arbat is the most famous pedestrian street in Moscow, and dating back to the 15th century, also one of its oldest. Originally, it was an area of trade, but soon became the most prestigious residential area in Moscow. During the 18th century, Arbat started attracting the city’s scholars and artists, including Alexander Pushkin. Cafes lined the streets and impressive homes filled the neighborhood. Since then, New Arbat street was created as a highway in the area, while Old Arbat was paved for a 1km pedestrian only walkway.

airstream sovereign land yacht dimensions

Due to the historic buildings, famous artists that lived here, and the bohemian atmosphere, Old Arbat has become a big attraction for tourists today. Now, there’s a mix of cafes, restaurants, souvenir shops, street performers, street merchants and other attractions for visitors, and some locals, to come enjoy. It can get really busy here and there’s usually something interesting going on so it’s a good street to come walk with your camera for guaranteed life.

4. Gorky Park

One of the most famous places in Moscow is Gorky Park. The official name is Maxim Gorky’s Central Park of Culture & Leisure, which gives you an idea of what goes on here. When built, it was the first of its kind in the Soviet Union. Divided into two parts, it stretches along Moscow River. One end contains fair rides, foods stands, tennis courts, a sports club, a lake for boat rides, and more. This end brings more active life due to its number of attractions, while the other end is more relaxed, where you’ll find gardens, trees, older buildings, and an outdoor amphitheater.

airstream sovereign land yacht dimensions

Gorky Park attracts mostly locals so it’s a good spot to capture the non-tourist side of Moscow life. Muscovites come here to escape the city and unwind in a picturesque setting. The park remains alive outside of the warmer months too, especially when the lake turns into the city’s largest outdoor skating rink. I’d recommend taking the metro out here to spend at least half a day exploring the massive park’s life with your camera.

5. Maroseyka Street

Maroseyka Street is a popular area not too far from the Red Square. The long, winding street turns into Pokrovka and is lined with restaurants, cafes, bars and places to stay. It’s actually where I like to stay when I’m in Moscow due to its location and solid street photography opportunities itself. You have Kitay-gorod station near and if you keep walking southwest, you’ll get to the Red Square. But if you walk northwest, as it changes to Pokrovka, you can find a long street of activity for photography with its own interesting atmosphere.

airstream sovereign land yacht dimensions

6. Tverskoy Boulevard

Tverskoy Boulevard is the oldest and longest boulevard in Moscow, beginning at the end of Nikitsky Boulevard, and finishing at Pushkin Square, a spot to come for activity itself. The boulevard is made up of two avenues, with pedestrian walkways in-between. You’ll find grass, shrubbery, trees, benches and more walking it’s almost kilometer length. Many people come here to enjoy some relaxation, walk their dog, or just to use it to walk wherever they’re going. Its center location also provides a nice place to walk with your camera near plenty of other spots you’ll want to check out anyway.

Sample Street Walk:

For a full day of Street Photography, covering some of the best spots, you can follow this sample street walk for Moscow:

  • Start your morning walking around the Red Square (1), while exploring the surrounding area, including Nikolskaya Street
  • Then walk northwest to Patriarch’s Ponds (2) and slowly walk the pond and surrounding area with your camera
  • Next, walk east to the Pushkin Monument and stroll down Tverskoy Boulevard (6)
  • Once Tverskoy Boulevard (6) ends, it will turn into Nikitsky Boulevard. Follow this down until you get to the start of Old Arbat Street (3), across from Arbatskaya station
  • After you’re done walking down Old Arbat Street (3) for more street photography, spend some time checking out Moscow’s beautiful metro stations
  • To finish off the day with more street photography, get off the metro near Red Square (1) again, Maroseyka Street (5) or wherever you’re staying for the night.

3 Things I’ll Remember about Shooting in Moscow:

1. museum metro.

The Moscow metro system was the first underground railway system in the Soviet Union and today includes 203 stations across 340km of routes. The elaborate system has some of the deepest stations in the world too, with escalators that seem to go on forever. None of this is what makes it so special, though. Many of its stations feel like stepping inside a museum, making it without a doubt the most interesting and beautiful metro system I’ve been in.

airstream sovereign land yacht dimensions

When built, Stalin wanted to make the metro stations “palaces for the people” with marble, chandeliers, and grand architecture. The best part is the variety of architecture and styles used, making many of the stations a completely different experience visually. You could easily spend a whole day traveling the stations and there are even tours available for people who wish to do just that. My advice, though, would be just to buy a ticket and hop on and off at different stations, while exploring different lines. The museum-like surrounding mixed with the crowds of characters can make for a great photography experience.

airstream sovereign land yacht dimensions

Since there are so many stations, here are some of my favorites to check out:

  • Novoslobodskaya
  • Mayakovskaya
  • Elektrozavodskaya
  • Komsomolskaya
  • Ploschad Revolyutsii
  • Dostoyevskaya
  • Prospekt Mira

2. Moscow is Big

It’s no secret that Moscow is a big city, but it can feel even bigger with how spread out much of it is. This is especially true if you compare it to cities outside of Asia. If I compared it to cities in Europe, I’d probably say only Istanbul would warrant more time to really discover the depths of this city. Most only explore around the Red Square and surrounding area, but that is such a small part of the city. Although, that central area does give you plenty to see on its own.

airstream sovereign land yacht dimensions

Fortunately, I had a good friend living in the city to show me around, but it opened up my eyes even more to how much there is to discover in Moscow. It’s a big city with a variety of atmosphere that can take you from “east” to “west” and trendy to rugged depending on where you go. I’d imagine you’d have to live here a while to really know the city.

