Azimut Grande 26M Review (2022 Edition)

The new-entry level for Azimut’s Grande superyacht range packs a serious punch with five cabins, 30 knots and some spectacular design inside and out. We jumped at the chance to sea trial the 26M at the Cannes Yacht Show

Azimut Grande 26M Review (2022 Edition) image 1

Replacing the long-serving four-cabin Grande 25M, the 26M is a true next-generation design. Reflecting the modern, muscular style of other Alberto Mancini models, this boat definitely goes its own way to deliver a heady mix of space and pace, plus a few surprises. The result is like nothing Azimut has ever done before. This is not an entry-level model, it is a builder laying down a thrilling marker for what 85ft design can deliver.

Performance & Handling

Azimut Grande 26M design

Performance is a major part of the Azimut Grande 26M story and the headlines include an 85-tonne boat that can hit 30 knots with ease. But it is how this yacht is propelled that is of more interest.

Pod drives aren’t new, but the unique aft-facing directional pods used here, developed by Azimut and transmission specialists ZF, are the most powerful set-up we have seen on a yacht.

A choice of 1,550hp or 1,650hp V12 MAN turbo diesel engines is offered. Compare that to the largest forward-facing Volvo Penta IPS option which currently sits at 1000hp and you can see the massive boost this ZF Large POD 4600 drive is able to deliver.

More For Less

Azimut suggests top speeds of around 26-28 knots for the two respective engine options. Somewhat reassuringly, we hit a top speed of 30 knots on sea trials with the uprated MANs and an army of journalists and associated egos to weigh the boat down. With full tanks and cruising inventory that 28 knots looks very reliable.

To put the 26M performance into perspective, it is running faster than the smaller, lighter Grande 25M it replaces using the same 1,650hp engines - the 25m needed the 1,800hp MAN engines to get past 28 knots. It also compares well with the competition, which generally require twin 1,900hp or 2,000hp engines to hit close to 30 knots.

How much of this is down to the slippery aft-facing pod drives is hard to say. Azimut makes much of the weight-saving carbon fibre used across the superstructure but the 85-tonne displacement isn’t particularly light. The Grande 26M weighs in similarly to the new Ferretti 860 and is heavier than the 75-tonne Princess Y85.

It seems that the Grande’s excellent performance is down to good old in-house design, the new pod drives allied to Azimut naval architecture delivering the goods. And this big, voluminous five-cabin boat does deliver at sea.

The pod drives come with joystick control as standard with an optional docking station on the aft deck, so close-quarter manoeuvres should be straightforward for the captain and crew. The boat will mosey along all day at 1000rpm for a laid-back 10 knots and a near 900nm range, the optional Seakeeper stabiliser doing a fine job.

Bigger, Faster, Better

If you want to stiffen the ride up you can push to 1250-1500rpm but to really understand how good this modified vee hull is, leave 1750rpm alone and head straight to 1900-2000rpm where the smoothest 20-knot performance is found with no loss in range.

The everyday fast cruising range sits pretty reliably at around 260nm running between 23-25 knots, not anything game-changing but the ease at which it’s delivered does impress.

At 2000rpm and 23 knots, the Azimut 26M feels like it is barely breaking a sweat while the ride is taut and purposeful. Unlike some pod drive yachts we have driven, the steering is intuitive and immediate but without any sense of the hull snatching at the water, the Azimut turning in beautifully under full helm and taking any passing yacht’s wake with ease. It all feels so poised and balanced, with the optional Humphree active tabs keeping the ride wonderfully level and planted.

From the flybridge helm, you’d swear you were on a 60ft boat. It’s only when you’re back in port that you remember all the fun and ability has played out on a five-cabin, 85-footer.

Our two-direction runs averaged 30.4 knots at 2,350rpm, but the lasting impression is of that incessant power that builds remorselessly through the rev range and how well the hull harnesses it.

As a footnote, the Large POD 4600 drive is hybrid-ready, meaning it can be aligned to an electric motor at a later stage, something Azimut (and any sensible yacht builder) is surely looking to do

Design & Build

Azimut Grande 26M design

The Grande range has evolved spectacularly of late, headlined by a genuinely brilliant Trideck flagship, but the Azimut PR machine went into overdrive when the Grande 26M was announced. The replacement for the Grande 25M was clearly a very different kind of yacht loaded with new thinking, chief among these was the Deck2Deck system that utilises the tender garage’s teak door to create an extended terrace.

Arguably, though, the Grande 26M’s most important feature was a five-cabin layout, something that few other yachts at this length can manage.

But it is those pod drives that make it all happen. They are integral to the layout of the boat and its key features. Siting the engines further aft creates more room for the interior, allows the crew quarters to sit in the bows and leaves the stern of the boat free for a tender garage that creates the Deck2Deck system. And you thought drives were just about propulsion…

The other design solution to the problem of fitting five cabins into a hull of this size is to add a main deck owner stateroom, leaving below decks free to continue with the traditional four cabins. The challenge is to do it without affecting space for the salon, lower helm and galley, or ruining the exterior lines.

That Azimut has succeeded in its five-cabin quest is beyond doubt, the Mancini design is certainly bulkier than other Grande’s but also more sympathetic and linear than other high-volume boats. You can see how hard Azimut and exterior designer Mancini have worked, pushing out the forward sections to create the space needed for the main deck cabin, while retaining a clean, powerful look.

