Chip & Kelly Giles thank you for visiting!

The Wild Hair is a 25' 1987 MacGregor 25.  It is the cruising-est, racing-est, bluewater sailing-est Mac 25 that ever prowled the Keys, sailed the seas and aimed to please.  From Destin to Key West to Bimini, this Mac 25 has proven that MacGregor 25's are the most versatile trailerable sailboats in the world.  We tow it eight hundred miles one way, live on it for weeks, and still can't get enough.  The Wild Hair is an example of what you can do with an "older" boat.  Carpe Diem.

HOT NEWS from Roger MacGregor :

AFTER BUILDING 40,000 MACGREGOR SAILBOATS, ITS RETIREMENT TIME.  (Sort of) .

It has dawned on the MacGregors that we are suddenly way beyond retirement age, beyond geezerhood, and it’s time to start a new career. We have recently ended production of the MacGregor sailboats at our Costa Mesa, California plant, and are continuing to develop our all new MacGregor 70. We have converted our 5 acre production site to 11 industrial rental units. We are now big time landlords.

EVERY YEAR, FOR THE PAST 40 YEARS , THE VARIOUS MODELS OF THE MACGREGOR 25 AND MACGREGOR 26 HAVE BEEN THE BEST SELLING SMALL CRUISING TYPE SAILBOATS, NOT ONLY IN THE UNITED STATES, BUT IN THE ENTIRE WORLD.   WE CAN THINK OF NO OTHER MANUFACTURER, OF ANY TYPE OF PRODUCT, THAT HAS SO TOTALLY DOMINATED ITS MARKET FOR SO LONG A PERIOD OF TIME .

Mac 25 on a lift

Does anyone keep a Mac 25 on a lift? I just bought my first sailboat this week, and I want to put it on a lift at my house over the winter. The current configuration of my lift is two 16 ft wood beams 2.75 in. wide and 9 in. tall, braced 40 in. apart on parallel I-beams. The (original) trailer for my Mac has 6 in. wide beams spaced 27 in. apart with a 19.5 in. clearance for the keel. I'm not as worried about the keel just yet, as I believe I should be able to position the boat over the I-beam before raising the lift. My bigger concern is whether or not the hull of the Mac will support its 2,000 lbs weight on only 2.75 in. wide un-canted beams, and whether or not I should move the beams closer together more like the beams of my trailer. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Thanks, Shaun

Why do you want to "lift" you Mac 25? I used to own a Mac 25, great boat. Unless you are doing some serious bottom work I wouldn't worry about "lifting" it. Even if you are, that seems a little overboard. You could just leave it supported on the trailer and lift the front and bcak at different times. That is what I did on my Montgomery 17 (1600 lbs displacement)

Sorry I should have clarified a bit more. This is a boat lift in my backyard. I don't plan to ever use the trailer.

MrBill_FLL

add a center brace between the two I beams for the keel. pic's of your lift? these types seem very popular around here: http://img.nauticexpo.com/images_ne/photo-g/boat-lift-185243.jpg

I can almost envision where this is, like on the canal near the William B. Tennison in Solomons, and the marine museum. Are there other folks who have boats similar to the Mac 25 near you and on lifts who you could consult? In any case, I think the advice you've already received seems really on target. My 25 is still at West Basin Marina, but we'll have it on the trailer next week and on the hard.

@arknoah - Nailed it. I'm one street south of there. @sumner - thanks for those details. I've got some time off over the holidays, and may try to reconfigure the lift.

@timebandit "Leaving the boat on he trailer with the cable holding the keel up will damage the bottom of boat." Why is that? When the boat is in the water, is it also a problem, or is the buoyancy of the keel such that it isn't an issue.

Length 25.0

I'm selling my 1982 Macgregor 25S sailboat as I just don't have enough time to sail it. It's a swing keel boat that drafts about 1.5 feet of water with the keel up but is nice and stable with the keel down. It has a 2008 Yamaha 4hp motor that starts easily and runs great. The main, jib, and genoa are in good shape. The halyards probably need replaced soon though. There is a v-berth in the front, a quarter berth on the port side and the dining table converts to a bunk as well. There is also a porta potty though I've never used it. It has a pop-top which allows a 6foot tall person to stand while inside the boat. All life jackets, anchor, lines, etc are included. The trailer is included in the boat although it is not a great fit. It's ok to move the boat a few times a year but I would modify the trailer to fit better if I was going to tow very far or very often. Local pickup only although I could deliver within a couple hour radius. .

