Atlante foredeck dining

Atlante: On board CRN's remarkable 54.8m superyacht

To win the contract for 54.8 metre Atlante , designers and yard were given an uncompromising brief: very square, very military, very camouflage. The result is remarkable.

There are no new ideas. “We simply take a lot of old ideas and put them into a sort of mental kaleidoscope…we keep on turning and making new combinations indefinitely; but they are the same old pieces of coloured glass that have been in use through all the ages.” That’s Samuel Clemens, aka author Mark Twain, in his autobiography, reflecting on the genesis of ideas.

The innovative minds involved in the creation of Atlante , a 54.8 metre custom yacht built by Italian shipyard CRN , must have really given their kaleidoscope a good twist. With her metallic grey hull, superstructure painted a matt jet black, 200 square metres of glass windows and a lack of curves at odds with her nautical nature, she truly stands out.

Step aboard, and this new yacht takes on an ever more intriguing dimension. From a relaxing beach club finished in attractive spruce, forward of twin spaces used as a gym and massage room, central stairs lead to the main deck. At the top of the stairs is a vast area finished with wide teak boards and enclosed on all sides. It takes a few seconds to adjust to the light seeping through big louvres before details become visible.

Eventually, out of the shadows emerge a large movie screen and a couple of chairs, but also hinges on the large louvred shell doors on port and starboard, a black crane integrated into the ceiling and attachments on the floor. This is an exceptionally elegant tender garage that transforms into a vast panoramic beach area at main deck level. The large side doors slide outward before lifting up. When evening comes, if the mood strikes, this aft deck/upper beach becomes the ultimate outdoor theatre, open to the breeze, yet private. It is the first of many familiar areas on board that have been given the kaleidoscope treatment. It was the yacht’s owner who inspired this innovative space: “I told the designers I did not want to see the tenders.”

After spending 15 years cruising the Med on two motor sailers, he spent nearly four years imagining, conceiving, building and finishing his first motor yacht. He’d looked around marinas and through the pages of magazines but never found a vessel that truly inspired him. “I don’t like round windows or round shapes,” he says. “I wanted to build something very square, very military, very camouflage, [a boat] that does not move much when it’s anchored offshore, but most importantly one with very clean, very simple lines, for sure incorporating great details, but not over-designed.”

An entrepreneur and a creator known for having a fierce eye for detail, he has no fear of disrupting the credos of the yachting world. Aside from his vision for the look of his yacht, he had a few principles: one, he wanted to build in Italy; two, he wanted a vessel that could navigate beyond the confines of traditional Mediterranean cruising grounds; three, he wanted to find partners who would understand, respect and translate his vision accurately. He found them in Carlo Nuvolari and Dan Lenard, of design studio Nuvolari Lenard .

Trying to assess his vision, Lenard prompted the owner for his taste in cars. “He asked, ‘Do you like Porsches, the Panamera perhaps?’ I said, ‘No, just the opposite, I don’t like anything very sporty.’ And then I said, ‘I think my point of reference is the Range Rover.’”

After he had listened to his likes and dislikes, Lenard told the owner, “Well, what you describe is not very nautical,” but soon Nuvolari Lenard had a project that matched his vision closely. Lenard resolved the tender conundrum with the elegant main deck garage that houses two nine-metre tenders designed by Nuvolari Lenard to match the feel of the mothership.

It all seems so new, so fresh. Except, “It is an old idea,” says Carlo Nuvolari. “It was common 10 years ago, in America especially, for yachts to stow the tenders [on the main deck aft]. But the tenders were stealing a lot of space and there was no alternate use for that space. The interior of this garage is finished like a yacht garage should be. Normally the first thing you do when you reach your destination is to splash the tenders, so then you have this big open area and those doors are usually up, creating shade. It’s a great space to entertain."

“Another consideration was to raise the yacht,” Nuvolari adds. “Many times, when you dock in a marina you are between two boats and often they are bigger boats – think Monaco – so the lower deck feels very low.” With obstructed views “those main decks are not going to be used. So we transferred all these spaces to the upper decks”.

Atlante ’s bridge deck is divided into two areas aft and forward of the mostly angular deckhouse (Nuvolari points out that they actually have a subtle curvature). Forward is a large up/down teak table set into a recess in the deck. The table, which matches the decking, can recede completely allowing the deck to serve as a helipad that sits atop a toy garage and mooring room.

