Create your individual superyacht.

Our Y9 is unique and so is every single Y9. Above all, she is as individual as our customers themselves, because her layout and equipment are completely variable. Complementing this, the Y9 offers the volume of a 100-foot yacht in 90 feet. And she is available in three exciting versions – Y9, Y9 Pilot House, Y9 Custom.

The main focus for Y9 owners is spending time with family and friends on board. As a result, the 90-foot carbon sailing yacht is easy to sail even with a small crew. Her interior design fulfills and even extends all owners' wishes for a family yacht with sufficient privacy while they travel the world. Of course, the Y9 can also prove her potential on regatta courses in the Mediterranean or the Caribbean and sail right at the front of the field. She will be a formidable opponent in any regatta.

Like all YYachts, the Y9 follows a clear design philosophy - reducing all unnecessary superstructure and components to create a clean and minimalist deck: Keep it simple. Look good and sail nicely.

BRINGS IMMEASURABLE JOY TO ITS OWNER

The luxury of being able to set out to sea self-sufficiently and with confidence is priceless. Even more enjoyable, is a comfortable, high performance and seaworthy yacht that sails fast and looks cool. Our Y9 delivers that in a way no other yacht can.

Y9 sailing yacht - space for your ideas, your y9. your layout..

The spaciousness of a 100ft yacht was achievable on the Y9 in 90ft by implementing many years of expertise in design and construction. The owner is provided the highest level of privacy with his own apartment; dependent upon the configuration, up to three additional suites are available for guests. Considerable importance was given to the design of the crew area, after all an unwritten rule in yachting is “happy crew, happy owner”.

There are various layouts available for the Y9 in addition to numerous interior furnishing options. The YYachts team will work with each owner to personalize their interior. You may also select your own interior designer for the project.

GRACIOUS SPACE FOR FAMILYAND FRIENDS

The Y9 Pilot House is the second version of the Y9 category and features a striking deckhouse that offers a very bright salon and phenomenal views at the sea. The layout of the Y9 Pilot House is optimized for families and friends to enjoy extensive cruising. Andrew Winch and his experienced team designed a sophisticated atmosphere below deck.

scaled to human dimensions

The Y9 is perfectly scaled to human dimensions and activities by eliminating exaggerated exterior and interior lines and proportions, as well as ineffectual spaces that are difficult to manage and maintain. Ensuring the owner remains connected to the sea and onboard guest with minimal distractions.

Perfect view to the sea

Several guest and crew cabin options are available for the Y9 Pilot House. The distinctive coach roof floods the salon with abundant daylight, which also boasts 360° views of the sea. This coach roof design is not only an aesthetic element, but also helps to reduce overheating below deck by deflecting the rays of the warming sun and minimizing the energy required to keep the interior cool in hot climates. This is just one of the aspects defining the Y9 as a sustainable yacht.

The Y9 custom

Completely individual 90 feet from YYachts

We can also start a 90-foot yacht with a white piece of paper and implement a design that has never existed before – you will receive a yacht which is yours and only yours.

The latest example of the capabilities of our Custom Division is the YC Tripp 90, a 30-metre carbon sloop with an exterior designed by American Naval Architect Bill Trippand an interior by Winch Design, a renowned leading superyacht designer based in London.  The owner is an experienced yachtsman who wants to alternate bluewater comfortable navigation with performance-oriented experiences. Discover the YC/Tripp90 here and see videos, exterior and interior pictures.

y9 yacht for sale

At YYachts, we have been working tirelessly to create a high-performance yacht with best-in-class interiors and exteriors that provide spatial volumes equal to those found in 100-foot superyachts. Michael Schmidt’s “concept of freedom” design philosophy involved clearing the boat from all unnecessary rigging, lines, and structural elements to create a clear and minimalist deck. The Y9 is the culmination of our pursuit of that grand vision of simplicity. The 90-foot flagship with the volume of a 100-footer.

Technical Data

Loa: 89'10", beam: 22'4", draft: 15'5", virtual tour.