Inside, the design team has eked out every inch of the hull and superstructure to ensure there are no compromises on space. The quirky sophistication that marks out Achille Salvagni interiors we have seen on other Grandes gets dialled up to 11 here. The use of glass is breathtaking, the mix of materials beguiling and, this being a Grande model, there are plenty of unique moments added, it seems, simply because Azimut can, including some typically surrealist lighting. The result won’t be for everyone but it is the kind of inspired, detailed design you only used to find on custom builds.

As a crew-operated yacht, the design also had to work in proper crew quarters while ensuring smooth, discreet service from bow to stern, inside to out. Despite the pressure on the yacht’s interior, Azimut has worked in two side deck doors, either side of the galley, the port side connecting the crew quarters, lower helm station and deck for utterly seamless movement.

Interior Accommodation

Azimut Grande 26M design, Azimut interiors

We have managed to get on board most of the latest Azimut models, from the entry-level 53 flybridge to the Grande S10 and Trideck flagship. Across the range there is a style DNA that no one can, or would probably attempt, to match. Mixing materials, light and design spectacularly well, each new model usually ups the bar and adds a new level of finish and thinking for us to consider. But few have startled the senses quite like the Grande 26M.

The layout is key, sweeping through an open-plan salon, apparently made entirely of glass, to the owner’s cabin. Here, the sheer brilliance of the interior design and the work it required becomes clear. The cabin itself is unlike any other you will find below 30m, the incredible, deep, windows that run down each side of the cabin dwarfing the double berth.

Organic Owner Luxury

The eye is allowed to run forward into an open dressing area where a pebble-shaped piece of glass adds an element of bespoke design you would normally find on a 70m yacht. The ensuite lies forward, another mix of the traditional and new, with marbles and softly toned fascias.

The owner’s cabin sits slightly lower than the main deck, down a few steps from the companionway, a fact that shows the consideration to overall design at play here, those steps allowing the cabin to enjoy that bit more headroom within the external profile.

Back in the salon, the glass again dazzles, starting just a few inches from the sole and rising to the deck head. Added to the clean, modern free-standing chairs and sofas the entire scene is like a breath of fresh air - a sense that might be aided by Azimut's air treatment and ventilation system that circulates clean, filtered air from the outside around the interior.

The one downside to this free-standing glazed splendour is a lack of salon storage space. It might be style sacrilege to place a sideboard in front of the windows but it will require some creative thinking on stowage. With no fitted seat bases, the full-height units at the salon entrance are the only nearby options, so the crew quarters will have to take any overspill.

Equality Below

The four guest cabins are all ensuite and while the four-quarter layout is conventional, with symmetrical doubles aft and twins forward, the finish and feel are not. As with the stateroom above, the cabins mix plenty of light with modernist styling. Floating side tables, recessed hull windows and contemporary panelling create very friendly rooms, the clean ensuites warmed up with teak shower stalls. The only moot point is a carpet that adds the faint whiff of a budget boutique hotel.

We haven’t missed the galley, but we nearly did on test. Discreetly set forward of the salon, it hides behind a sliding door with some clever crockery lockers at its entranceway. It’s not the biggest galley but it is one of the smartest, connecting to both side decks and the crew quarters to make sure service is always discreet. There’s even a neat serving hatch for the dining area.

Storage should be adequate with the crew quarters just a few steps away. Deep, wide fridge and freezer drawers will soak up plenty of stores with lockers surrounding the space and there is a good amount of worktop to use. The crew quarters, where a neat mess area is joined by two cabins and a proper toilet compartment with a separate shower.

Helm Station

Azimut decks

The upper deck is where the owner may well choose to take the helm, and they will be surrounded by friends if they do. The twin helm seats are set before a considered console with space for two MFD screens. The visibility is excellent while wind defection worked well during our short time at sea.

For longer passages, the lower helm elevated slightly in its own pilothouse, is the place. There is only a single helm seat, but it is a very good one. Fully adjustable with a bolster, it offers the skipper excellent support and a great view through the single-piece windscreen. It’s worth noting that these mini pilothouses can often feel a little too snug and tight on visibility. The Grande 26M lower helm isn’t big but it does feel bright and workmanlike with the excellent single windscreen joined by very useful side windows.

The helm console easily fits in three MFD screens with navigation equipment and controls also mounted on a console.

Azimut Grande 26M flybridge, Azimut decks

Our sea trial couldn’t include a demonstration of the Deck2Deck concept but we did see it in action afterwards. It is a slightly time-consuming exercise to reconfigure the guardrails but the simple fact it exists and that it runs off an equally rare and wonderful tender garage is a pretty good place to start this section.

When extended, Azimut is quoting 18 square metres of deck space in total and one pretty special elevated terrace for guests. Somewhat exposed for use in port, it’s a great at-anchor addition for a boat that feels tuned into deck lifestyle.

The standard aft deck features sculpted benches facing in on an extending dining table. The scene is very superyacht even before you’ve run out the Deck2Deck extension.