Exceptionally wide walkaround decks, perfectly protected by windows and a wide overhang, lead to the aft section of the bridge deck, set as a comfortable exterior saloon with flexible table arrangements. Above still is a sundeck with a superb 6,000-litre spa pool whose soothing waterfall and gurgling sounds are best enjoyed from the large sunpad facing toward the bow. Further aft are a dining area and more flexible lounging space.

Despite his enthusiasm for what Nuvolari Lenard did with Atlante , the owner did not choose CRN because of its referral. Unlike other yards he consulted, he says, CRN did not ask him to compromise on his ideas. “It was the only company that really guaranteed me a custom boat,” he says.

The yard started with a CRN naval platform of 55 metres with a moulded beam just a hair shy of 10.2 metres. The bow was custom designed with a countersink typical of an explorer. But the designers stopped short of giving her a vertical bow. “We disagree that a straight bow should be vertical; the boat should have a grade of flare to deflect the sprays and be more gentle at sea,” Nuvolari says.

Indeed, from the mid-hull up, the yacht is a pure custom creation. CRN’s project team had to find novel solutions and subcontractors able to deliver products suited to the particular demands of a design driven by aesthetic.

There is an abundant use of stainless steel inside and out, and removable stanchions, custom made of steel with a painted fibreglass finish. Aligning the polished stainless steel plates on the bow and these hull railings around the helipad, and joining the stainless steel details to materials on the inside were some of the CRN craftsmen’s biggest challenges.

As important as the details you can see are those you cannot. Mooring equipment and anchor chains and winches, for instance, are all invisible. Visible is the radar arch with its dark paint, a design element in itself, along with the Nuvolari Lenard-designed stainless steel sculptural “mast pole”. But you have to talk to the CRN project manager to discover what you can’t see. For instance, “The air-conditioning units are in the mast and in the technical space of the sundeck coachroof; a ventilation trunk brings fresh air down to the saloon. It was the only way to leave the saloon free from fan coils and technical spaces. We had to pay attention to potential noise, so we used a thick material inside the plenum to dampen the sound,” explains Giorgia Martinelli, project manager for CRN at the time of Atlante 's build.

The saloon may feel nicely chilled but it has a warm décor, which was realised by a happening interior-design powerhouse from Paris: Gilles & Boissier. The owner had a well-established relationship with Patrick Gilles and Dorothée Boissier, and the firm has a growing portfolio of private homes, boutiques, restaurants and hotels, which includes the first Baccarat signature hotel recently inaugurated in New York. Atlante 's is their first motor yacht interior, which Boissier describes as masculine and intimate. “It is a very instinctive project, very personal and devoid of references to the world of yachting,” says Boissier. “We have developed it in a very introspective manner, independently of the exterior.”

Despite this approach, no disconnect is discernible between interior and exterior design. The dark ambience inside and stainless steel details, as well as furniture, all of it custom designed by Gilles & Boissier, echo the exterior features.

The common thread is the owner, who stirred the direction of this elegant interior that blends woods such as smoked oak, spruce or gum tree with exceptional marbles used liberally and somewhat unusually on many interior walls. There is no questioning the luxury of the materials used, but perhaps the most luxurious aspect of this interior is open space. High ceilings, especially in the master suite, where height exceeds 2.22 metres, and wide corridors contribute to a sense of wellness and ease in spite of darker colours.

“The boat is very personal,” says the owner. “The layout is quite classic, because I feel the classic layout was good for my use, but I did not want any compromise of space. I don’t have a huge dining room because I don’t want a huge table with 20 chairs you never use. I don’t have a real dining room inside; instead it’s a sliding table that can go up and down and we can still have 20 people eat inside.”

This different approach to space implied throwing out a few staples of more conventional layouts. For instance, there is no captain’s cabin on the bridge deck; the captain enjoys a large cabin on the lower deck instead.

And because the stylish pilothouse with its spectacular glass bridge as centrepiece is also a space for guests to enjoy from a comfortable panoramic banquette, the captain’s office had to be very space efficient.

“I really did what I like. I did something very open, very my style, very no-compromise,” says the owner, who enjoyed the process of creation immensely, taking those pieces of coloured glass and rearranging them in a beautiful, non-traditional package.

