Denison invites you to an Open House aboard SEAHAWK , a 112 Westport Superyacht located at the Safe Harbor Newport Shipyard in Newport, Rhode Island.

SEAHAWK was built to the highest standards; her captain’s keen eye for detail with a long reign for maintenance keeps her in a manner fitting a superyacht. She boasts a timeless, rich raised mahogany interior throughout; a feature Westport usually saves for their 40M+ yachts.

SEAHAWK runs at a fast 22 knot cruise with a top speed of 25 knots. A draft of only 5’6”, she gets into ports where vessels of this size frequently cannot access. Her stabilized ride takes you in luxury and comfort.

Room for eight guests in her four ensuite staterooms, the full beam master is massive with a California king bed as the centerpiece. Two more staterooms amidship for guests with a private VIP stateroom all the way forward. Four separate deck areas to enjoy under cover or out in the sun. From her aft deck to foredeck, with the flybridge and boat decks, there’s plenty of places to enjoy the water views.

And if you were on the water this weekend in Newport, you could not have missed the $175 million Feadship “Viva.” 

According to “ Superyacht Fan, ” the 94-meter vessel can host up to 14 guests — and a helicopter — with a crew of 18. 

The annual running cost? A cool $17.5 million. 

And just who owns such a ship? Superyacht Fan points to billionaire Frank Fertitta III — CEO of Station Casinos headquartered in Las Vegas and founder of Zuffa LLC, the parent entity of the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC). 

The yacht’s helicopter reportedly has the registration N702FF — pointing to his initials. 

And according to Wikipedia, Fertitta and his wife are major donors to the Republican Party and Republican candidates, having given more than $9,800,000 from 2009 to 2020.

NEWPORT YACHT CHARTERS

IDEAL TIME TO CHARTER: June – September

Newport, Rhode Island is the ideal New England port for embarking on your private yacht experience and visiting the outer islands of this New England cruising area. Arrive a day or two early to tour opulent famous mansions from a bygone era, shop along Thames Street, delight in the freshest seafood and fare from local restaurants, and experience this bustling, world-class yachting center at the mouth of Narragansett Bay.

Newport History (Alternative: Boston ) – Newport offers an abundance of cultural activities. During the summer there are several music festivals such as the famous Newport Jazz Festival. Yachting history can be found in the Museum of Yachting and the International Yacht Restoration School. Most outstanding among the several historic landmarks are the famous Mansions. Take a late afternoon stroll along Cliff Walk, a 3-mile path along the rocky coast that offers even more spectacular views of the mansions and the sea.

Block Island – Block Island is a leisurely cruise from Newport Harbor. Great Salt Pond is the ideal evening anchorage for striking sunsets. Unlike her competing Southern New England islands, this one is a step back in time. Victorian hotels are still active and standing, proudly dotting the sloping hillsides where the main harbor activities take place. “We are all here, because we are not all there” is coined by the local bar of Club Soda. Walking, biking and a helicopter tour of this quiet island are worth including in your trip.

Cuttyhunk and Wood’s Hole – Only a two-hour cruise from Newport towards Cape Cod is Cuttyhunk (120 registered voters). It may have a funny name, but is one of the interesting islands in the Elizabethan Island cluster. (Read about Dukes County which includes Martha’s Vineyard and the Elizabeth Islands) . Fresh lobster is available at the dock for your chef to select and prepare your very special dinner. Continuing onto Woods Hole, visit the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution or the Woods Hole Historical Museum with boat model displays. A must for lunch would be fresh oysters and a cold beer.

Martha’s Vineyard – Off to Edgartown Harbor, located on Martha’s Vineyard. You will enjoy your walk through this lovely quaint New England seaside town. It was made famous by the movie JAWS. “Chappy” as the locals refer to Chappaquiddick, is a short walk over a channel bridge to view the oceanside pristine beaches. This town has the best shops, restaurants and historic churches and homes. Hire a car to explore many of the other unique towns around this island.

Nantucket Harbor – An overnight stay in Nantucket Harbor allows an early morning start to the whaling museum as well as the antique and art shops. Well-known chowder houses such as the Jared Coffin House, The Brotherhood of Thieves, and Black-Eyed Susan are an essential part of your visit.

Vineyard Sound – A leisurely cruise along Vineyard Sound brings you to Menemsha Harbor in the town of Chilmark, MV for a tour of this quintessential New England fishing village.

Tarpaulin Cove – Take some time to weigh anchor and splash in Tarpaulin Cove on the East side of Naushon Island, another of the Elizabeth Islands, originally settled by the Wampanoag Native Americans. Naushon Island is now owned by the Forbes Family, who attained wealth in the China trade. The lighthouse is not open for tours, but the views are spectacular.

