Sarissa - the family sailing yacht with a performance edge

We set off from Porto Cervo on the 42.6 metre carbon sloop Sarissa – completed at Vitters just two months previously and named after a long spear used in Hellenistic warfare – bound for Palma. As we made our way through the Tyrrhenian Sea past the cluster of picturesque islands to the north, her captain, Greg Monks, told me something of the background to the boat. ‘ Sarissa was built for an experienced boat owner with a young family. He wanted a performance yacht that they could spend long periods of time on and go to remote, isolated places where they could enjoy activities including fishing, diving, spear fishing and rock climbing.’

The brief to combine both comfortable, extended family cruising with a performance edge – the yacht will compete in several of the superyacht regattas – fell on naval architect Bill Tripp. ‘ Sarissa’s lineage stems from the aluminium Mystère and the carbon/composite Saudade ,’ stated Tripp. ‘She is a sleek pilothouse sloop with a fully modern hull shape, sail plan and foils. Like Mystère she is built to MCA; like Saudade she has a sleek hull and a racy edge to her performance; and like both, she has a lifting keel.’

Tripp included an aft cockpit in his design, but it was the owner who had the idea that it should also be an occasional swimming pool. ‘We filled it up for the children when they first arrived after a long plane journey,’ first mate Brad Walker recalled. ‘You should have seen their faces when they saw it all glistening in the sun with floating ducks and a water hammock in it.’

ShowBoats Design Award winner

Sarissa was awarded the Naval Architecture Award at the 2012 ShowBoats Design Awards

Sarissa has captive reel winches for the sheets, running backstays and main halyard, keeping the vast deck areas wonderfully safe and uncluttered. The owner put aside early concerns that an arch for the mainsheet might spoil the line of the yacht, and decided that keeping his children out of harm’s way was paramount. The result is an arch very much in keeping with the deck styling, which provides an uninterrupted deck space between the two cockpits. It will also have a number of innovative uses: it can support a climbing training-board so the owner can practice rock climbing, for instance, and there are plans to suspend a projector from its underside to display films on a screen mounted to the backstays.

For racing, Sarissa will use a square-topped mainsail. To allow this to happen, the normally fixed, twin masthead backstays will become running backstays, when their lower ends are transferred to the cruising runner tackles and their captive reel winches. In addition, the yacht will carry a staysail, a code one and a ‘top down’ furling spinnaker, each on its own furling cable.

The three people mainly responsible for Sarissa’s creation were Bill Tripp, Louis Hamming from Vitters and Jonathan Rhoades from interior design studio Rhoades Young Designs.

Tripp met the owner in November 2006. ‘He wanted a go-anywhere type of boat, with a sports car feel to it,’ he said. ‘He wanted to experience adventures when he got to destinations but he also wanted to enjoy getting there.’

‘Our last boat was a Swan 82, which was fantastic,’ added the owner. ‘But we outgrew it and wanted to go up in size, but didn’t want to lose the experience of sailing. We still wanted to be in touch with the wind and the water.’ Initially a boat of around 36 metres was discussed, but Rhoades Young’s subsequent involvement and the suggestion that the owner’s family might grow, necessitated that the boat should do so as well.

Sarissa’s construction didn’t start until early 2009, which gave plenty of design time. ‘That’s really ideal not to rush that period because you get to develop your ideas,’ Tripp said.

_Sarissa’s _carbon hull was built in the UK at Green Marine – a company since bought by Vitters – then taken to Holland for completion. Hamming, Tripp and Rhoades all agree that building a carbon boat requires a lot more coordination between all parties, to maximise the use of space throughout, because the options for cutting through the structure are not as straightforward as they can be in a metal boat. For instance, to incorporate the vertical hull windows – which give wonderful ‘sky to sea’ views throughout the accommodation – required a great deal of planning with regard to both hull structure and service routes.

Sarissa’s interior décor mainly consists of three timber varieties and very little in the way of fabrics – an interior style that, according to Rhoades Young ‘was to represent the romanticism of sailing and travel’. The result is a synthesis of an elegant sailing yacht and a relaxed beach house.

