The Renkin 18 is a 17.5ft fractional sloop designed by Brian Amato and built in fiberglass since 1977.

The Renkin 18 is a light sailboat which is a reasonably good performer. It is stable / stiff and has a low righting capability if capsized. It is best suited as a day-boat.

Newport 16 or Renken 18

I'm looking for my first sailboat for my family and I. I have never sailed and have a family of four. I have these two boats that I have narrowed my selection to. I want a boat that is roomy enough for my family, easy to trailer, and yet still have fun on. Anyone have any suggestions or information on either one of these boats?

neptune 16 I had a Neptune 16 for my first sailboat(neptune 16 and newport 16 same boat I believe), Luved the boat, sailed well, and was forgiving of my mistakes for a small sailboat. Not a lot of cabin room but overnited in it a couple of times with wife and kids (wife wasn't happy but kids luved it) Have no knowledge of your other choice. But I know the neptune was very well built...best of luck and happy sails

Renken I was looking for an open 16 footer to introduce my daughters to sailing when I ran across a Renken 18 for sale - it had been donated to a church. It taught me a lot in the 6 years I owned it, and though it was a long way from a state-of-the-art design, it suited my needs at the time. A very safe and stable sailer, its rig is simple and easy to set up - which also means that it doesn't have the tweaks that a more performance oriented boat would have. It was originally built as a "Tangerine 18" in the late 70s, then Renken bought the mold(s) and made them in '83, only to stop production because they cost too much to build. I did about 400 sails on mine and sold it for almost what I had in it, after pushing it as far as I could (rigged it for spinnaker, etc.) Because it has a stub keel it will make a goodly amount of leeway upwind, and thus is not much good for racing, but if you don't mind that drawback it is a fine boat, well built and simple. I would be happy to comment further backchannel. Check out geocities.com/renkensailboats/ for more info.

watercolors

Newport 16 The Newport has a very large cockpit, easy and fast to rig, very easy and stable to sail. Cabin is too small for family overnight, but great boat for daysailing with lots of storage room in the cabin.

1984 Renken 18, anyone ever messed with one?

  • Add to quote

I might be able to get a 1984 Renken 18 soon. It seems to be in good shape from what ive seen. Theres no bottom paint on it so i can see the gelcoat and don't see any blisters. Its on a trailer, but its not the right type of trailer. Im thinking of buying this and having my sisters kids help me fix it up, then in a few years give it to them. I like that its not a centreboard boat, but a fixed keel.

Hey, I dont know if you'll ever see this or not but yeah, actually i own a renken 18. It is my first boat and i have really enjoyed it. i have had it since summer 2005. it was almost too much for me to handle by just reading a "how to sail" book and putting in it the water but i haven't gotten into any serious trouble or damage. its like one of the guys in my sailing club says, "sailing is the only sport where you can scare the s**t out of yourself doing 8 miles an hour." Anyway, i hope you bought the boat and are enjoying it as much as i have been. DAK1

Make Custom Flex

Model Interlake

This boat is a 1975 Custom Flex Interlake sailboat. The boat is complete as far as I can tell and includes the mast, boom, rudder, tiller, main and foresail and a Pamco trailer. I am the third owner of this boat, I have not sailed it but the previous owner was sailing the boat in 2013. The hull needs some fiberglass work done where the centerboard pocket is on the hull, and the floor has delaminated. The sails, rudder, mast and boom are in good condition. The tiller is in working condition but should be replaced. The Pamco trailer is in excellent condition and only needs tires and paint. I would probably replace the wooden guides also. The boat has a title, the trailer is registered. Local pickup only. Delivery might be arranged depending upon distance. No returns unless item not as described.

This is Hull #1, 1961, Windjammer 21's from California, designed by Morgan Embrogan and built in Southern California back in the 60's and early 70's by various commercial builders. There were at least 15 built and I have a gaff-rigged, topsail cutter. This Windjammer sailed to Hawaii and back from California twice and to Alaska and back to CA. boats have very easily folded masts, even under sail, fit into US containers (24). The Windjammer 21 will sleep 4 in separate bunks and is very comfortable under way and in the slip. With quadrant centerboard up it draw 18 inches and weight empty is 2500#. It has always been great in the Channel Islands because it cuts over the kelp and because it is so light we used to tie off to the kelp (don't shoot me) to keep from carrying 600' feet of line and extra chain necessary to normal anchor around the islands. Boat is in Charleston, SC now on a trailer. Steel trailer has 4 new tires, wheels, bearings, recently pulled from Florida. 6 bags of sails, all rigging, outboard in a well, boat is ready to sail but could use some TLC, paint, varnish, etc. Photo of Black hull boat is a sistership. Could deliver for a fee if needed after purchase.

  • Description

Seller's Description

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

First built by Salt Marine of Ft Lauderdale FL (USA). Later offered as the SIGMA 18, before the molds were purchased by Renkin, better known as a builder of powerboats. It then became the RENKIN 18.

