monaco yacht registration

Yacht registration in Monaco is exclusively available for Monaco’s own citizens and residents. An annual levy must be paid, but there are no inspections – except a one-time classification certificate for vessels that are longer than 24 metres. Registrations in Monaco can be quite attractive from a fiscal perspective.

Where to Register Your Yacht Offshore: the Ultimate Guide

Fallback Image

Dateline: Belgrade, Serbia

For the person who has successfully opened an offshore bank account , got a second passport and is living the lifestyle of their dreams traveling the world, the time has come to move on to the next level of flag theory.  This new level is one where the focus shifts from acquisitions that are largely for diversification purposes toward purchases meant purely to improve your lifestyle – like boating.

For many who reach this stage, the next step is to combine travel and leisure by investing in the purchase of a yacht.

Unlike buying a new car – or even a house – buying a yacht is an investment of an international nature, and deciding upon the best country for yacht registration is a decision for which you need professional advice so you do not expose your assets to unnecessary taxes and liabilities. If you go into the process uneducated, your exciting new purchase might just become nothing more than a hole in the water into which you pour unnecessary amounts of money.

As with other international strategies, the country in which you register your yacht can have an enormous effect on the amount of money you will be able to save, as well as your freedom of travel. Some countries keep you from freely traveling to other jurisdictions, others charge high tax percentages or registration fees, and others do none of those things.

Choose Your Flag Wisely

When buying a yacht,  the choice of yacht flags is one of the most important decisions you have to make because it can have a direct effect on your privacy, taxes, and your exposure to liability. Just as you would create a corporate structure to protect your other assets, you should do the same when it comes to yacht registration.

For this reason, many boat owners opt to register their yacht in places like the Cayman Islands to avoid the onerous taxes and regulations of the United States and other western governments. Panama , with its favorable registration policies, is the largest ship registry in the world  with over 9,000 ships flying its flag.

However, it’s also very important to do your due diligence in selecting a country for yacht registration by working with a professional. Once your vessel is registered in a country, all of the country’s laws will apply to your boat. Many countries that have attractive tax structures have other issues that you’ll want to avoid, such as laws that require you to hire a crew completely composed of nationals from that country.

You will also want to register your yacht in a country that is well respected by the US and the EU. If you choose a country with a bad reputation, it can limit where you are allowed to travel, or at the very least, make you subject to more detentions and inspections.

The flag state has the responsibility to enforce regulations over vessels registered under its flag, so yacht registration under countries on the Paris Memorandum of Understanding (Paris MoU) on Port State Control’s black or gray list will come under more scrutiny in inspections. Because of this, a large majority of yachts are flagged in British Overseas Territories, known as the ‘Red Ensign Group’ — including Bermuda, Gibraltar and the Isle of Man.

These countries have acceptable safety regulations for travel in EU countries, while also having more attractive tax structures than the UK. In fact, company tax is set at 0% in the Channel Islands , the Isle of Man, the Cayman Islands, and Bermuda .

This is particularly useful for those who wish to spend time in European Union waters, as vessels owned or used by EU residents are subject to the EU’s Value Added Tax (VAT). Private yacht registration with a non-EU flag allows an owner to operate under a “temporary importation structure” which allows for 18 months free of these taxes or customs duties. After the 18 months are over, the boat owner can re-apply for this status.

Bearing this in mind, let’s take a look at some of my favorite countries for yacht registration.

1.The Cayman Islands

yacht-registration-cayman-islands

The Cayman Islands Shipping Registry is a favorite among people who own both pleasure and commercial yachts worldwide. This ship registry has been at the Port of George Town, Cayman Islands since 1903. There are two other ports in the Cayman Islands as well: The Creek in Canyon Brac and Bloody Bay in Little Cayman.

The Merchant Shipping Law, which was revised in 2016, is the governing legislation for all boats registered in the Cayman Islands. The law offers many different types of yacht registration, including full registration, interim registration, provisional registration, a ship under construction registration, and demise charter/bareboat registration. An owner who is having a vessel built might find this convenient so he or she can register it as a boat under construction and then change to full yacht registration later.

As I mentioned above, the Cayman Islands is a part of the Red Ensign Group. This means that getting your yacht registration in the Cayman Islands flags your vessels as a British Ship, granting it protection by the British Royal Navy.

Because time is crucial for so many people, the Cayman Islands Ship Registry (CISR) can also expedite the registration process for those who need to be registered immediately if they pay their expedition fee. In addition, the CISR has representative offices in Fort Lauderdale, London, Cannes, Athens, Tokyo, and Singapore where you can have ship registry certificates issued immediately if needed.

Yachts that are registered with the Cayman Islands as pleasure yachts and are not engaged in trade are granted a License to Cruise the water of the United States which will allow them to enter, depart, and cruise within U.S. waters. These vessels will only need to report to U.S. customs when entering the country or changing customs districts.

Assuming you meet all of the required qualifications, there are no restrictions or rules concerning the nationality of the master or the crew of your ship.   In addition to the Cayman Islands being a tax neutral environment, the jurisdiction provides vessel owners with banking facilities and directorship services.

Overall, vessels registered in the Cayman Islands benefit from all the privileges of the British flag, while simultaneously having the tax-free and confidentiality perks of the Cayman Islands.

2. The Netherlands

yacht-registration- netherlands

Many people consider Holland to be an ideal location for yacht registration because the country is flexible and straightforward, whereas most other European countries follow stricter rules and regulations. The registration process is fast compared to that of other countries and requirements are minimal.

To register under the Dutch flag, the process is easiest if you are either an EU citizen, Swiss, Norwegian, or own a company registered in the EU.

One of the main advantages of the Netherlands is that you can be registered under the Dutch flag in as little as three days. That is why Holland is typically preferred over countries like Italy, France, and Spain where there is a longboat registration process in addition to high registration fees. A lot of yacht owners solve this problem by registering under the Dutch flag. Taxes and registration requirements in the Netherlands are minimal, allowing the whole process to be completed in three days, assuming you meet the necessary criteria.

Boat owners do not have to be of Dutch nationality, nor do they have to have a residence in the country. The only documents you must have are an ID card or passport and you must provide proof of ownership of your boat. Because so little documentation is needed, renewing your yacht registration is also a fairly simple process.

The process is easiest, however, for people who are Dutch, Swiss, Norwegian or have a company based in the EU. If you are not Dutch, Swiss, or Norwegian, and if you do not have a company registered in the EU, you can still register by paying a fee to have a United Kingdom Ltd. set up in your name.

