My 9 Favorite Things To Do In Beautiful Gadsden, Alabama

riverboat in gadsden alabama

  • Destinations
  • United States

Gadsden, Alabama, in Etowah County, has a prime location in the northeast quadrant of the State of Alabama between Birmingham and Chattanooga and just off Interstate 59. The population numbering approximately 36,000 enjoys the geographic beauty of the Appalachian foothills, a vibrant downtown, and the advantages that come with life along the Coosa River.

It is a city of superlatives, at least if you believe their claims to fame such as “the world’s largest” and “the world’s longest” as you will see on my list. Gadsden also has a famous park with a captivating legend. It’s a great place to spend a day or a weekend, and I have recently been able to enjoy both. Here are my suggestions for nine must-do activities when you find Gadsden for yourself.

Noccalula Falls

1. Noccalula Falls

Once upon a time, there was a beautiful Indian maiden who was in love with a young brave in her tribe. Her father, the chief, made a different alliance and promised her to another man. To learn the rest of the story, visit the 90-foot waterfall at Noccalula Falls Park and see the statue of Princess Noccalula.

At the park, you can camp in an RV or tent, rent one of the two-bedroom cabins, walk, hike, or bike 16 miles of trails, visit the petting zoo, enjoy a train ride, explore a pioneer homestead, or play miniature golf. Fly fishing for trout is available in season in Black Creek feeding the magnificent falls.

Special events at the park include Smoke on the Falls, which is the annual Kansas City Bar-B-Q Society Cook-off held in the spring, and Art on the Rocks, an arts and craft show held in the fall.

Although Noccalula may have been a legend, it is an important part of Gadsden history that the Creek and Cherokee nations of American Indians inhabited the area in the late 1700s and early 1800s.

Pro Tip: The two-bedroom cabins are particularly nice for a getaway in the fall. The colors of the trees are spectacular, the fireplace is cozy, and the sounds of Black Creek which can be seen from the back porch are mesmerizing.

Gadsden Variety & Deli

2. Broad Street

Mater’s Pizza and Pasta Emporium reigns as the oldest restaurant in the downtown historic district, but through the years it has been joined by two dozen other eateries. The most recent ones are S.A. Cantina, Las Brisas Mexican Restaurant, NOLA on 2 nd (a block and a half off Broad Street), and Scoop de Jour, serving great ice cream.

30 retail shops are ready to be explored, a massage and yoga studio will help you relax, and an axe-throwing business will increase your aim and focus.

Mary G. Hardin Center for Cultural Arts

3. Mary G. Hardin Center For Cultural Arts

Broad Street also serves as the City of Gadsden’s hub for fine arts with three outstanding facilities. Gadsden Museum of Art is open Tuesday through Saturday, and admission is free. Imagination Place, a well-planned children’s museum, is designed for children ages 2 to 10. Everything is child-sized to make it easy for kids to explore a town, a grocery store, a train station, a farm, a sunken pirate ship, and more.

Mary G. Harden Center for Cultural Arts is on the corner of the block in what was once a Belk-Hudson department store. The center houses an art gallery, event venues, and a 72-foot model train running through a replica of Gadsden as it was in the 1940s. It is the home for the Downtown Dance Conservatory and the Etowah Youth Orchestra. Visitors can find parking along Broad Street or in the convenient lot behind the museum and center.

In addition to the Imagination Place, there are musical instruments attractive to young children in an outdoor space behind the Hardin Center. This is a great place to take children and grandchildren, especially when you combine it with an ice cream cone from nearby Scoop du Jour.

Pro Tip: Museum lovers will want to find the Gadsden Museum of Art and History. The third floor houses a history museum of Etowah County.

"World's Largest Seafood Platter" served at Top O' the River in Gadsden

4. Top O’ The River

Any meal that begins with a skillet of hot cornbread, a plate of pickled onions, and a bowl of coleslaw is promising enough, but when Top O’ the River adds catfish, shrimp prepared three different ways, stuffed crab, and hushpuppies, the meal goes over the top. I’ve seen a lot of seafood platters, and I believe this one must surely be the largest. The restaurant also offers grilled and fried crawfish, steaks, chicken, and delicious fruity drinks.

