Take a look at what architects pitch for a redesigned Cape Coral Yacht Club
N ew details, photos, and a video have emerged on the proposed changes to the Cape Coral Yacht Club Community Park, changing it from an Old Florida feel to a 'Key West' vibe.
The city plans to present these updates on the Yacht Club at this week's committee of the whole meeting at 9 a.m. Wednesday in council chambers at 1015 Cultural Park Blvd.
Here's what we know.
Yacht Club changes explained
Cape Coral's Yacht Club Community Park , which includes a yacht basin, tennis courts, a swimming pool, a ballroom, and a beach, has served as a popular attraction and staple for the city since the 1960s, built and open just a few years after the city's inception in 1957 by brothers Jack and Leonard Rosen .
In 2018, voters approved a $60 million expansion of the city's parks and amenities through the Parks and Recreation General Obligation (GO) Bond. Part of that was intended for the Yacht Club.
The Cape Coral City Council originally planned to close and begin work on renovations for the park in 2021 .
But then Hurricane Ian struck the city on Sept. 28, 2022, delaying the project with the council eventually opting to revamp the whole area, with the city pointing toward the high cost of repairs and being over FEMA's 50% rule as justification for moving forward with new buildings and amenities.
Longtime residents and former city officials opposed the plans - however, they could not sway the council to change its mind on the new plans.
What's featured in the new Yacht Club?
The current plans include a new two-story community center to replace the ballroom, removing the tennis courts, rearranging the area to accommodate a four-story parking garage, a new restaurant, and a new 14,500-square-foot resort-style pool.
Current parking at the park; including for boats, vehicles, and boat trailers, amounts to 551 total spaces.
The proposed changes would bring a four-story garage with approximately 685 parking spaces, 15 surface spaces at the main building, 46 boat trailers, and 158 boat slip spaces - totaling 904 parking spaces.
The new two-story community center would have 47,000 square feet and include a new ballroom, concession, history room, exterior balcony, storage and meeting space, and a multi-purpose hall.
Previous discussions estimate the cost of the project to be as much as $100 million .
Demolition has begun
Cape Coral has already begun the work toward these changes as demolition started this month.
The city will demolish the main buildings and attached amenities of the Yacht Club, including the ballroom building, the Tony Rotino Center, tennis courts, pool, and harbormaster.
Johnson-Laux Construction, a full-service construction management firm that operates out of Winter Garden, has been contracted to demolish and deconstruct the Yacht Club for $987,716.04.
The firm is also tasked with preserving a portion of the old ballroom building, which includes interior ceiling beams, stonework, a fountain, and interior doors.
Construction will not affect the beach area.
What's next? When's the completion?
A public meeting to review and showcase current Yacht Club designs will be held on May 7.
The city is still in the design phase and has no estimated timeframe for completion.

During our short stay in Cape Coral we came here to walk around the piers, take pics, enjoy the beautiful Florida weather. And we did a lot of that! Nice beaches although we didn't go onto the sand, we stayed walking the pier and just soaking up the sun. Great place to go if you are ever in the area.

Wonderful small family beach. Easy parking. The sunsets from this spot look pretty choice. When we stopped by on a 70-degree day, families were already gathering.
Update: on further inspection we found that there are a lot of activities going on at the community building across from the beach. Comedy shows, craft fairs, concerts, etc. There is also a marina and public pool, and the Boathouse Tiki Bar and Restaurant is next to the beach.
The only beach area in Cape Coral. It's a short stretch of sand with a boat ramp and some playground equipment. Not sure why it's called a yacht club, as it is a public area with not a yacht in sight, but it's nice to sit in the sand. There is overflow parking nearby if you are not lucky enough to find a space along the beach drive. A restaurant/bar is located beside the beach.