The Ltd. will cost you 349 EUR upfront and 249 EUR every year after that. Once the Ltd. is set up, you’ll receive your registration within three to five days. The documentation needed is still the same. It only costs about 299 EUR for yacht registration in Holland if you are an EU citizen. It costs 648 EUR for non-EU citizens and your registration license can be delivered overnight anywhere in the world. Those prices include everything from the taxes to the mandatory Dutch address and all the costs for shipping and consultation.

There is also no requirement to have your boat inspected, making the vessel documentation process even simpler.

Types of yacht registration under the Dutch flag:

     1.  Light registration

Light yacht registration is for people who want fast and easy registration for navigating EU waters. With light registration, you can only sail European Union waters and the length of your yacht may not exceed 24m.

    2.  Global registration

Global yacht registration is for yachts that will navigate outside of European Union waters, sail worldwide, or be engaged in commercial chartering. People with Global registration can sail worldwide. Global registration is also available to Swiss or Norwegian persons regardless of whether or not they have a company in the EU.

 3. The Marshall Islands

yacht-registration-marshall islands

The Marshall Islands ship registry was formed in 1988. In 2001, it was expanded to allow those with commercial and private yachts to register as well, which has made the Marshall Islands a popular place to register over the last sixteen years.

The jurisdiction has also gained a lot of recognition over the years by having regional offices in major maritime cities around the world, allowing them to provide same day service to anyone, regardless of the location or time zone in which they reside.

The Marshall Islands Registry is the third-largest in the world and you can register under a one or three-year program.

You must be a Marshall Islands citizen, national, or qualified foreign maritime entity to register in the Marshall Islands. The terms “citizen” and “national” refer to Marshall Islands corporations, limited liability companies, partnerships, and associations of individuals. (You can easily complete the process to have a Marshall Islands company registered in your name so you can register your ship there.)

Assuming you complete all the necessary documents and meet all requirements, you can have your ship registered within 24 hours; you can also register your yacht as a ‘ship under construction’ if needed. You can obtain a U.S. cruising permit as a boat registered in the Marshall Islands and commercially compliant yachts can charter in Europe. In other words, you are not confined to the waters of the Marshall Islands alone, which is convenient for those who want to see more of the world.

As long as you meet proper flag requirements, yachts measuring 18m or longer that weigh less than 500 gross tons can be chartered out for up to 84 days as a private yacht limited charter (PYLC).

In addition to being white-listed under Paris and Tokyo’s MoUs, the Marshall Islands also meets the flag criteria for a low-risk ship under the Paris New Inspection Regime. Additionally, the Marshall Islands has been a part of the U.S. Coast Guard’s Qualship 21 roster for 11 consecutive years.

The Marshall Islands Registry is low tax and respected worldwide; the country is a presidential republic in free association with the United States and enjoys similar benefits to its British Overseas Territory counterparts making it a great jurisdiction for yacht registration.

yacht-registration-cyprus

Cyprus is the third largest island in the Mediterranean after Sicily and Sardinia. The country’s ship registry ranks 10th in the world with a gross tonnage of over 21 million pounds.

A ship can be registered in Cyprus if more than 50% of the shares of the registering company are owned by a Cypriot or if your company is registered in the Republic of Cyprus. An offshore company can also be registered in Cyprus if the company’s control is in the hands of Cypriots.

The Republic of Cyprus can easily register your company under their flag so you can register your yacht there. The costs of yacht registration and management are the lowest in Europe , making the jurisdiction an ideal, convenient place for many owners to register their ship.

There are many tax benefits that come with yacht registration under the Cyprus flag. An owner whose ship is registered in Cyprus is fully exempt from income taxes from operations in international waters. Additionally, no tax is payable for the wages of the crew that operates in international waters. No tax is payable on any dividend received from a shipping company in Cyprus.

Cyprus has maritime offices around the world, allowing them to work with anyone anywhere at any time. Some of their main offices are located in New York, London, Rotterdam, Piraeus, Brussels, and Hamburg. Upon registering in one of these offices, you will have the benefits of flying an EU flag, which is respected worldwide. According to the  EU registry, “Sailing under EU flags demonstrates strength and represents a strong reputation.”

Like some of the other countries I have mentioned, Cyprus has been white-listed among the Paris and Tokyo MoUs, meaning it is a high-quality flag with low risk compared to many other countries who have been gray or black-listed.

It should also be noted that Cyprus is excluded from the “list of targeted flag states,” which is kept by the U.S. Coast Guard. Cyprus’s absence from the list means that inspections of the yacht with a Cypriot flag are kept to a minimum and they will experience no unnecessary delays when entering and leaving ports.

Types of yacht registration:

Cyprus offers three types of registration, including provisional registration, permanent registration, and parallel (bareboat) registration.

       1. Provisional remains in effect for 6 months; after expiration, it can only be renewed once more for 3 more months.

       2. Permanent Yacht Registration  goes into effect 6 to 9 months from the date your yacht was provisionally registered.

      3. For Parallel / Bareboat Registration  your ship must hoist the Cyprus flag and “Limassol” must be marked as your port of registry. Parallel-in lasts for two years and is renewable. For parallel-out registration, your ship must hoist the foreign flag rather than the Cyprus flag and your port of registry must be the port of the foreign country. Parallel-out lasts for three years and is also renewable.

yacht-registration-liberia

Liberia is the oldest democracy in Africa and one of the first offshore, zero tax jurisdictions. The Liberian ship registry is a favorite among owners of large vessels; the country has the second-largest registry in the world and makes up 12% of registered ships worldwide.

One of the perks of The Liberian Yacht Registration is that it is open to any ship-owner in the world and there are absolutely no restrictions on the nationality of your crew or country of construction. This makes Liberia appealing to many ship-owners who either cannot register somewhere because of their nationality or can only register by paying an additional fee.

Liberia has been white-listed on the Paris and Tokyo MoUs and has also been approved by the International Maritime Organization AND the U.S. Coast Guard. This, combined with the country’s other features, means that the Liberian Registry is known as “the world’s largest quality registry, renowned for excellence, efficiency, safety and innovative service”.

The following types of vessels can be registered in Liberia:

Vessels under construction, new buildings, vessels being transferred from other flags, offshore vessels, vessels in lay-up, and vessels involved in international, coastal, or domestic trading. You may also have a dual flag if your ship is bareboat registered.

The Liberian Registry is owned and operated by the United States. Additionally, service is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, making things very convenient for those wishing to do yacht registration under the Liberian flag. There are over 400 nautical inspectors, so there is always someone available to attend to vessels.

Vessels registered in Liberia are taxed with a fixed fee, which   depends on the tonnage of your ship. The tax is applied yearly, so there should be no surprises. However, t here are no taxes on operations and your profits are not assessed.