Always Practical, Always Cool

Two excellent side decks run forward, both with steps up to the raised foredeck, where many boats only have one set. The side decks are excellent, wide and teak-laid, they are bordered by stainless steel stanchions rather than a bulwark. This has the twin effect of looking fabulous outside and allowing guests inside a great view out. There’s also a proper overhang, the overall effect is about as superyacht as you can get this side of 30m.

The foredeck is a ridiculously long sweep of luxury, with facing lounge seats leading to a massive sun pad. The necessities of yachting life are then neatly squared away in a lower level, where lines can be worked and anchoring duties performed.

There’s only one way to access the flybridge, with no internal stairs, and it’s the traditional steps up from the aft deck. The term ‘flybridge’ doesn’t really do it justice, though. This is an upper deck with a helm station, neatly and discreetly set forward to starboard.

Two handsome teak and stainless steel bar stools greet you at the deck entrance and that lifestyle vibe remains at all times, although in a softer, more laid-back way. The vast one-level deck has cool, pebble-like loungers across its aft, open to the sun. The rest of the seating lies under the hardtop and sunroof, a massive dining area and lounge wrapping around the port side, served by a full bar and grill.

Value For Money

All Azimut models sit at the premium end of the market. The great thing about the Grande range is that the design, style and flair that makes these boats so impressive come as standard. There are plenty of options on finish, but it will all sit with those modernist Salvagni style parameters.

The technical advancements of the yacht, the efficient pod-drive propulsion, active trim system, air treatment and extending deck system are all part of the 26M package.

Our Options & Pick

On the basis a stabiliser isn’t really an option anymore, you still have to pay extra for it but it’s a must-have for after-sale value, the main option to consider will be the engines. Normally, for a big cruising yacht such as this, the standard 1550hp 26-knot option would be the one to go for. But there was so much performance to enjoy between 23 and 30 knots that it really would be a shame not to, at least, the larger motors.

Azimut Grande 26M design

Azimut is a true yachting trailblazer, but it has surely surpassed all previous moments of game-changing design with this Grande 26M. What impresses us most is the way this Italian yard has delivered all the avant-garde attitude we have grown to expect, and love, while also laying down an unbeatable five-cabin cruising package. Through intelligent and often brave design that runs from the shape of windows to a unique pod drive, Azimut has triumphed. And the really exciting part is, you get the feeling this is just the beginning.

Reasons to Buy

  • Fantastic five-cabin design
  • 30-knot performance
  • Unique, high-power pod drives
  • Deck2Deck headlines feature-packed yacht

Things to Consider

  • Subjective styling
  • Lack of storage

We have seen massive design progression across the flybridge size ranges, but few have been as active as this 25-28m, superyacht-entry sector. Some builders have evolved the genre, some, like Sirena, have torn up the rule book completely, while Princess has been clever enough to do both.

The Sirena 88 is an obvious place to start because it is so different and successful. Offering up to six cabins, a massive flybridge, a very different modernist style and some impressive performance that hits 26 knots but also covers some 2,000nm at 9 knots this is a uniquely brilliant boat. It is probably the first to come with a Hammam too.

Princess has its clean Princess Y85 for lovers of more conventional flybridge ideals. The four-cabin layout won’t hold any surprises but the space on offer, inside and on deck, might, as will some powerful 30-knot performance. If you want something different, the X80 throws down a style gauntlet to match the Azimut and adds an upper lounge and the option of five cabins with a main deck stateroom or four cabins with a massive main deck salon and dining area that pushes right forward. The shorter hull length means the crew quarters are aft, with no garage. The X80 looks big on the water but can still hit 30 knots.

Both the Ferretti 860 and Sunseeker 88 Yacht are big powerful flybridge yachts in the more conventional sense, with four cabins below decks and sweeping upper decks. The benefit of this conventional layout is a bright open lower helm station that feels part of the yacht, where guests and crew can join the skipper. The Ferretti 860 is the more recent design with a clean exterior and vast open salon, there’s a tender garage too.

All of the Azimut’s rivals are shaft-drive boats with fast cruising and top speeds that can hit or get very close to 30 knots. The Sirena is the stand-out with its mix of range and pace.

02_G26M Running 1_Low res

Azimut’s new Low Emission Yacht, presented at Cannes Yachting Festival 2022, offers all the features of a superyacht in a length of 26 meters and introduces two novelties: the Deck2Deck™ terrace and the first Large POD propulsion system. The market rewards innovations in style and technology, with 22 units sold in the first two months since the launch.

The launch of the Grande 27M in 2018 was such a success for Azimut, both with the public and the market, that the model became a benchmark in the category. Today, Azimut presents the Grande 26M , inspired by the desire to amaze again by offering solutions designed for superyachts on a 26-meter boat and introducing an innovative propulsion system to reduce fuel consumption and CO2 emissions by 20%. The proposition met an enthusiastic reception right from the start, with 22 units of the Grande 26M already sold.

When it refers to a yacht, the term ‘super’ identifies specific characteristics, which the Grande 26M delivers through smart design choices that reflect the expectations of demanding owners in terms of the onboard experience: 5 cabins, including the full-beam owner’s suite on the main deck, and completely separated guest and crew flows. These distinctive features and the huge flybridge – 50m2 all on the same level – have never been seen before on a yacht this size.