Nice place to put in a boat. Fairly small beach are but clean. Big parking area. Easy walk to restaurant down the beach They let you borrow life jackets here No dogs allowed Nice view and calm water
We (my family and I) attended this venue to attend and even work a wedding for a dear friend. The spot for the weeding is located mere footsteps from the water. The building, what they converted into a "hall"for the reception, dining, and marriage license center provided a backdrop for the wedding. I appreciated this venue because the wedding party was left alone without any staff member breathing down their necks for this or that. The Bride & Groom and their guests could just enjoy the wedding. Everyone around was extremely nice and helpful. The sand looked like it just had ben racked. Super clean and family oriented. The beach was not crowded at all, even though it was not as big as other Beaches. Still a must visit if in the area. Or plan your next party/event there! There was a large room with an Ice Machine and I believe a refrigerator. This pics I added speaks a thousand words!

I have been coming here for about 20 years. It's very clean, well maintained and heated in the winter. The pool management and guards keep it safe and orderly. Crowded on weekends, but otherwise very open. Great deal for Lee County residents.

Note: Pardon the dust. Demolition of the main ballroom building, the Tony Rotino Center, tennis courts, pool, and Harbormaster's building is expected to begin in Dec/Jan 2023. Cape Coral Yacht Club
Cape Coral Yacht Club - Come enjoy the beachfront center for Cape Coral recreation, relaxation, and family fun!
UPDATE January 2022: Yacht Club Beach will close for major renovations for 2 years starting in April 2022.
UPDATE September 2022: Due to Hurricane Ian damage the Yacht Club is closed indefinitely.
An elegant fountain welcomes guests ......... and when ground was broken in 1958 to begin building Cape Coral, the Yacht Club was one of the first structures built.
It was important to provide a meeting place and recreation for new residents and also to attract more residents to the Cape during the 1960's.
Today, the Yacht Club continues to provide these services and a whole lot more! I also think you'll get a kick out of the 60's architecture.
This original landmark is part of Yacht Club Community Park, which has a beach, pool, fishing pier, marina, boat launch, tennis, racquet ball, beach pavilion, and ballroom.
Throughout the years, the Yacht Club ballroom has been an interesting part of Cape Coral History and home to many weddings, parties, gatherings, meetings and events ....... along with 2 additional rooms that can be rented.
My daughter has enjoyed the Daddy-Daughter Dance, an event that happens there every January.
From the back of the ballroom, you can see the community public pool. Here's a video of the Cape Coral Yacht Club pool:
The Olympic-sized heated pool is open everyday from March to October from 10AM-5PM.
There is a kiddy pool too, it has a dewdrop fountain and underwater bubblers for some splashing good time!
Swimming lessons, water aerobics, exercise classes, birthday party packages, and other special events are offered throughout the year.
Annual and semi-annual memberships can be purchased and a picnic area can be rented for parties.
A small playground and shuffleboard court is right next to the pool.
Annual pool memberships run for one year, and Semi-Annual run for6 months from the date of purchase. Swim class fees and rentals are extra.
Children 12 and under must be accompanied by an adult 18 or older.
Also located in the Cape Coral Yacht Club building is the Tony Rotino Senior Center where senior citizens can enjoy various activities like fashion shows, teas, dinner dances, exercise or computer classes, day trips, excursions, and fairs.
Next to the Senior Center and across the parking lot are the racquet ball courts.
And, just beyond the racquet ball courts and pool is the Yacht Club marina.
Also called the Cape Coral or Yacht Club Basin , the marina has 89 boat slips can dock boats up to 55 feet long.
Daily, monthly, and annual slip rentals are available on a first-come first-serve basis.
The fuel dock is open 8AM-5PM, and 9AM-5PM on holidays ....... it has gas, diesel, bait, ice, pump-out station, restrooms, showers, washer and dryer.
Next to the marina are five lighted tennis courts that are open Monday-Friday from 8AM-9PM, and Saturday and Sunday from 8AM-5PM.
Walk-ins are welcome and memberships are available for purchase.
Sign up for programs such as Peewee Tennis, Moms Morning Out, Cardio Tennis, adult and child clinics, and round robins are offered.
And, let's not forget about the boat ramp!