Once your embarkation date is 30 days away, the other 50% is collected for the price of the yacht, plus the APA, plus the taxes due.

Nestled on the southern New England coast between Connecticut (west) and Massachusetts (north and east), Rhode Island also shares a small maritime border with Long Island, NY. Block Island, Block Island and Rhode Island Sounds, and the Atlantic Ocean are south. Though it is the smallest state by land area, Rhode Island is the second most densely populated state after New Jersey! Rhode Island, with its 400 miles of coastline, large bays, and inlets that comprise 14% of the state’s total area, is known for beautiful sandy beaches and historic seaside towns. Newport is a famed sailing center and its “Gilded Age” mansions that line the seashore, such as The Breakers, are a major tourist attraction. The world-class annual Newport International Boat Show kicks off the Boat Show season in September.

Rhode Island got its name from early explorers who sailed near Aquidneck Island, the largest island in Narragansett Bay and may have seen red fall foliage and/or red clay shoreline bluffs, giving the island a reddish appearance (rhode), though most of the state’s land area is actually part of the mainland. Narragansett Bay is Rhode Island’s primary topographical feature with over 30 islands within the bay. Aquidneck Island, the largest, consists of Portsmouth (north), Middletown, and Newport (south). Second largest island is Conanicut and third largest is Prudence Island. Block Island lies about 12-13 miles off the mainland coast and is separated from the mainland by a 10-mile-wide strait called Block Island Sound in the Atlantic Ocean. Block Island Sound extends east to Montauk Point of Long Island along with Plum Island, Gardiners Island, and Fishers Island, all part of New York State and to the Rhode Island Sound. To west the strait extends to Long Island Sound, all major waterways for recreational cruising vessels and commercial boat traffic.

Rhode Island’s first English settlement was Providence on land granted by the Narragansett people to Roger Williams in 1636, who was fleeing religious persecution. Other people who were political or religious dissidents or social outcasts fled to the area and settled Aquidneck Island, founding Portsmouth in northern part and Newport in the south. Samuel Gorton bought land from the Narragansetts in 1642 and obtained a separate charter from the crown in 1648 for the settlement he named Warwick. Roger Williams and other settlements consolidated to apply for colony status from the English crown (Charles I) as “Providence Plantations (Colony)” from 1643 to 1663, when a new charter was issued. Providence Plantations was the first colony to call for a Continental Congress in 1774 and renounce allegiance to British rule in 1776. In 1790, after the American Revolution, the new state became known as State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations and the name remained until 2020 when voters finally dropped the latter part. Rhode Island was the last of the 13 original colonies to ratify the U.S. Constitution, only after being assured that a Bill of Rights would become part of the Constitution.

The capital and most populated city is Providence, and the location of ivy league Brown University, founded in 1764, one of nine colleges granted charters before the American Revolution and the first to accept students regardless of their religious affiliation, in character with Rhode Island’s first settlers. The city’s green is now named Roger Williams Park, after the founder. Providence features the landscaped Waterplace Park and Riverwalk with the famed WaterFire art installation, a 1994 sculpture by Barnaby Evans presented on the rivers of downtown Providence. The sculpture consists of 86 burning braziers; some float just above the rivers’ surface as they flow through Waterplace Park and center of downtown Providence. Originally created in celebration of the “First Night Providence” New Year’s Eve music and performing arts festival’s 10th anniversary, it has now become an annual public art attraction.

Rhode Island had a primary role in the Industrial Revolution in New England in 1787 with the advent of cotton mills powered by flowing river water. Moses Brown of Providence and partner Samuel Slater built the first water-powered cotton mill in America, on one of the many rivers in Rhode Island. Moses Brown and brother Nicholas co-founded the college that became Brown University. Many of Rhode Island’s major metro centers today derive from industrial development along the Blackstone, Seekonk, and Providence Rivers where water-powered textile mills were built.

The fifty years following the Civil War were a time of great prosperity and affluence for Rhode Island as it became the center of the “Gilded Age” when many of the country’s most prominent and wealthiest industrialists built grand residential mansions or summer “cottages” on Rhode Island’s beautiful shores. Newport became the summer haven for New York’s uber-wealthy to build opulent estates and found private membership sports clubs for recreation and socializing. The Newport Casino, built in 1879 to 1881 by New York Herald publisher, James Gordon Bennett, Jr was the focus of “Gilded Age” social life through the 1920s for a variety of outdoor and indoor recreational activities, including lawn tennis. The first American Lawn Tennis championships were held on the Newport Casino courts. The shingle style building was designed by noted “Gilded Age” architectural firm, McKim, Mead & White. Newport Casino was designated a National Historic Landmark (NHL) in 1987 and listed on the National Register of Historical Places (NRHP) in 1970. It now houses the International Hall of Fame and features an active grass-court tennis club.