‘The owners have modern tastes but they wanted the boat to have a warm, cosy, family feel for their amazing adventures,’ said Rhoades. The headlinings, floors and several bulkhead panels are oak with various washed treatments. Other bulkheads and much of the furniture is cherry, but darker materials have been used outboard in the lower cabins. ‘We used the rosewood and dark leather to help express the difference in geometry between the rectilinear interior furniture and the beautiful flowing lines of the hull and portlights,’ Rhoades continued. ‘And we wanted to express the structure of the yacht, so we have the exposed mast and carbon claddings over the frames. We couldn’t show the actual frames, as the whole interior is floating for sound and vibration control.’

Forward of the main saloon there are three examples of Rhoades’ philosophy that ‘on a boat of this size we need to double-use space and ensure that 100 per cent of the boat is being used 100 per cent of the time’. Between the dining area and the galley there is a removable fore-and-aft bulkhead that allows either formal dining or a casual family breakfast room atmosphere; the study, which has a more serious ambiance with its predominantly rosewood surfaces, can be converted to a double guest cabin, with the dayhead then becoming its en suite bathroom; and the lower saloon is a cosy family snug area as well as the passageway from the main saloon.

Rhoades used various techniques to create the illusion of extra space. For instance, by opening up the mast head bulkhead and carefully staggering the interior volumes diagonally, it has created vistas of over 13 metres in both directions from the upper saloon of a 42 metre boat, making the yacht feel much bigger than the sum of its parts.

In combination with this, passageways have been omitted by incorporating them into the living spaces, with the exception of the aft curved corridor, which is a special experience in itself. It creates a generous double-height lobby at its entrance and then curves through the aft ship to a feature rotunda outside the owner’s cabin, naturally lit by the deck above.

And in the owner’s and guest cabins aft, there are open doorways to the bathrooms, with just the basins on view and the more private sections hidden around corners, extending the visual length of the cabins. The owner’s cabin has a great deal of natural light, a lot of which comes from windows that look into the swimming pool, adding to the fun element evident throughout the boat.

The children’s cabin – linked to a nanny’s cabin through a shared bathroom – is Rhoades’ favourite, and here the fun continues. ‘The idea was to make it a little yacht for the children within the big yacht,’ he said. ‘With the inboard bulkhead mirroring the hull side and the aft bulkhead veneered to look like the front of a traditionally-planked boat.’ Education and entertainment are both evident in the deckhead, where scores of tiny fibre optics represent the stars of the night sky, with the Northern or Southern Hemisphere selected at the flick of a switch.

In many deck saloons the seating is raised to enhance outside views, but _Sarissa’s _owner made the deliberate decision not to do this. ‘It was more important to the family to have a flat single deck that flowed well and with good headroom,’ Rhoades explained. ‘You still have a sense of being in touch with nature, as the space is bathed in natural light. It’s all part of having a series of different experiences.’ When standing, however, or when sitting at the navigation station or bar, the all-round views are excellent, and the gently undulating line created by the oak surround above the windows – mostly determined by Tripp’s external styling but enhanced by Rhoades – is particularly pleasing.

Before our voyage the owner and his family had enjoyed two separate Mediterranean cruises. ‘We couldn’t be happier,’ he told me. ‘We started this process five years ago, but we couldn’t know it would all fit together until we saw her on the water and first sailed her. Some of the unique elements like the paired vertical hull windows and the swimming pool have worked out really well.’

After a five-week period in Palma, where Vitters attended to small finishing touches necessitated by a rushed departure from the yard and the subsequent experience of using the boat, Sarissa went to the Caribbean for a Christmas family cruise. Now it’s back to the Mediterranean for summer and after that further afield, perhaps to the Pacific, where the owners will continue to enjoy their amazing adventures.