Boating in Cape Coral is fantastic! It's only a few miles to Sanibel ....... Ft Myers Beach, Cayo Costa, Captiva, Cabbage Key, and the Gulf of Mexico are just beyond.
Cape Coral residents can buy a $50 annual parking decal for their boat trailer at the Yacht Club or at City Hall.
Parking your boat trailer for the day costs $10 which you pay for at a station at the ramp.
You can't miss the boat ramp, it's just beyond the entrance to the park next to Yacht Club Beach.
As you can see, there are so many fun things to do here, so make sure you get on over to the Yacht Club!

Council discusses new Yacht Club concept plans
‘resort destination’ is the goal, by meghan bradbury - | nov 10, 2023.
The new vision for the Cape Coral Yacht Club is becoming clearer.
Cape Coral City Council reached a consensus Wednesday on certain amenities, including a resort-style pool, a longer replacement pier, centralized restrooms and possibly a water feature.
Core elements include more beach, a new two-story community center, a three-story parking garage and a revamped marina to accommodate larger boats.
The conversation was brought to Council so staff has direction for the rebuilding of the center part of the park, which was not been discussed during the winter retreat.
“Thanks, or no thanks, to Hurricane Ian, that scope has grown,” City Manager Michael Ilczyszyn said.
Cape Coral City Council discussed a pair of design concepts for the Yacht Club Park rebuild Wednesday, with the concept above garnering consensus with some tweaks.
As a result of the retreat in January, the city moved forward with expanding the planned parking garage, shifting the harbor master building, and earmarking space for a second restaurant.
“We will come back to you after the hiatus to discuss the building itself — the ballroom and more of a convention center in order to include the programming from the senior center,” he said.
James Pankonin with Kimley-Horn and Associates took Council through two concepts, which were similar in design before the board overwhelming gave a nod of approval for the first concept.
This design features the community center in the center of the property, which is fairly similar to where it sits today, but with a different orientation to capture the sunset views. The building will range between 35,000 to 40,000 square feet, an increase from the now 21,000 square feet with no true front or back of the building. The concept includes adding the fountain as a site feature by the center.
Councilmember Bill Steinke said if they use the second concept roadway that veers off to the right leading into the park, the fountain could go somewhere in the entry as a focal point to provide a memorial of the original Yacht Club.
Cape Coral City Council also liked some of the elements of the second offered option.
“That would be pretty cool,” he said.
It was also discussed that a water feature could be added to the stormwater pond at the entry and keep the fountain by the center.
Most of on Council liked the second concept as far as how the road wraps around the retention pond at the entry.
Mayor John Gunter said this option would allow them to have larger trees and offer additional buffering between the community, houses and the parking garage.
This option also has a resort-style pool with layering amenities such as a play area, upper landscape, garden areas and pathways of different surfaces.
Pankonin said the resort-style pool is about 15,000 square feet compared to the 6,000-square-foot pool there today. There was also discussion of adding an area where visitors could swim laps, which Ilczyszyn said could be accommodated through programming of specific times.
There is also an additional restaurant option to the south of the parking garage.
Councilmember Dan Sheppard suggested having a smaller establishment that services people at the beach and pool with quick drinks and light things to eat.
“Not really a restaurant that we have now, more of walkup type of establishment,” he said.
Ilczyszyn said staff will look to see when programming the building if they can accommodate pool-side concessions and quick bites.
“We haven’t finalized programming in the building,” he said.
The concept includes dedicated slips adjacent to the pier for individuals to launch and recover their boats, which was a concern brought up from a few council members.
“We absolutely have a launch and recover facility plan next to the boat ramp,” Ilczyszyn said.
He said they are also changing the nature of the yacht basin with a program for much larger vessels with slips to accommodate boats from 60 feet to 24 feet or less. In addition, there is also a big open spot on the east of the boat ramp for a pump out facility.
The L-shaped parking garage is estimated to have about 500 parking spaces, an increase from 305 parking spaces in the original design.
Councilmember Keith Long said that parking is parking and, in a way, it sets the occupancy limit.