With a length of 27.40 m, the Y9 presents the same volume of a 100ft yacht. The exterior design and naval architecture was drawn by Bill Tripp while the interior is the result of a styling by Norm Architects and the experience of Design Unlimited.

According to YYachts founder Michael Schmidt, several discussions with owners were decisive for the development of the Y9: "Actually, customers were interested in 100 feet in length. With our expertise, we have implemented the comfort of a 100-foot yacht on a length of 90 feet. With our new Y9 we are entering the super yacht segment.”

The Y9 generates an incomparable volume due to her transversely arranged tender garage in the stern and even has a separate owner's apartment which consists of a private saloon, a dressing room, a bedroom and a bathroom with double washbasin including a separate shower. A maximum of privacy is guaranteed, which the owner can enjoy with family or close friends.

As all YYachts models, the Y9 is built completely from carbon fibre optimizing performance and making her extremely competitive.

We wanted to push the bounderies there a little bit. We love when we have these different details that you dont only want to look at, but also touch and feel. All these various small details alltogether creates that calm and refined really good feeling that it should be to be on the boat.

The spaciousness of a 100ft yacht was achievable on the Y9 in 90ft by implementing many years of design expertise and a clever construction method. For example, the owner is provided the highest level of privacy with his own suite, including a separate salon, dressing room, and bedroom with en-suite bathroom and separate shower. Dependent upon the configuration, up to three additional cabins are available for guests. Considerable importance was given to the design of the crew area, after all an unwritten rule in yachting is “happy crew, happy owner”. Therefore the crew aboard the Y9 reside in spacious cabins with their own lounge.

There are various layouts available for the Y9 in addition to numerous interior furnishing options. The YYachts team will work with each owner to personalize their interior or you may select your own interior designer for the project.

YYachts Y9 review: new sweet spot of superyachting

  • Toby Hodges
  • October 20, 2023

The ability to get sailing quickly, easily and enjoyably is what makes the Y9 so appealing, says Toby Hodges after sailing Bella

Product Overview

Time. You may not be able to buy it, but some may be fortunate enough to buy the things that let you use it most efficiently. It was mid afternoon on a sweltering day in late June, Mallorca. I’d just come ashore from the Superyacht Cup Palma . With the rush hour traffic looming, roadworks stifling the city centre and the oppressive heat, there was surely no chance of any meaningful sail on the new Y9 that day, as it was located in Port Adriano, 25km along the coast.

Hitching a ride on Ulli’s (YYachts’s Hans-Ulrich Heisler) unnervingly powerful moped, we weaved through the city, avoided the motorway standstill and tailback and arrived at the Philippe Starck-designed marina within half an hour to be welcomed by Bella ’s crew, ready to depart.

Just 15 minutes later we were out of the marina and hoisting full sail via push buttons in a perfect Force 4 evening breeze. Bella heeled onto her wide powerful lines and we were straight into double figures, sailing at 10 knots in 13.

I was slightly dazzled by it all, and certainly impressed. This is no 25ft daysailer, rather a contemporary superyacht and yet the speed and ease with which we could get sailing with minimal fuss yet maximum pleasure is quite something.

However, this should perhaps come as no surprise to anyone familiar with Michael Schmidt’s background. A veteran racing sailor, his esteemed boatbuilding career is latterly built on making large yachts fun but crucially manageable to sail short-handed.

He saw a gap in the market to create premium yachts in the 70-100ft sector, built in series production to help offer value. His YYachts yard build light and fast carbon sandwich yachts with a ‘keep it simple’ philosophy. They are the creation of top designers, who are tasked with ensuring they look good, sail well, and are easily handled.

A furling padeye for a code sail and bowsprit for a 780m2 gennaker provide options to further increase sail power. Photo: YYachts

The Y9 has a 90ft Bill Tripp-designed modern hull shape with the volume of a 100-footer, and is also available as a Pilot House and a Custom version (which we saw last year in the stunning Prevail with its prominent squared deck house).