Combine that with a view of the Coosa River and it becomes swoon-worthy. The river, in fact, is a major asset for Gadsden and nearby cities such as Anniston. River Rocks Landing has recently been developed, so guests can stay on the river and enjoy the views for a night or more. You can stay in a condo or a tiny house, experience glamping, or sleep luxuriously in a five-bedroom home. The Current is a riverside snack bar and a great place to watch kayakers navigate the waters.

5. The World’s Longest Yard Sale

A yard sale that stretches for 690 miles through six states deserves the title of “World’s Longest.” Taking place annually on the first Thursday through Saturday in August, the sale begins in Gadsden at Noccalula Falls Park and ends in Addison, Michigan. The sale is also called the 127 Yard Sale because it follows Highway 127 and the Lookout Mountain Parkway.

Expect to find thousands of vendors and realize that it will be impossible to stop at all of them.

You’ll find collectibles, antiques, household goods, games, toys, dishes, fresh produce, baked goods, sporting goods, and so much more. Take plenty of cash, because only a small number of vendors will accept credit cards. Check the website for the route, plan to start at any point that looks convenient for you, expect to cover no more than 100-150 miles a day, and reserve a hotel room well in advance. Take plenty of water in a cooler in your car, and best advice of all — don’t pass up a public restroom whenever you find one.

6. Coosa Landing

The Coosa River has earned a great reputation for having impressive numbers of bass and crappie. That, in turn, has led to fishing tournaments galore beginning and ending at Coosa Landing. If you are an early riser, the start of a tournament is fun to watch with the engines revving and racing away at the starting signal, all trying to get to the best spots first. But it is also great to be there at the end when the anglers bring in the day’s catch for a weigh-in which will hopefully lead to coveted prizes.

The Coosa Landing Super Bass Tournament held in April has a hefty first-place prize of $3,000. Coosa Landing is also the host site for tournaments sponsored by Crappie U.S.A., the BASS Federation, the Women’s Bass Fishing Association, and others.

First Friday event in Gadsden

7. First Friday Festivities

From April to October each year, Broad Street is the place to be on the first Fridays of the month. Police close off several blocks beginning at 3:30 p.m. Antique cars, polished and gleaming, park on the street to be admired and possibly driven home by a new owner. Live musicians set up their speakers on a few corners, and stores and restaurants prepare to keep their doors open until 9 p.m. Then the crowds begin to show up. This is a great place to see your friends, enjoy some free entertainment, browse the shops, and order a meal. The atmosphere is light-hearted and lively. It’s like having a festival, only this festival happens every month for 7 months.

Worker preparing Noccalula Falls Park for the holidays

8. Holiday Lights

Noccalula falls park.

Gadsden dresses up for the holidays. Broad Street is filled with lights and fun window displays. There are special events planned at the Hardin Center and in area churches. But probably the most spectacular sight happens at Noccalula Falls Park when Christmas at the Falls flips the switch on millions of lights and dozens of colorful decorations. You can enjoy the lights by walking, but it’s especially fun to take the train through the park after dark. Park employees start preparing weeks in advance because this is arguably their most popular time of the year.

Barbecued ribs, grilled cabbage, grilled bread, and more at Bootsie's

9. Bootsie’s

Bootsie’s is in Attalla, and downtown Attalla is approximately 5 miles from downtown Gadsden. However, the barbecue is so good at Bootsie’s that I must include it on my list of favorite things. Daddy Bootsie is the chef. His wife manages everybody and everything, and their daughters make the desserts and keep the diners happy. Bootsie’s ribs and pulled pork are outstanding, and the side dishes are exceptionally good, too. They serve grilled cabbage rather than coleslaw, and the grilled bread is divine. No calories have been saved in this café with a happy family atmosphere.

Pro Tip: Bootsie’s is only open Wednesday through Saturday, so plan carefully to avoid being disappointed.

Gadsden has several sites that are significant to African Americans who participated in Civil Rights Marches in the early 1960s. Among them are Union Baptist Church, Dr. J.W. Stewart’s Skyliner Building, and Etowah County Courthouse.

Other popular activities in Gadsden include golfing on two championship golf courses, Silver Lakes and Twin Bridges , and indoor rock climbing at GadRock on the Coosa River. Silver Lakes is part of the acclaimed Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail. You’ll also want to be on the lookout for special events at Gadsden State Community College and nearby Huntsville. Let me encourage you to allow yourself time to get off the interstate between Birmingham and Chattanooga and explore this gem in Northeast Alabama.