The Liberian flag is accepted in many EU countries — the United Kingdom, Germany, and Holland are only a few countries in the European Union that accept the Liberian flag. In addition, Liberia is highly rated for safety and accident prevention, which makes this country even more attractive for your yacht registration.

Liberia is recognized every year for having high standards. The country has an above-average performance in safety and accident prevention as well as in independent statistical reports. Liberia also has a network of 100 security inspectors to inspect ships when necessary; this is something that was implemented post-9/11.

According to information provided by the Liberian Registry website, “The “Maritime Services Award” is for exceptional achievement or contribution to any service sector of the America’s maritime industry by a company, individual, or organization. According to Lloyd’s List criteria for this award, “The winner must be able to demonstrate how they have set themselves apart, going above and beyond best practice to offer the shipping industry something exceptional.”

Malta citizenship by investment cost

The Maltese ship registry is the largest in Europe and one of the largest in the world; it is one of the most popular countries in the world for pleasure yacht registration. The country has EU compliant legislation, clear laws relating to yacht mortgages, low registration costs and is well respected across the globe.

Malta became a member of the European Union in 2004, so yacht registration here comes with the perks of sailing an EU flag, including protection by the British Royal Navy. Like the other countries I’ve mentioned, Malta has been white-listed, providing ship-owners with a sense of security when you go through the yacht registration process under the Maltese flag.

If you’re an EU, EEA, or Swiss national, you can hold your vessel in your personal capacity. However, if you’re a non-EU/EEA/Swiss citizen you must hold your yacht through a Maltese or foreign company.

When it comes to taxes, it is important to note that companies operating commercial yachts out of Malta are exempt from income tax on any income generated by the operation of their yachts. They are also exempt from any VAT tax on the high seas. What   sets Malta apart from many other countries besides tax policy is that there are no restrictions on the nationality of the master, officers, or crew of your ship.

Another perk that Malta shares with Liberia is that there is round-the-clock service, so you can feel safe and secure registering in the country. And, as long as you meet all flag requirements, any type of vessel can be registered — that means pleasure yachts, oil rigs, vessels under construction, and anything in between.

W hen it comes to the age or trading, boats between 10 and 15 years must pass inspection by an authorized inspector within one month of provisional registration and ships over 15 years old must pass inspection before being provisionally registered.

7. The British Virgin Islands

yacht-registration-british-virgin-islands

The British Virgin Islands is the latest country to join the Red Ensign Group (2014). Now, the British Virgin Islands can register any type of ship and any size. Not only that, yacht registration under the BVI flag grants access to all the ports in the world. There are restrictions with almost all other registries when it comes to this, so the fact that a BVI flag gives you access anywhere sets the country far apart from the rest.

Another advantage that makes the jurisdiction one of the most attractive is that the British Virgin Islands is tax neutral. The islands are outside the scope of the EU value added tax (VAT) laws, meaning that there is no sales tax when purchasing goods or services.

As is the case with the Cayman Islands and Malta, the Red Ensign Group flag grants protection by the British Royal Navy to those vessels registered under the British Virgin Islands flag. Similar to the other countries listed, you can register under the BVI flag even if you are not a citizen and even if you do not own a company there; you will need to register a company in the BVI to do so, but this can be completed in a matter of hours.

When it comes to the registration process, it usually takes two to six months, meaning that it is not as short as some of the other countries, but it’s still not too terribly long.

As I have mentioned in previous articles, the British Virgin Islands has one of the most stable governments and economies in the world, which makes ship owners who register there feel very safe and secure when compared to other countries who have more enemies or corruption within the government.

yacht registration-panama

Panama  is not only a popular place when it comes to offshore banking or getting a second passport, it also holds the largest ship registry in the world, having over 9,000 ships registered under the country’s flag.

Most countries require a minimum amount of weight, but Panama does not. The only exception to this rule is if your ship is older than 20 years, requiring that the ship is inspected in order to be registered.

There is usually some downtime when someone transfers their ship from one flag to another, but that is not the case when you are transferring to Panama. Panama has a very simple transferring process; for example, numerous other countries make you dry dock for inspection and Panama does not. Because their process is so easy, it eliminates the concern that ship and business owners have concerning downtime.

The good news for all the shipping companies, ship owners, and merchant shipping companies is that you can have dual ship registry in Panama, but if you were registered in the other country first, you must have consent from that country to register in Panama, too.

Instead of taking your ship’s size or tonnage into consideration, Panama charges a flat yacht registration fee to keep things simple. If you are not a Panamanian or an owner of a Panamanian business, you’ll pay a flat fee of $1,500 to register your yacht. If you are Panamanian, it costs $1,000 to register your yacht. Once you are registered, you will have access to Panama’s round-the-clock service.

Additionally, once you are assigned provisional yacht registration, you have six months to provide the proper vessel documentation to transfer your provisional yacht registration to permanent registration. Your yacht registration certificate is valid for two years and renewal costs are low.

Many countries require yacht owners to pay taxes when they register their ship, but Panama does not. There are also no taxes on profit that is made through international trade. You do not have to pay taxes on wages for your crew members either. The main reason people choose to register in Panama is this lack of taxes. When registering in Panama, people are legally reducing tax costs and that would not be the case if they were to register in many other jurisdictions.

There is no one best ship registry in the world, but there are many you can choose from to keep your investment safe. Finding the right one for you will depend on what you value when it comes to naval protection, taxes, privacy, and ease of travel.

If you have already registered your vessel, where did you choose to go for your yacht registration and would you recommend it to others? Feel free to comment below.

Exclusive Yacht-Based Experiences, Principality Of Monaco

There are several spectacular events that take place in the principality. These include:

Rolex Monte-Carlo Masters

The Rolex Monte-Carlo Masters takes place every April and is a popular sporting event with tennis enthusiasts. The Monte-Carlo Masters is the first of three ATP World Tour Masters 1000 tournaments played on clay and is set against a stunning backdrop of the Mediterranean Sea at the Monte-Carlo Country Club. The best way to enjoy this eight-day tournament is aboard a luxury yacht charter, offering a private and exclusive escape. A luxury Monaco yacht charter is also an ideal option for corporate hospitality.

Formula One Monaco Grand Prix

The Monaco Grand Prix is without question one of the highlights on the annual Monaco events calendar, taking place every June. The principality comes to life as the streets are transformed into one of Formula One’s most exciting racetracks, and extravagant parties are held at VIP destinations across the principality. During this prestigious event, Monaco yacht charters are in exceptionally high demand, with prime berths located in Port Hercules just meters from the legendary track.