Bella launched in time for the Cannes Boat Show last autumn, and as I soon discovered when skipper Iloy Van Berk offered me the wheel, it boasts credible sailing merits: performance, handling and tangible enjoyment on the helm. Yes, this is a comparatively lightweight (55 tonne lightship) performance design for enjoyable, fast sailing, with a lofty mast and formidable sail area. But it’s also a luxury cruising yacht with voluminous tanks, stowage, comfort systems and twin engines.

Not that I could detect drag during our sail. The twin rudders gave assured control, with direct connection to the wheel, and the yacht felt stiff and nicely balanced.

Van Berk and his partner Elvira Estrany run a slick ship and keep Bella ready to go on short notice. Having worked for these owners for seven years, they know what they like and how to be prepared for them. While the Y9 is designed to accommodate four crew, Bella runs with three, which the skipper puts down to Elvira, ‘a superstar’ who cooks, cleans and sails/does deckhand work. “The boat design also allows us to handle it with three people,” he continues. “With the magic trim I can work the sheets. And the gennaker is on a furler – it has to be at 800m2!”

His point was proven when we went to tack… and no-one needed to do anything. It’s a one person affair. I brought the main in a little at the push of a button and the self-tacking jib sorted itself out. The combination of this headsail, a staysail option and a bowsprit that can take a hydraulic furling code sail, helps make such a large yacht easy to handle.

Wide aft sections provide power and volume. A generous sail plan allows for enjoyable sailing in single figure winds, but the Y9 also felt stiff and stable in breeze. The push-button mainsheet is kept clear, led from the bimini arch through the boom. Photo: YYachts

According to designer Bill Tripp, it aids the Y9 to “sail well in blue water in the worst conditions and have light air performance to attract the keenest of sailors.”

When we cracked sheets to a beam reach, our average speed increased to 11.5-12 knots, and we clocked 12.5 in 16-18. Not bad figures for white sails cruising! And then the dolphins joined us to dance with and surf our bow waves. It was that kind of evening: gold standard sailing.

Secrets to simplicity

While we’ve talked about sail handling being key to the Y9’s ease of use, there is also the ease of manoeuvring, which we’ll come to, and the hull stability which help make it inviting for a broad spectrum of sailing experience.

The decks may be wide and flat, but the heel angle remained moderate. “The flared topsides allow for great deck spaces and added stability, a win-win that leads to a better boat,” Tripp explained. “Hull shape is optimised for 15° of heel, which is the most typical when globe-trotting.”

Bella ’s shakedown sail was a delivery trip from the Greifswald yard to Mallorca – in 12 days. That’s an average of over 9 knots or 288 mile days, and includes two stops for swell/supplies/rest! Sustained speeds in the low double figures are what this long powerful shape and generous sail area brings.

So there is pace on tap but it needs to be measured. When the wind reached 15 knots or more, I noted how Van Berk eased the mainsheet. Although Bella has clocked 25 knots before, the skipper says he prefers to keep it below 12 knots otherwise the loads shoot up.

Performance cruising

While the Y9 has a performance hull shape and build, and could well suit superyacht regatta racing, Bella is very much set up for cruising, with the corresponding payload and gear aboard. The twin engines, genset, dual watermakers etc, (as well as solar and hydro renewable energy) gives the yacht multiple power sources and redundancy.

The renewables help allow for a silent ship at night. The twin drives and joystick-controlled thrusters also help offer better manoeuvrability in port and promote motorsailing efficiency. In light breeze Van Berk runs the leeward engine at 1,800rpm (for just one litre of diesel per hour), which creates enough apparent wind to sail at over 9 knots.

The power set up and ease of manoeuvrability all help make for an easy to use yacht.

“Our thought is to also attract new people to the sport and to tug people out of powerboats into something far more interesting,” said Tripp.

Plenty of power and a direct feel on the wheel provides a compelling experience for Toby. Photo: YYachts

Bella ’s owner is a case in point as he previously had a Sunseeker 75 motorboat. Wanting to get into sailing he bought the first Y7 in build (also called Bella , which we sailed in 2019 ), on the understanding YYachts would build him a 90-footer as it scaled up. Despite he and his family having made so many happy memories on the Sunseeker, after just two weeks sailing the Y7 he confided to his skipper that he couldn’t believe he had ever had a powerboat. The owner now particularly likes long daysails, typically 100-200 miles from port to port.

