Hatteras is known for their solid-fiberglass hull bottom with beefy support for key areas

such as the tunnels, shaft log and strut locations. Divinycell coring is infused in the hull

sides, decks and superstructure to add stiffness and reduce weight. The hull benefits

from an advanced variable-deadrise design that utilizes large propeller tunnels to

reduce draft and increase efficiency.

The 60 is powered by Caterpillar C-18's @ 1000 hp. The engines are installed in a V-drive

configuration with the gearbox forward. This positions the engine room as far aft

as possible and allows for more living space below. Combined with the boat's 18-foot

2-inch beam, this configuration allows more interior volume as many yachts in the mid-

60-foot range.

The 18'2" beam provides for an expansive salon/galley living area. Below decks, you'll

find a 130-square-foot full-beam master stateroom amidship, a VIP stateroom forward,

and guest bunks to port with two generous sized heads.

EXTERIOR FINISH and CONSTRUCTION

Each Hatteras provides for a solid glass hull bottom, with beefy support for key areas

like the tunnel, shaft log and strut locations.

This boat is a perfect blend of comfort and style with longevity in mind. It is one of the

surfaces found within other brands. It also is easier to repair and match than a gelcoat

most paints.

Boat Review: Hatteras 60 Convertible

  • By Dean Travis Clarke
  • Updated: October 12, 2001

In 1959, Hatteras Yachts debuted its first boat. Now called Knit Wits, it is still in remarkably Bristol condition. I fished it not long ago and found it to be an exquisite piece of work. Consider that Hatteras Yachts has had 38 years to perfect a product that was nearly perfect at the company’s founding, and you can well imagine that the newest member of the Hatteras family, a 60-foot convertible now in construction, will be an absolute treat for all your senses.

Construction No one has ever accused Hatteras of building lightweight boats – either in construction or reputation. A solid fiberglass bottom with vinylester resin assures the toughest, most durable barrier between your investment and the deep blue sea. Moving up the hull sides, weight is diminished through the use of Divinycell coring, fiberglass and polyester resins. However, though the structural bulkheads throughout the 60 also receive the Divinycell, cabin bulkheads remain solid, fine woods, and the joiner work has all the telltale signs of old-world craftsmanship.

Performance Every good naval architect will tell you that a well-rounded offshore vessel must achieve a delicate balance between light weight for speed and fuel economy and heavy weight for sea-kindliness. Certainly a 60-footer that weighs as little as most 35- to 40-footers can be extremely fast. But put that boat into a nasty head sea and it can damage both the boat and the crew. Hatteras combines weight, beam, length of running surface and bottom design to provide both exceptionally smooth head-sea ride with a respectable turn of speed.

The new 60 offers three different power packages: Detroit 12V-92TAs at 1,104 hp, Detroit 16V-92TAs at 1,472 hp and the CAT 3412C TAs at 1,649 hp. For the sake of argument, we’ll choose the performance specification of the midsize engine package. With these DDEC 16V92TAs, you could expect a top speed of 35 knots and a cruise of 32 knots.

Layout The first thing I’ve always noticed when boarding a Hatteras is the sophistication of the interior decor. Hatteras decorators are unsurpassed. You never see the garish, bordello-type designs, but rather rich, high-class fabrics, furniture and appointments. Whether you are entertaining guests for a dress-up party or napping on the sofa on the way out to the canyons, you’re sure to appreciate the comfort and space the salon offers. Wide and wide open, the well-designed area assures that guests and galley-slaves are never separated. And if you happen to be the slave making lunch while trolling, you can always see the trolling spread and be in the cockpit in seconds when a line leaves a rigger clip.

Like all Hatteras boats, the 60 boasts a galley that will be far better equipped than many homes, including specially designed glass and bottle storage, combination convection/microwave oven and loads of refrigerator and freezer space.

Belowdecks you’ll find three staterooms, two with queen-size berths and one with over/under bunks. However, all have private heads with separate shower stalls. As to the heart and nerve centers of any sport-fishing boat – the flybridge, engine room and cockpit – any competitive fishing team would be honored to work such a boat. The cockpit’s huge bait freezer assures that you’ll have plenty of bait, no matter how remote the fishing spot. Optional fish-box freezers can keep fish on ice or iced-brine for optimum freshness. And of course, a complete bait-prep center and loads of storage mean you can always have the right tackle and equipment near at hand.