Very friendly hosts. Very easy getting in and out, even though at first I was skeptical of pulling in as it said "no outlet" and did not seem like an RV park entrance. When you do venture in it seems We camped at River Rocks Landing in a Travel Trailer.

“Beautiful site right on river”

We selected a river side site and were assigned site 120. Other sites near the river are pull in, however for some reason our site was a backin. It is a shame that such a beautiful river side view is We camped at River Rocks Landing in a Motorhome.

As others have recommended Nocculula Falls State park is worth seeing, they have a small animal enclosure area, bontanical gardens, pioneer village, and a number of hiking trails. The main gorge hiking trail is accessable within the park and is a short 2 mile hike....

Lake Guntersville

Fishing in Gadsden, Alabama, is an adventure many anglers look forward to. Once the spring season begins, anglers occupy this region’s lakes, creeks, and rivers. With the city approving 7 tournaments suitable for junior and senior anglers in 2023, Gadsden seems to be a popular angler’s gathering place.

With the exciting tournaments motivating and promoting fishing in Gadsden, Alabama, we couldn’t help but get our reels and explore the area. The Gadsden area features some of the best fisheries in the US. If you’re visiting the city, learn about all the hidden gems and the best fishing lake in Gadsden, AL.

Gadsden Alabama Fishing Spots

Gadsden’s lakes, rivers, and streams offer some of the best fishing spots . You can access some of the most beautiful areas around the city in just an hour’s ride or less. Here are some of our favorite places you cannot miss.

The first stop for any angler is the Neely Henry Lake – built in 1966 on the impediment of the Coosa River. It is only a 20-minute ride south from Gadsden by AL–77 highway. If you are looking for a fishing experience similar to fishing on a creek or a river, try the area from the Weiss Dam to the Hwy 77 bridge. However, if you want a more lake-like fishing experience, then you can go from HWY 77 bridge to the Neely Henry Dam. This area is more reminiscent of a lake.

The lake is more than 11,000 acres big, meaning there’s room for plenty of fish. The predominant fish species you can find here are spotted bass , crappie, largemouth bass, striper, and catfish. Neely Henry Lake also boasts the exclusive Coosa Spot bass, a spotted bass breed with a temper of a largemouth. Anglers say that the challenge the Coosa Spot poses is only for the most skilled and patient angler. Therefore, if you want to test your skills, you have a great opportunity against this unique breed.

The Coosa River is considered Alabama’s most developed river. The starting point of Coosa is the confluence of the Etowah and Oostanaula Rivers in Georgia , ending in Alabama’s capital Montgomery where it meets the Tallapoosa River.

The Coosa River offers a rich fish population, exciting opportunities, and beautiful landscapes to explore. Despite enjoying a fishing trip along the river, every angler has to see the breathtaking beauty of the nature surrounding the Coosa River.

Fans of river fishing will surely enjoy the Coosa River, which has a lot to offer. Coosa is considered the place of Alabama’s most productive white bass spawning runs in spring. Anglers can’t get enough of the continuous fishing action and the fight this fish species provides.

Coosa River has an abundance of common fish types like:

  • Black crappie
  • Channel, blue, and flathead catfish
  • Smallmouth Buffalo
  • Stripped, largemouth, spotted, white, and yellow bass
  • Redbreast, redear, and green sunfish
  • Freshwater drum

Black Creek

Black Creek is one of the most beautiful fishing areas near Gadsden. The creek flows through Noccalula Falls Park and is only a few minutes away from Gadsded downtown. The place offers beautiful nature and the possibility to enjoy many fun outdoor activities nearby. If you’re looking for areas to spend some quality time with your family, you’ll have plenty of things to do in Black Creek.

Fishing is also an option in Black Creek, where the most interesting, compelling, and thrilling trout challenge awaits. Rainbow trouts are the predominant fish population at Black Creek and are basically the rulers of this area. The Black Creek trout are known for their temperament and are always ready for some action. Fly-fishing is quite popular here, so if you want to improve your game – there is no better place than Black Creek.

However, Black Creek’s strict fishing policy differs from other G adsden, AL, fishing laws. A special trout fishing permit is required to fish within the Noccalula Falls Park and the regular Alabama fishing license . So before organizing a fishing trip to Black Creek, make sure you know all the laws and regulations to avoid paying high fines.

