The Queen’s season kicks-off Sunday, May 12 with a Mother’s Day brunch cruise, offering a traditional brunch followed by a scenic tour of the Christina River out to the Delaware Memorial Bridge. The popular replica steamboat will continue to feature Sunday brunch tours, and introduce sightseeing tours of the city, as well as happy hour cruises throughout its season!

New! For its 2019 season, Thursday-Sunday sightseeing tours, allowing guests to take in the scenic views of the river without the full meal. Thursday evening cruises will also feature Happy Hour with a weekly rotation of drink specials and offers.

About the Vessel

Jungle Queen Riverboat holds up to 385 passengers on two levels, the upper and lower deck. A full bar is available servicing non-alcoholic and alcoholic beverages and snacks; there are lavatories onboard.

All cruises sail form the  Bahia Mar Yachting Center on A1A.

The cruise lasts approximately 90 minutes; the length of the tour may on occasion vary due to weather conditions, and/or traffic on waterways

Parking is available at the Bahia Mar Yachting Center at the same address as the Jungle Queen.

Parking will be $8.00 per vehicle and will need to pay for parking at Jungle Queen Box Office or on the Riverboat.

There is also public Ft Lauderdale metered parking.

Boarding starts approximately forty-five (45) minutes prior to departure.

The cruise returns to the Bahia Mar Yachting Center approximately 90 minutes after departure. 

Important Notices

To ensure you get on the cruise in time, it is recommended that you arrive at least 45-minutes prior to your cruise departure time to allow for traffic, parking, purchasing tickets or exchanging your vouchers for boarding passes and boarding. 

ONCE YOU PARK BE SURE TO PICK UP YOUR BOARDING PASSES AT THE BOX OFFICE WINDOW BEFORE GETTING IN LINE FOR BOAT!

There are no refunds once your ticket is purchased.  If your reservation is not cancelled or rescheduled at least 3 days in advance, then there will be no reschedules or credits for a future cruise. If you do not arrive at least 15 minutes prior to your cruise departure time, your seats will not be guaranteed, and there will be no refunds or credits, please arrive on time.

No weapons are permitted on the boat.

No food or beverages are permitted to be brought onto the boat.

Infants (under 2 years of age) must be in our passenger count. So, when you are making a reservation online, on the phone, or at our box office, please indicate if you have an infant accompanying you and how many.

Cruising the Moskva River: A short guide to boat trips in Russia’s capital

There’s hardly a better way to absorb Moscow’s atmosphere than on a ship sailing up and down the Moskva River. While complicated ticketing, loud music and chilling winds might dampen the anticipated fun, this checklist will help you to enjoy the scenic views and not fall into common tourist traps.

How to find the right boat?

There are plenty of boats and selecting the right one might be challenging. The size of the boat should be your main criteria.

Plenty of small boats cruise the Moskva River, and the most vivid one is this yellow Lay’s-branded boat. Everyone who has ever visited Moscow probably has seen it.

This option might leave a passenger disembarking partially deaf as the merciless Russian pop music blasts onboard. A free spirit, however, will find partying on such a vessel to be an unforgettable and authentic experience that’s almost a metaphor for life in modern Russia: too loud, and sometimes too welcoming. Tickets start at $13 (800 rubles) per person.

Bigger boats offer smoother sailing and tend to attract foreign visitors because of their distinct Soviet aura. Indeed, many of the older vessels must have seen better days. They are still afloat, however, and getting aboard is a unique ‘cultural’ experience. Sometimes the crew might offer lunch or dinner to passengers, but this option must be purchased with the ticket. Here is one such  option  offering dinner for $24 (1,490 rubles).

If you want to travel in style, consider Flotilla Radisson. These large, modern vessels are quite posh, with a cozy restaurant and an attentive crew at your service. Even though the selection of wines and food is modest, these vessels are still much better than other boats.

Surprisingly, the luxurious boats are priced rather modestly, and a single ticket goes for $17-$32 (1,100-2,000 rubles); also expect a reasonable restaurant bill on top.

How to buy tickets?

Women holding photos of ships promise huge discounts to “the young and beautiful,” and give personal invitations for river tours. They sound and look nice, but there’s a small catch: their ticket prices are usually more than those purchased online.

“We bought tickets from street hawkers for 900 rubles each, only to later discover that the other passengers bought their tickets twice as cheap!”  wrote  (in Russian) a disappointed Rostislav on a travel company website.

Nevertheless, buying from street hawkers has one considerable advantage: they personally escort you to the vessel so that you don’t waste time looking for the boat on your own.

Prices start at $13 (800 rubles) for one ride, and for an additional $6.5 (400 rubles) you can purchase an unlimited number of tours on the same boat on any given day.

Flotilla Radisson has official ticket offices at Gorky Park and Hotel Ukraine, but they’re often sold out.

Buying online is an option that might save some cash. Websites such as  this   offer considerable discounts for tickets sold online. On a busy Friday night an online purchase might be the only chance to get a ticket on a Flotilla Radisson boat.

