Model repairs.
If you have a model boat that is in need of repair or a simple cleaning, we can help!
To give you the best possible attention for your repair, please begin with sending us as many detailed photographs of the damage via email and we can provide a ballpark estimate for the work. This will give you an idea of what would need to be spent on the work. The more photographs you send, the more accurate our repair estimate can be. We have seen all kinds of damage and we have several inquiries each week with regard to repairs.
Antique Clipper Ship Model Repair, Before
Antique Clipper Ship Model Repair, After
It's quite common for customers to think: "It'll be easier if I just come by and bring it in." Since we are a small staff and reserved appointments for estimates can get costly, we kindly ask that you start with a photograph. If you insist that bringing the model in for repair is the best way for you to move forward, then do so, and we will contact you within a few weeks once we are able to review the work involved. We cannot guarantee on the spot estimates.
If you would like to further protect your investment with a glass case, we can have one custom made for you. Visit our Custom Display Cases page for details.

JSB Model Restorations
Rolling back the playworn years.
This website has been produced to:-
Illustrate to those looking for a restorer of model ships, galleons, yachts, toy trains, steam plants et al a selection of the various projects I have undertaken.
Inform that commissions are undertaken to restore, repair, build specific kits, models or parts thereof.
Inspire others wanting to restore similar items themselves that they can do it too.
Advise how I have tackled the restoration or repair as so many items have their playworn ‘wounds’ needlessly exacerbated from attempts by people who don’t fully understand how to do it.
Advertise items for sale. If there is something which takes your fancy please contact me.
Ask that if you have old models to dispose of, or are looking to have a workshop cleared out then before putting them in the skip I would be interested to hear from you.
Finally if this site helps someone to successfully repair a much loved model then I am delighted. I am quite happy to offer what advice I can (which may be as simple as putting you in touch with another modeller or website) if you want to contact me. I don’t accept any liability if the advice doesn’t work!
So thank you for taking the trouble to read this website and happy modelling!

SHIP MODEL REPAIR
A trusting restorer must be a nautical historian who knows many ship types of different periods. This is important because old models might leave no traces of their missing parts. You can validate this knowledge requirement by viewing the accuracy of the models the restorer has been produced and the great variety of his repair jobs.
You want a gifted professional, not an wannabe, to take care of your ship. An amateur can tie knots and glue things but he cannot accurately duplicate the missing parts. He has to turn to a third party for premade parts, which usually are not exact shapes and sizes. He might destroy the antique look of your model. He will either give up or mess up a precious model when things turn out not like what he expects.
ModelShipMaster is the only one who can custom make parts. This can be attested by the tiny details in the ship models that we make. Incompetent repairers do not have good photos to back up their claims. To compensate, they write lengthy about how good they are, about childhood passion, and their intentions. Well, we have seen enough primitive models from passionate amateurs.
The professionals who restore antique furniture and decorative art are still amateurs in the ship model business. They mostly fill, sand and paint, not create. Their tools are very different and larger. We have witnessed a case in which an owner took back his ship immediately after seeing an antique repairer's tools.
ModelShipMaster repairs ship models of any type and any quality. We can travel to your place or you can send your models to our facility in California.
Below is our repair of the steamship SACO for Ayres Hotel in Newport Beach, California. The SACO's information was scant as it was built for World War I and we managed the restoration so successfully that only a couple of weeks later the hotel commissioned us another restoration--an extraordinary model of a Russian warship. Mr. Ayres is a nautical collector who owns more than 30 exceptional and rare models--many of them are displayed at his headquarters hotel which is only 15 miles from ModelShipMaster. If you have a very expensive model and you are looking for a trusting restorer, just contact the manager of the Ayres Hotel and ask about our technical expertise and professionalism.
Second time at Crystal Cruises , upgrading the model:
If driving is not practical for you, packing and sending a model to our location is fairly easy. Just place it inside a large carton box which is at least 20" longer, wider, and taller than the model then fill the box with packing peanuts. Then bring the box to a local FEDEX station. If the box is too big for your vehicle, we can schedule a FEDEX pickup for you. Note that after the repair we will have to build a crate for your model's return voyage.
For a cost estimate, please send us some photos and the length of your ship model. [email protected] . Please help us be efficient and do not call. We really need photos. In general, for a model ship that has rigging and masts, your minimum cost is only $900. For other types such as model yacht, ocean liner model, container ship model, ect., the minimum is $1,100. For a repair performed in Europe: $1,300 for all types. Below are some of our representative restorations for your enjoyment. At the residence of the owner of the luxury cruise liner OCEANIA CRUISES , Miami:

"I just want to let you know how thrilled my clients are with their ship. Thank you for taking the time and care in bringing it back to life. Nicole Hitchcock." "The work you did on my wife’s schooner, The Sword Fish, is beautiful! I too love to look at eye level from the stern to imagine the rough conditions under which the model was made. I guess men were really men back then!! Freeman."
Have a very fine model boat in need of repair? Here's our sample.
"I contacted several model ship places in California for a repair and only you accepted it. Before I found you I had dragged myself to a big retailer and disappointed myself after learning that they imported everything and all they could fix was to glue back broken-off parts. More surprise was that another retailer whose web site appeared highly professional did not even have a warehouse! He also knew zip about building ship models. Anyway, it's a great pleasure to know you guys who are saving my sinking ships. Sincerely, Jim P."
"Hello! So I finally was able to give the ship back to my Dad! He was ecstatic to see it all repaired. He had no idea it was happening, and was absolutely thrilled to see it back in full glory. I wanted to let you guys know and thank you once again for your hard work and service! Thank you again! Brandon N"
" She has arrived and is beyond gorgeous! My son’s face was priceless and he actually thought I had somehow found another ship as he remembered how tragically damaged she was! He’s happy that a case is being made since right away my granddaughter (9) wanted to touch it. He was telling his family stories of how he ran around on her as a kid and all the fantastic treats he used to get in the galley etc. Again, THANK YOU!!! Sincerely, Kate"'
One of the most sentimental moments we have experienced happened in September 2019. We picked up, repaired, and delivered a fine model build by a brother (now deceased) and passed down to his sister who's now bed ridden in a senior center in San Diego. We have revived innumerable loving memories with restorations but that was perhaps the first time we felt the full meaning of our job. "Awesome!! Thank you! You can't know how much joy this will bring her." Texted her niece, who had a model repaired and 2 large display cases made by us five years prior.
We also accept commissions to repair/restore other types of artwork. Below is one for the CEO of one of the world's most prominent music record companies, located in Santa Monica. We had this job after repairing his one-of-a-kind HMS Tiger model.
We also accepts jobs to build crates for the most odd-shaped art pieces. We charge only two third of what specialized art movers do but do a better job as model ships have the oddest shapes and we are extremely successful at packing them.
Choosing a restorer might be tricky sometimes. You might think a well-known model kit company would be an optimal choice but you should think twice. A kit maker is specialized in computer drawing, molding, and prefabrication. He is good at making thousands of kits in a short time but not necessarily good in constructing models, let alone restoring, which requires very a dissimilar skill set. He uses cheap flimsy wood for his products. We might appear less authoritative compared to a big model kit producer but our skills in ship modeling and restoration are way superior. Our materials are peerless.
We hope the info presented above is helpful for you. If you have any questions, just send us an email. Wish you the best.