In the words of Alberto Mancini, the designer of the Grande 26M’s exteriors : “The project was driven by the enthusiasm to create a compact superyacht, with five cabins, an enormous flybridge and a larger cockpit than usual for the category, which we wanted to extend to give the yacht a fully-fledged dining area overlooking the water.”

The result is the Deck2Deck™ Terrace, the first of its kind created using a transom extension system that pays tribute to the power of the ideas and expertise brought to bear by Azimut’s engineers. The Deck2Deck™ Terrace is formed by raising the teak-clad garage door to expand the size of the cockpit to over 18m2 . The walkaround table, when extended, seats up to eight guests in an al fresco dining room with a view out over the water.

02_G26M Deck2Deck 1_Low res

The creative design approach behind the Grande 26M is also reflected in the interiors, and particularly in the strategic choice of a partially raised wheelhouse, which, taken together with the smaller engine room resulting from the innovative Large POD propulsion system and the light carbon fiber superstructure – meaning more volume for the same weight – offers interior designer Achille Salvagni plenty of space to express his vision of organic architecture, in which the elements created by the designer are in complete harmony with the natural environment.

The shapes and hues are soft and warm like the marine environment seen through the huge full-height windows on the main deck and in the owner’s suite. Color accents in various settings on the yacht act as playful but discreet elements with which Salvagni sparks the imagination: the cobalt blue of the sofa and the suspended lamp over the dining table, the orange coffee table, the eye-catching chromatic details inside the cabins. The oak floor is perfect for interiors, conjuring up the warmth of teak, while the boards laid at a 45-degree angle give the impression of even wider spaces.

The star of the show is the owner’s cabin on the main deck, which is flooded with light through the two full-height glazed surfaces and represents a unique feature in this market segment. Salvagni’s idea is to rethink the spaces in the suite, contaminating the settings to offer greater depth: the cabin and bathroom are connected by an open dressing area, lit by natural light entering through original cell-shaped windows featuring curved, flowing lines, in another mini masterpiece of organic design. The same shape also appears in the handrail incorporated in the wall leading to the raised wheelhouse: the design is in the details.

GRANDE 26M, the new Low Emission Yacht from Azimut

Azimut has been investing in research for over ten years to develop innovative solutions that reduce the environmental impact of its boats and was the first brand to believe in POD propulsion systems. Drawing on its extensive experience, the Yard developed the new Large POD 4600 propulsion system for the Grande 26M in partnership with ZF . The system, combined with a 30% lighter superstructure achieved through the extensive use of carbon fiber, delivers 20% lower fuel consumption at the most frequent speeds.

These percentages are unmatched on the market today and have been achieved without compromising performance. The PODs pivot, eliminating the need for a rudder and the associated drag to achieve unrivalled performance for maneuvering and reaching high speeds, and the Grande 26M accelerates effortlessly to 28 knots. Compared with the POD systems already available on the market, the new ZF POD 4600 system was developed to increase efficiency on larger boats for the first time, with top speeds between 20 and 30 knots. An additional benefit of the system is higher torque at low speeds for easier maneuvering. The system is Hybrid Ready, because the future of Azimut is sustainable.

The Grande 26M joins Azimut’s fleet of Low Emission Yachts, which now includes more than half the brand’s models. These boats guarantee a 20 to 30% reduction in fuel consumption, and therefore CO2 emissions , compared with equivalent shaft line models with hard-chine hulls. This result has been achieved by combining three key factors: the adoption of innovative propulsion systems; the development of increasingly efficient hulls, tailored to master the challenges of each Series’ mission; and extensive use of carbon fiber to reduce weight.

Azimut announces sales of 22 Grande 26M units

Italian yard Azimut has announced that 22 units of its new Azimut Grande 26M series have been sold since the first hull hit the water in August 2022.

The new 26 metre yacht made its debut at the Cannes Yachting Festival in September and went on to appear at the Genoa Boat Show, alongside the new Grande 36M.

Both models offer an impressive focus on low emissions, with the 26M claiming to reduce fuel consumption and CO2 emissions by 20 per cent compared to previous models. This is achieved with the yard's pioneering new propulsion system – created in collaboration with German manufacturing firm ZF – combined with a superstructure that is 30 per cent more lightweight than previous models thanks to its generous use of carbon fibre.

The yacht's exteriors are by Alberto Mancini , while interior styling has been helmed Achille Salvagni . Mancini attributes part of the model's success to its layout, which has been thoughtfully considered to create a yacht that feels larger than 26 metres in length.

“The project was driven by the enthusiasm to create a compact superyacht, with five cabins, an enormous flybridge and a larger cockpit than usual for the category, which we wanted to extend to give the yacht a fully-fledged dining area overlooking the water," he explained.

One of the yacht's new features is something that Azimut has dubbed the Deck2Deck terrace. The trademarked design is used to extend the available cockpit area by raising the teak-clad garage door on the lower deck to lie flush with the main deck. The walkaround table, when extended, can seat up to eight guests in an al fresco dining setting and the full area covers 18 square metres.

Other al fresco features include a large 50 square metre flybridge that spans almost the entire length of the superyacht.

Accommodation is offered across five cabins, including a full-beam owner's suite on the main deck which is flanked by full-height windows and has its own vanity and en suite in the forward section The yacht also has completely separate crew and guest areas.