Monaco Yacht Show

The most exclusive shops can be found around the Carre d’Or in Monte-Carlo, along the Monte-Carlo Shopping Promenade. Getting around Monaco

A superb infrastructure ensures getting around Monaco is effortless, with multiple options available, including by foot, bicycle, or limousine.

The principality has ambitious aims to reduce its greenhouse gases and has therefore invested heavily in multiple eco-friendly modes of transportation.

Monaco’s small size means that reaching most destinations is possible by foot, with beautifully maintained footpaths, underpasses, elevators, and lifts, enhancing the city-state’s accessibility.

By electric bike

For those wishing to traverse the principality by pedal power, the Monabike scheme offers electric bikes, with 43  bicycle docks strategically located throughout the principality, providing access to nearly 390 electric bicycles.

By limousine

One of the most exclusive and private ways to travel in Monaco is by private limousine. There are several limousine companies offering a fleet of luxury executive cars for a personalized VIP service.

Monaco culture

Monaco has a rich and varied culture heavily influenced by its neighbors, France and Italy. Many of the principality’s residents are ex-pats, with a significant portion from France, Italy, the UK, Belgium, and Switzerland. Only around one in five residents are of Monegasque descent. This vibrant mix of residents creates a rich tapestry of cultures.

Monaco’s official language is French; however, English is widely spoken. You’ll also hear Monaco’s traditional language, ‘Munegascu,’ or ‘Monegasque’ a language which has its roots in Genoese. The Principality is governed by Prince Albert II, the hereditary ruler who ascended to the throne following his father’s death in 2005.

Monaco Yacht Club: An Exclusive Oasis For Marine Lovers

10 stories about the districts of Monaco

Looking down on the Yacht Club from Monaco’s exclusive seawater Spa, “ Thermes Marins ”, the new club-house really is a magnificent icon of multi-decked architecture – inaugurated in 2014 and designed by internationally renowned architect Lord Norman Foster.

Only in the Principality’s marina could you confuse this giant structure for the yachts around it that it resembles – a yacht mirage with a gorgeous deck with luxurious swimming pool and terraces for dancing. Splendid enough for meetings of the most discerning yacht enthusiasts, including the glitterati and “Three Comma” billionaires that frequent it.

Yachts Beyond the Reach of Mere Mortals

Some of the largest and most expensive yachts in the world dock here to take in the city’s pleasures, particularly during the iconic Monaco Yacht Show. You can wander around marvelling at all of the gadgets designers can inlay on these boats like the 348-foot-long AMADEA one of the largest and most distinctive superyachts in the world with its six distinctive guest decks. Or perhaps gaze at the 365-foot-long TIS, one of the largest and most regal yachts to be launched this year.

These superyachts, like the Yacht Club itself are like private islands and wouldn’t look out of place in a James Bond movie. If billionaires Bernard Arnault or Larry Page or Larry Ellison come calling, Monaco Yacht Club sets the stage perfectly.

Home of the Grimaldi Dynasty

For over 600 years from the 12th century onwards, the Grimaldi stronghold at Port Hercule, including where the Yacht Club now preens itself, was one of the prized naval assets on the Mediterranean. Its strategic location served more than once to change the course of history.

It was around the time of the reign of Charles III of Monaco that the Principality’s reputation as an international haven of luxury and wealth took off. And Charles III had the vision to encourage the development of Monaco as a magnet for international regattas of renown to which the world flocked.

Historic Regatta Heaven

The first of these regattas were held in the bay of Monaco in 1862, so successful that in 1888 the “Société des Régates” was established by Prince Charles III and his son Prince Albert I , affectionately known as the “Oceanographer Prince”.

Almost a century of famous regattas preceded the founding in 1953 by Prince Rainier and presided over by Prince Albert II since 1984, the Yacht Club de Monaco. The Club brings together more than 2000 members from 66 nationalities. Many of the world’s most prestigious private yachts fly the Yacht Club de Monaco’s burgee, testimony to its unique position in the International yachting world.

Prince Albert’s Presidency

In April 1984, with Prince Albert’s Presidency, he developed new international events such as the Primo Cup, the biggest gathering of monotype yachts in the Mediterranean Sea. Prince Albert also put emphasis on classic Yachting with the organization from 1994 of the Monaco Classic Week for vintage and classic yachts, the Prada Challenge for Classic Yachts.

Notably, it was the first visit of Atlantic 2010 (replica of the 1903 three-mast schooner on which Charlie Barr in 1905 set the best time for an Atlantic crossing) to the Principality. Another icon, the SS Delphine (1921) steam-boat made a welcome return. It was aboard this beauty that three world leaders, Stalin, Roosevelt and Churchill, negotiated at least part of the 1945 Yalta Agreement.

Yacht Seasons are typically opened with ultra-private concerts at YCM with celebrities like Sir Elton John in 2016, Duran Duran in 2017, and Sting last year. It was yet another global star Lionel Richie singing “All Night Long” this September who delighted the many boat owners and YCM members. “All Night Long” was attended by YCM President, Prince Albert II and a host of international personalities including actor-producer Samuel L. Jackson, basketball legend Magic Johnson, Manchester United midfielder Paul Pogba and fashion designer Domenico Dolce, one of the two behind the eponymous brand D&G.

Regatta and Sports Heaven with a Golden Future

The Monaco Yacht Club from its beginnings embraced and has nurtured a prestige Regatta program that has accelerated and taken on new dimensions under Prince Albert’s Presidency.

It is worth mentioning the Primo Cup again as it has quickly established itself as the big meeting that opens the season in the Mediterranean for Europe’s one-design elite. Just a few other examples of stand-out Regattas enjoyed by YCMmembers include:

Monaco Swan One Design,  (9th-13th April 2019) organized in conjunction with the Yacht Club de Monaco,  was the first event in the 2019 Nations Trophy Mediterranean League.

Monaco Globe Week with the IMOCA 60  – 60-foot monohulls being among the fastest modern racing monohulls have raced on a course totalling 1,300 nautical miles embracing some of the most emblematic marks in the Western Mediterranean.

Monaco Sportsboat Winter Series  offers a monthly programme alternating high level regattas and training weekends for onedesigns.

As well as the Primo Cup another innovation worth a double mention here is  Monaco Classic Week. Persuaded that the reading of the past holds keys for the future Prince Albert fostered the creation and coordination during five years of a unique circuit for vintage and classic yachts, the Prada Challenge for Classic Yachts, without forgetting the acquisition of Tuiga in 1995, since becoming the flagship of the YCM. More recently the wave continued with the launching in 2005 of the “La Belle Classe” label.