Model Ship Repair and Refurbishment services
Model ship repair service.
As with their full size couterparts model ships can require the same sort of professional attention that real vessels receive during their working lives. Accidents happen from time to time and models can be damaged in transit to shows around the world or for example when your company moves premises. We provide free quotes for insurance claims for accidental damage to model boats and all our repair work is carried out to the same exacting standards of durability and finish that all our modelmaking work is known for.
Model Ship Refurbishment and Refitting service
Model ships should be as close a representation of real vessels as possible. But scale models can be finished some time before a vessel enters service and sometimes before the ships' end design is finalised. A vessel might be refitted with additional equipment, modified to fulfill different roles or simply repainted as an owners corporate identity changes.
If it is important to you that your models accurately reflect the in service configuration of a vessel we offer a model ship refit service. With modifications, additional parts and refinishing we can bring your model completely up to date so it accurately represents your ship as it is in service today, enhancing its effectiveness as a promotional tool and maximising the investment you originally placed in your model.
If you have any enquiries about our model boat refit or repair services please contact us for a Free Model Repair Quote

Model case and base replacement
We also offer a case replacement service, perhaps over the years your company has had models made by different companies and the bases don't match or have become damaged. Flag Model Making construct high quality hardwood bases in the UK to your specification.

Just like the real yacht must go back to the shipyard for repairs and maintenance, the scale model has the same needs. Due to the many boat shows, transport or bad handling, faded colours because of the UV light the scale model yacht can suffer
damages and lose its glow. From collection through the maintenance and repair to delivery and installation we offer a complete service. Whether working for a corporate client or private owner the full confidentiality is guaranteed.
In the beginning of every project, we review the photos provided to determine the current condition of the yacht model, based on which we make an initial estimation. A full report explaining all the stages involved will be made based on the inspections carried out once the model arrives in our workshop. Minor repair and maintenance may include full scale cleaning and touch ups. Structural damages as a result of hits, cracks and bad handling may have to be rebuild. In order to repair fundamental components in some cases, undamaged parts or structures must be taken apart. Lost or destroyed parts can be replicated based on the existing or designed using plans.
The finish of the paintwork of a yacht model is essential in the perception of the viewer. Models exposed to UV light for a long period of time resulting in yellowing and faded colours should be polished or resprayed. We work with a
wide range of materials, and we are able to produce a verity of finishes to fulfil the desired results. Having the ability to match any colour, material and shape in a seamless way we bring back the brilliance of your yacht model.

Model Restoration
A Sneak Peak into the world of Model Boat Restoration…
We are noticing more and more ship, boat and yacht model owners are bringing in their models for Restoration. Whether the models were bought at an auction, build by a keen enthusiast or passed down generations, there always seems to be a fascinating story behind the models we get coming through the door.
So whether the models have been damaged through wear and tear, attacked by pets, damaged in transit, built up dust, unfinished models, you name it we’ve seen it. Each restoration is different but essentially it’s about maintaining the integrity and keep as much of the original model preserved.
Our lead model Restorer Plamen, (pictured below) has almost 30 years’ experience to his name; a keen enthusiast and perfectionist, Plamen has a real passion for building and restoring models to their glory.
When asking Plamen, he says ‘the most important task in the restoration process was to ensure that any work done on the model would keep the model as close as possible to the original model.’
Above we have an example of a Model Boat Restoration carried out in the UK. The photos sent to us by the client capture the model boat in its prime. These photos allowed us to ensure that any work done to the model would not change the general appearance of the model too much from the original.
But at 2 meters in length and filled with heavy machinery it wasn’t an easy task.
From examining the model we noticed that unfortunately the wood was rotten.
In the above picture the extent of the rot can be seen clearly along the left side of the deck.
The model’s deck also had several removable parts which allowed access to the parts beneath.
The above picture displays how the deck has been removed to show the parts underneath. During the restoration process several new parts for underneath the deck were produced and replaced the old parts.
The old paint was stripped from the model; as seen in the picture below.
The model was then repainted, giving attention to matching the old model’s colours and giving the model boat an authentic look.
The above picture shows the model after the restoration process had been completed. The photo is a good representation of the quality of the painting that was undertaken.
The structure was treated with conservation solutions, to avoid woodworms affecting the model again.
In total the restoration process took 8 weeks.
Displayed below are two photos; one which shows the condition of the model when it was initially received and the second showing the model following the completion of the restoration process.
The above two pictures show the extent of the quality and care involved in the restoration process. They also demonstrate how we have closely matched the client’s expectations whilst also improving the overall quality and appearance of the model.