The flybridge provides refrigeration for drinks, abundant guest seating forward of the helm, and a broad expanse of flush-mounted and overhead electronic instrument space. Another great feature – the flybridge overhang – discards the need for a fold-up sunshade over the forward end of the cockpit, shelters the anglers sitting on the cockpit boxes and provides the ideal spot for semi-hidden cockpit lighting fixtures.

Perhaps the best thing about buying a Hatteras is security. You know what you’re buying, you know that it’s a good, solid investment, and you know that you have a world-class fishing machine under you. Such knowledge is very comforting when you’re 100 miles out to sea.

Everything Hatteras from Sportfish to Motor Yacht

Designed to be the ultimate escape from the drudgery of life on land, Hatteras yachts pile on amenities such as generous windows and skylights, sweeping staircases, expansive decks with swim platforms. Whether you are looking for a Hatteras Sportfish or Motor Yacht we have the yacht for you. Take this moment to find your next yacht.

The Hatteras Yachts story began in 1959 in New Bern, North Carolina, when founder and marlin fisherman Willis Slane envisioned a fishing vessel that could withstand the unforgiving waters off Cape Hatteras. Just one year later, during an era when the wooden boat was still king, the company introduced the Hatteras 41 Convertible, the first all-fiberglass sportfishing boat available in the 40-foot range. What followed was innovation upon innovation and a remarkable legacy of superior craftsmanship, engineering, and attention to detail that remain the brand’s hallmarks 60 years later. Even the smallest of Hatteras Yachts’ sportfishing boats offer amenities often reserved for luxury yachts. From their helms outfitted with state-of-the-art electronics to their deceptively spacious, bright interiors, the GT, convertible, yacht fisherman, and flybridge models serve up plenty of room to wage war on your choice of catch while entertaining friends and fellow anglers. Outriggers, rod holders, outdoor grills, plenty of storage, and spacious lounge areas are available up top, while well-equipped galleys and comfortable accommodations populate below-deck areas.

  • Year Established 1960
  • Shipyard Location New Bern, North Carolina
  • Boat Construction Fiberglass
  • Boat Category Motor yachts, Sportfish , Convertibles
  • Worthy Notations The Hatteras 41 Convertible was the first all-fiberglass sportfishing boat of her size in the industry (1960).

60 ft hatteras motor yacht

anyone out there with feed back on the pros & cons of the Hatteras 60 ft motor yacht

Quality build as is typical of Hatteras. Good ride and performance with 1135's. Better economy with 1000's/1015's but loss of performance and I'd want the larger option. With 1135's, WOT of 32 and cruise in the 26-28 knot range. Comfortable ride and living. Many positives. Handles conditions well, although a bit stern heavy, especially with full fuel and water and not the best at handling waves on stern. Negatives in my opinion. First, no lower helm. Means you either have to enclose upper or operate from a flybridge regardless of weather and conditions. That was the deal stopper for us. Now I know Hatteras lovers have no issue with this. Poor arrangements for carrying tender. Many sold without stabilizers and I feel they are a must for the boat. CAT engines and very noisy. 83 decibels at WOT and 78 decibels at cruise. By comparison the 65' Sunseeker we purchased instead was 76 at WOT and 72 at cruise. Excellent boat, but for the reasons I cited, wasn't the boat for us.

They have a great range and hold a lot of fuel for their size. 1200 gallons I believe, The 1150HP C18's burn 85 GPH at 80%, older 1000 HP 76 GPH (both) at cruise. With the 1150 HP cruise is more like 23 knots with tender and 2 seakeepers and full fuel. They handle very well with the seakeepers. I haven't found them to be too tippy without them, but they definitely help. Half fuel with same equipment 24.5 knots. They have a terrific salon/galley layout with plenty of room for their size. I don't remember them being noisy at cruise, but it's been a while since I've run one at cruise. Teak is very thick, unlike the Euro boats. The highest quality motoryacht in the 60' range. The hydraulic swim platform is perfectly fine for carrying a tender. The third stateroom is a bit cramped.

There is a thread on them here on forum. In short nowhere near the quality of a Hatteras.

I am considering a new boat and we looked at the HATTERAS 64 motoryacht but truthfully we like the layout of the salon much better on the HATTERAS 60 motoryacht I think Capt. J said he had experience with the 60 ,, SO I am anxious to learn if there are recommendations I see they built the 60 for several years .. so are there any concerns with an early boat vs a late boat ..> Are there any weak points to look hard at . I would be using the boat all around the Chesapeake bay although a trip to Florida or Nantucket would probably happen with this boat. . I would appreciate any information I am an owner operator... the other thought would be a 64?