Some of the most notable historic mansions in Newport were designed by McKim, Mead & White, such as “Rosecliff,” built 1898-1902 for socialite Theresa Fair Oelrichs (silver heiress from Nevada) who commissioned the design of a summer home for entertaining on a “grand scale.” The Providence capitol building, Rhode Island State House, was also designed by McKim, Mead & White and features the fourth largest structural stone dome in the world. Another prominent architect of that era, Richard Morris Hunt, designed the Vanderbilt family’s 5-story, 70-room mansion “The Breakers” in the Beaux-Arts Renaissance Revival style, and designed Alva & William Kissam Vanderbilt’s summer cottage “Marble House” in the Beaux-Arts style of peerless opulence when completed in 1892. The mansion’s interior was used for several films (The Great Gatsby in 1974, 27 Dresses in 2008), a TV Series (America 1972-73), and a Victoria’s Secret holiday commercial in 2012. Today it is a museum run by the Newport Preservation Society. “Belcourt” was another “summer cottage” mansion designed by Richard Morris Hunt for Oliver Hazard Perry Belmont, son of August Belmont, Sr. for whom the Belmont Stakes were named. Oliver loved horses and the “castle” as it came to be known, had extensive stables and carriage areas that were part of the main house. The estate is currently owned by Harle Tinny and is the only mansion in Newport that is open to the public as a museum of antiquities and architectural & social history with a private owner in residence. Block Island was discovered in 1614 by Dutch explorer Adrian Block, who named it for himself. The island, just 13 miles from the Rhode Island coast, was settled in 1661 and incorporated in 1672 as New Shoreham. For nearly 200 years it remained a fisherman’s outpost, until the mid-1800s when steamboat passage opened up the island to visitors from the mainland for summer island getaways and sprawling Victorian beachside hotels were built to accommodate them. Tourism replaced fishing as the dominant economy. Two historical lighthouses, North Light, built in1867 of brownstone and the red-brick Southeast Lighthouse, built in 1800s, stands atop dramatic cliffs of Mohegan Bluffs overlooking rocky beaches below. Crescent Beach is a popular sandy beach on the east coast for summer visitors arriving by ferry or boat. Actor Christopher Walken has a summer home on Block Island.

Historic, summer resort town, Newport “City-By-The-Sea” on the south end of Aquidneck Island, was the site of the first US Open Tournaments in both tennis and golf, and every challenge to the annual sailing regatta, America’s Cup, for over 50 years (1930-1983) in Newport Harbor. Newport is considered the “birthplace of tennis” and “America’s First Resort” with stunning views of Newport Harbor, Narragansett Bay, and Newport Bridge. Named by major travel magazines as one of the top destinations in the country for its famed seaside mansions and other beautiful historic architecture, galleries, restaurants, shopping, and the many other activities, events and attractions enjoyed by visitors from all around the world.

The historic waterfront shopping district includes the lower Thames Street and America’s Cup Avenue that run parallel to the waterfront, the Brick Market Place with its picturesque wharves reminiscent of Newport’s seafaring days, Long Wharf Mall, Bowen’s Wharf, Washington Square, and Bannister’s Wharf & Marina with Clarke Cooke House Restaurant as its focal point. The entire area is lively with eclectic dining, boutique shops, and nightlife. Bowen’s Wharf with deep water dockage for yachts to 185ft LOA is located in the center of Newport’s waterfront and features boating, dining, cocktails, shopping, events, tours & attractions, and nightlife.

The Newport International Boat Show (NIBS) is one of the largest and most prestigious in the nation spanning 13 acres and attracting more than 40,000 visitors annually in September to Newport’s famed downtown waterfront. Coventry High School mourns beloved psychologist and coach

COVENTRY, R.I. (WJAR) — The Coventry Public Schools community is mourning one of its school psychologists, Dr. Lou Ruffolo, who worked at the district for over 23 years.

Classes were canceled Tuesday for Coventry students as they grieve Ruffolo, or Coach Ruff, as many of them called him.

Former students said his life and unexpected death will make a mark well beyond his time.

"He definitely touched a lot of people's hearts while he was here," said former student Erik Gonsalves. "Open arms, he accepted everybody, no matter who they were."

According to the superintendent, Ruffolo died after two decades with the Coventry Public School District.

Gonsalves graduated in May 2020.

He said he remembers meeting Ruffolo in kindergarten, the then 5-year-old Gonsalves unaware of the impact Ruffolo would ultimately leave on him.

"He was always just open and caring. And, you know, he took me in, you know, and he mentored me and taught me and here am I now," said Gonsalves.