Hitchcock, Texas

Model Sloop

Classic MacGregor 25 "Brown Sugar" This is a very clean and very good condition boat. She is currently being sailed in Galveston bay. She has a swing keel, a pop up roof 6' 7" height, and a brown canvas cover over companion way and matching jib and main sail cover and foreword hatch and bimini top Sails are in very good condition. Very clean closed head with porta potty. If you're looking for a pick up and go sail boat this is it. I have a Vip galvanized trailer with led lights she sits pretty on double axle that comes with her. The cushions could use a dry cleaning but are ok the way they are. There are probably things you could find to do with her as far as clean up and little projects here and there as with any boat but this is not a project it's ready to play with as is I sail her every weekend as she sits now and she is a great vessel. I'm just looking for larger now to sail across the ocean. Have a look at the pictures you will be impressed she is beautiful. If you have any questions about her please message me 6823334406 thanks I will separate boat from trailer if interested just call or text or message me on here and ask or make offer

2005 Macgregor 26

Stuart, Florida

2005 Macgregor 26 At Manatee Pocket Yacht Sales, we are proud to offer one of the only, if not the only, Macgregor Sailboats that is fully decked out for life aboard and fun. This boat is 100% ready to go! You can pick her up with a less then 5 month old trailer and head straight for the water. This boat comes with many extras and spare parts for cruising. She also has some very nice system upgrades that are factory installed and run by solar power. The Macgregor has the best of both worlds to offer, she is a sailboat that has been proven to sail in as much as 50 knots of wind or if there is no wind, you can pull the water ballast plug and motor at speeds up to 25 knots! At 25 knots, you just turned this beauty into another type of fun. At these speeds, you could even start pulling water toys behind the boat for a fun family day out. This truly is one of the coolest boats around. Another key feature with this boat is her draft. She can get to those far out places that have very little water, that few people can take their boat, for some rest and relaxing and outback camping. She can pull up right onto the banks on a sandy beach and you have your home right there next to the camp fire. You don't even have to set up a tent! This is a fantastic all around boat for someone who loves adventure or loves having friends over hanging out in her roomy cockpit and spending the day sailing around. Don't miss out on this deal! She won't be sticking around long! For a video of this boat copy and paste this link online. MacGregor 25 to Bahamas?

  • Add to quote

I am thinking about buying a Mac 25 - found some good used ones - and would dream of taking it 86 miles to Freeport, Grand Bahama one day. But a Mac 25 ain''t a heavy boat. 2100 displacement, 625 ballast. Would the boat be up to the job if I avoided foul weather?

I used to have a MacGregor 25. IMHO- it would be suicidal to take one off-shore... Because it''s so light, it snap rolls like a demon and doesn''t have enough mass to tack into a steep chop. (It will go into irons in a jiffy) In addition, the pop top and windows would cave in if you got hit by a breaking wave. You can try to shoot for good weather, but in the end better be ready to handle survival conditions if you go off-shore.

About 25 years ago, Bill Robinson, who wrote about 30 books on every aspect of sailing during his lifetime, told me that many people make the crossing to the Bahamas every year in boats like the pop-top Catalina 22 that I owned at the time. Several groups organize fleet cruises to the Bahamas for small boats every year, and, if you haven''t made the crossing before, that''s a good way to go. Log on to trailersailor.com and make inquiries on their discussion board. Someone there is likely to know who to contact to get in on such a crossing.

When I was there last time I saw a newer Mcgregor 25 (or 26)? It had a big outboard on it so I suppose it got there fast. Brad

Here''s a guy who''s done it twice, it''s been said that you could do it in a canoe with the right weather window. http://hcgiles.home.mindspring.com/

mac 25 to bahamas you all coment on the subject, mostly negativelly. just check your history! go to the website of one longtime sailor, richard konkolski who lived in a landlocked country czechoslovakia, nowdays czech republic, where he designed and built a wooden, 24 foot sailboat named "nike" and in early 1970's proceeded to cross the atlantic, then circumnavigated the globe in a boat 12 inches shorter than macgregor 25. since then he aquired tonns of world records and you are all wondering if you can cross 90 miles of warm waters of the florida straits...... I doubt Jeb much cares, as he was posting this back in 2005.

