About SOLING 1 METER

The Soling Class is the largest class affiliated with the American Model Yachting Association (AMYA). It is a one-design class. The One Meter was designed to be a low-cost, kit-based one-designed class primarily targeted at the beginning Radio-Controlled (R/C) sailor. It is often the local class that beginning sailors start with and yet it is challenging enough that most advanced racers still race their Soling. The hull, deck, keel, and rudder are made from vacuum formed polystyrene plastic. Only flat single-paneled sails are approved by the Soling Class. Only two channels are used to control the boat. One channel for both sails and the other channel for the rudder. Transmitter may have additional channels but they are not allow to be used in sanctioned races.

Sarasota Model Yacht Club

radio controlled soling sailboat

Welcome - About Us

radio controlled soling sailboat

The Sarasota Model Yacht Club got its start in Sarasota in 1996.  Our club sails the American Model Yachting Association-sanctioned one-design Soling One Meter R/C , RC Laser, DF65, DF95 and (during the winter only) IOM model yachts. The club meets six (seven times a week when the IOM sail) times per week for practice and racing. We sail at the  Nathan Benderson Park at  the West Lake on Athletes Drive.   The West Lake is off of Honore at Athletes Drive.

The Soling 1-Meter kit-based model is a pleasure to sail. As a one-design, it is an ideal introduction to model yachting, yet it provides a  competitive boat for the best of veterans as well and is available from  “ Boatyard John ” (our club builder).

The RCLaser is factory-built ready to sail and available at  intensitysails.com

We also sail the Dragon Force (DF) DF65 and the DF95 RC boats.

The DF 65 is one of the fastest growing class of RC sailboats in the U.S. The boat has earned this distinction by being a great one-design sailing boat while being the least expensive ready-to-sail boat on the market. At around $350 for a boat with radio and receiver and about 3 hours of assembly and you're on the water.

The DF95 is the fastest growing class in the USA and is near Ready-to-Sail in a kit form from  Radiosailing.net  or from “Boatyard John”.

All skill levels are welcome, from neophytes to crusty old salts! You will find that our members can be very helpful in getting you involved with this great hobby. Come on out to watch the hard-fought races or join us for practice and racing.

The Soling One Meter (S1M) :  This S1M the largest class in the U.S. and Florida. We sail Solings Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. Race Captains rotate throughout the year. Craig Collemer is the Race Captain.

The RC Laser :  This is the largest RC class in the world. We sail Lasers on Friday. Steve Lippincott is the Race Captain.

The DF65 and the DF95 :  These are the newest and fastest-growing restricted one-design class in both Florida and the U.S.

We sail DF95's on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. Bill Hendrickson is the Race Captain. The DF65 fleet sails Monday and Wednesday.  Rob Wucki is the Race Captain.

IOM The IOM Class is considered a Development Class by the AMYA.

The International One Metre class is the fastest-growing class in the world. This class is distinct and different in purpose from the US One Meter class, and complements the International Marblehead Class as a simpler, less expensive boat. The International class has a one-design rig, and has minimum weights on the keel and overall, and restricts the hull material. The net effect of these differences is that the typical cost spiral of lighter weight, and more expensive materials and manufacturing processes, is arrested. This allows amateur designers and builders a chance to design and build with little concern that they are building in a disadvantage due to weight. This is a feature not found in any existing AMYA class and is one of the reasons that the class is so popular around the world.  We sail IOM's on Sundays in season.  John Stryhn " Boatyard" is the Race Captain.

Entering The World Of Radio-Controlled Sailboat Racing

A weekend boater gets hung out to dry when she joins the enthusiastic fray of Radio Control Sailboat Racing.

Several white radio-controlled sailboats on the water

The Soling 1M is among 32 classes of remote-controlled sailboats governed by the American Model Yacht Association.

I don't know why I'm here. As I stand bundled up on the banks of the Genesee River among my Rochester Yacht Club pals, fingers frozen from snow and sleet, I am suddenly struck by the unfairness of it all. As competitors in the " Soling Series" regattas , we all start with a 1-meter remote-controlled sailboat, a controller, water, and wind. That's where the equality ends.

Most of my Soling buddies are serious sailors, and although I spent earlier years sailing on Lake Michigan, I haven't been at the helm of a sailboat for any length of time in the last 30 years. These sailors live to push both full-sized and meter-long hulls to their utmost. A few of the other club members spend their time on thoroughbred powerboats, zipping past me on Lake Ontario for a day-jaunt to Canada and back, treating it like just another rum run. Both groups are accustomed to speed, whether it be from wind or by means of fossil fuel. Wherever they go, their hair blows behind them in the breeze. I am a tugboat captain. At a top speed that seldom exceeds 6 knots, my hair does not "blow in the breeze.'' It stays perfectly straight. I don't "zip" anywhere.

I get chided, advised, and admonished pertaining to my handling of No. 70, a.k.a. Scout, my Soling craft. I swear I hear chuckles whenever my maneuvers don't match the task my vessel is supposed to perform. Cries of "Starboard, Angie!" ring in my ears as I desperately attempt to keep out of the way whenever I'm actually near other boats. I feel the smirks as I futilely try to keep No. 70 on a straight course when the wind picks up over 15 knots. I try to ignore the sidelong glances when I pull her out to tweak my stays and vang, as they all know I'm just pretending to know how to tune it. Each week I say a prayer to the Soling gods that my boat doesn't have to be fished out of the water by the Crash Boat (our series' version of the Coast Guard) on account of low battery or, God forbid, some type of damage. Each time I finish a race, I wonder if I'll ever claim a win for coming in first, or at least, not last. Scout did notch a first-place win once but, alas, I was not at the helm. Due to an embarrassing low-blood-sugar moment, I felt faint and relinquished my controller to friend Doug, a more capable RC sailor who showed me how to tune and sail Scout. Doug ensured the win, gallantly proving it's me ... not the vessel.