According to BOAT Pro , there are currently nine Azimut Grande 26Ms in build or launched.

The result is the Deck2Deck™ Terrace, the first of its kind created using a transom extension system that pays tribute to the power of the ideas and expertise brought to bear by Azimut’s engineers. The Deck2Deck™ Terrace is formed by raising the teak-clad garage door to expand the size of the cockpit to over 18m 2 . The walkaround table, when extended, seats up to eight guests in an al fresco dining room with a view out over the water.

The creative design approach behind the Grande 26M is also reflected in the interiors, and particularly in the strategic choice of a partially raised wheelhouse , which, taken together with the smaller engine room resulting from the innovative Large POD propulsion system and the light carbon fiber superstructure – meaning more volume for the same weight – offers interior designer Achille Salvagni plenty of space to express his vision of organic architecture, in which the elements created by the designer are in complete harmony with the natural environment .

The shapes and hues are soft and warm like the marine environment seen through the huge full-height windows on the main deck and in the owner’s suite .

The same shape also appears in the handrail incorporated in the wall leading to the raised wheelhouse: the design is in the details .

The system, combined with a 30% lighter superstructure achieved through the extensive use of carbon fiber, delivers 20% lower fuel consumption at the most frequent speeds .

These percentages are unmatched on the market today and have been achieved without compromising performance. The PODs pivot, eliminating the need for a rudder and the associated drag to achieve unrivalled performance for maneuvering and reaching high speeds , and the Grande 26M accelerates effortlessly to 28 knots.

Yachts sale DL YACHTS DREAMLINE

The latest member of DL Yacht’s Dreamline series, the Dreamline 26M is a great ship which, despite its relatively small size (26 meters in length), has all the making of a luxurious contemporary superyacht.

The shape of the hull, designed by Giuseppe Arrabito, is the result of extensive research and testing, and ensures the vessel encounters the least amount of resistance possible as it cruises across the sea. A similar level of care has been afforded to the development of the interior as well. Generous, well-lit interior spaces (done exclusively with LED lights) featuring soft, tasteful tones. Accommodations include three luxurious guest cabins, as well as comfortable quarters for the ship’s crew.

The spacious exterior is perfectly suitable for countless hours of entertainment at sea. Among others, there is a large garage aft which is not only home to an RIB, but can also be easily converted into an onboard gym or beach area.

MacGregor 26 (newer model)

This hybrid powersailer is so popular that the company has a year- long backlog of orders. its an inexpensive entry level sailboat also capable of towing a water skier..

MacGregor Yachts, one of the largest builders in the US, has a well-established reputation as the producer of inexpensive boats. Located in Orange County, California, its plant sits across the street from the former headquarters of Westsail and Islander in a neighborhood that in 1973 built more than 24,000 boats with a retail value of $88 million. A year later, the number of boatbuilders shrank from 46 to 22. MacGregor endured by sticking to a business plan that is strong on financial and management principles and devoid of romance.

The company was founded by Roger MacGregor as a hobby following his successful completion of the MBA program at Stanford University, where he graduated Phi Beta Kappa, second in a class of 200; he had previously graduated Phi Beta Kappa with a degree in economics from Occidental College.

MacGregors studies at Stanford produced a business model based on the sailboat industry that he eventually used as the blueprint for the company. In 1964, while employed at Ford Aerospace, he began building boats as a hobby. Wife Lou, who is still active in the business, oversaw the embryonic stages of the company.

In 1967, when I was finally making more money from the hobby than my real job, I moved into boatbuilding full time, he recalled.

Since that modest beginning the company has built more than 37,000 boats in its 65,000-square-foot factory, and has annual sales of $10 million. It employees 150 people.

Initially marketed under the Venture brand, the name was changed to MacGregor in 1977. Though the company focused on 22- to 25-foot fiberglass sloops, it made a foray into the big boat market in the 1980s with the MacGregor 65 ULDB, which MacGregor claims was the most successfully produced big boat in the industry. A decade earlier, MacGregor built a 36′ catamaran.

Unlike many industry doomsayers, MacGregor doesn’t agree that the sailboat market has dried up; he thinks people have lost interest because of a perception that sailing is too complicated. To attract newcomers to the sport, he builds boats that are simple to operate, require little maintenance, and are low-priced. His 28-page owners manual is written in everyday English, and includes basic sailing instructions. He also has recruited a loyal dealer network that understands the product and caters to first-time buyers.

MacGregors strategy is to concentrate the entire production effort on one boat so as to amortize production and tooling costs over a long run.

Over the years we have zeroed in on the 26-footer for a number of reasons. It is the largest boat that can be easily and safely trailered and launched, and economically shipped in containers.

Originally introduced as the 26X, the new model replaced an earlier MacGregor 26, a water-ballasted sloop previously reviewed in PS (November 1, 1987 and August 1, 1995); 7,000 of the first model were produced. Since its introduction in 1995, 4,000 of the new 26s have been built, and the company enjoys a backlog of orders stretching into 2001. MacGregor sees no need to increase production, which currently turns out one boat every two hours.

The Design The 26X, conceptually similar to the powersailers built by Lancer in the 1980s, represents MacGregors attempt to reach several markets with a boat capable of sailing at 7 knots and powering at 20-plus knots.