The whole yachting world continues to look to Monaco to organize its most prestigious events. Within the last 12 months, 200 guests from the America’s Cup community from around the world gathered at the Yacht Club de Monaco to celebrate the launch of  the Prada Cup – the Challenger Selection Series for the 36th America’s Cup  to be presented by Prada in January 2021 in Auckland – deemed as “ the quest for oldest trophy in sport ”, the America’s Cup. Not to forget  World Rowing with the  Prince Albert II Challenge , a 6000m coastal race organised by the Societe Nautique de Monaco.

The Enthusiasm and Promise of Monaco’s Youth at YCM

Looking to the future is the Monaco Sports Academy which provides support to gifted young Monaco sailors and sportsmen taking on the world. The Academy is a close collaboration between the Yacht Club de Monaco, presided by Prince Albert and its General Secretary Bernard d’Alessandri, and Philippe Ghanem who is an active member of the Club. They share a common goal: to help young athletes living in Monaco reach the highest level in sport.

Also founded in 1970 by Prince Rainier III, the Sports Section of Y.C.M. adapts training to youngsters from as young as age six from initiation to competition and at every age.

Look out for the Monaco Optimist Team Race from 9-12 January 2020. The regatta is reserved for 20 teams of young sailors, all under 14. YCM invites the most competitive clubs with emphasis on tactics and above all team-work.

Full of youthful energy and promise is  the Monaco Solar & Energy Boat Challenge  next held on 30 June-4 July 2020. The Yacht Club de Monaco, in collaboration with the International Powerboating Federation (UIM) and Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation organises the Solar & Energy Boat Challenge which is unique in the world.

How to become a new member of the Yacht Club

Anyone wishing to become a member of the Yacht Club de Monaco needs to be introduced by two “sponsors” from YCM. The sponsor’s letter of introduction will explain the applicant’s motives for joining the Club. Prince Albert, President of the Yacht Club, presides over the meetings of the admissions’ committee. The role of the sponsor is essential. The latter, must integrate him into the life of the Yacht Club, accompany him, present him to the other members but also involve him in organized events, whether they be social or sports.

The sponsor also undertakes to ensure that his “protégé” embraces the YCM’s philosophy and values, will actively engage in the Club’s life and keep its reputation at the pinnacle.

A Regal Club and Natural Host of Prestigious Events

The Yacht club reaches well beyond being a club for owners of yachts and superyachts. It is actually an immense infrastructure akin to a multi-tiered island that organises not only events connected to the yachts and regattas but also all kind of sports and social events, dances and entertainment. High society balls, conferences, exclusive business gatherings and prestigious auctions are just part of the kaleidoscope of activity.

The members of the club and their guests have at their disposition restaurants with Michelin Star chefs (including the exclusive 1909) gyms and a library – and a spa-zone, not to mention the gorgeous pool and terraces overlooking the azure bay. There is a truly great bar, a hive of social contact, with an international reputation and winner of awards for its unique cocktails and the skills of its bar staff. Endless discovery is to be found in each private niche of this island-club.

The largest yachts attending the Monaco Yacht Show 2024

The highlight of the superyacht calendar, every year the Monaco Yacht Show attracts the latest and greatest builds from around the world. Over 20 entries in the 50-metre-plus range have already been confirmed, with the show set to return to Port Hercule from 25 to 28 September.

BOAT takes a closer look at the biggest yachts both in the port and at anchor, beginning with the largest yacht to ever attend the Monaco Yacht Show...

Length : 122m Builder : Lürssen

This year's headliner is also one of the industry's latest deliveries. Kismet was handed over to her owner Shahid Khan in May 2024, who previously owned the 95.2-metre Lürssen yacht Whisper (formerly Kismet ). His new yacht reunites him with Reymond Langton Design for the interior, but the exteriors on the new build have been helmed by Nuvolari Lenard . She's now one of the world's most expensive yachts for charter , asking a staggering €3,000,000 per week with Cecil Wright & Partners . And no wonder, with a helipad, beauty salon, indoor and outdoor cinema, dance floor and gym at guests' fingertips.

Renaissance

Length : 111.9m Builder : Freire

It took four decades of experience and imagination and two generations of the Bannenberg design dynasty to make   Renaissance a reality. Both the largest private yacht built in Spain and one of the world's most expensive charter yachts , the superyacht is quite the feat for Freire as a commercial shipyard that has built only one private yacht in the past. Renaissance has 7,200 GT to play with and rises to the challenge with one deck dedicated to the owner and another to wellness, made complete with a sauna, ballet bar and a spacious gym with an equipment list that would "amaze an elite athlete" according to Burgess.

Renaissance is available for charter with Burgess from $3,000,000 per week.

Length : 90.1m Builder : Oceanco

Luiz de Basto first dreamt up Dar ' s sinuous, shark-inspired design eight years before her delivery, while seated in his Miami office overlooking Biscayne Bay. Dar features around 390 square metres of glass in her superstructure alone, not counting the doors and hull windows. Once inside, the result is said to be like floating in mid air. Standout features include an owner's deck – complete with private saloon and Jacuzzi – as well as a wellness area, with Hammam, sauna and massage room. She won Motor Yacht of the Year at the 2019 World Superyacht Awards and was recently selected to be BOAT International 's charter yacht of the week . The superyacht is making her return to the Monaco Yacht Show after first appearing in Port Hercule shortly after delivery.

Dar is asking €208,000,000 with Large Yacht Corp .

Length : 85.3m Builder : SilverYachts

Billed as a "sports activity vessel", explorer yacht Bold was delivered by the Australian yard in 2019 and sports a striking, military-inspired exterior by Espen Øino . A cruising range of 5,000 nautical miles and provisions storage for up to five months means that Bold can certainly handle going off the grid. But, with her huge toy locker and open aft deck that functions as a waterside chillout zone, the superyacht really thrives in warmer climes. She is a popular charter yacht , with a variety of watertoys and a vast outdoor entertaining area complete with a bar and Teppanyaki grill, a cinema, an eight-person hot tub and a lounge surrounding a firepit.

Bold is available for charter with Hill Robinson from €875,000 per week.

Length : 80m Builder : Oceanco

Delivered in 2007, Aalto marked a "new era" for Oceanco's 80-metre-plus division. The superyacht was equipped with a series of features that were virtually non-existent on board yachts of the time, including a heated swimming pool, a massage room, a helipad and a stabilised pool table. Accommodation is provided for a party of 12 in eight cabins, with her owner's suite taking up almost half of the upper deck and boasting two Jacuzzis and a Portuguese bridge. Aalto has had numerous refits, most recently in 2022 and 2024.

Aalto is asking €79,750,000 with Burgess , Edmiston and Y.CO .

