“Members only! But!” Review of Green Pond Yacht Club

green pond yacht club membership fees

Got a gift certificate to use here and had a fabulous meal. Oyster Rockefeller tasty variation. Scallop dish superb and swordfish done perfectly. My friend had the Portuguese stew and was talking about it for days after. Shelly the pastry chef and server was professional attentive and made some great deserts. She also handled our reservations as we were not members.

This is a small local club that offer some of the best meals in Falmouth. It has a very comfortable personality, offers a nice view and is compliment with great service. As a private club, you can almost always get a reservation during the summer. They offer dining on the deck overlooking the water when it warms up. In season they offer lunch as well. A town dock across the street provides transient dockage to those who want to arrive by boat. The best part is the dues to join are probably the lowest in the area. Social activities are offered as well. This truly a hidden gem!

A new view: Green Pond Yacht Club will soon open its doors

The Green Pond Yacht Club

The 2011 summer season will mark a new era for Green Pond Marina with the opening of the Green Pond Yacht Club.

On Saturday, May 14, the club hosted an open house for members, potential members and the community at large. An opening date has not been set but the club is slated to be open by summer.

General Manager Kristin Boon said the club will benefit the entire community, by operating year-round.

“We hope to have a nice mix of summer and year-round residents,” she said. “We see this as a place where people can also hold Christmas parties and off-season gatherings.”

Located on the corner of Menauhant and Acapesket Road, the club is the former home of owner and commodore Harry Turner, and has been renovated to include a bar and dining area for members. There is also an enclosed deck overlooking Green Pond.

Boon added that the majority of members live nearby.

“Half the neighborhood has already signed up. They’re excited to have a place they can walk to and see their neighbors and socialize,” she said.

Turner now lives two houses over from the club, and said he is committed to maintaining a quiet, family-oriented club. In January, when Turner sought a liquor and victualler license from the Board of Selectmen, he chose not to seek an entertainment license out of concern for his neighbors.

“We decided to make it a private club because it’s easier to control membership that way,” Turner said.

Turner has also offered the use of six new Optimist sailboats to the Falmouth High School sailing team free of charge. Previously, the team rented boats from Falmouth Yacht Club.

“They’ve been using the boats since their season started May 9,” he said. “They’re a really nice bunch of kids and their instructor Kristina Woods is wonderful. They’re great to have around.”

The club also features an education center, which will provide sailing and power boating classes. The center is named for Bill and Suzie Bauknecht, former longtime owners of the house and Green Pond Seafood.

Turner and his friend, K.C. Clarkson of the Falmouth Police Department, decided the club would be the perfect addition to the marina. Clarkson, who owns Kentri Developments, was the general contractor for the project and also serves as vice commodore.

The club features many recycled materials, such as flooring from the Worcester Shoe Factory and oak boards from the USS Constitution. The double teak border around the bar is from the Harvard Library.

“Our goal is for this to be a nice place where a family can come and enjoy a great meal and the beautiful view,” Turner said. “The focus is on family and boating.”

What are the Cheapest Yacht Clubs?

The cheapest yacht clubs charge just under $1,000 per year for membership. While this does give you access to different types of experiences, you may be disappointed by the overall amenities.

Some yacht clubs are known for their extravagant country club styles that help you to embrace a particular lifestyle. They include Olympic-sized swimming pools, state-of-the-art tennis courts, and fine dining.

Everything has a beautiful waterfront view. It can feel like you are in the middle of an idyllic paradise without ever even having to leave the shore. If this is what you can gain from the most expensive yacht clubs, you should set your expectations much lower for the cheaper yacht clubs.

The cheaper yacht clubs lack the community aspect of these exclusive options. They feature dry slips and the occasional party, but not much more.

Some of them may have the feel of a county park with some picnic benches, outdoor grills, and a moderately sized swimming pool. Expect a much more casual atmosphere when you choose to go with a cheaper yacht club.

It is even possible that they are simply “paper yacht clubs” that do not even maintain a physical building of their own.

How Much Do the Most Expensive Yacht Clubs Cost to Join?

The most expensive yacht clubs can vary a great deal in price. Most of them will cost between $3,000 and $4,000 per year. However, you can certainly find more exclusive clubs that will cost above and beyond this.

Keep in mind that these more expensive clubs generally are not open to the public. They are offered by invitation only and you must have a member sponsor you to be considered for entrance.

When you are paying for a more expensive yacht club, you should make sure that you are really going to get your money’s worth. These expensive clubs promote a certain type of elegant lifestyle.

Make sure that you are planning to take advantage of all the amenities available from one of these clubs before you sink too much money into the membership fees. The social aspect of these expensive yacht clubs is extremely important.

If you plan to simply rent a boat from time to time, you might be able to go with a cheaper yacht club.

What Is Generally Included in the Membership Fee for Yacht Clubs?