From an aesthetic standpoint, the boat gets average marks. Viewed from the bow, with an entry angle of 18, it has a conventional appearance. Viewed from the beam, its high topsides are evident. Freeboard amidships is 3′ 5″.

Unlike the rounded sections of her predecessor, the new model has a flat, straight bottom designed to enhance planing while under sail or power. It also has a harder turn of the bilge, which translates to a higher initial righting moment. Some owners say the boat will carry a genoa in 15-18 knots of wind before reefing the main or shortening the headsail.

The boat displaces 3,750 lbs. with full tanks; the sail area/displacement ratio (SA/D) is 19 and the displacement/length ratio (D/L) is 138, which indicate the potential for speed.

However, MacGregor says, these figures don’t mean much because crew and gear weight is such a big part of the all up weight. He said that every 100 pounds of weight in the boat reduces speed under power by one mile per hour.

Construction MacGregors theory is that he can sustain his success by eliminating inconsistencies and waste from the production process. Fiberglass fabrics used in the lay-up are cut in patterns and bundled in sequence for laminators.

The hull, deck and interior liners are solid, hand-laid fiberglass, and MacGregor brags that theres not a chopper gun in the factory; instead, workers use low-volume airless guns to wet out resins. No cores are used.

He is particularly rankled by critics who claim his methods are quick and dirty.

We have the neatest, most tightly controlled plant on the earth, and these boats arent failing, he said.

The lamination schedule calls for a layer of 1-oz. mat, followed by 10-oz. cloth, a layer of 1.5-oz. mat, 24-oz. roving, and layers of 1.5-oz. mat and roving. High-load areas in the centerboard trunk and bow have 15 layers of fiberglass built to a thickness of 3/4″; low-load areas are 3/16″-3/8″ thick.

The hull-deck joint is two outward-turning flanges that are secured with stainless steel bolts and locknuts with nylon inserts located on 4″ centers. The joint is bonded with 3M 5200 and the seam is covered with a rubber rail.

The liners are bonded to the hull with 6″ wide strips of mat and roving.

Boats built since spring 1999 have a new deck structure. Older boats have a balsa-cored deck and companionway hatch. The new deck is stiffened by a series of solid fiberglass U-shaped beams with an outer flange bonded to the inside of the deck. The beams, which are on 4″-6″ centers, are filled with foam, over which are laid layers of 1.5-oz. mat; the deck liner is then laid over the deck, which compresses the foam and bonds the deck and liner.

MacGregor said the new method produces a stronger structure and avoids the problems of rot with balsa. The process also reduces weight by 125 lbs.

Water ballast is carried in a chamber that runs from 3′ forward of the transom to the V-berth; it is 4′ wide and acts as a longitudinal stringer. It is enclosed by a fiberglass module bonded to the hull.

This leaves precious little area below the sole for a bilge. Because there is no way to inspect the bilge without looking behind the galley, there is no way of knowing how much water is in it. The company now drills a 1/2″ hole in the sole below the companionway to allow bilge water to appear on the floor of the main cabin.

Without the hole it is possible for the boat to collect a really large, stability-threatening load of bilge water, MacGregor said. Since the liner floor area is essentially a watertight tub, the skipper had no way of knowing until it reached the level of the cutout in the face of the galley.

I prefer a more obvious warning. When he steps in the cabin and ends up with water up to his ankles he will get the message. I recommend owners of older boats make a similar hole, being careful not to drill into the water tank.

One owner said cleaning up bilge water on the sole is messy.

A company video shows that, will full ballast tanks, the boat is self righting. With 120 lbs. of pressure on the jib halyard, the mast lay in the water, and immediately popped upright when the halyard was released; MacGregor said the limit of positive stability is about 115.

MacGregor also claims the boat has positive flotation; the same video shows a boat still floating that is filled with water halfway up the cockpit floor. Flotation is Styrofoam blocks in the cockpit coaming, bow, and under the anchor locker.

As weve written before, water ballast doesn’t produce as stiff a boat as lead, but because you can drain it on the ramp (or dump it underway going 8 knots or faster), you don’t have to tow it down the road.

The centerboard is hollow with drain holes, the bottom of which is filled with resin. It weighs 25 lbs., compared to 600 lbs. in the original 26. The board retracts into the hull, thus avoiding potential damage while launching and loading.

Access to deck hardware and wires is via liner plugs mounted throughout the boat; access to the motor mount and rudder mount are through a hatch in the stern.

The mast is a 7/8 fractional rig with swept-back spreaders and two shrouds; spreaders are mounted in sockets on the mast, an improvement over the original 26. MacGregor constructs the spar from 3″ x 4″ extrusions with wall thicknesses of 1/8″. Standing rigging is 1/8″ 7 x 19 wire on the stays, and 5/32″ 1 x 19 for the shrouds.

Despite criticism that the rigging is too light, MacGregor said, These rigs just don’t come down.

Chainplates are bolted through the hull with stainless steel bolts, washers and nuts. They are strong enough that during construction they are used to remove the hull from the mold;

Deck The cockpit and deck are typical of boats this size; however, there are no side decks so movement forward is over the cabintop. There are lifelines running from the stern pulpit to the base of the bow pulpit; owners with small children would be well-advised to install safety netting at the bow.