I have not been on one but was looking at them for my next boat. I have ruled them out (kind of) for the following reasons: can’t carry a largeish tender on the aft bridge deck, do not like that your only engine access when underway is by raising the hatch on the aft deck (I could get over this but it does bother me), early ones were V drives with stuffing box access under the engine. Most seem to have an air conditioned flybridge which would be mandatory for me on the next boat. Remember to search on boattrader as they have boats for sale by owner. There is one in Montauk that I have casually been watching.
Where else would you have engine access on a 60' MY than the aft deck? It's on the aft deck as are every other 60' MY's engine room access to keep noise and fumes out of the salon. The engine room is accessable in virtually any sea state on the aft deck. As for years. I prefer the salon layout of 2012 instead of earlier models due to the lack of interior staircase which gives a nicer salon. Hull was slightly redesigned as well in 2012. They're good running yachts with a ton of range considering they hold 1200 gallons of fuel. The third stateroom is nicer on the 64' but still usable/comfortable on the 60'. It's a great day boat for entertaining a dozen or so people, and very capable on a trip due to plenty of refrigeration, fuel, etc. Everything is pretty easily accessable too.
On the 54 & 60 Viking MY you enter the engine room through a full height door near the entrance to the aft stateroom. Same as on the Grand Banks 54 Europa and others. So other designers have found a way to incorporate an engine room accessible from the inside. As I said it is something I can get over but I don’t want to have to move aft deck furniture, rely on a electric over hydraulic actuator to access my engine room when something is wrong. Nor do I want to climb down a ladder when if I have lost power the boat turns beam to the wind and the rolling starts. Once again it may be only me that feels this way and I could get over it is not optimum in my opinion.
There are pros and cons thru every configuration I m not a big fan of ER access from inside the boat as you have to drag parts and stuff thru the boat. Also when working in there, with the door open you re blowing hot air inside the boat. correct me if I m wrong but the Vikings you mentioned are older designs with the ER forward of the master which is an aft cabin. More heat and noise too than With the ER aft. Also with an aft cabin, one small wake slamming the swimplatform is guaranteed to wake you up… also whenever you have people working on the boat, they can get in and out without getting inside. Nice for repairs when you and your family are on board having owned or captained boats with both configurations, I prefer having the ER aft and access on the aft deck. boats are all about compromises… No perfect set up.

Mapis selling a VZ to the states is like asking for an Espresso and Cannollo in New York as breakfast
LOL, yeah, I know. But that's one of quite a few IT builders (together with DP, for instance) whose boats IMHO had the potential to be successful in the US at least as much as Ferretti, if not more. OTOH, with their small capacity, they always struggled to keep up with the domestic demand, so they never even bothered trying to export. Which is also the main reason why they went belly up right after the financial crisis, when the internal demand dropped like a lead baloon overnight... All that said, I did get a pretty good espresso at Dante's in NYC, for instance. And while I didn't try the pastry, their selection looked impressive and rather inspiring! BTW, cannolo is with just one "L"!
Thanks for the Info I plan to look one more time a a particular 64 then once again at the 60 .. but I am strongly leaning toward a late model 60 .. Now all I have to do is sell my current L650 sea ray which really has been a decent boat for our use ....

Hatteras Yachts for Sale

Based in North Carolina for over 60 years, this brand like the area that lends them its name is known for pushing boundaries and creating yachts that are tough and adventurous. Their roots are in fiberglass as they were the first to introduce a 40ft fiberglass yacht and have continued to be innovative in their yacht designs. Although they began as a fishing boat company, their offerings include motor yachts and they deliver on the promise of inspired beauty.

As is evidenced by this quote from the founder, strength and performance lead the way through their history of innovation, “Willis Slane envisioned a fishing boat strong enough to withstand the waves off Cape Hatteras, where his prey of choice the Marlin, grow as big as the swells.”

Brunswick Corporation the parent company to Hatteras acquired Cabo Yachts  in 2006 to have a more complete range of offshore sportfishing boats within the Hatteras Collection. The Hatteras collection was sold by Brunswick in 2013 to a private equity firm after the long downturn in new Motor Yacht and Sportfish had stifled sales. Hatteras has found a new lease on life with its product innovation and new models hitting the market since 2013.

Hatteras recently debuted a M90 Panacera for model year 2018 at the Ft Lauderdale International Boat Show in 2017. The vessel boasts a 22’6” beam and will cruise at 22 knots with the Caterpillar C-32A with 1600hp each.