This helps explain the fixed bimini and the shelter that provides to the vast cockpit. It also supports 5kW of solar panels on the roof. The bimini concept came from Van Berk after a scare on the previous Y7 when the skipper was struck in the head and knocked flat by the mainsheet while sailing off Corsica. Hence he lobbied for an arch for the mainsheet on the Y9. “Once we had that, it made sense to go for a hard bimini and the solar panels,” he explained. “It’s super comfortable, I love it.”

y9 yacht for sale

The captive mainsheet is led from a single point on the bimini through a Cariboni hydraulic cylinder system in the Park Avenue boom, which not only keeps the mainsheet out of the cockpit and harm’s way, but allows for instant push-button control of the substantial mainsail from either pedestal.

Elsewhere Bella is kept relatively simple on deck with rod rigging for the carbon rig and halyards run neatly through the coachroof to two winches by either wheel.

So what are the downsides? Some may not like the fixed bimini look – but that’s obviously an option, which I consider to be a highly practical one. Solar field apart, sailing in upwards of 30ºC soon makes you seek shelter, while a sprayhood can also connect to the bimini.

Then there are the flat wide decks, which aren’t easy to negotiate in a pitching sea. As mentioned on previous YYachts designs, the expansive aft deck has its merits but it does present a long distance between the wheels or those aft winches that can be unnerving at heel. The majority of the aft deck hinges open to reveal the tender garage, so it would be difficult to install fixed structures on the deck, although there are handles on the pedestal and surrounding the crew companionway.

This YTender, which we have featured before, deserves another mention as Bella is the first yacht to carry one. The 4.35m carbon composite catamaran weighs just 230kg with a retractable electric drive to allow for beaching. It’s spacious, stable and designed to be the maximum size to fit in a large yacht garage. The YTender’s air tubes can be emptied or filled in just 45 seconds, reducing its beam by 30cm.

Plenty of choice

We’ve also featured the interior of Bella following a tour at its boat show debut, but when I reluctantly passed the helm over I had the chance to revisit below decks at heel where YYachts’ trademark sliding leather handrails came into good use to cross the saloon. It also felt noticeably calm. The yard uses an epoxy layer on the outer skin which it says helps with noise insulation.

y9 yacht for sale

‘Soft minimalism’ under sail, where YYachts’ trademark sliding hand rails come in handy in the wide saloon. Photo: YYachts

It also uses a semi-custom production process where the parts are finished outside of the hull, the furniture subcontracted. This helps allow for a variety of layout choices yet a high standard of finish for the price. There are five different layout options for the Y9 including the opposite to Bella ’s, with a full beam master suite aft and crew area and galley forward.

Owners can specify their own interior designers and in Bella ’s case, Norm Architects from Copenhagen were again the choice. The dark and smoked oak styling might seem a little urban to some but is designed to create a retreat, described as soft minimalism. It has the feel of the owner’s previous Y7, while his forward cabin features suede-covered wardrobes and leather panels. Practical features include the rounded fiddles, spacious machinery area and good crew accommodation with private access.

A question of time

Most owners are not typically going to use a superyacht for evening daysails (although YYachts new YBreeze concept is designed around such a mentality), however, our sail showed how achievable that is on the Y9. In an increasingly time-poor world, that could prove invaluable.

As we enjoyed a lovely fetch back towards the marina, still making easy speeds of 9.5-10 knots, I discussed the future cruising plans for Bella with her skipper. They aim to cross the Atlantic this autumn for a Caribbean season, before possibly going through Panama to Galapagos and then on up to Vancouver. The prospect of that latter leg instantly recalled one of my most memorable sails: the same passage on the same size boat by the same designer 20 years ago, when delivering the remarkable carbon ocean cruiser Shaman.