He is one of hundreds of student-athletes Ruffolo coached for the Coventry Unified Basketball Team.

He said Ruffolo always stayed in touch, their latest check-in as recent as last month.

"He was always telling me, like, you know, just be the role model that you are, you know," said Gonsalves. "You've inspired a lot of people, and I really appreciate it. You know, I, I never really had anybody telling me like, I inspired somebody to do something."

He feels for current Oakers like 11th grader Chris French, who told NBC 10 News that he's devastated.

French said he's a better person and a better player because of Ruffolo's leadership.

"He helped me out with my issues going on, but he was awesome," said French.

Officials have not released the cause of death.

School will reopen Wednesday with grief counselors available for any students or staff.

Tax on selling Newport homes over $2 million fails to pass. Why the idea isn't going away.

NEWPORT – A plan to tax home sales above $2 million was shelved on Wednesday, not necessarily because Newport City Councilors did not like the idea, but so that the proposal could be reworked to fare better in the General Assembly.

“There are four members [of the General Assembly] who represent this community,” Mayor Xay Khamsyvoravong said. “The east side of Providence has more representation than the entire city of Newport, and so when we ask them to do something, we need to be crystal clear with our intent.”

The City Council had continued the original mansion tax proposal from a previous meeting, where several residents and the president of the Newport County Board of Realtors pushed back against the idea. The resolution , recommended by the city administration, was to ask the city’s state legislators to file a bill that would allow the city to impose a 3% tax on property sales over $2 million to help fund the $500 million in infrastructure improvements the city projects it needs to be completed over the course of the next five years.

On Wednesday, the council picked the discussion back up and ultimately decided there was a lack of consensus as to what they wanted to do with the resolution, especially as some councilors wanted to include possible exemptions for certain property owners.

Since the city requires permission from the state legislature to impose the tax, Khamsyvoravong said the city needs to be clearer about what they are proposing.

“The last thing I want is a bunch of legislators who are not from Newport, who don’t understand Newport, to be dictating what our tax policy should be at the local level. I don’t think we should give them that latitude.”

Councilors offer support for mansion tax

Despite tabling the discussion, many councilors expressed favorable opinions of the idea. Councilor Mark Aramli, who introduced the resolution at the prior meeting, said he was in favor of a progressive mansion tax. He said, however, that Newport’s recent property value reassessments made him realize that $2 million may be too low a threshold, as he would not consider many homes in Newport that are now worth $2 million to be “mansions.”

“In analyzing the math, I think a number of us have realized $2 million is not a mansion anymore,” Aramli said. “It could be a 1,600- to 1,800-square-foot home in the right neighborhood in the city today. I’m still generally favorable of this mechanism as a way for the city to raise revenue, but for me to support it, it truly has to be a mansion tax.”

Aramli suggested amending the proposal to raise the threshold to $2.5 million and adjust the language so that the tax only impacts sales above the threshold; however, the item was tabled before the amendment was voted on. He argued that increasing the threshold to $2.5 million, which is the same number used by Connecticut for its real estate conveyance tax, would narrow the impact.

After the recent reassessment, 1,103 properties are now worth more than $2 million, which is about 10% of the total properties in the city. Aramli’s amendment would cut the number of potentially affected properties by 269. Of the remaining 832, about 23% were previously assessed at less than $2 million and 40% were previously worth less than $2.5 million.

Aramli is also one of the only councilors that would be affected by this tax if he chose to sell one of his properties. Like many Newporters, his home on Beacon Hill Road and his property on Hammersmith Road doubled in value during the past reassessment, and are now both worth around $2.8 million.

Councilors Jeanne Marie Napolitano and Angela McCalla also spoke up in support of the proposed tax. Councilor Lynn Underwood said she was in favor of the idea behind the resolution, but was the one to argue that the city needs to refine its request before submitting it to the state legislature. Part of her argument hinged on comments from Fire Chief Harp Donnelly, who, while in support of this tax and its use to fund infrastructure, suggested the council include exemptions that would lessen the impact on Newport residents.

“I think we need exemptions that target actual Newporters that want to stay in the community,” Ceglie said. “I just think this needs more work.”

Solicitor Christopher Behan noted there are some exemptions included in the resolution as they are tied to statewide exemptions, such as transfers from land trusts and nonprofits.

Councilor Charlie Holder said he was not generally in favor of conveyance taxes with price thresholds as they disproportionately impact commercial properties. Councilor David Carlin, who represents the Third Ward, was opposed to the idea entirely, saying the tax would further put the burden of paying for infrastructure costs on homeowners in Newport rather than tourists who visit.

“This is a tax on residents of Newport, there’s absolutely no question about that,” Carlin said. “You’re living in Newport, you’re selling your house, it's a tax on you.”