Motor Yacht

This yacht is the outcome of the outstanding job performed by design firm Nuvolari Lenard, that pencilled her outer lines, and CRN’s Engineering Department, which was in charge of naval engineering.

Nuvolari Lenardi had already successfully cooperated with the Shipyard on several megayachts, including 43-metre 'Magnifica’, 46-metre ‘Clarena' and 'Saramour', and 72-metre 'Azteca'.

“Launching a new yacht is always a moment of great pride for the entire Shipyard” – says CRN’s Chairman and CEO Lamberto Tacoli - “as emotions go hand in hand with the satisfaction of knowing that each and every one of our products is going to represent our brand and Made-in-Italy yachting across the world’s seas. The ‘ATLANTE’ is an extraordinary jewel – a very innovative one – we can truly be proud of. We are deeply grateful to the Owner Company for choosing us to build such an extraordinary yacht; to the design firm Nuvolari Lenard, that through the 'ATLANTE' have once more confirmed their incredible creativity; and to all CRN’s workers and subcontractors who were involved in this project from its very beginning to its final completion".

Entirely built in Ancona, this yacht can boast a purposely strong stylistic identity, which draws inspiration from some elements typical of military crafts: square shapes, sharp lines, and innovative, sophisticated design solutions - these are the distinguishing features of the Ancona-based shipyard's brand-new yacht.

The ’ATLANTE’, 55 metres long and having a 10.20-metre beam, develops over 5 decks featuring strikingly original solutions.

Atlante’s strong and sharp exterior design was inspired by military vessels. She has 5 decks and a beam of 10.20m. She reaches a top speed of 15 knots and a cruising speed of 14 knots with her twin 1230 KW Caterpillar diesel engines.

CRN’s Chairman and CEO Lamberto Tacoli says:

Dan Lenard commented:

“We conceived and created this new yacht together with CRN following the requirements of the Owner Company. The outer lines have been developed having in mind a specific final look – aggressive, but at the same time very proportionate. Seen in her entirety, this is a high-impact yacht, whose determined military look becomes soft on the sea. This is why we found some original solutions, such as a non-traditional bow and areas entirely devoted to guests, like the side doors of the main deck that, once the tenders have been launched, can be exploited to the fullest”.

Does having original members matter for 1970s/’80s bands?

The Rolling Stones has three key members still touring with the band: Mick Jagger, Keith Richards and Ron Wood. Foreigner's touring band has no original members. Its lead singer Kelly Hansen joined in 2005, replacing Lou Gramm. AP

Baby Boomer-era bands have been around for at least 40 years, some 50 and 60 years, bringing joy to multiple generations.

A handful are still touring in sizable venues like Ameris Bank Amphitheatre (capacity: 17,000), Cadence Bank Amphitheatre at Chastain (6,900) and even Truist Park (41,000).

A band is different from a solo act. When Elton John, Kenny Loggins or Paul Simon retire, they retire. There is no substitute beyond the myriad cover bands out there.

With bands, the lineups can morph, but the classic songs endure. As the cruel sands of time pass, many key members leave, die or retire. Yet many bands keep on touring. Some try combos to fill bigger venues. There’s Foreigner and Styx at Ameris; Earth, Wind & Fire and Chicago, both at Ameris; and Def Leppard and Journey at Truist with Steve Miller. Two acts (Santana, REO Speedwagon) are pairing up with more recent bands (Counting Crows and Train, respectively).

“At the end of the day, most concertgoers go for the songs,” said Greg Lee, bassist for Atlanta-based Yacht Rock Revue, which has thrived in recent years playing spot-on covers of songs by the likes of Toto, the Doobie Brothers and Hall & Oates. “If they play the songs well and have a reputation of being good, it’s not necessarily a deal breaker.”

Here’s a look at 11 of those bands, which formed between 1966 and 1979, who have hit the road this summer. This is ranked partly subjectively on how intact the current touring group is compared to the band during its peak hit-making times. Lead singers, in general, are given more weight than drummers or bassists. Tickets for most shows are available via ticketmaster.com .