Lake Guntersville is a 45-minute drive northwest of Gadsden. Don’t let the timing discourage you because it’s worth all the trouble. The lake offers many outdoor activities, including fishing, hunting, camping, boating, golfing, and eagle-watching. That’s all due to the fertile flora and fauna around Lake Guntersville.

The lake is just as fertile as the soil around it. The dense vegetation of Milfoil and Hydrilla Weed is usually the best habitat for largemouth bass. The bass thrives and governs the lake, but you’ll also find crappie, catfish, bream, bluegill, redear, sunfish, and saugers.

Fishing regulations differ here, so come informed and prepared. Anglers come here for the aggressive action-pack largemouth bass fishing; many offer tournaments.

Big Wills Creek Campground & Tubing

Big Wills Creek Campground and Tubing is only a 15-minute drive west of Gadsden. It’s the ideal weekend getaway for an adventurous fishing trip. The creek offers many access points –  you can wade into the river to fish or get a kayak or paddle boat. Every access point is well-marked, so you will easily find your way around.

The creek currents are super fast and offer the perfect conditions for fly fishing. The predominant fish population in Big Wills is bass, catfish , and panfish. Many anglers come here for the bass fishing adventure and the area’s beautiful nature. Big Wills also offers camping options where anglers gather so they can fish together.

Top Targeted Fish Species

Rainbow Trout

Fish species in gadsden, alabama.

Gadsden is home to a variety of fish species. It offers convenient conditions for many predators that seem to flow in the Alabama waters. Below we’ll discuss the most popular fish species in Gadsden and what makes them an interesting catch.

Largemouth Bass

The largemouth bass is a predator fish that prefers densely vegetative areas to hide and wait on the prey. Nocturnal fish feed at night, so the best fishing hours would be either late in the evening or very early in the morning.

Anglers who prefer late-night fishing can go kayaking or paddling because largemouths are most likely to be found in the middle of the lake searching for food. Wading fishing is most suitable in the early hours because that’s when the bass return to their hiding places. The usual spots where you can find largemouth bass are near the bank or in bushes or rocks.

Spotted Bass

The spotted bass may be related to the largemouth bass, but some differences still single them as a separate breed. The main difference is the habitat. Unlike the largemouth bass that can dwell in murky waters, the spotted bass prefers exclusively clean and clear water conditions. Spotted bass cannot live in streams since they prefer still water. Similar to the largemouth bass, the spotted bass are also predatory fish, and they feed on smaller fish and are not as big as the largemouths.

Crappies are also predatory fish that enjoy murky waters and sandy bottoms. They are primarily found in natural lakes with a sandy bottom structure where they usually hide or in reservoirs with pond-like conditions.

Crappies do not enjoy high streams so you can find them in rivers or creeks only during spawning season. They will deliver the new crappies in a creek and may to calmer areas. The thing about crappies is that they are schooling fish, meaning if you find one crappie, chances are you’ve hit a crappie hotspot.

Catfish is one of the most appealing and exciting gamefish in US waters. Anglers have difficulties catching these species because they grow to a trophy or gigantic size, and each catfish breed requires special attention to trick them. Expect a lot of resistance and fighting back once they’re hooked.

Catfish have great adaptability features so that they can adjust to murky and clear water. Their behavior greatly depends on the place where they live. To catch a catfish, educate yourself and explore the habits of Gadsden Al fishing. The fun fact about catfish is they have outstanding smell and taste senses that help them when they hunt.

Usually, many Gadsden, Alabama , fishing spots in the river are homes for the famous rainbow trout. This type of fish exists in the creeks and rivers, for which they are the most sought-after fish in the fly fishing technique. The rainbow trout feeds on aquatic fleas or smaller fish, and only mature rainbow trout feed on smaller fish.

 Gadsden, Alabama, Fishing Regulations

When embarking on a Gadsden, Alabama, fishing adventure, everyone must follow the general Gadsden, Alabama, fishing regulations . There are also further local fishing regulations that may be applied and followed.

Let’s start with fishing permits. Alabama residents don’t need to purchase a permit, and those over 64 years, with a valid ID, also don’t need a fishing license. Any person older than 16 must have a valid fishing license to fish in salty waters. The Gadsden, Alabama, fishing guides state that Alabama anglers fishing in freshwater using live bait do not need a fishing license.