I hate getting sucked in when someone revives an old thread. Oh well.

Owner's Review of the MacGregor 26 Sailboat Models

There is some confusion about all of the different MacGregor 26 models and some controversy about their sailing abilities.

The MacGregor 26 evolved after the Venture 22 and the MacGregor 25, which had been built from 1973 to about 1987. The M25 had a weighted centerboard keel like other trailer able sailboats but featured positive flotation, a low price, easy trailer ability and a comfortable interior with an enclosed head (porta-potty). These features carried forward into M26 models and helped make MacGregor one of the bestselling sailboats.

Differences in MacGregor 26 Models

  • The MacGregor 26D (daggerboard), built from about 1986 to 1990, introduced water ballast to replace the weighted keel. When the water was drained for trailering, the boat weighed only 1650 lbs, making it even more attractive for towing with a regular automobile. The daggerboard, like a keel, helps prevent the boat from being blown sideways but could be lifted up for shoal water and trailering.
  • The MacGregor 26S , 1990 to 1995, replaced the daggerboard with a swing centerboard (which kicks up in an accidental grounding) and made other smaller changes. Together, the 26D and 26S are often called the "classic" MacGregor 26, and sometimes the 26C. Owners of these earlier models tend to refer to them as "the real sailboats" prior to the changes coming with the MacGregor 26X.
  • The MacGregor 26X , 1996 to 2004, marked a major change from the earlier "classic" M26 models by allowing a relatively huge outboard engine that essentially turned the 26X into a powerboat with a mast. Earlier models typically carried outboards as low as 5 or 6 HP (max. 10 HP), but the 26X now took up to 50 HP. For comparison, many thirty-six foot sailboats of this era, displacing more than five times the M's weight, had inboard engines of 25-30 HP. The water ballast could be drained of power, allowing the M26X to come up on a plane like a speedboat. The outboard well had to be moved to the centerline, with twin rudders to each side, and steering changed from tiller to a small powerboat-type steering wheel. The cabin height was increased for greater room inside and the boat is said to sail less well than the earlier 26.
  • The MacGregor 26M (motorsailor), 2005 to present, continued the 26X's trend, now allowing up to a 60 HP outboard. The swing centerboard was replaced with a daggerboard to free up more space below and the second tier of windows was added with standing headroom. The boat is advertised to motor at 24 MPH. In addition to the water ballast, there are 300 lbs of permanent ballast, likely needed for stability with so much windage and the high weight of the engine. At 2550 lbs dry (excluding engine), it now needs stronger vehicle and tow package.

Risks and Precautions

Many traditional sailors joke about MacGregors because of the light fiberglass construction (the hull can "oilcan" flex in places if you push hard against it) and its powerboat characteristics since 1996. Many say it is not a "real sailboat." Most misunderstood, however, is the water ballast that has been a hallmark of all twenty-six models.

The water ballast tank is horizontal and only a foot or so beneath the surface, unlike a vertical ballasted keel or centerboard that extends much deeper. Some have even questioned how water, weighing the same as the water displaced by the boat, can be called ballast at all. The ballast tank has been well engineered, however, and does provide righting moment the same as a keel when the boat heels over, because the weight of water far out from the centerline on the "uphill" side (in the air once heeled over) does pull the boat back down the same as a weighted keel.

This does mean that the boat is more tender, or tippy, initially. A story has been told about a sailor on one edge of the deck who grabbed the mast when the boat heeled, and his own weight pulling on the mast that far above the waterline caused the boat to capsize all the way over. Whether true or not, the story illustrates a common perception of how tender the MacGregor is.

It is true that an M26 with 10 people aboard capsized with two fatalities -- most likely due to uneven distribution of the human weight on the boat.

Safely Sail the Water-Ballast

In normal conditions, however, careful sailors can safely sail the water-ballast M26 by following standard precautions:

  • Reef sails when the wind is blowing.
  • Maintain good balance with crew weight balanced against heeling.
  • Prevent accidental gybes.
  • Keep the ballast tank full and well-sealed.
  • Maintain steerage control at all times.
  • Heave to or take other storm action in high wind or waves.
  • Don't drink and sail.

The larger safety issue is that for many owners, the M26 is a "starter boat" and they may not have the experience or knowledge to avoid possible problems in time. The bottom line is that anyone who goes sailing needs to be fully aware of the limitations of their boat and practice all safety guidelines.