Have you been wondering why you should join a yacht club? Many potential members want to know what they can expect from their membership fees before they commit to a year-long contract. There are many advantages to signing up for a membership with a well-known yacht club.

Amenities and Activities

First and foremost, you get access to activities and cruises planned by board members. These might be various sailing activities, dinners, get-togethers, tennis matches, or other events that take up a lazy Sunday afternoon.

You also gain access to any amenities that surround the yacht club’s marina. For many programs, this means a fitness center, pool, and tennis courts. Several locations also offer fine dining, meeting rooms, and more.

It is like a private oasis where you can get away from the hustle and bustle of the regular world. Time moves slowly when you’re enjoying the amenities here.

Many yacht clubs have programs that introduce children (and adults!) to sailing. Take classes to learn more about improving your technique, sailing safety, and other important aspects of life on the open water.

Access to the Fleet

The main reason why most people join yacht clubs is to be able to rent out boats instead of purchasing their own. Joining a yacht club may give you access to an entire fleet of yachts that can be reserved for a day or weeks at a time. Some yacht clubs allow you to rent boats for up to ten days at a time.

Others do not allow you to rent out ships. They are primarily geared toward individuals who already own a yacht or will own a yacht in the future. Make sure you know the difference in advance.

green pond yacht club membership fees

Are There any Additional Costs Besides the Membership Fees?

Unfortunately, the membership fees are not the only cost associated with joining a yacht club. Most of the clubs in the United States also have a one-time initial fee that tends to cost thousands of dollars. Many will range from $1,500 to $5,000 depending on the location and the exclusivity of the yacht club.

This one-time fee should be the only additional money you pay except for fuel. Most yacht clubs do not cover the cost of the fuel used in the ship during your rental if renting is an option. Be prepared for what this could cost you.

If you cause damage to the ship, you can also expect some out-of-pocket costs. Insurance should cover the damage, but you will likely be asked to cover the cost of the deductible.

Be sure to inquire about how much you may be on the hook for before you sign up for any particular yacht club. Accidents can happen, even to the most experienced sailors. Make sure that you can afford the mishap in advance.

Is a Yacht Club Membership Right for You?

Understanding what the real cost of a yacht club membership is can be the first step toward determining if this is right for you. Many people love the luxuries available through the more expensive yacht clubs, but they may not be able to afford it. Consider what is most important in a club to you before deciding to sign on the dotted line for an annual membership.

Yacht club chef shares recipe for spicy lobster pasta for one

Lobster Fra Diavlo calls for lobster meat added near the end to preserve its texture and flavor. [JASON KOLNOS/CAPE COD TIMES]

If the Lobster Fra Diavolo that appeared on the Oct. 24 episode of “Life With Gwenn” looked appealing, you have two choices.

Join up to eat at the Green Pond Yacht Club in East Falmouth or simply make it at home with this recipe shared by the yacht club’s executive chef Steve Harris.

On the Cape Cod Times Facebook Live show (see it at www.capecodtimes.com/lifewithgwenn), Harris shares tips for National Pasta Day (Oct. 25), such as using the pasta cooking water to thicken your red sauce.

He also talks about how you don’t have to own a yacht to join the year-round club where he works.

“It’s like $45 a month and you get to use the facilities, host dinner parties or cooking classes without paying a room rental or just go out to dinner with your friends without waiting in long lines during the busy summer season,” he says.

Green Pond is one of at least a dozen private yacht clubs on Cape Co, each with its own rules and membership fees. Many members to not own boats. Some clubs have vessels available to rent and most have restaurants.

Harris says the basic membership is $500 a year at Green Pond Yacht Club.

“I think a lot of people think of a yacht club as being out of reach financially, but it may be more affordable than people think,” says Harris, adding that he couldn’t afford a yacht.

Chef Harris says this spicy pasta, one of several on the club’s menu, is made to order so the following recipe serves one.

Lobster Fra Diavolo

1 tablespoon extra virgin olive oil

3 peeled garlic cloves, chopped

1 small shallot, chopped

1 pinch red pepper flakes

1 pinch black pepper

½ cup vegetable or chicken stock

½ cup white wine

1 cup tomato sauce

Parmesan Reggiano cheese, to taste

1 head broccoli chopped into medium-sized florets, and steamed for four minutes, then cooled

3 leaves fresh basil, julienne-cut (long strips)

1 one-pound lobster cooked and removed from shell (Steam or boil for 8 minutes, cool and remove all meat)

½ cup pappardelle pasta (or other long noodle), cooked

In hot skillet over medium heat, add olive oil, garlic and shallot. Brown for 2 minutes.

Add white wine, reduce by half, by stirring while pan is over heat.

Add red pepper, black pepper and stock, and reduce by half.

Add broccoli, lower heat to simmer for 2 minutes.

Add tomato sauce and lobster, and simmer 3 minutes. Do not overcook.

Add pasta and toss for 1 minute.

Plate and top with basil and Parmesan.