Core period when band was generating hits: 1983-1999 (e.g. “Photograph,” “Pour Some Sugar On Me,” “Love Bites”)

Key members from that period still touring: Lead vocalist Joe Elliott, guitarist Phil Collen, drummer Rick Allen and bassist keyboardist Rick Savage

Why they can still sell tickets: The band lost guitarist Steve Clark in 1991 to drugs and alcohol but the four other core members from the band’s 1980s hit-making years remain intact. With help from a vocal coach, Elliott remains in top vocal form after losing his voice in 2015. Drummer Allen is a drumming miracle 40 years after losing his arm in a car accident. And their big, brawny songs have lost none of their headbanging, arena-filling appeal.

Core period when band was generating hits: 1972-1989 (e.g. “Listen to the Music,” “Black Water,” “What a Fool Believes”)

Key members from that period still touring: lead singer Michael McDonald, lead guitarist Tom Johnston, guitarist Patrick Simmons, guitarist John McFee

Why they can still sell tickets: The rise of yacht rock has given the band a second lease on life. And the return of lead singer Michael McDonald in 2019 after 23 years away from the group was a major boost. Dave Myer, a 64-year-old Roswell digital sales manager, has seen the band with and without McDonald and prefers McDonald’s presence. “He still busts it up,” he said. “The guy has the voice of an angel.”

The Rolling Stones

June 7, Mercedes-Benz Stadium

Core period when band was generating hits: 1964-1991 (e.g. “Satisfaction,” “Ruby Tuesday,” “Start Me Up”)

Key members from that period still touring: lead singer Mick Jagger, lead guitarist Keith Richards, guitarist Ron Wood

Why they still sell tickets: The Rolling Stones have been deeply defined by powerhouse lead singer Jagger and his partner in crime Richards, two larger-than-life characters who have graced tabloids and Hollywood parties for decades. The Stones are often considered one of the best rock bands in history. And despite their advanced ages, the core members are still capable of performing with panache and grit.

Aug. 10, Atlanta Symphony Hall

Core period when band was generating hits: 1972-1983 (e.g. “Tin Man,” “A Horse With No Name,” “Ventura Highway”)

Key members from that period still touring: Vocalists Gerry Beckley and Dewey Bunnell, two of the founding members

Why they can still sell tickets: Their folk-rock sound melded well with 1970s-era acts like Seals & Croft, Jim Croce and Gordon Lightfoot and provide old-time hippies a nostalgic kick. “They have that free and easy spirit,” said Myer, who has seen them five times over the decades including ASO in 2022. “And they still sound fantastic.”

REO Speedwagon

Aug. 17, Ameris (with Train)

Period when band was generating hits: 1978-1990 (e.g. ”Roll With the Changes,” “Take It on the Run,” “Can’t Fight This Feeling”)

Key members from that period still touring : lead singer Kevin Cronin, bassist Bruce Hall

Why the band can still sell tickets: Cronin is a delightfully punchy presence on stage and can still sing with crackle and pop. While the band lacks the critical weightiness to even get nominated to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, it has enough recognizable classic rock and pop songs to keep a crowd happy. “The times I have seen them live, they sound like their CDs, on point,” said “Southside” Steve Rickman, a morning host on My Fox-FM.

Members of the band Earth, Wind & Fire (left-right) Ralph Johnson, Philip Bailey and Verdine White performed at the Apollo Monday night.

Earth Wind & Fire

Aug. 9, Ameris

Period when band was generating hits: 1971-1993 (e.g. ”September,” “Boogie Wonderland,” “Shining Star”)

Key members from that period still touring: Lead vocalist Philip Bailey, bassist Verdine White and drummer Ralph Johnson

Why they still sell tickets : With three original members, including a key vocalist, the band can still jam like it’s 1978. And their unique mix of soul, disco, jazz and funk seems to have only grown more popular over time with “September” finding a new gear in recent years , becoming a staple at any old-school dance party or wedding.

June 18, Gas South Arena (with Counting Crows)

Period when band was generating hits: 1969-2003 (e.g. “Oye Como Va,” “Evil Ways,” “Smooth”)

Key member from that period still touring: Carlos Santana

Why the band can still sell tickets: Over five-plus decades, more than 70 different musicians have toured with Santana, but it’s the man whose last name gives the band its name who truly matters. Carlos Santana, the supremely skilled 76-year-old guitarist, has always been front and center, the recognizable star, more so than any vocalist in the band. As long as he can still mesmerize an audience with his guitar work, the band will fill seats.