The amount of onsite parking gave much of the City Council angst, as they feared it would not be enough for what they anticipate will be a very popular destination once completed.
“One of the things we are really trying to do here is capture alternative modes of transportation,” Ilczyszyn said.
The concept includes expanding the entire seawall, which currently has parallel parking for 13 boats, to accommodate three times that number.
“We want people to come by boat. Enjoy the location, views, restaurant, and beach and go home by boat. We don’t want to over accommodate vehicles,” he said, adding that there are options to ride share, carpool and boat.
Council also questioned the size of the harbor master building, which Ilczyszyn explained would serve four purposes. The building will house the Cape Coral Police Department Marine Unit in a quarter of the space with workstations, meeting rooms, restrooms and communication networks. Another quarter of the building will be an uplands facility for the marina with washing and laundry facilities to support a higher level of standard. Another quarter of the building will feature a ship store to sell goods and the last will be utilized for the actual harbor master.
The historic ballroom and much of the other structure are awaiting demolition, giving the city a largely blank palette on which to build its new vision.
The Boathouse Restaurant, already refurbished and rebuilt after Hurricane Ian, will remain open through the process and will be part of the new park.
Ilczyszyn said they have some demolition plans that are being put together and are going out for bid.
They are bringing in heavy equipment in December to start preparing for the future of the park, he added.
“We have not stopped any original permitting for the replacement of the seawall, marina replacement, harbor master building. (We have) still been advancing that with Army Corps on there. We are hopeful we can get that permit issued and award that contract to get seawalls going. We think this is all laying out well.”

Cape Coral's premier historic gemstone, The Yacht Club, will be gone by the end of May
Cape Coral began demolition of the main Yacht Club buildings this week, starting the work to bring down one of the city's oldest structures.
"Demolition is anticipated to take about a month and a half – it should be done around the end of May," said Cape Coral Spokesperson Kaitlyn Mullen.
The city will demolish the main buildings and attached amenities of the Yacht Club, including the ballroom building, the Tony Rotino Center, tennis courts, pool, and harbormaster.
Here's what we know:
Yacht Club demolition takes down one building already
On Wednesday, the city announced the long-anticipated demolition of the main Yacht Club buildings.
By the end of the day, the Tony Rotino Senior Center, which, before Hurricane Ian, had offered programs and activities for individuals 50 and older since 1977 , had been pulled down.

They tried to save the Yacht Club's main building, the ballroom — one of the city's oldest structures — however, they could not sway the council to change its mind on the new plans.
The current plans include a new two-story community center to replace the ballroom, removing the tennis courts, rearranging the area to accommodate a four-story parking garage, a new restaurant, and a new resort-style pool.
Previous discussions estimate the cost of the project to be as much as $100 million .
When will the new Cape Coral Yacht Club be finished?
The city is still in the design phase and has no estimated timeframe for completion.
What's next for the new Yacht Club?
A public meeting to review and showcase current Yacht Club designs will be held on May 7.
"The design team will present the design plans to any members of the public who attend," Mullen said. "People can ask questions one-on-one of the design team and staff after the presentation."

Gem of the city: The original Cape Coral Yacht Club soon gone, but what of its legacy?
The original Cape Coral Yacht Club ballroom will soon join the ranks of former icons of the city's history – the Cape Coral Gardens, the original Gulf American Corporation, and the Waltzing Waters – as the area forges a new future.
"You ain't seen nothing yet," said Leonard Rosen, Cape Coral founder and then president of the Gulf American Land Corporation during the opening ceremony of the Yacht Club in 1962.
The Yacht Club and its developments signaled the true start of the city as we know it today, with its demise creating a hard-fought chasm within the community.
Janel Trull, the current executive director of Cape Coral Museum of History, said it's unfortunate the city has seen fit to tear down the historic building and believes it could have been saved.
"It is discouraging to know that the City Council thought it best to remove one of the last locations in town that was built by the Rosen Brothers, that was built specifically for the community, and are replacing it with something that's less of what the city is and more of a resort-style facility," Trull said.