Woman standing next to a radio-controlled sailboat on a blue cinder block in the snow

Despite being out of her depth in the world of RC sail racing, the author came away a convert who embraced the camaraderie among competitors.

Nonetheless, for whatever reasons, I have been accepted into this group. It's occurred to me more than once this might be because 1. I am no threat to their quest for a trophy, 2. for political reasons, they hoped a woman would compete, or 3. every sport needs a mascot. Whichever it is, I'm here. Every Sunday. Coming in last. And today, after our boats are stored back in our vehicles, after we make our way to the RYC Burgee Bar to regale the tales of the day's shenanigans, and I take my first sip of Mount Gay and Coke, it hits me. It's the camaraderie that exists with all of us — winners, runners-up, and losers alike. I am included in the bantering and feel a kinship that comes with sharing a common love of a sport that requires thumb reflexes, patience and, at times, considerable layers of warm clothing. We meet, we race, we celebrate. This is why we come. Now I know why I am here.

THE SOLING ONE METER CLASS & CLASS RULES

The soling one meter class.

radio controlled soling sailboat

The Soling One Meter is a kit-based one-design class scale-model boat based on the former Olympic-class keelboat of the same name. All hulls, decks, keels, and rudders are produced by a single manufacturer. This uniformity makes the Soling One Meter a one design class. One of the major goals of a one design class is to make all boats as equal as possible so who wins the race is based more on the ability of the skipper rather than on the boat itself.

Soling One Meter Class Rules

The Soling One Meter class is managed by the AMYA Soling One Meter Class Secretary and an appointed Class Advisory Committee.

Soling 50 (RC Model)

Soling 50 (RC Model) is a 4 ′ 2 ″ / 1.3 m monohull sailboat designed by John & Laurie Converse/J. Lange and built by Vortex Model Engineering (USA) starting in 1970.

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

The SOLING 50 is sanctioned by the national American Model Yacht Association and has active fleets racing in California, Florida, Michigan and Texas.

Windjammin Sails Logo

Windjammin Sails are 100% legal racing sails for the Soling 1 Meter. They are made of a single-panel Dacron and cut to comply with the Soling One Meter Sail Control Drawing. However, WJ Sails has taken these plain white sails one step further by printing the illusion that these sails incorporate the hottest revolution in sailmaking - membrane technology just like the high tech America's Cup Yachts and Volvo Ocean Racers.

3DL WJ Sails

All Windjammin Soling 1M Sails include

  • Reinforced starburst corners which distribute the stretch and load better yielding a smoother longer lasting sail.
  • Battens which help hold the leech and keeps the sail area outside the pull line supported
  • Tell Tales in Florescent Green and Yellow, 2 pair on the jib, 1 pair on the main and 2 on main leech
  • Soling Symbol both sides of the sail
  • Luff wire installed in jib
  • Sail Numbers included on the main.... jib are extra.

Thank you for choosing Windjammin Sails for your sailing needs.Due to the high volume of orders and the careful craftsmanship involved in each sail, the current lead time for new sails is about 88 days . This means that your order is expected to arrive sometime just before 8/17/2024 . I understand that this is a long wait and I greatly apologize for this long lead time. I have a full time job at The Sailors' Tailor and a family to take care of, so I am limited to making sails in my spare time. Due to the high demand for my sails, I have a lot of orders to fulfill and a limited amount of time to do so. I hope you can appreciate the quality and craftsmanship of my work, and I assure you that I am doing my best to deliver your sail as soon as possible. If you are in a bind, and need your sails ASAP... then I do offer a RUSH Service to get your sails shipped in 10 days or less - fees applies Click here to add Rush Delivery to your order.

Soling 1M Daron White Sails

Membrane Technology is where sails are created over full-sized 3-dimensional molds by sandwiching a scrim cloth and a yarn layout between two thin Mylar films, then heat fusing everything to make a single cloth-like sail. The sails have fibers running up the leech, and tack fibers radiate out to the leech and many fibers from the clew radiate to points along the luff creating an interlocking structural grid that stretches less for its weight, holds its shape over a wider wind range, and retains its designed shape longer. This membrane technology has dominated sailboat racing worldwide. Membrane sails were used exclusively by the America's Cup and every team racing in both the 2002-2003 and 2005-2006 Volvo Ocean Race.

Over the past 14 years, WJ Sails has been looking for some way to print on Dacron. Because of the slippery coated finish Dacron has, nothing wanted to adhere to the surface. Graphic for the big cruising boats are currently printed and then cured under 800 degrees of heat. Problem with this process is the cloth shrinks around 8%, and not proportionately making it impossible to get a perfectly legal - lined up sail when done. Just recently WJ Sails found a process which does the job without heat and applies the ink just like a giant inkjet printer, but uses a special UV light to cure it.

So, WJ Sails took lots of pictures of different scrim mylars for the background, then drew to scale all the thread lines coming out of each corner of the sails, overlay some graphics, and after about 30 hours of design work, now have a very realistic 3DL America's Cup Volvo Ocean Racer looking Sail for the Soling 1M.
