Got my eye on a new to me Formula 272...
- Add to quote
I'm going to look at an 88 formula 272SR1 hopefully this weekend, anything I need to look for besides the usual? I know the silent thunder swim platforms had some issues, but i'm not sure what/where to be looking for it. Also, it's listed as having 454 mags, but the silencer covers are gone, so i'm having trouble telling from pictures whether they are or not. Assuming they are, what kind of speeds am I looking at? I read in another post that with with stock 330's these boats were good for low-mid 60's, couldn't find much info on one with MAG motors. Owner claims 70, which I don't think is too unreasonablef. This is the best I can do right the moment for an engine pic: http://images.traderonline.com//img/6/plcnad/5404548/88942837_7thumb_550x410.jpg Last question is fuel consumption, and this may be worthy of a post of it's own, but i'll consolidate to save space. take a guess at which would be better on fuel... 90 242SS with a 550hp 540 running 70+ (obviously sucking down premium) (4150lbs dry weight). OR an 88 272 sr1 with stock mags (i'm assuming mags are ok on 87 octane). (5750lbs dry weight) I'm almost inclined to believe that the 272 would be the same or better cost wise once you add the additional cost of premium...thoughts? Eric
anymore pics? in 88 they only came with the 330's expect low sixty's un less they are fresh rebuilds with a little extra kick in the you know what that boat is not going 70! my buddy has one with 1200 hours its tired but runs 61-63 you will love the cabin I sure do, but I opted for the newer 27 with the single bb, look for the usual, stringer bulkhead stuff, that u can tell anywayz, waaz it in salt?? thats a whole new can of worms, ask about recent maint especially the plus/wires AND inpellers because the are a c###sucker on them boats ask anyone here especially Mopower & eyeinstine they will have a whole ton of input for you
also take not that the 272 is a healthy 9-10000 pounds loaded up make sure u can pull it big differance towing that VS the 242
Heres the full ad.. no salt water, though I imagine it's seen some brackish. http://www.boattrader.com/listing/1988-Formula-SR1-88942837 As far as towing, with either boat i'll need a new tow vehicle, I doubt my Grand Cherokee would be very happy in front of either of them. :laugher: He is the second owner, he has all the service records for the 6 years he's owned it, and quite a few of the original owners records. The engines were rebuilt in 97 i think, stock rebuilds. I'm going to ask to look through them when I go see the boat
I know the intakes are different between the mag and the non mag 454, i'm just having trouble finding a good picture of a non mag intake to compare it to. They definitely look different than the intake I had on my 7.4 Scarab, though that was a 96'.
Those speeds surprise me... I know of a 292 w/ 350s that will run just over 70, step bottom yes... I also remember an old friends 272 with 350's that I thought ran close to 70
plenty of locals from this site from that area, I think even are forum god is from there somewhere, my thoughts are thats salt water beware, how long has he owned it???? this boat has been for sale forever,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, that I can remember, so something is up did he redo the hull?? make sure it was done right beware of blisters, int looks nice looking foward, such as bolsters dash, gauges are all there cabin looks mint. trailer? none listed and kept on life leads me to belive there is not one, plus plan on a 3/4 ton to pull it with, and to touch on your question above if you can keep off the hammer the fuel consumption isn't too bad, remember its big heavy and will ride like a tank,, me and my buddy did a run before I sold my 242 and he did'nt use all that much more fuel then me considering, thats what made me want the 272, but remember we were only runnning 30/35 miles an hour the whole trip, but all the maintence is DBL

there is no trailer with the boat. I think it's been listed for so long because the price isn't very good. Especially with no trailer. I talked with him on the phone last night, He told me he's negotiable on the price. That said, with what you see in the ad, and no trailer, what do you think is a fair price for the boat? (assuming no red flags) I'm assuming i'm going to pay 3-4 grand for a no frills trailer for it.
RS remember the 292 is a whole new game from technology to weight.. the 87-91 272's were super heavy, my buddy scalled his at 10k, 350's VS 454's there wasn't a big differance back then the 272 was 2-3 mph faster with the 454's but the 350's were way easier on the pocket I belive in 91 the 272 did come with a mag, I've seen 1 or 2 of them they got closer to 70, yes the intakes were differant back then not sure what it loked like on your scarab, I'm not to familiar with that year, but in the 88-92 area the mag had a higher intake I could tell the differance in person but don't know if you could pick it out on a pic
honestly I'm really turned off but the boat being refinished, thats just me, some may like it, I love the imon graphics from them days how many hours are on the boat?? how many supposibly on the engines?> 15k also keep in mind if you do it i can help you with a new trailer :winker:
sorry I dont have any pics anymore
is the first trailer you had made still for sale? I didn't see the ad in the classifieds. Boat has 700 hours, I think he said the engines have about half of that on the rebuilds, apparently I didn't write that down in my notes. I'll find out for sure this weekend. I'm more worried about the drives than the engines. 700 hours seems like a lot for bravos if they've never been rebuilt/replaced As far as it being refinished, i don't know why but i like it. I like the imron pain schemes, but i'm not wild about them. This leaves me wide open for the graphics of my choice.
last I talked to him he still had that trailer, if it was maintained like he says I wouldnt be worried about the drives then again judging from the one pic he likes to run it, my buddy's 272 has almost 1300 hours org motors and drives nothing but routine stuff, granted they need to be freshened but it always runs great. I love the look of the boat really do, i just cant see refinishing a boat w/o a reason
ammaddon said: 22k seems high to me... Click to expand...
i agree, 22k is WAY high for the boat. Worry not though, I will be paying nowhere near that for the boat. 89donzi, whats the price on that trailer? email me if you don't want it posted. thanks, Eric
Another thing to look at are the drives. Make sure you are getting bravos. My 88 292 had mags with bravos but some had TRS drives. I didn't notice which it had in the ad.
the 272 only came with alpha's or bravo's,, 4500 for the trailer
this one has bravos contact info on the trailer?
Yea the swim platform/silent thunder on those models eventually get rotten. Nothing you can do will prevent it unless it has never been run. You can take it off and fix it with some glass work or go to a bar style platform. Just take a small ball peen hammer and tap on the swim platform in different spots it should sound solid not dead sound. I have a picture of my old engine with the stock 330 intake.

1st point. Don't think those are Mags in that boat, but only 90% sure.... 2nd point is I think in today's market, that's WAY too high. There are Cigarette Bullets out there that can be had for $25-$30K sitting on a trailer right now. That's a bigger boat with an enclosed pump-out head, larger cabin, better made, and better resale. I saw a 272 for sale on a trailer a few months ago for $14,500 that looked in OK shape (didn't stop and crawl over/under it). I think the boat is worth $10-15K max if it passes a survey in the current market.

I liked the graphics that were factory on them rigs too. Too bad they're gone. When I first saw the black and yellow interior, I was looking forward to same collr "ZZ Top" looking outside. Good Luck with the deal.

But, fuel prices will also make your trip on the water more expensive and I will assume you get 1-2mpg. So that's 400-800 gallons of fuel to take your boat to NY via water- which is somewhere in $1800-4000 range depending on your fuel burn rate. So from my eye truck shipping for 6-7K would be a deal. I think the killer for trucking cost is beam.