Deck hardware consists of two Lewmar #6 winches and cam cleats for the centerboard and furler lines, vang and halyard, located atop the cabin. The centerboard raises easily from the cockpit.

The helm is a movable seat on the transom behind a steering pedestal; cockpit seats are more than 6′ long, and wide enough to be comfortable for most adults.

Because of its size, the small stainless steel steering wheel looks out of place in the cockpit; however, it is reachable from the helmsmans seat, or the rail.

The mainsheet terminates at a padeye atop a stainless steel pipe inside the pedestal. Though the mainsheet arrangement is convenient to the helmsman, we think a sailor intent on proper sail shape will be frustrated.

MacGregor disagrees. The vang (a $69 option) will control the leech adequately.

The boat is equipped with twin rudders, which improves handling when heeled, and provides space on the transom for up to a 50-hp. motor. The rudders raise easily with ropes cleated on the transom.

The motor is raised electrically from controls on the steering pedestal. One boat we inspected had the cables hidden under a polypropylene strip on the cockpit sole, and on another boat they were led through a hole in the side of the cockpit aft through the stern.

A stainless steel rod attached to the rudders and the front of the motor allows moving them simultaneously.

We were alarmed at the location of the factory-installed stern ladder, which is mounted between the port rudder and the engine, close enough to the engine propeller to be a hazard. Todd McChesney of Bluewater Yachts in Seattle, with whom we sailed, installs a ladder fabricated in Seattle that is mounted outboard of the rudder, a better alternative.

Accommodations The area belowdecks feels spacious, a reflection of the 90″ beam, lack of bulkheads or visual intrusions, shiny gelcoat surfaces that are devoid of any wood trim, and reasonable headroom. The company advertises standing headroom. We measured 510″ headroom at the foot of the companionway, but theres less amidships.

Accommodations include a king-sized berth below the cockpit, galley and two settees to port, head and dinette to starboard, and V-berth large enough for two adults.

Though the boat is advertised as having sleeping accommodations for six, MacGregor says thats two too many. The aft berth measures 90″ x 78″, and has enough headroom to use the hull as a backrest. The forward V-berth is 76″ wide at the head, and the dinette converts to a double that measures 80″ long and 41″ wide.

Except for a smoked Plexiglas door enclosing the head, the entire area is wide open, so privacy curtains fore and aft would be high on our list of additions.

The dinette is elevated, providing virtually 360 sight lines through fixed ports, forward hatches and the companionway hatch-a good touch. The table, which is nearly 36 inches square, has a clever feature-a clear acrylic insert flush with the surface of the table under which a chart can be placed. The aft dinette seat is 41″ wide and 18″ deep; the forward seat is slightly smaller.

Stowage below the forward seat extends to the V-berth, and stowage for a removable 48-quart ice chest is located below the aft seat.

The head is marginally large enough to allow showering. It is 25″ wide, 40″ long, and has 57″ of headroom. The only furnishings are a molded sink, small storage area, and a mirror on the bulkhead. A porta-potty is equipped with a holding tank.

The galley is quite small. Counter space consists of several 4″ x 5″ ceramic tiles, a molded fiberglass sink with a freshwater faucet, and cutout for an optional two-burner stove. The galley could use more stowage.

The finish of stowage areas isn’t great; we found rough surfaces on the hull as well as fiberglass shards that can produce cuts.

Performance We tested the boat on a dead calm day so were able to try her agility under power. We had to rely on owner comments for input about sailing characteristics.

Because of its high profile and hull shape, upwind performance is average at best. Most owners opt for a CDI roller furler, a $495 option.

I usually allow 95-105 for a tack, the owner said. Absolute perfect sailing is in 10-15 knots of wind on a close reach. Ive sailed the boat in as much as 35 knots with reduced sail.

Gene Arena, a dealer who has represented MacGregor in San Francisco since 1968, said the boats fare well in the bays gusty, lumpy conditions.

We have to reef this boat sooner than a typical 25′ keel boat, he said, but even novices learn to sail the boat quickly. We typically put the first reef in when wind speed reaches 15-20 knots; when wind speed exceeds 25 knots we tuck in the second reef and reduce the headsail to 65%.

The calculated jib sheeting angle is 11, but Arena said, I don’t think this boat points as well as the old 26 because it has more windage and a different hull shape, so the best bet is to foot off 10.

An owner who sails regularly on San Francisco Bay said, My wife and I sail the boat regularly in 20-knot winds with no problems. With a reef in the main, shes stable and sails well, heeling about 15. But Id never take her into blue water.

Another owner, who sails off the coast of Northern California, said, We typically have 15-20-knot winds, and long 8′-10′ swells, which she handles easily. I think this is an outstanding boat. I was knocked over 50 by a 40-mile per hour gust, and she popped right up and nothing broke.

A Puget Sound sailor, who said he usually sails the boat under shortened sail, records speeds of 8 knots on a broad reach with the genoa. I also like the fact that the bigger motor allows me to fight the heavy current we experience in the Northwest, he said.

The PHRF handicap is between 240 and 250.