Trull said she'll miss taking her kids to swim at the pool.
Why a massive change 60 years later?
Hurricane Ian disrupted the city's initial plans to renovate The Yacht Club Community Park , sparking a tug-of-war between traditionalists and the those advocating for progress on the fate of the facilities.
Workers started razing the building in April, after months of waiting for permits. The new Yacht Club will feature a two-story community center, a parking garage, new restaurant, pool, and other amenities.
The estimated cost of the project could be upward of $100 million with no clear date on when construction will start or be completed.
Yacht Club's new designs and plan Take a look at what architects pitch for a redesigned Cape Coral Yacht Club
The Yacht Club demolition begins Cape Coral's premier historic gemstone, The Yacht Club, will be gone by the end of May
Bustling beginning prompted by the Rosen brothers
Starting in the late 1950s, brothers Jack and Leonard Rosen, founders of Gulf Guarantee Land and Title Co., later renamed Gulf American Land Corp., embarked on a journey to turn a then 107-square-mile swamp peninsula into a company town that would eventually evolve into a still-growing city with more than 216,000 residents , according to the U.S. Census.
The first resident moved to the city in 1958, according to documents from The Cape Coral History Museum.
From there, the original Yacht Club opened its doors on June 10, 1962.
The $1 million complex included the iconic ballroom building, a yacht basis, tennis courts, a junior Olympic-sized pool, a fishing pier, and a beach. Architect William Kreidt designed the building with Fort Myers's Edelbut Construction Co., supervising construction.
The Gulf American Land Corporation owned the facility and would sell three-year memberships to the club.
"The very best way to enjoy the yacht club is not to wait for special programs, but to come by yourself, any day or night, perhaps for sunbathing on the beach …. or with a few friends, maybe for bridge – tables will be set up anytime," wrote William Thew, the first director and manager of the club, in the Cape Coral Sun in 1962.
A throwback to an Old Florida gathering place
Trull described the architecture of the original building as midcentury modern with a lot of personality.
She said it was a building akin to those built in the '50s throughout Florida.
"If you look back at some of the really early stuff that the Rosen Brothers put in the city, it follows along those same lines," Trull said. "It is a sought-after type of architecture today because things are not built in that format anymore, and it is very popular in South Florida."
Early residents could enjoy weekly square dances, and background music playing most of the day from outdoor speakers, soaking in the sun by the beach, or sitting by the blue water of the pool, according to the Cape Coral Sun.
Barbecues were frequent and plentiful as residents brought their families alongside an assortment of meats with the club supplying charcoal and pits, coffee, and cold drinks.
The Yacht Club was just a quarter mile from the first eight homes built in the city.
Eventually, a teen center that only allowed youths with a key was constructed.
Cape Coral Yacht Club gave birth to community service
Councilmember Tom Hayden called the Yacht Club the first true destination for the city.
He said because of the burgeoning nature in the early '60s, the facility was the only place that was big enough for events and groups to meet.
"Every single club got its original started at the Yacht Club," Hayden said. "From the oldest clubs: the garden club, the social club; the first churches in the Cape had their first services out there, all the city organizations started out there."
"It truly was the birthplace for how Cape Coral got its start," he added.
The city purchased the Yacht Club from The Gulf American Land Corporation in the mid-1970s for less than $1 million, and the teen club became the first senior center, The Tony Rotino Center, named after a former councilmember, according to documents from The Cape Coral History Museum.
Trull said the Yacht Club experienced so many changes and updates throughout its lifespan to reflect the community's needs.
"I think it did reflect the growth and the need for more facilities like that in the city because it was used on a regular basis by so many people," Trull said.
Former Cape Coral Mayor Joe Mazurkiewicz previously said his campaign launched at the Yacht Club, the meetings on whether the city should incorporate took place in the ballroom building, and it served as the site of many more substantial events.
Plans for the park
In 2018, voters approved a $60 million expansion of the city's parks and amenities through the Parks and Recreation General Obligation (GO) Bond. Part of that was intended for the Yacht Club Community Park.