Some regulations may include not crossing the daily limit of the given fish, the methods of fishing like having one rod per person, or specific kinds of rods that are allowed.

Before going fishing, always check the Gadsden, Alabama, fishing season regulations, as they differ between states.

Tips for Fishing in Gadsden, Alabama

Gadsden, Alabama, bass fishing opens as of May 1st and continues till late fall. During this period, you have plenty of opportunities to catch your trophy fish. Pack your fly fishing and spin casting gear, trolling equipment, and baitcasting setup and find the best fishing spot.

Gadsden, Alabama, fishing lakes have an abundance of largemouth bass and other game fish that catch the attention of anglers. Below, we elaborate more on the best lures you can use for the most popular fish in Gadsden.

  • Largemouth bass : positive results are proking the fish with spinnerbaits, swimbaits, or jigs. Anglers must imitate the most realistic moves because bass fish are intelligent and rather intuitive. They can easily recognize if another predator is trying to lure them into a trap.
  • Catfish: Since catfish have heightened senses of smell and taste, the ideal fish bait should be stinky. We recommend live baits because they’re by far the most successful baits for catfish. If you want to use artificial lures, find smelly plastic worm lures with the scent of coffee. This usually surprises all anglers, but it’s said to work like a charm.
  • Spotted Bass: You can use the jigs, crankbaits, or spinnerbaits you used on the largemouth bass. However, you need to go out on the lake because they are schooling fish and usually dwell deeper in the lake. Get a boat or kayak from one of the closest Gadsden, Alabama, fishing charters .
  • Crappie : You can never go wrong with a spinner bait. Crappies enjoy hiding behind a log or a bush or sitting at the bottom of the lake. If you are after them, look into these areas first.

Fishing in Gadsden, Alabama: Final Words

Largemouth bass dwell in many fishing spots, including reservoirs and creeks. Gadsden, Alabama, fishing is also known for the rainbow trout, catfish, and crappie. You can find rainbow trout in many beautiful locations where you can enjoy the intriguing challenge these trouts pose. Similarly, catfish are also a popular way to test your skills.

Consult Gadsden, Alabama, fishing guides to learn more about the fishing in the area. They have the scoop of what fish like and don’t like, where they like to hide, and more. And don’t forget to check the laws on fishing and the licenses you’ll need.

Bought the KLR in 2010, great service, great price - always check these guys and compare before you buy - many times they already beat or will negotiate and be competitive in a price match if you find lower elsewhere. Always try to go local when I can and these guys are in my top 3 dealers to in Alabama to go to first for bikes. Have used service on a couple occasions and they handled my issue on time and at quoted price!

Too bad the old cycle world is gone. The Gadsden and Oxford location are nuts. Shipping, prep, extra subsidiary prep something and then tax. At least 1/4the cost of full msrp. In layman's terms, if you want an 8k bike, gonna cost ya 12 to buy it. How are they in business.? Then get upset with me when I laughed and asked are they crazy.

Charles at Mountain Motorsports Gadsden was great! Easy and painless purchase for our sons PW50. He was thorough and easy to talk to! Go see him

Photo of John B.

Do not buy from these people. I made a deal gave them earnest money. Then they wanted to charge me more money. Typical way all the mountain Motorsports dealers work. Buyer beware

Photo of Ethan M.

Had an easy and painless buying experience thanks to Charles, he was a great salesman and I did not feel at any point that I was being sold to. He laid the information out, went over the specifics and went above and beyond to make sure I was comfortable while waiting for the paperwork side of things to go through. The process did take 2 days to complete but I had special circumstances. But overall I highly recommend this dealership in particular over any other dealer.

Just wanted to stop in and talk about what a great experience I had with Chris and his team at Speedzone. I had been looking for a CRF110 for my niece which was planned to be a xmas present this year. However CRF110 have been extremely hard to get ahold of. I called around to almost every dealer near Atlanta and also many in the surrounding states with absolutely no luck. I got a call from Chris on Dec 23 telling me a truck full of Honda bikes just arrived with a new CRF110. I told him to hold it for me and would be there on xmas eve. Did the 2.5 hr drive out to his dealership and was greeted by friendly faces and great customer service. Did our paperwork and waited a little for them to PDI the bike before loading it up and heading back. Great dealership and looking forward to the next bike I buy with them. Thanks again guys!