OVERWHELMING RAIN OF PRESTIGIOUS AWARDS FOR SARISSA

…at Boat International’s Design & Innovation Awards in Kitzbühel, Austria:

  • Best Exterior Design – Sailing Yachts: Sarissa
  • Best Interior Design – Sailing Yachts: Sarissa
  • Best Naval Architecture – Sailing Yachts: Sarissa

Aside of the recognition for the design, there is obviously excitement and gratitude on the part of the build team, who turned the design into reality. In addition, the team of Royal Huisman is particularly honored by the following additional awards:

  • Eco Award: Sarissa’s board systems
  • Innovation of the Year: Sarissa’s forward facing retractable electric propulsion

Sarissa – project 404 – high-performance sloop with retractable propulsion – 59.7m / 196ft – naval architecture: Malcolm McKeon – interior design: Liaigre – owners’ representative: Gregory Monks – hull material: Alustar® aluminium – superstructure: Carbon composite – delivery by Royal Huisman: 2023 – more information about Sarissa can be found at this website > delivered yachts [ link ]

Comments from the report by the judges:

Outstanding Exterior Design – Sailing Yachts: “…the level of development and detail on board Sarissa, which is based on a performance cruising boat profile, won the judges over. They remarked on the ‘stunning coachroof’ perfectly sleek and integrated; the ‘very clean’ design made possible by the hidden captive winches and hardware; the ‘lovely shapes’; and the design and execution level of the exterior furniture in the very livable cockpit, which several judges said they had never seen to date on a sailing yacht. The design perfectly reflects the brief of the experienced owners who wished for a modern-looking yacht with easy water access, comfort, shade, infinite water views, a jacuzzi and a climbing wall, along with performance. From bow to stern, no detail has been overlooked.”

Best Interior Design – Sailing Yachts: “In Greek, sarissa means a long, sharp spear. Its innovation in the third century BCE facilitated Alexander the Great’s empire, thus it is synonymous with technology, speed, strength and excellence. This Sarissa is all those things in a very private family boat destined for long passages and time at anchor. The interior is relaxed, homelike, fresh in chic simplicity and intelligent in the use of space. Vertical portlights drove the interior arrangement and led to the development of custom furniture that would not obscure the views, nor are features such as chainplates, sloping hull sides or the keel trunk hidden. The colour palette is simple with clear light oak, white lacquer and accenting leather. The unpredictability of the layout is a key feature. All cabins are unique, corridors gently curve, stairs are off centreline, the owner’s suite flows to a private beach club and the cinema hosts cosy elevated reading nooks.”

Best Naval Architecture – Sailing Yachts:  “The four finalists for this category prove that sailing yachts continue to get more efficient and performance-oriented each year. After the naval architecture subcommittee crunched the numbers – evaluating the yachts on 35 points – the two top candidates were a hair’s breadth apart, although their mission statements were somewhat different. While Nilaya had the more complex brief and an innovative construction approach, the final result is that Sarissa presents the best all-around sailing ability, range, comfort quotient and stability. Both naval architects availed themselves of high-end CFD and FEA research. However, managing the much larger weights and loads of Sarissa, especially with multiple hull and deck openings, the in-boom furling of the world’s largest flat-top mainsail built in 3Di RAW and the innovation of massive fully retractable forward-facing propulsion drives, won the day.”

Note the clean hydrodynamic hull with retractable electric drive propulsion units retracted.  A video of the folding out process can be found at this website: discover > innovation > 1. sustainabilty [ link ]

Eco Award: “Sarissa presents a multi-faceted approach to cruising with minimal environmental impact, from wind-driven propulsion, hydrogenerators and waste heat recovery to black and grey water treatment and trash management. Most of her power and propulsion needs are met with just one variable-speed genset and a 380kWh battery bank that can deliver four to eight hours of stored energy. Batteries charge via the propellers underway or when freewheeling during sailing. All rigging and spars and the mainsheet are airfoil sections, reducing drag. A Piranha Biological Marine Sanitation Device produces effluent cleaner than MARPOL standards and assures all cleaning and bathroom products are 100 per cent biodegradable and non-toxic. To minimise the waste produced, the galley is equipped with a food digester that uses biological enzymes to break down and digest up to 10 kilograms of food waste daily, a compactor for plastics and cardboard and a glass crusher for bottles and jars.”

Innovation of the Year: Forward-facing, retractable electric propulsion: “Royal Huisman boldly chose to install the first Hydrosta forward-facing retractable electric azipod propulsion for reasons of redundancy, efficiency and improved performance under sail on board Sarissa. Opening doors allows the propulsion legs to swing down from inside the hull, and the doors re-close to create a smooth underwater profile. These 500kW units rotate through 90 degrees, replacing the need for a stern thruster, which saves weight and noise. Being electric drives and located along with their battery stack forward under machinery and watersports stowage, the system removes noise from the guest areas, plus the yacht can be away from a dock or mooring without starting an engine. The pulling, fixed-pitch propellers linked to permanent magnet motors act like underwater turbines, charging the batteries and providing carbon-free power to the ship’s systems, reducing demand on the Volvo gensets.”