Length : 78.4m Builder : Abeking & Rasmussen

Chandeliers, Macassar ebony furniture and custom floral panels: Amaryllis is a five-deck superyacht best known for her dazzling display of Reymond Langton -designed Art Deco decor. She can sleep twelve guests across six cabins, including an owner's cabin with a clawfoot bed, lime marble en suite and 180-degree ocean views. Standout features include a piano lounge and a cinema suite, while her beach club boasts a dedicated spa with a sauna, steam room, plunge pool and massage room. Amaryllis last underwent a major refit in 2019 and will be looking fresh on the docks during the 2024 Monaco Yacht Show.

Amaryllis is asking €89,000,000 with Moravia Yachting .

Length : 77.8m    Builder: Amels

Tasked with a brief to "defy convention and find ways to connect with the ocean", naval architect Espen Øino and interior designer François Zuretti came together to create Energy . The design duo first worked together on Blohm & Voss ' 74.5-metre Eco , now Zeus , with Martin Francis in the 1980s. The superyacht has an impressive volume of 2,885GT which houses accommodation for 14 guests, an upper deck aft pool, a spacious gym, a large beach club with spa and a glass elevator, to name a few. She has only been used privately since new and was recently selected as BOAT International 's brokerage boat of the month .

Energy is asking €199,000,000 with Burgess and Cecil Wright and Partners .

Length : 73.3m    Builder : SilverYachts

Dragonfly was hailed as the fastest, most fuel-efficient long-range cruiser when she was delivered in 2009, with a transatlantic range of 22 knots. Her streamlined exterior and elongated bow sprung from the boards of Espen Øino , while her rich, ambient interiors are by Danielo Silvestrin . Dragonfly 's outdoor cinema, large sunpad that can convert into a dance floor and swim platform – dubbed the "ultimate toy launchpad" by the broker – are the major crowd pleasers. She was also commended for her contribution to the disaster relief effort in Vanuatu after Hurricane Pam devastated the island in 2015.

Dragonfly is asking €27,000,000 with Y.CO .

Planet Nine

Length : 73.2m Builder: Admiral - The Italian Sea Group

Admiral's Planet Nine boasts an ice-classed steel hull, a range of 6,000 nautical miles and a bold, militaristic exterior by British designer Tim Heywood . Her interiors were custom built by German luxury outfitter Fitz and feature accommodation for up to 16, including an owner's suite with balconies and a VIP cabin with a private outdoor space on the bridge deck. Exterior and interior relaxation options are also plentiful, including a large beach club designed for use in both warm and cool climates and a sundeck spa pool. Planet Nine recently underwent a comprehensive refit and is best known to the public for her starring role in Christopher Nolan's time-bending thriller Tenet . She will be the largest explorer yacht attending the Monaco Yacht Show.

Planet Nine is asking €79,500,000 with Fraser .

Length : 67.5m Builder : Icon Yachts

The Instagram-famous superyacht Loon (ex Icon ) is sure to draw the crowds in Port Hercule this year. She was delivered in 2010 as the flagship of the Dutch shipyard, with an exterior design by RWD and clean, contemporary interiors by Studio Linse . A raised main deck pool is one of her many highlights with two panels of glass that filter natural light into the beach club below. A bar, gym, massage room and sauna are also found at this level. Loon was sold to a new owner in April 2023, after which she joined the charter fleet.

Loon is available for charter with IYC from €540,000 per week.

Length : 67m Builder : Benetti

The American owners of Calex previously owned a string of Westport s, until they decided they wanted a "50-metre on steroids". Westport was unable to oblige at the time, and a visit on board a friend's yacht – the 61-metre Diamonds are Forever – made them realise they wanted Benetti to build it. Calex is a full-custom project, with the owner's deck a definite highlight. It occupies 160 square metres and features a bar and a private, open-air lounge forward. The owners also requested that the crew quarters include materials and furnishings of a similar quality to those used in the guest accommodation. Exterior design is by Giorgio M. Cassetta .

Length : 63.5m Builder : Benetti

Lioness V will surely be drawing large crowds at Port Hercule this year with her long, sweeping windows and well-balanced profile. However, the superyacht is best known for her opulent interiors, including guest areas inlaid with mother of pearl and Crema Marfil stone. The sundeck is Lioness V 's social hub, arranged with al fresco dining, an automated golf Tee-It driving range, a plunge pool and sunpads and loungers galore. A cinema room, fully equipped gym, media room and study ensure that guests remain entertained in all seasons. She joined the market for the first time in September 2023.

Lioness V is asking €45,000,000 with Camper & Nicholsons and Merle Wood & Associates .

Length : 63m   Builder : Benetti

Artisan may be based on Benetti’s proven platform, but the commissioning owner’s request for an extra deck has made her one of a kind. The superyacht clinched a Neptune at the 2020 World Superyacht Awards and features a number of unconventional amenities, including an asymmetric upper saloon with a grand piano, Fendi furniture and a bar sculpted from Bianco Statuario marble. The master suite is a real highlight, measuring 160 square metres and overlooking a private bow terrace with intimate seating and sunpads. Owners can also enjoy an attached office and lounge area, two dressing rooms and two interconnected bathrooms.

Artisan is asking €59,750,000 with Royal Yacht International.

Length : 62m Builder : Viareggio Superyachts (VSY)

Another Espen Øino design, Sealion accommodates 12 guests across six cabins, including an owner's suite with a raised layout for panoramic views and"spa-like features", including a Jacuzzi tub. Meanwhile, a cinema room in the skylounge and her two-level sundeck – complete with a bar, Jacuzzi, sunpads and mist options – are ready to entertain guests. The superyacht's previous name, Candyscape II,  alludes to her eclectic interiors courtesy of Candy & Candy studio . Highlights include a spectacular Schimmel glass grand piano in the main saloon and an ornate glass lift that links the lower deck to the bridge deck. She was recently selected as BOAT International 's charter yacht of the week .

Sealion is POA with Denison Yachting .

Length : 61.5m Builder : Sanlorenzo

Making an appearance at the Monaco Yacht Show 2024, Lemon Tree was delivered in 2021 as the first Sanlorenzo 62Steel. What sets this superyacht apart is her owner's cabin, fitted with a private deck and pool and an adjoining sky lounge, which can be converted into a family cinema. Another highlight of this yacht is the large Hammam and beach club, which has openings on three sides and a glass ceiling that filters natural light through the pool. Accommodation is for a party of 14 guests in seven cabins – one of which can be turned into a massage room.

Lemon Tree is asking €59,500,000 with Y.CO .