Colton was a excellent salesman. He was not pushy and let me decide on what I liked. There prices were very reasonable and they have a good selection of equipment.

I'm 62 year's old and been riding and working on my own motorcycles and ATV since I was 12 this place has the number one worst parts department I've ever dealt with.

Photo of Deeth S.

Update: After posting this the manager from SpeedZone in Gadsden, AL Chris D. finally sent me a message to run his dishonest mouth, the manager is a liar too! He said they have zero record of me calling or submitting an online inquiry. He also said to make sure I'm reviewing the right dealership; really? You think you're smarter than technology and/or me? What does Chris D. think this is 1950, my phone has all the evidence I need, you receive an email notification when you submit an online inquiry, inquiry submitted on 8.30. 2020 - review submitted 5 days later! Don't make me post the screenshots that reflect the treasure trove of calls I made to your SECOND RATE BUSINESS that went completely unfollowed up on! And by the way your numbskull internet manager told me he could see my inquiry when I called. You are a liar Sir, you can clearly see the message you sent me and the overwhelming evidence in the picture I added don't add up, take responsibility for your suckyness! I know it's not a word but that's how I feel about your shitty approach! I added a picture of my completely awesome Can Am Spyder F3-S that I gladly DIDN't purchase from SpeedZone in Gadsden!

Evidence that Gadsden SpeedZone Sucks!

Evidence that Gadsden SpeedZone Sucks!

My beast! Glad I didn't purchase from the incompetent team at Gadsden SpeedZone!

My beast! Glad I didn't purchase from the incompetent team at Gadsden SpeedZone!

Worst dealership I've ever dealt with, if you have the option to purchase elsewhere I would highly suggest it. Insanely unprofessional, they literally wouldn't and didn't even try to take my money, I was in the market for a Can Am Spyder F3-S, paying cash $20k and couldn't even get them to call me back. I left messages on their voicemail, emailed and tried the online chat for a week but they never even tried contacting me back. After a week I tried calling them, I was already disappointed with there lack luster approach but tried anyways, when I called the guy was completely rude and hung up on me once I asked for the managers name, I guess customers don't matter to them! I then proceeded to call back but no one would take my call so I called their other location in Oxford, I finally got a manger on the way phone, Derrick the finance manager who obviously fed me a complete line of crap, "oh that's not how we do business, I will contact the other store to resolve the issue, so sorry". I finally got fed up and wanted to speak my mind, at this point I had zero intention of purchasing from this disgrace of a business, so I called back to the Gadsden location and managed to get the internet sales manager on the phone (another very unprofessional employee of this second rate business), he proceeded to tell me he would talk to the store manager regarding my situation to see how they could make it better. Guess what? I never received a call back from anyone, not Derrick who said he would call me back from the Oxford store, no call from the internet manager at the Gadsden store and at this point if they called it wouldn't matter as I already picked up my 2021 Can Am Spyder F3-S from Extreme Propulsion in Cartersville, GA. Paid 20K in cash and left with what I wanted, zero headache, completely professional employees and tip top customer service. I found this truly amazing; why would you treat customers this way? Why wouldn't you want to sell a vehicle? Why didn't you call me back? Worthless! Hiring rude, unprofessional and inept employees leads to lost sales and poor customer service! If you want to experience real customer service don't purchase from SpeedZone in Alabama!

Photo of Dan M.

This is the worst place I've ever dealt with. I literally called 4 different times telling them that I want to buy a ATV that they have online for sale and all I got was we will call you back. They never did call back and when i asked questions about it they have no idea what they're talking about.

Alabama high school sports: What Gadsden area coaches say in final on-field conversations

No matter how your season ends, every high school team has one final talk on the field.

Unfortunately for most Gadsden area teams , those talks were sad as only a few teams brought home Blue Map Trophies. Those talks follow a similar formula between all coaches and teams. You let the team know you're proud, reflect on the year, honor the seniors and state what's next.

Each coach does that speech in their own way and every time it's a little different, due to where the season ended, what they accomplished or what the seniors did and the legacy they have left. Multiple Gadsden area coaches talked about their philosophy going into those conversations.