You have to hand it to Mr Tripp, he has a gift for drawing large yachts which are rewarding to sail and devour the miles with ease. Couple that with Schmidt’s boatbuilding knowledge, innovation and the ease of handling that he demands of such craft, and it’s clear to see why ‘Y’ represents the new sweet spot of superyachting.

Sail Universe

YYachts delivered the first new Flagship Y9

yyachts y9

YYachts delivered the first Y9. The new flagship of the German shipyard shows sporty lines, an enormous volume and a sophisticated interior.

The yard’s new flagship Y9 is born from the ambitious idea of building a lightweight masterpiece of craftsmanship following the company’s philosophy to reduce sailing to its essentials and serving all customer’s needs.

With a length of 29.71 m, the Y9 presents – due to clever construction and transverse garage in the aft – the same volume of a 100ft yacht with a private owners’ apartment to offer maximum privacy, comfortable guest cabins and a large and flexible crew area. The exterior design and naval architecture was drawn by Bill Tripp while the interior is the result of a styling by Norm Architects and the experience of Design Unlimited.

YYachts y9

As all YYachts models, the Y9 is built completely from carbon fibre optimizing performance and making her extremely competitive. With her length of 90 feet, the yacht has an interesting rating and is for sure able to win some trophies at the St Barths Bucket, the Superyacht Cup or the Maxi Rolex Cup. According to Zademack, several discussions with owners were decisive for the development of the Y9: “ Actually, customers were interested in 100 feet in length. However, from this size upwards – in my experience – yachts become disproportionately expensive because many custom-built components have to be installed. With our expertise, we have therefore implemented the comfort of a 100-foot yacht on a length of 90 feet. With our new Y9 we are entering the super yacht segment. ”

Happy crew, happy owner

The Y9 generates an incomparable volume due to her transversely arranged tender garage in the stern and even has a separate owner’s apartment which consists of a private office, a dressing room, a bedroom and a bathroom with double washbasin including a separate shower and a separate toilet. A maximum of privacy is guaranteed, which the owner can enjoy with family or close friends.

Y8 Custom

Great importance was also given to the design of the crew area. As it is an unwritten law in yachting “Happy crew, happy owner”, the crew cabins on the Y9 have been designed extra large, with well thought-out storage space and an additional crew lounge. The captain’s cabin can be converted into a saloon during the day, for example – rooms on the Y9 do not have to have a single predefined purpose. Following this concept, the interior layout options can be customized with the YYachts design department to satisfy all customer’s desires and to preserve the exclusive style of the boat. Incidentally, Y Yachts offers no fewer than five different layouts for the Y9. And it is available on request as a Pilot Saloon version and as a Y9 Custom with almost unlimited freedom of choice when it comes to design.

YYachts y9

The interior of the first Y9 was jointly developed by two design studios. Norm Architects from Copenhagen and Design Unlimited from Lymington combined their architectural and yachting experience and created a Scandinavian elegant look for the Y9 that follows the principle of “soft minimalism” – oiled oak and grey fabrics and panels determine the colour palette.

Katrine Goldstein, Managing Director of Norm Architects, says: “ The Y9 already follows the award-winning Y7 in its design, but is much more complex and goes deeper. The Y9 will also be a luxurious retreat to get away from the constant stimulation that our everyday lives bring. To support an overall exclusive look and feel throughout the interior, only essential yet thoughtful, luxurious bespoke elements take up space where needed, to achieve a pared back interior with room for the life lived within. The wooden, paneled walls and curved interior elements in oak add a warm, organic feel to the space, while optically stretching the space vertically to make the rooms appear more spacious. Sliding doors and inbuilt storage effortlessly blend in with the architectural framework of the boat, with no disruptive elements. ” Great importance was also attached to a quiet yacht. To achieve this, YYachts engaged the noise consultants from Van Cappellen. “You sleep like a baby on board”, comments Dirk Zademack.