Experience With the MacGregor 26S

Having owned and sailed a 26S extensively for three years, it indeed sails fairly well and lives up to its reputation of being a roomy and easily trailered pocket cruiser. This sailboat can meet most budgetary needs and has room enough for a family of three to cruise for up to a week at a time.

It is a light boat, but with sailing experience and caution, trouble in winds to thirty knots can be easily avoided. The fiberglass is thin but you can avoid running into rocks. Thousands of MacGregor owners have had experiences where they thoroughly enjoyed sailing.

Keep in mind that it's a light boat and always take the precautions listed above. For powerboat owners of the 26X and 26M, the boat should be as safe as any powerboat but do not hit a rock or another boat at 24 MPH.

Most Common Problems With Macgregor 25 Sailboat

The MacGregor 25 is a small pleasure keelboat that is designed by Roger MacGregor. MacGregor Yacht Corporation in the United States initiated building the Macgregor 25 sailboats. The production of this sailboat was a boom in the years from 1973 to 1987. At the early production stage, the Macgregor 25 was sold under the name of Venture 25 .

During the 14 years of production, more than 7,000 units have been sold. Sadly, the company is out of production now. This is why the tendency to buy the boat has increased among the people as the boat will not only offer extraordinary performance but also act as a symbol of a wonderful historical monument.

However, there are some problems that are worth noticing before buying this sailboat. These topics will be presented in detail in today’s article.

7 Most Common Problems with Macgregor 25 Sailboat:

There is no doubt that the Macgregor 25 is a remarkable sailboat. But there is no such thing on earth without problems. That goes the same for the Macgregor 25.

1. Not Good with Any Outboard Engine

Out of curiosity, people end up buying Macgregor 25 sailboats. Until they eventually realize that these boats are not compatible with any type of outboard engines. Even if they work, you may not get the full potential. There will always be issues.

While reading a forum, we have found that a man had bought a 6.6 hp Mercury outboard engine for his Macgregor 25. He had trouble operating it with the boat. First of all, the engine works when we put it in reverse mode, which is pretty awkward. Second, he could actually make it work after several tries. The engine kicked hard and jumped out of the water instead of locking in place. Now, this is also dangerous.

Now please, don’t be a guy like him as you don’t want to spend tons of money buying a new engine after such occurrences. Also, he had faced irregular throttles. He had little control over speeding up and slowing down the boat. Even if he shifted into neutral, the boat seemed to speed up.

Reading this post on a forum and after hearing some frustrating stories, we are determined that only limited outboard engines work with the Macgregor 25 sailboat.

2. Issue With Locking The Keel

Yes, locking the keel of the Macgregor 25 can be a challenge sometimes. Reading the same post on a forum we have found out the man had trouble locking the keel. He said he could locate the locking hole when he was at the dock. Other than that, he could only expect to find the locking hole while powering up as the unlocked keel swung backward then.

The man also mentioned that he had a narrow berth. That increased the chances of hitting the bottom. As a result, this has increased the risk of docking the boat; especially when locking the keel is an issue.

People say this issue can be solved by purchasing a jam cleat (i.e. Nautos CL257 ). However, that will cost you extra bucks and many wouldn’t like that. So keep this problem in mind before buying a Macgregor 25, especially when you have a narrow berth.

3. Dynamic Build Quality

We have already said that the Macgregor 25 is out of production. You may buy one from a third-party source, but you can never be sure of the build quality. Why? Because you are not getting the boat directly from the manufacturer. A few boats were built with a masthead sloop rig back in 1980 and they were named after “Macgregor 25”.So, it’s been a long time.

When you are not buying a product directly from the manufacturer, it is common to see some differences or changes in the build quality. And it will depend on the previous owner when you are buying a reconditioned Macgregor 25. You may never know if the original part is being replaced or changed with a poor-quality one.

As a result, people looking to buy a used Macgregor 25 should do some research before buying a Macgregor 25. They should also find a reliable source for buying such a boat. A source on which the buyer can fully entrust. Here is the specification of the Macgregor 25.

mac 25 sailboat

4 . These Boats Might be Overpriced

Although the Macgregor 25 aren’t the most expensive boats when you are looking for a boat of the same class, they are certainly not the cheapest either. C’mon, we are not talking about a million-dollar yacht here, right?