Length : 59.8m Builder : CRN

Aifer (ex Ramble on Rose ) was delivered in 2011 to a sculptural design by Zuccon International Project . In May 2019, she emerged from an extensive refit at Icon Yachts , benefitting from a completely new exterior paint job and various interior improvements including a new bridge. At the time, Icon Yachts' project manager Jacob de Boer described her as "a one of a kind Italian yacht" with "a Dutch quality refit finish". Accommodation is across six cabins, comprising a master suite located on the main deck with an office, his and hers walk-in wardrobes, sofa area and balcony.

Aifer is asking €31,500,000 with Camper & Nicholsons and IYC .

Length : 60m Builder : Amels

Entourage won big this year, cinching a BOAT International Design & Innovation Award and a Neptune at the World Superyacht Awards . While the first hull in the series, Come Together , features distinctive geometric windows, the design team customised this second Amels 60 with long strips of glazing that allow additional light into the interior. Another noteworthy design choice is the extended bridge deck and sundeck which, first requested by the owner, has now been implemented in all subsequent builds. It was this "fantastic evolution" that swayed the judges, though they were also impressed by Entourage 's clever use of space, including her optimised storage.

Entourage is available to charter with Moran Yacht & Ship from €435,000 per week.

Length : 60m Builder : Lürssen

Another World Superyacht Awards winner, Caipirinha picked up the coveted Motor Yacht of the Year Award in 2010. She was designed by Espen Øino and Mark Berryman and has a "versatile" layout, according to the broker – including a formal saloon that can be converted to a cinema via a hidden screen and projector. Other highlights include a formal dining room for 14 guests and a sundeck arranged with a Jacuzzi, a gym, an onyx-topped bar and a casual lounge area. This is not her first yacht show appearance, but her German pedigree and impressive design credentials will make her worth a visit in Monte Carlo during the boat show.

Caipirinha is asking $59,990,000 with Burgess and SuperYachtsMonaco .

Pink Shadow

Length : 58m Builder : Damen Yachting

Delivered last summer, Pink Shadow is an eye-catching new entry in the SUV (Sports Utility Vessel) sector and the first unit in the Dutch shipyard's 58M Xplorer series. The superyacht is widely known for her richly coloured, eclectic Design Unlimited interiors, inspired by the Amazonian adventure-drama Fitzcarraldo . Highlights include a crocodile-teeth table, neon wall hangings and "The Habana Room", an upper deck cigar lounge made complete with a bespoke humidor. However, it was her fun, multi-functional exterior that won her a BOAT International Design & Innovation Award earlier this year.

Diamond Binta

Length : 58m Builder : Tankoa Yachts

This full-custom superyacht was launched in late June, making her one of the newest entries on this list of yachts at the Monaco Yacht Show 2024. Diamond Binta was designed by long-time collaborator Francesco Paszkowski Design for a repeat Tankoa client, who previously owned the 50-metre Binta D'Or (now Sp1 ). Leisure highlights include a forward helideck, a large beach club with a spa and a sundeck set up with a gym and pool. A glass-encased corridor stretches from the beach club to the cabins directly through the engine room, offering a glimpse at the inner workings of the superyacht.

Silver Star

Length : 55.3m Builder : Admiral - The Italian Sea Group

Silver Star has returned to Port Hercule following her official debut at the 2023 Monaco Yacht Show. The second hull in Admiral's S-Force series, she sets herself apart from sistership Geco with an interior designed by Giorgio Armani which incorporates ivory onyx, cornflower blue marble and Venetian printed silk. Stepping outdoors, Silver Star features a large open beach club with glass gunwales, a sundeck Jacuzzi and a touch-and-go helipad that doubles as a sunbathing spot. Accommodation is across six cabins, including an owner's suite and VIP cabin.

Silver Star is asking €35,000,000 with TWW Yachts.

Length : 55.3m Builder : Damen Yachting

She may be a support vessel, but Shadow was the first of her series to feature dedicated guest accommodation whilst still maintaining support yacht functionality. Key features include a 190 square metre aft deck helipad, which can support a maximum take-off weight of 3,700kg and extra accommodation for four staff, pilots, security or guides. Superyacht water toy storage is another one of her strong suits, as the deck crane can lift up to 12 tonnes – enough to launch a personal submarine.

Shadow is asking $16,722,769 with Superyacht Sales and Charter .

Length : 55m Builder : Heesen Yachts

Another Monaco Yacht Show debutante, Moskito made her grand entrance back in 2021. She has a "shark tooth" superstructure owed to Frank Laupman’s Omega Architects , while accommodation is for 12 guests across six Bannenberg & Rowell -styled cabins. This includes the master cabin, which measures a generous 82 square metres and is outfitted in a palette of "taupes, browns and creams". Moskito is a familiar face on the charter circuit and is best known for her beach club, which features a sauna, steam room and a plethora of watertoys for guests to choose from.

Moskito is available for charter with IYC from $350,000 per week.

Length : 54m Builder : Overmarine Group

Siniar will be a rare sight at this year's show as one of only three Mangusta GranSport 54 models on the water. The flagship yacht of the Italian shipyard, she has been built "to circumnavigate the globe with ease" according to the broker. Highlights include her large tinted windows which allow for airy interiors, accommodation for up to 12 guests including a full-beam owner's suite and storage for a Castoldi Jet Tender 21 and a variety of watertoys. The superyacht  has a maximum speed of 29 knots and a range of 4,200 nautical miles.

Siniar is asking €32,000,000 with Royal Yacht International.

Length : 54m Builder : Amels

Spirit 's attendance at this year's Monaco Yacht Show was confirmed shortly after she rejoined the brokerage market . Her previous sale, back in 2019, resulted in an unexpected refit with Dôme Project Interiors. Beginning with ambitions simply to move the furniture around, the small Swiss designer ended up stripping the interior back to bare walls and floors. And the most impressive part? It took just three months, at the height of restrictions over Covid-19. BOAT International was invited to see the results back in 2021 . Spirit originally had an interior by the renowned Nuvolari Lenard .

Spirit is asking €25,900,000 with Edmiston and Next Yachting.

Five Oceans

Length : 53.3m Builder : Damen Yachting

The aptly named and brightly painted Five Oceans was built to support owner Tommy Allen and his company, Five Oceans Global Solutions – an organisation dedicated to marine conservation, resource management and responsible deep-sea exploration. To this end, the support vessel has been decked out with a 15-tonne deck crane and a vast aft deck measuring nine metres across, making her more than capable of launching and recovering a variety of toys. Five Oceans can also carry anywhere between six and 16 guests or staff, depending on how the owner chooses to use the vessel.

Length : 52.7m Builder : Feadship

From the outside, she’s a classic Feadship; but on the inside, Adventure becomes a showcase of the masterful designs of Tino Zervudachi, the mind behind London’s National Gallery. Accommodation is across six cabins, outfitted in warm honey oak and striking artwork and furnishings in red, pink and blue hues . Other highlights include a piano lounge, an optional massage room and a barbecue, bar Jacuzzi and cinema setup on the sundeck. She was chosen as BOAT International 's charter yacht of the week earlier this year.