26 knots to Cannes

On deck, the Y-flagship pleases with its sheer walkways and the division of the cockpit areas common on such formats: Guests are accommodated in front, while the crew works aft. The mainsheet is nowhere to be found. It is centered on the bimini top and hidden in the Park Avenue main boom. To adjust or set the sails, to fetch the kicker or the luff, all it takes is the push of a button, which is why such a 29.71-meter cruiser can even be sailed by two people. Its performance potential is impressive: the hull speed is beyond twelve knots. The main alone measures 242 square meters of sail area, the gennaker catches the wind on 617 square meters. On the passage, speeds of 26 knots were reached, the captain reports. From Greifswald to Cannes took only eleven days, up to 240 nautical miles were mastered in 24 hours. A crew of four was necessary; in cruising and owner mode, two crew members – captain and stewardess – are usually permanently on board.

Catamaran as tender

The garage of the new Y9 contains another highlight of the yacht – the brand new YTender. Like the mother ship, it is built of carbon composite and weighs just 230 kilograms at a length of 4.35 meters. Designed as a catamaran, the Y-tender is stable in the water and its hydrodynamics make it very efficient underway. It is available with both a conventional outboard and an electric drive; both can be retracted, allowing the Y-tender to land directly on the beach. Its layout is designed to be flexible, as is the equipment and decoration. The Y-Tender’s air hose can be emptied or filled in just 45 seconds. When empty, this reduces the width of the tender by 30 centimeters, resulting in a better pack size. The necessary electric pumps are integrated into the Y-tender. The dinghy is built entirely in Germany, ensuring a high level of vertical integration. YYachts’ keep-it-simple philosophy also applies here: a yacht must be reduced to what is necessary without restricting comfort.

Designer’s comment – Bill Tripp – Exterior and Naval Architecture

“When Michael Schmidt and I first talked he asked for a boat that you would immediately want to sail at first sight, that embodies modern beauty, simplicity, performance and ease of use, along with the capability to go anywhere. Michael identified that many yachts in the 70–100ft range are built as a one-off and there was an opportunity to present a world class yacht built in series through process engineering.

We have worked with MSY to design a series of boats that are constructed from the best materials in a production process that is based on the assembly of parts already finished outside of the boat. This increases the ease of making a highly finished boat with a level of flexibility in the configuration of the spaces. The result is a high-end series that is not only appealing, but obtainable.

YYachts Y9

Our thought is to also attract new people to the sport and to tug people out of powerboats into something far more interesting. The overarching principle is to keep the boat easy to use. Thus we have designed a boat that can comfortably be sailed by a few people. Equipped with a self-tacking jib, hydraulic furling code sail and staysail, these boats can sail well in blue water in the worst conditions and have light air performance to attract the keenest of sailors. The boats have two engines, a bow and stern thruster and joystick controls, making it easy to manoeuvre both when docking and sailing. They are built with identical structures in carbon/epoxy composite with twin rudders and fixed or telescoping keels. They cover a range of displacements with constant vertical and longitudinal centres of gravity, and bulbs and rig sizes designed and built to match the displacement and stability. The result is that the boats are well balanced between performance and luxury.

The first Y9 production result, Bella, comes with a hydro generation package from Oceanvolt, a large hard top bimini with 14sq m of solar panels, and an extensive battery package. These features will allow the boat to generate fossil fuel free energy both when sailing and moored.

I have no interest in designing boats that are cluttered or slow. The flared topsides allow for great deck spaces and added stability, a win-win that leads to a better boat. The hull shape is optimised for 15 degrees of heel which is the most typical when globe-trotting. This is also a good average for café racing as well as distance racing. The boat has a high prismatic form for highspeed ocean sailing, with a large sail plan that also makes sailing in six knots of breeze a realistic pleasure, a low centre of gravity to carry the sail plan and a moderate LCB location to improve sea keeping in waves.

The shape, while generally of a dinghy oriented lineage, is modified for sea-keeping and reduced slamming. The hull’s beam to depth ratio (known as BTR) is low to keep the hull shape from being a frying pan upwind in big ocean waves. The bow is finer than some for the same reason and keeping the prismatic high while doing this, and the LCB from going aft was a challenge that appealed to us. Designing a luxury yacht for extended series production is a unique task for a naval architect and means we must design the boat so that it can have different features in keeping with a client’s needs as well as be able to sail ably in different configurations to suit the owner’s mission. With a total of five different cabin configurations, the Y9 has something for everyone interested in this size boat.