The Cape Coral City Council had originally planned to close and begin work on renovations for the park in 2021 .
But then Hurricane Ian struck the city on Sept. 28, 2022, delaying the project with the council eventually opting to revamp the whole area, with the city pointing toward the high cost of repairs and being over FEMA's 50% rule as justification for moving forward with new buildings and amenities.
Longtime residents and former city officials opposed the plans – however, they could not sway the council to change its mind.
The current plans include a new two-story community center to replace the ballroom, removing the tennis courts, rearranging the area to accommodate a four-story parking garage, a new restaurant, and a new 14,500-square-foot resort-style pool.
The proposed changes would bring a four-story garage with approximately 685 parking spaces, 15 surface spaces at the main building, 46 boat trailers, and 158 boat slip spaces – totaling 904 parking spaces.
Current parking at the park; including for boats, vehicles, and boat trailers, amounts to 551 total spaces.
The new two-story community center would have 47,000 square feet and include a new ballroom, concession, history room, exterior balcony, storage and meeting space, and a multi-purpose hall.
Cape Coral has already begun the work toward these changes as demolition started in April with the cherished ballroom building coming down last week.
Hayden said he fought to have a history room dedicated to the old Yacht Club building in the new two-story community center design.
"Things evolve, but I think for early residents of the city, the significance of the yacht club was their life," Hayden said. "We can't necessarily control what
Bitter and sweet for residents and officials alike
Gloria Tate, a former District One councilmember and longtime Cape Coral resident said the loss of the original building deeply saddens her.
"Every fond memory I have is related to that Yacht Club. All of it is part of my life here in Cape Coral."Gloria Tate, longtime Cape Coral resident and businesswoman
Tate was against the city's plans to demolish the main Yacht club building and fought to preserve it as a historic building.
"Every fond memory I have is related to that Yacht Club," Tate said. "All of it is part of my life here in Cape Coral."
One such memory that she will always remember is petitioning to get into a Christmas dance at the teen center.
The year was around 1964, she was not 13 yet but wanted to be involved with the handful of teens in the then-small city.
"I was very happy to be allowed to access the property before I turned 13," Tate said. "It's nothing like it is today."
She said the new Yacht Club will never be what it was for the original pioneers in Cape Coral, but she's hopeful it will become a place for weddings, ceremonies, and "all kinds of life blessings" for the new generation of residents.
"I look forward to that," Tate said.
Though regrettable, Tate said she appreciates the council's effort to transform the area.
"I understand about progress, and I think it's going to be good to just get it started," Tate said. "After all this, let's just get on with it."
Not all residents share the sentiment.
Janis Keim, a Cape Coral resident since 1976 who worked as the Yacht Club manager for many years, said it hurt her heart to hear that the demolition began.
She spoke at council meetings to try to save the Yacht Club and mourns the loss of the community pool.
" Drowning is the leading cause of death of children under the age of 5 in the state of Florida , and we have no community pool in Cape Coral," Keim said.
Bob Lauson, who participated in the effort to save the Yacht club, called the city's plans horrible.
"I lost sleep over this," Lauson said. "I just didn't want that image in my head of that wrecking ball and whatever they are doing over there."
When he was made aware of the city's history five years ago, Lauson bought a '60s-style home in South Cape Coral. He would drive visitors to the Yacht club to witness where the city's history had started.
"I went to a lot of public meetings and events at the Yacht Club Ballroom, and I always thought it was a delight to go there, and my kids swam in the pool," Lauson said.
He hated the way the city switched its reasoning for not moving forward with the initial renovations of the club, from the city touting extensive damage to the facility as the main reason to later saying the deferred maintenance was the issue.
"It just seems to me that we have a council dominated by developers, real estate people," Lauson said. "There's some kind of race to 400,000 people, and I'm just concerned that the quality of life around here is going to go down."
He will miss the beauty of the building and what it represented.
"It just all goes with the narrative of the history of Cape Coral, and how they built that building to attract people to move here, and I think it was to show future property owners that they were really serious and that Cape Coral was going to be a special place," Lauson said.