Adventure is available for charter with Y.CO from $250,000 per week.

Special One

Length : 52.5m Builder : Royal Huisman

With a towering, six-deck superstructure and a long flared bow, Special One will be hard to miss at this year's show. She is the largest sportfisher in the world and was commissioned by a passionate fisherman who plans to use the yacht to hunt larger predatory fish, including swordfish and marlin. Highlights include laser-powered exterior lighting and a viewing platform which allows guests to observe a dedicated fishing area. While Special One is now well known to the industry, her interiors have remained a closely guarded secret since her launch in February 2024.

Monaco is 1 of 6 locations hosting the star-studded E1 — a race thought ‘impossible’ before it began

M onaco's connection to car racing and boating is stamped all over it, from the hairpin turns of its Formula One circuit to the five-deck superyachts docked at Port Hercule.

But its desires to be known as a sustainability destination are less apparent.

Monaco's "Green is the New Glam" campaign, launched in 2018, highlighted many of the country's environmental efforts. And a 2023 tourism campaign named sustainability as one of three key pillars — alongside "Instagrammability" and digital nomad appeal — for attracting new travelers.

Its green goals are at odds with its greenhouse-gas-emitting superyachts and beloved Formula One races. The latter's carbon footprint amounted to more than 223,000 tons of carbon dioxide across the 2022 season, according to a Formula One report. But they do align with a new boating competition E1 which races 100% electric-powered speedboats.

Monaco is one of six locations hosting the competition, which launched in Saudi Arabia in February.

During the Monaco race on July 28, Bernard d'Alessandri, general secretary and managing director of Yacht Club de Monaco, said E1 showcases new technology for boat racing.

"Before E1, it was impossible to have a race with electric boats," he said. "E1 has proven you can."

Like a high-tech hummingbird

Nine teams, co-piloted by one man and one woman, are competing in Racebirds, fully electric speedboats custom-built for E1. Akin to a high-tech hummingbird, its small wings, head and body are punctuated by an extended nose and a sleek metallic exterior.

According to race organizers, the Racebird is a certified zero-emission boat, which doesn't release oil or fuel into the water and creates around half the noise and fewer waves than typical motorized boats — all of which can distress marine life.

Race organizers also use robotic anchorless buoys to mark courses, which don't damage seabeds like anchors do, said Rodi Basso, E1's CEO and co-founder, and a former Formula One engineer.

Since the first race, organizers have gradually reduced the time and shipping containers needed to host the races. Now they are working on building boats near race sites, rather than moving boats around for each competition, organizers said.

Basso said the race has already attracted the attention of important "stakeholders" in the country, including Prince Albert II of Monaco.

"They've seen we are serious about the values that we were trying to build," he said. "They care about the future of yachting."

Acceptance of electric boating among the elite

Racebird creator Sophi Horne said getting the attention of Monaco's boating elite wasn't easy.

She said very few people believed in the Racebird during its design phase. But the race changed that, she said, recalling a recent meeting with a megayacht designer in Monaco she has long admired.

"Sitting at his office with his naval architects going over the Racebird concept in detail, and for it to trigger a different way of thinking — that was huge for me," Horne said.

Horne is founder and chair of a separate company, Seabird, which focuses on electric powerboat design and development. She said she is now taking orders from local boating enthusiasts interested in going electric.

"They see the coolness of it, and they want something their buddies don't have," she said. "The Racebird is so different from what they've seen before … they want to know if we can make its baby sister, but something that will fit the whole family."

The celebrity factor

E1's celebrity factor is drumming up attention too — an intentional move for a race with boats that reach a top speed of 58 miles per hour, slower than Formula One H2O speedboats, which can go nearly 150 miles per hour.

The nine team owners — actor Will Smith, tennis player Rafael Nadal, singer Marc Anthony, NFL player Tom Brady, soccer star Didier Drogba, cricketer Virat Kohli, Formula One driver Sergio Perez, DJ/record producer Steve Aoki and billionaire businessman Marcelo Claure — are central characters in the races, with their names and faces emblazoned on marketing materials.

Brady and Drogba were spotted embracing at the VIP lounge in Monaco, after Brady's team made it to the top of the leaderboard following the fourth race of the season.

But team owners are called on to do more than just cheer on their boats. E1 requires both owners and teams play an active role in marine conservation. E1 will crown a winner not just of the championship itself, but of its conservation program, Blue Impact. Team Nadal is working to protect the endangered seagrass meadows found in the Mediterranean Sea, which surrounds his native Mallorca, and Monaco, too.

The celebrity factor also brings conservation awareness to the public, said professor Carlos Duarte, climate change scientist and E1's chief scientist.

"Having people like Tom Brady talk about committing themselves to ocean action has a huge influence on public engagement," he said. "Then we can talk about solutions, we can talk about new technology, we can talk about what the communities are doing in the cities that we race in."

The remaining two races in the E1 Series are scheduled to occur on Aug. 23 in Lake Como, Italy, followed by Hong Kong on Nov. 10.

Monaco is the fourth city to host the inaugural E1 series.

Information on boat location and ownership is obtained from the Department of Motor Vehicles, The U.S. Coast Guard, referrals from other counties and on-site inspections.

Boats used exclusively for commercial fishing, research or as a party boat may qualify for partial exemption. More information may be obtained by calling the contact information below.

Boat owners pay a registration fee to the Department of Motor Vehicles, but the personal property taxes are paid to the county where the boat is habitually moored or located.

Boat taxes are assessed on the unsecured tax roll. The tax bills are mailed at the end of June and payment is due by August 31 of that year.

Determining the Situs of Boat/Vessel

Section 14 of the California Constitution states, "All property taxed by the local government shall be assessed in the county, city, and district in which it is situated." Revenue and Taxation Code Section 1141 further provides that "boats shall be assessed where they are habitually moored when not in use". Domicile of the owner is the usual tax situs.

Registration information on boats comes directly from the Department of Motor Vehicles. Boats should be registered at the situs at which they are moored, and this will determine the taxing jurisdiction.

Proof of situs other than DMV registration of domicile could include, but is not limited to receipts of docking fees, proof of registration in another county or state, and/or a copy of an uncanceled current tax bill from another county for said boat.

Notification of Assessment

Upon discovery of your boat/vessel, the Assessor will mail you a "Notice of Vessel Assessment". This notice will provide you with the fair market value that will be enrolled for the upcoming lien date, January 1, and general information regarding the assessment of your vessel.