This balanced combination of speed, reliability and comfort is ideal for an owner seeking a world cruising boat that will be fast in the fun regattas that have ascended in the last decade, at a price point that is unbeatable in today’s market.”

Legendary 36m J Class sailing yacht Shamrock V relaunched

The 1930s America's Cup challenger Shamrock V – also known as "The Queen of the J Class" – was relaunched today at Saxon Wharf in Southampton, UK (20 May). This follows the most comprehensive restoration and rebuild in her 94-year history.

The 36.4-metre sailing yacht sustained significant structural damage and was laid up ashore while racing at the America's Cup in 2017. Following a change of owner and a strip down "literally to the last bolt", the sailing yacht has been restored to concours condition after seven years.

The yacht hit the water at Camper & Nicholsons’ Gosport shipyard in 1930 as the first ever J Class, commissioned by Sir Thomas Lipton as his fifth and final challenge for the America's Cup. She remains the only one built in wood and the only one to have never fallen into dereliction since her launch – the other two remaining members of the J Class fleet, the 38.5-metre Velsheda and the 39.6-metre Endeavour , had to be reconstructed entirely.

Shamrock V will now be re-masted and undergo sea trials, commissioning, sail testing and race training. She is scheduled to move to the Mediterranean in July, when she will take part in some "informal events" in preparation for the America's Cup in October.

In modern race configuration, Shamrock carries over 743.2 square metres of sail and suits from North and Doyle. She will have a permanent crew of nine and will race with up to 45 crew dependent on wind and conditions.

Paul Spooner, who led the project team alongside Feargus Bryan, said: "It has been a massive undertaking and a huge privilege to unite extraordinary talents across the classic and superyacht communities. We were very fortunate to have a committed and knowledgeable owner who enabled us to fully and correctly restore this vital part of yachting history and prepare her for her next 100 years."

Chief shipwright, Giles Brotherton added: "It is very rare to be able to work on a revival of this scale and ambition. Some of our artisans were using hand tools that were used on Shamrock’s original build.  It is without doubt the biggest and arguably the most important yacht restoration in the world today."

Last year, BOAT International was invited to Southampton to see the refit in action.

Killer whales attack and sink sailing yacht in the Strait of Gibraltar — again

By Emily Mae Czachor

Updated on: May 14, 2024 / 4:54 PM EDT / CBS News

A sailing yacht sunk in the Strait of Gibraltar on Sunday after an unknown number of orcas  slammed into the vessel with two people on board and caused a water leak, officials said. Both crew members were rescued by a passing oil tanker, said Spain's maritime rescue service, marking the latest killer whale attack on a boat in what has become a pattern in recent years.

The incident happened at around 9 a.m. local time in the narrow strait between Spain and Morocco that has become a notorious site of human interactions with pods of killer whales that, for reasons still not fully understood, ram into boats and at times even sink them . In this case, crew members on board the SV Alboran Cognac yacht put out an emergency call for an evacuation after they encountered orcas roughly 14 miles off the coast of Cape Spartel.

The crew members reported feeling blows to the hull of the vessel and rudder, which was damaged by the whales, the rescue service said. The agency's coordination center in Tarifa, on the Spanish side of the Strait of Gibraltar, helped arrange for their evacuation via the tanker MT Lascaux. The tanker was able to collect the crew members from the sinking yacht within the hour, and they disembarked in Gibraltar before 10:30 a.m. They abandoned the SV Alboran Cognac, which proceeded to completely disappear into the ocean.