3. Cosmopolitan Mix of East meets West

Modern skyscrapers mixed with amazing architecture, a world-class metro system with museum-like beauty, trendy fashion and chic clubs, Moscow is a rich mix of Russian culture and history in a more western cosmopolitan package. There is a push to keep the Russian culture, while also pushing forward with a modern metropolis the whole world will envy. This comes with an impressive skyline, that continues to grow, and endless modernities, but with soviet nostalgia and atmosphere mixed in for good measure.

Mixed in with this grand western cosmopolitan atmosphere, is a strong national pride in Russia. This includes their famous leader, Vladimir Putin. Maybe no other place will you see a country’s leader more often. All over, from the pricey tourist shops to the underground walkway stalls, you’ll find goods with Putin’s likeness covering them. From t-shirts to magnets to Matryoshka dolls. There’s a strong national pride that can be seen around the city, which also extends to their leader. Moscow is many things. It’s East meets West, modernizations meets Soviet era, and a whole lot more.

What To Do For a Street Photography Break?:

Eat at a stolovaya.

Stolovayas are Russian cafeterias that became popular in the Soviet days. You grab a tray and walk down the line of freshly prepared local dishes, and select whatever you want from the chefs. They’re usually inexpensive and a much better value than restaurants, while giving you the opportunity to try from a wide selection of everyday Russian food. They’re also very tasty. I always include some borsch on my tray and go from there. The places themselves are all over Moscow and usually come with Soviet-era aesthetics to complete the experience.

Street Safety Score: 7

*As always, no place is completely safe! So when I talk about safety, I’m speaking in general comparison to other places. Always take precaution, be smart, observe your surroundings and trust your instincts anywhere you go!

Being the 2nd largest city in Europe with over 12 million people, you’re going to have your dangerous areas, but for the most part, it feels safe walking around. Russia is statistically higher in crime compared to most of Europe, but this generally doesn’t apply to tourists and visitors. Around the Red Square and surrounding city center, you should feel completely safe walking around. Pick pocketing can happen, but no more than other touristic places. I always explore Moscow freely without coming across too much to worry about. It’s a spread out city, though, so of course it matters where you are. Just use basic street smarts, know where you are and Moscow shouldn’t give you a problem.

People’s Reaction Score: 7

Moscow is fast paced, big city life, which usually means people aren’t too concerned with you, or your camera. I don’t find people notice or pay much attention to me when I’m out taking photos in Moscow. For the most part, people just go about their day. You shouldn’t get too many looks or concern. But it can depend on the area you are in. The more you stick out, the more you might get noticed with suspicions. I’ve never had any problems in Moscow, or Russia, but just be careful who you’re taking a photo of if you get out of the city center. Other than that, it’s about average for reactions.

Street Tips:

Learn the alphabet .

Much of Moscow, including the metro system, doesn’t use english. The Russian alphabet uses letters from the Cyrillic script, which if you aren’t familiar with it and don’t know the sounds, can be hard to decipher the words. This is most important for street names and metro stops when trying to get around. It can save confusion and make it easier getting around if you learn the basic alphabet. At the very least then, you can sound out the words to see which are similar in the english conversion, which can help matching them to maps. When out shooting street photography, getting around is as important as anything. So save yourself some time and frustration by learning the Russian Alphabet.

Use the metro

While Saint-Petersburg feels very walkable for a city its size, Moscow can feel very spread out, even for its bigger size. Outside of the Red Square area, you can have plenty of walking before getting anywhere very interesting, so you’ll need to take the metro a lot if you really want to explore the city. Maps are deceiving here too, it will always be further than it looks.

airstream sovereign land yacht dimensions

Another reason it’s less walkable than Saint-Petersburg is its completely different set-up. Moscow’s streets are mostly contstructed in rings with narrow, winding streets in-between. This is common with medieval city cities that used to be confined by walls, but you usually don’t have it in a city this massive. Saint-Petersburg has a more grid-like pattern that also uses the canals to help you know your way around. When it comes to navigating on foot in Moscow, it can be more difficult, so bring a map and take the metro when needed. It’s why Moscow’s metro carries more passengers per day than the London and Paris subways combined.

Explore other areas if you have time

Moscow is really big. While most people stay around the Red Square within the Boulevard Ring, there’s so much more to the city. I covered some other spots outside of this circle, but if you really want to see the city, you’ll need time. If you do have time, some other areas I’d check out first are Zamoskvarechye, along some of the south and western Moscow.

Moscow’s name brings a certain mystique, but once you’re there it might bring a different atmosphere than you expect. It’s big and sprawling, but beautiful in many ways. It can feel like a European capital on a grand scale, but you can definitely find its Russian side in there.

The urban sprawl of Moscow can be intimidating, but give it enough time and you’ll be rewarded with plenty to discover. All with the world’s best metro system to take you around.

I hope this guide can help you start to experience some of what Moscow contains. So grab your camera and capture all that Moscow has to offer for Street Photography!

  8. Remembering Airstream's fanciest trailer: the Land Yacht

The Airstream Land Yacht looks very nice, appears to be quality built. Looking at the Specifications, the one item that everyone needs to know is not listed. The Price. Most new 25 to 30 foot trailers sell for $20 to $30K. I suspect that that Airstream sell in the $80K range.

  15. The Evolving Urban Form: Moscow's Auto-Oriented Expansion

Last year, Russian President Dmitry Medvedev proposed that Moscow be expanded to a land area 2.3 times as large. Local officials and parliament were quickly brought on board. The expanded land area is nearly double that of New York's suburban Nassau County, and is largely rural (Note 2). Virtually all of the expansion will be south of the MKAD.