It is not easy to be objective about the quality of your own work. Organizations such as the International Superyacht Society Awards and their expert, independent juries help to provide an unbiased measure of achievement. How a square top mainsail helped superyacht Sarissa take off

Yachting World

  • November 17, 2016

Refitting the 42.3m Tripp superyacht Sarissa with one of the world’s biggest square-top carbon mains took her to another level, says her captain Gregory Monks

sarissa 2 yacht

Upgrading horsepower always gets the boys excited. So, when the decision came to upgrade Sarissa ’s pinhead mainsail to an aggressive square-top, the project was approached with considerable enthusiasm.

Sarissa , a 42.6m/140ft Tripp-designed carbon sloop, was originally designed around this thumping square-top mainsail.

The Southern Spars rig package, along with her powerful 3:1 running backstays, was created to run with either the pinhead or a square-top mainsail.

The numbers looked impressive: the square head of the sail would be 4.5m long. This is a purposeful 25 per cent of the foot length, the same ratio that was used by the TP52 fleet in the 2015 race season. The mainsail area would jump up from 495m2 to 591m2, an increase of almost 20 per cent. That’s quite a leap. This would be one of the largest square-tops ever built in the world.

Sarissa has been sailing the world’s oceans since 2011, impressing everyone with her fast sailing performance. She has never been lacking in power, but the idea of maximising her sailing potential and giving her the horsepower she was designed for was a natural move forward, especially when considering her future racing plans.

Tripp Design and North Sails put together the new sail package, including an upgraded jib and staysail. North’s flagship 3Di 780 full carbon sailcloth was chosen. With the sail specifications finalised, it was time to focus on the finer details, including the operation. An extensive service period in Auckland, New Zealand, in early 2016, offered the ideal opportunity to have her new equipment fitted.

North Sails worked closely alongside Rig Pro of Southern Spars to design a system that was not only robust and effective, but also efficient to use. From Rig Pro’s perspective, adding the performance benefits of a square-top main to the cruising convenience of a furling boom presented a bit of a challenge.

The main problem was what to do with the large sail area supported by the gaff batten when you wanted to stow the sail. A slick system for hooking and unhooking the headboard car was devised, thereby enabling the square head of the sail to be stowed in the boom when not in use.

Help from the crew

“One of the more interesting challenges was that Sarissa required a system that was able to be operated utilising just two crewmembers,” explains Matt Smeaton, one of North Sails’ superyacht detail specialists. “This meant the control system needed to be easy to manage from deck level, avoiding the need for a crewmember to go aloft in a bosun’s chair as had been the case with previous designs for other systems.

“We were given a brief that the crew wanted the mainsail to be easy to hoist and lower, and quick to set up,” he adds.

“With both North Sails and Southern Spars being located in Auckland, it enabled us to work closely together in developing the system.”

Rig Pro explains that the top of the mainsail could be locked and unlocked from the headboard car by hand simply by pulling a line. The line hoists the specially designed head ring of the mainsail on to a hook on the headboard car, so the sail can be hoisted.

Extensive testing of the hoist system was carried out in North Sails’ loft in Auckland.

Extensive testing of the hoist system was carried out in North Sails’ loft in Auckland.

When it comes to furling the sail, the line is pulled again, lifting the head ring off the hook and pulling a trigger so the head of the sail comes free. Now it can be lowered and easily flaked on top of the rest of the sail that is furled on the mandrel.

To reduce the amount of sail left exposed further, the pre-feeder, which loads the sail on to the mast-track, was extended so the gaff batten would sit almost inside the boom shell. The result is a sail that’s almost completely hidden when furled. There is now less sail exposed than was the case when Sarissa was fitted with a pinhead main.

At its new sail loft in Auckland, North Sails designed and built a test rig, making it possible for the sail system to be tested extensively before installation. As part of the process, the team invited the crew of Sarissa to the loft to work alongside them. This ensured that the sail would operate smoothly from its first use on the yacht because the crew would be familiar with the system from the first hoist.