The future of the park
Lauson said he's concerned that the Yacht Club area will remain empty for years before the city figures out how to pay and begin the construction of the facilities.
"You got to feel really sorry (for the neighborhood) because that's probably going to be an empty lot and an eyesore for years, and then there's going to be some big huge construction project," Lauson said.
Keim worries that the Yacht Club Community Park will eventually be commercialized.
"It just upsets me because I feel like Police and Fire (are) not under the gun to generate revenue like Parks and Rec," Keim said.
District One Councilmember Bill Steinke said the city's plans would enhance the area and provide a better place for more memories for future residents to enjoy.
"The great thing is that it will continue to be the gem (of the city), and it will be better than ever and will accommodate more of our population than ever.Bill Steinke, Cape Coral Councilman, District 1
"The great thing is that it will continue to be the gem (of the city), and it will be better than ever and will accommodate more of our population than ever, and it will provide services to our community members and our organizations – more than the previous facility could," Steinke said.
When the council member was an infant, his family would take him to go swimming in the original pool, with his kids using the facility for swimming throughout the '80s and '90s.
Additionally, he used to play racquetball and tennis there.
As a council member, he will work toward finding a suitable location for pickleball and tennis near the Yacht Club Park.
Steinke said he made many memories, but he's excited for the future of the park.
"You only miss your memories if you give up your memories," Steinke said.

Cape Coral Councilmember Tom Hayden not running for reelection in 2024
Cape Coral Councilmember Tom Hayden, 66, announces he will not run for reelection in 2024.
He said he made the decision last summer and cited his age, his wife's retirement, and wanting to spend more time with his family.
"Serving a second term, had I been elected, would have been a tremendous honor, but as I've looked at my age and as I've looked at the fact that my wife retires; about the same time that my first term ends, life is precious, and as you get older, you start to look at things that you want to accomplish," Hayden said. "These are important years for us coming up to be able to accomplish all that, and I don't want to have any regrets about missing years that I'm going to treasure."
Hayden has served as the District 3 council member since 2020, and his term is set to expire in November.
He plans to spend his last month in office working on a 10-year sidewalk plan for the city, making progress on the city's transportation plan, and helping the city in collective bargaining with the unions.
"That goes to my vision of we are here to plan this city for the next 20 or 30 years, and this transportation plan will do that," Hayden said.

Who is Tom Hayden?
Hayden worked for The News-Press for more than 20 years in various roles, including sports editor, Cape Coral news editor, and opinion page editor, and has 41 years of experience as a journalist.
He moved to Cape Coral in 1996 after accepting a job with The News-Press and was struck by the more than 400 miles of canals and the potential growth that was ahead of it.
"The fact that it was mostly residential at that time, getting younger, then it was known as a bedroom community, but you knew that it probably wasn't going to stay that way, and I wanted to be a part of that," Hayden said.
When he came to the council role, he said he prioritized speaking and listening to the residents.
He said his experience as a journalist helped him learn how to talk with residents, address criticism, and deal with nonstop issues in the city.
What shocked Hayden about the role was the amount of information available to him, how caring and conscious the city staff is, and the hours it takes to prepare for a meeting.
During his term, he had to contend with COVID-19, decisions on parks and attractions such as the Yacht Club and Coral Oaks Golf Course, the aftermath of Hurricane Ian, and delivering needed infrastructure to the growing city of Cape Coral.
What are his proudest accomplishments?
As a council member, Hayden said he focused on getting more sidewalks near schools, preserving and improving environmental spaces, talking to developers to get more affordable and workforce housing, and improving traffic congestion.
"I think we've been able to stay on a path of sight that we're almost finished now getting sidewalks completed within 1 mile of schools, and now we move on to get them done within 2 miles of schools," Hayden said.
He also hopes to see a 10-year sidewalk plan developed for roads still in need.
Hayden touts Coviello Park and Yellow Fever Creek as areas that have their natural state of wetland preserved while undergoing improvements.