MacGregor claims top speed under power exceeds 20 knots, which we confirmed on our test with a boat powered by a 50-hp. outboard. A 9.9-hp. will push the boat at 6-7 knots, a 25-hp. at 12-14 knots. Most buyers opt for the 50-hp. motor. But the added weight of the big outboard has its downside. One owner said, The boat ends up with too much weight aft with 180-230 pounds of motor on the stern, ballast tank, gas tanks, and passengers.

In addition to straight-ahead speeds, we made 360 turns at 18 knots with relative ease and noted that the boat stays relatively flat. In choppy seas, the flat bottom could be expected to pound.

As for its seaworthiness, Roger MacGregor said, The 26 was designed for typical small cruising boat use-inland waters and limited coastal sailing. It is too small to be a long-distance passagemaker. It wont hold enough gear and supplies, and the long-term, day-after-day motion of a small, light sailboat can be tough on the crew.

There are thousands of these boats out there, and many have been caught in, and survived, some really extreme weather conditions, on both lakes and oceans. Like most small cruising sailboats, the 26 can handle high winds and nasty seas, but risk and discomfort levels increase dramatically in severe weather. To maximize fun and safety, most of our owners wisely keep a watchful eye on the weather and try to avoid severe conditions.

Conclusion Theres no question MacGregor is building an inexpensive product that sells for $4,000-$6,000 less than its primary competitors. The list price for boat, sails and trailer is $14,995 FOB the factory. Genoa and gear, roller furling, cruising spinnaker, vang, mast raising system, stove, cushions and transportation jump the price to $17,000; add $5,000-$7,000 for engine and electronics.

They also enjoy relatively high resale. Two-year-old boats on the market are selling for 85%-90% of their original prices.

The owner of a recent model sums it up well, She is fast enough to be pleasurable, forgiving enough that I can be stupid, balanced enough that I can be lazy.

The two-year warranty covers all parts manufactured by MacGregor.

I’d like to add that my MacGregor 26 M has as much room as some 35 footers. I bought it new in 2006 and I will never tire of it! It is the “Jeep” of sailboats, it can float in 12″ of water, and can drive right up on the beach. With a 4-stroke Merc 60 hp, she’ll do 21 mph fully loaded (actually overloaded). She’ll get up on a plane and you’re gone, baby! And at terrific fuel mileage. She sails ok but you won’t win any races, however it wins points being able to sail on a beautiful sunset evening, with nothing but music and no engine noise. She is amazing and people are curious to see how it functions and love it. In Puget Sound the weather changes quickly, but you can get home or back to safe harbor lickity-split, Thank you Roger MacGregor! Mike Jones “Antares”

There is so much information to read I’m wondering if the information to be processed is still relevant. I learn so much about the Mac Gregor 26. This sailboat sounds to amazing to be true in todays market prices. Just starting to to research and there are a lot of older ones out there for sale. Millions dollar question -wait and get new or get old to learn as I go knowing a boat will be more costly so I have to have some throw-away cash on the side

The Difference WHAT MAKES 26 NORTH DIFFERENT

The old school.

The painful truth is that the brokerage you have chosen to list your yacht may be as outdated as the suits they are wearing. Many of our competitors are still operating in the dark ages, showing a remarkable lack of vision and creativity in showcasing your yacht online.

Stale Brands

While traditional, well-recognized brokerages names may seem to hold the key to selling your yacht quickly, they are in fact the opposite, as they frantically scramble, unsuccessfully, to keep up with modern marketing methods forged in the Internet era.

The New School

But don’t take our word for it, just review a few marketing examples below which illustrate WHY your yacht is not being represented in the best possible light online. It’s US versus THEM and we believe the choice is clear.

3 hospitalized after knife attack on party boat in New York City along Brooklyn waterfront

NEW YORK — A knife attack on a crowded party boat at a New York City pier Saturday resulted in the hospitalization of three people, police said.

A 911 call came in around 5 p.m. reporting the assault along the Brooklyn waterfront near 58th Street and the Brooklyn Army Terminal warehouse, NYPD Detective Sophia Mason said.

The victims were said to be a 32-year-old man with a stab wound to the torso, a 40-year-old man with stab wounds to the chest and abdomen and a 28-year-old man who was hit in the head with a bottle. They were taken to the NYU Langone Hospital and were in stable condition, Mason said.

Two more people were treated for injuries at the scene, but they declined further medical treatment, according to the fire department.

There were no arrests as of Saturday evening and the investigation was ongoing.

Around 3,000 people were aboard the vessel, the Cornucopia Majesty, at the time, police said. An event called BYFAROnABoat, which had advertised daytime and nighttime parties on the boat boarding at the Brooklyn Army Terminal on Saturday, said in a statement posted on social media that a “crime scene developed by the pier.” As a result, the night event was postponed.

“BYFAR Entertainment has always been a beacon of safe events in New York City and this rare occurrence has never been the norm with us,” the statement said.

The pier at the army terminal, a former military supply base that houses industrial businesses, is used by the city's ferry service and private vessels.

Party cruises are a fixture in the waters off New York City in the warmer months, typically carrying DJs playing to large crowds as they take in views of the Statue of Liberty and Manhattan skyline. The city in the past has moved to restrict where and how late they can dock on the southern Brooklyn waterfront, following complaints from some area residents.
