The yacht broker certification program sets a performance baseline for professional yacht brokers nationwide. As a CPYB Endorsed Brokerage, Eastern Yachts brokers have passed the National Yacht Broker Certification exam, which tested their ability and competency in several skill areas or are enrolled in the Apprentice program. Certified Brokers must maintain their certification by participating in 30 credit hours of industry training over three year intervals.

The CPYB designation provides yacht brokers nationwide with a new benchmark for measuring their skills, abilities, performance and ethics. Boat sellers and buyers are now in a better position to select qualified, competent yacht brokers.

The 22 Sisu is legendary among Downeast hulls. Sisu is a Finnish word that means stamina, fortitude, and “guts”. This little beauty is aptly named. Originally drawn by Royal Lowell in the 1970s, her basic design is arguably the most seaworthy ever for a small powerboat. Modern composite materials plus a couple of design tweaks have made her even better. Recessed chines damp spray and add dynamic lift to her round chines as she accelerates, while an outboard bracket bolted to her transom frees up an outrageous amount of space in her cockpit.

Choose a traditional framed “bassboat” windshield with Bimini top at the helm or an open-sided hardtop pilothouse. On deck, the only fixtures are helm and companion pedestal seats mounted on storage boxes that double as aft-facing lower seats. The rest of the cockpit can accommodate a full-transom fishbox with a cushioned seat on top, a couple of folding chairs, or a portable livewell. The open pilothouse offers shelter from sun and weather, with optional roll-down sides and mounting space for “rocket launcher” rod holders. The cabin offers 6-foot-9-inch V-berths with a portable toilet (pumpout available) and 5-feet-9-inches of headroom. Performance is strong with a 115-hp four-stroke outboard.

Field Reports: Northern pike suppression work to begin

Crews are beginning to net northern pike in Lake Spokane this week as part of annual efforts to control the invasive fish in Eastern Washington. 

Staci Lehman, a spokesperson for the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife, said in an email Tuesday that the annual effort begins this week and will continue through June, with netting operations taking place on Lake Spokane, Lake Roosevelt and in the Pend Oreille River. 

Northern pike are a non-native, predatory fish that can have major impacts on other fish populations. They can grow to more than 45 pounds and live more than 20 years.

The fish were introduced into rivers in Montana in the 1950s that drain into the Columbia River basin. They were also introduced into the Coeur d’Alene drainage in the 1970s. 

Since then, the fish have expanded downstream, according to WDFW, and officials have been trying to limit their spread into Washington. They have been found in the Pend Oreille, Spokane and upper Columbia drainages in the eastern part of the state. 

They have also been introduced to Lake Washington in King County and a pond on San Juan Island.

WDFW works with the Spokane Tribe of Indians and the Confederated Tribes of the Colville Reservation to control pike on Lake Roosevelt and the Kalispel Tribe on the Pend Oreille River to kill the fish with gillnets. 

The work on Lake Spokane will happen mostly between the McLellan Conservation Area and Nine Mile Recreation Area, Lehman said. In April, the work will shift toward Lake Roosevelt as water temperatures warm. 

The goal of suppression efforts is to limit the impact of the pike and stymie their potential distribution into the part of the Columbia that’s home to salmon and steelhead, which is downstream of Grand Coulee Dam. 

Earlier this month, WDFW  released a northern pike response plan that details how fisheries officials would deal with pike showing up in new places. 

Washington plans public meeting on salmon, steelhead seasons

Fisheries managers will hold a public meeting next week in Clarkston to discuss the next round of salmon and steelhead seasons in central and eastern Washington. 

The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife said in a news release that the meeting will be held March 27 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Clarkston campus of Walla Walla Community College at 1470 Bridge Street. 

Attendance will be in-person only. 

The meeting is part of the annual North of Falcon salmon season-setting process. It will focus on the fisheries in Snake River and the Columbia River upstream of McNary Dam.

WDFW officials will present salmon forecasts and their season proposals, and they’ll take public comment.

Climate change has an industrial-sized problem. The factories that produce everything from vehicles to chemicals will be America’s largest source of greenhouse gas emissions by 2035.  

In California, industry is the second-highest emitting economic sector , responsible for nearly a quarter of our greenhouse gas emissions. Our power sector is one of America’s cleanest, and our zero-emission vehicle requirements will dramatically cut transportation emissions. That makes industry the largest remaining hurdle to achieving our net-zero emissions target set by the 2022 California Climate Crisis Act .

Achieving our climate goals requires ambitious government policy to ensure clean industrial technologies are deployed on factory floors, reward innovative manufacturing, and build domestic markets for clean industrial products. California has pioneered several forward-thinking policies, but we can build on these to become a clean industrial leader and achieve zero-carbon industry.

For instance, the state Legislature should set a date after which newly installed industrial equipment may produce no emissions from fossil fuel combustion, akin to California requiring newly sold cars and light trucks to produce no emissions by 2035 .

2017’s Buy Clean California Act mandated state infrastructure projects prioritize steel, glass and insulation produced using low-emissions processes. The state Legislature should extend this program to additional building materials like cement, concrete and aluminum.

California should expand low-cost financing access to help manufacturers switch to clean processes. An industrial decarbonization program through the California Infrastructure and Economic Development Bank could provide incentives without worsening our budget deficit since financing is ultimately repaid and can come from the private sector through credit enhancements or bond sales. Meanwhile, policies to improve product longevity and quality like right-to-repair and extended producer responsibility rules can reduce waste, making the transition to clean industry faster and cheaper.

These straightforward steps would help accelerate the deployment of technologies such as green hydrogen, renewable electricity, energy and material efficiency, and electrified heating in the industrial sector. Electrical technologies like industrial heat pumps, electric resistance heaters, electric arcs and electromagnetic induction can provide the heat needed by industry, and some can achieve temperatures higher than fossil fuel combustion- — more than hot enough for any industrial process. Rolled out nationally, these technologies could slash U.S. carbon dioxide pollution by 620 million metric tons per year, equivalent to taking 138 million gasoline-powered cars off the roads or retiring 1,558 natural gas-fired power plants.

Past experience shows California can be a policy trendsetter. After California enacted its Buy Clean law, six other states enacted their own clean procurement policies, and President Biden followed suit in 2021, launching a federal Buy Clean initiative for nationwide green public procurement using the U.S. government’s annual $630 billion purchasing power.

Last August, the California Building Standards Commission established emissions limits on manufacturing materials for large commercial and school buildings. We’re the first U.S. state to consider these “embodied” emissions in our building codes.

The benefits are huge. Clean industrial technologies could prevent the 400-900 deaths, 13,000 asthma attacks, and 65,000 lost workdays currently caused by California’s industrial emissions annually. Investments in modern manufacturing technologies would grow our economy. And our communities would be safer if we cut the pollution causing wildfires, drought, and other extreme weather.

From steel fabricated without coal, to beer brewed without natural gas , to cement that sequesters carbon , an industrial revolution is unfolding. It’ll change how we make everything; it could help solve the climate crisis; and it’s happening here in California.
