Explore the tranquil waters of Norfolk’s only canal – The North Walsham and Dilham Canal – by hiring a canoe at Wayford Bridge. The little boating centre, next to a road bridge on the River Ant, is a convenient place to moor for the night and has a pub, farm shop and cafe plus a garage with a convenience store.
The best place to stop in Wayford Bridge is the free moorings just before the road bridge. Make sure you check your boat’s clearance if you wish to pass under the bridge where there are privately managed moorings.
Wayford Bridge has plenty of facilities for an overnight stay. The Wayford Bridge Inn overlooks the river near the bridge and there is an excellent farm shop, plant centre and cafe a short distance along the main road. On the opposite side of the bridge there is a garage with a convenience store.
Make sure you hire a canoe from Bank Boats (located next to the bridge) to explore Norfolk’s only artificial, locked sailing canal – the North Walsham and Dilham Canal – which joins the River Ant just upstream of Wayford Bridge. 01692 582457.
The canal was built in 1826 for sailing wherries to carry cargo nearly nine miles to mills in Antingham (near North Walsham) but was abandoned about a century later. Today the historic waterway is gradually being restored for recreation and you can paddle along the first two miles of the canal from Wayford Bridge to Honing Lock. The tranquil waterway is only accessible to non powered craft making it a relaxing place to canoe through beautiful countryside. Look out for the abundant wildlife – including kingfishers and water voles.
For a shorter paddle try exploring along Dilham Dyke to Dilham Staithe where you can eat at the historic Cross Keys Inn (see Eating Out).
Wayford Bridge Mooring for five boats on the downstream side of the bridge.
Wayford Bridge Yacht Station moorings Moorings on a long grassy bank upstream of the bridge. A mooring fee is collected at your boat.
Wayford Bridge Inn Hotel, pub and restaurant serving breakfast, lunch and dinner. Has a patio garden overlooking the river and a choice of real ales. 01692 582 414.
Vera’s Coffee Shop Cafe at A G Meale and Son farm shop and plant centre. Serves home cooked breakfast, lunch and afternoon tea using their own or local produce. 01692 583971 .
The Cross Keys Inn – Dilham (accessed via Dilham Dyke) Historic inn serving pub food and real ales near Dilham Staithe. This is accessed by boat via Dilham Dyke, which is popular for canoeing. 01692 536398.

The granaries, norwich | nr12 9ln, self catering.
- Description
The Granaries are 5 riverside cottages offering excellent self-catering holiday accommodation, located alongside the marina on the River Ant, within the Norfolk Broads National Park. Situated at Wayford Bridge, just 5 miles north-east of Wroxham, the cottages are ideally suited for those exploring the area by boat, bike, car or on foot! Hopstack and Malt Shovel Cottages were sensitively converted from the original mid-19th century grain store. They are both upside-down cottages featuring the main living areas upstairs, also with a private balcony overlooking the river. These properties retain original wooden beams and vaulted ceilings, adding to the charm. Grebe, Coot and Heron Cottages are contemporary homes, each with a private riverside patio. All 5 cottages sleep 4, with an open plan living area, TV, Wifi, double bedroom, twin room, bathroom and have use of a dinghy moored alongside. Guests can also access the heated pool, sauna and communal outdoor seating area facilities.

Brand new Moscow walks: From Kropotkinskaya to Gorky Park
A little advice from RBTH: All walking routes around Moscow found in guidebooks or recommended by social networks are already hopelessly outdated. In the last three years alone Moscow has witnessed the addition of seven pedestrian zones to its historic center. Three huge parks have also changed to the point of becoming unrecognizable versions of their former selves. In some buildings rooftops with great views of the city have become accessible to the public and pedestrian areas have been set up along the granite embankments of the Moskva River . Even Google Street View still contains the old panoramic picture of the Yakimanskaya and Krymskaya embankments and Krymsky Bridge before the reconstruction – compare it with the new RBTH photos and see the difference!
The Moscow that travelers discover today is a different one: It's a comfortable Moscow whose center is now easily traversible on foot without the assistance of the metro .
Route No. 1: From the Cathedral of Christ the Savior to Gorky Park
Overall walking time (stops excluded): 1.5 hours
Route length: 5.5 kilometers
Kropotkinskaya metro station
Patriarshy Bridge
Balchug Island
The Yakimanskaya and Krymskaya Embankments
Muzeon and the Tretyakov Gallery
Andreyevsky Bridge
End of the Route
We recommend that you decide where to end this walk. The first option is to go to the central entrance of Gorky Park , cross the Krymsky Bridge and head to the Park Kultury metro station (red and ring line) or instead go to the right to the Oktyabrskaya (orange and ring line) metro station. Another option is to walk to the end of the Andreyevsky Bridge where you’ll reach the Frunzenskaya metro station (red line). Next to the metro there are two wonderful 19th-century estates with their own parks: The Trubetskoy estate in Khamovniki and the great writer Lev Tolstoy’s House-Museum . If you anticipate making one or both of these museums part of your walk, start early and wear comfortable shoes!
