Trac-16 is a 16 ′ 4 ″ / 5 m catamaran sailboat designed by Steve Nichols and built by AMF Corp. and Alcort starting in 1983.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.
Classic hull speed formula:
Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL
Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL
Sail Area / Displacement Ratio
A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.
SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3
- SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
- D : Displacement in pounds.
Ballast / Displacement Ratio
A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.
Ballast / Displacement * 100
Displacement / Length Ratio
A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.
D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³
- D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
- LWL: Waterline length in feet
Comfort Ratio
This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.
Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )
- D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
- LOA: Length overall in feet
- Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet
Capsize Screening Formula
This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

AMF Trac 14 and 16 catamarans

I currently own a trac 14 and wondered how many more are out there. Any tips or advice on it? We have only had it in the water once this past summer but plan on many trips next summer. Looks to be a quality built boat and I like how it can be disassembled for storage.

We love all the suggestions and tips! We have friends who offered to show us the ropes, since reading the manual and watching YouTube isn’t the same thing as being on the lake. Here’s the manual I found from a beach cats forum . Curious if y’all recommend any YouTube tutorials on how to rig this thing? We had adult sailing lessons but with a young family (busy with kids), we haven’t been on the water in a while. We appreciate the tips!!

Hello! I'm hoping there are still some AMF users out there. Just bought an older AMF Trac 16 and Dying to get it on the water. Looks like the trampoline is in decent condition but Im finding a few issues. One, the mast won't go vertical when I'm rigging it and have stays attached even at furthest points on stay extenders. The Forestay has about a three foot gap. I'm concerned my stays are wrong. Does anyone have the specs on the stays? How long they should be? Could I fix this with longer stay extenders? Also missing the pins for the rudders. Does anyone have the specs on them? Going to try to find something that works in the mean time.

The Trac 16 (sometimes styled as the TRAC-16 or Trac-16) is an American catamaran sailboat that was designed by Steve Nichols as a day sailer and first built in 1983.
The trac catamarans were built by AMF (they used to build sunfish and lasers too). The performance of most of the common 16 ft boardless cats (trac 16, prindle 16, hobie 16, nacra 5.0, G-cat 5.0) is going to be pretty similar. I would get whatever boat you find that is in the best condition. The owner's manual for the trac16:

16 Catamaran sailboat, fast and fun, includes a galvanized trailer with highway wheels. This boat was designed and built by the folks who built the Sunfish and other sailboats. It is a well-built boat, it is just too big for me now that my sons are have moved out. We have had a lot of fun with this great boat.

I would remove the old plug base and use those yak plugs you have in the package. Those are the same plugs I put on the trac 14.
