Hawk 20 is a 20 ′ 0 ″ / 6.1 m monohull sailboat designed by Chris Hawkins and built by Reid Marine starting in 1992.
Rig and Sails
Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.
The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.
Classic hull speed formula:
Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL
Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL
Sail Area / Displacement Ratio
A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.
SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3
- SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
- D : Displacement in pounds.
Ballast / Displacement Ratio
A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.
Ballast / Displacement * 100
Displacement / Length Ratio
A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.
D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³
- D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
- LWL: Waterline length in feet
Comfort Ratio
This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.
Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )
- D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
- LOA: Length overall in feet
- Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet
Capsize Screening Formula
This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.
CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

Hawk 20-any experiences?

Firstly, sorry if I keep posting questions, but this seems like a lovely, fast boat and I was wondering if anyone has had a sail on one of these. What are they like? Seawothiness? I am only looking really at the two-berth version with a cabin. Regards

There's one in our club. I've never sailed on it but I've sailed against it and can confirm that it's fast! Looks well designed and strongly built too.
No-one else seems to be offering opinions. I have not sailed one either. There are quite a few on Windermere and they appear to sail well and handle gusty, windy conditions well. I've fancied one as a day boat, and the open version would suit that purpose well. The Cabin (cuddy?) version would offer more protection but for anything more than a brief overnight I wouild imagine there are more suitable 20 foot boats.
Hawk 20 We have a active Hawk 20 fleet at Christchurch SC, and they offer competitive one design racing. It's some years since I crewed on one but found them remarkably solid and easy to sail. I am a bit less convinced about the merits of the cabin version, it must be very cramped below, and for the money you could buy a proper cruiser second hand. If you're looking for the option to stay overnight on it very occasionally maybe, but I think the pure open version does what it is designed for very well and isn't trying to be something it isn't.
Like a lot of others never sailed on one but sailing out of Christchurch I see plenty. Weather never seems to stop them and they look great fun.

Hawk 20 Loads of info here http://www.hawk20.co.uk/design-features.htm

I have sailed a cabin version of the Hawk 20 for the past 2 years. I try to sleep aboard one or two nights a week from March to November, weather permitting. I think I have done about 30 nights this year. My background is dinghy sailing and camping - compared to that the cabin is very comfortable. If you are used to more spacious accommodation, you might find it a bit cramped. I generally go alone but if I have a crew, I put up the tent over the cockpit and that gives loads of extra space. I sail in the Solent and never use marinas. When I am cruising, I either dry out or anchor off and use the inflatable canoe. I keep the boat on a trailer at Calshot and launch it each time. In sailing terms, the Hawk is hard to beat - fast, self righting, self-draining, floats in a foot of water, tacks like a dinghy. I really rate it but, to be honest, when I was looking to buy, I never found (and therefore never tried) any direct competitor of the Hawk.

Looking for maintenance parts for hawk 20? Anyone know anywhere that sells parts? In particular look for a gudgeon. The attachment from the rudder to the pin on the hull. Any advice would be appreciated

The Hawk 20 yacht is a 20ft self-righting, self-draining, shallow-draft, centre-board, sea-going day boat built in GRP. The boat is ideal for the day boat racing and cruising enthusiast, the family sailer who wants comfort and security for the family without losing the exhilaration of fast windward sailing, club day boat fleets for closely matched one-design racing and sailing schools. it is also highly suitable for holiday chartering organisations wishing to offer exciting sailing to experienced sailers and total security and ease of handling for the not so experienced or beginners.
The motor in the Hawk 20 is mounted in an inboard well directly in front of the rudder and, being well forward of the transom, there is little chance of cavitation. The boat is available in two versions, a day boat and cabin version.
The Hawk 20 yacht comes complete with a tilt-back road trailer with pivot and a multi-roller system with nylon bearings to take the drama and back- ache out of launching and recovery which can be done in minutes wearing ordinary sailing shoes instead of waders or boots, single-handed if necessary, with the trailer brakes and wheel bearings clear of the water.

Broker's Comments
These boat details are subject to contract. Note: Offers on the asking price may be considered. I had seen this Hawk sailing in the bay and often fancied taking a closer look. An interesting package, a super size dinghy in appearance, but with the stability of a keel boat. Lots of space, simple rig and all on a trailer. Build quality appears to be very good and although this one is a few years old and could do with a polish she appears to be in excellent condition. The current Owner is retiring from sailing. "I just want to sail her myself" .

Hawk 20 is a fast, modern day boat which sails like a dream: she was clocked planing at 12 knots during the Practical Boat Owner test March 1993. Single handed or with crew she tacks like a Laser, gybes with no fuss, and carries a kite without a tremor. She will sail fully-rigged in Force 6 and feels safer than many a cruiser.