He said he led the charge on getting the planning development and engineered study for Pine Island Road done.
"So we could fast-track getting that road widened," Hayden said. "Not only because of all the development going on that road, we know it's heavily congested now, but also as a hurricane evacuation route for Pine Island and the city."
Hayden also helped complete a master plan for the Utility Extension Project and passed the water conservation ordinance , which requires certain standards to be met when installing new irrigation systems.
"Getting that passed was huge for me because I know how important it's going to be, not immediately but 20, 30 years from now," Hayden said. "If we don't start conserving water, we're not going to be in a very good place."
Hayden also served as the Cape Coral Youth Council liaison, and he said he was proud to help guide the members.
What about his controversial decisions?
The councilmember is not afraid of being an outlier against the majority opinion or even residents.
Hayden had voted against the budget during 2021 and 2022 as he didn't agree with going with the rollback rate, which is the tax rate that would produce the same amount of property tax revenue as the prior year, and wanted a budget that would invest more in hiring, programs, and maintenance.
"My vision for the city was you can't have a flat, no gross budget in a growing city," Hayden said. "There are certain things that have to be done, people have to be hired, programs need to be put in place, facilities need to be maintained or built, and you can't you can't do that on a flat budget."
He also pointed to the planned improvement of Jaycee Park as another example.
"We've heard a lot that we weren't listening to residents," Hayden said. "I told them during one meeting, 'I'm listening to you; I just don't agree with you.' I liked the changes to what is one of our few waterfront parks and what we're going to do there."
Though, he did change his mind in a few areas.
He initially was against any privatization of Cape Coral's city-owned Coral Oaks Golf Course but came around as he noticed the course deteriorate.
"I realized that we probably weren't the ones to be managing and running that golf course," Hayden said.
Hayden also stood as a dissenting voice against the demolition of the main building of the Cape Coral Yacht Club as he said it carried so much history for the city.
"It was important in some way to preserve that history and that memory and what that meant to the community," Hayden said.
The Cape Coral Yacht Club, which includes the yacht basin, tennis courts, a swimming pool, a ballroom, and a riverside beach, is the city's premier waterfront attraction and has served as a popular attraction and staple for the city since the 1960s.
Hurricane Ian, a Category 5 storm, devastated the city on Sept. 28, leading to the Yacht Club's closure.
The demolition of the yacht club's existing building has been contentious as residents and officials are mixed on the council's decision to take a "clean slate" approach in January to renovate the area and its facilities after Ian paused the initial renovation plans.
The majority opinion won out, and Hayden changed his strategy to preserve parts of the main building.
Hayden also disagreed with getting rid of volunteer committees such as the Community Redevelopment Agency.
"As soon as we started to eliminate them, we continued to separate government from the people, and I never wanted to do that, I wanted them to be a part of it," Hayden said.
More recently, Hayden and other council members came under fire after approving a monthly stipend.
The council approved monthly stipends for each member, doubling their annual salaries, on Dec. 14 despite heavy residential backlash.
It was a voting item listed on the consent agenda and approved without discussion in a 5-1 vote, with each council member receiving a monthly $3,333 and the mayor receiving a monthly $5,000.
Hayden said he understands that the stipends are controversial, but stands by his support of them.
He maintains that his family kept falling further into debt as the city's salary was not enough and he had to get a second job.
"This makes things easier financially for me," Hayden said. "It also now allows me to spend my last year in office, dedicating even more time to council, and getting things accomplished that I want to get accomplished this last year, or at least get the ball rolling on some projects that won't be finished this year."
What should the next council member look out for?
Hayden plans to spend the rest of his life in the city and says whoever wins the District 3 seat next must be someone who can look far ahead.
"I've said many times that I really believe a significant part of what we do is that future plan for our city, not only how we implemented a strategic plan, but how we move forward with other issues in the city," Hayden said.
He also encourages the next council member to be open to residents and the media.
"So I think whoever takes a seat has to know they have to be dedicated to their community, this job first," Hayden said.
