Cheoy Lee’s origins began in a Shanghai shipyard that opened in 1870 to build and repair steam-powered vessels. In 1936, the founding family (which still operates Cheoy Lee today) moved the shipyard to Hong Kong, then a British colony, building power cargo vessels designed to outrun the Japanese blockade. By the mid-1950s, the shipyard branched out into the construction of teak sailing and motor yachts, designed by notable naval architects. Ultimately, luxury yachts became about 90 percent of its output, although the shipyard has continued to build large commercial vessels to the present day.

Throughout the 1960s and ’70s Cheoy Lee pioneered the use of GRP construction technology, launching the 39.62-metre motorsailer Shango II – the largest composite yacht of its time – in 1977. Two years later came the introduction of the Cheoy Lee 48’ Sport Yacht, the first all-foam-cored production yacht.

In 1999, Cheoy Lee opened its main shipyard on the Pearl River in Doumen. This facility gives the company the capability to produce luxury yachts and ships up to 60 meters in length.

A versatile builder, Cheoy Lee offers several semi-custom luxury yacht series, including its Alpha performance yacht range, Bravo raised pilothouse motor yacht range, Serenity luxury cruising yacht range and the Explorer superayacht series. The shipyard is unusual in that it specialises in steel, aluminium and composite construction, as wells as utilizing combinations of these materials.

Established in 2015, Bermuda Yachts is a Bermudian owned and operated company by brothers Justin and Jonathan Kempe. After designing a uniquely custom yacht, the Kempe brothers moved to South Africa in 2009, setup their own build operation, and returned 5 years later with ZARA, sailing 6,000 miles across vast oceans. As third generation charter captains, our passion and experience translate into a smooth charter experience, from start to finish. We  offer a total of four yachts for charter with captain/ crew. A 77 ft sailing catamaran, a 34 ft sailing catamaran, a 32ft powerboat and a 42 ft RIB powerboat. Find out more about each boat below.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Which boat is right for me.

Zara is perfect for larger groups or simply for those looking for plenty of space and comfort. Zola is for smaller groups looking for the same comforts as Zara but on a smaller scale. Zena is good for smaller groups looking for comfort and to go faster / snorkel the outer reef. Zeus is ideal for larger groups looking to do offshore snorkel adventures on the outer reef / those looking to go fast. Or feel free to combine the boats and they can all tie alongside each other at anchor.

WHAT IS INCLUDED?

All of our boats come with a professional captain/crew included in the cost of hiring the boat. We also provide swim noodles, snorkeling gear and on Zara and Zola we also have paddleboards. For Zola, Zena and Zeus where you are allowed to bring your own drinks we provide coolers and ice for free. On Zola we also have drinks for pre-purchase at the time of booking. For Zara we have a full service bar which is charged on consumption. We do not provide towels so please remember to bring towels & sunscreen (non spray on type). 

DO YOU OFFER PER HEAD TOURS?

Yes, for Zara you can book a ticket to jump on a tour which departs from Royal Naval Dockyard. You can book tickets here .

DO YOU PROVIDE CATERING?

Yes, we can put you in touch with one of our catering partners. Feel free to bring your own food/snacks on either boat. Or we can put you in touch with a catering provider to provide food for your cruise. For Zara this can be a more extensive catering offering with hand passed canapes, full buffet etc. For Zola, Zena and Zeus we recommend a simpler catering option.