Aug. 9, Ameris Bank Amphitheatre

Period when band was generating hits: 1970-1989 (”Colour My World,” “Saturday in the Park,” “Hard to Say I’m Sorry”)

Key members from that period still touring: Vocalist and keyboardist Robert Lamm, trumpeter Lee Loughnane, trombonist James Pankow

Why the band can still sell tickets: Chicago was one of the first successful acts to integrate rock and a brass section, which anchored many of its early 1970s classics, then transitioned to schmaltzier fare, including a raft of successful David Foster ballads during the 1980s MTV era. The band survived the departure of Peter Cetera in 1985 and today still has two key brass section natives as well as original lead vocalist Lamm. Set lists nowadays are packed with crowd pleasing big hits that will make even the most casual fans smile.

Styx still includes founding members Chuck Panozzo (third from left) and and James "JY" Young (center), along with longtime guitarist and vocalist Tommy Shaw (third from right), an Alabama native who joined in 1975. The other members are Todd Sucherman, Lawrence Gowan (from left, to the left of Panozzo) and Terry Gowan and Will Evankovich (from left, to the right of Shaw). Photo by Jason Powell

July 17, Ameris Bank Amphitheatre

Period when band was generating hits: 1973-1991 (e.g. “Come Sail Away,” “Renegade,” “Too Much Time on My Hands”)

Key members from that period still touring: Vocalist and guitarist Tommy Shaw, guitarist James “J.Y.” Young, bassist Chuck Panozzo (in a limited capacity)

Why the band can still sell tickets: Styx is another band that has not gotten close to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, a weird mix of hard rock and Broadway bombast that landed several songs in every classic rock playlist. Shaw and Young have kept the lights on decades after the theatrical Dennis DeYoung left the scene. It helps that Canadian Lawrence Gowan “kills the Dennis DeYoung stuff,” said Yacht Rock Revue’s Lee. “And the original members are still awesome.” Original bassist Panozzo, who has been living with HIV since 1991 and is a cancer survivor, is semi-retired but still plays with the band sometimes.

Singer Arnel Pineda (left) and guitarist Neal Schon of Journey perform during the first night of the band's second nine-show residency at The Joint inside the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino on May 3, 2017 in Las Vegas, Nevada. (Photo by Ethan Miller/Getty Images)

Credit: Ethan Miller

Period when band was generating hits; 1978-1996 (”Don’t Stop Believin’,” “Any Way You Want It,” “Separate Ways”)

Key members from that period still touring: lead guitarist Neal Schon, keyboardist and rhythm guitarist Jonathan Cain

Why the band can still sell tickets : Schon and Cain remain the heart and soul of the group and have toured aggressively for years. The canonization of “Don’t Stop Believin’” by “The Sopranos” season finale fueled the group’s induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2017. Their current lead singer, Arnel Pineda, found on YouTube in 2007 by the band, sounds so much like lead singer Steve Perry from its hit-making days that “you could close your eyes and not know the difference,” noted Steve Craig, former program director for classic rock station 97.1/The River who now runs alternative rock station 99X.

BASICALLY A COVER BAND

Kelly Hansen, left, and Mick Jones of Foreigner perform during the '40th Anniversary Tour' at Coral Sky Amphitheatre on Tuesday, August 1, 2017 in West Palm Beach, Fla. (Photo by Michele Eve Sandberg/Invision/AP)

Credit: Michele Eve Sandberg/Invision/AP

Period when band was generating hits: 1977-1988 (”Urgent,” “Juke Box Hero,” “I Want To Know What Love Is”)

Key members from that period still touring: none. The most senior of the touring band is Jeff Pilson, who joined in 2004. Founding member Mick Jones, who has Parkinson’s disease, is technically still part of the band but doesn’t tour with them anymore.

Why they can still sell tickets: They came to be during an era where their sound mattered more than their lead singer or any particular band member, none of whom had anything close to Jagger-like swagger. So songs like “Cold as Ice,” “Feels Like the First Time” and “Double Vision” have become iconic in the classic rock canon. “This is a tribute band but we just jammed along anyway,” said Myer, who attended last year’s concert at Ameris. “Is the joke on us or them?”