“It was great to work with Greg from Sarissa ,” Smeaton says. “He understood the benefits of being involved with the testing prior to installation and provided key information to ensure we tailored the system to meet their specific needs.

“Testing the head system in the sail loft enabled us to be confident that everything would work seamlessly with the actual headcar and mainsail track on board when the sail was delivered and fitted to the yacht.”

A few days before the mast went back into the yacht, North Sails and the crew of Sarissa rolled the new mainsail into the boom at Rig Pro in Auckland. This was designed to reduce the time required on the dock. The approach worked and, combined with the testing in the loft, it saved time when it came to the sea trial.

How does she sail?

The results are impressive. The square-top is menacingly big. As soon as the head of the sail is engaged in the headboard car, the sail is eye-catching. Hoisting is easy. There’s a little more effort involved in the initial stage of the hoist, but once the head is engaged the rest of the hoist is no different from that required for the standard pinhead.

It’s important during the hoist to keep the boat pointing accurately into the wind in order to maintain the head of the sail between the running backstays and prevent contact. Managing the running backstays is also crucial, anticipating in advance the starting tack and finding the right balance of where to place the running backstays during the hoist. All basic stuff, but time can be saved if the runners are used efficiently and the boat driven accurately during the hoist.

As Sarissa is steered off the breeze, the windward backstay is run into position before the main loads up and the boat accelerates quickly away. In 22 knots of true wind she quickly picks up speed as the new 3Di headsail is unfurled and trimmed and the boat continues to accelerate. Bearing away on to a beam reach, we quickly settle into our groove, blasting along at a comfortable 16 knots.

The extra power generated from the additional sail area and the sail shape drive the boat forward impressively. The 3Di sails look good – flat and powerful. In the strong gusts, the direct-link steering loads up nicely, communicating the extra power directly through the wheel.

Not surprisingly, we find the main needs to be eased more than we’re used to in gusts. A little vang up helps to spill the extra breeze by opening up the head. The boat still feels very well balanced and remarkably more powerful. It’s quick, stable and finely tuned.

We were right to feel excited.

Murdoch's superyacht 'Sarissa' arrives

Dutch carbon-fibre performance sloop with cockpit swimming pool.

Lachlan and Sarah Murdoch’s stunning new carbon-fibre superyacht Sarissa has arrived in Sydney in time for summer. Designed by Bill Tripp and built by Dutch yard Vitters, the cutting-edge yacht was two years in the making and is the largest carbon-fibre sloop built to date in the Netherlands.

Vitters Shipyard's website describes  Sarissa as a spectacular 42.6 m carbon globetrotter and performance sloop with a fully modern hull shape, sail plan, and foils.

Hydraulic sailing and deck systems are said to provide improved reaction speed, load and stiffness to safely facilitate the sailing performance this modern and technical yacht was designed for.

Other custom technical features are an in-house developed hydraulic steering system with rudder feedback, as well as a unique system of back stays and running stays to operate both her cruising and racing sail configurations. The yacht has a lifting keel.

The mainsheet has been placed on an arch spanning the cockpit to keep the deck clear, while the aft cockpit can be transformed into a swimming pool for the kids.

Sarissa's design was guided by close client input and involvement, says Vitters, adding that the yacht will be used to sail all over the world with the family in tow and will take part in the established superyacht regattas.

The layout and deck plan emphasise a clean and modern look, while the family friendly layout below decks boasts a full-beam after stateroom, three guests cabins and three crew cabins.

The stunning interior is by Rhoades Young Design Ltd using a combination of limed oak, dark Italian walnut, Indian rosewood, carbon, dark leather and brushed stainless steel.

Finished in swordfish blue Alexseal paint, with a Ribling 555 tender in the 'garage', the 163 tonne Sarissa has a 56m carbon mast and will be hard to miss moored at Wooloomooloo in Sydney’s CBD.

Meantime, father Rupert reportedly listed his 184ft yacht Rosehearty , built by Perini Navi in Italy in 2006, for sale in September this year for $29.7 million. This followed his divorce from wife Wendi Deng.