Opinions/history on Renken boats?

  • Thread starter rzawora
  • Start date Nov 1, 2008
  • Nov 1, 2008

Hey everyone. I'm a new boat owner...bought my first bought earlier this season from a 78 year old neighbor down the road who was original owner and meticulously took care of it. It's a 1998 Renken 210CC, 21' cuddy cabin with 4.3L I/O. Since then I have found out that Renken is out of business and this was the last year any vessels had their name. It's my understanding that United Marine took-over Renken around 1995 due to bankruptcy. I guess really what I'm trying to figure out is the overall quality of the boat? Reputation of the company/manufacturer, etc.? Anyone have any experience with these things? Any insight someone can give will be greatly appreciated...and hey, I won't kill the messenger! This boat may be 10 years old, but you can hardly tell...he was retired Navy (heck the boat's name is Sea Bee), he was 68 when he bought it brand new, and was always kept on a lift at his house and maintained by a very reputable (and very pricey) marine shop around here. Let me know what you got for me...thanks in advance...

Re: Opinions/history on Renken boats? I used to have a 1983 Renken 18 footer. It had a Mercury outboard on it. I owned it for several years and sold it for more than i bought it for. It was a well built boat.I would buy another one if i found a good deal on one. I never had one problem with it.

Re: Opinions/history on Renken boats? I've owned three older Renken boats, I've had '82 and '83 Renken 900 Fisherman models and an older 1978 Cuddy cabin with an I/O drive and 302 Ford engine. All three were great boats, none had any issues what so ever. Excellent hull design, dry ride and lots of room. Renken went through a number of ownership changes in the later years, its always been my understanding that the original Renken boats were all prior to 1985, then after that the company was run by the original owners sons or something who then ran it till 1995. They eventually came back as Sea Fox boats, same owners, same factory location. You can find more info at fiberglassics.com.

Re: Opinions/history on Renken boats? Thanks for all the info guys. I've been extremely happy with this boat so far. Not a single problem. This is my first boat, but my father and other family members have always had boats that I helped use, abuse, and take care of. Unfortunately for me, they all had outboards, so a lot of this mechanical stuff is new to me. Most things don't seem that difficult though. As for the boat, I would agree with what you guys said so far. I'm happy that the couple comments are positive, I was starting to wonder if the one I had just didn't have problems yet . I guess I say that because I don't see many of them around for sale, and prior to me purchasing this one, I had never heard of them. The hull is in great shape and seems to be well built and strong. The boat shows no sign of damage or rot. The original owner had problems with the original gas tank and had it professionally replaced and the floor professionally refinished to the tune of $2k several years ago. The owner told me that he could count on his one hand how many times he's had it over 4000 rpm's. Even when I test drove it, he was asking me to take it easy...all I did was go over 4000 r's. lol. I even talked to the shop that did all the work on this boat for 10 years, and their exact words were, "...that's all you paid? Damn what a deal, run the hell out of it cause he never did." They told me he would call them over the littlest noise or vibration, and never spared a dime. The only thing the mechanic did tell me to watch for was if it ever started mis-firing to look to the manifolds for the problem...something about they were one piece then, I'm assuming he means risers and mani's...not sure though. Maybe I can get more info on that in the other section. Thanks again for your input...I just hope I can take care of it as well as the original owner and his mechanics did...if so, it should have many many more years on it. I'll look forward to sharing the time with all you mates

Re: Opinions/history on Renken boats? i have just bought a 1990 renken spitfire, 20ft with 5.7l Cobra V8 with King Cobra drive with twin thru hull exhausts, sounds nice

Re: Opinions/history on Renken boats? Our 1983 Renken was junk from day one. The hull almost cracked it two when the boat was 4 years old. It got a brand new 1988 hull put under it at the factory in Charleston SC, where they completely reconned the top deck, and it was a good solid boat after that.

Re: Opinions/history on Renken boats? I had an 81 Renken 18 foot, closed bow outboard. It was an entry level boat and the previous owner used it on the Delaware Bay in rough--really rough--water. When I got it I quickly found that the deck had separated from the hull from the bow halfway back to the stern. The "pop" rivets holding it together were not backed by washers and in the pounding of the rough water. they pulled right through the fiberglass. There was no scuffing of the hull or other damage so it had to be wave pounding related. I replaced all the rivets with 1/4 inch truss head bolts. That was the only problem I ever had with the boat. The boat was a great riding, excellent rough water boat. It would handle almost anything you could expect from a boat that size with no fuss. The only reason I sold it was because I wanted a larger cuddy cabin boat.

I’m looking at a 1988 Renken Classic Cuddy cabin but I can’t find the HIN on the rear where they usually are. Is there some other place that I can look to get this information (HIN#)? Thanks