Anyone sailing through waters from the Gulf of Cádiz in southern Spain and the Strait of Gibraltar, either in a larger motorized vessel or a personal sailing boat, is advised to avoid certain areas that the maritime rescue service marks as potentially dangerous spots for orca interactions. The greatest threats exist between May and August, when officials say that pods of killer whales are most commonly seen in those parts of the Atlantic.

orca-interactions-maritime-rescue.jpg

But previously recorded incidents suggest those dangers may be present at any time. Last October, a Polish boat touring company reported that a pod of orcas had managed to sink one of its yachts after repeatedly slamming into the steering fin for 45 minutes, causing it to leak. Last June, two sailing teams competing in an international race around the world reported frightening scenarios in which multiple orcas rammed into or pushed up against their boats or as they sailed west of Gibraltar.

No one on board any of the vessels was hurt in those encounters, but the documented rise in confrontational behavior has researchers and sailors trying to determine why orcase have attempted to sink or capsize so many boats off the coasts of Spain and Portugal.

Some sailors have even resorted to blasting thrash metal music in a bid to deter the apex predators.

Reports of orcas interacting with humans have more than tripled in the last two years or so, according to the research group GTOA, which has documented hundreds of such incidents in the region since 2020. But some of the latest data points to possible changes in the orcas' etiquette, with the group reporting only 26 interactions in the Strait of Gibraltar and Bay of Biscay areas between January and May of this year. That number is 65% lower than the number of interactions recorded in the region over the same months last year, and 40% lower than the average number of interactions recorded in the same months between 2021 and 2023, according to GTOA.

‘Home Alone’ actor reveals fight to quintuple his salary for the sequel

Thanks for contacting us. We've received your submission.

Daniel Stern nearly lost out on co-starring as Marv the burglar in “Home Alone” and the sequel — by asking for more money.

The actor writes in his new memoir, “ Home and Alone ,” out Tuesday, that he was set to be paid $300,000 for six weeks work on the original 1990 movie.

But then, “I got a call saying they had redone the shooting schedule and they would now need me for eight weeks instead of six,” he writes. “They were asking me to add on 33% more shooting time, so I asked if they were going to raise my salary the same amount, and they said they would not.”

Producers hired a different actor to start rehearsals with Joe Pesci in Chicago — but, luckily for Stern, it didn’t work out.

A couple of days later Stern got a call that they wanted him back and would “honor the original contract and make the schedule six weeks.”

Relieved, he said he learned a valuable lesson from the near-disaster.

“It switches at some point where you go, ‘OK, I’m committed to the project,'” he told The Post. “If it takes 14 weeks, I’m going to miss the kid’s graduation because I committed to this. And so that was the lesson.

Macaulay Culkin, Joe Pesci and Daniel Stern in "Home Alone."

“Luckily I dodged the bullet of my stupidity and ended up in the movie.”

“Home Alone” grossed nearly $500 million worldwide — after costing just $18 million to make — leading Twentieth Century Fox to plan a sequel almost immediately.

According to the book, the film’s pint-sized star, Macaulay Culkin, had a sequel deal for $5 million plus 5% of the gross box office.

“So, I said, ‘Well, you know, this is going to be awesome,'” Stern told The Post.

It took producers six months to even make an offer of “$600,000, double my original salary, but not quite the pot of gold I was hoping for,” he writes. “I asked if that was the same as Joe [Pesci] was getting, and they said it was not.”

The studio eventually upped the offer to $800,000 but Stern discovered that Pesci was “getting somewhere between $2,000,000 and $3,000,000 plus gross percentage of the profits.”

He was determined to get at least half of what Pesci was making. So when Stern’s agent advised him to take the offer, the actor fired him.

Now, he admits it was a “prideful thing to do,” but he adds that, if that’s best his agent could do, “then he wasn’t very good at his job.”

Stern took over his own negotiations — by playing a game of chicken. He practically doubled his ask, shooting for $1.5 million and 2% of the gross profits.

The ploy went down to the wire until the then-head of Fox, Joe Roth, personally called and asked Stern to start filming without a contract.

In the end, the gambit played off: Stern got his asking salary and 1% of the gross.

“I knew they couldn’t do the movie without me, but I was also insecure, since I almost blew it the first time,” he writes. “I didn’t want to be too greedy when I loved the movie and the part so much.”