This  website  (in Russian) offers multiple options for short river cruises in and around the city center, including offbeat options such as ‘disco cruises’ and ‘children cruises.’ This other  website  sells tickets online, but doesn’t have an English version. The interface is intuitive, however.

Buying tickets online has its bad points, however. The most common is confusing which pier you should go to and missing your river tour.

“I once bought tickets online to save with the discount that the website offered,” said Igor Shvarkin from Moscow. “The pier was initially marked as ‘Park Kultury,’ but when I arrived it wasn’t easy to find my boat because there were too many there. My guests had to walk a considerable distance before I finally found the vessel that accepted my tickets purchased online,” said the man.

There are two main boarding piers in the city center:  Hotel Ukraine  and  Park Kultury . Always take note of your particular berth when buying tickets online.

Where to sit onboard?

Even on a warm day, the headwind might be chilly for passengers on deck. Make sure you have warm clothes, or that the crew has blankets ready upon request.

The glass-encased hold makes the tour much more comfortable, but not at the expense of having an enjoyable experience.

Getting off the boat requires preparation as well. Ideally, you should be able to disembark on any pier along the way. In reality, passengers never know where the boat’s captain will make the next stop. Street hawkers often tell passengers in advance where they’ll be able to disembark. If you buy tickets online then you’ll have to research it yourself.

There’s a chance that the captain won’t make any stops at all and will take you back to where the tour began, which is the case with Flotilla Radisson. The safest option is to automatically expect that you’ll return to the pier where you started.

S T. PAUL, Minn. — The American Queen Voyages cruise company, which traveled the rivers, lakes and oceans of North America from Canada to Mexico, has ceased operation and canceled all scheduled cruises as its parent company, the Hornblower Group, files for bankruptcy.

Unless a buyer sets her back in sail, the company’s departure from the industry ends the decades-long run of the six-deck American Queen, believed to be the largest steam paddle-wheeler ever built on the Mississippi River.

“Despite great efforts by our team, crew and partners, American Queen Voyages (AQV) unfortunately has been unable to rebound from the effects of the pandemic,” reads a notice on the company’s website. “The overnight cruise industry was especially affected by changes in travel preferences and, as a result, AQV has become financially unsustainable.”

The cruise company had an on-again, off-again romance with Minnesota’s capital city, disappearing for four years before resuming visits in 2012 . The company last deboarded in St. Paul in 2019, according to St. Paul Parks and Recreation officials, though a longstanding employee said the final capital city voyage of the American Queen occurred on Oct. 4, 2015, according to his log.

After that, “they might have used a different boat,” said Mark Veum, a retired Roseville engineering officer who worked the American Queen’s engine room off and on from 2006 to 2022.

Even when the ship — christened in 1995 with capacity for 600 guests and crew — stopped in Red Wing instead of St. Paul, shuttle excursions brought passengers into the capital city. “There were tours all over the place,” Veum said.

Some cruise and travel industry publications called the company’s closure little surprise after years of reported turmoil, including service and payment issues.

The Signature Travel Network stopped selling tickets for the cruise line in March 2023, then resumed once commissions had been paid, according to Travel Weekly.

Other cruise companies have found Minnesota’s relatively chilly waters more inviting.

Viking River Cruises debuted Mississippi River trips from St. Paul to New Orleans in the fall of 2022 , and multiple cruise companies service Lake Superior and the rest of the Great Lakes. American Cruise Lines also sails the Mississippi River from New Orleans to Red Wing or St. Paul.

Marta Pereira da Costa, the queen of the Portuguese guitar, to perform in Fall River

FALL RIVER – A musical pioneer, Marta Pereira da Costa said she has found her voice in the Portuguese guitar.

The first woman to professionally play the Portuguese guitar in fado, the Lisbon native has been breaking down boundaries for female musicians and redefining the role of this distinctive musical instrument that arguably represents the Portuguese soul.

“I like to open my heart and be free,” revealed Costa. “I am very timid, but when I have the guitar in front of me and I play it, I lose my shyness and fears. The thing I love most is being on stage and performing.”

On April 5, she will bring her music to The Narrows in Fall River. The concert is part of an international tour that includes performances in Australia, China, and the United States.

“I’ve just realized that I’m going around the world,” she told O Jornal in a virtual interview conducted last week from Adelaile, Australia. “It’s going to be a great journey, where the Portuguese guitar is the star and queen. I’m extremely proud to be able to do this in the name of Portugal, the Portuguese people, and our history and culture. It’s really a dream come true… my goal is to take the Portuguese guitar as far as possible to the four corners of the world and get more people to know our instrument and music.”

Who will accompany Marta Pereira da Costa on her U.S. tour?

In the United States, she will be performing with guitarist João José Pita Junior, percussionist Pedro Segundo and fado singer Duarte.

“We have very good chemistry on stage, and I thought it would be interesting to bring a male voice and share the tour with him,” she said.