SOUTHSIDE BOYS SOCCER: Southside boys soccer's Randy Vice looking forward to next season after Final Four appearance

More: Westbrook Christian to add softball in 2025, hires two-time state champ Chris Williams

One of the more important things is help put everything in perspective, especially after a major loss. Southside head boys soccer coach Randy Vice has come up with a interesting line that he said hopes reminds kids that the loss sucks at the time and nothing will change that but tomorrow is a new day.

"Guys this seems really bad but tomorrow Jack's is going to have sausage and biscuits, McDonalds is going to have great sweet tea. Your mom is still going to love you and we live in the greatest place in the world. So lets put things in perspective," Vice said.

Most coaches don't go into the conversation with anything planned, because only in a few games, you don't know that you're season is going to end that day. Even with that in mind, the difficult conversation doesn't need a script, you say what comes to mind says Plainview softball head coach Jeff Brooks, who has been on the joyous and sad side of that conversation over the last two years.

"There's nothing you can say, it just whatever. You never know what you're going to say in those situations, you just try to do the best you can," Brooks said.

It's also important to remind players that what they are feeling sucks but there is a bright side for most spring sports, summer training starts soon. Piedmont softball coach Rachel Smith likes to remind her players that while that moment and feelings suck, in a few weeks they can use those feelings for good, by getting better to avoid feeling that way again.

"These talks are hard, I think this game is a game of failure, today we failed, we didn't get to where we wanted to be. I think you use that feeling as motivation when you go back to work in three weeks. This feeling that we have, this awful sad feeling, say I don't want to feel this again, I'm going to start working," Smith said.

2 teens die in suspected drownings after accepting dare, jumping off bridge into lake

Authorities believe the teens were challenged to jumped off a bridge and swim back to shore..

Two South Carolina teens were found dead in suspected drownings after they were challenged with a dare to jump into a lake over the weekend, authorities said.

Pickens County Coroner's Office confirmed Rayan Al-Nasser, 16, and Zakaria Chaar, 15, were found late Monday morning in 15 feet of water and about eight feet apart, per The Greenville News, part of USA TODAY Network. Al-Nasser was found at 10:20 a.m. and Chaar 10 minutes later.

According to Pickens County Sheriff’s Capt. Brett Barwick, a caller reported Saturday at 10:28 p.m. that three teens jumped into Lake Hartwell, and two could not be located.

When deputies arrived, a boater had already pulled one of the teens from the lake. Emergency teams searched the area on Sunday and Monday.

Teen killed: 14-year-old among four people killed in multi-vehicle crash on I-75 in Georgia, police say

Authorities believe the teens were dared to jump off a bridge into the water

Barwick said the teens likely jumped into the lake as a challenge after being dared. WHNS reported that they were discussing the challenge of jumping off the bridge and swimming back to shore in a group chat.

According to the official, "quite a few" other students may have also attempted the challenge but weren't injured.

Authorities said that after a group jumped into the water, one of them "immediately went into distress," according to Fox Carolina. Another teen tried to save him, but they didn't come back out of the water. Police were called to the scene, and the search began.

Signs on bridges at Lake Hartwell warn people not to jump off and into the water. Emergency management teams from Pickens, Anderson, Oconee, and Greenville counties, the Clemson University Emergency Management and Fire/EMS agencies assisted in the lake search near the Pike Road and Highway 133 area.

Barwick said the lack of visibility in the water made it challenging for the rescue teams to locate the victims.

High school offers condolences to their loved ones

Al-Nasser and Chaar were students at D.W. Daniel High School in Central.

"The School District of Pickens County (SDPC) is heartbroken to learn of the passing of two students from D.W. Daniel High School," a Pickens County School District spokesperson said in a news release.

"Our deepest condolences and prayers go out to the families, friends, and the entire D.W. Daniel High School community. The loss of these young lives is a profound tragedy, impacting not only their families but also their classmates, teachers, and the broader community. In times like this, our priority is to provide the necessary support and care to our students, staff, and families".

Al-Nasser played soccer at his high school

Al-Nasser's coach, Thomas Bonilla, posted a heartfelt message on Facebook, asking everyone to pray for his family during this difficult time.

"I feel blessed God allowed me to hug him and tell him how I proud I was of him one last time," Bonilla wrote. "I can’t imagine the world of pain his parents are going through right now but I wanted to make this post so those who were following the news are aware and 2. for those who pray to keep him in your prayers and his family. I would give up every trophy and even my life for him to be back with his family."