Depending on the condition of the boat and retailer, the price of a Macgregor 25 (aka Venture 25) can start from $7,900 and can go up to $169,500 (source – Boat Trader). In comparison with an inshore boat , the minimum price is somewhere around $27,000.

For instance, when you can purchase an inshore boat of moderate size for less than $20,000; the same size Crestliner (an offshore boat) will not cost less than $30,000. The most interesting fact is, both boats have similar layouts and they both feature Mercury engines.

In our opinion, the Macgregor 25 boats can be found at affordable prices despite their reputation and history. We have to admit, these boats can cost less than an aluminum or fiberglass boat. Aluminum and fiberglass boats come with Yamaha motors and they are well furnished.

5. There Are Reviews of Being Rough

Another problem with the Macgregor 25 boat is being rough. At least, that is not what we say, we have discovered it from people’s reviews. After reading the boat owners’ detailed and informative reviews, we are convinced that the Macgregor 25 can be rough sometimes while going offshore.

Owners stated that the boat is hard to speed up and slow down. They would have experienced a smoother offshore with other boats of similar sizes. But that doesn’t completely indicate the Macgregor 25 is always rough. People have different opinions. While some people say they have rough offshore experience with the Macgregor 25, others say it is quite smooth. We guess, it actually depends on the perspectives of people.

To get rid of this confusion, it is better to ask or request the dealer or owner of the boat for a test drive before finally making a commitment for buying the boat.

6. No Longer in Production

Perhaps, this can be a major disadvantage and advantage at the same time. But how is that possible? In case you don’t know, the Macgregor 25 was announced a hall of fame in the early 2000 and the American Sailboat declared –

“Fostering new enjoyment and growth in the sport of sailing through excellent design”

Well, if you are a collector, looking for adding some great and historical boats to your collection; the Macgregor 25 can be a worthy option. The production of Macgregor 25 has stopped. This means, only a few owners can enjoy riding this boat. So, they are like a hall of fame for the collectors.

On the contrary, finding original parts or services from the manufacturer is no longer possible due to being out of production. This can be a serious issue when you are a general boat owner. Because you can neither expect servicing directly from the manufacturer nor can you find original parts easily. The only option can be importing parts after hardly getting a source.

7. Customer Service is Not Available

Like we have discussed earlier, a boat that is out of production means – no support to the customers. You will either have to help yourself or get help from an expert. Therefore, this is a very important issue people should take into account before buying a boat that is no longer made.

We have come up with a way to get around with this issue. That would be buying a Macgregor 25 from a private dealer. When you buy a boat from an authorized dealer, you are likely to expect personal customer service from them. It’s the same as buying a car from a dealer. On top of that, they offer their own warranty and guarantee policies that should make you relax for a bit.

But don’t buy a Macgregor 25 boat from a transient company or dealer that may go under after serving for a year or two. Then, you will have to rely on the manufacturer’s support, which is no longer acceptable. So, be very careful of this drawback.

General Pros and Cons of the Macgregor 25 Sailboat :

Despite the above problems, the Macgregor 25 boats have some general pros and cons. Taking a look at them will help you to decide whether you are really going to buy one or not.

  • The Macgregor 25 has a long and flat underbody to deliver enough sailing speed.
  • The boat was declared a Hall of Fame in 2000 by the American Sailboat.
  • Even after so many years, they are still competing with modern boats.
  • The Macgregor 25 is also a great looking boat that is worth collecting.
  • You can easily find one at a medium price range.
  • Although these are out of production, support and maintenance can be found from private dealers. Not to mention a large fan community.
  • Even if you can’t get the exact part, there are compatible parts available for this boat. These parts are great to make the boat up and running.
  • A major problem is limited engine options.
  • Dynamicity in the build quality from time to time.
  • The manufacturer’s customer support is discrete.
  • Hard to find particular parts as the company is no longer in production.
  • Some complained of having rough offshore experiences.
  • Sometimes, the dealer or owner can ask for prices that are illogical.

Don’t underestimate the MacGregor 25 sailboat just because it isn’t in the production line anymore. During its prestigious 14 years of production, only 7,000 units have been made. Therefore, these boats are no joke and can be considered as limited editions. Moreover, the American Sailboat has put this boat under the hall of fame section, suggesting these boats have excellent designs for sport sailing. All these make the MacGregor 25 a jewel to collect.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.