She will be presenting some songs from her self-titled debut album as well as songs she composed for her second album, which will be formally released in Portugal in May.

“The album is ready, and I’ve decided to bring it on this trip,” she said. “The idea is to start lifting the veil a little on what this second album is all about.”

What inspired her new album “Sem Palavras”?

Costa’s unique sound comes from a mix of styles, including traditional, world music and jazz.

In her new album, titled “Sem Palavras” (No Words), she collaborated with Cuban Pianist and Latin Grammy Winner Iván ‘Melon’ Lewis.

“It’s called ‘Sem Palavras’ because instrumental music really has no words,” she explained. “It’s a Portuguese guitar and piano project. There are only two instruments, so it’s a very intimate atmosphere. It’s a dialog between two instruments that I know very well.”

Working with Lewis was an “incredible experience” that allowed her to experiment with new sounds.

“Seeing him do magical things, with incredible taste and fantastic technique, made me very happy to be able to combine the guitar with another instrument that I also love,” she said. “It’s a very different approach from the first album. The other one had a quintet, strings, and repercussion. This album is more elegant and more intimate.”

She wrote four songs for the new album, including “Minha Alma,” and “Tempo Parado.”

“Sem Palavras” also features well-known piano tunes she adapted to the Portuguese guitar, such as António Pinho Vargas’ “Tom Waits,” George Gershwin’s “Summertime,” and Chick Corea’s “Spain.”

“I tried to give a Portuguese guitar approach to tunes that are known all over the world,” she said. “I thought it might be interesting to do this.”

How did Marta Pereira da Costa become the queen of the Portuguese guitar?

Surprisingly, Costa only started playing the Portuguese guitar at age 18.

Musically gifted, she began studying classical piano at age 4. Four years later, she was inspired to take up the classical guitar.

Upon her father’s suggestion, she began studying the Portuguese guitar through the hand of Carlos Gonçalves, one of the most influential players and accompanists of the legendary fado icon Amália Rodrigues. She immediately fell in love with it.

Though she started studying music at a very young age, she didn’t initially set out to pursue it as a professional career. She earned a Civil Engineering degree and even worked in that field for eight years before deciding to play professionally in 2012.

She recorded the Portuguese guitar for Rodrigo Costa Félix’s “Fados de Amor” (her ex-husband), released in May 2012. This was the first album in the history of fado where the Portuguese guitar was solely played by a woman.

In 2014, she was distinguished by Fundação Amália Rodrigues with the “Prémio Instrumentalista” (Instrumentalist Award) for her work.

In 2016, she released her debut album, featuring contributions with musicians like Richard Bona, Dulce Pontes, Camané, and Rui Veloso.

“I have a special connection to the piano, but I was never able to compose on it,” she confessed. “I have a love-hate relationship with the piano. I love it with a passion, but I feel incapable of doing certain things on it. I can only really express myself on the Portuguese guitar.”

But she has chosen to have a more delicate and sensitive approach to the Portuguese guitar.

“It’s a very physically demanding instrument,” she revealed. “I can’t compete with the resistance and strength that male players use.”

The technique employed to play the Portuguese guitar is known as dedilho, which comprises playing solely with the thumb and the index fingers. The strings are picked with the corner of the fingernails, avoiding contact of the flesh with the strings.

So instead of mastering the instrument by capitalizing on one’s strength and speed, her approach draws on her sensitivity and personal interpretation.

“The way I feel things is certainly different from a man… I always try to explore that sensitivity in my interpretations,” she said.

This will be her second time performing at The Narrows.

“To be back on the same stage five years later is very sweet,” she said. “I’m really looking forward to coming back to The Narrows. I think I’ve grown and learned a lot since then. I feel I am a more mature guitarist, more communicative, more confident. I’m curious to see how I’ll feel and what the connection will be with the audience.”

Performing Fado on the Tiny Desk Concert series

National Public Radio (NPR)’s YouTube channel, which has millions of subscribers, recently showcased Costa on its Tiny Desk Concert series .

Considered one of music’s premiere platforms, Tiny Desk has featured mega stars like Taylor Swift, Harry Styles, Tom Jones and Coldplay.

“It was an incredible experience,” Costa said. “It’s been a huge door to the world. Since the video was released in November of 2023, I've had many invitations to play all over the world. My life has changed since I went on that show. It was the boost I needed to get my music out there, and there have been so many opportunities. Later this year, I am going to perform in India.”

Her U.S. tour will begin on March 22 in San Jose, Calif. Before coming to Fall River, she will perform at the Gallo Center for the Arts in Modesto, Calif. (March 23); Freight and Salvage in Berkley, Calif. (March 27); Savannah Music Festival in Savannah, Ga. (March 29 and 30); and Joe’s Pub, New York City (April 4).

After The Narrows concert, she’ll return to Lisbon for the official launch of “Sem Palavras” at the Casa da Música in Porto.

“Performing feeds my soul, and I hope the audience feels that. I want the audience to leave my concerts with their hearts full,” she said.
